Thessaloniki and its mayor have been portrayed quite favourably in international mainstream media compared to the Greek state after the 2008 economic crisis. The dominant (media) discourses on Greece interpret the crisis as the result of the failure of the Greek state to reform due to the prevalence of a traditional political culture over a modern one and the moral failures of the population. In the international media representations of Thessaloniki, the local government has been described as "exceptional" in its crisis management compared to the state and other local governments, and the city's mayor, Yiannis Boutaris, has been portrayed as a reform hero, due to the implemented entrepreneurial development strategy and the revamp of the city's image through place branding. Analysing the key role of international media in the production and reproduction of a place‐branding campaign of Thessaloniki in international media by employing critical discourse analysis, the paper questions the favourable representations of the city compared to the Greek state during the same period. I argue that the serial repetition of positive images contributed to Thessaloniki being perceived as an example to be followed by other Greek local governments and the central state, acting as a best practice example for transformations envisioned on wider scales. The paper contributes to place‐branding debates by illustrating the important role of international media in the dissemination of place brands, and by analysing how media representations of place may serve the legitimation of processes of neoliberalisation on scales wider than the concrete urban setting where they occur. ABSTRACT Drawing upon an extended case study in six industrial sectors in the city of Thessaloniki, Greece this paper highlights that the transformation of the local production system is based on the locally specific interaction of two interrelated restructuring trajectories: a 'weak' strategy that is mainly associated to small/medium-sized labour intensive enterprises and a 'strong' strategy which is fairly connected to large, increasingly internationalised firms. Both these strategies are found to be in need of cheap labour while they make use of the locally diversified atypical employment pools, though in different ways. In parallel, they presuppose a subordinated integration into subcontracting production systems that expands towards the regional, the Balkan and the international arena. The paper underlines that restructuring strategies in Thessaloniki, especially the prevailing 'weak' one, do not seem to alter the conditions of backwardness for the local productive system. Apart from leaving local structures poor in innovative production, automated machinery and non-hierarchical networking practices they are largely based on diffused, poorly-paid atypical employment. The paper presents the several aspects of the detailed design and the construction engineering procedure of the most important Railway Bridge of the New Double High‐Speed Railway Line connecting Athens and Thessaloniki, the two biggest cities in Greece. The total length of the bridge is 404.8m consisting of three simply supported tied arches with a width of 18.03m. The two piers, 45.5m height each, are supported on rigid caisson foundations. The bridge has been constructed using the incremental launching method due to the deep valley below. The special characteristic of the bridge is that it crosses an active fault zone, associated with large seismic events (e.g. 1954 magnitude 6.8). Seismic devices (Friction Pendulum System and Fluid Viscous Damper) are installed between the deck and the substructure in order to absorb the anticipated seismic energy and consequently reduce deck displacement and force transmission to the structural elements. Cities are crucial nodes of global economic networks. A city's economic success largely depends on its social capital and the existence of a hegemonic coalition for development. This paper focuses on Thessaloniki, the second largest city in Greece, a country on the European periphery. The slow pace of development during the last 20 years has placed Thessaloniki in a vicious circle. It is argued that given the significant structural problems in Greece, a wide social coalition for development that embraces a large segment of the socio-economic, political and intellectual forces is necessary to boost Thessaloniki's development and ensure that its fruits will be reaped by all. In this paper we present the educational process of Lin2k, a Web-based tool, which supports distant asynchronous, written, peer-collaboration in a case study. The tool constitutes an open learning environment that endows engineering students with collaborative competencies, necessary for their successful shift to professional practice. Students are engaged in a process of experiential learning of collaboration while, in parallel, we follow up their interactions and collect communication data of interest. Lin2k collaboration evaluating and adaptive feedback mechanisms are aimed at equipping students with the necessary conceptual knowledge that underlies collaborative activity. Lin2k experimental uses in the Civil Engineering Department of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, proved the efficacy of its pedagogy. The Lin2k educational process serves as a prototype that may contribute to the revision of engineering curricula so as to face the challenges that the new technologies impose, along with the necessity of relating academic to professional life. West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito‐borne RNA flavivirus which caused several epidemics worldwide. The year 2018 was a WNV record year for Europe, including Greece, with earlier and longer transmission season with higher than the previous number of cases. It has been proposed that some simple biochemical markers may be helpful for the recognition of WNV neuroinvasive disease, its differential from other neurological infectious diseases and prognosis. We describe four cases that suffered from WNV meningitis and/or encephalitis hospitalized in 2018 in a tertiary hospital in Thessaloniki, Greece, and investigate the importance of simple biomarkers for the recognition of WNV etiology. Highlights: 2018 was a record year for WNV with a total number of 2083 reported infections in Europe316 cases (47 fatal) of WNV infection were reported in 2018 in Greece; 241 of them were cases with neuroinvasive disease.Central nervous system (CNS) involvement consists of West Nile Meningitis (WNM), West Nile Encephalitis (WNE), or acute flaccid paralysis.ESR to CRP ratio higher than 1 might lead towards the diagnosis of WNE. The article discusses the highlights of the IV Congress of the World Conference of Associations of Theological Institutions (WOCATI) held in Neapolis, Thessaloniki, Greece from May 31 to June 7, 2008. The event was organized by WOCATI and the Ecumenical Theological Education (ETE) programme of the World Council of Churches (WCC) and attended by 60 participants. The congress tackled the diversity of approaches to theological education. The recommendations of the congress to the churches are enumerated.
