Abstract The aim of this paper is to evaluate (i) the relevance of currently proposed measures of competitive intensity to elevated CO2 studies by means of an example analysis, hypothesizing that competitive intensity is increased under elevated CO2 ; and (ii) an alternative method for predicting species performance in mixtures from monocultures. Relative competition intensity (RCI), relative physiological performance and normalized ecological performance were used to characterize the competitive ability of two grasses (Danthonia richardsonii Cashmore, Phalaris aquatica L.) and two legumes (Lotus pedunculatus Cav., Trifolium repens L.) grown in monocultures and mixtures of the four species along a N gradient under conditions of ambient and elevated CO2 . Relative competition intensity could not be used to predict competitive outcomes in mixtures under conditions of elevated CO2 because it failed to account for changes in the size of interspecific differences along the N gradient and between CO2 concentrations. Relative physiological performance and relative ecological performance were more useful for investigating biomass production in mixtures and to predict species performance in mixtures from their performance in monocultures. Both indices of relative performance showed an increase in competitive intensity under elevated CO2 conditions. They also showed a decrease in competitive intensity with increasing N supply over most of the range of N supply, but a reversal of that trend at high levels of N supply. It is highly desired to achieve controllable product selectivity in CO2 hydrogenation. Herein, we report light‐induced switching of reaction pathways of CO2 hydrogenation towards CH3OH production over actomically dispersed Co decorated Pt@UiO‐66‐NH2. CO, being the main product in the reverse water gas shift (RWGS) pathway under thermocatalysis condition, is switched to CH3OH via the formate pathway with the assistance of light irradiation. Impressively, the space‐time yield of CH3OH in photo‐assisted thermocatalysis (1916.3 μmol gcat−1 h−1) is about 7.8 times higher than that without light at 240 °C and 1.5 MPa. Mechanism investigation indicates that upon light irradiation, excited UiO‐66‐NH2 can transfer electrons to Pt nanoparticles and Co sites, which can efficiently catalyze the critical elementary steps (i.e. CO2‐to‐*HCOO conversion), thus suppressing the RWGS pathway to achieve a high CH3OH selectivity. Direct and interactive effects of CO2 and light on tree phytochemistry and insect fitness parameters were examined through experimental manipulations of plant growth conditions and performance ofinsect bioassays. Three species of deciduous trees (quaking aspen, Populus tremuloides; paper birch, Betula papyrifera; sugar maple, Acersaccharum) were grown under ambient (387 8 mu L/L) and elevated (696 2 mu L/L) levels of atmospheric CO2, with low and high light availability (375 and 855 mu mol ? m-2 ? s-1 at solar noon). Effects on the population and individual performance of a generalist phytophagous insect, the white-marked tussock moth (Orgyia leucostigma) were evaluated. Caterpillars were reared on experimental trees for the duration of the larval stage, and complementary short-term (fourth-instar) feeding trials were conducted with insects fed detached leaves. Phytochemical analyses demonstrated strong effects of both CO2 and light on all foliar nutritional variables (water, starch and nitrogen). For all species, enriched CO2 decreased water content and increased starch content, especially under high light conditions. High CO2 availability reduced levels of foliar nitrogen, but effects were species specific and most pronounced for high light aspen and birch. Analyses of secondary plant compounds revealed that levels of phenolic glycosides (salicortin and tremulacin) in aspen and condensed tannins in birch and maple were positively influenced by levels of both CO2 and light. In contrast, levels of condensed tannins in aspen were primarily affected by light, whereas levels of ellagitannins and gallotanninsin maple responded to light and CO2, respectively.
