ABSTRACT Sediment movement during erosion, transport and deposition greatly affects the ecosystem of river basins. However, there is presently no consensus as to whether particular river basins act as carbon dioxide (CO2) sources or sinks related to these processes. This paper introduces a rule-of-thumb coordinate system based on sediment delivery ratio (SDR) and soil humin content (SHC) in order to evaluate the net effect of soil erosion, sediment transport and deposition on CO2 flux in river basins. The SDR-SHC system delineates CO2 source and sink areas, and further divides the sink into strong and weak areas according to the world-average line. The Yellow River Basin, most severely suffering soil erosion in the world, only appears to be a weak erosion-induced CO2 sink in this system. The average annual CO2 sequestration is ~0·235 Mt from 1960 to 2008, a relatively small value considering its 3·1% contribution to the World's sediment discharge. The temporal analysis shows that the Yellow River Basin was once a source in the 1960s, but changed its role to become a weak sink in the past 40 years due to both anthropogenic and climatic influences. The spatial analysis identifies the middle sub-basin as the main source region, and the lower as the main sink. For comparison, sediment-movement-related CO2 fluxes of eight other major basins in four continents are examined. It is found that the six basins considered in the Northern Hemisphere appear to be sinks, while the other two in the Southern Hemisphere act as sources. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. This paper examines long-term eddy covariance data from 18 European and 17 North American and Asian forest, wetland, tundra, grassland, and cropland sites under non-water-stressed conditions with an empirical rectangular hyperbolic light response model and a single layer two light-class carboxylase-based model. Relationships according to ecosystem functional type are demonstrated between empirical and physiological parameters, suggesting linkages between easily estimated parameters and those with greater potential for process interpretation. Relatively sparse documentation of leaf area index dynamics at flux tower sites is found to be a major difficulty in model inversion and flux interpretation. Therefore, a simplification of the physiological model is carried out for a subset of European network sites with extensive ancillary data. The results from these selected sites are used to derive a new parameter and means for comparing empirical and physiologically based methods across all sites, regardless of ancillary data. The results from the European analysis are then compared with results from the other Northern Hemisphere sites and similar relationships for the simplified process-based parameter were found to hold for European, North American, and Asian temperate and boreal climate zones. We suggest that the spread of angiosperm's in the Cretaceous was facilitated by novel fire regimes. Angiosperms were capable of high productivity and therefore accumulated flammable biomass ('fuel) more rapidly than their predecessors. They were capable of rapid reproduction, allowing populations to spread despite frequent disturbance. We evaluate the evidence for physical conditions conducive to fires in the Cretaceous. These included high temperatures, seasonally dry climate and higher atmospheric oxygen than current levels. We evaluate novel properties of angiosperm's that contributed to rapid biomass accumulation, and to their ability to thrive in frequently disturbed environments. We also review direct evidence for Cretaceous fires. Charcoal mesofossils are common in Cretaceous deposits of the Northern Hemisphere. Inertinite, the charcoal component of coal, is common throughout the Cretaceous and into the Palaeocene, but declined steeply from the Eocene when angiosperm-dominated forests became widespread. Direct and indirect evidence is consistent with angiosperms initiating novel fire regimes, promoting angiosperm spread in the Cretaceous. Several traits are consistent with frequent surface fires. We suggest that forest was slow to develop until the Eocene, when fire activity dropped to very low levels. The causes and consequences of fires in the deep past warrant greater attention. The California Institute of Technology/Jet Propulsion Laboratory two-dimensional (2-D), three-dimensional (3-D) GEOS-Chem, and 3-D MOZART-2 chemistry and transport models (CTMs), driven respectively by NCEP2, GEOS-4, and NCEP1 reanalysis data, have been used to simulate upper tropospheric CO2 from 2000 to 2004. Model results of CO2 mixing ratios agree well with monthly mean aircraft observations at altitudes between 8 and 13 km (Matsueda et al., 2002) in the tropics. The upper tropospheric CO2 seasonal cycle phases are well captured by the CTMs. Model results have smaller seasonal cycle amplitudes in the Southern Hemisphere compared with those in the Northern Hemisphere, which are consistent with the aircraft data. Some discrepancies are evident between the model and aircraft data in the midlatitudes, where models tend to underestimate the amplitude of CO2 seasonal cycle. Comparison of the simulated vertical profiles of CO2 between the different models reveals that the convection in the 3-D models is likely too weak in boreal winter and spring. Model sensitivity studies suggest that convection mass flux is important for the correct simulation of upper tropospheric CO2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
