Background: While headache disorders are linked to low physical activity levels, the impact of depression on this relationship is unclear., Objective: To assess how single and comorbid diagnoses of migraine and tension-type headache (TTH) interact with depression and leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) levels in The Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil)., Methods: In this cross-sectional analysis based on the ELSA-Brasil baseline data, the relationship of migraine, TTH (both assessed with the International Classification of Headache Disorders, Second Edition), and depression (assessed with the Clinical Interview Schedule-Revised) with LTPA levels (International Physical Activity Questionnaire) was investigated by employing linear regression models. Models were adjusted for sociodemographic, lifestyle, and clinical covariates, and interaction terms were created to examine additive effects of comorbid conditions., Results: Among 14,088 participants, 54.4% (7668/14,088) were female, prevalence rates were: TTH = 39.6% (5573/14,088), migraine = 27.0% (3806/14,088), depression = 0.7% (94/14,088), depression + TTH = 1.1% (148/14,088), and depression + migraine = 2.5% (356/14,088). The mean (standard deviation) LTPA levels across the groups were: no headache + no depression = 148.7 (183.0) min/week, TTH = 133.5 (170.1) min/week, migraine = 110.3 (154.8) min/week, depression = 76.5 (146.3) min/week, depression + TTH = 84.5 (127.7) min/week, and depression + migraine = 64.3 (123.2) min/week. Negative associations were found for depression (β = -55.1, 95% confidence interval [CI] -93.6 to -17.0; p = 0.005), migraine (β = -24.7, 95% CI -33.2 to -15.4; p < 0.001), and TTH (β = -15.5, 95% CI -23.1 to -7.6; p < 0.001) with LTPA. No interaction effect was observed for depression + TTH (β = 36.0, 95% CI -12.6 to 84.6; p = 0.147) and depression + migraine (β = 31.7, 95% CI -11.3 to 74.7; p = 0.149), indicating no additive effect of comorbid conditions on LTPA levels. After adjusting for headache attack frequency, only depression + migraine remained negatively associated with LTPA (β = -38.7, 95% CI -71.6 to -5.8; p = 0.021)., Conclusions: Headache disorders and depression were independently and inversely associated with LTPA, with the strongest effects seen in depression alone or comorbid with migraine., (© 2024 American Headache Society.)

Thymol (THY) exhibits antibacterial and antioxidant properties. Recent studies have also shown that THY presents anti-inflammatory and healing properties. This review focused on in vitro and in vivo investigations related to THY utilization, as an anti-inflammatory and/or wound healing agent. PubMed, WebOfScience, and Scopus were examined. Independent reviewers conducted all diagram steps. PRISMA was followed for data extraction. RoB 2 and SYRCLE were utilized to assess the risk of bias for in vitro and animal studies. Meta-analysis was performed for in vitro and in vivo articles that investigated THY as an anti-inflammatory agent. Thirty-six and 15 articles were included in the qualitative analysis and meta-analysis, respectively. Studies showed high risk of bias related to sampling, allocation procedures, randomization, and blinding. Even so, for in vitro studies, significant result was observed for IL-2. For in vivo studies, significant results were found for IL-1, IL-17, TNF-α, AST, MPO, and CRP, with higher levels noticed in control groups. THY presents significant properties as anti-inflammatory, ameliorating affections of the digestive system, cardiovascular problems, respiratory system and dermal damages, and burns. Researches are needed to clarify THY dose-response relationship and its mechanism of action, especially in the application of THY as a healing agent., (© 2022 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Background: COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 associated with haematological manifestations (thrombolytic events)., Aims: Considering the high prevalence of the thrombotic scenarios associated with COVID-19, the aim of this study was to perform a systematic review of the available literature, concerning the relation of COVID-19 and the thrombotic events, and identify prognostic factors for these events., Materials & Methods: PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus databases were searched. Independent reviewers conducted all flow diagram steps. For qualitative analysis, Oxford level of evidence and Newcastle-Ottawa scale were used in the eligible articles. For the prognostic factors, a meta-analysis was conducted to age, number of neutrophils and platelets, and levels of ferritin, C-reactive protein, lactate dehydrogenase and D-dimer. Publication bias was accessed by funnel plot and by trim-and-fill test. Trim-and-fill test was also applied to evaluate meta-analysis bias., Results: Twenty articles were included in the qualitative analysis, and 6 articles were included in the meta-analysis. Case-control studies showed bias related to exposure, and the main bias in cohort studies were related to selection and outcome. All articles received score 4 for the level of evidence. Hypertension and diabetes were the comorbidities more frequently associated with thrombolytic events. Significant results were found regarding D-dimer (P < .0001) and age (P = .0202) for thrombotic events in patients diagnosed with COVID-19., Conclusion: Patients older than 60 years, with hypertension, diabetes and D-Dimer values above 3.17 µg/mL, can be considered prognostic factors for developing thrombotic events due to COVID-19., (© 2021 Stichting European Society for Clinical Investigation Journal Foundation. Sepsis is characterized by a dysregulated immune response to infection characterized by an early hyperinflammatory and oxidative response followed by a subsequent immunosuppression phase. Although there have been some advances in the treatment of sepsis, mortality rates remain high, urging for the search of new therapies. β -Lapachone ( β -Lap) is a natural compound obtained from Tabebuia avellanedae Lorentz ex Griseb. with several pharmacological properties including bactericidal, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activity. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of β -Lap in a mouse sepsis model. To this, we tested two therapeutic protocols in mice submitted to cecal ligation and puncture- (CLP-) induced sepsis. First, we found that in pretreated animals, β -Lap reduced the systemic inflammatory response and improved bacterial clearance and mouse survival. Moreover, β -Lap also decreased lipid peroxidation and increased the total antioxidant capacity in the serum and peritoneal cavity of septic animals. In the model of severe sepsis, the posttreatment with β -Lap was able to increase the survival of animals and maintain the antioxidant defense function. In conclusion, the β -Lap was able to increase the survival of septic animals by a mechanism involving immunomodulatory and antioxidant protective effects., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing interests., (Copyright © 2020 Ana L. de B. Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the allodynia score in headache attacks related and not related to menstruation in women diagnosed with menstrually related migraine without aura., Background: Allodynia is an important symptom in migraine and has been associated with migraine chronification. No study has yet compared prospectively allodynia in menstrual vs non-menstrual attacks within the same cohort of patients., Methods: This is a prospective cohort study, where participants had the 12-item Allodynia Symptom Checklist (ASC-12) assessed after 1, 2, 4, and 24 hours from the onset of migraine attacks in 2 different conditions, with menstrual migraine attack (MM+) and with non-menstrual migraine attack (MM-)., Results: A total of 600 women with headache complaints were screened from March 2013 to July 2014 in a headache outpatient or headache tertiary clinic. From these, 55 participants were recruited, and 32 completed the study. Participants' mean age was 27 years, BMI was 22.1, menarche age 12 years, migraine history was 11.5 years, and most women were young (ranged from 17 to 44 years of age), were in higher school (13/32 = 41%), single (20/32 = 63%), and used contraceptives (22/32 = 69%). Multiple pairwise comparisons of ANCOVA's test showed significant higher ASC-12 scores in MM+ group compared to MM- group at 2 hours [mean, 95% CI of difference: 2.3 (0.31, 4.7), P = .049)]. For the ASC-12 categorical scores (absent, mild, moderate, and severe) MM+ yielded higher scores than MM- at 1 hour (z = -3.08, P = .021) and 4 hours (z = -2.97, P = .03)., Conclusion: This study demonstrated that in the patents from tertiary headache center assessed, menstrual-related migraine attacks augment allodynia scores in the beginning of attacks compared to non-menstrual migraine attacks., (© 2019 American Headache Society.)

Ethanol extracts of Clytostoma ramentaceum Bur. & K. Schum and Mansoa hirsuta DC. (Bignoniaceae) inhibited the growth of standardized cultures of Aspergillus niger and Fusarium oxysporum, at concentrations of 400 microg and 500 microg, in bioautographic assays. The activity-guided fractionation of C. ramentaceum extract afforded ursolic acid and 2-(3',4'-dihydroxyphenyl) ethanol, both active against the test fungi (100 microg). These compounds are reported for the first time in C. ramentaceum and were not detected in M. hirsuta extract, according to HPLC analysis. The bioguided study of M. hirsuta resulted in five active fractions (100 to 200 microg), whose GC-MS analysis allowed us to identify 11 compounds, mostly alkanols and alkanodiols, that may be regarded as the antifungal constituents of M. hirsuta.
