1D ferroelectric nanostructures are promising for enhanced ferroelectric and piezoelectric performance on the nanoscale, however, their synthesis at the wafer scale using industrially compatible processes is challenging. In order to advance the nanostructure-based electronics, it is imperative to develop a silicon-compatible growth technique yielding high volumetric density and an ordered arrangement. Here, a major breakthrough is provided in addressing this need and ordered and close-packed single crystalline ferroelectric nanorod arrays, of composition PbZr0.52Ti0.48O3 (PZT), grown on commercial grade 3 in. silicon wafer are demonstrated. PZT nanorods exhibit enhanced piezoelectric and ferroelectric performance compared to thin films of similar dimensions. Sandwich structured architecture utilizing 1D PZT nanorod arrays and 2D reduced graphene oxide thin film electrodes is fabricated to provide electrical connection. To develop high‐performance nonlinear optical (NLO) materials for infrared (IR) applications, we have applied a rational element‐composition design strategy and investigated the unexplored PbO–PbCl2–PbI2 system. By doing so, we discovered a new polar lead mixed oxyhalide, Pb18O8Cl15I5, the first synthetic metal oxyhalide combining both Cl− and I−. Pb18O8Cl15I5 reveals an unprecedented structural feature with two different dimensional types of oxocentered Pb–O units, namely, [O4Pb8]8+ clusters and [OPb2]2+ chains. Centimeter‐sized single crystals of Pb18O8Cl15I5 have been successfully grown under ambient conditions. Remarkably, Pb18O8Cl15I5 satisfies all fundamental yet rigorous criteria for high‐performance IR NLO materials, exhibiting the widest IR transparency (up to 16.0 μm) among oxide‐based crystals, strong second‐harmonic generation response (1.05×AgGaS2), superior birefringence (0.086 at 636 nm), and a high laser‐induced damage threshold (8.5×AgGaS2). A π‐extended, diaza‐triphenylene embedded, mono‐anionic corrole analogue and its NiII complex were synthesized from a diaza‐triphenylene precursor, which was obtained from a double one‐carbon insertion into a naphthobipyrrole diester. Following conversion to the corresponding activated diol and acid‐catalyzed condensation with pyrrole, subsequent reaction with pentafluorobenzaldehyde afforded mono‐anionic, π‐extended bipyricorrole‐like macrocycle. Attempted NiII insertion with Ni(OAc)2 ⋅ 4H2O resulted an ESR active, NiII bipyricorrole radical complex, which was converted to a stable cationic NiII complex upon treatment with [(Et3O)+(SbCl6)−]. Both complexes were characterized by 1H and 13C NMR, UV/Vis spectroscopy and single crystal X‐ray diffraction analysis. The NiII bipyricorrole radical complex is converted to a cationic NiII complex by single‐electron reduction using cobaltocene. Both the cationic NiII complex and the radical NiII complex exhibited ligand‐centered redox behavior, whereas the NiII remains in the +2 oxidation state. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: A nonlinear optical (NLO) carbonatoperoxovanadate, Rb3VO(O2)2CO3, was synthesized through a simple solution‐evaporation method in phase‐pure form. Single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction revealed that the structure of Rb3VO(O2)2CO3 consists of important noncentrosymmetric (NCS) chromophores, that is, π‐delocalized (CO3)2− groups, a second‐order Jahn–Teller (SOJT) distortive V5+ cation, and π‐localized distorted O22− groups, as well as charge‐balancing polarizable Rb+ ions. The powder second‐harmonic generation (SHG) measurements indicated that Rb3VO(O2)2CO3 is phase‐matchable (Type I) and exhibits a remarkably strong SHG response circa 21.0 times that of potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP), which is the largest efficiency observed among carbonate NLO materials. First‐principles calculation analysis suggests that the extremely large SHG response of Rb3VO(O2)2CO3 is attributed to the synergistic effect of the cooperation of all the constituting NCS chromophores. A meticulously designed, polar, non-centrosymmetric lead borate chloride, Pb2BO3Cl, was synthesized using KBe2BO3F2 (KBBF) as a model. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction revealed that the structure of Pb2BO3Cl consists of cationic [Pb2(BO3)]+ honeycomb layers and Cl− anions. Powder second harmonic generation (SHG) measurements on graded polycrystalline Pb2BO3Cl indicated that the title compound is phase-matchable (type I) and exhibits a remarkably strong SHG response, which is approximately nine times stronger than that of potassium dihydrogen phosphate, and the largest efficiency observed in materials with structures similar to KBBF.
