Abstract

The crystal of [Cu(pa)(vim)(2)](n) (where pa=phthalic acid dianion, vim= 1-vinyl-1H-imidazole) was synthesized and its structure was characterized by X-ray single crystal diffractometry and elemental analysis. It crystallizes in monoclinic system, C2/c space group with the cell parameters of a=1.6527(3) nm, b=0.81800(16) nm, c= 1.4463(3) nm, beta = 113.19(3)degrees, V= 1.7973(7) nm(3), Z=4, and D(c)= 1.537 g.cm(-3). Final R indices [I>2 sigma(I)] are: R(1) = 0.0476, wR(2)=0.1235 while R indices for all data are: R(1)=0.0693. wR(2)=0.1355. The title compound exhibits an existence of polymeric zigzag chains extended along c-axis. Each Cu(II) ion is located at a crystallographic center of symmetry being coordinated by two N and two O atoms in a distorted square-planar geometry. The electrochemical studies reveal that redox of Cu(2+)/Cu(+) is a quasi-reversible one-electron process.

Abstract

Two novel coordination polymers [Zn(pa)(vim)(2)](n) (1) and [Zn(pa)(eim)(2)](n) (2) (pa=phthalic acid dianion, vim=1-vinyl-1H-imidazole, eim=1-ethyl-1H-imidazole) have been synthesized and their structures characterized by X-ray single crystal diffractometry and elemental analysis. Both of the complexes consist of [Zn(L)21 (L=vim for 1; eim for 2) entities linked into polymeric zigzag chains along the crystallographic c-axis by bridging phthalate anions in the mu(2)-1,2 coordination mode. The coordination around each Zn(II) atom is tetrahedral. There are only van der Waals interactions between the chains in 1, while the three-dimensional network in 2 is assembled by C-H center dot center dot center dot O contacts. The electrochemical studies reveal that redoxes of Zn(2+)/Zn in complexes 1 and 2 are irreversible processes.

Abstract

Background: Spitz nevi, atypical Spitz tumors and spitzoid melanomas ('spitzoid lesions') represent controversial and poorly understood cutaneous melanocytic lesions that are difficult to diagnose histologically. It is unknown how these terms are used by pathologists., Methods: We describe use of Spitz-related terminology using data from the Melanoma Pathology (M-Path) study database comprising pathologists' interpretations of biopsy slides, a nation-wide study evaluating practicing US pathologists' (N = 187) diagnoses of melanocytic lesions (8976 independent diagnostic assessments on 240 total test cases, with 1 slide per case)., Results: Most pathologists (90%) used the Spitz-related terminology. However, significant variation exists in which specific lesions were diagnosed as spitzoid and in the corresponding treatment recommendations. Recommendations ranged from 'no further treatment' to 'wide excision of 10 mm or greater' with no category capturing more than 50% of responses. For spitzoid melanoma diagnoses, 90% of pathologists recommended excision with ≥10 mm margin. Pathologists report less confidence in diagnosing these lesions compared with other melanocytic proliferations and are more likely to request second opinions and additional clinical information (all p < 0.05)., Conclusions: Spitzoid lesions are often not classified in any standardized way, evoke uncertainty in diagnosis by pathologists, and elicit variability in treatment recommendations., (© 2016 John Wiley & Sons A/S.
