Theory suggests that eutrophication impacts plant community biodiversity by constraining niche differences and increasing competitive inequalities among species, leading to the exclusion of weaker competitors. However, explicit tests of nutrient effects on the strength and direction of inter‐ and intraspecific plant–plant interactions that dictate coexistence are lacking, especially in complex field settings where multiple processes can simultaneously affect plant growth and reproduction.We conducted a field experiment in southeastern Vancouver Island, Canada, using four annual grassland plant species to test how species interactions responded to eutrophication and the covariation of herbivore pressure and neighbour species light‐ and moisture‐use.We found that focal species reproduction was limited by nutrient availability and herbivory, such that the nature of species interactions was context‐dependent. Competitive interactions failed to predict species persistence under these conditions. Instead, facilitation was critical—phytometers grown without neighbours consistently failed to produce seed under herbivore pressure meaning that fecundity significantly increased with neighbour density.Synthesis. Our work demonstrates the importance of species interactions in plant community responses to eutrophication but emphasizes that 'indirect' drivers of plant performance may influence or overwhelm nutrient effects on plant–plant competition. The widespread occurrence of mortality overcome primarily by facilitation highlights the importance of positive density dependence. Overall, our results suggest that knowledge of resource niche overlap may be insufficient to explain plant community responses to eutrophication. Transitioning to low‐input agricultural systems such as organic farming has been acknowledged as a way to mitigate negative effects of agriculture on biodiversity. However, the speed, magnitude and context dependence of biodiversity recovery after converting to organic farming remain uncertain. In this study, we explored the response of plant communities to time since transition to organic farming in a variety of production contexts.Using a spatially replicated space‐for‐time substitution design, we surveyed plant communities in small‐grain cereal and ley fields in conventional and organic farms, distributed along independent gradients of time since transition to organic farming and proportion of seminatural grasslands in the landscapes. We selected a set of response traits to explore the mechanism of potential time lag in that response to conversion. These traits were selected to characterize the sensitivity of plant species to agricultural inputs and their ability to respond swiftly to environmental changes.We found an increase in plant species richness and evenness in cereal fields with increasing time since transition to organic farming, and a similar but less pronounced pattern in leys. After 30 years of continuous organic farming, organic cereal fields harboured more than twice the number of plant species than newly converted fields. Importantly, we found that the dependence on insect pollination, sensitivity to herbicides and dispersal capacity of plants modulated the effects of time since transition on plant communities in cereal fields. This suggests that both management and biotic interactions shape plant community structure in response to organic practices over time.Policy implications. Our study highlights that benefits of organic farming for plant diversity are likely to take decades to become substantial after conversion. We found this slow recovery of plant communities to be driven by both the gradual improvement of habitat quality after conversion and species' dispersal limitation. Assessments of biodiversity benefits of organic farming should therefore consider this time delay to avoid underestimating its environmental performance. The interruption of plant‐pollinator interactions may threaten global plant diversity, food security and ecosystem stability. Recent reports of strong declines in both insects and plants point to insect decline as a driver of plant decline. However, it is still unknown whether these trends are related as plants often produce seeds without the need for insect pollinators, and to what extent insect‐pollinated plants have declined in relation to plants not pollinated by insects.In this study, we hypothesise that natural plant communities have shifted away from insect‐pollination. We combined 365,768 vegetation plots from 1930 to 2017 in the Netherlands and plant traits to assess the changes in occurrences of plants pollinated by different modes. Furthermore, we included key drivers in plant decline—specifically nitrogen, moisture and habitat types—as interaction factors to explore the persistence of the observed changes under different environmental conditions.The proportion of insect‐pollinated plants has declined while that of wind‐pollinated plants has increased over the last 87 years. This proportional change reflects an absolute decrease in the number of insect‐pollinated species and an increase in the number of wind‐pollinated species.Synthesis and applications. This study implies that Dutch landscapes are losing insect‐pollinated plant species, which is likely due, at least in part, to the decline in pollination services. Our results of quantifying the decline in insect‐pollinated plants support the necessity and urgency of taking conservation initiatives. Several management strategies and policy recommendations could be applied to alleviate the decline of insect‐pollinated plants and ensure crop safety. For example, conserving natural environments by reducing nitrogen deposition may support local plants and insect pollinators. Additionally, there is a particular need for focused efforts to protect natural grasslands, as these areas harbour many insect‐pollinated plants, which have experienced declines. Finally, monitoring and assessing the state of both pollinators and (insect‐pollinated) plants is needed to assess the progress of conservation measures. While recognising the interdependence of pollinators and pollinated plants, it is crucial to extend efforts beyond pollinator conservation alone to effectively safeguard insect‐pollinated plants and ensure crop safety. Aims: Oligotrophic grasslands are habitats that host among the most diverse plant communities in Europe. Altering management regimes by either intensifying or ceasing management is known to decrease plant diversity. Yet, despite its importance for the recovery of plant communities after disturbances, little is known about whether seed banks are also affected by changes in management. Here, we investigate the effect of management practices on a meadow seed bank using a long‐term manipulative experiment. We focus on the response of the seed bank to the treatments, and the relationship between the seed bank and the vegetation response. Methods: The study was conducted in a species‐rich wet meadow. The experiment consists of a factorial combination of fertilization, mowing, and removal of the dominant species. After 20 years of management, the seed bank was sampled seasonally at two soil layer depths. Standing vegetation was recorded in June at the peak of vegetation. Results: All seed bank characteristics varied between soil layers. Mowing decreased seed density and diversity, while fertilization significantly affected the species composition. Dominant removal had no effect on the seed bank. While seed bank diversity was not correlated to vegetation diversity, individual species' responses to mowing and fertilization were positively correlated in the seed bank and the vegetation. Conclusions: Our results show that long‐term management influences the seed bank down to 10 cm of soil depth. Whereas mowing apparently reduced seed density and diversity, the effects of fertilization on these characteristics were harder to interpret. After 20 years, most species had concordant responses to both mowing and fertilization, indicating a low legacy of previous management regimes on the seed bank. Our study reveals that the intensification of grassland management has a profound effect on plant diversity by directly affecting plant communities and their seed‐bank‐driven recovery potential. Questions: Numerous studies on community assembly processes have been conducted in natural ecosystems. However, we know little about community assembly processes in human‐dominated urban ecosystems. Here, we asked: (1) how are the composition and functional diversity of native and exotic plant species shaped by local environment and landscape factors across urban vacant lots; and (2) how is microbial (bacterial and fungal) community composition influenced by the local environment, landscape factors, and plant species composition across urban vacant lots? Location: We investigated 69 urban vacant lots in Yokohama, Japan. Methods: By using a variation partitioning approach, we examined the relative importance of local environmental and landscape factors (including land use and spatial structure) in explaining variation in plant species composition and functional diversity of native or exotic species. We also explored the relative importance of local environmental and landscape factors, and plant species composition in explaining variation in microbial community composition. Results: The spatial structure of vacant lots determined the species composition and functional diversity of plant communities, suggesting that plant community assembly is determined by dispersal limitation. However, the functional diversity of the exotic species varied randomly, which reduced the relative importance of the spatial structure of vacant lots. Plant species composition as well as the spatial structure of vacant lots were the important drivers of the composition of soil microbial communities, despite a higher proportion of unexplained variation in their composition. Finally, we found an essential contribution of earthmoving methods in explaining the variations in both plant and microbial community composition. Conclusion: Plant and microbial community composition would be largely determined by dispersal limitation across urban vacant lots. Understanding urban community assembly is critical for predicting plant and microbial communities that play an essential role in regulating urban ecosystem functioning and services. Plants face trade‐offs between allocating resources to growth, while also defending against herbivores or pathogens. Species differences along defense trade‐off axes may promote coexistence and maintain diversity. However, few studies of plant communities have simultaneously compared defense trade‐offs against an array of herbivores and pathogens for which defense investment may differ, and even fewer have been conducted in the complex natural communities in which these interactions unfold. We tested predictions about the role of defense trade‐offs with competition and growth in diversity maintenance by tracking plant species abundance in a field experiment that removed individual consumer groups (mammals, arthropods, fungi) and added nutrients. Consistent with a growth–defense trade‐off, plant species that increased in mass in response to nutrient addition also increased when consumers were removed. This growth–defense trade‐off occurred for all consumer groups studied. Nutrient addition reduced plant species richness, which is consistent with trade‐off theory. Removing foliar fungi increased plant diversity via increased species evenness, whereas removal of other consumer groups had little effect on diversity, counter to expectations. Thus, while growth–defense trade‐offs are general across consumer groups, this trade‐off observed in wild plant communities does not necessarily support plant diversity maintenance. Aim: Livestock production is among the main anthropogenic disturbances in seasonally dry tropical forests. However, its effects on plant functional composition in dry forests is poorly understood. Our goal was to analyze the variation in both functional composition and functional diversity of plant communities under goat grazing and at different ages of fallow in a tropical dry forest. Location: Brazilian dry forest (Caatinga) in Rio Grande do Norte State, northeastern Brazil. Methods: We measured the height, leaf area, and specific leaf area of all shrub‐tree and herbaceous species along a gradient of stocking rate, years of grazing, and age of fallow. Additionally, we quantified the foliar contents of nitrogen, phosphorus, and tannins in the tree shrub layer. We tested the effects of grazing and deforestation using linear mixed models. Results: Our findings suggest that the functional diversity of plant communities in the Caatinga is not altered when goat grazing and secondary succession are examined independently. However, the interaction of both factors has affected the functional diversity, particularly in the herbaceous layer. Although grazing influenced specific traits in the shrub‐tree layer, the overall functional diversity remained unaltered by grazing, succession, or their interaction. Conclusions: Grazing does not interfere with the natural succession process nor diminish the functional diversity of plant communities in the Caatinga. Litter decomposition facilitates the recycling of often limiting resources, which may promote plant productivity responses to diversity, that is, overyielding. However, the direct relationship between decomposition, k, and overyielding remains underexplored in grassland diversity manipulations.We test whether local adaptation of microbes, that is, home‐field advantage (HFA), N‐priming from plant inputs or precipitation drive decomposition and whether decomposition generates overyielding. Within a grassland diversity‐manipulation, altering plant richness (1, 2, 3 and 6 species), composition (communities composed of plants from a single‐family or multiple‐families) and precipitation (50% and 150% ambient growing season precipitation), we conducted a litter decomposition experiment. In spring 2020, we deployed four replicate switchgrass, Panicum virgatum, litter bags (1.59 mm mesh opening), collecting them over 7 months to estimate litter k.Precipitation was a strong, independent driver of decomposition. Switchgrass decomposition accelerated with grass richness and decelerated as phylogenetic dissimilarity from switchgrass increased, suggesting decomposition is fastest at 'home'. However, decomposition slowed with switchgrass density. In plots that contained switchgrass, we observed no relationship between decomposition and fungal saprotroph dissimilarity from switchgrass. However, in plots without switchgrass, decomposition slowed with increasing saprotroph dissimilarity from switchgrass. Combined these findings suggest that HFA is strongest when closely related neighbours, that is, heterospecific neighbours, are present in the community, rather than other individuals of the same species, that is, conspecifics. Legumes accelerated decomposition with more litter N remaining in those plots, suggesting that N‐inputs from planted legumes are priming decomposition of litter C. However, decomposition and overyielding were unrelated in legume communities. While in grass communities, overyielding and decomposition were positively related and the relationship was strongest in plots with low densities of switchgrass, that is, with heterospecific neighbours.Combined these findings suggest that plant species richness and community composition stimulate litter decomposition through multiple mechanisms, including N‐priming, but only HFA from local adaptation of microbes on closely related species correlates with overyielding, likely through resource recycling. Our results link diversity with ecosystem processes facilitating above‐ground productivity. Whether diversity loss will affect litter decomposition, productivity or both is contingent on resident plant traits and whether a locally adapted soil microbiome is maintained. Species morphological and behavioural traits are key determinants of which pollinator species interact with which plant species. However, individuals within species are not identical in their traits and this diversity could help us understand plant–pollinator interaction patterns.Using three independent data sets, we assessed whether bee intraspecific body size variation (ITV) and sociality influenced pollinator interaction specialisation, intraspecific niche partitioning, centrality in the interaction network and phylogenetic diversity of the plants visited.We found that solitary pollinators were more specialised in their interactions with plants and had lower intraspecific niche partitioning compared to social pollinators. Furthermore, solitary pollinators with higher ITV had higher centrality in the network and visited a higher phylogenetic diversity of plants compared to solitary species with lower ITV, whereas the opposite pattern emerged for social pollinators. Pollinator ITV did not differ between social and solitary bee species.Our findings show that the effect of pollinator body size variation on plant–pollinator interactions depends on pollinator species sociality. Specifically, solitary pollinators with higher ITV and social pollinators with lower ITV seem to be the most important contributors to maintaining the evolutionary diversity of the plant community, and also the species with the largest potential to affect (via cascade effects) the entire plant–pollinator network. Roots are essential to the diversity and functioning of plant communities, but trade‐offs in rooting strategies are still poorly understood.We evaluated existing frameworks of rooting strategy trade‐offs and tested their underlying assumptions, guided by the hypothesis that community‐level rooting strategies are best described by a combination of variation in organ‐level traits, plant‐level root:shoot allocation and symbiosis‐level mycorrhizal dependency. We tested this hypothesis using data on plant community structure, above‐ and below‐ground biomass, eight root traits including mycorrhizal colonisation and soil properties from an edaphic gradient driven by elevation and water availability in sandhills prairie, Nebraska, USA.We found multidimensional trade‐offs in rooting strategies represented by a two‐way productivity‐durability trade‐off axis (captured by root length density and root dry matter content) and a three‐way resource acquisition trade‐off between specific root length, root:shoot mass ratio and mycorrhizal dependence. Variation in rooting strategies was driven to similar extents by interspecific differences and intraspecific responses to soil properties.Organ‐level traits alone were insufficient to capture community‐level trade‐offs in rooting strategies across the edaphic gradient. Instead, trait variation encompassing organ, plant and symbiosis levels revealed that consideration of whole‐plant phenotypic integration is essential to defining multidimensional trade‐offs shaping the functional variation of root systems. Many studies identify fungal and oomycete phytopathogens as natural enemies capable of influencing plant species composition and promoting diversity in plant communities. However, little is known about how plant‐pathogen interactions vary along regional abiotic gradients or with tree species characteristics, which limits our understanding of the causes of variation in tree species richness.We surveyed 10,756 seedlings from 272 tree species for disease symptoms along a mean annual precipitation gradient in the tropical wet forests of Central Panama for 3 months in the early wet season (June–August) and 2 months in the following dry season (March–April). Over 99% of observed disease symptoms were caused by necrotrophic foliar pathogens, while less than 1% of symptoms were attributed to soilborne pathogens. Foliar disease incidence was inversely related to mean annual precipitation, a pattern which may be due to greater disease susceptibility among dry forest species.Foliar disease incidence increased with conspecific seedling density but did not respond to the proximity of conspecific adults. Although foliar disease incidence decreased as mean annual precipitation increased, the strength of conspecific density‐ or distance‐dependence was independent of the precipitation gradient.Seedlings of common tree species and species dispersed by non‐flying mammals had a higher risk of foliar pathogen incidence. Increased disease in common species may help reduce their dominance.Synthesis. The increases in foliar pathogen incidence with conspecific seedling density, species abundance, and dispersal mechanism indicate that foliar disease incidence is non‐random and may contribute to the regulation of tropical plant communities and species coexistence. Furthermore, the relationships between foliar disease incidence, dispersal mechanism and precipitation suggest plant‐pathogen interactions could shift as a response to climate change and disruption of the disperser community. It is well known that biodiversity positively affects ecosystem functioning, leading to enhanced ecosystem stability. However, this knowledge is mainly based on analyses using single ecosystem functions, while studies focusing on the stability of ecosystem multifunctionality (EMF) are rare. Taking advantage of a long‐term grassland biodiversity experiment, we studied the effect of plant diversity (1–60 species) on EMF over 5 years, its temporal stability, as well as multifunctional resistance and resilience to a 2‐year drought event. Using split‐plot treatments, we further tested whether a shared history of plants and soil influences the studied relationships. We calculated EMF based on functions related to plants and higher‐trophic levels. Plant diversity enhanced EMF in all studied years, and this effect strengthened over the study period. Moreover, plant diversity increased the temporal stability of EMF and fostered resistance to reoccurring drought events. Old plant communities with shared plant and soil history showed a stronger plant diversity–multifunctionality relationship and higher temporal stability of EMF than younger communities without shared histories. Our results highlight the importance of old and biodiverse plant communities for EMF and its stability to extreme climate events in a world increasingly threatened by global change. Summary: Understanding and predicting recruitment in species‐rich plant communities requires identifying functional determinants of both density‐independent performance and interactions.In a common‐garden field experiment with 25 species of the woody plant genus Protea, we varied the initial spatial and taxonomic arrangement of seedlings and followed their survival and growth during recruitment. Neighbourhood models quantified how six key functional traits affect density‐independent performance, interaction effects and responses.Trait‐based neighbourhood models accurately predicted individual survival and growth from the initial spatial and functional composition of species‐rich experimental communities. Functional variation among species caused substantial variation in density‐independent survival and growth that was not correlated with interaction effects and responses. Interactions were spatially restricted but had important, predominantly competitive, effects on recruitment. Traits increasing the acquisition of limiting resources (water for survival and soil P for growth) mediated trade‐offs between interaction effects and responses. Moreover, resprouting species had higher survival but reduced growth, likely reinforcing the survival–growth trade‐off in adult plants.Resource acquisition of juvenile plants shapes Protea community dynamics with acquisitive species with strong competitive effects suffering more from competition. Together with functional determinants of density‐independent performance, this makes recruitment remarkably predictable, which is critical for efficient restoration and near‐term ecological forecasts of species‐rich communities. The desert ecosystem of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP) is an important component of China's desert ecosystem. Studying the mechanisms shaping the taxonomic, phylogenetic, and functional beta diversity of plant communities in the QTP desert will help us to promote scientific conservation and management of the region's biodiversity. This study investigated the effects of environmental (including altitude, climate factors, and soil factors) and geographic distances on three facets of beta diversity as well as their turnover and nestedness components based on field survey data. The results showed that turnover components dominate the three facets of beta diversity. However, the turnover contributions to phylogenetic and functional beta diversity were lower than for taxonomic beta diversity. Environmental distance had a greater influence than geographic distance, with the former uniquely explaining 15.2%–22.8% of beta diversity and the latter explaining only 1.7%–2.4%. Additionally, the explanatory power of different factors for beta diversity differed between herbs and shrubs, with environmental distance being more important for the latter. Distance‐based redundancy analysis suggested that soil total potassium content had a substantial impact on the beta diversity of three dimensions, with mean temperature of the coldest month and soil total phosphorus content having a substantial impact on taxonomic and functional beta diversity as well. Our results support that environmental sorting plays a predominant role in shaping plant community composition across QTP desert ecosystems. To maintain the plant diversity of this region, it is crucial to prioritize the conservation of its diverse environmental conditions and actively mitigate its degradation by anthropogenic pressures. High alpine regions are threatened but understudied ecosystems that harbor diverse endemic species, making them an important biome for testing the role of environmental factors in driving functional trait‐mediated community assembly processes. We tested the hypothesis that plant community assembly along a climatic and elevation gradient is influenced by shifts in habitat suitability, which drive plant functional, phylogenetic, and spectral diversity. In a high mountain system (2400–3500 m) Región Metropolitana in the central Chilean Andes (33°S, 70°W). We surveyed vegetation and spectroscopic reflectance (400–2400 nm) to quantify taxonomic, phylogenetic, functional, and spectral diversity at five sites from 2400 to 3500 m elevation. We characterized soil attributes and processes by measuring water content, carbon and nitrogen, and net nitrogen mineralization rates. At high elevation, colder temperatures reduced available soil nitrogen, while at warmer, lower elevations, soil moisture was lower. Metrics of taxonomic, functional, and spectral alpha diversity peaked at mid‐elevations, while phylogenetic species richness was highest at low elevation. Leaf nitrogen increased with elevation at the community level and within individual species, consistent with global patterns of increasing leaf nitrogen with colder temperatures. The increase in leaf nitrogen, coupled with shifts in taxonomic and functional diversity associated with turnover in lineages, indicate that the ability to acquire and retain nitrogen in colder temperatures may be important in plant community assembly in this range. Biodiversity is considered important to the mitigation of global change impacts on ecosystem multifunctionality in terrestrial ecosystems. However, potential mechanisms through which biodiversity maintains ecosystem multifunctionality under global change remain unclear. We grew 132 plant communities with two levels of plant diversity, crossed with treatments based on 10 global change factors (nitrogen deposition, soil salinity, drought, plant invasion, simulated grazing, oil pollution, plastics pollution, antibiotics pollution, heavy metal pollution, and pesticide pollution). All global change factors negatively impacted ecosystem multifunctionality, but negative impacts were stronger in high compared with low diversity plant communities. We explored potential mechanisms for this unexpected result, finding that the inhibition of selection effects (i.e., selection for plant species associated with high ecosystem functioning) contributed to sensitivity of ecosystem multifunctionality to global change. Specifically, global change factors decreased the abundance of novel functional plants (i.e., legumes) in high but not low diversity plant communities. The negative impacts of global change on ecosystem multifunctionality were also mediated by increased relative abundance of fungal plant pathogens (identified from metabarcoding of soil samples) and their negative relationship with the abundance of novel functional plants. Taken together, our experiment highlights the importance of protecting high diversity plant communities and legumes, and managing fungal pathogens, to the maintenance of ecosystem multifunctionality in the face of complex global change. Plant–soil feedback (PSF) is an important mechanism determining plant community dynamics and structure. Understanding the geographic patterns and drivers of PSF is essential for understanding the mechanisms underlying geographic plant diversity patterns. We compiled a large dataset containing 5969 observations of PSF from 202 studies to demonstrate the global patterns and drivers of PSF for woody and non‐woody species. Overall, PSF was negative on average and was influenced by plant attributes and environmental settings. Woody species PSFs did not vary with latitude, but non‐woody PSFs were more negative at higher latitudes. PSF was consistently more positive with increasing aridity for both woody and non‐woody species, likely due to increased mutualistic microbes relative to soil‐borne pathogens. These findings were consistent between field and greenhouse experiments, suggesting that PSF variation can be driven by soil legacies from climates. Our findings call for caution to use PSF as an explanation of the latitudinal diversity gradient and highlight that aridity can influence plant community dynamics and structure across broad scales through mediating plant–soil microbe interactions. Aim: Stochastic and deterministic (biotic factors such as intraspecies competition or abiotic factors) processes affect the spatial patterns of ecological communities. These processes can be quantitatively assessed based on spatial autocorrelation (SAC) parameters. However, the global patterns of SAC and their differences across vegetation types remain unknown. We aimed to (1) quantitatively assess the SAC global pattern in plant communities and their variation from 1990 to 2020 and (2) identify the key drivers of SAC in plant communities in protected areas (PAs). Location: Global. Time Period: 1990–2020. Major Taxa Studied: Terrestrial plants. Methods: Using normalized difference vegetation index data extracted from remote sensing datasets, we calculated the SAC parameters, including the Nugget, Partial Sill (PSill), and Sill, in 147 samples from 49 PAs in 1990, 2000, 2010, and 2020. The random forest model was employed to identify the drivers among 10 annual and 120 monthly climatic variables. Results: The SAC patterns of plant communities in global PAs differed across vegetation types. It reached the highest in grasslands and evergreen needleleaved forests, mainly explained by annual energy metrics, and the lowest in tropical evergreen rain forests around equator and boreal coniferous forests near the Arctic Circle. From 1990 to 2020, the Nugget, PSill, and Sill decreased by 92.36%, 58.36%, and 60.61%, respectively, indicating biological homogeneity. Monthly climatic variables explain SAC variations better than annual ones. Main Conclusions: From 1990 to 2020, the SAC parameters decreased sharply across vegetation types, indicating an obvious biologically homogenous trend that was mainly driven by monthly climatic variation, vary across sites and vegetation types. A combination of forest thinning followed by prescribed burning is widely applied in the western United States to increase ecosystem resistance and resilience to disturbances. Understory plant community responses may be driven by both management treatments and climatic factors. Thus, responses to treatments during a 20‐year megadrought have implications for the role of management in fostering adaptive capacity to climate change.We used a network of five sites (600 plots) spanning an environmental gradient in ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) forests of the American Southwest, an ecosystem that is broadly distributed and actively managed throughout the western United States. We used repeated long‐term monitoring data to quantify plant community responses to treatment 1–5‐, 6–10‐ and >10‐year post‐implementation. Specifically, we focussed on the effects of treatment and abiotic conditions on native and non‐native plant cover and species richness and the proportion of native species with northern (cool‐mesic) biogeographic affinities.Overall, thinning and prescribed burning nearly doubled native cover and increased native species richness by about 50% relative to untreated controls. These effects persisted for over a decade after treatment, even under the influence of significant and persistent drought. Cover and richness were also greater on intermediate to wet sites. Finally, native species with northern biogeographic affinities were reduced for up to 5 years after treatment relative to those with southern (warm‐xeric) affinities, and in dry years, indicating that both management and interannual climate variability may foster shifts to plant communities that are more resilient to a warming climate.Synthesis and applications. Plant communities in nature are often challenged by multiple global change factors (GCFs) and also ubiquitously encountered with soil nutrient heterogeneity. So far, however, we know little about the interactive effect of multiple GCFs and soil nutrient heterogeneity on plant communities. We conducted an outdoor mesocosm experiment in which a plant community was either grown in heterogeneous soils consisting of high‐ and low‐nutrient patches, or in homogeneous soils where the same amount of nutrients was evenly distributed. These plant communities were exposed to none (control), single, or a combination of two or four GCFs (i.e. drought, nitrogen deposition, microplastic and cadmium). Biomass of the plant community exposed to drought and nitrogen deposition were greater in heterogeneous than in homogeneous soils, but evenness of the plant community exposed to microplastics was lower. Increasing the number of GCFs increased community biomass more in heterogeneous than in homogeneous soils, but it generally reduced community evenness, independent of soil nutrient heterogeneity. These contrasting responses were related to changing competitive hierarchies and root foraging responses under different treatments. Our results suggest that soil nutrient heterogeneity can alter community productivity and diversity via changing competitive interactions of the component species, depending on both the identity and the number of GCFs acting on the community. Warming in mountain regions is projected to be three times faster than the global average. Pronounced climate change will likely lead to species reshuffling in mountain plant communities and consequently change ecosystem resilience and functioning. Yet, little is known about the role of inter‐ versus intraspecific changes of plant traits and their consequences for functional richness and evenness of mountain plant communities under climate change. We performed a downslope translocation experiment of intact plant‐soil mesocosms from an alpine pasture and a subalpine grassland in the Swiss and Austrian Alps to simulate an abrupt shift in climate and removal of dispersal barriers. Translocated plant communities experienced warmer and dryer climatic conditions. We found a considerable shift from resource conservative to resource acquisitive leaf‐economy in the two climate change scenarios. However, shifts in leaf‐economy were mainly attributable to species turnover, namely colonization by novel lowland species with trait expressions for a wider range of resource use. We also found an increase in vegetative height of the warmed and drought‐affected alpine plant community, while trait plasticity to warming and drought was limited to few graminoid species of the subalpine plant community. Our results highlight the contrast between the strong competitive potential of novel lowland species in quickly occupying available niche space and native species' lack of both the intraspecific trait variability and the plant functional trait expressions needed to increase functional richness under warming and drought. This is particularly important for the trailing range of many mountain species (i.e. subalpine zone) where upward moving lowland species are becoming more abundant and abiotic climate stressors are likely to become more frequent in the near future. Invertebrate herbivores are important and diverse, and their abundance and impacts will likely shift under climate change. Yet, past studies of invertebrate herbivory have documented highly variable responses to changing temperature, making it challenging to predict the direction and magnitude of these shifts. One explanation for these responses is that changing environmental conditions drive concurrent changes in plant communities and herbivore traits. The impacts of changing temperature on herbivory might therefore depend on how temperature combines and interacts with characteristics of plant and herbivore communities. To test this, we surveyed damage to leaves by invertebrate herbivores on 4400 plant individuals in 220 sampling plots along a 1101 m elevational gradient. Increasing temperature drove community‐level herbivory via at least three overlapping mechanisms: increasing temperature directly reduced herbivory, indirectly affected herbivory by reducing plant‐community phylogenetic diversity, and indirectly affected herbivory by altering the effects of plant‐community functional and phylogenetic diversity on herbivory. Consequently, increasing plant functional diversity reduced herbivory in colder environments while increasing plant phylogenetic diversity increased herbivory in warmer environments. Moreover, different herbivore feeding guilds varied in their response to temperature and plant community composition. These results indicate that, even along a single elevation gradient in a single year, a variety of mechanisms can concurrently drive herbivory, thereby supporting the hypothesis that a universal response of herbivory to changing environmental conditions is unlikely to exist. One of the challenges in ecological restorations is that some native plant species are difficult to reestablish in disturbed or invaded landscapes. Some invasive plant species negatively impact soil biota, such as arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi, which can lead to feedbacks that facilitate their dominance in a landscape. The winter annual grass, Ventenata dubia, is rapidly invading North American grasslands, however, the effect of its invasion on AM fungi, plant communities, and soil properties is not well known. In a greenhouse and field experiment, we tested (1) whether the abundance of viable AM fungal propagules is altered in soil invaded by V. dubia; (2) how plant community composition, species richness, and/or diversity may be impacted by V. dubia; and (3) whether soil properties, such as pH and organic matter (OM) vary across invasion levels. We found that the effect of V. dubia on the abundance of mycorrhizal propagules varied among sites and did not reduce the species richness or diversity of resident plant communities. Higher canopy cover of V. dubia was associated with higher soil pH and OM, which suggests either V. dubia invasions change these soil properties, or that V. dubia preferentially invades these areas. Our findings suggest V. dubia does not consistently alter above‐ or belowground communities; however, the potential link between V. dubia invasions and soil pH and OM deserves additional investigation. A better understanding of how invasive annual grasses impact plant and soil communities will be useful in informing restoration efforts in landscapes impacted by invasive species. Question: Livestock grazing affects plant communities in drylands worldwide. However, our current understanding of the Patagonian drylands has primarily been derived from comparing exclosures with grazing conditions or from single‐site grazing gradients. The pending question is: do impacts of grazing intensification on Patagonian plant communities change along aridity gradients? Location: Patagonia, Argentina. Methods: We surveyed vegetation cover of perennial species in paddocks with different sheep‐grazing pressure (ungrazed, lightly, moderately, and intensively grazed, based on long‐term stocking rates), in three plant communities located along a regional aridity gradient: a semi‐desert (arid), a shrub–grass steppe (semi‐arid), and a grass steppe (dry sub‐humid). In these communities, we analyzed the effects of grazing pressure on the total cover of vegetation, the cover of dominant plant life‐forms (grasses and shrubs), the plant species diversity, and the traits of dominant plant species. Results: Intensification of sheep grazing significantly decreased total vegetation cover in the semi‐desert, but not in the steppes. Although grazing decreased the cover of grasses (particularly of the highly preferred ones) in all communities, in the shrub–grass and grass steppes this reduction was offset by an increase in the cover and size of shrubs. Plant diversity was not consistently affected by grazing pressure in these communities. Traits of dominant plant species partially explained community responses to grazing intensification. Conclusions: Livestock grazing intensification reduces the forage quantity and quality of Patagonian plant communities, but the severity depends on plant community types. In semi‐deserts (the most arid), grasses were drastically affected, while in the steppes, the grazing effects on grasses were low and partially compensated by an increase in the cover and size of shrubs, which fulfill critical roles other than forage provision. Intra‐annual (i.e. seasonal) temporal niche partitioning is essential to the maintenance of biodiversity in many plant communities. However, understanding of how climate and global change drivers such as eutrophication influence seasonal niche partitioning in plant assemblages remains limited.We used early‐season and late‐season compositional data collected from 10 grassland sites around the world to explore relationships between climate variability and intra‐annual species segregation (i.e. seasonal β‐diversity) and to assess how nutrient enrichment alters seasonal β‐diversity in plant communities. We then assessed whether changes in seasonal β‐diversity in response to nutrient enrichment are underpinned by species turnover or nestedness and determined how specific functional groups (i.e. annual forbs, perennial forbs, C3 and C4 graminoids and legumes) respond to eutrophication within and across early and late sampling dates.We found a positive relationship between intra‐annual temperature variability and seasonal β‐diversity but observed no relationship between intra‐annual precipitation variability and seasonal β‐diversity. Nutrient enrichment increased seasonal β‐diversity and increased turnover of species between early‐ and late‐season communities. Nutrient enrichment reduced the abundance of C4 graminoids and legumes within and across sampling timepoints and eliminated intra‐annual differences in these groups. In contrast, nutrient enrichment resulted in seasonal differences in C3 graminoids, which were not observed in control conditions and increased abundance of C3 graminoids and annual forbs within and across early and late sampling dates.Synthesis: Our understanding of how grasslands respond to various components of global change is primarily based on studies that document community changes at inter‐annual scales. To understand, how the diversity and hence functioning of tundra ecosystems might respond to altering environmental conditions, fine‐scale studies are needed as local conditions may buffer broad‐scale environmental changes. Furthermore, species functional traits and phylogeny may provide complementary insights to taxonomic diversity patterns as they link plant communities to ecosystem processes often more closely than species count. Here, we examined taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic plant diversity in relation to fundamental environmental factors, namely, growing degree days, snow persistence, soil moisture, pH and fluvial disturbance in northern Norway. The relationships between eight diversity metrics and environmental predictors were investigated using hierarchical generalised additive models. Our results indicated that taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic plant diversity in tundra are all strongly linked to local snow and fluvial conditions, with average variable importance of 0.19 and 0.14, respectively, whereas the importance of other predictors was low (average variable importance < 0.06). The average explained deviance by the models was 0.23. Predicted hotspots of different diversity metrics overlapped notably and were mostly located along the streams. However, when the effect of taxonomic richness was removed from the phylogenetic and functional diversities their connections with environmental predictors were weaker but indicated strongest relationships with snow and soil pH showing distinct diversity hotspots in areas with low species richness. Our study demonstrates that investigating multiple facets of biodiversity enhances understanding on community patterns and their drivers. Furthermore, our results highlight the importance of addressing local hydrological conditions that represent both resources and disturbances for vegetation. As arctic and alpine areas are probably shifting from snow to rain dominated, incorporating snow and fluvial information into the models might be particularly important to better understand tundra ecosystems under global change. Aim: Evaluate the temporal changes in species diversity, composition, and structure of ephemeral plant communities and the seed bank in response to long‐term herbivore exclusion over 11 years in plots with and without herbivores. Location: North‐central Chile. Methods: We obtained information on ephemeral vegetation cover in August and September using the intercept point method and recorded seed abundance in April. The Bosque Fray Jorge National Park Long‐Term Socio‐Ecological Research (LTSER) provided these records covering 11 years (2009–2019). From the original experiment of 20 plots, we used eight plots divided into two treatments: four plots allowed free access to all herbivores (with herbivores), while the other four plots excluded herbivores (without herbivores). Results: We found that Hill–Shannon diversity increased in plant communities with herbivores and a temporal increase in the cover of the dominant species, Plantago hispidula, under herbivore exclusion. In wet years, species richness and temporal turnover of plant communities increased independently of treatment. Although seed abundance differed among treatments and years, population structure remained constant over time and among treatments, suggesting that the seed bank acts as a buffer against shocks that modify plant community dynamics. Structural equation modeling revealed that precipitation, via its positive effects on Plantago hispidula, increases native plant richness to a greater extent than herbivores. However, in the absence of herbivores, precipitation directly affects native species richness. Moreover, we found that precipitation also influences the native species richness of the seed bank, both directly and indirectly, although its impacts exhibit a time lag. Conclusions: Our study demonstrates that the temporal dynamics of ephemeral plant communities and seed banks in semi‐arid ecosystems are strongly coupled to climate variability, highlighting the vulnerability of these communities to biodiversity loss and climate change. Assessments of species diversity and richness are essential to understand present ecological and biodiversity conditions for effective conservation management strategies. Biodiversity indicators determine rangeland health and response to grazing, fire regimes and climate change. This research examined species richness, diversity and composition in a protected mountainous grassland. Two data sets, both collected from a 30 × 30 m plot, with similar species composition and cover were combined. One data set was collected using a 100‐step point survey and the other from a series of 16 plots. A single‐factor analysis of variance was used to test if the mean species richness and diversity of the sites differed across the study area. Species accumulation curves were used to determine the relationship between species richness and the number of sampling units per site. The results from fitting a species–area equation showed that the estimated maximum species richness was slightly greater than the observed species pool in all sites, meaning that the sampling units were not adequate (albeit by small margins) to capture all vascular plant species in the sites. The potential for targeted grazing for restoration through the removal of invasive species represents an effective tool for practitioners. This study examines the impact of targeted grazing across highly variable precipitation on buffelgrass, a widely introduced African grass that often escapes cultivation. We simulated targeted grazing, overgrazing, and no grazing by clipping at two intensities and not clipping in a third treatment. We did this in plots with buffelgrass invasion and documented buffelgrass size and reproduction, as well as native plant community diversity. Additionally, as a further proxy for grazing, we tracked root allocation by buffelgrass in mowed and unmowed plots for 25 months while documenting large variability in precipitation. We found that targeted grazing reduced the negative impact of buffelgrass on the native community; on the other hand, overgrazing reduced the native community diversity. Precipitation interacted with simulated grazing such that buffelgrass subjected to grazing was less tolerant to drought and future simulated herbivory after rains returned. Long‐term targeted grazing may lead to reductions in buffelgrass that allow the restoration of the native plant community, which benefits the biodiversity of flora and fauna, and supports multiple uses of rangelands. Biodiversity is threatened by global changes, but related research has focused primarily on species or functional group diversity, neglecting their interaction networks. The latter are particularly sensitive to global changes and essential for biodiversity maintenance. Furthermore, multiple global change factors are typically examined separately, rather than in concert which is more realistic in nature.To explore the responses of arthropod networks to multiple global changes, we conducted a field experiment in temperate grassland in northeast China, in which nitrogen (N) deposition, drought, snowmelt timing and their interactions were manipulated. We constructed and assessed networks of arthropod functional groups, and explored their responses to changes in plant communities and the abiotic environments.Nitrogen addition decreased arthropod network complexity because increased foliar N and simplified plant community strengthened trophic chains along a single pathway, weakening the net effect of other pathways. However, experimental drought decreased network complexity by filtering out plant species and changing micro‐habitats. While delayed snowmelt significantly increased arthropod abundance only in early spring, its interaction with N addition or with drought had various impacts on arthropod functional groups. Our results suggest that the interaction of arthropod consumers with plant species richness and with plant nutrients finally reduced the robustness, connectedness and function of entire species/functional group networks in response to global change factors.In conclusion, species loss and increasing plant nutrient concentrations are key factors simplifying networks under multiple global changes, and such simplification is likely to be strengthened if coupled with changes in micro‐habitats. Questions: How does long‐term, moderate‐intensity mowing affect plant community diversity, biomass, and composition in semi‐arid grasslands? And what are the underlying mechanisms that drive differences in plant community structure and functions between mowed and unmowed grasslands? Location: A semi‐arid grassland in Jilin Province, northeastern China. Methods: In a 30‐year experiment, we investigated long‐term effects of mowing on the grassland ecosystem in northeastern China by comparing plant community diversity, biomass, and composition between mowed and unmowed permanent plots across six grasslands. Results: Long‐term mowing did not affect plant species richness, but increased species evenness by 29%. Mowing had little effects on above‐ground (shoot) and below‐ground (root) biomass. The unchanged above‐ground biomass in the mowed areas was attributed to a trade‐off between biomass of grasses and forbs: mowing significantly increased forb biomass by 50%, but reduced grass biomass by 20% and the grass to forb biomass ratio by 46%. Mowing also reduced biomass of the dominant Leymus chinensis grass by 24% and litter biomass by 56%. Regression analyses indicated that the species evenness was negatively affected by L. chinensis biomass and litter biomass. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that, although long‐term moderate mowing has limited effects on plant species richness and plant biomass, such a managed strategy can greatly reduce the dominance of grass species and allow the growth of forb species, leading to a higher species evenness in the plant community. This win–win situation promotes forage production for farmers while increasing plant diversity for conservation, suggesting that current mowing tactics can be a sustainable management practice in this ecosystem. However, the continuous loss of plant litter because of mowing may have negative influences on soil nutrient availability in the long run. Questions: Soil resource heterogeneity influences the outcome of plant–plant interactions and, consequently, species co‐existence and diversity patterns. The magnitude and direction of heterogeneity effects vary widely, and the processes underlying such variations are not fully understood. In this study, we explored how and under what resource conditions small‐scale heterogeneity modulates grassland plant diversity. Location: Oderhänge Mallnow, Potsdam, Brandenburg, Germany. Methods: We expanded the individual‐based plant community model (IBC‐grass) to incorporate dynamic below‐ground resource maps, simulating spatial heterogeneity of resource availability. Empirical centimeter‐scale data of soil C/N ratio were integrated into the model, accounting for both configurational and compositional heterogeneity. We then analyzed the interplay between small‐scale heterogeneity and resource availability on the interaction and co‐existence of plant species and overall diversity. Results: Our results showed significant differences between the low‐ and high‐resource scenarios, with both configurational and compositional heterogeneity having a positive effect on species richness and Simpson's diversity, but only under low‐resource conditions. As compositional heterogeneity in the fine‐scale C/N ratio increased, we observed a positive shift in Simpson's diversity and species richness, with the highest effects at the highest level of variability tested. We observed little to no effect in nutrient‐rich scenarios, and a shift to negative effects at the intermediate resource level. The study demonstrates that site‐specific resource levels underpin how fine‐scale heterogeneity influences plant diversity and species co‐existence, and partly explains the divergent effects recorded in different empirical studies. Conclusions: This study provides mechanistic insights into the complex relationship between resource heterogeneity and diversity patterns. It highlights the context‐dependent effects of small‐scale heterogeneity, which can be positive under low‐resource, neutral under high‐resource, and negative under intermediate‐resource conditions. Root‐associated fungi could play a role in determining both the positive relationship between plant diversity and productivity in experimental grasslands, and its strengthening over time. This hypothesis assumes that specialized pathogenic and mutualistic fungal communities gradually assemble over time, enhancing plant growth more in species‐rich than in species‐poor plots. To test this hypothesis, we used high‐throughput amplicon sequencing to characterize root‐associated fungal communities in experimental grasslands of 1 and 15 years of age with varying levels of plant species richness. Specifically, we tested whether the relationship between fungal communities and plant richness and productivity becomes stronger with the age of the experimental plots. Our results showed that fungal diversity increased with plant diversity, but this relationship weakened rather than strengthened over the two time points. Contrastingly, fungal community composition showed increasing associations with plant diversity over time, suggesting a gradual build‐up of specific fungal assemblages. Analyses of different fungal guilds showed that these changes were particularly marked in pathogenic fungi, whose shifts in relative abundance are consistent with the pathogen dilution hypothesis in diverse plant communities. Our results suggest that root‐associated fungal pathogens play more specific roles in determining the diversity–productivity relationship than other root‐associated plant symbionts. Vegetation structural complexity (VSC)—the three‐dimensional distribution of plants within an ecosystem—is an important ecological trait. To date, research has focused primarily on the effects of VSC on ecological patterns and processes, but comparatively little is known about what drives variation in VSC.Recent advances in active remote sensing technology, particularly light detection and ranging and radio detection and ranging, have allowed the measurement of VSC at unprecedented spatial scales and resolutions. Out of this and earlier work has emerged evidence that VSC is typically associated with greater ecosystem functioning (especially microclimate regulation, productivity, faunal diversity and habitat provisioning), making restoration of vegetation complexity a potentially powerful restoration tool.Recent studies of VSC across natural and experimental gradients of plant diversity have also revealed that more diverse plant communities tend to be more structurally complex. However, the shape and generality of this relationship—and the mechanism(s) by which phytodiversity might contribute to structural complexity—remain poorly understood.Here, we review how active remote sensing has facilitated recent VSC research and shaped our understanding of the relationship between vegetation complexity and ecosystem function. We then present a theoretical framework for the relationship between phytodiversity and VSC based on classic biodiversity‐ecosystem functioning principles. Finally, we evaluate the evidence for the notion that diverse plant assemblages tend to be more structurally complex and explore the shape of the relationship between phytodiversity and VSC using data from 13 recent remote sensing studies.Synthesis. The relationship between phytodiversity and VSC appears to be almost universally positive. Preliminary evidence further suggests that the most common relationships between phytodiversity and VSC are linear or saturating, indicating that the extent of functional redundancy between species varies across plant communities and ecosystems. In contrast, we find little evidence for exponential or negative relationships between plant diversity and VSC, suggesting that even modest increases in plant diversity could markedly increase structural complexity. Additional investigations of phytodiversity‐VSC relationships are necessary to establish whether the observed positive relationships are causal (and, if so, in which direction) and to clarify the potential impact of plant community restoration on structural complexity and broader ecosystem function. Wet meadows in Germany are of high conservational value with a strong decline over the last centuries. Occasionally, new meadows developed, providing us with the opportunity to compare vegetation and habitat properties of wet meadows with currently similar, but different historical management. We categorized the areas as ancient, old or young, according to the point of establishment and grassland continuity in the last two centuries. Several trends derived from other grassland types proved also to be true for wet meadows like a high diversity of vascular plants and Red List species in long‐term managed grasslands. Old grasslands, established one to two centuries ago, exhibited the highest diversity of vascular plants and bryophytes, indicating additional plants arrived by seeding. We investigated species composition using ordination and indicator species. Ancient grasslands were characterized by plants adapted to wet meadows (Molinietalia) such as Rhinanthus serotinus. Young meadows were marked by plants revealing succession like Carex brizoides or a high productivity. A trend, contrary to other grassland types, was that most habitat properties exhibited no temporal pattern except habitat area and few soil attributes. Altogether, a stepwise intensification from ancient to young meadows was detected that reflects the fast development from traditional to modern agriculture. Including the grassland's history in conservation approaches and adapting the management accordingly will improve restoration attempts. Ancient and old grasslands provided more appropriate species for future wet meadows, whereas young grasslands often need a more intensive land use and would benefit from seeding to develop to species‐rich meadows. Many theories have been proposed to explain the high diversity of plants in the tropics. However, we lack an understanding of the processes that drive plant diversity and community assembly at different spatial scales. Here, we applied beta‐diversity partitioning to test how biotic and abiotic factors are associated with seedling beta‐diversity in a tropical montane forest in southern Ecuador. We recorded seedling communities on 81 subplots in nine plots located at three elevations along a 2000 m elevational gradient. We measured biotic pressures (i.e. herbivory and fungal pathogen attacks) and environmental conditions (i.e. soil moisture and canopy closure) in all subplots and related them to species turnover and richness differences in seedling communities within and between elevations. We found that species turnover increased with differences in biotic dissimilarity within elevations, while differences in species richness within elevations increased with increasing environmental dissimilarity. Between elevations, species turnover increased with increasing environmental dissimilarity. Our findings show that species turnover and changes in species richness are related differently to abiotic and biotic factors, and that the importance of these factors for shaping seedling diversity is scale‐dependent. Higher plant species diversity decreases variability of plant community productivity. The stabilizing effect of plant diversity can result from species‐specific responses to environmental fluctuations and from shifts in competitive hierarchies. Evolutionary adaptation of species to surrounding plant diversity could further decrease productivity variability.We used a three‐year dataset from a crop diversity experiment with seven species to assess the effect of crop diversity and selection history on temporal variability of yield.We found contrasting patterns of temporal variability: Yield of species varied more in mixtures than in monocultures over years. However, at community‐level, we found lower yield variability in crop mixtures compared to monocultures, although only in combination with fertilizer application under Mediterranean climate. Furthermore, we found that a mixture selection history can increase yield productivity and decrease its variability, although only in monocultures. This suggests that the interspecific interactions among crops in mixtures act as an evolutionary selective force, promoting niche complementarity.Synthesis. Our results highlight the ecological and evolutionary role of plant interactions in crop mixtures, which can affect yield stability, while also reflecting on the importance of climate and resource availability in modifying the diversity‐stability relationship. Restoration programmes that promote the functioning of restored ecosystems are in urgent demand. Although several biodiversity and ecosystem functioning (BEF) experiments have demonstrated the importance of functional complementarity in enhancing plant community performance, no biodiversity experiment has yet manipulated facilitation to test its contribution to how the complementarity effect (CE) modulates community performance.We built a restoration experiment manipulating diversity and facilitation potential in a tropical semi‐arid forest. We planted 4704 seedlings of 16 native tree species to assemble 147 experimental communities with 45 different compositions comprising 1, 2, 4, 8 or 16 species. Facilitation potential was included in the experimental design by creating a gradient of communities from low to high facilitation potential (based on prior research). We measured functional dispersion and functional identity using species above‐ and below‐ground traits to investigate how they modulate the effects of species diversity and facilitation potential on leaf biomass production, using the additive partition biodiversity effects CE and selection effect (SE).The joint influence of diversity and facilitation potential was tested separately for leaf biomass production and net biodiversity effect using linear mixed models (LMMs). We subsequently ran LMMs including functional dispersion and functional identity. We hypothesised that facilitation potential would increase community productivity and functioning and that functional dispersion and functional identity related to above‐ and below‐ground traits would explain facilitation performance.Facilitation potential positively influenced leaf biomass production as predicted, but unexpectedly, neither of the functional traits were important for modulating the facilitation process. Positive values for CE showed that plants performed better in mixtures in comparison to monocultures. SE negative values, showed that species with below average performance in monocultures, performed better in mixtures. Unexpectedly, CE did not increase as species diversity or facilitation potential increased. The SE was influenced negatively by facilitation potential leading to a more equal distribution of biomass production between species in mixtures.Synthesis. Facilitation improves biomass production in restored communities and increases biomass equitability among plant species and thus ecosystem reliability. Amami‐Oshima and Tokunoshima Islands (the Amami Islands) are part of an important area for biogeography in Japan. Although the uniqueness of the islands' flora is well recognized, their plant diversity, including non‐tree life forms, has yet to be compared with that of other regions. Here, we characterize the plant community structure of the Amami Islands, and analyze the α and β diversity patterns with respect to environmental factors as well as the frequency of threatened and endemic species compared with that in regions at higher and lower latitudes. We used 5 × 100 m plots at seven sites on the Amami Islands, three sites further north, and one site further south to record the abundance of all vascular plant species and tree sizes. We also used tree census data from five plots from the Monitoring Sites 1000 Project. Three principal components from five environmental variables were used as factors affecting diversity. We found that the broad‐leaved evergreen forests on the Amami Islands have higher α diversity resulting from species richness anomalies in shared families among regions. Additionally, generalized linear mixed models indicated that temperature and altitude affect α diversity positively. Furthermore, multiple regression models on distance matrices showed that temperature and regional differences in weather conditions affect β diversity. Tree species were found to affect species diversity and rareness, but herbaceous plants also affect these parameters substantially. These results indicate that the two studied islands are biodiversity hotspots and that evaluating herbaceous species is important for determining forest biodiversity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Biomonitoring of plant communities is essential when evaluating outcomes of ecological restoration, but morphology‐based inventories can impede consistency across spatial and temporal scales. The Eden Project botanic garden (Cornwall, UK) offers an opportunity to test whether soil environmental DNA (eDNA) reflects plant species richness, community composition, and diversity. Furthermore, it enables the exploration of whether community complexity, environmental conditions, or sampling scale influence the similarity of soil eDNA‐derived results compared with those derived from classic botanical inventories. Survey plots were established encompassing a mixture of high‐ and low‐complexity plant assemblages, under either hot and humid or cool and dry conditions. Botanical inventories were conducted in quadrats up to 7 m around a soil eDNA sample plot. Soil samples were processed by metabarcoding of trnL p6 loop to determine plant eDNA identity and relative abundance. Differences in diversity and community composition were calculated before determining whether (1) inventory scale; (2) plant assembly complexity; (3) ambient conditions; (4) soil chemistry; (5) bulk root biomass and (6) soil respiration influenced the similarity of soil eDNA and botanical inventory methods. Inventory scale significantly determined the dissimilarity in both diversity and composition, with soil respiration, phosphorus, and C:N ratio also accounting for variation across sites. Our results demonstrate that soil eDNA metabarcoding is an effective approach for quantifying relative diversity in plant communities across broad habitat types and could be integrated into restoration monitoring strategies, but that its application requires an appropriate a priori knowledge of survey sites to best tailor soil eDNA survey implementation. Phenology has long been hypothesized as an avenue for niche partitioning or interspecific facilitation, both promoting species coexistence. Tropical plant communities exhibit striking diversity in reproductive phenology, but many are also noted for large synchronous reproductive events. Here we study whether the phenology of seed fall in such communities is nonrandom, the temporal scales of phenological patterns, and ecological factors that drive reproductive phenology. We applied multivariate wavelet analysis to test for phenological synchrony versus compensatory dynamics (i.e., antisynchronous patterns where one species' decline is compensated by the rise of another) among species and across temporal scales. We used data from long‐term seed rain monitoring of hyperdiverse plant communities in the western Amazon. We found significant synchronous whole‐community phenology at multiple timescales, consistent with shared environmental responses or positive interactions among species. We also observed both compensatory and synchronous phenology within groups of species (confamilials) likely to share traits and seed dispersal mechanisms. Wind‐dispersed species exhibited significant synchrony at ~6‐month scales, suggesting these species might share phenological niches to match the seasonality of wind. Our results suggest that community phenology is shaped by shared environmental responses but that the diversity of tropical plant phenology may partly result from temporal niche partitioning. Questions: Our study focused on spontaneous vegetation in urban greenspaces in a Mediterranean city with the aim of relating plant community properties with ecological services along soil disturbance gradients. We asked which plant communities have the greatest plant biodiversity and soil carbon storage and the best‐performing nutrient cycles and water regulation. Location: Madrid City (Central Spain). Methods: We studied four types of plant communities following soil disturbance gradients: vegetation on trampled soils, roadside vegetation, annual grasslands and perennial forbs. Regarding vegetation, we studied plant composition and productivity, plant diversity, plant growth forms and functional groups. Regarding soils, we determined soil organic carbon (TOC), available nutrients, the activity of seven enzymes relating to the main macronutrient cycles, and physical properties such as bulk density (BD) and soil water‐holding capacity (WHC). We used one‐way ANOVA to determine the influence of the plant community type on both soil and vegetation variables. Canonical correspondence analysis was performed to interpret the relationships between plant species assemblages with environmental gradients. Results: Perennial forbs showed greater biomass and developed on soils with the greatest TOC and available phosphorus. Annual grasslands displayed the highest plant diversity. Roadside vegetation developed on soils with higher phenoloxidase activity when compared to vegetation on trampled soils and annual grasslands. Vegetation on trampled soils developed on soils with lower WHC, lower beta‐glucosidase, arylamidase and phosphatase activities and higher BD when compared to perennial forbs. Plant community distribution followed gradients most significantly associated with soil organic matter content, soil compaction and nutrient cycling performance. Conclusions: We conclude that plant communities are good indicators of ecosystem function and services which are unevenly distributed throughout urban habitats. The management in Mediterranean unmaintained urban greenspaces should be aimed at avoiding soil compaction to promote biodiversity, carbon storage and water regulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The identification of drivers of bioelement concentrations in plant communities is crucial for our understanding of ecosystem functioning. In this respect, soil nutrients, plant biodiversity and functional groups are reported to affect the plant community bioelement composition. However, given the predominant focus on species richness and single elements (or stoichiometric ratios) so far, only little is known about the patterns of the whole suite of bioelements at the community level and whether these patterns can be predicted by evolutionary relationships between co‐occurring species (phylogenetic diversity). To explore this knowledge gap, we used a comprehensive dataset of soil nutrients, plant community composition, phylogeny and aboveground tissue bioelement data from experimental sites established in central European semi‐natural grasslands. Plant community bioelement composition was strongly and exponentially related to community calcium and magnesium (bioelements reflecting deep phylogenetic differences). Plant community bioelement composition and stoichiometry were best indicated by functional group composition (graminoids and forbs) and phylogenetic regularity, whereas phylogenetic richness, phylogenetic divergence and species richness were poor predictors. Bioelement‐rich communities were poor in graminoids and rich in forbs, and tended to have evenly distributed phylogenetic distances (high regularity). No confounding effect of soil nutrients was observed. The links between functional group composition, phylogenetic regularity and plant community bioelement composition suggest that functional groups and phylogenetic diversity are mechanistically connected to ecosystem functions, such as primary production, decomposition, biogeochemical cycling or plant–herbivore interactions, through bioelements. Peatland ecosystems are of global conservation and environmental importance storing globally significant amounts of ancient carbon, regulating regional temperatures and hydrological regimes, and supporting unique biodiversity. Livestock grazing, land‐use change, drainage, nutrient and acid deposition, and wildfire threaten the composition and function of many peatlands including those in the uplands of the United Kingdom. Presently, little is known about either the short‐ or long‐term effects of wildfires within these systems in the UK. Our study aimed to evaluate how plant communities respond to wildfires across a range of vegetation communities, soil types, and burn severities. We evaluated wildfire burn severity using the ground‐based Composite Burn Index adapted for treeless peatlands. Using paired burned–unburned plots, we quantified differences in the abundance of plant families and functional groups, vegetation diversity, and community composition. Multivariate differences in composition between burned and unburned areas were used as an index of community resilience to fire. Plots in heathland communities with shallow organic soils burned at the highest severities and had the greatest reductions in plant diversity and richness. There were significant declines in plot‐scale species richness and diversity with increasing burn severity. Graminoids were resilient to fire whilst Ericaceae tended to increase with higher severity. Bryophyte composition was substantially altered—pleurocarpous species declined and acrocarpous species increased with greater burn severity. Community resilience was related to ground layer burn severity with higher burn severity driving greater changes in communities. Wildfire effects on temperate peatlands are a function of fire weather and site environmental and ecological characteristics. Management policy should ensure that the risk of severe wildfires is mitigated to protect ecosystem function and biodiversity. The objectives were to quantify aboveground, belowground and dead wood carbon pools near Mayoko in the Chaillu massif of Republic of Congo and explore relationships between carbon storage and plant diversity of all growth forms. A total of 190 plots (25 m by 25 m) were sampled (5072 stems, 211 species) and data analysed using recommended central‐African forest allometric equations. Mean stem diameter at breast height was 33.6 cm, mean basal area 47.7 m2 ha−1 and mean density of individuals 407 ha−1. Mean aboveground carbon (AGC) ranged from 13.93–412.66 Mg C ha−1, belowground carbon from 2.86–96.97 Mg C ha−1 and dead wood from 0.00–7.59 Mg C ha−1. The maximum AGC value recorded in a plot was 916 Mg C ha−1. The analysis performed using phytosociological association as basis rather than broad vegetation type is unique. AGC values for undisturbed terra firme forest sites featured among the highest recorded for African tropical forests. Considering only tree diversity, a weak, yet significant, relationship existed between AGC and species richness, Shannon‐Wiener index of diversity and Fisher's alpha. However, if diversity of all plant growth forms is considered, no relationship between carbon and plant diversity existed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Positive plant diversity–productivity relationships are known to be driven by complementary resource use via differences in plant functional traits. Moreover, soil properties related to nutrient availability were shown to change with plant diversity over time; however, it is not well‐understood whether and how such plant diversity‐dependent soil changes and associated changes in functional traits contribute to positive diversity–productivity relationships in the long run. To test this, we investigated plant communities of different species richness (1, 2, 6, and 9 species) in a 15‐year‐old grassland biodiversity experiment. We determined community biomass production and biodiversity effects (net biodiversity [NEs], complementarity [CEs], and selection effects [SEs]), as well as community means of plant functional traits and soil properties. First, we tested how these variables changed along the plant diversity gradient and were related to each other. Then, we tested for direct and indirect effects of plant and soil variables influencing community biomass production and biodiversity effects. Community biomass production, NEs, CEs, SEs, plant height, root length density (RLD), and all soil property variables changed with plant diversity and the presence of the dominant grass species Arrhenatherum elatius (increase except for soil pH, which decreased). Plant height and RLD for plant functional traits, and soil pH and organic carbon concentration for soil properties, were the variables with the strongest influence on biomass production and biodiversity effects. Our results suggest that plant species richness and the presence of the dominant species, A. elatius, cause soil organic carbon to increase and soil pH to decrease over time, which increases nutrient availability favoring species with tall growth and dense root systems, resulting in higher biomass production in species‐rich communities. Here, we present an additional process that contributes to the strengthening positive diversity–productivity relationship, which may play a role alongside the widespread plant functional trait‐based explanation. The traditional grasslands that characterize the cultural landscapes of the Palaeartic mountain massifs represent biodiversity hotspots. Yet, they are currently threatened by the intensification of farming practices, notably excesses in fertilization and irrigation.We experimentally investigated the passive restoration of montane and subalpine hay meadows after 6 years of management intensification, with different levels of fertilization and irrigation, followed by 5 years of release of intensive management, that is, extensification. More specifically, relying on a full randomized block‐design replicated at 11 Swiss study sites constituted of extensively managed meadows, we exposed during 6 years (2010–2015) four 20 m diameter plots to three levels of intensification (low, medium and high inputs), while a fourth plot served as a control (no inputs). In the second phase of the experiment (2016–2020), all study meadows underwent farming extensification.We monitored total species richness and plant diversity (Simpson diversity), indicator plant species as well as the composition and variability of the plant communities based on Bray–Curtis dissimilarity distances.We found that total species richness decreased in the most intensified plots after 6 years of intensification, but all plots retrieved their baseline species richness after 5 years of re‐extensification. In addition, we found no difference between the years in plant diversity (Simpson diversity) among the treatments. Yet, intensification led to different plants communities' compositions in all three levels of intensification in 2015 compared to the extensive plots, and this structural difference remained after 5 years of re‐extensification.Synthesis and applications. Land‐use intensification induces a rapid impoverishment of the flora of mountain meadows. Our results demonstrate the potential of mountain hay meadows to passively restore plant species richness after re‐extensification; however, plants communities did not fully recover. Atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition is composed of both inorganic nitrogen (IN) and organic nitrogen (ON), and these sources of N may exhibit different impacts on ecosystems. However, our understanding of the impacts of N deposition is largely based on experimental gradients of INs or more rarely ONs. Thus, the effects of N deposition on ecosystem productivity and biodiversity may be biased. We explored the differential impacts of N addition with different IN:ON ratios (0:10, 3:7, 5:5, 7:3, and 10:0) on aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) of plant community and plant diversity in a typical temperate grassland with a long-term N addition experiment. Soil pH, litter biomass, soil IN concentration, and light penetration were measured to examine the potential mechanisms underlying species loss with N addition. Our results showed that N addition significantly increased plant community ANPP by 68.33%–105.50% and reduced species richness by 16.20%–37.99%. The IN:ON ratios showed no significant effects on plant community ANPP. However, IN-induced species richness loss was about 2.34 times of ON-induced richness loss. Soil pH was positively related to species richness, and they exhibited very similar response patterns to IN:ON ratios. It implies that soil acidification accounts for the different magnitudes of species loss with IN and ON additions. Overall, our study suggests that it might be reasonable to evaluate the effects of N deposition on plant community ANPP with either IN or ON addition. However, the evaluation of N deposition on biodiversity might be overestimated if only IN is added or underestimated if only ON is added. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The rapid biodiversity losses of the Anthropocene have motivated ecologists to understand how biodiversity affects infectious diseases. Spatial scale is thought to moderate negative biodiversity–disease relationships (i.e., dilution effects) in zoonotic diseases, whereas evidence from plant communities for an effect of scale remains limited, especially at local scales where the mechanisms (e.g., encounter reduction) underlying dilution effects actually work. Here, we tested how spatial scale affects the direction and magnitude of biodiversity–disease relationships. We utilized a 10‐year‐old nitrogen addition experiment in a Tibetan alpine meadow, with 0, 5, 10, and 15 g/m2 nitrogen addition treatments. Within the treatment plots, we arranged a total of 216 quadrats (of either 0.125 × 0.125 m, 0.25 × 0.25 m or 0.5 × 0.5 m size) to test how the sample area affects the relationship between plant species richness and foliar fungal disease severity. We found that the dilution effects were stronger in the 0.125 × 0.125 m and 0.25 × 0.25 m quadrats, compared with 0.5 × 0.5 m quadrats. There was a significant interaction between species richness and nitrogen addition in the 0.125 × 0.125 m and 0.25 × 0.25 m quadrats, indicating that a dilution effect was more easily observed under higher levels of nitrogen addition. Based on multigroup structural equation models, we found that even accounting for the direct impact of nitrogen addition (i.e., "nitrogen‐disease hypothesis"), the dilution effect still worked at the 0.125 × 0.125 m scale. Overall, these findings suggest that spatial scale directly determines the occurrence of dilution effects, and can partly explain the observed variation in biodiversity–disease relationships in grasslands. Aim: Assessing the performances of different sampling approaches for documenting community diversity may help to identify optimal sampling efforts and strategies, and to enhance conservation and monitoring planning. Here, we used two data sets based on probabilistic and preferential sampling schemes of Italian forest vegetation to analyze the multifaceted performances of the two approaches across three major forest types at a large scale. Location: Italy. Methods: We pooled 804 probabilistic and 16,259 preferential forest plots as samples of vascular plant diversity across the country. We balanced the two data sets in terms of sizes, plot size, geographical position, and vegetation types. For each of the two data sets, 1000 subsets of 201 random plots were compared by calculating the shared and exclusive indicator species, their overlap in the multivariate space, and the areas encompassed by spatially‐constrained rarefaction curves. We then calculated an index of performance using the ratio between the additional and total information collected by each sampling approach. The performances were tested and evaluated across the three major forest types. Results: The probabilistic approach performed better in estimating species richness and diversity of species assemblages, but did not detect other components of the regional diversity, such as azonal forests. The preferential approach outperformed the probabilistic approach in detecting forest‐specialist species and plant diversity hotspots. Conclusions: Using a novel workflow based on vegetation‐plot exclusivities and commonalities, our study suggests probabilistic and preferential sampling approaches are to be used in combination for better conservation and monitor planning purposes to detect multiple aspects of plant community diversity.
