Objective: There is an ongoing effort to enhance the welfare and survival of black bass Micropterus spp. released after angling tournaments. Live‐well additives are substances added to live‐well water that are intended to help fish recover during retention. Aside from claims made by manufacturers, little information is available on the additives' effectiveness for recovery or their potential welfare consequences. Thus, our objective was to test whether live‐well additives influence fish physiology and postrelease behavior. Methods: Two techniques were used to test the influence of live‐well additives on the welfare of angled Largemouth Bass M. nigricans (LMB) held in a live well with lake water (control) or one of three additive products. Prior to fish release, pop‐off biologging packages were fastened to a subset of LMB to monitor behavior (locomotor activity, depth, and water temperature use) for 5 min (n = 61) and blood samples were taken from another subset of LMB to assess their physiology (n = 47). We obtained baseline (n = 9) blood samples from LMB immediately upon capture. Result: Regardless of treatment, postrelease locomotor activity increased with increasing time spent in the live wells. Live‐well additive type alone did not have an influence on the postrelease locomotor activity. Further, LMB retained in the live wells had greater blood glucose and lactate concentrations relative to baseline LMB, suggesting that fish did not recover from angling during retention in live wells. Other than elevated plasma chloride levels of LMB held in one of the live‐well additives, plasma chloride and sodium concentrations for LMB in live wells with additives and for those in the control live well did not differ, suggesting that the LMB had not recovered while retained. Conclusion: Our results suggest that the live‐well additives tested did not enhance recovery or reduce confinement stress of LMB retained in live wells under the tested circumstances. Additional research on live‐well additives is needed given that our findings did not align with the claims made by the manufacturers of these products. We suggest that anglers intending to retain fish in live wells should use fresh, well‐oxygenated lake water. Artificial hollows are commonly used to mitigate the scarcity of den and nest sites that threatens fauna species globally, but there is a risk that these do not provide suitable microclimates for the populations they are intended to support. We monitored temperature, humidity and occupancy in artificial dens (nest boxes and chainsaw‐carved cavities) provided for the critically endangered Leadbeater's possum (Gymnobelideus leadbeateri) in south‐eastern Australian forests. Monitoring occurred over both winter and summer in five habitat types spanning a broad elevational gradient (110–1580 m asl). We then used a biophysical model to explore the physiological consequences of the den temperatures recorded, and the potential effectiveness of behavioural strategies in reducing thermoregulatory costs. Monitoring revealed that nest box temperatures tracked ambient over both seasons, ranging from −5.5°C to 48.5°C, while chainsaw hollows provided more stable internal conditions. However, we found that inferences regarding the thermal suitability of artificial dens were site‐specific, and dependent upon habitat type, season and assumptions around behavioural strategies. During winter, behaviours such as the construction of large, insulative nests and huddling are likely critical in overcoming high energy costs associated with poorly insulated artificial dens. In contrast, during summer high thermoregulatory costs were predicted for the warmest (lowland) site and coincided with low nest box occupancy. Our study reinforces the importance of factoring in local climates, and behavioural and physiological strategies employed by target taxa, when implementing artificial den programs to support fauna populations. Abstract: To help mitigate large wetland losses in California, The Nature Conservancy launched a dynamic conservation incentive program to create temporary wetland habitats in harvested and fallow rice fields for shorebirds migrating along the Pacific Flyway. Farmers were invited to participate in a reverse auction bidding process and winning bids were selected based on their cost and potential to provide high quality shorebird habitat. This was done in 2014 and 2015, for separate enrollment periods that overlapped with spring and fall migration, both before and after the traditional post‐harvest flooding period. To assess the success of the program, we monitored shorebird use of fields that were enrolled (treatments), and others that were subject to typical rice farm management (controls). To put these observations in context, we used satellites to simultaneously monitor the extent of shallow‐water habitat across the ~215,000 ha of ricelands in the area. Results showed that providing habitat during migration, when it is typically unavailable in rice fields, yielded the largest average shorebird densities ever reported for agriculture in the region. Treatment fields had significantly greater shorebird density, richness and diversity than control fields in both spring and fall (especially September–early October, and late March–early April), but in fall the difference was greater. Shorebird responses to habitat provisioning, and regional habitat conditions, were variable from year to year, and highly dynamic within a given season. Overall, shorebirds densities were found to be negatively related to the total amount of flooded habitat in the rice landscape. Factors that affected habitat availability included allocation schedules of water deliveries from reservoirs, and rainfall patterns, both of which were influenced by drought. Collectively, these results suggest that appropriately managed agricultural lands have great potential to provide high value habitat for shorebirds during times of habitat deficit, including migration, and that fall may be a particularly impactful time to create additional habitat. Migratory species face great challenges due to the climate change, conversion of historical stopover sites, and other factors, but dynamic conservation programs offer promise that, at least in certain instances, their needs can still be met. Background: Age‐related hearing loss (ARHL) is highly prevalent in older adults, and more than two‐thirds above age of 70 years suffer from ARHL. Recent studies have established a link between ARHL and cognitive impairment; however, most of the studies have used verbally loaded cognitive measures to investigate the association between ARHL and cognition. It is possible that due to hearing impairment, the elderly may experience difficulty in following verbal instructions or completing tasks that heavily rely on hearing during cognitive assessments. This may result in overestimation of cognitive impairment in such individuals. This baseline cross‐sectional study investigated the associations between untreated hearing loss and a number of cognitive functions using a battery of non‐verbal cognitive tests. Further, association between hearing loss and psychological status of older adults was examined. Study design: Prospective case‐controlled study. Methods: A total of 119 participants (54 males, M=66.33±10.50 years; 65 females M=61.51±11.46 years) were recruited. All participants completed a hearing assessment, a computerised test battery of non‐verbal cognitive functions and the depression, anxiety and stress scale. Results: Hierarchical multiple regression analysis results revealed that hearing thresholds significantly associated with the working memory (P<0.05), paired associative learning scores (P<0.05), depression (P<0.001), and anxiety (P<0.001) and stress (P<0.001) scores. Analysis of covariance results revealed that participants with moderately‐severe hearing loss performed significantly poorer in paired associative learning and working memory tasks and psychological function tests compared to those with normal hearing. Conclusion: Results of the current study suggest a significant relationship between ARHL and both cognition and psychological status. Our results also have some implications for using non‐verbal cognitive tests to evaluate cognitive functions in post‐lingually hearing impaired ageing adults, at least for those with more than moderately‐severe levels of hearing loss. Background and Objective Periodontitis may promote harmful systemic effects such as changes in hepatic tissues. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the steatosis and oxidative stress caused by experimental periodontitis are reversible in the liver. Material and Methods Twenty-four rats were divided into three groups: control, periodontitis and P20-20 (20 days with experimental periodontitis and 20 days without experimental periodontitis, to verify the reversibility of hepatic injuries). The following parameters were assessed: gingival bleeding index, probing pocket depth, myeloperoxidase activity, alveolar bone loss for periodontal tissues; liver weights, histopathological scores for steatosis, inflammation and necrosis in liver; glutathione, malondialdehyde, total cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations in hepatic tissues; and blood levels of aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, albumin, gamma-glutaryl transferase, total cholesterol and random glucose. Results Gingival bleeding index, probing pocket depth, myeloperoxidase and alveolar bone loss parameters demonstrated the development of periodontitis. There was a significant reduction in the steatosis score of animals from the P20-20 group when compared with the periodontitis group. P20-20 group presented significantly higher glutathione (11 times) and lower malondialdehyde (nearly 23%), total cholesterol (both in blood and hepatic tissue) and triglyceride concentrations compared with the periodontitis group. For levels of aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, albumin, gamma-glutaryl transferase and random glucose, a significant difference between the groups was not observed. Conclusion Our results demonstrate that the microvesicular steatosis caused by periodontitis in rats is reversible after removal of the ligature, which is associated with the increase in oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation in the liver. Background: Short-chain carboxylic acids (SCCA) are metabolic byproducts of anaerobic subgingival bacteria associated with human periodontal disease. We examined the effect of 4 SCCA (butyric, propionic, succinic, and lactic acids) on human polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN) apoptosis over the range of concentrations (1 to 30 mM) found in the diseased periodontium.Methods: PMN suspensions were incubated at 37 degrees C with medium alone (control) or one of the 4 SCCA at concentrations of 1, 5, or 30 mM. Aliquots were withdrawn hourly to assess apoptosis and viability by fluorescence microscopy.Results: Relative to untreated controls, PMN incubated for at least 5 hours with 1 mM butyric or propionic acids exhibited significant delays in apoptosis (P<0.05), while those incubated with succinic or lactic acids exhibited no significant differences from controls (P>0.05). At a concentration of 5 mM, propionic, succinic, and lactic acids had little effect on apoptosis (P>0.05), but butyric acid significantly accelerated apoptotic changes (P<0.05). At 30 mM, all SCCA except lactic acid significantly accelerated apoptosis (P<0.05). Incubation with SCCA did not adversely affect cell viability (typically >98%). Lysates from PMN incubated 6 hours with 30 mM butyric or propionic acids contained significantly more caspase-3 activity than lysates from untreated control PMN (P<0.05). Moreover, pretreatment with a specific inhibitor of caspase-3 blocked acceleration of PMN apoptosis by butyric or propionic acids (P<0.05).Conclusion: Low concentrations of butyric or propionic acids delay PMN apoptosis and extend their functional lifespan, while higher concentrations accelerate apoptosis through a mechanism that appears to involve caspase-3. Objective: To determine the association of neck dissection and radiation treatment for head and neck cancer (HNC) with subsequent shoulder range of motion (ROM) and quality of life (QOL) in 5-year survivors.Design: A cross-sectional convenience sample.Setting: Otolaryngology clinics at tertiary care hospital and Veterans Affairs medical center.Patients: Five-year, disease-free survivors of HNC.Methods: Demographic and cancer treatment information was collected, including type of neck dissection (none, spinal accessory "nerve sparing," and "nerve sacrificing") and radiation. QOL questionnaires were administered, and shoulder ROM was measured.Main Outcome Measurements: University of Washington Quality of Life (UWQOL), Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy (FACT) Head and Neck, and Performance Status Scale for Head and Neck. Shoulder ROM measurements included abduction, adduction, flexion, extension, internal and external rotation.Results: One hundred and five survivors completed QOL surveys; 85 survivors underwent additional shoulder ROM evaluations. The nerve sacrifice group exhibited significantly poorer scores for UWQOL measures of disfigurement, level of activity, recreation and/or entertainment, speech and shoulder disability, and willingness to eat in public, FACT functional well-being, and FACT Head and Neck (P < .05). Shoulder ROM for flexion and abduction was poorest in the nerve sacrifice group (P < .05). Radiation was associated with significantly worse UWQOL swallowing (P < .05), but no other differences were found for QOL or ROM measurements. Decreased QOL scores were associated with decreased shoulder flexion and abduction (P < .05). Survivors with decreased shoulder abduction had significantly (P < .05) worse scores in disfigurement, recreation and/or entertainment, employment, shoulder disability, and FACT emotional well-being.Conclusions: Sparing the spinal accessory nerve during neck dissection is associated with significantly less long-term shoulder disability in 5-year survivors of HNC. QOL measures demonstrated the highest level of function in the no dissection group, an intermediate level of functioning with nerve sparing, and poorest function when the nerve is sacrificed. As the field of dental implants continues to grow at a rapid rate so does our quest to find new techniques to enhance bone grafting. Tissue engineering is an exciting new technique in bone grafting. Therefore, the purposes of this study were to develop a simple, reproducible method to isolate human osteoblast-like cells (HOBs) and to evaluate in vitro cell proliferation within 2 different 3-dimensional (3-D) constructs targeted for tissue engineering applications. Ultimately, HOBs that have been amplified within 3-D constructs may be employed for bone regeneration techniques, such as onlay and sinus grafting prior to implant placement. Our cell isolation protocol employed human fetal calvaria tissue sequentially digested with trypsin and collagenase. The HOB cells from only the third and fourth digests were obtained, cultured and evaluated within the constructs. An osteoblast-like phenotype was in part verified for these HOB cells by demonstrating a significantly higher alkaline phosphatase activity than for human gingival fibroblasts, and a comparable level to the osteoblast cell line MG-63. The HOB cells were cultured within either poly (D,L-lactide) (PLA) or a fused fiber ceramic and evaluated for the ability to support in vitro HOB amplification. HOB proliferation was validated by scanning electron microscopy, identifying cells throughout the 3-D constructs. Continuous cell viability was demonstrated for the duration of the 33-day evaluation period and the extent of cell amplification reached approximately 20 times the seeding density. The in vitro amplification results further indicate that tissue engineering strategies with either the PLA or fused fiber construct may be suitable for bone regeneration therapy for dental implants. As part of the Basic Science Survey Series for Dentistry, members of the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Physiology, Pharmacology, and Therapeutics Section surveyed directors of physiology courses in North American dental schools. The survey was designed to assess, among other things, faculty affiliation and experience of course directors, teaching methods, general course content and emphasis, extent of interdisciplinary (shared) instruction, and impact of recent curricular changes. Responses were received from forty-four of sixty-seven (65.7 percent) U.S. and Canadian dental schools. The findings suggest the following: substantial variation exists in instructional hours, faculty affiliation, class size, and interdisciplinary nature of physiology courses; physiology course content emphasis is similar between schools; student contact hours in physiology, which have remained relatively stable in the past fifteen years, are starting to be reduced; recent curricular changes have often been directed towards enhancing the integrative and clinically relevant aspects of physiology instruction; and a trend toward innovative content delivery, such as use of computer-assisted instruction, is evident. Data from this study may be usefiil to physiology course directors, curriculum committees, and other dental educators with an interest in integrative and interprofessional education. Local extirpations of Pacific salmonOncorhynchusspp. and steelheadO. mykiss, often due to dams and other stream barriers, are common throughout the western United States. Reestablishing salmonid populations in areas they historically occupied has substantial potential to assist conservation efforts, but best practices for reintroduction are not well established. In this paper, we present a framework for planning reintroductions designed to promote the recovery of salmonids listed under the Endangered Species Act. Before implementing a plan, managers should first describe the benefits, risks, and constraints of a proposed reintroduction. We define benefits as specific biological improvements towards recovery objectives. Risks are the potential negative outcomes of reintroductions that could worsen conservation status rather than improve it. Constraints are biological factors that will determine whether the reintroduction successfully establishes a self-sustaining population. We provide guidance for selecting a recolonization strategy (natural colonization, transplanting, or hatchery releases), a source population, and a method for providing passage that will maximize the probability of conservation benefit while minimizing risks. Monitoring is necessary to determine whether the reintroduction successfully achieved the benefits and to evaluate the impacts on nontarget species or populations. Many of the benefits, especially diversity and the evolution of locally adapted population segments, are likely to accrue over decadal time scales. Thus, we view reintroduction as a long-term approach to enhancing viability. Finally, our review of published salmonid reintroduction case studies suggests that large uncertainties remain in the success of reintroduction in establishing self-sustaining populations, particularly for programs employing active methods. Aims The adiposity rebound is the age in childhood when body mass index is at a minimum before increasing again. The age at rebound is highly variable. An early age is associated with increased obesity in later childhood and adult life. We have reported that an early rebound is predicted by low weight gain between birth and 1 year of age and resulting low body mass index at 1 year. Here, we examine whether age at adiposity rebound is determined by influences during infancy or is a consequence of foetal growth. Our hypothesis was that measurements of body size at birth are related to age at adiposity rebound. Methods Longitudinal study of 2877 children born in Helsinki, Finland, during 1934-1944. Results Early age at adiposity rebound was associated with small head circumference and biparietal diameter at birth, but not with other measurements of body size at birth. The mean age at adiposity rebound rose from 5.8 years in babies with a head circumference of ≤33 cm to 6.2 in babies with a head circumference of >36 cm ( P for trend = 0.007). The association between thinness in infancy and early rebound became apparent at 6 months of age. It was not associated with adverse living conditions. In a simultaneous regression, small head circumference at birth, high mother's body mass index and tall maternal stature each had statistically significant trends with early adiposity rebound ( P = 0.002, <0.001, 0.004). Conclusion We hypothesize that the small head size at birth that preceded an early adiposity rebound was the result of inability to sustain a rapid intra-uterine growth trajectory initiated in association with large maternal body size. The article presents a study on the effects of particle size on chemical speciation and bioavailability of copper to earthworms when exposed to copper nanoparticles. It investigates the role of particle size on the oxidation, bioavailability, and adverse effects of manufactured copper nanoparticles by exposing the earthworm on a series of concentration of commercially produced nanoparticles labeled as 20- to 40-nanometer copper in artificial soil media. The study suggests that oxidized copper nanoparticles may enter food chains from soil but adverse effects in earthworms are likely to occur only at relatively high concentrations.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of progressive fatigue on factors that previously have been associated with increased risk of low back pain in various occupational settings, during a repetitive lifting task where a freestyle lifting technique was used. A laboratory experiment was conducted to evaluate electromyography amplitude, kinematic, and kinetic parameters of repetitive freestyle lifting during a 2-hour lifting period. Subjective fatigue rating increased over time, indicating that the participant “felt” increasingly fatigued as the experiment progressed. Static composite strength decreased an average of 20% from the beginning to the end of the experiment. Effect of lifting posture (semi-squat, semi-stoop, and stoop) was observed on peak trunk flexion angle, trunk flexion angle at initiation of the lift, and knee angle at initiation of the lift indicating that, in freestyle lifting, participants assume quantitatively different lifting techniques. A significant effect of the time–posture interaction was observed on the dynamic leg lift floor to knuckle height strength, indicating that dynamic strength may change over time depending on lifting posture selected. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Workspace design plays an important role in ensuring workers' safety and welfare. The issue is more pressing in the manufacturing industry, where many workers must remain in a standing position, assume awkward postures, and perform repetitive tasks for extended periods of time. In this research, an electromyographic measurement technique was used to measure activity of four back muscles: the trapezius p. descendens, the deltoideus p. scapularis, the infraspinatus, and the latissimus dorsi. The results showed a statistically significant (p < 0.05) impact of left versus right side of the body, the degree of rotation to the right side of the body (0, 30, and 60 degrees rotation to the mid-sagittal plane), body mass index level (normal weight [<25 kg/m2] vs. overweight [&ges;25 kg/m2]), and tasks (high vs. low frequency). Variation in barometric pressure in Melbourne does not significantly affect the BTPS correction factor JOHNS DP, HARTLEY MF, BURNS G, THOMPSON BR. Respirology 2004; 9: 406–408 The conventional BTPS (body temperature and pressure, saturated with water vapour) correction factor varies with ambient barometric pressure (PB) and many lung function laboratories measure PB daily. The aim was to investigate whether a fixed value for PB could replace daily measurements. PB was measured daily over a 12-month period. The highest and lowest values in Melbourne in the last century were also recorded from data published by the Bureau of Meteorology. Using these PB values, the BTPS factor was determined for a range of spirometer temperatures and compared to the BTPS factors obtained using a fixed ambient pressure of 101.3 kPa. The mean (SD) PB measured over the 12-month period was 102.2 kPa (0.64) with a range of 99.9–103.6 kPa. The level of disagreement between the BTPS factor calculated using a PB of 101.3 kPa instead of the measured value was greater at lower temperatures. Over the extremes of PB during the last century (98.0–104.3 kPa) the use of a standard pressure (101.3 kPa) produced an error in the BTPS factor of ≤ 0.16%. Daily variations in PB do not significantly affect the magnitude of the conventional BTPS correction factor and a fixed value, such as 101.3 kPa at sea level, can be used with little error.
