In the United Kingdom and further afield, policy discourse has focused on the efficiencies technology will afford the care sector by increasing workforce capacity at a time when there are recruitment and retention issues. Previous research has explored the impact of telecare and other technologies on roles within the care sector, but issues related to job quality and the consequences of newer digital technologies that are increasingly being deployed in care settings are under researched. Through an exploration of the literature on robotics and empirical studies of telecare and mainstream 'smart' digital technology use in UK adult social care, this paper examines how these technologies are generating new forms of work and their implications for job quality, arguing the tendency to prioritise technology results in the creation 'machine babysitters' and 'fauxtomatons'. Underwater crime scene investigation and emergency response are tasks typically carried out by divers constituting part of a specialist team. Operating in such dynamic environments, often with poor visibility and risk of concealed hazards, can be time consuming and dangerous. Autonomous uncrewed vessels with underwater acoustic imaging sensors have been used for similar purposes in other fields (e.g., hydrography, naval mine countermeasures [MCMS], etc.) but have not been adopted in this specific application domain. The Police Robot for Inspection and Mapping of underwater Evidence (PRIME) is an autonomous uncrewed surface vessel that is being developed for this purpose. It is a novel application of existing robotic technology that is intended to be used within an end‐to‐end police and emergency underwater search process. It aims to enhance the effectiveness, efficiency, and safety of divers by autonomously locating and highlighting target objects or regions of interest, as well as benign regions, thereby reducing their time spent underwater. Side‐scan imaging sonars are used to sense the underwater environment using techniques leveraged from the similar application domain of naval MCMs. The system autonomously generates actionable intelligence in the form of simplified coverage and anomaly maps for easy interpretation by the dive team. These are communicated to shore in real‐time and georeferenced on satellite maps. This paper details the PRIME system prototype and presents results from initial field experimentation. The prototype has been operated in various urban, shallow‐water environments. The experimental results shown here were collected in Bristol Harbour (the UK) with a water depth of approximately 5 m. In the experiment, a clothed mannequin resembling a human body was deployed on the muddy floor. Autonomous searches were executed and the body was detected successfully as an anomaly against the background, illustrating the feasibility and viability of the system as an autonomous robotic aid for locating missing persons in a representative, unstructured, and dynamic real‐world environment. The Science and Religion Forum (SRF) seeks to be the premier organization promoting the discussion between science and religion in the United Kingdom for academics, professionals, and interested lay people. Each year, the SRF holds a conference tackling a topical issue, and in 2019 focused on artificial intelligence and robotics. Positioned within a hybrid of the human and technology, professional nursing practice has always occupied a space that is more than human. In nursing education, technology is central in providing tools with which practice knowledge is mobilized so that students can safely engage with simulated human patients without causing harm to real people. However, while there is an increased emphasis on deploying these simulated humans as emissaries from person-centred care to demonstrate what it is like to care for real humans, the nature of what is really going on in simulation-what is real and what is simulated-is very rarely discussed and poorly understood. This paper explores how elements of postcolonial critical thought can aid in understanding the challenges of educating nurses to provide person-centred care within a healthcare culture that is increasingly reliant on technology. Because nursing education is itself a hybrid of real and simulated practice, it provides an appropriate case study to explore the philosophical question of technology in healthcare discourse, particularly as it relates to the relationship between the human patient and its uncanny simulated double. Drawing on postcolonial elements such as the uncanny, diaspora, hybridity, and créolité, the hybrid conditions of nursing education are examined in order to open up new possibilities of thinking about how learning to care is entangled with this technological space to assist in shaping professional knowledge of person-centred care. Considering these issues through a postcolonial lens opens up questions about the nature of the difficulty in using simulated human technologies in clinical education, particularly with the paradoxical aim of providing person-centred care within a climate that increasingly characterized as posthuman. Technological advancement is seen as one way of sustainably intensifying agriculture. Scholars argue that innovation needs to be responsible, but it is difficult to anticipate the consequences of the 'fourth agricultural revolution' without a clear sense of which technologies are included and excluded. The major aims of this article were to investigate which technologies are being associated with the fourth agricultural revolution, as well as to understand how this revolution is being perceived, whether positive or negative consequences are given equal attention, and what type of impacts are anticipated. To this end, we undertook a content analysis of UK media and policy documents alongside interviews of farmers and advisers. We found that the fourth agricultural revolution is associated with emergent, game‐changing technologies, at least in media and policy documents. In these sources, the benefits to productivity and the environment were prioritised with less attention to social consequences, but impacts were overwhelmingly presented positively. Farmers and advisers experienced many benefits of technologies and some predicted higher‐tech futures. It was clear, however, that technologies create a number of negative consequences. We reflect on these findings and provide advice to policy‐makers about how to interrogate the benefits, opportunities, and risks afforded by agricultural technologies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Current debates around robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) are dominated by concerns over the threat to employment, amid widely varying estimates of potential job losses. Countries are expected to fare differently, but there is little comparative research that goes beyond analysing industry and occupational structures. This article rethinks 'country effects' by exploring the role of institutions and social actors in shaping technological change in Norway and the UK. Drawing upon interviews with technology experts, employer associations and trade unions, it examines their perspectives on public policy support for the development and diffusion of robotics and AI, along with potential consequences for employment, work and skills.
