Abstract

Single-layer graphene containing molecular-sized in-plane pores is regarded as a promising membrane material for high-performance gas separations due to its atomic thickness and low gas transport resistance. However, typical etching-based pore generation methods cannot decouple pore nucleation and pore growth, resulting in a trade-off between high areal pore density and high selectivity. In contrast, intrinsic pores in graphene formed during chemical vapor deposition are not created by etching. Therefore, intrinsically porous graphene can exhibit high pore density while maintaining its gas selectivity. In this work, the density of intrinsic graphene pores is systematically controlled for the first time, while appropriate pore sizes for gas sieving are precisely maintained. As a result, single-layer graphene membranes with the highest H2 /CH4 separation performances recorded to date (H2 permeance > 4000 GPU and H2 /CH4 selectivity > 2000) are fabricated by manipulating growth temperature, precursor concentration, and non-covalent decoration of the graphene surface. Moreover, it is identified that nanoscale molecular fouling of the graphene surface during gas separation where graphene pores are partially blocked by hydrocarbon contaminants under experimental conditions, controls both selectivity and temperature dependent permeance. Overall, the direct synthesis of porous single-layer graphene exploits its tremendous potential as high-performance gas-sieving membranes.

Abstract

Porous graphene and other atomically thin 2D materials are regarded as highly promising membrane materials for high-performance gas separations due to their atomic thickness, large-scale synthesizability, excellent mechanical strength, and chemical stability. When these atomically thin materials contain a high areal density of gas-sieving nanoscale pores, they can exhibit both high gas permeances and high selectivities, which is beneficial for reducing the cost of gas-separation processes. Here, recent modeling and experimental advances in nanoporous atomically thin membranes for gas separations is discussed. The major challenges involved, including controlling pore size distributions, scaling up the membrane area, and matching theory with experimental results, are also highlighted. Finally, important future directions are proposed for real gas-separation applications of nanoporous atomically thin membranes.

Abstract

Abstract Emulsion gels with specific rheological properties have widespread applications in foods, cosmetics, and biomedicines. However, the constructions of water‐in‐oil emulsion gels are still challenging, due to the limited interactions available in the continuous oil phase. Here, a versatile strategy is developed to prepare a new type of emulsion gels, called Jammed Pickering emulsion gels (JPEGs). In the JPEG system, SiO2 NPs in the oil phase serve as colloidal surfactants to stabilize water‐in‐oil Pickering emulsions, while positively‐charged NH2‐PEG‐NH2 molecules in the water phase cross‐link negatively‐charged SiO2 NPs at the water/oil interface, making NP‐stabilized water droplets hard to deform and thus jamming the emulsion system to form emulsion gels. The strategy to prepare JPEGs is versatile and applicable to diverse oil phases. The designed JPEGs possess many advantages, including good biocompatibility for widespread applications, shear‐thinning rheological properties for easy processing, good stability Over a wide temperature range and Against centrifugation, good adhesion to wet tissues for tissue engineering, and well‐controlled sustained release Under intestinal conditions. The developed JPEGs are demonstrated to be a promising delivery platform and the strategy to achieve JPEGs will trigger more innovations of material design.

22. Effects of Long‐Term Exposure to Ambient Formaldehyde on Hypertension and Angina Pectoris Symptoms: Evidence From the WHO SAGE Cohort Study

Abstract

Background We aimed to investigate the associations of long‐term exposure to ambient formaldehyde with hypertension and angina pectoris symptoms in Chinese adults. Methods and Results Participants' information was obtained from the WHO SAGE (World Health Organization Study on Global Aging and Adult Health) study. The Cox proportional hazards regression model was applied to estimate the associations of formaldehyde with hypertension and angina pectoris symptoms. Mediating effect analysis was used to investigate the mediating effect of hypertension between formaldehyde exposure and angina pectoris symptoms. Long‐term exposure to formaldehyde was positively associated with the risk of angina pectoris symptoms (hazard ratio [HR], 1.66 [95% CI, 1.29–2.13], per interquartile range [IQR], 3.33, 1015 molecules/cm2) and hypertension (HR, 1.17 [95% CI, 1.02–1.34], per IQR, 3.34, 1015 molecules/cm2). The associations between formaldehyde and angina pectoris symptoms were greater in participants aged ≥65 years (HR, 1.90 [95% CI, 1.29–2.80]) and in rural areas (HR, 2.71 [95% CI, 1.54–4.77]), whereas the associations of formaldehyde with hypertension were stronger in men (HR, 1.27 [95% CI, 1.02–1.58]), rural areas (HR, 1.22 [95% CI, 0.94–1.59]), and in ever smokers (HR, 1.33 [95% CI, 1.02–1.72]). The mediation effect analysis indicated that 18.44% (95% CI, 2.17–37.65) of the association between formaldehyde exposure and angina pectoris symptoms was mediated by hypertension. Conclusions Long‐term exposure to ambient formaldehyde was positively associated with hypertension and angina pectoris symptoms. The effects of formaldehyde may be modified by age, sex, urbanicity, and smoking status. Hypertension might play a mediating effect in formaldehyde‐induced angina pectoris symptoms.

32. The Causal Relationship between Immune-Mediated Inflammatory Diseases and Aortic Aneurysm: A Bidirectional Two-Sample Mendelian Randomization Study

Abstract

Background and Objective. Observational studies have frequently linked aortic aneurysm (AA) to immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs) as a cardiovascular complication. However, the presence of confounding factors has cast doubt on the validity of this association and the potential for reverse causality. This study employs a two-sample bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) approach to elucidate the causal relationships between AA and IMIDs. Methods. We sourced genetic association data from public genome-wide association study databases for populations of European ancestry. Adhering to MR principles, we identified valid instrumental variables from genetic variants. A range of statistical methods were applied for MR analysis, with the inverse variance weighted (IVW) method emerging as the most reliable estimator of causality in this context. Results. The causal estimates obtained using the IVW method revealed a significant association between genetically predicted AA and rheumatoid arthritis (RA; OR = 1.06, 95% CI = 1.01–1.12, P=0.029). Conversely, genetically predicted RA showed nonsignificant causal estimates of AA (OR = 0.97, 95% CI = 0.92–1.02, P=0.204). Additionally, there was no evidence to suggest that AA may increase the risk of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Crohn’s disease (CD), ulcerative colitis (UC), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and psoriasis (PSO). The sensitivity analysis confirmed the absence of heterogeneity or horizontal pleiotropy effects. Conclusion. Our findings shed light on the causal effects between genetically predisposed AA and RA. They also suggest the potential clinical utility of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) risk genetic markers for developing personalized treatment and prevention strategies.

Abstract

Cervical cancer is one of the most common gynaecological women cancer and suggested to be modulated by estrogenic signals. G protein-coupled receptor (GPER), a seven-transmembrane G protein-coupled receptor, has been reported to regulate the cell proliferation of various cancers. But there is no study investigating the effects of GPER on the progression of cervical cancer. In the present study, we revealed for the first time that GPER was also highly expressed in various human cervical cancer cells. Activation of GPER via its specific agonist G-1 induced G2/M cell cycle arrest and down regulation of cyclin B via a time dependent manner. Furthermore, G-1 treatment induced sustained activation of extracellular-signal-regulated kinases (ERK)1/2 via epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) signals. Both inhibitors of ERK1/2 and EGFR significantly abolished G-1-induced suppression of cell proliferation and down regulation of cyclin B. Generally, our study revealed that GPER is highly expressed in human cervical cancer cells and its activation inhibits cell proliferation via EGFR/ERK1/2 signals. It suggested that G-1 can be considered as a potential new pharmacological tool to reduce the growth of cervical cancer. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract

The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of increased cAMP levels in response to pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide 27 (PACAP27) on atrial atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) secretion in rabbit atria. A perfused beating atrial model was used in the present study and cAMP efflux and ANP levels in atrial perfusates were measured by radioimmnoassay. At 100 nmol/L, PACAP27 increased cAMP production, which resulted in subsequent inhibition of ANP secretion. Nicardipine (1.0 micromol/L), an L-type Ca2+ channel blocker, attenuated inhibition of ANP secretion by PACAP27. Staurosporine (1.0 micromol/L), a non-specific protein kinase inhibitor, and H-89 (1.0 micromol/L), a cAMP-dependent protein kinase A (PKA) inhibitor, completely blocked the inhibition of ANP secretion in response to PACAP27 but had no effect on PACAP27-induced increases in cAMP. In conclusion, the results suggest that increased cAMP levels in response to PACAP27 negatively regulate ANP secretion via the adenylate cyclase-cAMP-PKA signalling pathway in rabbit atria and that L-type Ca2+ channels may be involved, in part, in the regulation of ANP secretion by cAMP.

Abstract

Abstract Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) has been widely used with its main characteristics of resilience, scalability, and mobility. However, the node battery capacity in WSN is limited. In addition, in scenes with emergencies such as forest ecological monitoring, data packets of wildfire emergencies have higher real‐time requirements than periodic normal data. Therefore, this paper proposes an energy‐efficient MAC protocol based on Receiver initiation and Multi‐Priority Backoff (RMP‐MAC). RMP‐MAC adopts the wake‐up matching mechanism initiated by the receiver. The sender adjusts its schedule according to the wake‐up information of the receiver to match the receiver, which reduces the energy consumption of idle listening. In addition, RMP‐MAC proposes a multi‐priority factor adaptive backoff mechanism based on event priority, node remaining energy level, and the number of data packets waiting in the transmission queue, ensuring the transmission of emergency data in the actual situation of forest ecological monitoring. Simulation experiments show that compared with PB‐MAC, AP‐MAC, and MPQ‐MAC, RMP‐MAC can reduce energy consumption by 20.22%, 12.47%, and 6.62% respectively. In addition, it has improved in the average collisions, network throughput, and average delay of packets.
