Abstract Objective This cross‐sectional study aimed to determine the epidemiology of olfactory and gustatory dysfunctions related to COVID‐19 in China. Methods This study was conducted by 45 tertiary Grade‐A hospitals in China. Online and offline questionnaire data were obtained from patients infected with COVID‐19 between December 28, 2022, and February 21, 2023. The collected information included basic demographics, medical history, smoking and drinking history, vaccination history, changes in olfactory and gustatory functions before and after infection, and other postinfection symptoms, as well as the duration and improvement status of olfactory and gustatory disorders. Results Complete questionnaires were obtained from 35,566 subjects. The overall incidence of olfactory and taste dysfunction was 67.75%. Being female or being a cigarette smoker increased the likelihood of developing olfactory and taste dysfunction. Having received four doses of the vaccine or having good oral health or being a alcohol drinker decreased the risk of such dysfunction. Before infection, the average olfactory and taste VAS scores were 8.41 and 8.51, respectively; after infection, they decreased to 3.69 and 4.29 and recovered to 5.83 and 6.55 by the time of the survey. The median duration of dysosmia and dysgeusia was 15 and 12 days, respectively, with 0.5% of patients having symptoms lasting for more than 28 days. The overall self‐reported improvement rate was 59.16%. Recovery was higher in males, never smokers, those who received two or three vaccine doses, and those that had never experienced dental health issues, or chronic accompanying symptoms. Conclusions The incidence of dysosmia and dysgeusia following infection with the SARS‐CoV‐2 virus is high in China. Incidence and prognosis are influenced by several factors, including sex, SARS‐CoV‐2 vaccination, history of head‐facial trauma, nasal and oral health status, smoking and drinking history, and the persistence of accompanying symptoms.

Objective In the treatment of lumbar degenerative spondylolisthesis (LDS) with Posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF) surgery, interbody fusion implants play a key role in supporting the vertebral body and facilitating fusion. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of implantation depth on sagittal parameters and functional outcomes in patients undergoing PLIF surgery. Methods This study reviewed 128 patients with L4‐L5 LDS between January 2016 and August 2019. All patients underwent an open PLIF surgery that included intravertebral decompression, implantation of pedicle screws and cage. We grouped according to the position of the center of the cage relative to the L5 vertebral endplate. Patients with the center of the cage located at the anterior 1/2 of the upper end plate of the L5 vertebral body were divided into Anterior group, and located at the posterior 1/2 of the upper end plate of the L5 vertebral body were divided into Posterior group. The lumbar lordosis (LL), segmental lordosis (SL), sacral slope (SS), pelvic incidence (PI), pelvic tilt (PT) and slope degree (SD) was measured for radiographic outcomes. We used the visual analog scale (VAS) and the oswestry disability index (ODI) score to assess functional outcomes. Paired t‐test was used to compare imaging and bedside data before and after surgery between the two groups, and independent sample t‐test, χ2 test and Fisher exact test were used to compare the data between the two groups. Result The mean follow‐up of Anterior group was 44.13 ± 9.23 months, and Posterior group was 45.62 ± 10.29 months (P > 0.05). Abstract Low efficiency and spectral instability caused by the surface defects have been considerable issues for the mixed‐halogen blue emitting perovskite quantum dots light‐emitting diodes (PeQLEDs). Here, an in situ surface passivation to perovskite quantum dots (PeQDs) is realized by introducing the metal cations competitive lattice occupancy assisted with acid‐etching, in which the long‐chain, insulating and weakly bond surface ligands are removed by addition of octanoic acid (OTAC). Meanwhile, the dissolved A‐site cations (Na+) compete with the protonated oleyl amine and are subsequently anchored to the surface vacancies. The preadded lead bromide, acting as inorganic ligands, demonstrates strong bonding to the uncoordinated surface ions. The as‐synthesized PeQDs show the boosted photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and superior stability with longer lifetime. As a result, the PeQLEDs (470 nm) based on the OTAC‐Na PeQDs exhibit an external quantum efficiency of 8.42% in the mixed halogen PeQDs (CsPb(BrxCl1−x)3). Moreover, the device exhibits superior spectra stability with negligible shift. Our competition mechanism in combination with in situ passivation strategy paves a new way for improving the performance of blue PeQLEDs.

Abstract Activation of receptor‐interacting protein kinase 1 (RIPK1), a broadly expressed serine/threonine protein kinase, by pro‐inflammatory cytokines and pathogens can result in apoptosis, necroptosis, or inflammation. RIPK1 inhibition has been shown to reduce inflammation and cell damage in preclinical studies and may have therapeutic potential for degenerative and inflammatory diseases. SIR2446 is a potent and selective novel small molecule RIPK1 kinase inhibitor. This phase I, randomized, double‐blind, placebo‐controlled study in Australia (ACTRN12621001621808) evaluated the safety (primary objective), pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics of single (3–600 mg) and multiple (5–400 mg for 10 days) ascending oral doses of SIR2446M (SIR2446 magnesium salt form) in healthy adults from Nov 24, 2021, until May 01, 2023. All treatment‐emergent adverse events (TEAEs) were mild/moderate. The most reported TEAEs were vascular access site pain, headache, and rash morbilliform. SIR2446M plasma half‐lives ranged from 11 to 19 h and there were no major deviations from dose proportionality for maximum concentration and area under the curve across doses. Renal excretion of unchanged SIR2446 was minimal. No marked accumulation was observed (mean accumulation ratio, 1.2–1.6) after multiple daily doses. A high‐fat meal mildly reduced the exposure but was not considered clinically significant. SIR2446M had a rapid and sustained inhibitory effect on the activity of RIPK1, with an overall 90% target engagement at repeated doses ranging from 30 to 400 mg in peripheral blood mononuclear cells ex vivo stimulated to undergo necroptosis. The favorable safety, pharmacokinetic, and pharmacodynamic profile of SIR2446M in healthy participants supports its further clinical development in patients with degenerative and inflammatory diseases.

Abstract Background Metabolic disorders are a hallmark feature of cancer. However, the evidence for the causality of circulating metabolites to promote or prevent colorectal cancer (CRC) is still lacking. We performed a two‐sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to assess the causality from genetically proxied 486 blood metabolites to CRC. Methods Genome‐wide association study (GWAS) data for exposures were extracted from 7824 Europeans GWAS on metabolite levels. GWAS data for CRC from the GWAS catalog database GCST012879 were used for the preliminary analysis. The random inverse variance weighted (IVW) is the primary analysis for causality analysis while MR‐Egger and weighted median as complementary analyses. Cochran Q test, MR‐Egger intercept test, MR‐PRESSO, Radial MR, and leave‐one‐out analysis were used for sensitivity analyses. For significant associations, additional independent CRC GWAS data GCST012880 were used for replication analysis and meta‐analysis. For the final identification of metabolites, Steiger test, linkage disequilibrium score regression, and colocalization analysis were performed for further evaluation. Multivariable MR was performed to assess the direct effect of metabolites on CRC. Results The results of this study indicated significant associations between six metabolites pyruvate (odds ratio [OR]: 0.49, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.32–0.77, p = 0.002), 1,6‐anhydroglucose (OR: 1.33, 95% CI: 1.11–1.59, p = 0.002), nonadecanoate (19:0) (OR: 0.40, 95% C I:0.4–0.68, p = 0.0008), 1‐linoleoylglycerophosphoethanolamine (OR: 0.47, 95% CI: 0.30–0.75, p = 0.001), 2‐hydroxystearate (OR: 0.39, 95% CI: 0.23–0.67, p = 0.0007), gamma‐glutamylthreonine (OR: 2.14, 95% CI: 1.02–4.50, p = 0.040) and CRC. MVMR analysis revealed that genetically predicted pyruvate, 1‐linoleoylglycerophosphoethanolamine and gamma‐glutamylthreonine can directly influence CRC independently of other metabolites. Conclusion The current work provides evidence to support the causality of the six circulating metabolites on CRC and a new perspective on the exploration of the biological mechanisms of CRC by combining genomics and metabolomics. These findings contribute to the screening, prevention and treatment of CRC.

Abstract Objectives CD4+ T cell helper and regulatory function in human cancers has been well characterised. However, the definition of tumor‐infiltrating CD4+ T cell exhaustion and how it contributes to the immune response and disease progression in human gastric cancer (GC) remain largely unknown. Methods A total of 128 GC patients were enrolled in the study. The expression of CD39 and PD‐1 on CD4+ T cells in the different samples was analysed by flow cytometry. GC‐infiltrating CD4+ T cell subpopulations based on CD39 expression were phenotypically and functionally assessed. The role of CD39 in the immune response of GC‐infiltrating T cells was investigated by inhibiting CD39 enzymatic activity. Results In comparison with CD4+ T cells from the non‐tumor tissues, significantly more GC‐infiltrating CD4+ T cells expressed CD39. Most GC‐infiltrating CD39+CD4+ T cells exhibited CD45RA−CCR7− effector–memory phenotype expressing more exhaustion‐associated inhibitory molecules and transcription factors and produced less TNF‐α, IFN‐γ and cytolytic molecules than their CD39−CD4+ counterparts. Moreover, ex vivo inhibition of CD39 enzymatic activity enhanced their functional potential reflected by TNF‐α and IFN‐γ production. Finally, increased percentages of GC‐infiltrating CD39+CD4+ T cells were positively associated with disease progression and patients' poorer overall survival. Conclusion Our study demonstrates that CD39 expression defines GC‐infiltrating CD4+ T cell exhaustion and their immunosuppressive function. Targeting CD39 may be a promising therapeutic strategy for treating GC patients.

Abstract This study aimed to investigate the awareness of high and pathological myopia among patients with high myopia. A cross‐sectional multicenter survey involving both physicians and patients was conducted between February and April 2021. The outpatient education status, doctors' expectations toward patient education, patients' awareness of high/pathological myopia, and their access to relevant knowledge were inquired, and the proportions of patients with myopia, including high and pathological myopia, were assessed. In total, the survey involved 6975 physicians and patients with myopia from 161 medical institutions in China. The prevalence of high myopia among patients was 11.3%, with 22.59% having pathological myopia. Among those with pathological myopia, 22.45% experienced high myopia complications. Approximately 48.7% of the physicians believed that patients had only a vague idea about high/pathological myopia, with certain misconceptions. Additionally, most outpatients (61.4%) had no access to specialized staff for patient education. Patients' preferences and requirements for online ophthalmology information varied based on family background, medical history, and cognition toward myopia. This study demonstrated that the awareness level among patients with myopia regarding high and pathological myopia is currently insufficient. Therefore, it is important to enhance education efforts to reduce the incidence of adverse outcomes.

Abstract Aims Leukocyte telomere length (LTL), as a biomarker of biological aging, is associated with the prevalence and complications of diabetes. This study aims to investigate the associations between LTL and all‐cause and cause‐specific mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods All participants with baseline LTL records were included from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999–2002. Death status and its causes were ascertained for National Death Index based on International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision code. Cox proportional hazards regression models were established to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) of LTL associating with all‐cause and cause‐specific mortality. Results The study enrolled 804 diabetic patients with the mean follow‐up of 14.9 ± 2.59 years. There were 367 (45.6%) all‐cause deaths, 80 (10.0%) cardiovascular deaths, and 42 (5.2%) cancer‐related deaths. Longer LTL was associated with reduced all‐cause mortality, whereas this association disappeared after adjusting for other variables. Compared with the lowest tertiles of LTL, the multivariable‐adjusted hazard ratio of cardiovascular mortality was 2.11 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.31–3.39; p

Abstract Liu et al. (2022, https://doi.org/10.1029/2021GL093691) used Rayleigh waves extracted from the cross‐correlation of ambient noise recorded by two stations to monitor the seismic velocity variations associated with the 2018 Kı̄lauea eruption. However, their study ignored the fact that the tremors on the Island of Hawai'i were dominated by a source at the Kı̄lauea summit before the eruption. Close inspection of the waveforms of the station pair PAUD‐STCD shows a simple, mistakenly identified wave traveling direction in Liu et al. (2022, https://doi.org/10.1029/2021GL093691). A correct wave traveling direction agrees with the noise source model, where the dominant tremor source should be at the Kı̄lauea summit. Because of the drastic change in the tremor source after the eruption, the cross‐correlation of the tremor records may reflect predominantly changes in the source rather than in the medium properties between the two stations.

Abstract Background Genetic mutations of IKZF1 have been frequently delineated in B‐lineage acute leukaemia (B‐ALL) but rarely elucidated in acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). IKZF1 mutations confer a poor prognosis in AML, and hotspot mutations of IKZF1, N159Y and N159S tend to occur in B‐ALL and AML respectively. However, the pathogenesis of IKZF1 N159S in AML and IKZF1 lineage susceptibility are largely unknown. Methods The genetic and clinical characteristics of IKZF1‐mutated AML patients were evaluated. Multi‐omics analysis and functional assays were performed in vitro using IKZF1 mutations knock‐in AML cell lines. Results 23 (4.84%) small sequence variants of IKZF1 were identified in 475 newly diagnosed AML (non‐M3) patients. Based on RNA sequencing, three classes of IKZF1‐related AML were defined, including 9 patients (39.13%) with IKZF1 N159S mutations, 10 (43.47%) with CEBPA mutations and 4 others (17.39%). IKZF1 N159S may define a unique subgroup with higher HOXA/B expression and native B‐cell immune fractions. Gene expression data of multiple knock‐in cell lines indicate that the lymphocyte differentiation‐related MME and CD44 kept high expression in IKZF1 N159Y but were downregulated in N159S. CUT&TAG sequencing showed that IKZF1 N159S reshaped the binding profiles of IKZF1. Integration analysis suggested that the pathogenesis of IKZF1 N159S may depend on the deregulation of several cofactors, such as oncogenic MYC and CPNE7 targets. Conclusions Collectively, we dissected the molecular spectrum and clinical features of IKZF1‐related AML, which may promote an in‐depth understanding of the pathogenesis, lineage susceptibility and clinical research of AML.

Abstract Background Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) was potentially due to the epithelial barrier injury. YES‐associated protein (YAP) is a multifunctional transcriptional factor and plays versatile roles in the regulation and maintenance of epithelial barrier in different organs and tissues. The purpose of this study is to elucidate possible effect and mechanism of YAP on the epithelial barrier of CRSwNP. Methods Patients were divided into CRSwNP group (n = 12) and control group (n = 9). The location of YAP, PDZ‐binding transcriptional co‐activator (TAZ), and Smad7 were estimated by immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence. Meanwhile, the expression of YAP, TAZ, Zona occludens‐1 (ZO‐1), E‐cadherin, and transforming growth factor‐beta1 (TGF‐β1) were detected by Western blot. After primary human nasal epithelial cells were treated with YAP inhibitor, the expression level of YAP, TAZ, ZO‐1, E‐cadherin, TGF‐β1, and Smad7 were measured by Western blot. Results Compared with the control group, the protein levels of YAP, TAZ, and Smad7 were significantly upregulated, while TGF‐β1, ZO‐1, and E‐cadherin were downregulated in CRSwNP. YAP and Smad7 demonstrated lower levels, while the expression of ZO‐1, E‐cadherin, and TGF‐β1 rose slightly after YAP inhibitor treatment in primary nasal epithelial cells. Conclusions Higher level of YAP may lead to CRSwNP epithelial barrier injury via the TGF‐β1 signaling pathway, and the inhibition of YAP can partially reverse epithelial barrier function.

Abstract Understanding the electromechanical breakdown mechanisms of polycrystalline ceramics is critical to texture engineering for high‐energy‐density dielectric ceramics. Here, an electromechanical breakdown model is developed to fundamentally understand the electrostrictive effect on the breakdown behavior of textured ceramics. Taking the Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3‐Sr0.7Bi0.2TiO3 ceramic as an example, it is found that the breakdown process significantly depends on the local electric/strain energy distributions in polycrystalline ceramics, and reasonable texture design could greatly alleviate electromechanical breakdown. Then, high‐throughput simulations are performed to establish the mapping relationship between the breakdown strength and different intrinsic/extrinsic variables. Finally, machine learning is conducted on the database from the high‐throughput simulations to obtain the mathematical expression for semi‐quantitatively predicting the breakdown strength, based on which some basic principles of texture design are proposed. The present work provides a computational understanding of the electromechanical breakdown behavior in textured ceramics and is expected to stimulate more theoretical and experimental efforts in designing textured ceramics with reliable electromechanical performances.

Abstract Amyloid‐β (Aβ) and Tau proteins are the main components of Aβ plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in Alzheimer's disease (AD), and their abnormal aggregation is closely related to the pathogenesis of AD. The production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the aggregation of Aβ and Tau form a vicious circle, which leads to the aggravation of AD. However, inhibiting the aggregation of Aβ and Tau or scavenging ROS is not able to effectively reverse the progression of AD. Herein, we prepared a H2O2 responsive multifunctional nanocomposite UCNPs@mSiO2‐MB@AuNPs (abbreviated as USMA) to inhibit the aggregation of Aβ and Tau. In this system, USMA could respond to H2O2 to detach gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and lead to the release of methylene blue (MB) from mesoporous silica (mSiO2), where AuNPs and MB can inhibit Aβ and Tau aggregation, respectively. Furthermore, USMA could consume H2O2 by reacting with them. Meanwhile, upconversion luminescence of UCNPs can be used to track USMA and monitor MB release, which could provide information on the content of MB in the lesion area. Importantly, the USMA can effectively reduce the cytotoxicity induced by Aβ and Tau aggregation. This work opens up a possibility to improve therapeutic efficacy for the treatment of AD.

Abstract With its extremely strong capability of data analysis, machine learning has shown versatile potential in the revolution of the materials research paradigm. Here, taking dielectric capacitors and lithium‐ion batteries as two representative examples, we review substantial advances of machine learning in the research and development of energy storage materials. First, a thorough discussion of the machine learning framework in materials science is presented. Then, we summarize the applications of machine learning from three aspects, including discovering and designing novel materials, enriching theoretical simulations, and assisting experimentation and characterization. Finally, a brief outlook is highlighted to spark more insights on the innovative implementation of machine learning in materials science.

Abstract Hypertension is the most common comorbidity in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) and increases in‐hospital mortality. Day‐by‐day blood pressure (BP) variability (BPV) is associated with clinical outcomes in hypertensive patients. However, little information is available on the association of BPV with the outcomes of COVID‐19 patients with hypertension. This study aimed to demonstrate whether day‐by‐day in‐hospital BPV had prognostic significance in these patients. The authors included 702 COVID‐19 patients with hypertension from Huoshenshan Hospital (Wuhan, China), who underwent valid in‐hospital BP measurements on at least seven consecutive days. Day‐by‐day BPV was assessed by standard deviation (SD), coefficient of variation (CV), and variation independent of mean (VIM). Overall, patients with severe COVID‐19 and non‐survivors had higher BPV than moderate cases and survivors, respectively. Additionally, higher BPV was correlated with greater age and higher levels of C‐reactive protein, procalcitonin, high‐sensitive cardiac troponin I, and B‐type natriuretic peptide. In multivariable Cox regression, SD of systolic BP (SBP) was predictive of mortality [hazard ratio (HR) 1.17, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.05–1.30] as well as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) (HR 1.09, 95% CI 1.01–1.16). Similar trends were observed for CV and VIM of SBP, but not indices of diastolic BP variability. The authors demonstrated that day‐by‐day in‐hospital SBP variability can independently predict mortality and ARDS in COVID‐19 patients with hypertension. And high BPV might be correlated with severe inflammation and myocardial injury. Further studies are needed to clarify whether early reduction of BPV will improve the prognosis of these patients.

Epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) mediated by fluid shear stress (FSS) in the tumor microenvironment plays an important role in driving metastasis of the malignant tumor. As a mechanotransducer, Yes‐associated protein (YAP) is known to translocate into the nucleus to initiate transcription of genes involved in cell proliferation upon extracellular biophysical stimuli. Here, we showed that FSS facilitated cytoskeleton rearrangement in hepatocellular carcinoma cells, which led to the release of YAP from its binding partner, integrin β subunit, in the cytomembrane. Moreover, we found that upregulation of guanine nucleotide exchange factor (GEF)‐H1, a microtubule‐associated Rho GEF, is a critical step in the FSS‐induced translocation of YAP. Nuclear YAP activated the expression of the EMT‐regulating transcription factor SNAI1, but suppressed the expression of N6‐methyladenosine (m6A) modulators; together, this promoted the expression of EMT‐related genes. We also observed that FSS‐treated HepG2 cells showed markedly increased tumorigenesis and metastasis in vivo. Collectively, our findings unravel the underlying molecular processes by which FSS induces translocation of YAP from the cytomembrane to the nucleus, contributes to EMT and enhances metastasis in hepatocellular carcinoma.

Hot spot gene mutations in splicing factor 3b subunit 1 (SF3B1) are observed in many types of cancer and create abundant aberrant mRNA splicing, which is profoundly implicated in tumorigenesis. Here, we identified that the SF3B1 K700E (SF3B1K700E) mutation is strongly associated with tumor growth in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Knockdown of SF3B1 significantly retarded cell proliferation and tumor growth in a cell line (Panc05.04) with the SF3B1K700E mutation. However, SF3B1 knockdown had no notable effect on cell proliferation in two cell lines (BxPC3 and AsPC1) carrying wild‐type SF3B1. Ectopic expression of SF3B1K700E but not SF3B1WT in SF3B1‐knockout Panc05.04 cells largely restored the inhibitory role induced by SF3B1 knockdown. Introduction of the SF3B1K700E mutation in BxPC3 and AsPC1 cells also boosted cell proliferation. Gene set enrichment analysis demonstrated a close correlation between SF3B1 mutation and aerobic glycolysis. Functional analyses showed that the SF3B1K700E mutation promoted tumor glycolysis, as evidenced by glucose consumption, lactate release, and extracellular acidification rate. Mechanistically, the SF3B1 mutation promoted the aberrant splicing of PPP2R5A and led to the activation of the glycolytic regulator c‐Myc via post‐translational regulation. Pharmacological activation of PP2A with FTY‐720 markedly compromised the growth advantage induced by the SF3B1K700E mutation in vitro and in vivo. Taken together, our data suggest a novel function for SF3B1 mutation in the Warburg effect, and this finding may offer a potential therapeutic strategy against PDAC with the SF3B1K700E mutation.

Abstract Acute high‐altitude (HA) exposure induces physiological responses of the heart and blood pressure (BP). However, few studies have investigated the responses associated with dipper and non‐dipper BP patterns. In this prospective study, 72 patients underwent echocardiography and 24‐h ambulatory BP testing at sea level and HA. Patients were divided into dipper and non‐dipper groups according to BP at sea level. Acute HA exposure elevated 24‐h systolic and diastolic BP and increased BP variability, particularly in the morning. Moreover, acute exposure increased left ventricular torsion, end‐systolic elastance, effective arterial elastance, and untwisting rate, but reduced peak early diastolic velocity/late diastolic velocity and peak early diastolic velocity/early diastolic velocity, implying enhanced left ventricular systolic function but impaired filling. Dippers showed pronounced increases in night‐time BP, while non‐dippers showed significant elevation in day‐time BP, which blunted differences in nocturnal BP fall, and lowest night‐time and evening BP. Dippers had higher global longitudinal strain, torsion, and untwisting rates after acute HA exposure. Variations in night‐time systolic BP correlated with variations in torsion and global longitudinal strain. Our study firstly demonstrates BP and cardiac function variations during acute HA exposure in different BP patterns and BP increases in dippers at night, while non‐dippers showed day‐time increases. Furthermore, enhanced left ventricular torsion and global longitudinal strain are associated with BP changes. Non‐dippers showed poor cardiac compensatory and maladaptive to acute HA exposure. However, the exact mechanisms involved need further illumination.

Abstract The synthesis of core@double‐shells structured TiO2@C@SiO2 nanowires (NWs) with variable thickness of carbon inner shell and SiO2 outer shell was achieved by individually controlling the chemical vapour deposition time and amount of silicon precursor added in the sol–gel synthesis. The resultant TiO2@C@SiO2 NWs filled nanocomposites exhibited an excellent dielectric performance with simultaneously improved dielectric constant and suppressed dielectric loss, which could be further regulated by individually controlling the carbon inner shell and SiO2 outer shell thickness. More importantly, the influences of the conductive carbon inner shell and insulated SiO2 outer shell thickness on the dielectric performance of nanocomposites were clearly revealed. The increase of the conductive carbon inner shell thickness would lead to an increase in dielectric constant and loss of nanocomposites, while the insulated SiO2 outer shell exhibited a totally opposite law that the dielectric constant and loss of nanocomposites decrease with increasing SiO2 outer shell thickness. Numerical simulations were also carried out to theoretically verify the relationship between the dielectric loss and SiO2 outer shell thickness. This promising controllable multi‐shell structure could be extended to a variety of hybrids to develop high‐performance dielectric nanocomposites.

Abstract Magnesium (Mg) and its alloys can be used as biomedical materials because of their excellent mechanical properties and biocompatibility. However, the rapid degradation rate of Mg‐based materials limits their application in biodegradable intravascular stents. To overcome this issue, we constructed a hydrophobic coating on magnesium. After pre‐treatments with alkali and a silane coupling agent of pure magnesium, 4,4’‐diphenylmethane‐diisocyanate (MDI) and amino‐terminated polydimethylsiloxane (H2N–PDMS–NH2) were stepwise deposited on the surface, forming an amino‐containing hydrophobic coating (–(M/P)3) to enhance the corrosion resistance. Furthermore, polypeptide TK14 was immobilised on the hydrophobic coating to promote vascular endothelial cell adhesion and proliferation. The electrochemical results revealed that the self‐corrosion current density (icorr) of –(M/P)3 decreased by approximately 4.5 orders of magnitude compared with that of pure Mg. After TK14 immobilisation, the number of endothelial cells adhering to the surface of –(M/P)3–T increased significantly. Although the corrosion resistance of –(M/P)3–T was slightly reduced, the subcutaneous implantation inflammatory response of the surrounding tissues was lower, showing suitable biocompatibility. Therefore, the polypeptide TK14 functionalised hydrophobic coating may be a promising candidate material for the interface of magnesium‐based cardiovascular implants.

Subreflector misalignment of a large steerable radio telescope induces a pointing error and reduces the gain of the antenna system. To improve the antenna’s operational efficiency, it is necessary to measure and adjust the position and attitude of the subreflector in real time. In this paper, a method based on a position sensitive detector (PSD) and laser array without an optical system is proposed to measure the six degree-of-freedom (DOF) poses of the subreflector. The laser emitted by the laser module array ensures that the PSD can be covered as it moves with the subreflector, and the PSD can obtain more than three laser beams. These ensure the measurement of all attitude changes of a large-aperture antenna subreflector. The two-dimensional coordinates of the centroids of three laser spots are extracted using the PSD, and then the bursa model is established to complete the coordinate transformation. Finally, the 6-DOF attitude information of the antenna subreflector is obtained. The results of a 6.05 m measurement simulation show that it can obtain high 6-DOF PSD attitude information. The experimental results show that the 6-DOF position and attitude information of the subreflector at a distance of 5.78 m can be obtained within seconds. Moreover, the error of the translation is within 0.014 mm and the error of the rotation is within 0.37°. This method can meet the pose measurement requirements of the subreflector.

Abstract While tremendous progress has recently been made in perovskite light‐emitting diodes (PeLEDs), large‐area blue devices feature inferior performance due to uneven morphologies and vast defects in the solution‐processed perovskite films. To alleviate these issues, a facile and reliable interface engineering scheme is reported for manipulating the crystallization of perovskite films enabled by a multifunctional molecule 2‐amino‐1,3‐propanediol (APDO)‐triggered “anchoring effect” at the grain‐growth interface. Sky‐blue perovskite films with large‐area uniformity and low trap states are obtained, showing the distinctly improved radiative recombination and hole‐transport capability. Based on the APDO‐induced interface engineering, synergistical boost in device performance is achieved for large‐area sky‐blue PeLED (measuring at 100 mm2) with a peak external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 9.2% and a highly prolonged operational lifetime. A decent EQE up to 6.1% is demonstrated for the largest sky‐blue device emitting at 400 mm2.

Reasonable communication and cooperation between enterprises are helpful for the efficient operation of a supply chain. To explore the maximum utility of an entire supply chain, we propose a supplier-manufacturer-seller supply-chain game decision-making model. We use the model as the fitness function of a genetic algorithm that calculates the optimal solution and optimizes the total utility parameters. We analyze the theoretical and practical properties of the supply-chain optimization process and implement it in MATLAB, which provides quantitative support and useful references for making business decisions and optimally managing a supply chain.

Polymer-based nanocomposites with excellent flexibility and intrinsic high breakdown strength are promising candidates for high energy density capacitors compared to ceramics counterparts. However, their energy density is relatively low due to the trade-off between permittivity and breakdown strength. In this work, the authors proposed a ferroconcrete-like structure for all-organic nanocomposites via combinatorial electrospinning and hot-pressing method. In this structure, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) serves as matrix while poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (P(VDF-HFP)) serves as reinforcement phase. This novel structure is highly effective in breaking the paradox of improved discharged energy density with decreased efficiency, as evidenced by the concurrently improved discharged energy density (∼12.15 J/cm^3 compared to 8.82 J/cm^3 of the matrix) and efficiency (∼81.7% compared to 76.8% of the matrix). Compared to conventional blending composite films, samples with ferroconcrete-like structure exhibit higher permittivity, breakdown strength, discharged energy density and efficiency. The superior energy storage performance is attributed to large aspect ratio P(VDF-HFP) fibres distributed perpendicularly to the external field, which brings about the extra enhancement of permittivity. Besides, mechanical properties are improved and restriction on carrier motion is facilitated, leading to enhanced breakdown strength and suppressed conduction. This work provides a new way to design dielectric composite for high energy density and efficiency applications.

Purpose. To investigate the long-term outcomes of refraction, corneal tomography, and wavefront aberrations after small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) for moderate and high myopia. Methods. Prospective, nonconsecutive case series. A total of 26 patients (26 eyes) who underwent SMILE from May 2010 to March 2013 at the Fudan University Eye and ENT Hospital (Shanghai, China) were enrolled. The periods of follow-up were 1 month, 1 year, 5 years, and 7 years after surgery. The routine eye examinations included uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) and corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), manifest refraction, and corneal tomography. Results. All surgeries were executed without any complications. At the final visit, an UDVA of 20/20 or better was achieved in 26 eyes (100%) and 11 eyes (42%) exhibited no change in CDVA. 9 eyes (35%) gained one line, 6 eyes (23%) gained two lines, and no eyes lost CDVA. 24 eyes (92%) and 26 eyes (100%) were within ±0.5 D and ±1.00 D of the target refraction, respectively. A mean refractive regression of −0.17 D was observed between 1 month and 7 years postoperatively. Mean corneal front curvature (MCFC) was significantly decreased between pre- and post-SMILE surgery (P0.05). Conclusion. SMILE is an effective, safe, and stable procedure for moderate and high myopia, with relatively constant corneal stability and wavefront aberrations. Coral mud, a kind of special material used for constructing islets in reclamation projects, is widely spread in the South China Sea. Combined with microstructure research, a series of triaxial tests were performed in this paper to study the static shear strength characteristics and potential factors that can influence them. The effective stress path was similar to the total stress path because of the unique microstructure resulting in a high strength and a high dissipation rate of the pore pressure in the coral mud. The initial void ratio and the initial confining pressure affected the strength and deformation characteristics of the coral mud. When the soil came to failure, the pore pressure coefficient Af varied linearly with the initial void ratio. The critical friction angle was greatly influenced by the confining pressure, and its magnitude first developed to a peak value and then decreased as the void ratio increased. This change showed that there was a linear relationship between the initial elastic modulus E0i and lgp0 as well as between the secant modulus E50 and p0. The estimation ability of Cam-Clay was verified in this research. The value of parameter λ was determined incrementally by a larger initial void ratio, while the value of parameter M decreased smoothly first and then rose slightly; the selection of parameter κ was approximately 0.0035. The results supported that the Cam-Clay model is able to simulate the stress-strain relationship of coral mud, and a referenced estimation can be reliably and efficiently obtained for the reclamation projects of constructing islets.

Purpose. To compare the corneal biomechanical properties between post-LASIK ectasia and primary keratoconus. Methods. A total of 42 eyes of 42 patients with matching age and central corneal thickness (CCT) were divided into two groups according to diagnosis of post-LASIK ectasia (PLE group; n = 21; age range: 22–47 years) and primary keratoconus (KC group; n = 21; age range: 21–47 years). The corneal biomechanical properties were assessed using Scheimpflug-based technology (Corvis ST; Oculus Optikgeräte, Wetzlar, Germany). The paired t-test and linear regression analysis were performed. Results. The PLE group had significantly higher mean stiffness parameter at the first applanation (SP-A1; 76.65 ± 21.66 vs 52.72 ± 13.65, p≤0.001) and mean stress-strain index (SSI) (SSI: 0.78 ± 0.16 versus 0.64 ± 0.12, p=0.001) than the KC group. SP-A1 was positively correlated with CCT in the PLE group (Pearson’s r = 0.816, p≤0.001), but not in the KC group (Pearson’s r = −0.014, p=0.952). No statistical correlation was observed between SSI and CCT in either group (Pearson’s r = 0.292, p=0.199, and Pearson’s r = 0.004, p=0.985, respectively). Conclusions. In our case series, KC manifested more severe than PLE in biomechanical properties. Since SSI measurements were independent of corneal thickness, it can be used for corneal biomechanical assessment.

Abstract Inorganic mixed‐halide CsPbX3‐based perovskite solar cells (PeSCs) are emerging as one of the most promising types of PeSCs on account of their thermostability compared to organic–inorganic hybrid counterparts. However, dissatisfactory device performance and high processing temperature impede their development for viable applications. Herein, a facile route is presented for tuning the energy levels and electrical properties of sol–gel‐derived ZnO electron transport material (ETM) via the doping of a classical alkali metal carbonate Cs2CO3. Compared to bare ZnO, Cs2CO3‐doped ZnO possesses more favorable interface energetics in contact with the CsPbI2Br perovskite layer, which can reduce the ohmic loss to a negligible level. The optimized PeSCs achieve an improved open‐circuit voltage of 1.28 V, together with an increase in fill factor and short‐circuit current. The optimized power conversion efficiencies of 16.42% and 14.82% are realized on rigid glass substrate and flexible plastic substrate, respectively. A high thermostability can be simultaneously obtained via defect passivation at the Cs2CO3‐doped ZnO/CsPbI2Br interface, and 81% of the initial efficiency is retained after aging for 200 h at 85 °C.

Abstract It has long been an aspirational goal to create artificial evaporators that allow omnidirectional energy absorptance, adequate water supply, and fast vapor transportation, replicating the feat of plant transpiration, to solve the global water crisis. This work reveals that magnolia fruits, as a kind of tree‐like living organism, can be outstanding 3D tree‐like evaporators through a simple carbonization process. The arterial pumping, branched diffusion, and confined evaporation are achieved by the “trunk,” “branches,” and “leaves,” respectively, of the mini tree. The mini tree possesses omnidirectional high light absorptance with minimized heat loss and gains energy from the environment. Water confined in the fruit possesses reduced vaporization enthalpy and transports quickly following the Murray's law. A record‐high vapor generation rate of 1.22 kg m−2 h−1 in dark and 3.15 kg m−2 h−1 under 1 sun illumination is achieved under the assistance of the gully‐like furry surface. The “absorption of nutrients” enables the fruit to recover valuable heavy metals as well as to produce clean water from wastewater efficiently. These findings not only reveal the hidden talent of magnolia fruits as cheap materials for vapor generation but also inspire future development of high‐performance, full‐time, and all‐weather vapor generation and water treatment devices.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) remains one of the most devastating cancer types despite the improvement of modern medicine. In our present study, we found that dickkopf-related protein 2 (DKK2) shares a higher expression in PDAC compared with adjacent pancreas tissue in tissue microarray. In addition, an elevated expression of DKK2 predicts poorer prognosis of patients and positively correlated with poor tumor differentiation. Multivariate Cox regression analysis was also performed and confirmed that the expression of DKK2 is an independent prognostic factor in PDAC. A high expression of DKK2 correlates with cell migration and epithelial mesenchymal transition based on gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) while knockdown of DKK2 in PDAC cells resulted in impaired cellular migration. Furthermore, GSEA predicts negative correlation between tumor immunity invasion and DKK2 expression. We then confirmed these results and demonstrated that a higher expression of DKK2 imparts the recruitment of CD8+ T cells. Our work suggested that DKK2 imparts tumor immune evasion and is associated with poor prognosis in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.

A highly anisotropic toughness behavior has been revealed on a forged AA6061 aluminum alloy by toughness tests with CT specimens. The toughness values with specimens loaded on the longitudinal direction are larger than that loaded on the transverse direction due to the anisotropic shape and distribution of coarse precipitates induced by the morphological anisotropy of grains during forging process. Synchrotron radiation computed tomography analysis on as-received material and arrested cracks revealed different fracture modes for the two loading configurations. The damage mechanism has been validated by finite element simulations based on the Gurson–Tvergaard–Needleman micromechanical damage model with different sets of damage parameters for the two loading configurations obtained from quantitative void volume fraction analysis on SRCT data, in situ SEM experiments, and SRCT microstructural analysis.

Soil voltage is generally assumed to show a linear relationship with distance from the cathode according to the established electroosmotic consolidation equation. However, this assumption is inconsistent with experimental results. To more reasonably reflect the soil consolidation process during electroosmosis treatment, it is necessary to consider the influence of the actual soil voltage distribution trend when establishing the electroosmotic consolidation equation. Electroosmosis results show that soil voltage exhibits nonlinear distribution characteristics against distance from the cathode. The change trend of soil voltage can be well reflected by cubic polynomial fitting. Then, the anodic electrode was taken as the research object, and a two-dimensional horizontal plane model of electroosmosis was established because it represents practical electroosmosis applications more closely than some other models. Based on this established model, the dissipation equation describing the excess pore water pressure and the soil consolidation equation were derived for the electroosmosis treatment process. The derivation process considered both linear and nonlinear soil voltage distributions, wherein the anode was closed and the cathode was open. Finally, the analytical solution was analyzed and validated with model test cases in terms of the excess pore water pressure and average moisture content of the soil. The trend observed in the measured excess pore water pressure was more consistent with that of the theoretical results calculated assuming a nonlinear soil voltage distribution than that obtained using a linear distribution. In addition, the measured values of the average moisture content in the soil were closer to the values calculated under a nonlinear distribution of soil voltage than to those calculated under a linear distribution. These results further show that the established consolidation equation is reasonable when a nonlinear distribution of soil voltage is considered. The proposed consolidation equation can thus improve the application of electroosmotic methods in the future.

Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC), a widely used adult stem cell candidate for regenerative medicine, has been shown to exert some of its therapeutic effects through the secretion of extracellular vesicles (EVs). These homogenously sized EVs of 100–150 ηm exhibited many exosome-like biophysical and biochemical properties and carry both proteins and RNAs. Recently, exosome-associated proteins in this MSC EV preparation were found to segregate primarily to those EVs that bind cholera toxin B chain (CTB), a GM1 ganglioside-specific ligand, and pulse-chase experiments demonstrated that these EVs have endosomal origin and carried many of the exosome-associated markers. Here, we report that only a fraction of the MSC EV proteome was found in CTB-bound EVs. Using Annexin V (AV) and Shiga toxin B subunit (ST) with affinities for phosphatidylserine and globotriaosylceramide, respectively, AV- and a ST-binding EV were identified. CTB-, AV- and ST–binding EVs all carried actin. However, the AV-binding EVs carried low or undetectable levels of the exosome-associated proteins. Only the ST-binding EVs carried RNA and EDA-containing fibronectin. Proteins in AV-binding EVs were also different from those released by apoptotic MSCs. CTB- and AV-binding activities were localized to the plasma membrane and cytoplasm of MSCs, while ST-binding activity was localized to the nucleus. Together, this study demonstrates that cells secrete many types of EVs. Specifically, MSCs secrete at least 3 types. They can be differentially isolated based on their affinities for membrane lipid-binding ligands. As the subcellular sites of the binding activities of these ligands and cargo load are different for each EV type, they are likely to have a different biogenesis pathway and possibly different functions.

We investigate the magnetic-field-orientation dependent magnetoelectric (ME) effect in the FeBSiC/Pb(Zr,Ti)O3(PZT)/FeBSiC laminates. It is shown that, by only using the bias-magnetic-field dependent ME response measured with the magnetic-field parallel to the surface plane of PZT slab, the magnetic-field-orientation dependent ME coefficient upon magnetic-fields of various amplitudes can be obtained via computer simulations. The simulation results match well the experimental measurements, demonstrating the applicability of the ME laminates-based sensors in detecting magnetic-fields with uncertain amplitudes and/or orientations in environment.

Our aim is to investigate the role of the AKT/PKB (protein kinase B) signaling pathway acting via orexin receptor 1 (OX1R) and the effects of orexin A (OXA) on cell proliferation in the insulin-secreting beta-cell line (INS-1 cells). Rat INS-1 cells were exposed to different concentrations of OXA in vitro and treated with OX1R antagonist (SB334867), PI3K antagonist (wortmannin), AKT antagonist (PF-04691502), or negative control. INS-1 amount of cell proliferation, viability and apoptosis, insulin secretion, OX1R protein expression, caspase-3 activity, and AKT protein levels were determined. We report that OXA (10-10 to 10-6 M) stimulates INS-1 cell proliferation and viability, reduces the proapoptotic activity of caspase-3 to protect against apoptotic cell death, and increases insulin secretion. Additionally, AKT phosphorylation was stimulated by OXA (10-10 to 10-6 M). However, the OX1R antagonist SB334867 (10-6 M), the PI3K antagonist wortmannin (10-8 M), the AKT antagonist PF-04691502 (10-6 M), or the combination of both abolished the effects of OXA to a certain extent. These results suggest that the upregulation of OXA-OX1R mediated by AKT activation may inhibit cell apoptosis and promote cell proliferation in INS-1 cells. This finding provides functional evidence of the biological actions of OXA in rat insulinoma cells.
