This paper investigates the asymmetric effects of fossil fuels, foreign direct investment (FDI), and globalization on the ecological footprint (EFP) in Mexico from 1975 to 2020. To this end, the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL), Nonlinear Autoregressive Distributed Lag (NARDL), and the wavelet coherence approach are conducted. Based on the outcomes of the ARDL method, economic growth and fossil fuel consumption lead to ecological degradation, while foreign direct investment improves environmental conditions. Globalization has no impact on the environment. The NARDL approach illustrates that a positive shock to fossil fuels, FDI, and globalization degrades the environment. The wavelet coherence results emphasize the adverse environmental influence of economic growth and fossil fuels. These results imply that the Mexican government should conduct its economic expansion considering the principle of sustainable development. In this context, policymakers should propagate carbon taxes and similar instruments to promote clean energy sources that can replace fossil fuels and are compatible with sustainable development policies. Mexico is the leading mango-exporting country in the world. In this global commodity chain there is an important participation by small-scale farmers whose products end up in US supermarkets. This paper analyses the linkages between the agriculture sector in a developing country and the global agro-food system. Drawing on the development geography approach and the global commodity-chain perspective, the effects and responses of global processes on local development are analysed by examining the relations between fruit export companies, local growers and consumer markets. Our case study is of small farmers (ejidatarios) who grow mangos in one of Mexico's main export-oriented agricultural areas, the Bahía de Banderas Valley, and whose situation is similar to other small-scale producers of non-traditional products. The study examines the impact on the farmers of structural adjustment policies that have been implemented in Mexico since the mid-1980s. Economic internationalisation and globalising processes have a dialectical appearance. The trend towards homogenisation in an economic, social, political and cultural sense will meet with regionally generated production, innovation and knowledge systems that, while responding to these external influences, develop their own manifestation of the global-local nexus. The developments in Mexico's North East, with the industrial city of Monterrey as its core centre, present an example of the impact of these forces. Until 1988 Monterrey industries were operating on a protected domestic market. This situation changed with the opening up of the Mexican economy in that year and the signing of the NAFTA agreement with the USA and Canada in 1993. This paper analyses this insertion in the world economy and the regional response, first on an institutional level where the special brand of family capitalism — as found in Monterrey — is confronting the exigencies of international competitiveness and the organisation of business practice it requires. Second, on a sub-regional level, we observe the reaffirmation of regional idiosyncracies in the social, political and cultural sphere. John King’s introduction to this section surveys the development of Latin American film studies in the UK over the past 25 years. All three papers explore the interplay between local and global factors in the development of Mexican cinema. Andrea Noble introduces the work of Carlos Monsiváis and discusses the role that early and Golden Age cinema played in the processes of modernisation in Mexico. Carlos Monsiváis pays particular attention to the image of the city in recent Mexican cinema, exploring the use of language and the depiction of sex. Geoffrey Kantaris offers a number of theoretical pathways into an exploration of contemporary cinema in Mexico, analysing how ideas of place and identity are disrupted by the crisis of the nation state in a globalised, postmodern world. Studies regarding multilingualism have shown that literacy in two languages facilitates the acquisition of a third. This paper compares the progress of Mexican bilingual indigenous language/Spanish-proficient students to Mexican monolingual Spanish-proficient students in their university level English classes. Two major research strategies are presented: (1) qualitative analysis based on a student questionnaire, and (2) inferential quantitative analysis of bilingual and monolingual students' grade averages in academic and language classes. Results show that bilingualism in an indigenous language positively affects the acquisition of English language skills. These results suggest that through language maintenance and development, indigenous communities in Mexico may be able to benefit from globalization, or at least withstand its negative effects. Los estudios con respecto al multilingüismo han demostrado que el conocimiento en dos idiomas facilita la adquisición de un tercero. Este artículo compara el progreso de estudiantes cuya lengua origen es la indígena mexicana y quienes además hablan español, con el desempeño de los estudiantes españoles monolingües mexicanos, en sus clases de inglés a nivel universitario. Se presentan dos estrategias de investigación importantes: (1) Un análisis cualitativo basado en un cuestionario aplicado a los estudiantes, y (2) Un análisis cuantitativo inferencial de las calificaciones obtenidas por los estudiantes monolingües y bilingües en sus clases de inglés. Los resultados demuestran que el bilingüismo en una lengua indígena afecta positivamente a la adquisición de conocimientos lingüísticos en la lengua inglesa. Estos resultados sugieren que con mantenimiento y el apropiado desarrollo de la lengua, las comunidades indígenas en México podrían beneficiarse de la globalización, o por lo menos soportar sus efectos negativos. The present article examines continuity and change in views on gender in a Maya community before and after a communication tower was installed in 2010. Interview data were collected in 2009 when participants were adolescents (n = 80) and then again in 2015 when they were young adults (n = 68). Values and beliefs for gender were measured using vignettes that were created through previous fieldwork (Manago, 2014). Young adults were also asked about their use of mobile phones and social media, and completed a social network mapping activity (Antonucci, 1986). Results showed continuities across time in self‐expression values for gender roles and relations, which was predicted by high school attendance during adolescence. Young adult men and those who had been to high school were more likely to use the internet and Facebook. Internet use did not predict values beyond the effects of schooling; however, it predicted greater proportions of nonkin in participants' social network maps, which predicted greater self‐expression values for gender relations. Qualitative analyses of participants' emic perspectives of the affordances of communication technologies illustrate how education and cultural values shape perceptions of the opportunities and risks of media use. After the Mexican Revolution of 1910, a peasant community of indigenous heritage retained a certain autonomy central to perpetuating its traditional agroecosystems. In great measure, this autonomy resulted from the cacique's opposition to the implementation of modern transportation systems. Thus, the region's physical isolation is deceptive but endured until the 1980s. The local leader impeded incorporation into wider markets, thwarting globalization. The community was articulated with the larger society through mechanisms which conserved its semi-autonomy, revitalized its pre-Revolution ties to the traditional regional market and political/administrative center, and promoted life styles of peasants with fewer resources who complemented open fields of basic subsistence crops with diverse fruit orchards, two traditional agroecosystems widespread in central Mexico, and who used sustainable water management practices to irrigate the orchards. This article provides an assessment of the contribution of exports to the Mexican economy during the first globalisation. This implies revisiting conventional explanations based on the tradition of structuralism and dependency theory, using a new, complete set of data on Mexico's foreign trade, and evaluating the direct contribution as well as the indirect benefits provided by export activities, through mechanisms that linked foreign trade to the rest of the economy. Mexico's double transition-democratisation and internationalisation-offers a good case study to analyse the interaction between internationalisation processes and domestic developments during transitions to democracy. This article explains how the specific way in which Mexico linked with North America worked as a causal mechanism during the country's democratisation. Based on an empirical analysis of articles published between 1987 and 2006 in three major Mexican sociological journals, my research traces the continuities and discontinuities in the study of the alleged malfunctioning of Mexican society. The study of how sociologists represented Mexican society has revealed several discursive dynamics. The traditional economic and political perspectives blaming social problems on elites predominate. Studies of electoral system flaws, political contention, lacklustre democracy in unions, and union collusion with industrial capitalism abound. This article examines the impact of international languages of diversity on Mexican official texts that advocate the adoption of a utopia of cultural diversity as a new way of imagining the national community. The analysis is supplemented by an ethnographic example which illustrates the utilisation of such language by indigenous peoples in order to negotiate a better position in this new configuration. Against the “post-national” perspective dominant in globalisation literature, the official and popular discourses described in the case study show that although nation states are obliged to compromise with supranational forces and institutions, the principal site of struggles to define collective subjectivities and positions is still located at national level. These struggles reflect the clash between the utopia of a homogeneous nation and that of a multicultural nation. This clash is the site of tensions and negotiations between three types of actor: international agencies, governing elites, and indigenous groups. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article I assert that global cities are critical nodes in Global Commodity Chains because it is from them that producer services are provided. I explore forward linkages of producer service firms in Mexico City, showing that there are important service flows to companies responsible for the globalization of the ‘Mexican’ economy. Based on this finding I also indicate reasons why Mexico City is ‘on the map’ of global cities and of Global Commodity Chains. I argue that both access to local knowledge and close contact to clients are key factors. A third issue dealt with is the position of Mexico City in the geography of governance of commodity chains. The analysis suggests that it is useful to break up global city functions into the management of the world economy and into its command and control, because Mexico City is certainly a place for the former, while the scope of influence exercised from the city is rather limited. Drawing on a rich source of urban labour market data, the Mexican National Urban Employment Survey of 1998, this article addresses the question of how dissimilar export-oriented industries shape urban labour markets, particularly with respect to women workers. It compares Ciudad Juárez, which has an economy based on global assembly production, and Cancún, whose economy is based on international tourism. Employing economic base theory and location quotients, the analysis isolates the impact of the export sectors on the local labour markets. Results show that global assembly and international tourism encourage a mix of occupational and income prospects for both men and women in each of these Mexican cities. Female employment tends to be concentrated in the export-oriented sector in both cases, but the types of occupational and income opportunities therein vary. Overall, the analysis challenges common exploitation arguments that tend to stress the universally shared deleterious working conditions and low wages that result from global integration and export-led industrialisation in contemporary Latin America. It suggests that we pay closer attention to the diverse nature of outward oriented industries, which will tend to differentiate the labour market implications of increasing economic globalisation.
