The surface properties of newsprint and other paper qualities are to a great extent determined by the properties of the cellulose fibres. An appropriate description of these fibres as they appear in the paper is therefore important and can be used for quality classification and process monitoring. We suggest a model that considers the fibre geometry and appearance. It is based on a two-dimensional shot-noise process. The model is fit by minimizing a weighted least squares distance between the model-based and estimated covariance functions and this provides estimates of the fibre size, intensity and the non-uniform distribution of the fibre orientation. This paper offers an analytical review of Miller's classic paper of 1956 on 'the magical number 7'. It takes account of that paper's contradictions as well as of its implicit conclusions. Miller's text is by no means clear in its logic or in its terms, and a review might be deemed helpful to those who are trying to understand it. The discussion begins with a brief historical overview. Miller's paper is then reviewed according to the order of the points made by Miller, thus facilitating a lucid comparative reading with that paper. Guidance on interpreting Miller's text is given throughout, leading to a number of technical conclusions. This paper aims to trace the origins of dual entry beyond a Eurocentric boundary. The aim can be refined further by asking: did the Chinese use dual entry and how did dual entry appear in Europe. Double entry is more advanced as it includes the location of the account in which the contra entry is made. Dual entry approaches accounting, like mathematics, as a tautology, whereby an equation is constructed from a simple axiom. Considering the fact that authorship order plays such a significant role as a basis for scientific merit, this paper looks into the practices of authorship order from a research ethical perspective. We conclude that there is a wide variety of practices and no common understanding of what the different authorship positions signify. Authorship guidelines do not provide much help. We recognize that, regardless of what system for valuing authorship positions is used, it will be misleading and unfair in most applications because relative contributions vary in ways that are not captured by fixed value assignments to authorship positions. In theory, assigning percentage figures reflecting the relative contributions of the authors would solve that problem, but we argue that such a scheme is not likely to work in practice. It can also be questioned whether relative, rather than absolute, contributions should be the basis for scientific merit. Contributorship is discussed as an alternative, but is recognized to be insufficient both in communicating absolute and relative contributions, as standardly used. However, there may be a way forward with contributorship, but then, the level of detail needs to increase considerably and its application be standardized. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper investigates semiotics as an integrative, foundational framework for operational research (OR). To this end, the semiotics of the pragmatist C.S. Peirce is explained and its application in OR research, and consulting practice is explored. It is the fourth in a series of papers each seeking to ground OR in a different logic: philosophic/mathematical logic, pragmatic logic, economic logic and now semiotic logic. For Peirce, semiotics is a logic, and as such it is argued in the paper that it can embrace philosophical/mathematical, pragmatic and economic logics. The comprehensive nature of semiotics is such that it brings to a close the research programme aimed at establishing foundations for OR. However, the closure of one programme opens up another—the application of semiotics in OR practice and academic research. This paper details a literature review of mathematics vocabulary intervention studies for students with mathematics difficulty. The primary aim was to identify instructional practices that support mathematics vocabulary development. We conducted a database search to identify mathematics intervention studies either focused exclusively on vocabulary or with an embedded vocabulary component. Ultimately, 13 studies with participants from kindergarten to Grade 8 were included in the review. The majority of included studies had dual foci on vocabulary and other mathematics content, including whole number computation, word problem solving, fractions, algebra, or geometry. All studies that measured mathematics vocabulary performance indicated positive student outcomes. In addition, multiple studies indicated positive effects on measures of other mathematics content beyond mathematics vocabulary knowledge. We noted six instructional practices across studies that bolstered the mathematics vocabulary performance of students with mathematics difficulty. From most to least common, these practices included formal vocabulary use, explicit instruction, use of representations, repeated exposures, pre‐teaching, and graphic organizers. In the process of autonomous vehicle motion planning and to create comfort for vehicle occupants, factors that must be considered are the vehicle's safety features and the road's slipperiness and smoothness. In this paper, we build a mathematical model based on the combination of a genetic algorithm and a neural network to offer lane‐change solutions of autonomous vehicles, focusing on human vehicle control skills. Traditional moving planning methods often use vehicle kinematic and dynamic constraints when creating lane‐change trajectories for autonomous vehicles. When comparing this generated trajectory with a man‐generated moving trajectory, however, there is in fact a significant difference. Therefore, to draw the optimal factors from the actual driver's lane‐change operations, the solution in this paper builds the training data set for the moving planning process with lane change operation by humans with optimal elements. The simulation results are performed in a MATLAB simulation environment to demonstrate that the proposed solution operates effectively with optimal points such as operator maneuvers and improved comfort for passengers as well as creating a smooth and slippery lane‐change trajectory. Introduction: To increase the likelihood of research responding to societal needs, intermediary structures such as Science Shops are being created. Science Shops respond to research needs identified and prioritized through participatory processes involving civil society. However, these are not mainstream structures, and most research needs addressed by the scientific community are not defined by a diversity of stakeholders (including citizens) but are mostly prioritized by researchers and funders. Literature shows this often leads to bias between the research topics investigated and the research needs of other relevant stakeholders. This study analyses how 14 Science Shops contribute to decreasing bias in health research agenda setting. Methodology: We compare the research priorities identified through participatory processes by the Science Shops, which participated in the European Union‐funded project InSPIRES (2017–2021), to the available research addressed in the literature (identified in Web of Science), which we use as a proxy for current research priorities. Results: Science Shop projects contributed to decreasing the existing bias in health research agenda setting: (1) between drug and nondrug treatments and (2) between clinical trials of treatments for illnesses affecting high‐income versus middle‐ and low‐income countries, which leads to a lack of local strategies for high disease burdens in nonhigh‐income regions. Conclusion: This study provides the first evidence of Science Shops' effectiveness in addressing current biases in health research agenda setting. While there is increased attention to power, privilege, and access in mathematics education, conversations around race and disability are often left out of the conversation. Disability in mathematics continues to be studied with a lens that focuses on behavior, rather than attending to the situated and sociopolitical context in which teaching and learning takes place. This paper specifically calls on the importance of an intersectional analysis of ability and the need for explicit conversation on the interwoven nature of race and disability to uncover exclusionary practices of hyper‐labeling, hyper‐surveilling, and hyper‐punishing for those outside notions of normalcy. Drawing on sociopolitical perspectives informed by Disability Critical Race Theory (DisCrit) and DisCrit Classroom Ecology, I share a framework of DisCrit noticing to consider the interwoven nature of racism and ableism in mathematics classrooms, provide a context to develop preservice teacher DisCrit noticing during mathematics methods, and a case example to highlight implications and transformative possibilities for (re)organizing classrooms through the DisCrit noticing framework. Grey wolf optimization (GWO) algorithm is a new emerging algorithm that is based on the social hierarchy of grey wolves as well as their hunting and cooperation strategies. Introduced in 2014, this algorithm has been used by a large number of researchers and designers, such that the number of citations to the original paper exceeded many other algorithms. In a recent study by Niu et al., one of the main drawbacks of this algorithm for optimizing real‐world problems was introduced. In summary, they showed that GWO's performance degrades as the optimal solution of the problem diverges from 0. In this paper, by introducing a straightforward modification to the original GWO algorithm, that is, neglecting its social hierarchy, the authors were able to largely eliminate this defect and open a new perspective for future use of this algorithm. This paper pertains to goal programming with fuzzy goals and fuzzy priorities, Hannan [1], in his paper on fuzzy goal programming, alludes to the difficulty of handling fuzzy priorities and further notes that a method that this author proposed [2] may lead to incorrect results. In this note, the general problem of goal programming with fuzzy priorities is reexamined, along with the solution to the specific example presented in my original paper[2]. For the past forty years, United States school districts have increasingly hired mathematics specialists to support the teaching and learning of mathematics. Despite the prevalence of this professional development structure, this is a relatively new research topic for the mathematics education field. In this paper, we report findings from an exploration of literature between 1981 and 2018 to examine the role of mathematics specialists (MSs). In particular, we examine: (a) MS positioning across research; (b) historical trends of school‐based MS research; and (c) orientations of school‐based MSs within research. Using the McGatha and Rigelman framework as an analytic lens, we found that beyond the positions identified in their framework (coach, intervention specialist, teacher), there were four additional MS positionings within the research (learner, other p‐12 stakeholder, university stakeholder, unknown). Ultimately, we forward an expansion to the McGatha and Rigelman framework to include these new categories, as well as contextual descriptions and working definitions to support future research in more accurately and robustly capturing the ways in which MSs are investigated and reported on in research. The purpose of this paper is to analyze stochastic dominance (SD) rules for truncated normal distributions, symmetrically truncated at least in the lower tail. This allows us to use distributions which conform to the limited liability condition of real life situations. We show that the SD rule reduces to an intuitively appealing rule that also provides a theoretical rationale for Baumol's mean-confidence limit criterion. We analyze the preference between two risky options having truncated normal distributions. We contrast the results with the preference that would obtain without truncation, employing in the analysis stochastic dominance (hereafter SD) decision rules well known in the finance and economic literature. We note that if two distributions F and G intersect only once and F crosses G from below, then second order SD (SSD) is equivalent to the condition E[sub F](x) ≥ E[sub G](x). In his paper, Roth has used a three-person game example to illustrate certain difficulties connected with generalizations of the Shapley value for games without side payment. This note argues that cooperative solution concepts in general often give rise to similar difficulties, and that the best way of avoiding them is to analyze cooperative games by means of noncooperative bargaining models. The increased importance of the nonnormal stable Paretian distributions necessitates the development of an investment criterion which does not depend upon the mean and variance. This paper develops a criterion based upon the location and scale parameters of a probability distribution. The rationale of the criterion is established using stochastic dominance orderings of probability distributions. The paper also presents estimators for the location and scale parameters. The objective of this article is to formulate a new bioengineering theoretical framework for modelling the biomechanical efficacy of cyanoacrylate skin protectants, with specific focus on the Marathon technology (Medline Industries, Inc., Northfield, Illinois) and its modes of action. This work details the bioengineering and mathematical formulations of the theory, which is based on the classic engineering theories of flexural stiffness of coated elements and deformation friction. Based on the relevant skin anatomy and physiology, this paper demonstrates: (a) the contribution of the polymerised cyanoacrylate coating to flexural skin stiffness, which facilitates protection from non‐axial (eg, compressive) localised mechanical forces; and (b) the contribution of the aforementioned coating to reduction in frictional forces and surface shear stresses applied by contacting objects such as medical devices. The present theoretical framework establishes that application of the cyanoacrylate coating provides considerable biomechanical protection to skin and subdermally, by shielding skin from both compressive and frictional (shearing) forces. Moreover, these analyses indicate that the prophylactic effects of the studied cyanoacrylate coating become particularly strong where the skin is thin or fragile (typically less than ~0.7 mm thick), which is characteristic to old age, post‐neural injuries, neuromuscular diseases, and in disuse‐induced tissue atrophy conditions. This paper demonstrates that information systems (IS) researchers and practitioners can make a significant contribution to the grand challenge of sustainability in light of global climate change. In doing so, the paper takes a novel perspective by going beyond the dominant emphasis in the Green IS literature on climate change mitigation to focus on climate change adaptation. To demonstrate how IS researchers and practitioners can engage with the grand challenge of sustainability, we report the findings of an investigation into the role of IS in climate change adaptation programmes of the government of New South Wales, Australia. Canonical action research, informed by activity theory, proved to be an appropriate methodology for this investigation by combining iterative collaborative engagement and rigorous scholarly reflection. Activity theory has previously been successfully used in IS research as a framework for inquiry and description but not for prediction. This raised questions, addressed in this study, about whether or not activity theory could be used to guide interventions and make sense of their impact. The findings reveal how activity theory provides an appropriate balance between scope and detail to accommodate the complex processes of planning and implementing climate change adaptation programmes. We conclude that while climate adaptation is complex, activity theory, specifically five dynamic dimensions for deep sense-making, can inform interventions in climate change adaptation projects. Most significantly, we demonstrate that IS experts can make a positive contribution to addressing one of the most important grand challenges of our time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is obviously important to harmonize national statistical definitions of employment, unemployment and inactivity - both for general accuracy and for international data comparability. This concise overview compares the statistical practices of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Slovenia and Turkey in this respect. While all of these territories and countries rely on labour force surveys to collect the required data, they exhibit discrepancies as to the definitions, classification and labour market status of specific groups, particularly in regard to the statistical category of unemployment. The primary objectives of this article will be to reconcile the several lease or buy models and identify points where different choices will lead to different conclusions. However, the immediate motivation is the recent article by Johnson and Lewellen on the lease-or-buy decision in this journal. They state, "We will first indicate our disaffections with extant models of this process and then suggest an alternative--allegedly superior--model." For ease in comparing the results of this paper with those of Johnson and Lewellen (hereafter referred to as J & L), to the extent it is feasible, the same set of symbols and equations will be used. The unknown, true parameters ( μ 0, ν 0) are uniquely determined by the system of equations E{ g( X, μ 0, ν 0)} = 0, where g = ( g 1,..., g p+ q) is a vector of p+ q functions. In this paper we develop an empirical likelihood (EL) method to do inference for the parameter μ 0. The results in this paper are valid under very mild conditions on the vector of criterion functions g. In particular, we do not require that g 1,..., g p+ q are smooth in μ or ν. This offers the advantage that the criterion function may involve indicators, which are encountered when considering, e.g. differences of quantiles, copulas, ROC curves, to mention just a few examples. We prove the asymptotic limit of the empirical log-likelihood ratio, and carry out a small simulation study to test the performance of the proposed EL method for small samples. The process of examination marking is complex, requiring examiners to engage in a variety of cognitive operations. While consideration has been given to marking practices in a few specific contexts, those of General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) examiners have yet to receive serious attention. This study's aims, therefore, were: first, to investigate the cognitive strategies used when marking GCSEs; and second, to interpret them within the context of psychological theories of human judgement. Two contrasting GCSE examination papers were considered: Mathematics used a 'points-based' marking scheme, while Business Studies relied on a 'levels-based' scheme. Small groups of experienced examiners marked script samples, and using a concurrent 'think aloud' method, verbal protocols were obtained. Using a semi-structured interview schedule, the examiners were then questioned retrospectively. Qualitative data analysis supported a model of five distinct cognitive marking strategies, which can be interpreted within dual-processing theories of judgement. The case-only design provides one approach to assess possible interactions between genetic and environmental factors. It has been shown that if these factors are conditionally independent, then a case-only analysis is not only valid but also very efficient. However, a drawback of the case-only approach is that its conclusions may be biased by genotyping errors. In this paper, our main aim is to propose a method for analysis of case-only studies when these errors occur. We show that the bias can be adjusted through the use of internal validation data, which are obtained by genotyping some sampled individuals twice. Our analysis is based on a simple and yet highly efficient conditional likelihood approach. Abstract: Charles Babbage (1791–1871) was the embodiment of a polymath: elected a Royal Society fellow, holder of the Lucasian Chair of mathematics at Cambridge, founder of the London Statistical Society, author of many papers and full-length monographs and, most famously from a 21st century perspective, the architect of modern computing with his difference engines and designs for the analytical engine. The scale and complexity of these machines meant their realisation was dependent upon the latest industrial advances like parts standardization and machine tool technology. As a result Babbage committed large amounts of his time and money to the theoretical and empirical study of advanced production and engineering practice. This paper argues that Charles Babbage deserves to be recognised as a pioneer in the field of operations management. His path-breaking contributions were born of a singular intellect and degree of creativity combined with a commitment to empiricist scientific method and statistical measurement. Moreover, he was working as Britain transformed itself into the most highly industrialized country the world had ever seen. The paper draws in particular upon the various editions of his best-selling book, ‘On the Economy of Machines and Manufactures’, first published in 1832. It reviews the many core operations principles evident in Babbage''s analyses and highlights insights that remain relevant to today''s theoretical and practical concerns. The paper concludes with a discussion of how a combination of contextual and biographical factors left Charles Babbage a largely unsung pioneer in the field of operations management. This paper studies the representation and large-sample consistency for non-parametric maximum likelihood estimators (NPMLEs) of an unknown baseline continuous cumulative-hazard-type function and parameter of group survival difference, based on right-censored two-sample survival data with marginal survival function assumed to follow a transformation model, a slight generalization of the class of frailty survival regression models. The paper's main theoretical results are existence and unique a.s. limit, characterized variationally, for large data samples of the NPMLE of baseline nuisance function in an appropriately defined neighbourhood of the true function when the group difference parameter is fixed, leading to consistency of the NPMLE when the difference parameter is fixed at a consistent estimator of its true value. The joint NPMLE is also shown to be consistent. Aim: To explore how undergraduate nursing students are assessed on nursing numeracy and medication calculations from the perspective of Australian nurse education leaders. Design: A qualitative study. Methods: Semi‐structured interviews were conducted with 17 nurse education leaders between November 2022 and January 2023. Braun and Clarke's six phases of thematic analysis were used to analyse the data. Results: Five key themes were identified: (i) high expectations to keep the public safe, (ii) diverse assessment formats, (iii) different ways of managing assessment integrity, (iv) assessment conditions incongruent to the clinical setting and (v) supporting struggling students. Conclusion: Nurse education leaders set high standards requiring students to achieve 100% in numeracy and medication calculation assessments, thus maintaining the reputation of nursing and patient safety. However, students struggled to meet this expectation. Diverse assessment formats were implemented, with some examination conditions contrary to clinical practice. Currently, there is no benchmark or independent point of registration examination in Australia, hence the problem is each university had a different standard to judge students' competence. Gaining insight into how these assessments are conducted provides an opportunity to work towards an evidence‐based model or benchmark for the assessment of numeracy. Implications for the Profession: Dosage errors in clinical practice threaten patient safety and the reputation of the nursing profession. The accuracy rate of calculations by undergraduate and registered nurses is deficient worldwide. This research highlights a major educational issue, that being the wide variation in how numeracy assessments are conducted with no clear pedagogical rationale for a standardised method. Physical activity (PA) during childhood and adolescence is important for the accrual of maximal peak bone mass. The precise dose that benefits bone remains unclear as methods commonly used to analyze PA data are unsuitable for measuring bone‐relevant PA. Using improved accelerometry methods, this study identified the amount and intensity of PA most strongly associated with bone outcomes in 11–12‐year‐olds. Participants (n = 770; 382 boys) underwent tibial peripheral quantitative computed tomography to assess trabecular and cortical density, endosteal and periosteal circumference and polar stress‐strain index. Seven‐day wrist‐worn raw acceleration data averaged over 1‐s epochs was used to estimate time accumulated above incremental PA intensities (50 milli‐gravitational unit (mg) increments from 200 to 3000 mg). Associations between time spent above each 50 mg increment and bone outcomes were assessed using multiple linear regression, adjusted for age, sex, height, weight, maturity, socioeconomic position, muscle cross‐sectional area and PA below the intensity of interest. There was a gradual increase in mean R2 change across all bone‐related outcomes as the intensity increased in 50 mg increments from >200 to >700 mg. All outcomes became significant at >700 mg (R2 change = 0.6%–1.3% and p = 0.001–0.02). Any further increases in intensity led to a reduction in mean R2 change and associations became non‐significant for all outcomes >1500 mg. Using more appropriate accelerometry methods (1‐s epochs; no a priori application of traditional cut‐points) enabled us to identify that ∼10 min/day of PA >700 mg (equivalent to running ∼10 km/h) was positively associated with pQCT‐derived measures of bone density, geometry and strength in 11–12‐year‐olds. Highlights: Accelerometry methods that are commonly used to assess free‐living, bone‐relevant physical activity (PA) are not well suited to measuring bone‐specific characteristics of PA (short bursts of high‐impact activity).Processing raw acceleration data using much shorter epochs (1‐s) and using incremental 50 mg intensity thresholds (rather than traditional, broad intensity thresholds) enabled a bone‐specific, beneficial intensity to be identified.The methods outlined provide a means for more precisely assessing free‐living bone‐relevant PA and permit the transparent and reproducible analysis of raw accelerometry data, which will enhance our ability to quantify dose‐response associations in the future. Background: Investment in mobile devices to support primary or elementary education is increasing and must be informed by robust evidence to demonstrate impact. This systematic review of randomised controlled trials sought to identify the overall impact of mobile devices to support literacy and numeracy outcomes in mainstream primary classrooms. Objectives: The aim of this systematic review was to understand how mobile devices are used in primary/elementary education around the world, and in particular, determine how activities undertaken using mobile devices in the primary classroom might impact literacy and numeracy attainment for the pupils involved. Within this context, mobile devices are defined as tablets (including iPads and other branded devices), smartphones (usually those with a touchscreen interface and internet connectivity) and handheld games consoles (again usually with touchscreen and internet‐enabled). The interventions of interest were those aimed at improving literacy and/or numeracy for children aged 4–12 within the primary/elementary school (or equivalent) classroom. Specifically, the review aimed to answer the following research questions: ‐What is the effect of mobile device integration in the primary school classroom on children's literacy and numeracy outcomes?‐Are there specific devices which are more effective in supporting literacy and numeracy? (Tablets, smartphones, or handheld games consoles)‐Are there specific classroom integration activities which moderate effectiveness in supporting literacy and numeracy?‐Are there specific groups of children for whom mobile devices are more effective in supporting literacy and numeracy? (Across age group and gender).‐Do the benefits of mobile devices for learning last for any time beyond the study?‐What is the quality of available evidence on the use of mobile devices in primary/elementary education, and where is further research needed in this regard? An Expert Advisory Group supported the review process at key stages to ensure relevance to current practice. Search Methods: The search strategy was designed to retrieve both published and unpublished literature, and incorporated relevant journal and other databases with a focus on education and social sciences. Robust electronic database searches were undertaken (12 databases, including APA PsychInfo, Web of Science, ERIC, British Education Index and others, and relevant government and other websites), as well as a hand‐search of relevant journals and conference proceedings. Contact was also made with prominent authors in the field to identify any ongoing or unpublished research. All searches and author contact took place between October and November 2020. The review team acknowledges that new studies will likely have emerged since and are not captured at this time. A further update to the review in the future is important and would build on the evidence reflected here. Selection Criteria: The review included children within mainstream primary/elementary/kindergarten education settings in any country (aged 4–12), and interventions or activities initiated within the primary school classroom (or global equivalent) that used mobile devices (including tablets, smartphones, or hand‐held gaming devices) to intentionally support literacy or numeracy learning. In terms of study design, only Randomised Controlled Trials were included in the review. Data Collection and Analysis: A total of 668 references were identified through a robust search strategy including published and unpublished literature. Following duplicate screening, 18 relevant studies, including 11,126 participants, 14 unique interventions, and 46 relevant outcome measures were synthesised using Robust Variance Estimation and a random effects meta‐analysis model. Risk of Bias assessment was undertaken by three reviewers using the ROB2 tool to assess the quality of studies, with 13 studies rated as having some concerns, and 5 as having high risk of bias. Qualitative data was also extracted and analysed in relation to the types of interventions included to allow a comparison of the key elements of each. Main Results: A positive, statistically significant combined effect was found (Cohen's d = 0.24, CI 0.0707 to 0.409, p < 0.01), demonstrating that in the studies and interventions included, children undertaking maths or literacy interventions using mobile devices achieved higher numeracy or literacy outcomes than those using an alternative device (e.g. a laptop or desktop computer) or no device (class activities as usual). However these results should be interpreted with caution given the risk of bias assessment noted above (5 studies rated high risk of bias and 13 rated as having some concerns). As the interventions and classroom circumstances differed quite widely, further research is needed to understand any potential impact more fully. Sensitivity analysis aimed to identify moderating factors including age or gender, screen size, frequency/dosage of intervention exposure, and programme implementation features/activities (based on Puentedura's [2009] SAMR model of technology integration). There were too few studies identified to support quantitative analysis of sufficient power to draw robust conclusions on moderating factors, and insufficient data to determine impact beyond immediate post‐test period. Sensitivty analysis was also undertaken to exclude the five studies identified as having a high risk of bias, to identify any impact they may have on overall findings. Authors' Conclusions: Overall, this review demonstrates that for the specific interventions and studies included, mobile device use in the classroom led to a significant, positive effect on literacy and numeracy outcomes for the children involved, bringing positive implications for their continued use in primary education. However given the concerns on risk of bias assessment reported above, the differing circumstances, interventions and treatment conditions and intensities, the findings must be interpreted with caution. The review also supports the need for further robust research to better understand what works, under what circumstances, and for whom, in the use of mobile devices to support learning. As a participant in the development of mathematical sociology over the past several decades, the author undertakes a personal and historical review of the field. A special effort is made to link early innovations and interests to recent developments. The paper deals successively with (a) the origins of mathematical sociology and its early achievements, (b) the cognitive interests and values of mathematical sociologists in relation to ideas associated with the founders of sociology, (c) the scope of mathematical contributions in terms of the general components of human action and society, and (d) the problematic specialty status of mathematical sociology. Currently, medicine is transforming towards molecular systems medicine (MSM), based on molecular systems biology (MSB). These approaches should be related to Ludwig von Bertalanffy's vision of "organismic" systems biology/medicine (OSB/OSM) and of general system theory (GST), which he created already in the 1930s. In this paper, on the basis of current diversity of knowledge in medicine, major differences between MSB/MSM and OSB/OSM are highlighted: MSB is based on biochemical high‐throughput technologies, sophisticated mathematical data analytical tools, and supercomputers for computation, whereas OSB is based on developmental biology and is concept and theory oriented. Metatheoretical considerations show that holistic but still reductive MSM cannot bridge the categorical molecule–cell difference, the mind–body difference, and the environment–organism gap by a consistent molecular and mechanistic theory of the organism. In contrast, the options of theoretical interlevel modelling with the help of simply structured but complexly functioning organ models are discussed here. As example, the neurochemical mobile of the brain is discussed. Consequently, a reconsideration of GST in medicine, targeting OSM, seems to be fruitful by linking MSM with a core concept of a systems pathology and with psychosocial and clinical medicine. Mathematical modelling is playing an increasing role in studies of ecological systems. This requires the communication of the details of a mathematical model, including the use of mathematical notation to represent ecological variables, parameters and processes.In our experience, the clarity of mathematical notation varies between papers and can often be inconsistent with general conventions. Poor notation can impede communication and understanding of ideas, and make models appear more complicated than necessary.Here, we present some guidelines, including: (a) define every term in an equation, (b) use fonts appropriately (italicise mathematical symbols, use bold lower case for vectors and bold upper case for matrices), (c) use subscripts appropriately (to index quantities, for example, by year), (d) use superscripts appropriately (to indicate a power, the transpose of a matrix or the steady‐state value of a quantity), (e) avoid multiletter variable names, and (f) revisit notation early on in a project to see if it should be refined.Although we focus mainly on ecology, our guidelines should be of interest to researchers applying models in evolutionary biology and broader areas of biology. The article reports on the discussion of the study concerning the learning of mathematics. The discussion contains arguments regarding the paper written by professor Stone about functions. One of the arguments that is given attention to, is the concept of function being connected with the primitive concepts of pure logic, nearly unanalyzable and must be grasped by a psychological act of direct perception. This argument is also related to the child's development as the notion of grasping and perception are described to occur at some point in the development.

How do people stretch their understanding of magnitude from the experiential range to the very large quantities and ranges important in science, geopolitics, and mathematics? This paper empirically evaluates how and whether people make use of numerical categories when estimating relative magnitudes of numbers across many orders of magnitude. We hypothesize that people use scale words-thousand, million, billion-to carve the large number line into categories, stretching linear responses across items within each category. If so, discontinuities in position and response time are expected near the boundaries between categories. In contrast to previous work (Landy, Silbert, & Goldin, 2013) that suggested only that a minority of college undergraduates employed categorical boundaries, we find that discontinuities near category boundaries occur in most or all participants, but that accurate and inaccurate participants respond in opposite ways to category boundaries. Existing methods for the optimal superimposition of one vector set on another in the comparison of parts or the whole of related protein molecules are based on the precondition that the centroids of the two sets are coincident. As a result, the translation components of the transformation are artificially removed from the superimposition process. This is obviously not strict in the mathematical sense. The theorem presented in this paper is a strict solution for the optimal superimposition of two vector sets, which is in fact the problem of the weighted optimal rigid superimposition of two vector sets. We analyze the effect of open access (OA) status of journal articles on citations. Using cross‐sectional and panel data from mathematics and economics, we perform negative binomial, Poisson, and generalized method of moments/instrumental variable methods regressions. We benefit from a natural experiment via hybrid OA pilot agreements. Citations to pre‐prints allow us to identify the intrinsic quality of articles prior to journal publication. Overall, our analysis suggests that there is no hybrid OA citation benefit. However, for the subpopulation of articles without OA pre‐ or post‐prints, we find positive hybrid OA effects for the full sample and each discipline separately. Three mathematics and science educators reexamine and reflect on their teaching within the context of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences (AAAS) and National Council of Mathematics 'call to make math and science education accessible to all. The paper highlights the importance of teachers reflecting on their teaching practices in order to create opportunities for their students especially those in the urban setting. The educators argue that teachers' reflection on their teaching can cause them to recognize and validate their students' ways of knowing as they identify the students' hidden/concealed abilities that are often masked by their behaviors. The educators discuss their experiences and highlight the lessons that they learned about ways to prepare teachers to successfully teach math and science students in urban settings. Culturally responsive pedagogy and cultural competency are critical skills that teachers need to develop in order to teach all children, especially those in the math and science classroom in the urban setting. A cross-curricular structured-probe task-based clinical interview study with 44 pairs of third year high-school mathematics students, most of whom were high achieving, was conducted to investigate their approaches to a variety of algebra problems. This paper presents results from three problems that were posed in symbolic form. Two problems are TIMSS items (a linear inequality and an equation involving square roots). The other problem involves square roots. We found that the majority of student pairs used symbol manipulation when solving the problems, and while many students seemed to prefer symbolic over graphical and tabular representations in their first attempt at solving the problems, we found that it was common for student pairs to use more than one strategy throughout the course of their solving. This paper examines the effect of attending a Catholic high school on educational outcomes. The statistical analysis is based on data obtained from the US National Educational Longitudinal Study. Using propensity score matching methods to control for selection bias, we find that Catholic schooling improves maths test scores, with stronger effects for males than for females, but appears to have little effect (if any) on reading scores. Catholic schooling also raises high school graduation rates and substantially increases the likelihood of enrolment in a 4-year college. Use of the difference-in-difference method suggests that the effect of Catholic schooling on changes in maths scores is more muted, though still statistically significant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Diminishing marginal utility (DMU) is neither necessary nor sufficient for downward-sloping demand. Yet, upper-division undergraduate and beginning graduate students often presume otherwise. This paper provides two simple counter-examples that can be used to help students understand that the Law of Demand does not depend on DMU. Sliced inverse regression (SIR) is a dimension reduction technique that is both efficient and simple to implement. The procedure itself relies heavily on estimates that are known to be highly non-robust and, as such, the issue of robustness is often raised. This paper looks at the robustness of SIR by deriving and plotting the influence function for a variety of contamination structures. The sample influence function is also considered and used to highlight that common outlier detection and deletion methods may not be entirely useful to SIR. The asymptotic variance of the estimates is also derived for the single index model when the explanatory variable is known to be normally distributed. This paper studies Cox's proportional hazards model under covariate measurement error. Nakamura's [ Biometrika 77 (1990) 127] methodology of corrected log-likelihood will be applied to the so-called Breslow likelihood, which is, in the absence of measurement error, equivalent to partial likelihood. For a general error model with possibly heteroscedastic and non-normal additive measurement error, corrected estimators of the regression parameter as well as of the baseline hazard rate are obtained. The estimators proposed by Nakamura [Biometrics 48 (1992) 829], Kong et al. [ Scand. J. Statist. 25 (1998) 573] and Kong & Gu [ Statistica Sinica 9 (1999) 953] are re-established in the special cases considered there. Abstract. This paper presents the use of likelihood-based methods for controlled calibration. Recent results on higher-order asymptotics are exploited to obtain confidence regions for the output of the calibration process. A general likelihood-based approach is presented, and several types of calibration problems are tackled within this framework. ABSTRACT. In this paper, we develop an approximation for the most powerful invariant test of one location-scale family against another one. The approach is based on the Laplace method for integrals and yields a very accurate approximation of the density of a maximal invariant. Moreover, it can be applied to a much wider set of pairs of densities than previously possible. Many examples are worked out. The resulting test is easy to compute and its power is shown to be very close to that of the best test. By using versions of the Laplace method, the approach is extended to goodness-of-fit tests for residuals in regression and to some multivariate distributions.
