Neural network (NN) models have made a significant impact on fatigue-related engineering communities and are expected to increase rapidly soon due to the recent advancements in machine learning and artificial intelligence. A comprehensive review of fatigue modeling methods using NNs is lacking and will help to recognize past achievements and suggest future research directions. Thus, this paper presents a survey of 251 publications between 1990 and July 2021. The NN modeling in fatigue is classified into five applications: fatigue life prediction, fatigue crack, fatigue damage diagnosis, fatigue strength, and fatigue load. A wide range of NN architectures are employed in the literature and are summarized in this review. An overview of important considerations and current limitations for the application of NNs in fatigue is provided. Statistical analysis for the past and the current trend is provided with representative examples. Existing gaps and future research directions are also presented based on the reviewed articles.

This study used constitutive CD226 gene knockout (KO) mice as a model to investigate the functions and mechanisms of CD226 in megakaryocyte (MK) maturation and platelet activation. Although CD226 deficiency did not cause MK polyploidization or platelet granule abnormalities, increased MK counts were detected in the femora bone marrow (BM) and spleen of CD226 KO mice. Particularly, CD226 KO mice have a more extensive membrane system in MKs and platelets than wild-type (WT) mice. We also demonstrated that CD226 KO mice displayed increased platelet counts, shortened bleeding time, and enhanced platelet aggregation. CD226 KO platelets had an increased mature platelet ratio compared to the control platelets. In addition, the observed reduction in bleeding time may be due to decreased nitric oxide (NO) production in the platelets. Platelet-specific CD226-deficient mice showed similar increased MK counts, shortened bleeding time, enhanced platelet aggregation, and decreased NO production in platelets. Furthermore, we performed middle cerebral artery occlusion-reperfusion surgery on WT and CD226 KO mice to explore the potential effect of CD226 on acute ischemia-reperfusion injury; the results revealed that CD226 deficiency led to significantly increased infarct area. Thus, CD226 is a promising candidate for the treatment of thrombotic disorders.

A new critical plane-energy model is proposed in this paper for multiaxial fatigue life prediction of metals. A brief review of existing methods, especially on the critical plane-based and energy-based methods, is given first. Special focus is on the Liu–Mahadevan critical plane approach, which has been shown to work for both brittle and ductile metals. One potential drawback of the Liu–Mahadevan model is that it needs an empirical calibration parameter for non-proportional multiaxial loadings because only the strain terms are used and the out-of-phase hardening cannot be explicitly considered. An energy-based model using the Liu–Mahadevan concept is proposed with the help of the Mroz–Garud plasticity model. Thus, the empirical calibration for non-proportional loading is not needed because the out-of-phase hardening is naturally included in the stress calculation. The model predictions are compared with experimental data from open literature, and the proposed model is shown to work for both proportional and non-proportional multiaxial loadings without the empirical calibration.

Key points Patients with diabetes show a blunted cardiac inotropic response to β-adrenergic stimulation despite normal cardiac contractile reserve. Acute insulin stimulation impairs β-adrenergically induced contractile function in isolated cardiomyocytes and Langendorff-perfused hearts. In this study, we aimed to examine the potential effects of hyperinsulinaemia associated with high-fat diet (HFD) feeding on the cardiac β2-adrenergic receptor signalling and the impacts on cardiac contractile function. We showed that 8 weeks of HFD feeding leads to reductions in cardiac functional reserve in response to β-adrenergic stimulation without significant alteration of cardiac structure and function, which is associated with significant changes in β2-adrenergic receptor phosphorylation at protein kinase A and G-protein receptor kinase sites in the myocardium. The results suggest that clinical intervention might be applied to subjects in early diabetes without cardiac symptoms to prevent further cardiac complications. Abstract Patients with diabetes display reduced exercise capability and impaired cardiac contractile reserve in response to adrenergic stimulation. We have recently uncovered an insulin receptor and adrenergic receptor signal network in the heart. The aim of this study was to understand the impacts of high-fat diet (HFD) on the insulin–adrenergic receptor signal network in hearts. After 8 weeks of HFD feeding, mice exhibited diabetes, with elevated insulin and glucose concentrations associated with body weight gain. Mice fed an HFD had normal cardiac structure and function. However, the HFD-fed mice displayed a significant elevation of phosphorylation of the β2-adrenergic receptor (β2AR) at both the protein kinase A site serine 261/262 and the G-protein-coupled receptor kinase site serine 355/356 and impaired adrenergic reserve when compared with mice fed on normal chow. Isolated myocytes from HFD-fed mice also displayed a reduced contractile response to adrenergic stimulation when compared with those of control mice fed normal chow. Genetic deletion of the β2AR led to a normalized adrenergic response and preserved cardiac contractile reserve in HFD-fed mice. Together, these data indicate that HFD promotes phosphorylation of the β2AR, contributing to impairment of cardiac contractile reserve before cardiac structural and functional remodelling, suggesting that early intervention in the insulin–adrenergic signalling network might be effective in prevention of cardiac complications in diabetes.

Background Fourth-generation human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) screening assays have been used in many laboratories. The Elecsys® HIV combi PT assay is a new kind of fourth-generation HIV screening assay developed to allow earlier detection of seroconversion. Methods A total of 271,845 routine specimens were detected using the Elecsys® HIV combi assay and Elecsys® HIV combi PT assay from September 2010 to December 2012 in a large university hospital. Repeatedly, reactive screening samples were confirmed according to recommended confirmatory algorithms. Results The false-positive rate and positive predictive value (PPV) of two assays are 0.08 and 78.35%, respectively, for the Elecsys® HIV combi assay and 0.07 and 82.21% for the Elecsys® HIV combi PT assay. A novel method was developed using molecular imprinting technology (MIT) coupled with flow-injection chemiluminescence (FI-CL) for highly sensitive detection of phenformin hydrochloride (PH). The phenformin imprinted polymer was synthesized with methacrylic acid (MAA) as a functional monomer and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as a cross-linker. Newly synthesized molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) particles were packed into a column as a selective recognition element for determination of PH. A CL method for the determination of PH was developed based on the CL reaction of PH with N-bromosuccinimide sensitized by eosin Y in basic media. The optimization of detection conditions was investigated. The CL intensity responded linearly to the concentration of PH in the range 0.09-2.0 µg/mL, with a correlation coefficient of 0.9920. The detection limit was 0.031 µg/mL. The relative standard deviation for the determination of 1.0 µg/mL PH solution was 1.0% (n = 11). The method was applied to the determination of PH in urine samples, with satisfactory results.

An in situ optical microscopy fatigue testing is proposed in this paper to investigate the forward and reversed plastic zone size under cyclic loadings for Al-7075-T6. This experimental study is used to verify the hypotheses in a recently developed small time scale formulation of fatigue crack growth. During the testing, the entire cyclic loading cycle is divided into a certain number of steps. Images of the crack tip are taken at each step. The full strain field around the crack tip is determined using the digital image correlation (DIC) technique. The plastic zone size is obtained by combining the DIC results and the material constitutive relationship. Experimental measurements from the proposed study are compared with theoretical predictions. It is observed that the crack closure has a large effect on the reversed plastic zone size. The plastic zone size remains almost constant when the unloading path is below a certain stress level, which is one of the hypotheses used in a previous crack growth model. Discussions are given for the modelling of plastic zone size variation under cyclic loadings and several conclusions are drawn based on the current investigation.

A new mechanism modelling is proposed in this paper to explain the shot peening effect on fatigue life predictions of mechanical components. The proposed methodology is based on the crack growth analysis of shot peened specimens, which are affected by the interaction of surface roughness and residual stress produced during the shot peening process. An asymptotic stress intensity factor solution is used to include the surface roughness effect and a time-varying residual stress function is used to change the crack tip stress ratio during the crack propagation. Parametric studies are performed to investigate the effects of surface roughness and the residual stress relaxation rate. Following this, a simplified effective residual stress model is proposed based on the developed mechanism modelling. A wide range of experimental data is used to validate the proposed mechanism modelling. Very good agreement is observed between experimental data and model predictions.

Norbornene polymerizations proceeded in toluene with bis(β-ketoamino)nickel(II) {Ni[CH3C(O)CHC(NR)CH3]2 [R = phenyl (1) or naphthyl (2)]} complexes as the catalyst precursors and the organo-Lewis compound tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane [B(C6F5)3] as a unique cocatalyst. The polymerization conditions, such as the cocatalyst/catalyst ratio (B/Ni), catalyst concentration, monomer/catalyst ratio (norbornene/Ni), polymerization temperature, and polymerization time, were studied in detail. Both bis(β-ketoamino)nickel(II)/B(C6F5)3 catalytic systems showed noticeably high conversions and activities. The polymerization activities were up to 3.64 × 107 g of polymer/mol of Ni h for complex 1/(B(C6F5)3 and 3.80 × 107 g of polymer/mol of Ni h for complex 2/B(C6F5)3, and very high conversions of 90–95% were maintained; both polymerizations provided high-molecular-weight polynorbornenes with molecular weight distributions (weight-average molecular weight/number-average molecular weight) of 2.5–3.0. The achieved polynorbornenes were confirmed to be vinyl-addition and atactic polymers through the analysis of Fourier transform infrared, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR spectra, and the thermogravimetric analysis results showed that the polynorbornenes exhibited good thermal stability (decomposition temperature > 410 °C). © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Styrene (St) was polymerized in toluene solution by using bis(β-ketoamino)nickel(II) complex as the catalyst precursor and methylaluminoxane (MAO) as the cocatalyst. The polymerization conditions, such as Al : Ni ratio, monomer concentration, reaction temperature, and polymerization time, were studied in detail. Both of the bis(β-ketoamino)nickel(II)/MAO catalytic systems exhibited higher activity for polymerization of styrene, and polymerization gave moderate molecular weight of polystyrene with relatively narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn < 1.6). The obtained polymer was confirmed to be atactic polystyrene by analyzing the stereo-triad distributions mm, mr, and rr of aromatic carbon C1 in NMR spectrum of the polymer. The mechanism of the polymerization was also discussed and a metal–carbon coordination mechanism was proposed. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 2007

A new multiaxial fatigue damage model named characteristic plane approach is proposed in this paper, in which the strain components are used to correlate with the fatigue damage. The characteristic plane is defined as a material plane on which the complex three-dimensional (3D) fatigue problem can be approximated using the plane strain components. Compared with most available critical plane-based models for multiaxial fatigue problem, the physical basis of the characteristic plane does not rely on the observations of the fatigue crack in the proposed model. The cracking information is not required for multiaxial fatigue analysis, and the proposed model can automatically adapt for different failure modes, such as shear or tensile-dominated failure. Mean stress effect is also included in the proposed model by a correction factor. The life predictions of the proposed fatigue damage model under constant amplitude loading are compared with a wide range of metal fatigue results in the literature.

Pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ) is an antioxidant that also stimulates nerve growth factor (NGF) synthesis and secretion. In an earlier pilot study in our laboratory, Schwann cell growth was accelerated, and NGF mRNA expression and NGF secretion were promoted. The present study was designed to explore the possible nerve-inducing effect of PQQ on a nerve tube model over a 1-cm segmental deficit. An 8-mm sciatic nerve deficit was created in a rat model and bridged by a 1-cm silicone tube. Then,10 mul of 0.03 mmol/l PQQ were perfused into the silicone chamber in the PQQ group. The same volume of normal saline was delivered in the control group. Each animal underwent functional observation (SFI) at 2-week intervals and electrophysiological studies at 4-week intervals for 12 weeks. Histological and morphometrical analyses were performed at the end of the experiment, 12 weeks after tube implantation. Using a digital image-analysis system, thickness of the myelin sheath was measured, and total numbers of regenerated axons were counted. There was a significant difference in SFI, electrophysiological index (motor-nerve conduct velocity and amplitude of activity potential), and morphometrical results (regenerated axon number and thickness of myelin sheath) in nerve regeneration between the PQQ group and controls (P < 0.05). More mature, high-density, newly regenerated nerve was observed in the PQQ group. We conclude that PQQ is a potent enhancer for the regeneration of peripheral nerves.

Numerical differentiation is one source of loss of resolution in the differential transformation of viscosity to MWD. Resolution can be improved by increasing the amount of viscosity data, keeping in mind that optimizing this process is necessary for practical reasons. This problem was approached by finding the minimum point for practical reasons. This problem was approached by finding the minimum point density and coverage required to resolve bimodality. For given point density and range, the higher the superposition between the viscosity data and the “knee” in the viscosity function produced by each mode, the better the resolution. Testing time can be reduced and resolution can still be preserved by placing more points in the “knee” region in the viscosity function and by skipping the unnecessary points at low shear rates.
