Bronchial asthma is a common clinical disease in pediatrics. It affects brain function and causes cognitive impairment due to long-term hypoxia in the brain. Studies have shown attention deficits in asthma children, but lack the basis for brain studies. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) based on functional connectivity analysis was used in this study, and 31 asthma children and typically developing children (TDC) were compared in degree centricity (DC), voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC) and continuous performance test (CPT). The study found that the correct number of CPT in the asthma group was significantly lower than the TDC group. And the reaction time in the asthma group was significantly longer than the TDC group. PURPOSE: Upper blepharoplasty may be related to dry eye symptoms since the function of the orbicularis oculi muscle may affect the tear film. We aimed to assess the effect of blepharoplasty with or without the removal of a strip of orbicularis oculi muscle on tear film dynamics and dry eye symptoms.METHODS: A double-blind, randomized, controlled trial comparing upper blepharoplasty without (group A) or with (group B) orbicularis oculi muscle excision was performed on 54 healthy Caucasian patients. Tear film dynamics and dry eye symptoms were evaluated using multiple dry eye parameters, i.e. tear osmolarity, Schirmer test I, corneal/conjunctival staining, tear break-up time (TBUT), Oxford Scheme, Sicca Ocular Staining Score and Ocular Surface Disease Index questionnaire. All the parameters were assessed preoperatively and 6 and 12 months after upper blepharoplasty. All the groups' outcomes were compared.RESULTS: The differences were not significant between the two upper blepharoplasty techniques regarding most of the above-mentioned outcomes. Subjective symptoms of ocular irritation, consistent with dry eye disease and vision-related impairment, were reduced after upper blepharoplasty independent of the type of the technique applied, while the pre and postoperative outcomes of the objective tear dynamics did not differ 12 months after surgery. However, group B demonstrated a significant increase in tear osmolarity and TBUT at the 6-month follow-up visit.CONCLUSION: An upper blepharoplasty alleviates subjective dry eye complaints in the long term, while not changing the tear dynamics. The improvement was independent of the blepharoplasty technique used.

In this paper, we investigated the functional roles of alpha and theta oscillations on AB by determining how much preceding rhythmic auditory stimulation affected the performance of AB. Healthy young adults participated in the experiment online. We found that when two targets were embedded in rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) of distractors at 10 Hz (i.e., alpha frequency), the magnitude of AB increased with auditory stimuli. The increase was limited to the case when the frequency and phase of auditory stimuli matched the following RSVP stream. On the contrary, when only two targets were presented without distractors, auditory stimuli at theta, not alpha, increased the AB magnitude. These results indicate that neural oscillations at two different frequencies, namely, alpha and theta, are involved in attentional blink.

Oligodendrocytes (ODCs) are myelinating cells of the central nervous system (CNS) supporting neuronal survival. Oxidants and mitochondrial dysfunction have been suggested as the main causes of ODC damage during neuroinflammation as observed in multiple sclerosis (MS). Nonetheless, the dynamics of this process remain unclear, thus hindering the design of neuroprotective therapeutic strategies. To decipher the spatio-temporal pattern of oxidative damage and dysfunction of ODC mitochondria in vivo, we created a novel mouse model in which ODCs selectively express the ratiometric H2 O2 biosensor mito-roGFP2-Orp1 allowing for quantification of redox changes in their mitochondria. Using 2-photon imaging of the exposed spinal cord, we observed significant mitochondrial oxidation in ODCs upon induction of the MS model experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). This redox change became already apparent during the preclinical phase of EAE prior to CNS infiltration of inflammatory cells. Upon clinical EAE development, mitochondria oxidation remained detectable and was associated with a significant impairment in organelle density and morphology. These alterations correlated with the proximity of ODCs to inflammatory lesions containing activated microglia/macrophages. During the chronic progression of EAE, ODC mitochondria maintained an altered morphology, but their oxidant levels decreased to levels observed in healthy mice. Taken together, our study implicates oxidative stress in ODC mitochondria as a novel pre-clinical sign of MS-like inflammation and demonstrates that evolving redox and morphological changes in mitochondria accompany ODC dysfunction during neuroinflammation.

Previous research established that rhythmic sensory stimulation can affect subsequent stimulus perception, possibly through 'entrainment' of oscillations in the brain. Alpha frequency is a natural target for visual entrainment, because fluctuations in posterior alpha oscillations have been linked to visual target detection or discrimination. On the other hand, alpha oscillations also relate to attentional mechanisms, such as attentional orienting or selection. Previous visual alpha entrainment studies focused on differential processing of targets presented in-phase with the preceding rhythmic stimulation relative to out-of-phase targets (an 'SOA effect'), putatively related to the phase of entrained neuronal alpha oscillations. Fewer studies probed the consequences of rhythmic alpha stimulation for attention mechanisms related to alpha power. Here, we asked whether alpha stimulation of one hemifield has similar effects on reaction times as we see for increased alpha synchronization in magneto/electroencephalography (M/EEG) studies (i.e., more alpha means impaired processing and functional inhibition). We implemented a task inspired by attention studies, assessing reaction times to ipsilateral vs. contralateral visual targets, with and without concurrent presentation of distractors. Yet, in place of any attention cues, we presented a rhythmic, vs. arrhythmic, alpha-frequency train of visual flashes to one hemifield, in a large sample size (N = 115) in an online experiment. We found clear evidence that flash train rhythmicity did not impact task performance. We also found that the spatial congruence between the unilateral flash train and the subsequent visual target did impact response times but only in the presence of contralateral distractor stimuli. We discuss implications, limitations and future directions.

Background: Accessory mitral valve tissue (AMVT) is an extremely rare causes left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) obstruction and is usually incidentally detected in childhood. It is often associated with other cardiac and vascular congenital malformations. Case Presentation: In this case, we present a 15-year-old girl was diagnosed with AMVT by transesophageal echocardiography, resulting in LVOT obstruction during systole. Interestingly enough, the patient’s accessory mitral valve remained undetected for years until he became symptomatic for wide ASD. Successful closure of the ASD with resection of the AMVT was performed with a transaortic approach. The patient was hemodynamically stable postoperatively. There were no abnormalities in the mitral valves and LVOT. Conclusion: It was also unusual to see AMVT with ASD instead of other frequently associated other congenital anomalies. Accessory mitral valve should be considered a rare but important cause of left ventricular outflow tract obstruction in childhood.

Background Low vision affects over 300 million people worldwide and can compromise both activities of daily living and quality of life. Rehabilitative training and vision assistive equipment (VAE) may help, but some visually impaired people have limited resources to attend in-person visits at rehabilitation clinics. These people may be able to overcome barriers to care through remote, Internet-based consultation (i.e., telerehabilitation). Objectives To compare the effects of telerehabilitation with face-to-face (e.g., in-office or inpatient) vision rehabilitation services for improving vision-related quality of life and reading speed in people with visual function loss due to any ocular condition. Secondary objectives are to evaluate compliance with scheduled rehabilitation sessions, abandonment rates for visual assistive equipment devices, and patient satisfaction ratings. Search methods We searched CENTRAL (which contains the Cochrane Eyes and Vision Group Trials Register) (2015 Issue 5), Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid MEDLINE In-Process and Other Non-Indexed Citations, Ovid MEDLINE Daily, Ovid OLDMEDLINE (January 1980 to June 2015), EMBASE (January 1980 to June 2015), PubMed (1980 to June 2015), ClinicalTrials.gov (www.clinicaltrials.gov) and the World Health Organization (WHO) International Clinical Trials Registry Platform (ICTRP) (www.who.int/ictrp/search/en). We did not use any language restriction or study design filter in the electronic searches; however, we restricted the searches from 1980 onwards because the Internet was not introduced to the public until 1982. We last searched the electronic databases on 15 June 2015. Selection criteria We planned to include randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or controlled clinical trials (CCTs) in which participants were diagnosed with low vision and were undergoing low vision rehabilitation using an Internet, web-based technology compared with an approach based on in-person consultations. Data collection and analysis Two authors independently screened titles and abstracts, and then full-text articles against the eligibility criteria. We planned to have two authors independently abstract data from included studies. We resolved discrepancies by discussion. Main results We did not find any study that met the inclusion criteria for this review and, hence, we did not conduct a quantitative analysis. As a part of the background, we discussed review articles on telemedicine for facilitating communication with elderly individuals or for providing remote ophthalmological care. Authors' conclusions We did not find any evidence on whether the use of telerehabilitation is feasible or a potentially viable means to remotely deliver rehabilitation services to individuals with low vision. Given the disease burden and the growing interest in telemedicine, there is a need for future pilot studies and subsequent clinical trials to explore the potential for telerehabilitation as a platform for providing services to people with low vision.

Intraspecific colour polymorphisms (CPs) present unique opportunities to study fundamental evolutionary questions, such as the link between ecology and phenotype, mechanisms maintaining genetic diversity and their putative role in speciation. Wrasses are highly diverse in ecology and morphology and harbour a variety of colour-polymorphic species. In the Mediterranean Sea, wrasses of the tribe Labrini evolved two species radiations each harbouring several species with a brown and a green morph. The colour morphs occur in complete sympatry in mosaic habitats with rocky outcrops and Neptune grass patches. Morph-specific differences had not been characterized yet and the evolutionary forces maintaining them remained unknown. With genome-wide data for almost all Labrini species, we show that species with CPs are distributed across the phylogeny, but show evidence of hybridization. This suggests that the colour morphs are either ancient and have been lost repeatedly, that they have evolved repeatedly or have been shared via hybridization. Focusing on two polymorphic species, we find that each colour morph is more common in the microhabitat providing the best colour match and that the morphs exhibit additional behavioural and morphological differences further improving crypsis in their respective microhabitats. We find little evidence for genetic differentiation between the morphs in either species. Therefore, we propose that these colour morphs represent a multi-niche polymorphism as an adaptation to the highly heterogeneous habitat. Our study highlights how colour polymorphism (CP) can be advantageous in mosaic habitats and that Mediterranean wrasses are an ideal system to study trans-species polymorphisms, i.e. polymorphisms maintained across several species, in adaptive radiations.

The formation of spatial genetic structure with the presence of extensive gene flow, an evolutionary force which is generally expected to eliminate population-specific variation and maintain genetic homogeneity, remains poorly understood. Homosporous ferns, which spread by spores through wind and possess long distance dispersal capacity, provide an ideal system to investigate such a process. Here, using a homoploid fern lineage, the Athyrium sinense complex, we used reduced-representation genomic data to examine spatial genetic structure and explored potential driving forces including geographical distance, environment, climatic history and external dispersal constraints. Our findings showed a clear north-south divergence at the genetic, morphological and ecological levels between both sides of 35°N in East Asia. Fluctuant and heterogeneous climatic condition was demonstrated to play a crucial role during the formation of the divergence. Our results suggested that this lineage was able to migrate southward and colonize new habitat as a result of the Quaternary climatic fluctuation. Furthermore, the present genetic structure is attributed to adaptation to heterogeneous environments, especially temperature difference. In addition to ecological adaptation, we found clues showing that canopy density, wind direction as well as habitat continuity were all likely to constrain the effect of gene flow. These results demonstrated a diversification process without ploidy changes in ferns providing new insights for our present knowledge on ferns' spatio-temporal evolutionary pattern. In particular, our study highlights the influence of environmental heterogeneity in driving genetic divergence against strong dispersal capacity.

Social cues and instrumental learning are two aspects potentially fostering early gaze following. We systematically investigated the influence of social features (schematic eyes vs. reverse-contrast eyes) and gaze-contingent reinforcement (elicited vs. not elicited) on 4-month-olds' learning to attend to gaze-cued objects. In 4 experiments, we tested infants' (N = 74) gaze following of a turning block with schematic or reverse-contrast eyes. In Experiments 1 and 2, infants could elicit an attractive animation in a training phase via interactive eye tracking by following the turning of the block. Experiments 3 and 4 were yoked controls without contingent reinforcement. Infants did not spontaneously follow the motion of the block. Four-month-olds always followed the block after training when it featured schematic eyes. When the block featured reverse-contrast eyes, the training phase only affected infants' looking behavior without reinforcement. While speaking to a certain degree of plasticity, findings stress the importance of eyes for guiding infants' attention.

Ornamental coloration is frequently an honest signal of quality associated with sexual selection. While changes in average environmental conditions affect carotenoid- and melanin- based coloration, no evidence exists that changes in intrinsic environmental predictability affect coloration. Here we experimentally manipulated the intrinsic predictability of precipitation in semi-natural populations of common lizards Zootoca vivipara and tested its effect on ornamental coloration and reproduction of adult males. Less predictable precipitation decreased hue of carotenoid- based coloration and the extent of melanin- based coloration. Hue was positively correlated and the extent of melanin- based coloration was negatively correlated with the male's number of confirmed mate partners. Treatment effects on hue were associated with reduced, and treatment effects on the extent of melanin- based coloration with increased access to females, in line with differential effects on sexual selection. Neither survival nor reproductive success of adult males significantly differed among predictability treatments, suggesting that negative effects on reproduc-tion caused by changes in carotenoid- based coloration may have been compen-sated by changes in melanin- based coloration. The results also showed that ornamentation, rather than reproduction and survival of adult males, was affected by less favourable conditions. Inherited forms of cataract are a heterogeneous group of eye disorders known in livestock species. Clinicopathological analysis of a single case of impaired vision in a newborn Original Braunvieh calf revealed nuclear cataract. Whole-genome sequencing of the parent-offspring trio revealed a de novo mutation of ADAMTSL4 in this case. The heterozygous p.Arg776His missense variant affects a conserved residue of the ADAMTSL4 gene that encodes a secreted glycoprotein expressed in the lens throughout embryonic development. In humans, ADAMTSL4 genetic variants cause recessively inherited forms of subluxation of the lens. Given that ADAMTSL4 is a functional candidate gene for inherited disorders of the lens, we suggest that heterozygosity for the identified missense variant may have caused the congenital cataract in the affected calf. Cattle populations should be monitored for unexplained cataract cases, with subsequent DNA sequencing a hypothesized pathogenic effect of heterozygous ADAMTSL4 variants could be confirmed.

Anopheles fluviatilis James (Diptera: Culicidae) represents a complex that comprises four sibling species (S, T, U, and V). Among these, species T is widely distributed in India. Chromosomal inversion polymorphism exists among different geographic populations of An. fluviatilis species T; however, population genetic structure is not understood. This study inferred a genetic structure among six geographically diverse populations of species T using a panel of microsatellite markers. Analyses indicated a significant but low genetic differentiation among the majority of the studied populations. A significant correlation was observed between genetic and geographic distances, exhibiting stepwise migration patterns among populations.

Converging evidence shows that our visual system can track multiple visual, independently moving items over time. This is accomplished location-based by maintaining the individual spatial information of each target item or object-based by constructing an abstract object-based representation out of the tracked items. Previous work showed specific behavioural, electrophysiological and haemodynamic markers for location-based or object-based representations of the relevant targets by probing the encoded information subsequently after tracking. However, domain-specific differences of representational correlates during visual tracking itself have not been reported yet. The current study aims to identify spectral properties of the electrophysiological signal during tracking that might indicate location-based versus object-based maintenance of visual information. Subjects had to covertly track four out of eight visually identical items for several seconds while electrophysiological signals were recorded. Subsequently, a probe consisting of four items appeared and the subjects had to indicate with a button press whether the probe matched all targets or not. Subjects employing an object-based strategy showed an enhanced gamma response during the presentation of the target items at the beginning of the trial. On the other hand, subjects using a location-based strategy showed enhanced gamma synchronization throughout the tracking itself. Both the object- and location-based gamma responses yielded identical spatial topographical field distributions. These results indicate that object-based tracking is supported by enhanced encoding during the initial presentation of the targets to be tracked. Location-based tracking is characterized by the sustained maintenance of the individual targets during the entire tracking period in that same processing network.

Background and Aim: The study was undertaken in order to compare single injection indocyanine green (ICG)-clearances with the steady-state ICG-clearance (ICGCl) in patients with cirrhosis in order to assess the most accurate estimate for ICG-clearance and to relate the ICG-clearances to established indicators of liver dysfunction. Methods: Thirty-eight patients (male 29) with cirrhosis (Child–Turcotte class A 8, class B 21, and class C 9) were studied during a hemodynamic investigation. A single injection of ICG was followed by blood samples for 5, 10, 15, and 20 min. The dose/plasma area clearance (ClA) and plasma volume · initial slope clearance (ClPV) were determined and compared with the steady-state infusion/plasma concentration ratio clearance (ICGCl). Results: The ClA (310; 214; 502 mL/min) and ClPV (294; 164; 481 mL/min) correlated closely with ICGCl (243; 120; 383 mL/min [median; interquartile range], R = 0.95–0.98, P Cl (P A and ClPV) of the steady-state ICG-clearance as derived from the ICG-retention curve and the plasma volume correlate with ICGCl and established variables of portal hypertension and liver cell bile excretory dysfunction. Therefore, these markers can safely replace the more costly ICGCl.

Aims Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is highly effective in dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) patients with impaired left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and left bundle block branch. In cardiac amyloidosis (CA) patients, left ventricular dysfunction and conduction defects are common, but the potential of CRT to improve cardiac remodelling and survival in this particular setting remains undefined. We investigated cardiovascular outcomes in CA patients after CRT implantation in terms of CRT echocardiographic response and major cardiovascular events (MACEs). Methods and results Our retrospective study included 47 CA patients implanted with CRT devices from January 2012 to February 2020, in nine French university hospitals (77 ± 6 years old, baseline LVEF 30 ± 8%) compared with propensity‐matched (1:1 for age, LVEF at implantation, and CRT indication) DCM patients with a CRT device. CA patients had lower rates of CRT response (absolute delta LVEF ≥ 10%) compared with DCM patients (36% vs. 70%, P = 0.002). OBJECTIVE To examine the changes in ophthalmic artery Doppler indices and their association with changes in mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) and systolic and diastolic blood pressure in women with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, presenting with high blood pressure and receiving antihypertensive medication. METHODS Prospective cohort study of 31 pregnant women with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy receiving antihypertensive medication at 30+0 to 39+6 weeks' gestation. Paired maternal blood pressure and ophthalmic artery Doppler measurements were performed prior to and at 30 and 60 minutes after starting antihypertensive medication. In some patients who did not achieve blood pressure control at 60 minutes, paired readings were continued up to the point of blood pressure control. Patients who failed to do so within 2 hours from commencement of antihypertensives were admitted to hospital. Purpose: Outdoor light exposure is considered a safe and effective strategy to reduce myopia development and aligns with existing public health initiatives to promote healthier lifestyles in children. However, it is unclear whether this strategy reduces myopia progression in eyes that are already myopic. This study aims to conduct an overview of systematic reviews (SRs) reporting time spent outdoors as a strategy to prevent myopia or slow its progression in children.\ud \ud Methods: We searched the Cochrane Library, EMBASE, MEDLINE and CINAHL from inception to 1 November 2020 to identify SRs that evaluated the association between outdoor light exposure and myopia development or progression in children. Outcomes included incident myopia, prevalent myopia and change in spherical equivalent refractive error (SER) and axial length (AL) to evaluate annual rates of myopia progression. The methodological quality and risk of bias of included SRs were assessed using the AMSTAR-2\ud and ROBIS tools, respectively.\ud \ud Results: Seven SRs were identified, which included data from 47 primary studies with 63,920 participants. Pooled estimates (risk or odds ratios) consistently demonstrated that time outdoors was associated with a reduction in prevalence and incidence of myopia. In terms of slowing progression in eyes that were already myopic, the reported annual reductions in SER and AL from baseline were small (0.13–0.17 D) and regarded as clinically insignificant. Methodological quality assessment using AMSTAR-2 found that all reviews had one or more critical flaws and the ROBIS tool identified a low risk of bias in only two of the included SRs.\ud \ud Conclusion: This overview found that increased exposure to outdoor light reduces myopia development. However, based on annual change in SER and AL, there is insufficient evidence for a clinically significant effect on myopia progression. The poor methodological quality and inconsistent reporting of the included systematic reviews reduce confidence in the estimates of effect.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES This study aimed to investigate the association between pain perception and catastrophizing at the beginning of orthodontic treatment; and the association between pain during orthodontic treatment and demographic, clinical, and other psychological factors. METHODS A cohort study with 44 patients (28.9±15.05 years old; 25 females and 19 males) under orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances had their pain perception evaluated through a visual analog scale at baseline (before activation), 6 h, 24 h, 2nd day, 3rd day, 5th day, and 7th day after activation. The scores at each evaluation period after the first (T1), second (T2), and third (T3) appointments were compared by analysis of variance. Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapy is used to slow the disease progression of neovascular age-related macular degeneration. Due to the treatment burden of frequent intravitreal injections, anti-VEGFs are often used on treat and extend protocols rather than the labeled frequency. The current goal of anti-VEGF drug development is to minimize treatment burden by reducing the number of intravitreal injections. The purpose of this systemic review and model-based meta-analysis (MBMA) was to (1) perform modeling to describe the disease progression of neovascular age-related macular degeneration in the absence of treatment, as well as in the presence of abicipar, aflibercept, brolucizumab, or ranibizumab intervention; (2) and to simulate virtual head-to-head comparisons among the drugs with an extended dose schedule of once every 12 weeks (Q12). Data sources were PubMed, internal Allergan data, www.clinicaltrials.gov, and www.clinicaltrialsregister.eu. Eligibility assessment was performed by 2 independent review authors. Randomized, controlled trials that had at least 1 arm with an anti-VEGF (aflibercept, abicipar, bevacizumab, brolucizumab, pegaptanib, or ranibizumab), a control arm of placebo or anti-VEGF, a treatment duration of at least 4 months, reported best-corrected visual acuity data, and at least 20 patients were included. A total of 22 trials, consisting of 55 arms, from across 9500+ subjects and 500+ best-corrected visual acuity observations were used to develop the model. Consistent with reported data, results from the model showed that abicipar Q12 underperformed ranibizumab (every 4 weeks), aflibercept (every 4 weeks), and brolucizumab (every 8 weeks/Q12) labeled dosing schedules. However, when all drugs were virtually tested using the extended schedule, abicipar outperformed ranibizumab and aflibercept and produced a similar week 52 change from baseline as brolucizumab. Predicted week 52 changes from baseline were 5.92 ± 1.02, 3.04 ± 1.61, 6.61 ± 0.284, and 3.02 ± 2.35 best-corrected visual acuity letters for abicipar, aflibercept, brolucizumab, and ranibizumab, respectively, using the Q12 schedule. Results demonstrate the feasibility of Q12 dosing with clinically meaningful letter gains for abicipar and brolucizumab. The model developed under this MBMA has utility for exploring different regimens for existing or novel anti-VEGF agents.

To determine the effect of low-intensity, long-wavelength red light therapy (LLRT) on the inhibition of myopia progression in children.A retrospective study was conducted. One hundred and five myopic children (spherical equivalent refractive error [SER] -3.09 ± 1.74 dioptres [D]; mean age, 9.19 ± 2.40 years) who underwent LLRT treatment (power 0.4 mW, wavelength 635 nm) twice per day for 3 min each session, with at least a 4-h interval between sessions, and a control group of 56 myopic children (SER -3.04 ± 1.66 D; mean age, 8.62 ± 2.45 years) were evaluated. Both groups wore single-vision distance spectacles. Each child returned for a follow-up examination every 3 months after the initial measurements for a total of 9 months.At 9 months, the mean SER in the LLRT group was -2.87 ± 1.89 D, significantly greater than that of the control group (-3.57 ± 1.49 D, p 0.001). Axial length (AL) changes were -0.06 ± 0.19 mm and 0.26 ± 0.15 mm in the LLRT group and control group (p 0.001), respectively. The subfoveal choroidal thickness changed by 45.32 ± 30.88 μm for children treated with LLRT at the 9-month examination (p 0.001). Specifically, a substantial hyperopic shift (0.31 ± 0.24 D and 0.20 ± 0.14 D, respectively, p = 0.02) was found in the 8-14 year olds compared with 4-7 year old children. The decrease in AL in subjects with baseline AL24 mm was -0.08 ± 0.19 mm, significantly greater than those with a baseline AL ≤24 mm (-0.04 ± 0.18 mm, p = 0.03).Repetitive exposure to LLRT therapy was associated with slower myopia progression and reduced axial growth after short durations of treatment. These results require further validation in randomised controlled trials.

Background This post hoc analysis compared the efficacy and safety of CLS-TA to other commonly available treatments for noninfectious uveitis (NIU). Methods Results from the PEACHTREE study were compared between subjects randomized to CLS-TA not requiring rescue therapy and those subjects randomized to control and subsequently requiring rescue therapy. Endpoints included best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central subfield thickness (CST), treatment emergent adverse events (TEAEs), and intraocular pressure (IOP) related safety findings. Results In this analysis, there were 83 unrescued CLS-TA subjects and 46 rescued control subjects. At Week 24, 51.9% of the unrescued CLS-TA subjects gained ≥15 letters in BCVA, compared to 37.0% of the rescued control subjects (P = 0.115). Unrescued CLS-TA subjects showed a mean gain of 15.7 versus 10.9 letters in rescued control subjects (P = 0.080). A significantly greater mean reduction in CST was observed for unrescued CLS-TA subjects versus rescued control subjects (174.0 and 148.5 μm; P = 0.040). Of unrescued CLS-TA subjects, 4.9% experienced IOP elevations ≥ 30 mm Hg at any visit versus 10.9% of rescued control subjects. Further, use of IOP-lowering medications appeared lower in unrescued CLS-TA subjects versus rescued control subjects (7.2% versus 13.0%). There were no IOP-related surgical interventions in either group. Conclusion CLS-TA subjects experienced significantly greater reduction in CST and tended towards greater improvement in BCVA, compared with rescued control subjects. PURPOSE To evaluate the effectiveness of the visual habilitation program in improving the visual functions of visually impaired children under 3 years old. METHODS Case records of children with visual impairment (VI) who had at least 1 follow-up visit, were reviewed. Children's visual functions were scored between 0 and 15 based on mainly fixation and following skills. Differences in patients' visual function score (VFS) between the time of the presentation and the last follow-up visit were recorded. RESULTS 130 children with VI (63 male and 67 female) were identified. The mean age at the presentation was 13.94±9.23 months and the mean follow-up was 12.79±9.4 months. Forty of the patients had ocular, 70 of them had cerebral and 20 of them had combined VI. Correlations were found between the age of the patients at the presentation and the initial VFS; and gestational age and the initial VFS (p˂0.001, r=0.332; p˂0.05, r=0.262, respectively). Vision improvement was noted in ocular, cerebral, and combined VI groups. No significant difference among the groups was found (p=0.430). There was a significant difference between the change in the VFSs of those who attended the special education and rehabilitation center regularly for 2 hours a week and had regular visual stimulation for 8-10 sessions every day at home and those who did not go to the center and did not receive any visual stimulation by their parents at home (p˂0.001). CONCLUSIONS The visual functions of visually impaired children can be improved by habilitation, which includes visual stimulation programs.

The human visual system has evolved specialized neural mechanisms to rapidly detect faces. Its broad tuning for facial features is thought to underlie the illusory perception of faces in inanimate objects, a phenomenon called face pareidolia. Recent studies on face pareidolia suggest that the mechanisms underlying face processing, at least at the early stages of visual encoding, may treat objects that resemble faces as real faces; prioritizing their detection. In our study, we used breaking continuous flash suppression (b-CFS) to examine whether the human visual system prioritizes the detection of objects that induce face pareidolia over stimuli matched for object content. Similar to previous b-CFS results using real face stimuli, we found that participants detected the objects with pareidolia faces faster than object-matched control stimuli. Given that face pareidolia has been more frequently reported amongst individuals prone to hallucinations, we also explored whether this rapid prioritization is intact in individuals with schizophrenia, and found evidence suggesting that it was. Our findings suggest that face pareidolia engages a broadly tuned mechanism that facilitates rapid face detection. This may involve the proposed fast subcortical pathway that operates outside of visual awareness.

The present study investigated the diversity and genetic structure of Escherichia coli isolates from 100 septic tanks in the Canberra region, Australia. The physicochemical characteristics of the septic tanks were determined to examine the extent to which environmental factors might influence E. coli prevalence, diversity and population structure. The results of this study indicated that the temperature of the septic tank could explain some of the variation observed in the number of E. coli isolates recovered per septic tank, whereas pH was an important driver of E. coli diversity. Conductivity, pH and household size had a significant impact on E. coli population structure, and household size significantly affected the probability of detecting human-associated E. coli lineages [sequence types (STs) 69, 73, 95 and 131] in septic tanks. Phylogroup A and B1 strains were not randomly distributed among septic tanks, and the strong negative association between them may indicate intraspecific competition. The findings of this study suggest that the combination of environmental factors and intraspecific interactions may influence the distribution and genetic structure of E. coli in the environment.

Obtaining a parts list of the sensory components of the retina is vital to understanding the effects of light in behavior, health, and disease. Rods, cones, and intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) are the best described photoreceptors in the mammalian retina, but recent functional roles have been proposed for retinal neuropsin (Opn5) - an atypical opsin. However, little is known about the pattern of Opn5 expression in the retina. Using cre (Opn5cre ) and cre-dependent reporters, we uncover patterns of Opn5 expression and find that Opn5 is restricted to retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). Opn5-RGCs are non-homogenously distributed through the retina, with greater densities of cells located in the dorsotemporal quadrant. In addition to local topology of these cells, using cre-dependent AAV viral tracing, we surveyed their central targets and found that they are biased towards image-forming and image-stabilizing regions. Finally, molecular and electrophysiological profiling reveal that Opn5-RGCs comprise previously defined RGC types which respond optimally to edges and object-motion (F-mini-ONs, HD2, HD1, LEDs, ooDSRGCs, etc.). Together, these data describe the second collection of RGCs that express atypical opsins in the mouse, and expand the roles of image-forming cells in retinal physiology and function. Attentional models of time perception assume that the perceived duration of a stimulus depends on the extent to which attentional resources are allocated to its temporal information. Here, we studied the effects of auditory distraction on time perception, using a combined attentional-distraction duration-discrimination paradigm. Participants were confronted with a random sequence of long and short tone stimuli, most of which having a uniform (standard) pitch and only a few a different (deviant) pitch. As observed in previous studies, pitch-deviant tones impaired the discrimination of tone duration and triggered a sequence of event-related potentials (ERPs) reflecting a cycle of deviance detection, involuntary attentional distraction, and reorientation (MMN, P3a, RON). Contrasting ERPs of short and long tone durations revealed that long tones elicited a more pronounced fronto-central contingent negative variation (CNV) in the time interval after the expected offset of the short tone as well as a more prominent centro-parietal late positive complex (LPC). Relative to standard-pitch tones, deviant-pitch tones especially impaired the correct discrimination of long tones, which was associated with a reduction of the CNV and LPC. These results are interpreted within the theoretical framework of resource-based models of time perception, in which involuntary distraction due to a deviant event led to a withdrawal of attentional resources from the processing of time information.

Obesity, insulin resistance, and metabolic alterations increase the risk of colorectal cancer and adenoma (CRA). Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) or pancreatic disease (NAFPD) shares many risk factors with CRA that may have significant roles in its development; however, the relationship between CRA and NAFLD/NAFPD remains unclear.This cross-sectional study recruited 712 eligible participants without current drinking who had undergone total colonoscopy as part of a health checkup. These participants were classified into a CRA group (n = 236) and a control group (n = 439), which consisted of individuals without CRA and a history of polyp resection. NAFLD and NAFPD were diagnosed based on abdominal ultrasonography findings.Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease was observed more frequently in individuals with CRA than in the control group (55.9% vs 41.6%, P 0.01). There was no significant association between NAFPD and CRA; however, serum pancreatic amylase (P-amylase) levels were significantly lower in individuals with CRA. Although NAFLD was one of the factors increasing the presence of CRA (odds ratio [OR], 1.50; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.07-2.10), low P-amylase levels were significantly associated with the presence of CRA (OR, 1.73; 95% CI, 1.04-2.88) independent of age, sex, current smoking, obesity, metabolic alterations including insulin resistance, and NAFLD.Low serum P-amylase levels were a possible independent risk factor for CRA in the present study. The latent pancreatic exocrine-endocrine-gut relationship was considered a novel pathway involved in obesity-related CRA development, in non-alcoholic individuals.

International audience; Several physical features influence the perception of how cooperative a potential partner is. While previous work focused on face and voice, it remains unknown whether body odours influence judgements of cooperativeness and if odour-based judgements are accurate. Here, we first collected axillary odours of cooperative and uncooperative male donors through a public good game and used them as olfactory stimuli in a series of tasks examining whether and how they influence cooperative decision-making in an incentivized economic game and ratings of cooperativeness. Our results show that having access to the donor's body odours provided a strategic advantage to women during economic decisions (but not to men): with age, women were more likely to cooperate with cooperative men and to avoid interacting with uncooperative men. Ratings of cooperativeness were nonetheless unrelated to the donors’ actual cooperativeness. Finally, while men with masculine and intense body odours were judged less cooperative, we found no evidence that donors’ actual cooperativeness was associated with less masculine or less intense body odour. Overall, our findings suggest that, as faces and voices, body odours influence perceived cooperativeness and might be used accurately and in a non-aware manner as olfactory cues of cooperativeness, at least by women.

PURPOSE: To describe a case of monocular retinopathy of prematurity (ROP)-like vasculopathy without oxygen supplementation in the dog. METHODS: Fundus photographs (RetCam), spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (sdOCT), confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (cSLO), and fluorescein angiography (FA), as well as postmortem histology and immunohistochemistry (Collagen IV and anti-vWF antibodies), were carried out to characterize the vascular abnormalities. RESULTS: Ophthalmic examination showed peripheral and mid-temporal avascular areas in the tapetal region, neovascularization and abnormally dilated and tortuous retinal vessels in the left eye. sdOCT demonstrated not only cross-sectional views of preretinal fibrovascular proliferation but also extensive proliferation extraretinally into the vitreous. FA emphasized demarcation of vascular and avascular zones with neovascular tufts “popcorns.” Histology and immunohistochemistry confirmed presence of abnormally dilated vessels and the intravitreal blood vessels. CONCLUSIONS: ROP is a disease of abnormally developed retinal vascularization associated with oxygen supplementation therapy, potentially causing blindness in premature infants. Although the mechanism of ROP-like vasculopathy in our case is unclear, it is important to appreciate that the abnormal vascular pattern seen in ROP in premature infants can occur in canines without oxygen administration.

Phenotypic adaptation in terms of background color matching to the local habitat is an important mechanism for survival in prey species. Thus, intraspecific variation in cryptic coloration is expected among localities with dissimilar habitat features (e.g., soil, vegetation). Yellow‐bellied toads (Bombina variegata) display a dark dorsal coloration that varies between populations, assumed to convey crypsis. In this study, we explored I) geographic variation in dorsal coloration and II) coloration plasticity in B. variegata from three localities differing in substrate coloration. Using avian visual modeling, we found that the brightness contrasts of the cryptic dorsa were significantly lower on the local substrates than substrates of other localities. In experiments, individuals from one population were able to quickly change the dorsal coloration to match a lighter substrate. We conclude that the environment mediates an adaptation in cryptic dorsal coloration. We suggest further studies to test the mechanisms by which the color change occurs and explore the adaptive potential of coloration plasticity on substrates of varying brightness in B. variegata and other species.

The cornea is an avascular, transparent tissue that is essential for visual function. Any disturbance to the corneal transparency will result in a severe vision loss. Due to the avascular nature, the cornea acquires most of the oxygen supply directly or indirectly from the atmosphere. Corneal tissue hypoxia has been noticed to influence the structure and function of the cornea for decades. The etiology of hypoxia of the cornea is distinct from the rest of the body, mainly due to the separation of cornea from the atmosphere, such as prolonged contact lens wearing or closed eyes. Corneal hypoxia can also be found in corneal inflammation and injury when a higher oxygen requirement exceeds the oxygen supply. Systemic hypoxic state during lung diseases or high altitude also leads to corneal hypoxia when a second oxygen consumption route from aqueous humor gets blocked. Hypoxia affects the cornea in multiple aspects, including disturbance of the epithelium barrier function, corneal edema due to endothelial dysfunction and metabolism changes in the stroma, and thinning of corneal stroma. Cornea has also evolved mechanisms to adapt to the hypoxic state initiated by the activation of hypoxia inducible factor (HIF). The aim of this review is to introduce the pathology of cornea under hypoxia and the mechanism of hypoxia adaptation, to discuss the current animal models used in this field, and future research directions., The effect of hypoxia on each corneal cell types and the adaptation to hypoxia by the activation of hypoxia inducible factor (HIF) signalling pathway

Down syndrome-associated arthritis (DA) is underrecognized, and current therapies used for juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) appear to be poorly tolerated and less effective in patients with DA. The objective of this study was to characterize clinical manifestations and therapeutic preferences in DA compared to JIA, using the new Childhood Arthritis and Rheumatology Research Alliance (nCARRA) registry.In a case-control study, between July 2015 and March 2019, patients with a diagnosis of JIA and Down syndrome (DS) were identified and matched by age, sex, and JIA subtype to patients who have JIA without DS. Collected data included demographic characteristics, disease characteristics, laboratory results, treatment exposure, and outcome measures.A total of 36 children with DA and 165 with JIA were identified. Most patients presented with polyarticular rheumatoid factor-negative disease. At entry into the nCARRA registry, there were minimal differences between the groups, and at the last visit there were significant differences (P0.05) for multiple outcome measures. Patients with DA and those with JIA had similar therapeutic exposure to disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) and biologics, but those with DA had more DMARD-related adverse events (93% versus 25%) and biologic therapy ineffectiveness (60% versus 17%).There was little difference between patients with DA and those with JIA at baseline, and similar therapy was implemented for those in the nCARRA registry; however, at the last visit, the patients with DA had greater disease burden. Additionally, there were more DMARD-related adverse events and biologic ineffectiveness for those patients with DA. More research is needed to determine differences in pathophysiology and optimal therapeutic approaches.

Objective: To systematically review research into the use of humour‐based health promotion strategies for addressing public health issues during the past 10 years. Method: The systematic review was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Results: Thirteen studies were included in the review. Mental health, breast and testicular cancer self‐examination, safe sex, skin cancer and binge drinking public health issues were targeted. Humour‐based strategies were used to influence health attitudes and behaviours, encourage interpersonal sharing to indirectly affect health behaviour, and investigate the level of threat and humour associated with positive outcomes. Findings provided some evidence to support the use of humour‐based strategies as determined by the right combination of audience characteristics, level of humour and amusement evoked, and message persuasion and behaviour change methods underpinning strategies. Conclusion: Methodologies varied limiting comparability, although overall results indicate that humour‐based health promotion strategies may be a useful tool for increasing awareness and help‐seeking behaviour for public health priorities, particularly those associated with stigma. Implications for public health: Humour interventions vary widely because there can never be a standardised approach to evoking humour. Further research examining humour and public health promotion is needed.

Concurrent chemoradiation therapy (CRT) is the standard of care for patients with unresectable stage II/III lung cancer. However, systemic chemotherapy is required for patients who are ineligible for radical radiation therapy. There is little evidence to date for the safety and efficacy of CRT administered after treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). The cases reported here had inoperable stage III lung cancer (non‐small cell lung cancer and small cell lung cancer) and were ineligible for radical radiation therapy. They were administered ICIs plus chemotherapy and subsequently underwent late concurrent CRT. Because of the remarkable tumor shrinkage achieved by the ICIs plus chemotherapy, adverse events of CRT were tolerable. They were alive without tumor progression as of this report, over 1 year after CRT was terminated. CRT is administered with curative intent, while the intent of immunochemotherapy is palliative. Late concurrent CRT after immunochemotherapy is probably effective and tolerable. After treatment with systemic chemotherapy in patients judged ineligible for radical radiation therapy, radiation therapy should be reconsidered because of its importance once tumor shrinkage has been achieved., Late concurrent chemoradiation therapy following systemic therapy (immunotherapy or immunochemotherapy) should be considered as an important treatment option for patients initially judged ineligible for definitive chemoradiation therapy.

PURPOSE: To evaluate visual photosensitivity threshold and objective photosensitivity luminance in healthy eyes, thereby providing a normative dataset that will lead to a better understanding of diseases causing photophobia. METHODS: It was a prospective cross-sectional study. Emmetropes whose visual acuity was better than 0.18 logMAR (6/9) with no other ocular abnormality were included. Headache Impact Test-6 questionnaire and visual light sensitivity questionnaire were administered. Visual photosensitivity threshold was measured subjectively using ocular photosensitivity analyzer. Objective photosensitivity luminance was assessed manually by evaluating the videos recorded using infrared camera and noting down the intensity of light at the first squeezing reflex. RESULTS: A total of 75 normal subjects (age range, 7–71 years) were included. Median age was 32.7 years (inter-quartile range, 20.3–47.9 years). Forty subjects (53.3%) were males. Median Headache Impact Test score was 38 (inter-quartile range, 36–42) and visual light sensitivity questionnaire score was 11 (inter-quartile range, 8–15). Mean (standard deviation) right eye, left eye and binocular visual photosensitivity threshold was 3.34 (0.78), 3.33 (0.81) and 3.37 (0.78) loglux respectively. There was a significant negative correlation of visual light sensitivity questionnaire scores with right eye, left eye and binocular visual photosensitivity thresholds, and positive correlation of age with binocular visual photosensitivity thresholds. Mean (standard deviation) right eye, left eye and binocular objective photosensitivity luminance was 3.25 (0.55), 3.35 (0.47) and 3.15 (0.52) loglux respectively. Age was positively correlated with only binocular objective photosensitivity luminance and there was no correlation between age and right eye or left eye objective photosensitivity luminance. CONCLUSIONS: The study characterized, for the first time, objective photosensitivity luminance and established a normative data for both visual photosensitivity threshold and objective photosensitivity luminance. The data would help in understanding the pathophysiology of the diseases causing photophobia, monitoring the disease progression and thereby evaluating the treatment modalities.

OBJECTIVE The objective was to provide a comprehensive overview of color interactions between resin composite (RC) and its surroundings, analyze the design and results of respective research studies, and provide clinical and research recommendations. OVERVIEW Resin composite (RC) materials can adjust their color to that of surrounding enamel and dentin to a different extent. This phenomenon has been referred to as the "chameleon effect" in dental jargon, while color blending/adjustment/shifting/assimilation is more scientific terms. Studies that evaluated the color adjustment potential of RCs have employed different methods. This article discusses the (a) terminology used to describe color adjustment potential, (b) color science theories associated with color adjustment, (c) design of respective studies, including methods, specimens, and calculations, and (d) their outcome and reported results. Clinical implications and future directions related to the color adjustment potential of RCs are also provided. CONCLUSIONS Factors that influence the color adjustment potential of RCs are classified into three categories: (1) material type, (2) cavity design, and (3) the substrate surrounding the restoration. Each factor can be optimized to enhance color matching and the restorative outcome. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE A material that blends well and exhibits pronounced color adjustment potential would likely improve the color match and therefore the esthetic outcome. These materials "work" for dental professionals by compensating for their suboptimal shade matching and/or lack of an excellent match in the used material. This review aims to further the understanding of the inherent properties of RCs and allow clinicians to fully utilize them to place RC restorations and minimize the time spent on modifying or replacing existing ones. Hence, the outcomes would encompass the increased chairside efficiency, enhanced esthetic outcome, and patient satisfaction.

AIM To investigate whether pattern reversal visual evoked potentials (PRVEPs) could predict future visual acuity in infants with cerebral visual impairment (CVI). METHOD Fifty-five children (27 males, 28 females) with severe CVI seen in the ophthalmology department of a specialist children's hospital were identified retrospectively. Behavioural visual acuity and visual evoked potentials (VEPs) at presentation (time 1, T1) were compared with final visual acuity at late preschool/early school age (time 2, T2). Predictors of visual acuity at T2 were identified using univariate and multivariate logistic and linear regression analysis. RESULTS Median age was 14 months at T1 (range: 6-44mo) and 63 months at T2 (range: 29-150mo). The presence of a PRVEP produced by a check width of 50' (minutes of arc) or smaller (T1) predicted (p=0.05) the presence of measurable preferential looking acuity at T2. The presence of PRVEP to check widths of 25' or smaller (T1) predicted (p=0.02) better preferential looking acuity (logMAR-equivalent) scores at T2. The latter association was independent of presenting acuity at T1. INTERPRETATION The presence of PRVEPs to check widths of 50' and 25' in infancy provided useful information. VEPs in young children with CVI may have prognostic value regarding future acuity.

Thiamine-responsive megaloblastic anemia syndrome (TRMA) is an autosomal recessive disorder, inherited by the defective SLC19A2 gene that encodes a high-affinity thiamine transporter (THTR-1). TRMA is characterized by the occurrence of classical triad manifestations including megaloblastic anemia, diabetes mellitus, and sensorineural deafness. In addition to the systemic manifestations, ophthalmic features can be present and include retinitis pigmentosa, optic atrophy, cone-rod dystrophy, maculopathy, and Leber congenital amaurosis. Here we report a 6-year-old boy presenting severe early-onset retinal dystrophy with the initial diagnosis of Leber congenital amaurosis, which followed for 12 years. Diabetes mellitus occurred 3 years after vision problem. Eosinophilic granuloma of the left scapula was confirmed at 13 years old. Whole-exome sequencing was performed to identify two novel compound heterozygous variants c.725dupC (p.Ala243Serfs*3) and c.121G>A (p.Gly41Ser) in SLC19A2 gene (NM_006996.3). Oral thiamine supplementation treatment was initiated at 13 years. This case demonstrates Leber congenital amaurosis can present as the first clinical feature before systemic manifestations. Phenotypic variety should be aware and multidisciplinary teamwork and regular follow-up are important for TRMA patient care.

Objective The aim of this retrospective study was to review the clinical data and outcomes of patients that suffered ectopic cilium (EC). Animals studied One hundred and twelve dogs from multiple private practices in France, with a clinical diagnosis of EC were included in the study. Results The mean age of affected dogs was 2.3 years. There were 64 females and 48 males. The most represented breeds were the Shi Tzu, the French Bulldog, the English Bulldog and the Chihuahua. Eleven dogs were affected bilaterally. The upper eyelid was implicated in 93.5% of the cases, with the median portion being the most affected. No statistical difference was observed between the right and the left eye. EC were associated with distichiasis in 50% of the cases. Pigmentation of the conjunctiva at the point of exit of the EC was present in 58% of the cases. EC were short in 75% and long in 25% of the cases. Corneal complications were statistically associated with short EC. The corneal lesions associated with EC were keratitis (94%), corneal granuloma (0.8%), corneal fibrosis (2.7%), corneal degeneration (0.8%), superficial corneal ulcer (68.7%), deep corneal ulcer (8%) and perforating corneal ulcer (0.8%). The surgeries which consisted of the removal of the hair follicle was successful in 88.4% of the cases. Conclusion EC is a rare condition which can be treated successfully by the removal of the hair follicles. It must be suspected in cases of corneal lesions unresponsive to medical treatment.

Bradypus variegatus, popularly known as common sloth or brown-throated sloth, is a species with wide geographical distribution in Brazil. Expand on the literature about the species, we aimed to describe the morphology of its eye and its main annexes. For this study, six frozen specimens donated to the Animal Morphological Research Laboratory of the Federal Rural University of Amazonia were used. The specimens were fixed in a 10% aqueous solution of formaldehyde. The structures that constitute the ocular apparatus were identified and described after dissection and histological analysis using light microscopy. The bulbar conjunctiva presented a stratified cuboidal epithelium, with a considerable number of serous glands. The stroma layer and the posterior limiting lamina were found well defined in the species. The corneoscleral meshwork possessed a large opening for drainage of aqueous humour, followed by a wide retinal region, in which a layer of photoreceptors was visualized. Cones and rods could not be discriminated from each other. Microscopy of the medial angle of the eye revealed the cartilage and glands of the third eyelid, and a well-developed lacrimal gland structure. Bradypus variegatus distinguishing features and similarities in comparison with other domestic and wild mammal and bird species already described were investigated, which expounded the limited knowledge that is presently available on the morphology of wild fauna. The data extend the limited knowledge that are presently available on the ocular histology of B. variegatus.

Visual search skills develop substantially during the primary school years, and in parallel with children's reading achievement. Reading requires an efficient visual search and exposure to reading from the left to the right could also influence the way we explore space. No study, however, made links between visual search strategies and reading ability. In this study, 70 primary school children performed a cancellation task (Bells test) and reading tests. Our results showed that reading was closely linked to visual search accuracy but also to visual search organization, even after controlling for age for some measures. Along with the development of reading abilities, children made fewer revisitation, moved more to the nearest unmarked targets than to the farthest ones and explored more in lines. It appears, therefore, essential to take more into account the visual search organization of children with reading impairments such as dyslexia.

Objective The purpose of this study was to determine the effects and potential side effects of topical preservative-free (PF) tafluprost 0.0015% in ophthalmologically normal horses. Animals Five adult grade horses. Procedures One of the eyes of each horse was randomly chosen as the "treatment" eye, and consequently, the contralateral eye served as the "control." A single dose of PF tafluprost 0.0015% (0.2 mL) was instilled in the treated eye of each horse. Intraocular pressure (IOP), Schirmer's tear test (STT) levels of each eye, and an ophthalmic examination were performed at T0 (baseline), T30, T120, T24 h, and T48 h. Results The mean IOP values of the treated eyes at baseline (T0), T30, T120, T24 h, and T48 h were 25.4 ± 4.8 mmHg, 21.2 ± 1.92 mmHg, 15.20 ± 2.48 mmHg, 18.40 ± 1.51 mmHg, and 24.60 ± 1.94 mmHg, respectively. Significant differences were observed between the mean baseline IOP level and the T120 and T24 h time points (p = .001 and p = .009). The mean STT levels at each time point showed insignificant fluctuations during the study (p = .140). Adverse effects such as chemosis and episcleral injection were observed 30 min after the instillation of tafluprost 0.0015% (T30). Blepharospasm and conjunctival hyperemia were observed 120 min (T120) after the administration of the medication. Conclusion and clinical relevance Tafluprost 0.0015% showed potential in reducing IOP, but due to its local side effects, it is not a good candidate for management of glaucoma in horses. Tafluprost did not notably affect STT.

Background Studies on the anti-wrinkle effects of retinol have been widely reported, but there are few reports on the infraorbital dark circles reducing effects. Objective To evaluate the efficiency and tolerance of one novel formulation containing supramolecular retinol plus acmella oleracea extract in Chinese urban eye skin. Methods Thirty-three women with dark circles and visible fine wrinkles around the eyes, aged 20-45 years, were enrolled and instructed to use the formula for 6 weeks. Instrumental measures and subject assessment were obtained at baseline and at 3-week intervals. Results After 6 weeks, Mexameter MX18 results demonstrated a statistically significant 13.8% decrease in MI (melanin index) value, and Colorimeter CL400 results demonstrated a statistically significant 0.5% increase in L* (lightness) value, which proved the efficacy of reducing dark circles. Primos-Lite data showed that the wrinkles parameters of Ra, the wrinkle area %, and number of the wrinkles under the eyes and crow's feet revealed significant reduction to varying degrees. Cutometer results showed that R2 value increased significantly by 13.0%, indicating the benefits of firmer skin. In addition, subject assessment revealed that at the end of 6 weeks, the eye skin was noticeably improved. Conclusions By clinical evaluation and subject assessment, the novel formulation containing supramolecular retinol plus acmella oleracea extract can effectively diminish the collective signs of stressed urban eye skin for Chinese female in terms of dark circles, fine wrinkles, and sagging skin with good tolerance.

Individuals with chronic ankle instability (CAI) are believed to rely more on visual information during postural control due to impaired proprioceptive function, which may increase the risk of injury when their vision is limited during sports activities. OBJECTIVES To compare (1) the effects of balance training with and without stroboscopic glasses on postural control and (2) the effects of the training on visual reliance in patients with CAI. DESIGN A randomized controlled clinical trial. METHODS Twenty-eight CAI patients were equally assigned to one of 2 groups: strobe or control group. The strobe group wore stroboscopic glasses during a 4-week balance training. Static postural control, a single-leg hop balance test calculated by Dynamic Postural Stability Index (DPSI), and the Y-Balance test (YBT) were measured. AIMS We evaluated the first in-human performance of a novel hybrid imaging catheter that permits simultaneous and co-registered acquisition of intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) images. METHODS AND RESULTS A total of 17 patients undergoing planned percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) were imaged between August 2018 and August 2019. Eleven patients with both pre- and post-PCI IVUS and OCT images were included in the offline image analysis. IVUS and OCT images were analyzed separately then together with co-registered images for pre-stent findings, and only separately for post-stent findings. A total of 926 frames were analyzed (218 pre-PCI, 708 post-PCI). There was substantial agreement to detect calcific plaque between co-registered IVUS-OCT and standalone IVUS (Kappa 0.72 [0.65-0.79]) and standalone OCT (Kappa 0.75 [0.68-0.81]) while standalone imaging modalities showed lower agreement to detect lipidic and fibrotic plaques compared with co-registered IVUS-OCT. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the clinical application of spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) for anterior uveitis in dogs. ANIMALS AND PROCEDURES Client-owned dogs presenting with anterior uveitis and clinically healthy dogs were enrolled in this study. Included eyes were divided into 5 groups by flare grade and 3 groups by cell grade through slit-lamp biomicroscopy. Each eye was examined using SD-OCT following slit-lamp biomicroscopy. The ratio of aqueous signal intensity to air signal intensity, which is called the aqueous-to-air relative intensity (ARI) index, was used to evaluate the flare grade. Cell number, central corneal thickness (CCT), and the presence of keratic precipitates (KPs) were analyzed on SD-OCT. The OCT parameters, including ARI index, cell number, and CCT, were compared to the slit-lamp clinical flare and cell grade. OBJECTIVE To investigate the therapeutic effects of topical equine amniotic membrane (eAM) suspension following corneal wounding in a controlled experimental setting. PROCEDURES Equine amniotic membrane was collected, gamma irradiated, homogenized for topical suspension preparation, and cryopreserved. Corneoscleral rims harvested from fresh rabbit globes were wounded via keratectomy and were maintained in an air-liquid interface ex vivo corneal culture model. Treatment groups included topical gamma irradiated eAM suspension (n = 20) and a control group (n = 20). Re-epithelialization of the wound was assessed with daily photographic evaluation of area of fluorescein uptake (mm2 ). Corneal wound haze after a 21-day period was assessed by photographic analysis of haze area (mm2 ) and pixel intensity (0-255). Histologic processing of corneal tissue was performed, and protein identification of eAM suspension using Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). RESULTS The average day of complete corneal re-epithelialization in controls (5.5 ± 1.1) and topically treated (5.5 ± 0.6) corneas, and rates of reduction in area of fluorescein uptake over time did not significantly differ (p = .44).
