This paper reports on the employment migration behavior of non‐White ethnic minority graduates in the United Kingdom for the 2018/2019 graduation cohort, which is the last cohort to enter the labor market before the COVID‐19 pandemic. Using data from the new Graduate Outcomes survey and controlling for a rich set of background characteristics, the findings indicate that ethnic minority graduates are more likely than their White counterparts to find work in ethnically diverse areas of the United Kingdom after leaving higher education. An identity utility framework is then formalized that combines identity economics with traditional approaches of human capital theory and job search theory. A test of an ethnic identity‐based hypothesis reveals that Asian, Black, and Mixed‐background graduates are comparatively more likely to migrate to areas with higher ethnic diversity levels, rather than less diverse areas. In addition to traditional explanations based on human capital theory and job search theory, this paper argues that these patterns are best explained by ethnic identity norms, which introduce a preference for working in ethnically diverse places. However, the results should be interpreted with some caution because of concerns related to heterogeneity within the ethnic group classifications used in the paper and possible omitted and unobserved variables. Nearly three decades ago, Gramling and Freudenburg (1996) urged that greater attention be given to middle‐range efforts in environmental sociology. In this article, I will argue that since Gramling and Freudenburg offered their advice, there has been a critical mass of work in environmental sociology undertaken from the perspective of middle‐range theory, but this has been undervalued in our never‐ending odyssey in search for grand theory. To illustrate this, I review sociological enquiry into risk and risk communication. To make a case of my own for a middle‐range sociology appropriate to the second quartile of the 21st century, I advocate the development of a "sociology of environmental morality" (see Farrell, 2015; Hannigan forthcoming, 2024; Stock, 2020) to be pursued via a middle‐range perspective. Though researchers working on congenital aphantasia (henceforth "aphantasia") agree that this condition involves an impairment in the ability to voluntarily generate visual imagery, disagreement looms large as to which other impairments are exhibited by aphantasic subjects. This article offers the first extensive review of studies on aphantasia, and proposes that aphantasic subjects exhibit a cluster of impairments. It puts forward a novel cognitive theory of aphantasia, building on the constructive episodic simulation hypothesis of memory and imagination. It argues that aphantasia is best explained as a malfunction of processes in the episodic system, and is therefore an episodic system condition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Temporal self‐regulation theory was developed to address an observed intention‐behaviour gap across behaviours. However, a synthesis of studies has not yet been conducted to investigate the theory's utility to explain behaviour and bridge the intention‐behaviour gap. This review aimed to evaluate the predictive ability of temporal self‐regulation theory to understanding behaviour and pre‐registered at PROSPERO (ID: CRD42021253174). Method: Forward citation searches on the original theory publication through Google Scholar until May 2021 identified 37 eligible articles, including, 12,555 participants assessing at least two of the three theory constructs. Random‐effects meta‐analyses assessed the strength of associations between theory constructs on behaviour and random effects meta‐regressions assessed moderators of behaviour. Results: Findings provide support for temporal self‐regulation theory to explain behaviour with very weak (self‐regulatory capacity r =.039, CI =.00, –.07) to moderate (intention r =.331, CI =.26,.40; behavioural pre‐potency r =.379, CI =.32,.44) effect sizes. Further, the strength of associations varied across behaviour types and contexts. However, there was high heterogeneity across studies and some moderating effects could not be assessed due to insufficient numbers of studies assessing interactions. Conclusions: We urge researchers to assess and report interactions for better understanding of the drivers of behaviour to develop effective interventions for positive behaviour change. Summary: This paper focuses on the parameter estimation issues of multivariate equation‐error autoregressive moving average systems. By applying the gradient search and the multi‐innovation theory, we derive a multi‐innovation gradient based iterative (MI‐GI) algorithm. In order to improve the computational efficiency and the parameter estimation accuracy, a filtering and decomposition based gradient iterative (F‐D‐GI) algorithm is presented by using the data filtering technique and the decomposition technique. The key is to choose an appropriate filter to filter the input‐output data and to transform an original system into several subsystems. Compared with the MI‐GI algorithm, the F‐D‐GI algorithm can generate more accurate parameter estimates. Optically addressable defects in wide‐bandgap semiconductors are of considerable interest as materials platforms for quantum sensing and information systems. Density functional theory is used to identify novel defects in diamond consisting of transition metal + nitrogen complexes with potential for quantum sensing. Defects are characterized with respect to formation energy, ordering and degeneracy of the defect energy levels, optical and charge transition energies, zero‐field‐splitting energies, and thermodynamic stability. Novel defect sites with optically addressable spin states and viable spin sublevel configurations are identified, and analysis of activation energies for atomic migration indicates stability in the lattice. Some international pharmaceutical companies have succeeded in producing vaccines against COVID‐19. Countries all over the world have aimed to obtain these vaccines with minimum cost. We consider a set of K‐independent Markovian waiting lists. Each list contains a set of countries, where each one of them has an exponential service time and a Poisson arrival process. These companies differ in some characteristics such as the vaccine production cost and the speed of the required quantity delivery. We present a new detection model that helps in providing an appropriate decision to choose a suitable company. Moreover, the concept of balking and the retention of reneged countries is taken into consideration under the quality control process of each waiting list. Under steady state, we face an interesting and difficult discrete stochastic optimization problem. Its solution gives an optimal distribution of the searching effort, which is bounded by a known probability distribution. A simulation study has been derived to get the minimum value of the paid cost random values. The highest service rate, the total expected profit of each queuing system, and the optimum performance measures, which depend on this cost, have been obtained to show the effectiveness of this model. Recent experimental observation of the first bilayer clusters B48−/0 reveals a new structural domain in boron nanostructures. Inspired by the previously reported bilayer B48, B54, B60, and B62 and based on extensive global‐minimum searches and density‐functional theory calculations, we predict herein a new series of medium‐sized bilayer boron nanoclusters C2 B64 (I), D2 B66 (II), D2 B68 (III), C1 B70 (IV), and Ci B72 (V) which all contain an elongated B46 bilayer hexagonal prism at the center with four effective interlayer 2c–2e B−B σ bonds formed between the top and bottom layers and the bilayer to core‐shell structural transition at B74 where core‐shell species start to dominate in thermodynamics, defining the up‐limit of the bilayer boron nanoclusters at B72. The newly obtained bilayer C2 B64 (I), D2 B68 (III), and C1 B70 (IV) appear to be systematically more stable than the previously reported cage‐like D4d B64, core‐shell C1 B68, and quasi‐planar C3v B70, respectively. Detailed bonding analyses indicate that these bilayer species follow the universal bonding pattern of σ+π double delocalization, rendering three‐dimensional aromaticity to the systems. This article exploits positive systems theory in the search for Zames–Falb multipliers for the analysis of discrete‐time Lurie systems, where the nonlinearity is assumed to be slope‐restricted. Although a similar problem has been tackled in a continuous time context, the results in discrete‐time take a different form and require a somewhat different approach to overcome certain technical problems. The work has two compelling features: (i) the arising algorithms are completely convex; and (ii) numerical results compare well with the state‐of‐the‐art in some cases, providing the least conservative result in one instance. Boron nanoclusters and few‐layer borophenes have received considerable attention in recent years due to their unique structural and bonding patterns. Based on extensive global searches and density‐functional theory calculations, we present herein the possibility of a new series of bilayer medium‐sized boron clusters including C2 B54 (I), C2h B60 (II), and C1 B62 (III) in a universal structural pattern, with one, two, and three B6 hexagonal windows on the waist around a B38 bilayer hexagonal prism at the center, respectively. Detailed orbital and bonding analyses indicate that these three‐dimensional aromatic bilayer clusters follow the σ + π double delocalization bonding pattern, with three or four effective interlayer B–B σ‐bonds formed to further stabilize the system. The present study examined the factor structure of the Kaufman assessment battery for children‐second edition normative update with normative sample participants aged 7–18 years (N = 500) using confirmatory factor analysis with maximum likelihood estimation and multidimensional scaling procedures. For the 10 subtest Cattell‐Horn‐Carroll core battery configuration, an alternative hierarchical model with four group‐specific factors (crystallized ability, perceptual reasoning, short‐term memory, and long‐term storage and retrieval) provided the best fit to the normative data for both age groups. These results suggest caution for interpreting the visual processing and fluid reasoning index scores in isolation given the inability to locate those constructs independently at school‐age. Implications for the clinical interpretation of the measurement instrument moving forward are discussed. The requirement for literature searches that identify studies for inclusion in systematic reviews should be systematic, explicit, and reproducible extends, at least by implication, to other types of literature review. However, realist reviews commonly require literature searches that challenge systematic reporting; searches are iterative and involve multiple search strategies and approaches. Notwithstanding these challenges, reporting of the "realist search" can be structured to be transparent and to facilitate identification of innovative retrieval practices. Our six‐component search framework consolidates and extends the structure advanced by Pawson, one of the originators of realist review: formulating the question, conducting the background search, searching for program theory, searching for empirical studies, searching to refine program theory and identifying relevant mid‐range theory, and documenting and reporting the search process. This study reviews reports of search methods in 34 realist reviews published within the calendar year of 2016. Data from all eligible reviews were extracted from the search framework. Realist search reports poorly differentiate between the different search components. Review teams often conduct a single "big bang" multipurpose search to fulfill multiple functions within the review. However, it is acknowledged that realist searches are likely to be iterative and responsive to emergent data. Overall, the search for empirical studies appears most comprehensive in conduct and reporting detail. In contrast, searches to identify and refine program theory are poorly conducted, if at all, and poorly reported. To obtain the best pooling effect and higher accuracy in image recognition, an improved method based on optimal search theory for the pooling layer of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) is proposed. The purpose is to solve the problems of the traditional pooling method, namely that it is too simplistic and it is difficult to extract effective features. The basic principle and network structure of CNN are introduced in the study. A new optimum‐pooling method is proposed, and the authors study how to obtain the maximum probability to detect the target function under the constrained condition. Comparison experiments of different pooling methods are performed on three widely used datasets: LFW, CIFAR‐10, and ImageNet. The experimental results show that the proposed method has the characteristics of more effective feature extraction and wide adaptability, and leads to higher accuracy and lower error rate in image recognition. In this study, neuro‐fuzzy‐based identification procedure for Hammerstein model with coloured noise is presented. Separable signal is used to realise the decoupling of the identification of dynamic linear part from that of static non‐linear part, and then correlation analysis method is adopted to identify the parameters of the linear part. Furthermore, by combining multi‐innovation and gradient search theory, multi‐innovation‐based extended stochastic gradient approach is derived for improving the parameters estimation accuracy of the non‐linear part and the noise model. In addition, the convergence analysis in the martingale theory illustrates that the parameter estimation error will converge to zero under the persistent excitation condition. We exploit cross-sectional and temporal differences in search intensity in order to examine the relationship between search costs and price dispersion using a hand-collected panel data set from Jerusalem's Shuk Mahane Yehuda outdoor market. We present empirical evidence that price dispersion increases with the cost of search using several different measures of price dispersion; however, our interpretation of this finding is sensitive to the search proxy in question. We also address several acute difficulties facing empiricists seeking to test theoretical price-dispersion models in which consumers are heterogeneous in their search behavior. As interfaith marriage has become more common, religion is thought to be less important for sorting partners. Nevertheless, prior studies on religious assortative mating use samples of prevailing marriages, which miss how local marriage markets shape both partner selection and marriage timing. Drawing on search theory and data from 8,699 young adults (ages 18-31 years) in the National Longitudinal Study of Youth 1997, the author examined the association between the concentration of coreligionists in local marriage markets and marriage timing and partner selection using event history methods. Religious concentration is associated with higher odds of transitioning to marriage and religious homogamy (conditional on marriage) for women and men at older ages (24-31 years) but not at younger ages (18-23 years). The association was also stronger for non-Hispanic Whites when compared with other racial and ethnic groups. Hester SM, Brooks SJ, Cacho OJ & Panetta FD (2010). Applying a simulation model to the management of an infestation of Miconia calvescens in the wet tropics of Australia. Weed Research 50, 269–279. A simulation model that combines biological, search and economic components is applied to the eradication of a Miconia calvescens infestation at El Arish in tropical Queensland, Australia. Information on the year M. calvescens was introduced to the site, the number of plants controlled and the timing of control, is used to show that currently there could be M. calvescens plants remaining undetected at the site, including some mature plants. Modelling results indicate that the eradication programme has had a significant impact on the population of M. calvescens, as shown by simulated results for uncontrolled and controlled populations. The model was also used to investigate the effect of changing search effort on the cost of and time to eradication. Control costs were found to be negligible over all levels of search effort tested. Importantly, results suggest eradication may be achieved within several decades, if resources are increased slightly from their current levels and if there is a long-term commitment to funding the eradication programme. This study simultaneously evaluates confirmatory information search theory and dual-process theory in a selection process that uses reference letters as the evaluation tool. Confirmatory information search suggests that evaluators give attention to information that is congruent with first impressions. Dual-processes theory suggests that evaluators give attention to information that is incongruent with first impressions. Using a sample of undergraduate students, in two separate experiments, we found that a poor impression from the résumé led to more positive information and less negative information searching in reference letters than did a good impression. This paper introduces a new heuristic approach, the maximum priority index (MPI) method, for severely constrained item selection in computerized adaptive testing. Our simulation study shows that it is able to accommodate various non-statistical constraints simultaneously, such as content balancing, exposure control, answer key balancing, and so on. Compared with the weighted deviation modelling method, it leads to fewer constraint violations and better exposure control while maintaining the same level of measurement precision. 1. Predators hunting by sight often search for prey from elevated perches or hovering positions above the prey habitat. Theory suggests that prey visibility depends strongly on predator perch height and distance, but their quantitative effects have not been experimentally tested in natural habitats. 2. We estimate for the first time how prey visibility depends on predator perch height, distance and vegetation height in an open natural habitat, based on visibility measurements of two targets: a mounted bird and a graduated plate, from five perch heights (0·2–8 m) and six distances (5–120 m). 3. For both targets, their proportion visible increases strongly with observer perch height and proximity. From the lowest perch, visibility of the target bird declines to <5% beyond 20 m distance, but 40% of it remains visible from the highest perch even at 120 m. 4. Models of predator search suggest that hunting success and predation rate depend strongly on the prey detection rate, which is expected to decline with distance r approximately as r− d. However, d, the distance decay parameter, has not previously been empirically estimated in natural predator habitats. For distance – prey visibility relationships similar to those observed here, we find a realistic estimate of d to be 2·1–2·4. 5. The results demonstrate the crucial role of relative perch and vegetation height for prey visibility, which is of relevance for habitat management. The strong increase of prey visibility with predator search height suggests that removal of predator perches can improve the survival of endangered prey populations in open habitats. Biologists have repeatedly rediscovered classical models from physics predicting collision rates in an ideal gas. These models, and their two-dimensional analogues, have been used to predict rates and durations of encounters among animals or social groups that move randomly and independently, given population density, velocity, and distance at which an encounter occurs. They have helped to separate cases of mixed-species association based on behavioural attraction from those that simply reflect high population densities, and to detect cases of attraction or avoidance among conspecifics. They have been used to estimate the impact of population density, speeds of movement and size on rates of encounter between members of the opposite sex, between gametes, between predators and prey, and between observers and the individuals that they are counting. One limitation of published models has been that they predict rates of encounter, but give no means of determining whether observations differ significantly from predictions. Another uncertainty is the robustness of the predictions when animal movements deviate from the model’s assumptions in specific, biologically relevant ways. Here, we review applications of the ideal gas model, derive extensions of the model to cover some more realistic movement patterns, correct several errors that have arisen in the literature, and show how to generate confidence limits for expected rates of encounter among independently moving individuals. We illustrate these results using data from mangabey monkeys originally used along with the ideal gas model to argue that groups avoid each other. Although agent-based simulations provide a more flexible alternative approach, the ideal gas model remains both a valuable null model and a useful, less onerous, approximation to biological reality. This paper examines recent evidence on the role that gasoline margins and volatility play in the asymmetric response of gasoline prices to changes in oil prices at different stages of distribution process. In a regression model with margins, we find that margins are statistically significant in explaining asymmetry between crude oil and spot gasoline prices, spot gasoline prices and wholesale gasoline prices, and wholesale gasoline prices and retail prices. In a regression model with input volatility, we find evidence that volatility is responsible for asymmetry between wholesale gasoline prices and retail gasoline prices. When both, gasoline margins and gasoline volatility are included in the regression, we find evidence supporting margins, the search theory, volatility, the oligopolistic coordination theory and an explanation of asymmetry. This paper argues that search theory is a useful addition to the way economists and geographers have approached the study of commuting behavior. This is illustrated by showing that introduction of a spatial element into the standard model of job search leads to the prediction of critical isochrones. Moreover, in the context of an urban economy with decentralized employment, the spatial search model predicts excess commuting. Search theory also suggests that regression toward the mean may play a confusing role in data describing the development of commutes over time, such as has been used in recent empirical work. Finally, the paper develops a simple spatial equilibrium search model in which employers set their wages optimally and searchers determine their reservation wages optimally in mutually consistent ways. Search theory predicts that females will use information on search costs and the characteristics of potential mates to adjust their search behavior and mate choices. We examined the effect of previous acoustic experience on female mating responses in the variable field cricket Gryllus lineaticeps. Females of this species prefer calling songs with higher chirp rates to those with lower chirp rates. In this study we examined how female responses to male calling songs change with experience by measuring the responses of females to male calls over a sequence of three trials. Females in one group (group I) were exposed to a sequence of three identical low chirp rate songs and females in a second group (group II) were exposed to two identical low chirp rate songs interspersed by a high chirp rate song. Females in group I did not show a significant difference in their responses to the initial and final low chirp rate presentations, whereas females in group II showed a significantly reduced response to the final low chirp rate song. In addition, the degree to which female responses to the initial and final low chirp rate song changed differed significantly between the treatment groups. Thus acoustic experience appears to affect female mating preferences in this species; exposure to either more attractive songs or more variable songs makes normally unattractive songs even less attractive. These results suggest that females do not use a fixed-threshold search rule in which they mate with any male with a phenotype that exceeds a given threshold. Instead, G. lineaticeps females appear to use a more complex search rule in which they adjust their searching behavior based on the local distribution of male phenotypes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper investigates the degree of shortfall between the wages workers earn and what they could earn assuming perfect or costless information in the labor market. We use the stochastic frontier regression technique to estimate the degree of shortfall found in wages on an individual basis. The paper tests, in addition, a number of hypotheses supplied by search theory in this context. The results generally confirm the propositions from search theory and indicate that, on the average, worker wages fall short of worker potential wages by approximately 10 percent. The structural and electronic properties of ternary AlxTiyNiz clusters, where x, y, and z are integers and x + y + z = 6, are investigated. Both Slater, Vosko, Wilks, and Nusair and B3LYP exchange‐correlation (XC) functionals are employed in a two‐stage density functional theory (DFT) calculations to generate these clusters. In the first stage, a minimum energy cluster structure is generated by an unbiased global search algorithm coupled with a DFT code using a light XC functional and small basis sets. In the second stage, the obtained cluster structure is further optimized by another round of global minimization search coupled with a DFT calculator using a heavier XC functional and more costly basis set. Electronic properties of the structures are illustrated in the form of a ternary diagram. Our DFT calculations find that the thermodynamic stability of the clusters increases with the increment in the number of constituent nickel atoms. When prey is patchily distributed, predators are expected to spend more time searching for food in proximity of recent prey captures before searching in other areas. This behavior, known as area‐restricted search, results in predators remaining localized in areas where prey had been detected previously because of the higher probability of encountering additional prey. However, few studies have tested these predictions on marine species because of the difficulties of observing feeding behavior. In this study, we utilized passive acoustic detections of echolocating dolphins to identify foraging behavior. C‐PODs (click train detectors) were deployed for two years with an acoustic recorder attached to the same mooring during the second year. The time series of feeding buzzes, indicative of foraging behavior, revealed that both bottlenose (Tursiops truncatus) and common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) were more likely to stay in the area longer when foraging activity was high at the beginning of the encounter. The probability of foraging was also higher following previous foraging activity. This suggests that dolphins were feeding on spatially patchy prey and previous foraging experience influenced their movement behavior. Structural and electronic properties of ternary clusters AlkTilNim, where k, l, and m are integers and k + l + m = 4, are investigated. These clusters are generated and studied by performing a two‐stage density functional theory (DFT) calculations using the Slater, Vosko, Wilks, and Nusair (SVWN) and Becke three‐parameter, Lee‐Yang‐Parr (B3LYP) functional exchange correlations. In the first stage, an unbiased global search algorithm coupled with a DFT code with a light exchange‐correlation and smaller basis sets are used to generate the lowest energy cluster structures. It is then followed by further optimization using another round of DFT calculation with heavy exchanged correlations and large basis set. Electronic properties of the structures obtained via the two‐stage procedure are then studied via DFT calculations. The results are illustrated in the form of ternary diagram. Our DFT calculations find that the stability of the cluster increases with the increase in the number of nickel atoms inside the clusters. Our findings provide new insight into the ternary metallic cluster through the structure, stability, chemical order, and electronic properties studies. Trimetallic nanoclusters are commonly studied for their interesting electronic and magnetic properties. However, there studies on this type of clusters with more than four atoms, conducted using unbiased initial configuration search, are rare and therefore timely.
