Background: Despite the availability of effective evidence‐based treatments for depression and anxiety, many ‘harder‐to‐reach’ social and patient groups experience difficulties accessing treatment. We developed a complex intervention, the AMP (Improving Access to Mental Health in Primary Care) programme, which combined community engagement (CE), tailored (individual and group) psychosocial interventions and primary care involvement. Objectives: To develop and evaluate a model for community engagement component of the complex intervention. This paper focuses on the development of relationships between stakeholders, their engagement with the issue of access to mental health and with the programme through the CE model. Design: Our evaluation draws on process data, qualitative interviews and focus groups, brought together through framework analysis to evaluate the issues and challenges encountered. Setting & participants: A case study of the South Asian community project carried out in Longsight in Greater Manchester, United Kingdom. Key findings: Complex problems require multiple local stakeholders to work in concert. Assets based approaches implicitly make demands on scarce time and resources. Community development approaches have many benefits, but perceptions of open‐ended investment are a barrier. The time‐limited nature of a CE intervention provides an impetus to ‘do it now’, allowing stakeholders to negotiate their investment over time and accommodating their wider commitments. Both tangible outcomes and recognition of process benefits were vital in maintaining involvement. Conclusions: CE interventions can play a key role in improving accessibility and acceptability by engaging patients, the public and practitioners in research and in the local service ecology. The evolution of a pervasive negative view of immigrants and its role in classroom achievement in the United States is described in this paper; beginning in the crowded urban secondary classrooms of the 1800s, to IQ testing in the 1920s that identified many as morons, imbeciles, or idiots, and to an English‐only view that permeates public and political views of teaching and learning. It is argued that categories such as ELL are ill‐advised because they obscure diversity and inform neither instruction nor research because they are unidimensional and misrepresent important underlying diversity. It is argued that evidence‐based strategies should inform teaching and learning, but that evaluating research is the purview of teachers themselves, including conducting classroom‐based action research to test recommended strategies. Children's perspectives literature repositions children and young people as active participants in surviving domestic abuse, protecting their family, opposing the violence and recovering from abuse. However, key tenets of safeguarding in relation to domestic abuse, both in practice and childhood research ethics, struggle to fully recognise children's agency and the need to empower children and young people as well as women. Children's right to participation now extends to national policy-making in many countries, yet has not been explored in relation to the interdependency of women and children's rights, safety and wellbeing where both have been subject to abuse. This paper challenges the current exclusion of young voices from the development of ethical praxis. It outlines a participatory ethical approach that promotes the inclusion and empowerment of young survivors in research and policy. Young expert advisors on Scottish domestic abuse policy (2009-11) co-develop the approach (participatory action research) which is informed by a wider study (2004-11) about children's help-seeking and solutions for practice. Mullender et al.' s accepted model of three Cs and Ds (consent, confidentiality, child protection: danger, distress, disclosure) are adapted to focus on children's agency. This paper illuminates children's emotional responses to an atrium in a contemporary Canadian paediatric hospital. It draws on a focused analysis of data elicited in a qualitative study that explored patients' perspectives on the design and architecture of the atrium. Children were involved in all phases of the project either as consultants on the research methods or participating in interviews and taking photographs of the space. The atrium consists of a main lobby with a high windowed ceiling, brightly coloured elevators with exposed mechanisms, information desks, a large fountain and food venues. Children expressed a range of emotions associated with the space. The findings demonstrate children's ability to identify multi-faceted issues related to hospital design and affirm their rights to participate in decisions regarding spaces that purportedly are designed for them. Metatheorizing is an important but generally poorly understood genre of social science inquiry that has particular relevance to systems research. In this paper, I define and present the major characteristics of metatheoretical research, discuss why it is neglected as a form of research and how it is often misunderstood and inadequately represented in the systems and management science literature. I illustrate the discussion with some examples of misunderstanding of metatheorizing from the systems science literature. I also make some recommendations for how researchers can improve their own metatheorizing and so, hopefully, help this important form of research become more widely acknowledged and critically appreciated. Summary Though some software development teams are highly effective at delivering security, others either do not care or do not have access to security experts to teach them how. Unfortunately, these latter teams are still responsible for the security of the systems they build: systems that are ever more important to ever more people. We propose that a series of lightweight interventions, six hours of facilitated workshops delivered over three months, can improve a team's motivation to consider security and awareness of assurance techniques, changing its security culture even when no security experts are involved. The interventions were developed after an Appreciative Inquiry and Grounded Theory survey of security professionals to find out what approaches work best. We tested the interventions in a participatory action research field study where we delivered the workshops to three software development organizations and evaluated their effectiveness through interviews beforehand, immediately afterwards, and after twelve months. We found that the interventions can be effective with teams with limited or no security experience and that improvement is long‐lasting. This approach and the learning points arising from the work here have the potential to be applied in many development teams, improving the security of software worldwide. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A growing body of literature has shed light into the process of conducting research with people with intellectual disabilities (ID). However, there is limited research on the feasibility of conducting research projects including various groups of people with ID, their supporters, and researchers. This paper reviews three studies conducted with these three groups of people in light of their feasibility, the knowledge generated, and their impact on individual and social change. This study used a reflective analysis focused on the main findings from the three studies, focus groups with people with ID and supporters who conducted the research, and interviews with people to whom the findings were disseminated. The analysis suggested that a team approach including active supporters and experienced researchers was critical to their feasibility. The studies generated knowledge particularly on the perspectives of people with ID on their rights. As a result of participation in these studies, some changes at the individual and social levels occurred, but these were relatively limited. The implications of this analysis for future research are discussed in the context of the implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Background Inclusive research with people with intellectual disabilities is growing internationally but with few studies examining its feasibility. Methods In undertaking a national study exploring what life was like in Ireland for people with intellectual disabilities, a community of practice was developed involving a core group of co-researchers: five people with intellectual disabilities, four university researchers and three service support staff. An additional cadre of 15 co-researchers with intellectual disabilities was recruited to undertake data gathering and analysis with 23 focus groups involving 168 participants. The research experience was documented through oral feedback, progress reports, minutes and a project review. Results and conclusions The key learning is documented arising from the setting up of an inclusive advisory group and implementation of each of six research steps. The study demonstrates feasibility and the added value of university co-researchers recruiting and developing skills together with co-researchers with intellectual disabilities. Both groups were called co-researchers and together they ran 23 focus groups across Ireland. People with intellectual disabilities talked about their lives and what could make them better. The university co-researchers wrote about what it was like doing research together and how people with intellectual disabilities joined the advisory group; decided on the questions; ran focus groups; and presented findings. Together they grew into a community of researchers where the university co-researchers shared their research skills and people with intellectual disabilities shared what it was like living with a disability. Issues addressed: Reorientation of the workforce in primary health care is a complex process and requires specific strategies and interventions. Primary health care providers are a key health care workforce that is expected to deliver tangible outcomes from disease prevention and health promotion strategies. This paper describes a training intervention that occurred as part of a broader participatory action research process for building health promotion capacity in the primary health care workforce. Methods: Participatory action research (PAR) was conducted over six action and reflection cycles in a two-year period (2001-02) in an urban community health setting in the Northern Territory. One of the PAR cycles was a training intervention that was identified as a need from a survey in the first action and reflection cycle. This training was facilitated by a health promotion specialist, face-to-face and comprised five 3.5-h sessions over a 5-month period. A pre-post questionnaire was used to measure the knowledge and skills components of the training intervention. Results: The results reinforced the importance of using a participatory approach that involved the primary health care providers themselves. Multiple strategies such as workforce development within capacity building frameworks assisted in shifting work practice more upstream. Additionally, these strategies encouraged more reflective practice and built social capital within the primary health care workforce. Conclusion: Lessons from practice reinforce that workforce development influenced work practice change and is an important element in building the health promotion capacity of primary health care centres. So what? Workforce development is critical for reorienting health services. Health promotion specialists play an important role in reorienting practice, which is only effective when combined with other strategies, and driven and led by the primary health care workforce. This paper outlines the processes and results of a participatory action research study undertaken to identify issues that may impact on strategies to foster nurse leadership in rural hospitals. Five Directors of Nursing from rural regions of Victoria, Australia participated. The group activities involved discussion and analysis of previous research, a review of current literature and critical reflection of the leadership performance of their organization. The analysis identified five key themes; dispel the myths, adopt big-picture thinking, connect with colleagues, reflect on your own conduct, and create organizational buy-in. It is essential to have an awareness of contextual challenges, an understanding of the importance of your own conduct as a visible leader, and the need for effective communication to inform the development of strategies that may be used to foster nurse leadership in rural hospitals. The platform to discuss and critically analyze leadership saw a group consensus that affirmed the need for any approach to nursing leadership to be tailored to the individual healthcare organization. Aim To report on an Israeli academic nursing project, aimed at supporting the integration of Ethiopian immigrants into nursing studies. Background The representation of ethnic minorities within nursing is crucial for the provision of efficient care in diverse societies. Nevertheless, successful integration of minority students in nursing programs is not a simple task and needs developing support systems that will attract and retain students from minorities. Ethiopian Jewish immigrants and their descendants in Israel form a community of 120 000 people. Their participation in the national workforce is low, as well as their average income. Methods The paper is based on formative evaluation, using action research, of an academic nursing program in Israel. Findings Four main strategies identify this project: (1) a policy of institutional commitment, (2) personal relations with staff, (3) personal tutoring, and (4) cultural safety education. The project has reached success in terms of attraction, retention and students' satisfactions. The project's two main challenges, which need further concern, are: (1) giving support without labelling and (2) supporting without creating dependency. Conclusions and International Policy Implications Appropriate strategies can enable success of minority students. Nevertheless, the amount of support needed for such programs raises two major questions: (1) To what extent should individual nursing departments be expected to bear solutions to this widely experienced problem? Background Loss is a universal experience and death is perceived as the ultimate loss. The overarching aim of this research is to produce a qualitative, flexible, interactive, computerised tool to support the facilitation of emotional expressions around loss for people with intellectual disabilities. This paper explores the process of using Participatory Action Research (PAR) to develop this tool. Materials and methods Participator Action Research provided the indicative framework for the process of developing a software tool that is likely to be used in practice. Results People with intellectual disability worked alongside researchers to produce an accessible, flexible piece of software that can facilitate storytelling around loss and bereavement and promote spontaneous expression that can be shared with others. Conclusion This tool has the capacity to enable individuals to capture experiences in a storyboard format; that can be stored; is easily retrievable; can be printed out; and could feasibly be personalised by the insertion of photographs. This paper analyses the changing role of consultant-researchers in the public sector, drawing empirically on a 12-year interventionist project. The investigation focuses on the heterogeneity of participants' contributions, and shows the researchers' actions to be closely entangled with participants' attitudes. Furthermore, the longitudinal study highlights the relevance of the changing reform and organisational setting in shaping these roles, such that the actors' actions can be regarded as institutionally embedded. The research focussed on individual narratives from people with learning difficulties. These narratives were then brought together to form a collective model of support. This paper outlines the detailed research process and positions the collective model of support within the self-advocacy and involvement movements. Direct quotes from people with learning difficulties illustrate the different aspects of the multifaceted model. The positive effects of Mutual Support, which form the basis of the implications for wider policy, theory and practice, are also outlined. These include people being able to participate more fully; ambitions being fulfilled; people who have been mentored becoming mentors themselves; and dignity and respect being reclaimed. Context: Participatory research (PR) is the co-construction of research through partnerships between researchers and people affected by and/or responsible for action on the issues under study. Evaluating the benefits of PR is challenging for a number of reasons: the research topics, methods, and study designs are heterogeneous; the extent of collaborative involvement may vary over the duration of a project and from one project to the next; and partnership activities may generate a complex array of both short- and long-term outcomes. Methods: Our review team consisted of a collaboration among researchers and decision makers in public health, research funding, ethics review, and community-engaged scholarship. We identified, selected, and appraised a large-variety sample of primary studies describing PR partnerships, and in each stage, two team members independently reviewed and coded the literature. We used key realist review concepts (middle-range theory, demi-regularity, and context-mechanism-outcome configurations [CMO]) to analyze and synthesize the data, using the PR partnership as the main unit of analysis. Findings: From 7,167 abstracts and 591 full-text papers, we distilled for synthesis a final sample of twenty-three PR partnerships described in 276 publications. The link between process and outcome in these partnerships was best explained using the middle-range theory of partnership synergy, which demonstrates how PR can (1) ensure culturally and logistically appropriate research, (2) enhance recruitment capacity, (3) generate professional capacity and competence in stakeholder groups, (4) result in productive conflicts followed by useful negotiation, (5) increase the quality of outputs and outcomes over time, (6) increase the sustainability of project goals beyond funded time frames and during gaps in external funding, and (7) create system changes and new unanticipated projects and activities. Negative examples illustrated why these outcomes were not a guaranteed product of PR partnerships but were contingent on key aspects of context. Conclusions: We used a realist approach to embrace the heterogeneity and complexity of the PR literature. This theory-driven synthesis identified mechanisms by which PR may add value to the research process. Using the middle-range theory of partnership synergy, our review confirmed findings from previous PR reviews, documented and explained some negative outcomes, and generated new insights into the benefits of PR regarding conflicts and negotiation between stakeholders, program sustainability and advancement, unanticipated project activity, and the generation of systemic change. The construct of privilege has been undertheorized in the field of psychology. The discipline more commonly examines those who have been disenfranchised, marginalized, and discriminated against. However, psychologists concerned with social issues must also attend to questions of power and privilege. This article uses a collaborative research project with New York City youth and adults called Polling for Justice to engage in a discussion about privilege as it runs through three areas of that work: by design, in results, and through action. First, the paper argues that privilege is an epistemological standpoint of empirical psychology that has been disguised as objectivity. Next, that privilege is a set of material and social psychological conditions that protect adolescents as they develop, take risks, and mature. Finally, that those who hold privilege can embrace and model a sense of collective responsibility and solidarity, not retreat or passively empathize. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MACDONNELL JA. Nursing Inquiry 2011; 18: 313-324 Gender, sexuality and the participatory dimensions of a comparative life history policy study In this paper, I explore how a critical feminist lens was a crucial element in creating a participatory policy study which used a qualitative design and comparative life history methodology. This study focused on Canadian nurses' political practice related to advocacy for lesbian health. Findings show that the combination of the gender lens and life history approach offers potential to create knowledge in ways aligned with health-promoting and emancipatory outcomes. However, the nature of participation and interaction by researcher and participants is contexualized and contested given complex dynamics of power that shape all aspects of this doctoral study process. The critical feminist lens with its focus on reflexivity informed the content and process of knowledge production in this study and shaped key turning points: the ways in which this policy study was conceptualized, the choice of comparative life history methodology, ethical considerations, data collection and analysis and representation of findings. Life history is unlikely to be the methodology that first comes to mind when undertaking a policy study. Its historical roots are associated with biographical, oral history and narrative approaches, which typically aim to elicit understanding of lived experience. Yet, it was this very aspect, this focus on lived experience, which rendered life history methodology fitting as I contemplated how to examine the relationship between nurses and policy. I was interested in understanding nurses' political practice, how policy influenced nurses' capacity to advocate in their everyday lives, as well as nurses' impacts on policy processes and their larger social worlds. ABSTRACT Objectives: The paper describes the formative research conducted toward developing a health behavior change program for underserved pregnant women. It is provided as an example to guide researchers, academics, and practitioners on how to incorporate dissemination in all aspects of project planning and implementation. Design and Sample: A series of formative research was conducted, including an advisory council, expert interviews, 6 focus groups and 5 usability interviews with the target population ( n=53), key informant interviews, expert reviews of the pilot program, and a pilot test ( n=87). A total of 140 underserved pregnant women were recruited from Community Health Center Inc. in Connecticut. Results: The extensive formative research served to lay the foundation for the development of a healthy pregnancy behavior change program. The pilot test exemplified the feasibility and acceptability of the program. Conclusion: Successful adoption of interventions depends upon strong formative research, participatory research methods, interdisciplinary collaboration, and a commitment to dissemination from project inception. The development of the intervention discussed serves as a useful and practical example for others working in health care and behavioral medicine to improve the overall health and well-being of the underserved. Background / aim: Anecdotally, occupational therapists have identified problems of lack of professional recognition. This situation can mean that health service users' occupational needs are unmet and it can also cause difficulties for the profession of occupational therapy. Therefore, the study described in this paper aimed to better understand the issues of describing occupational therapy in a hospital setting and use this understanding to improve representations of occupational therapy. Methods: Fifteen occupational therapists engaged in two action research cycles of reflection-action-evaluation over an 18-month period in 2004 and 2005. Transcriptions of individual interviews and group discussions of the participating therapists formed the main dataset. Data were qualitatively analysed. Results: Participating therapists discovered that the occupational therapy profession is not accorded the regard that it deserves and that the profession is not well understood by others. In addition, occupational therapists may be contributing to this lack of awareness and regard through their own unconscious overly conformist behaviour that contributes to the presence of hegemony and professional image problems. Conclusion: Therapists are encouraged to engage in questioning of the taken-for-granted dominance of medical discourses upon their practice. Nursing Inquiry 2011; : 111-122 In this paper we present an action research process aimed at enhancing nurses' abilities to reflect on how to create good caring relationships with patients in advanced home care. Another aim was to examine the usefulness of an emerging theory, derived from results from a previous study. The request for this project to take place came from an advanced home care unit which had received complaints concerning patients in the palliative phase. The action performed was clinical supervision, structured around abilities that nurses need in order to create good caring relationships. During the action research process 42 narratives were analysed by the participating group. Three different data collections were carried out and analysed with qualitative content analysis in a triangulation procedure. The emerging theory was found to be useful and was also refined. The nurses reported that they felt strengthened and had developed their ability to reflect over good caring relationships. Some changes to practice were carried out by the participating nurses. Scholars have called for research approaches that actively include and are driven by people with intellectual disabilities, but the process of inclusive data analysis has been scarcely documented in the literature. This paper demonstrates the process university researchers and a group of self-advocates used to analyse and interpret data collected during a participatory action research (PAR) project to increase the group's capacity for self-advocacy. University researchers presented numerical data in three visual formats for analysis. Seventeen People First members analysed and interpreted the data using a modified focus group approach. All members participated in data analysis, but not all members participated in data interpretation. Members' interpretations suggest that the group felt an increased sense of empowerment and heightened awareness as a result of their increased capacity to run a meeting and involvement in the PAR cycle of action and reflection. Findings suggest that strategies such as visual representation of data, group analysis, and familiarity with data collection tools foster an inclusive process of analysis and interpretation. This paper outlines the role of the Design Research Society (DRS) and explores some of the emerging trends in design research as a field of academic inquiry through its biennial conferences. In doing so it gives some insight into the areas of research which might inform future studies from a perspective of an organization that seeks to support the peer review process both directly and indirectly through conferences and events, journal editing, and as a nominating body for national and international research evaluation panels. This paper describes the development of the Student Practice Evaluation Form Revised Edition (SPEF-R) Package. This assessment tool was based on the Student Placement Evaluation Form (SPEF), which was used nationally to evaluate student performance on professional practice placements. The SPEF-R was developed using an action research process through three cycles of action and reflection: (1) national consultation through telephone interviews with participants from three stakeholder groups (10 academics, 28 practice educators and 18 students); (2) development of the SPEF-R Package; and (3) feedback on draft, piloting and launch. In cycle 1, the most frequently identified strengths of the SPEF included its structure, comprehensiveness and clarity of expectations and utility in planning student placements. Overall, issues/concerns were less frequently identified and included length and the need for more training. In cycle 2, the SPEF-R package was developed, with key changes made to the SPEF and handbook in response to results and the enhancement of tools for providing feedback on placements and recording practice experience. Cycle 3 involved obtaining feedback on the draft, further revision and launching of the tool. Action research is useful for addressing practice issues in higher education. The development of the SPEF-R was grounded in contemporary views regarding the provision of formative feedback and based on stakeholders' views. However, further research is required to evaluate its properties as an assessment design. With the rapid increase of component outsourcing, suppliers play more important roles in New Product Development (NPD) projects. Previous research has shown that the selection of the appropriate supplier, as well as the choice of both the time and the degree of its involvement, have a major impact on NPD performance. However, the customer firms involved in this activity of collaborative design with suppliers express a need for methods and tools in order to effectively manage these particular relations. This paper presents a framework for the measurement of supplier's performance in the context of NPD projects. This framework has been supported by evidence from the literature and feedbacks from practitioners. It has been developed iteratively by application of an action research approach conducted within six industrial French companies. This development enabled the generation of a robust framework that allows: (a) identifying four main areas of performance expected by the customer in collaborative setting and (b) evaluating suppliers' development efforts throughout the NPD project with appropriate criteria for each stage of the project. Nursing Inquiry 2010; : 317-323 Although there is a trend towards developing health care in a patient-centred direction, changes are usually planned by the professionals without involving the patients. This paper presents an ongoing participatory action research project where patients with chronic renal failure, nurses at a specialist renal failure unit, a hospital manager and a researcher worked together to develop patient-centred care. The project combined the expertise of patients in their own experiences of living with a chronic condition with the professional expertise of nurses, the manager and the researcher. As the workload on the unit was uneven, the development work needed to be low in intensity but long-term. Based on a number of dialogues in focus groups, four main development areas were identified; access to test results, prerequisites for postponing the progress of the illness, general awareness and understanding of living with chronic renal failure, and family-focused care. A number of changes have been planned or implemented, such as developing a prototype for a web-based feed-back system, expanding patient education to newly diagnosed patients, steering the nurses' role towards a guiding and family-focused function, and planning a digital story-telling workshop. Nursing Inquiry 2010; : 336-345 In this paper, we discuss and analyse the strategies employed and challenges encountered when conducting a recent feminist participatory action research study with highly marginalized women who were illicit drug users in an inner city area of Vancouver, Canada. Through an analysis of the political economy of participatory praxis within current neoliberal contexts, we focus on three main areas: (i) reconceptualizing the pragmatics of participation; (ii) the microeconomic implications of participatory research, including ethical issues in payment for research participation; and (iii) the value and limits of using research as a tool for activism and empowerment. We conclude with a brief discussion of what we see to be some of the most salient social justice implications arising from feminist and participatory approaches to health research within neoliberal political spaces. Appreciating and developing compassionate care in an acute hospital setting caring for older people. Indeed there is much debate about how to enhance the caring cultures within which health care is provided. This paper argues that a proper systematic analysis of caring practice that works well in care environments may help us to move towards a realistic model for the future which supports staff, patients and families to give and receive compassionate care. The aim of the project was to explore, develop and articulate strategies that enhanced compassionate relationship centred care in an acute hospital setting, caring for older people. Appreciative action research informed the development and evaluation of the project. A range of data generation activities were used to examine what worked well. Following detailed analysis key processes emerged as being central to delivery of compassionate care. Specific action projects were implemented and evaluated to enhance these processes necessary for compassionate caring. Data from the project helped to articulate the special and often hidden acts that make up compassionate care. In relation to the process of 'knowing who I am and what matters to me' data provided evidence of the value of this process and the potential impact to care. In addition data about the process of doing appreciative action research helped to realise its application and relevance in the health care setting. Findings from this work suggest that there are a number of significant processes that help people to deliver compassionate care. These need to be articulated, shared more widely across practice, policy and education so that we can build on this excellent practice. Appreciative action research adopted in this project is an important methodology to supporting practitioners to identify what it is they do well and develop practice to try to make the best caring practice happen most of the time. Participation is often espoused as a strategy to promote inclusion, social justice and equality. Exactly how to facilitate participation in practice is often not explicated, nor are the challenges or issues highlighted. By drawing on interview data, the first aim of this paper is to identify the key barriers to participation in an organizational planning activity as experienced by 12 disabled and non-disabled staff and board members in a small community-based disability advocacy organization. The second aim is to draw upon Jim Ife's principles of participation to further analyse the factors that hinder and enable participation in organizations. Reported barriers to participation were categorized at individual, interpersonal and organizational levels of analysis, and included a lack of skills and competence, interpersonal conflicts, poor resourcing and ad hoc processes. The importance of understanding the dynamic interplay of individual and structural factors, valuing different forms of participation and having participatory structures and processes embedded in organizational settings are all highlighted. This study illustrates that, even in an organization that is specifically attuned to meeting the needs of disabled people, there is still considerable exclusion and institutional discrimination. Strategies to promote participation within an organizational context may include providing sufficient time for reflection and support, and opportunities for board members to learn how to take part in constructive planning activities and to develop their strengths. This paper explores the use of participatory action research (PAR) with children diagnosed with mental health issues. We argue that critiques from the sociology of childhood are useful for guiding PAR with children. First, we describe and critique values and assumptions that underlie research and practice with children who experience mental health issues. Second, we outline key qualities of the sociology of childhood, discuss their implications for PAR with children diagnosed with mental health issues, and touch on ethical issues. Five themes are explored: (a) values, (b) ontology/epistemology, (c) views about children, (d) agency/power in children’s relationships with adults, and (e) intervention/change focus. Participatory Action Research (PAR) with children and youth is at the intersection of child wellness and social inclusion. Exclusion and marginalization detract from personal and collective health. Inclusion, on the contrary, contributes to wellness. Hence, we should study inclusion and exclusion in the overall context of child wellness. This special issue offers a wealth of methodologies and lessons for fostering inclusion of young people through PAR. In an effort to synthesize my concerns with child wellness, inclusion, and the scholarly work of this special issue, this paper will (a) articulate the values underpinning the philosophy of social inclusion and child wellness, (b) suggest roles and responsibilities for putting these values into action, and (c) integrate the contributions of this special issue into the emerging framework for social inclusion and child wellness. In this paper we report on our use of a participatory research methodology to consult with children in the UK on how to improve pupil well-being in secondary schools, framed within the wider social policy context of healthy schools. We worked with children on the selection of our research methods and sought to voice the views of children to a local education authority to improve the design of school environments. The consultation process ultimately failed not because the children were unforthcoming with their views on either methods or on well-being in schools, but because of difficulties in how their views were received by adults. We show how the socio-economic, cultural and political context in which those difficulties were set might have led to the eventual break down of the consultation process, and we draw out a number of possible implications for consultative and participatory work with children in school settings. Although participatory action research has become an increasingly popular method with youth, involving them in problem identification, analysis, intervention, and/or feedback, few PAR projects tend to involve youth in all of these phases—particularly the data analysis phase. Yet involvement in the data analysis phase of a research effort can help to promote critical awareness of the targeted issues, potentially increasing the effectiveness of subsequent PAR stages. In addition, although many YPAR projects aim to promote the critical consciousness of their youth participants, some projects struggle to promote this awareness, often because the methods used are not well matched to the developmental needs of their participants. In this paper we present the ReACT Method, a PAR approach specifically designed to promote local knowledge production and critical consciousness by engaging youth in the problem identification, data analysis, and feedback stages of research. Given the lack of attention in the literature to the methods used for engaging youth in these processes, we provide detailed descriptions of the methods we developed to engage youth in problem identification and qualitative data analysis. This paper reports on the findings of an action research project aimed at building resilience in young people in a residential children's home. Daniel and Wassell's six domains for promoting resilience in young people were adopted as a conceptual framework to guide the residential social workers as they engaged in successive cycles of reflection and action. Two core areas were explored: (a) the approaches deemed to be helpful in building resilience; and (b) the background factors that enabled and constrained the social workers' interventions. The findings showed that the participants acted creatively to use resources and tools both within the system of State-mandated parenting and the informal, meaning-oriented world of the young people. This paper presents experiences and reflections on the use of a participatory research methodology under the difficult conditions of a war situation in northern Uganda. We draw from two complimentary approaches in action research to explain our methodology while doing research on the reintegration of formerly abducted children. First, the experience oriented approach, which emphasizes the need to articulate experience as a basis for learning and knowledge. Second, the exemplary participatory approach which highlights the importance of enhancing empowerment and the need to find solutions for social problems. We find these two approaches useful for doing action research in a conflict area because of their emphasis on experience and empowerment respectively. In our research, experience is important because of the children's encounter with the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) rebels that both needs to be understood and justifies reintegration. On the otherhand, empowerment is important for our assumption that the children's experience and encounter with the LRA has disempowering effects on them. We demonstrate the use of the approaches in our research by enhancing participation, balancing power relations and being aware of ethical issues while at the same time attempting to make the research valid inspite of the challenges. Many companies face the challenge of outsourcing to low-cost countries. Still, many managers seem to be uncertain about (1) which inputs should be selected for this exercise; (2) which countries are preferred; and (3) whether to deal directly with suppliers or through a local distributor or agent. This paper deals with these three aspects in offering a practical and tested method, derived from theory. In each of four steps, inputs are filtered out that are less suitable for sourcing from low-cost countries. Step 1 clusters all of the hundreds of inputs into 50–90 product families. A portfolio analysis of the resulting product families in Step 2 enables differentiation in the nature of goods and services acquired and their supplier relationship characteristics. In this step, unique products and low volume, low-value inputs are filtered out. In Step 3, managers score the remaining product families on operationalized process- and product characteristics. Based on these scores, product families are assigned to four categories: (1) “Global Sourcing” or direct offshoring; (2) “Source Global, Buy Local” or indirect offshoring — for example produced in China but bought through a local agent/distributor; (3) “Buy Regional” or nearshoring; and (4) “Vicinity Buying.” Step 4 compares the present total costs of product families with the potential total costs after a switch toward the proposed areas. A case study revealed a significant potential for reduction in total costs for selected product families. In practice, the method serves three ends: (1) it clarifies the various product- and process characteristics that are perceived as important by stakeholders involved; (2) it guides the selection process of potential product families and potential areas in a structured way; and (3) it makes visible the financial results of alternatives to the present way of sourcing. Our project first explored the patterns of disempowerment within 113 Italian families facing the problem of a heavy alcohol or drug user in the family. It then provided therapeutic interventions for the members of a further fifty-two families, and thirdly, as a part of the diffusion of the results, it provided brief training for 1,011 professionals supplying services for those suffering from alcohol and drug addiction. Research undertaken in the UK, Mexico and Australia (Copello, Templeton, & Velleman, 2006; Orford et al., 2005a; Orford, Templeton, Velleman, & Copello, 2005b; Velleman & Templeton, 2003) on the impact of substance misuse on families, and on the development of effective interventions to assist those families, supplied the models for this participatory research in Italy. This article discusses the mobilization of health professionals in developing a participatory project within a cross-cultural framework, focusing on research that involved more than 70 researchers and other professionals all over Italy. Research team discussions, peer validation of gathered data and reflexivity all had a significant role. The paper illustrates various issues, which are often not explicitly mentioned in research reports, related to recruitment, cooperation between researchers, interactions between researchers and participants, information about decision-making and the actual modalities of execution of the project. Moreover, the careful descriptions of qualitative research principles within the action research approach and a mixed methods design should enhance the research competencies of psychologists and social scientists involved in the community. In this paper we describe a UK-based participatory action research project that looks beyond the discourse of tolerance to investigate and challenge heteronormative processes in primary schools through reflective action research. This 28-month ESRC-funded project supports 15 primary teachers working in schools in three regions of the UK to develop action research projects that address lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality in their own schools and classrooms. In this paper we will examine how the original principles on which the project design was based have manifested themselves throughout the course of the project, drawing upon examples of classroom practice and reflective discussions among project team members. We will explore how designing intentionally for collective participation has produced spaces for people to do and think in ways that have not only gone beyond what we imagined but have also challenged and sometimes contradicted our own ways of thinking. Aim: The aim of this paper is twofold: to conceptualize tensions related to the academization of nursing, and to analyse a case study, describing how such tensions were dealt with in the process of establishing a new nursing department. Background: This paper represents the first stage of a case study of the transformation of a hospital-based nursing school into an academic programme, carried out as a joint venture between a local hospital school and a college in northern Israel. Methods: This paper is based on action research. The participants were 19 members of the new academic faculty and 3 members of an action research center. Findings: The three inter-related tensions surfaced in the research process are: (1) the status of nursing and nurses, (2) the role of research and critical thinking in nursing education and practice, and (3) the characteristics of students, who should enrol in and graduate from nursing programmes, or in other words, the character of the 'ideal nurse'. Conclusions: An action research process enables new teams to put tensions on the table so they can be openly addressed through ongoing reflection, inquiry, learning, evaluation and redesign. In this paper we discuss, on the basis of system theory, the rigour–relevance gap in management research and the proposal to overcome it. From a system theory perspective, social systems are self-referential or autopoietic, which means that communication elements of one system, such as science, cannot be authentically integrated into communication of other systems, such as the system of a business organization. Social systems can only irritate – provoke – each other, i.e. alter conditions in such a way that other systems are forced to respond. Because of the differences between management science and practice it is impossible to assess relevance of research output within the system of science. On the basis of our analysis we show that neither action research nor Mode 2 research nor recent approaches to collaborative research can succeed in producing research that is rigorous as well as relevant. Researchers and practitioners cannot collaboratively produce research, they can only irritate each other. However, sometimes irritations or provocations turn out inspiring. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Approximately 16% of consumers are secluded during an inpatient admission. Despite the harmful psychological consequences resulting from the use of physical force, restraint, control, and temporary sequestration of therapeutic communication, there is little evidence of nursing practices to support consumers who are secluded. This paper will outline the findings from an action research project examining post-seclusion debriefing practice. A series of focus groups was undertaken with mental health nurses (MHN) and consumer consultants (CC) to investigate current practice, identify consumer/clinician preferences, and scope future practice possibilities. The findings suggest that CC need assistance in dealing with the negative feelings evoked by seclusion. MHN use a range of approaches for debriefing; however, these sometimes do not meet consumer preferences. MHN focus on explaining why seclusion happened and how to avoid it. While mitigation is a critical issue, CC want more emotional support from debriefing. MHN saw the possibility of using the debriefing to support consumers' transit from seclusion to high-dependency status and then to low-dependency status. Opinions raised regarding the potential for CC to have a role in debriefing were divided. The findings will be used to inform the development of a consumer debriefing training program for MHN and CC. Aim. This paper aims to present and reflect on the process of practical and theoretical change in an action research project in which the issue of social rehabilitation was developed. Background. Action research is a useful method to change and advance practice. Consequently, grounded knowledge, which forms the basis of the practical change, is developed. 'Social rehabilitation' was the field of clinical practice which needed enhancement as the literature lacked nurse-led social rehabilitation programmes in the neurology field. Design. This was a cyclic action research project. Methods. The project took place in a highly specialised hospital in Spain and aimed to promote social life of neurological patients and relatives through the planning, implementation and evaluation of a nurse-led social rehabilitation programme based on individual needs. In this project, which lasted 30 months, multiple triangulation of sources and methods was applied. Thirty-seven nurses participated and 22 and 18 patients and their relatives constituted a baseline and an intervention group, respectively. Results. Several issues were carefully treated in this action research project to develop practical and theoretical knowledge about social rehabilitation: the validity and reliability of the project, the work organisation of the wards, the nurses' attitudes towards new care, the researcher-participant relationship and the controversial role of professionals in social rehabilitation. Conclusion. The nurses' emancipation in the process of practice change led to practical and theoretical assimilation of social rehabilitation. Intensive work on practitioners' attitudes and the provision of empirical evidence were key interventions to foster controversial roles and enhance services.Relevance to clinical practice.* Details about the process of change of nursing practice in response to clients' needs have been provided.* Some reflections about how to integrate social care and knowledge about social rehabilitation in clinical daily practice are made. This paper describes a collaborative action research approach used to explore peer observation of teaching (POT) within the online environment. Although POT has become familiar in face-to-face teaching contexts, little is understood of its potential role in online settings. We conducted ‘virtual’ focus groups to explore the experience and views of 28 teachers and subjected our data to a thematic analysis. This informed the implementation of an innovative programme of POT, ‘Peer-to-peer Reflection on Pedagogical Practice’ (PROPP) among tutors of a Web-based MSc in International Primary Health Care at University College London. Modeled on an action learning set, the programme encourages collaborative reflection on teaching practices, based on participants' specific examples of online teaching. The PROPP model is consistent with Quality Enhancement, which we distinguish from Quality Assurance. Here, we describe the implementation of the PROPP programme within an action research framework and identify the factors that we consider critical to the success of peer observation within online courses. We highlight examples of aspects of teaching that have been discussed within the PROPP programme and offer suggestions of the kinds of evidence that could be incorporated into a portfolio to demonstrate the effectiveness of such an initiative. Methodologies for understanding business processes and their information systems (IS) are often criticized, either for being too imprecise and philosophical (a criticism often levied at softer methodologies) or too hierarchical and mechanistic (levied at harder methodologies). The process-oriented holonic modelling methodology combines aspects of softer and harder approaches to aid modellers in designing business processes and associated IS. The methodology uses holistic thinking and a construct known as the holon to build process descriptions into a set of models known as a holarchy. This paper describes the methodology through an action research case study based in a large design and manufacturing organization. The scientific contribution is a methodology for analysing business processes in environments that are characterized by high complexity, low volume and high variety where there are minimal repeated learning opportunities, such as large IS development projects. Title. Multi-faceted palliative care intervention: aged care nurses’ and care assistants’ perceptions and experiences. Aim. This paper is a report of a study to describe residential aged care nurses’ and care assistants’ perceptions of a multi-faceted palliative care intervention to identify potential areas to be addressed during subsequent action research phases. Background. Action research was used to enhance the delivery of a palliative approach in residential aged care. The chronic care model guided the development of a multi-faceted intervention. This involved the: (1) establishment of a ‘link nurse’ role; (2) learning and development strategies for nurses, care assistants and general practitioners; (3) use of multi-disciplinary team meetings; and (4) access to specialist consultation. Method. A purposive sample ( n = 28) of aged care nurses and care assistants participated in a series of four focus groups conducted in July 2005. Thematic content analysis of the transcripts was performed. Findings. Four themes emerged: (1) targeted education can make a difference; (2) a team approach is valued; (3) clinical assessment tools are helpful; and (4) using the right language is essential. Participants described increased understanding of palliative care concepts, enhanced competencies, greater confidence to deliver palliative care and a desire to adopt a multi-disciplinary approach to care planning. Conclusion. Sustaining a culture that is committed to ongoing learning and development interventions and creating multi-disciplinary teams in the aged care setting is critical to embedding a palliative approach. This paper demonstrates the value of participatory action research (PAR) and promotes its use by nurses in clinical practice. PAR has gained popularity in nursing and health-care research, offering a way of developing practice-based knowledge that can improve nursing care. PAR is described in detail: what PAR is, how to use PAR in clinical practice, and the steps in the PAR cycle as applied during an exemplar study in which nurses used PAR to address their concerns and develop, implement and evaluate a model of care in an acute medical ward. Aim. This paper is a report of a study to explore well child nurses' perceptions of outcomes resulting from the use of solution-focused conversations in their telephone consultations with clients. Background. Well child nurses (health visitors) in some services provide a separate telephone consultation service for parents who need immediate advice or are unable to visit the clinic. As well as purely physical issues suggesting infant pathology, these consultations address a range of other concerns relating to parenting and child behaviour. The standard problem-solving approach used to address physical issues is less effective for various non-physical concerns, where different communication strategies may be helpful. Method. In this qualitative, action-oriented study, a small group of well child telenurses in New Zealand was introduced to a specific communication strategy, called 'solution-focused conversations', during 2005. They applied this approach in their practice and then reflected together on their experiences in focus groups. Findings. The nurses considered that the solution-focused conversations enabled clients to: recognize the nature of the parenting issue of concern that had motivated their call; identify more effective parenting practices to address specific issues with their child; increase their confidence in their own parenting capabilities. Conclusion. This study suggested the value of learning a specific communication strategy for the practice of a group of well child telenurses. Solution-focused conversation is a suitable approach for the single, relatively short, interactions involved in telephone nursing. This paper reports a small-scale pilot study to introduce flexible observation of patients in an acute psychiatric clinical area where nurses have increased autonomy to make such decisions. The Clinical Resource and Audit Group document 'Engaging People: Observation of People with Acute Mental Health Problems: A Good Practice Statement' outlines very clearly the observation levels that should be used in acute psychiatric areas in Scotland. It also states clearly who is responsible for conducting different parts of the observation process and how such observation procedures should be conducted. The available literature recommends three observation levels with engagement and considers that intermittent or time period checks are unsafe. A small-scale action research pilot study was conducted over a period of 6 months with individual incidents (n = 57) of patients requiring increased or decreased observation levels being included in the study. There were no exclusion criteria and this was a total sample in one clinical area. The results were analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences v.14.0 using non-parametric statistics and chi square. The results indicated there has been a shift away from doctors deciding on the levels of observation towards multidisciplinary or nursing decisions regarding this aspect of care. During the pilot, there was a gradual shift away from high levels of observation. Those that were placed on increased levels of observation were on them for a much shorter time than previously and staff generally found the new recording system to be more practical. There were a number of 'sub-levels' of general and constant observation in use. Over the years, recording has suffered from incomplete information and this pilot is no different with 56% (n = 34) of the recording sheets had at least one section of clinical information incomplete or not filled in at all. Despite the guidelines and the subsequent training of staff in the clinical area, some nursing staff were not participating as fully as they might in the decision-making process. Fewer patients were being placed on increased observation levels. Those that were placed on observation were on them for a much shorter time than previously and staff generally found the new recording system to be more practical. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper describes the results of a preliminary trial of a system of mental health nursing, the Partnership in Coping system, based on the subjective experiences of the participating mental health nurses and service users. The community mental health study involved action research, with data being collected through individual interviews and focus groups. Data analysis, using thematic content analysis, resulted in the emergence of two main dimensions. These dimensions are centred around a shift in responsibility from the service to the service user, and the authentication and clarification of the roles of the nurse and the service user. This paper describes the challenges and benefits of an action-research project with a Nashville-based nonprofit human service organization. In our view, outmoded human service organizations are in serious need of innovation to promote psychological and physical wellness, prevention of social problems, empowerment, and social justice. This project aims to develop and evaluate value-based organizational processes and outcomes designed to transform human services. Although the goal of moving human services from ameliorative to transformative approaches is invigorating, our efforts have revealed expected and unexpected barriers to this process of change. Two main barriers are a strong cultural current working against change and irregular pacing of the change efforts. Positive outgrowths of the project include a new organizational philosophy that includes attention to issues of justice and equality, and changing individual and organizational beliefs and practices.
