Shallow magma transfer is difficult to detect at poorly monitored volcanoes. Magma transfer before the last 1538 eruption at Campi Flegrei caldera (Italy) was exceptionally tracked using historical, archeological, and geological data. Here, we extend that data set to 1650 to uncover any magma transfer during post‐eruptive subsidence. Results show two post‐eruptive subsidence phases, separated by a previously undocumented uplift during 1540–1582. Uplift highlights the pressurization of the central (∼3.5 km depth) and peripheral (∼1 km depth) pre‐eruptive sources, suggesting an aborted eruption. The subsidence events mainly require the depressurization of the central source and pressurization of a deeper magmatic layer (∼8 km depth). Therefore, despite the overall post‐eruptive deflation, after 1538 the deeper reservoir experienced continuous magma supply, with magma almost erupting between 1540 and 1582, challenging the common assumption of post‐eruptive deflation. This underlies the importance of monitoring the deeper magmatic systems, also after eruptions, to properly assess their eruptive potential. However, very little is known about the pre‐ and post‐eruptive behavior of volcanoes before the instrumental era. Here, we present a unique set of archeological records related to the elevation changes at Campi Flegrei caldera (Italy) during 1515–1650, mainly focusing on its behavior after the last 1538 eruption at Monte Nuovo. After the eruption, subsidence occurred from 1538 to 1540, followed, from 1540 to 1582, by a previously unreported uplift; the latter was followed by renewed subsidence until 1650 at least. Modeling the sources responsible for the deformation, we find that, despite the depressurization of shallow sources, after 1538, a deeper magmatic layer (∼8 km depth) experienced continuous magma supply, with magma almost erupting between 1540 and 1582. This questions the common notion of post‐1538 deflation at Campi Flegrei, where the depressurization of the shallower sources masks the pressurization of the deeper magmatic system for more than a century. Reviews of Geophysics is an AGU journal, first established in February 1963. It is a hybrid open access invitation-only journal that publishes comprehensive review articles across various disciplines within the Earth and Space Sciences. The selection criteria are rigorous and many submissions are declined without review. The journal is the highest ranked in the fields of Geochemistry and Geophysics, with a high Journal Impact Factor (JIF2021 = 24.9), which is indicative of its high visibility and influence within the scientific community. The journal's published review papers, beyond a mere summary of literature, provide crucial context for current work, and establish the framework for comprehensive understanding of research progress, challenges, and interconnections between different communities, so that research may be appreciated by a broad audience. We emphasize the importance of publishing studies that provide a comprehensive overview and synthesis of the current state of knowledge in a field, especially in the case of geophysics, where knowledge is rapidly developing, increasing and becoming more specialized. Previous work at Fernandina, the most active volcano of the Western Galápagos (Ecuador), revealed evidence for both a shallow and a deep magma reservoir, but the relative contribution of the two reservoirs to eruptions remains unclear. Here we investigate the September 2017 circumferential eruption and the June 2018 radial eruption using interferometric synthetic aperture radar data and geodetic modeling. Our results show that during the 2017 eruption magma was simultaneously withdrawn from the deep reservoir, injected upwards through the shallow reservoir, and then fed the circumferential feeder dike to the SW of the caldera. Two episodes of inflow of new magma occurred in both the deep and shallow magma reservoirs in the inter‐eruptive period from December 2017 to May 2018. During the 2018 eruption, both reservoirs fed two radial feeder dikes below the north flank, probably interacting with an underlying peripheral melt pocket, and an inclined sheet below the NW sector of the caldera. Our results highlight the primary role of the deeper reservoir which accumulates most of the magma before eruptions. Both eruptions were characterized by rapid magma transfer from the deeper to the shallower reservoir. This is similar to what is observed at the nearby Wolf volcano, but unlike nearby Sierra Negra, where a shallower reservoir accumulates higher volumes of magma before eruptions. These differences in the pre‐eruptive role of the deeper and shallower reservoirs might be related to the different evolutionary stages of Fernandina and Wolf with regard to the more mature Sierra Negra. Cerro Azul is one of the most active volcanoes in the western Galápagos Islands, but its unrest episodes are poorly studied. Unrest, which started in 2007, culminated in two eruptive phases from 29 May to 11 June 2008. We investigate this unrest and the associated eruptions using interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) data and geodetic modelling. To overcome the unwrapping errors affecting some of our InSAR data, we invert the wrapped phase directly by estimating the integer ambiguities simultaneously with the geophysical parameters. Our results highlight how the eruption was preceded by long-term pre-eruptive inflation (October 2007-April 2008). During the first eruptive phase, most of the magma responsible for the inflation fed the lateral propagation of a radial dike, which caused a first deflation of the magmatic reservoir. During the second eruptive phase, the further lateral propagation of the dike fed a radial eruptive fissure at the base of the edifice, causing further deflation of the magmatic reservoir. Understanding volcanic unrest is crucial to forecasting eruptions. At active mafic calderas unrest culminates in eruption more frequently than at felsic calderas. However, the mafic caldera of Alcedo Volcano (Ecuador) has experienced repeated episodes of unrest without erupting, since at least 1992, when geodetic monitoring began. Here we investigate the unrest that occurred between 2007 and 2011 using interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) data and geodetic modeling. We observe an initial asymmetric uplift of the southern caldera floor (~30 cm of vertical motion) from 2007 to 2009, followed by subsidence of the uplifted area and contemporary uplift of the northwestern caldera rim between January and June 2010. Finally, from June 2010 through March 2011, caldera uplift resumed. The first uplift episode is best explained by inflation of a sill and the activation of an inner ring fault. Successive caldera subsidence and rim uplift are compatible with the withdrawal of magma from the previously inflated sill and its northwestern migration. The resumption of uplift is consistent with the repressurization of the sill. This evolution suggests episodic magma emplacement in a shallow reservoir beneath the caldera, with aborted lateral magma migration, probably due to the discontinuous supply from depth. This short‐term deformation pattern matches well geological observations showing a longer‐term (hundreds of years at least) asymmetric uplift of the caldera floor, culminating in a weak resurgence of ~30 m. We propose that the monitored episodes of uplift represent short‐term stages of the rarely observed incremental growth of a resurgent basaltic caldera. The ultimate goal of volcanology is forecasting eruptions. This task is particularly challenging at calderas, where unrest is frequent, affects wider areas and its evidence is often masked by the activity of hydrothermal systems. A recent study has compiled a database on caldera unrest, derived from seismicity, geodetic, gravity, and geochemical monitoring data at calderas worldwide, from 1988 to 2014. Here we exploit this database, searching for the most recurring features of unrest and, in turn, its possible dynamics. In particular, we focus on (a) the duration of unrest at calderas; (b) recurring patterns in unrest; (c) unrest episodes culminating in eruptions, including time-predictability or size-predictability and a multivariate regression analysis. Our analysis indicates that preeruptive unrest is shorter than noneruptive unrest, particularly with open or semiplugged calderas, calderas with mafic or mixed composition of past eruptive products, or unrest driven by mafic magma; conversely, lack of data on preeruptive unrest driven by felsic magma and/or at felsic or plugged calderas prevents an analysis of these specific subsets. In addition, 72% of preeruptive unrest lasts <10 months and shows high seismicity and degassing. The remaining 28% (a) is essentially aseismic in calderas with open-conduit (17%), or (b) lasts between 10 and 18 months, with seismicity and degassing, constituting a longer-duration tail of the preeruptive unrest with seismicity and degassing (11%). Surface deformation is not always reliable to characterize preeruptive unrest. Understanding the relationships between sedimentation, tectonics and magmatism is crucial to defining the evolution of orogens and convergent plate boundaries. Here, we consider the lithostratigraphy, clastic provenance, syndepositional deformation and volcanism of the Almagro-El Toro basin of NW Argentina (24°30′ S, 65°50′ W), which experienced eruptive and depositional episodes between 14.3 and 6.4 Ma. Our aims were to elucidate the spatial and temporal record of the onset and style of the shortening and exhumation of the Eastern Cordillera in the frame of the Miocene evolution of the Central Andes foreland basin. The volcano-sedimentary sequence of the Almagro-El Toro basin consists of lower red floodplain sandstones and siltstones, medial non-volcanogenic conglomerates with localised volcanic centres and upper volcanogenic coarse conglomerates and breccia. Coarse, gravity flow-dominated (debris-flow and sheet-flow) alluvial fan systems developed proximal to the source area in the upper and medial sequence. Growing frontal and intrabasinal structures suggest that the Almagro-El Toro portion of the foreland basin accumulated on top of the eastward-propagating active thrust front of the Eastern Cordillera. Synorogenic deposits indicate that the shortening of the foreland deposits was occurring by 11.1 Ma, but conglomerates derived from the erosion of western sources suggest that the uplift and erosion of this portion of the Eastern Cordillera has occurred since ca.12.5 Ma. An unroofing reconstruction suggests that 6.5 km of rocks were exhumed. A tectono-sedimentary model of an episodically evolving thick-skinned foreland basin is proposed. In this frame, the NW-trending, transtensive Calama-Olacapato-El Toro ( COT) structures interacted with the orogen, influencing the deposition and deformation of synorogenic conglomerates, the location of volcanic centres and the differential tilt and exhumation of the foreland. Volcanic activity focuses along plate boundaries. However, large volcanoes are also found in intraplate settings. For these volcanoes, geodynamic processes responsible for magma generation and structural controls on magma rise and extrusion need to be evaluated. We merge original (field and remote sensing) and available (geodetic, geophysical, and petrological) data to consider the tectono-magmatic relationships of three large intraplate volcanoes in the E-Anatolian-Iranian plateau; Sar'akhor (NE Iran), Damavand (Central Alborz) and Ararat (E Anatolia). In NE Iran, a Miocene-Pliocene NW-trending compression activated E-W dextral faults to the NW of Sar'akhor and N-S sinistral faults to the SE, creating an extruding wedge to the west of this volcano. Since Quaternary, NE-trending compression inverted fault movement, hindering further block extrusion and volcanism terminated. The adakitic composition of the Sar'akhor rocks suggests post-collisional melting of oceanic slab and/or mafic lower crust, possibly triggered by an asthenospheric rise after slab break-off or intramantle delamination. For the active Damavand and Ararat volcanoes, available data suggest magma generation due to rising hot asthenosphere, following lithospheric delamination or slab break-off in a transtensional environment. The features common to Sar'akhor, Damavand and Ararat allow proposing a model, where transtension focuses the rise of magma in intraplate settings overlying hot asthenosphere produced by delamination or slab break-off. Volcanological and structural field data are used to define the tectonic control on the N-S volcanic arc of NE Honshu (Japan) since late Miocene. During late Miocene-Pliocene, bimodal products were mainly erupted from along-arc and NE-SW-aligned and elongated calderas. The deformation pattern mostly consisted of N-S dextral faults and subordinate NE-SW extensional structures produced by NE-SW compression. This pattern, because of the indentation of the Kuril sliver, is similar to that of oblique convergence settings. Magma rose and extruded along NE-SW areas of localized extension created by the dextral faults. These extensional areas were uncoupled with regard to those, ∼E-W trending, inferred to have focused the rise of melts from the subducting slab in the mantle. During Quaternary, a larger amount of andesite was mainly erupted from along-arc and ∼E-W-aligned and elongated stratovolcanoes. The deformation pattern mostly consisted of N-S thrust faults and subordinate ∼E-W extensional structures, produced by ∼E-W compression, resulting from orthogonal convergence due to the variation in the absolute motion of the Pacific Plate. The ∼E-W extensional structures are the shallowest expression of ∼E-W-trending hot mantle fingers, suggesting mantle-crust coupling for the rise of magma. Such a coupling ensures (1) higher extrusion and (2) mixing between a deeper mafic and a shallower felsic magma, generating the andesites. The significantly larger volumes (Ma−1 200 km−1 of length of the arc) of magma erupted during Quaternary show that pure convergence conditions do not necessarily hinder the rise and extrusion of magma. The Tyrrhenian margin of central Italy has undergone Plio-Quaternary extension, developing NW-SE normal faults and NE-SW faults. The NE-SW faults decrease in frequency toward NE with the stretching factor β, becoming negligible for β < 1.3. Plio-Quaternary volcanoes, aligned NW-SE, formed at the intersection among NE-SW and NW-SE faults; fissure eruptions are mostly controlled by NE-SW faults. Structural field data show normal motions for 76% of NW-SE Quaternary faults and transtensive for 73% of NE-SW Quaternary faults. Analogue experiments simulating the NE-SW Tyrrhenian extension show that transverse transtensive faults form with differential extension Δβ > 0.21. These data suggest that the NE-SW transtensive structures are transfer faults of the NW-SE normal faults due to relevant differential extension (Δβ > 0.21) within a stretched crust (β > 1.3). The minor dip-slip and strike-slip components of the NE-SW and NW-SE faults, respectively, possibly result from the NW-SE extension due to the southeastward slab retreat beneath the Calabrian arc. The NE-SW and NW-SE extensions in the central southern Tyrrhenian Sea account for the composite kinematics of the NE-SW structures, which, in turn, exert a twofold role in controlling volcanism. Where their dip-slip component forms basins, the associated decompression induces magma accumulation (developing central volcanoes) at the intersection among NW-SE and NE-SW systems. Where transfer faults are mainly strike slip, their inferred subvertical attitude enhances their permeability to magma, accounting for the observed NE-SW fissure eruptions. Regional extension, forming NW-SE faults, enhances the overall generation and rise of magma along the margin, but NE-SW structures focus magma rise and emplacement at shallower levels.
