Soil moisture is an essential climate variable of the Earth system. Understanding its spatiotemporal dynamics is essential for predicting weather patterns and climate variability, monitoring and mitigating the effects and occurrence of droughts and floods, improving irrigation in agricultural areas, and sustainably managing water resources. Here we review in depth how soils can remember information on soil moisture anomalies over time, as embedded in the concept of soil moisture memory (SMM). We explain the mechanisms underlying SMM and explore its external and internal drivers; we also discuss the impacts of SMM on different land surface processes, focusing on soil‐plant‐atmosphere coupling. We explore the spatiotemporal variability, seasonality, locality, and depth‐dependence of SMM and provide insights into both improving its characterization in land surface models and using satellite observations to quantify it. Finally, we offer guidance for further research on SMM. Plain Language Summary: Our review paper takes an in‐depth look at soil moisture memory, which is how soil records its moisture history over time and space. Analogous to human psychology, which seeks to understand how a person's/society's memory influences his/her present and future behavior, understanding soil moisture memory encourages consideration of how such memory determines present state and might determine future behavior of soils exposed to environmental disturbances. Soil moisture memory can be affected by a variety of factors, both external (e.g., weather extremes) and internal (soil's unique properties). It affects everything from the air to the way our landscapes respond to disasters like droughts, wildfires, and floods. We also studied how this phenomenon affects the balance of water and energy in our environment, the health of our plants, and even how it communicates with the atmosphere. We show how it can change depending on where you are on the planet, the time of year, and how deep you dig into the soil. We offer scientists insights into how weather and land surface models can become more accurate by accounting for soil moisture memory. Its understanding not only helps us predict and manage our environment, but also provides opportunities for exciting scientific discoveries. The functions of soils are intimately linked to their three‐dimensional pore space and the associated biogeochemical interfaces, mirrored in the complex structure that developed during pedogenesis. Under stress overload, soil disintegrates into smaller compound structures, conventionally named aggregates. Microaggregates (<250 µm) are recognized as the most stable soil structural units. They are built of mineral, organic, and biotic materials, provide habitats for a vast diversity of microorganisms, and are closely involved in the cycling of matter and energy. However, exploring the architecture of soil microaggregates and their linkage to soil functions remains a challenging but demanding scientific endeavor. With the advent of complementary spectromicroscopic and tomographic techniques, we can now assess and visualize the size, composition, and porosity of microaggregates and the spatial arrangement of their interior building units. Their combinations with advanced experimental pedology, multi‐isotope labeling experiments, and computational approaches pave the way to investigate microaggregate turnover and stability, explore their role in element cycling, and unravel the intricate linkage between structure and function. However, spectromicroscopic techniques operate at different scales and resolutions, and have specific requirements for sample preparation and microaggregate isolation; hence, special attention must be paid to both the separation of microaggregates in a reproducible manner and the synopsis of the geography of information that originates from the diverse complementary instrumental techniques. The latter calls for further development of strategies for synlocation and synscaling beyond the present state of correlative analysis. Here, we present examples of recent scientific progress and review both options and challenges of the joint application of cutting‐edge techniques to achieve a sophisticated picture of the properties and functions of soil microaggregates. Background: Microaggregates are suspected to protect soil organic carbon (SOC) from microbial decay, but its residence time is not well understood. Aims: We aimed at unraveling the relevance of microaggregates for C storage and testing the hypothesis that C in the interior of aggregates is older, compared to the exterior. Methods: We sampled soil under C3 vegetation and at a site where cropping shifted to C4 vegetation 36 years ago. We isolated free and macroaggregate‐occluded size fractions (250–53 µm) by wet sieving and ultrasound, manually isolated aggregates therefrom, and analyzed whether vegetation‐related differences in δ13C could be traced at the interior and exterior of microaggregate cross‐sections using elemental and laser ablation‐isotope ratio mass spectrometry. Results: Size fraction weights comprised <5% of microaggregates. Based on a source partitioning approach including C3‐ and C4‐derived C, we found mean residence times of SOC in occluded and free microaggregates of 62 and 105 years, respectively. Thus, C storage was longer than that in size fractions (35 years) and bulk soil (58 years). The small‐scale variability of δ13C within aggregate cross‐sections was considerable, both in C3 and C4 soil, yet without significant (p = 0.46) differences between interior and exterior locations. Conclusions: We conclude that microaggregates do not persist in an intact form in such a long‐term that systematic differences in δ13C patterns between exterior and interior parts can develop. Soils in hyper‐arid climates, such as the Chilean Atacama Desert, show indications of past and present forms of life despite extreme water limitations. We hypothesize that fog plays a key role in sustaining life. In particular, we assume that fog water is incorporated into soil nutrient cycles, with the inland limit of fog penetration corresponding to the threshold for biological cycling of soil phosphorus (P). We collected topsoil samples (0–10 cm) from each of 54 subsites, including sites in direct adjacency (<10 cm) and in 1 m distance to plants, along an aridity gradient across the Coastal Cordillera. Satellite‐based fog detection revealed that Pacific fog penetrates up to 10 km inland, while inland sites at 10–23 km from the coast rely solely on sporadic rainfall for water supply. To assess biological P cycling we performed sequential P fractionation and determined oxygen isotope of HCl‐extractable inorganic Pδ18OHCl−Pi$$ \mathrm{P}\ \left({\updelta}^{18}{\mathrm{O}}_{\mathrm{HCl}-{\mathrm{P}}_{\mathrm{i}}}\right) $$. Total P (Pt) concentration exponentially increased from 336 mg kg−1 to a maximum of 1021 mg kg−1 in inland areas ≥10 km. With increasing distance from the coast, soil δ18OHCl−Pi$$ {\updelta}^{18}{\mathrm{O}}_{\mathrm{HCl}-{\mathrm{P}}_{\mathrm{i}}} $$ values declined exponentially from 16.6‰ to a constant 9.9‰ for locations ≥10 km inland. Biological cycling of HCl‐Pi near the coast reached a maximum of 76%–100%, which could only be explained by the fact that fog water predominately drives biological P cycling. In inland regions, with minimal rainfall (<5 mm) as single water source, only 24 ± 14% of HCl‐Pi was biologically cycled. We conclude that biological P cycling in the hyper‐arid Atacama Desert is not exclusively but mainly mediated by fog, which thus controls apatite dissolution rates and related occurrence and spread of microbial life in this extreme environment. Phosphorus (P) is a key limiting nutrient in tropical and subtropical soils but with unknown responses to climate change. We hypothesized that storage and distribution of P pools differ between reference soil groups, but P availability increases with an increase in precipitation in native sub‐Saharan Africa, an underrepresented region in the global P database. To test these hypotheses, we sampled topsoils (0–10 cm; Arenosols, Lixisols, Acrisols) of uncultivated Savannah woodlands along climate gradients stretching from Mozambique to Zambia. Mean annual precipitation (MAP) ranged from 365 to 1227 mm. We extracted P fractions using Hedley's sequential fractionation, yielding resin‐exchangeable P, P in 0.5 M NaHCO3, 0.1 M NaOH, 1 M HCl and aqua regia. Extracts were analysed for total P using inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectroscopy and inorganic P using the colorimetric molybdenum blue method. We found that total P contents were highest in Acrisols (235 ± 76 mg kg−1), followed by Lixisols (214 ± 45 mg kg−1) and Arenosols (133 ± 74 mg kg−1). Beside P storage, also P distribution differed between soils. Mean annual temperature (MAT) did not reveal significant correlations with P fractions. However, with increasing MAP, concentrations of almost all P pools increased; available Pi (Resin‐P) increased significantly in Arenosols while potentially bioavailable P (NaHCO3‐Po) increased in all soils, with MAP explaining 43% of data variability in Arenosols, 74% in Lixisols and 85% in Acrisols. Hence, P availability increased with an increase in MAP to different degrees, that is, climatic effects on P dynamics were soil‐group‐specific. Lake sediments are unique archives of human environment interactions. Lake Prespa is one of the oldest lakes in Europe, lying in the southwestern Balkans and thus on a possible dispersal route of anatomically modern humans from Africa. In this study, we investigated the effects of climate, vegetation and human activity on fire over the last 92,000 years in this region. Sediment samples were taken from Lake Prespa, and nearby Lake Ohrid for comparison of the regional relevance, and analyzed for benzene polycarboxylic acids as markers for burned organic carbon residues (black carbon, BC). Peaking contents of BC (up to 1 g BC kg−1 sediment) coincided with warm and humid phases, when forests expanded at marine isotope stages (MIS) 5 and 1. During the colder and more arid climates of MIS 4 and 2, BC contents were lowered by a factor of 10, with a distinct minimum during the Last Glacial Maximum (0.07 g BC kg−1). The ratio of pentacarboxylic acid to mellitic acid (B5CA/B6CA) declined from 1.2 at MIS 5 to values of 0.3 at MIS 2, confirming a change in fire regime. Overall, BC contents peaked at cycles of solar radiation, vegetation composition and fuel availability, and thus correspond to the BC signal of other environmental archives. However, in the Late Holocene and as a result of human sedentary settlement, BC production increased, independent of decreasing insolation forcing. Deep‐ploughing far beyond the common depth of 30 cm was used more than 50 years ago in Northern Germany with the aim to break root‐restricting layers and thereby improve access to subsoil water and nutrient resources. We hypothesized that effects of this earlier intervention on soil properties and yields prevailed after 50 years. Hence, we sampled two sandy soils and one silty soil (Cambisols and a Luvisol) of which half of the field had been deep‐ploughed 50 years ago (soils then re‐classified as Treposols). The adjacent other half was not deep‐ploughed and thus served as the control. At all the three sites, both deep‐ploughed and control parts were then conventionally managed over the last 50 years. We assessed yields during the dry year 2019 and additionally in 2020, and rooting intensity at the year of sampling (2019), as well as changes in soil structure, carbon and nutrient stocks in that year. We found that deep‐ploughing improved yields in the dry spell of 2019 at the sandy sites, which was supported by a more general pattern of higher NDVI indices in deep‐ploughed parts for the period from 2016 to 2021 across varying weather conditions. Subsoil stocks of soil organic carbon and total plant‐available phosphorus were enhanced by 21%–199% in the different sites. Root biomass in the subsoil was reduced due to deep‐ploughing at the silty site and was increased or unaffected at the sandy sites. Overall, the effects of deep‐ploughing were site‐specific, with reduced bulk density in the buried topsoil stripes in the subsoil of the sandy sites, but with elevated subsoil density in the silty site. The use of urea as nitrogen (N) fertilizer in agriculture needs to consider environmental, economic and resource conservation aspects because of low N‐use efficiency (NUE). Polymer‐coated urea (PCU) offers an effective way to improve the NUE of urea and to reduce its environmental trade‐offs. However, we lack information on the impact of climate and soil properties on N release from PCU. Therefore, this study was performed to quantify the effects of soil texture, moisture and temperature on the release kinetics of N from PCU. We designed a test system for soil incubation experiments and investigated three fertilizers with different release patterns, five topsoils, three moisture levels and two temperatures over 48 days. We analysed the concentrations of inorganic N (NH4+−N and NO3−−N) in the soil and estimated N release rates using the unified Richards model. Soil texture did not change the N release patterns, but release rates varied significantly among the investigated soils. Changes in soil moisture for a given soil had no effect on N release from PCU and urea when fertilizers were incorporated into the soil at conditions supportive of crop growth. Lowering soil temperatures, however, decreased N release rates from PCU by 16%–49% but only in silt loam and not in sandy loam. We conclude that PCU improves the N residence time in soil, but predictions on N release from PCU must be adapted to the prevailing environmental conditions and cannot be generalized across differently textured soils. Soil water status, which refers to the wetness or dryness of soils, is crucial for the productivity of agroecosystems, as it determines nutrient cycling and uptake physically via transport, biologically via the moisture‐dependent activity of soil flora, fauna, and plants, and chemically via specific hydrolyses and redox reactions. Here, we focus on the dynamics of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and sulfur (S) and review how soil water is coupled to the cycling of these elements and related stoichiometric controls across different scales within agroecosystems. These scales span processes at the molecular level, where nutrients and water are consumed, to processes in the soil pore system, within a soil profile and across the landscape. We highlight that with increasing mobility of the nutrients in water, water‐based nutrient flux may alleviate or even exacerbate imbalances in nutrient supply within soils, for example, by transport of mobile nutrients towards previously depleted microsites (alleviating imbalances), or by selective loss of mobile nutrients from microsites (increasing imbalances). These imbalances can be modulated by biological activity, especially by fungal hyphae and roots, which contribute to nutrient redistribution within soils, and which are themselves dependent on specific, optimal water availability. At larger scales, such small‐scale effects converge with nutrient inputs from atmospheric (wet deposition) or nonlocal sources and with nutrient losses from the soil system towards aquifers. Hence, water acts as a major control in nutrient cycling across scales in agroecosystems and may either exacerbate or remove spatial disparities in the availability of the individual nutrients (N, P, S) required for biological activity. The oxygen isotopic composition of phosphate (δ18OP) in soils and surface water bodies has been used to trace terrestrial P inputs into aquatic ecosystems. However, enhanced biological activity in vegetated riparian buffer strips (VBSs) may lead to an alteration of δ18OP values. The objective of this study was to assess whether enhanced biological cycling of P in VBS soils can be identified using δ18OP values. For this purpose, we sampled temperate grassland soils at various depths along a VBS to grassland transect. Here, we combined sequential P soil extracts with an analysis of δ18OP values. Soil P pool concentrations tended to decrease significantly along the transect from the VBS to the grassland soils; the strength of this relationship varied with P extract, sample depth, and inorganic or organic bonding form. For the δ18OP values of the 1 M HCl‐extractable P we observed a significant negative trend along the VBS to grassland transect, indicating a tendency for accelerated rates of biological cycling of P within the VBS soil profile compared with the upslope soils. We conclude that oxygen isotope‐based assessments of P source contributions to freshwater bodies should consider the enhanced biological turnover of P in VBS soils. Nitrogen (N) cycling in rangeland soils could potentially be controlled by water supply, stocking rates, or a range of other variables, such as ecosystem N stocks. To gauge the relative importance and elucidate possible interactions among these factors, we measured many abiotic variables to identify first‐order controls of δ15N for Patagonia's rangeland soils under contrasting historical grazing intensities. The results showed that δ15N values declined as water availability increased. The effects of precipitation and stocking rate on soil δ15N values were additive, and the effect of precipitation far outweighed the effects of grazing pressure. The soil N stock was a weak predictive variable for modeling variation in δ15N of the soil. Earlier assumptions about an inflection point for N cycling and δ15N values related to aridity were not confirmed. We conclude that variation in water availability drives variation in δ15N values irrespective of grazing intensity. We also conclude that meaningful interpretation of δ15N in soil will require a better mechanistic understanding of the interactions between water and N in the vadose zone than we currently possess. Nature conservation and restoration in terrestrial ecosystems is often focused on increasing the numbers of megafauna, expecting them to have positive impacts on ecological self‐regulation processes and biodiversity. In sub‐Saharan Africa, conservation efforts also aspire to protect and enhance biodiversity with particular focus on elephants. However, elephant browsing carries the risk of woody biomass losses. In this context, little is known about how increasing elephant numbers affects carbon stocks in soils, including the subsoils. We hypothesized that (1) increasing numbers of elephants reduce tree biomass, and thus the amount of C stored therein, resulting (2) in a loss of soil organic carbon (SOC). If true, a negative carbon footprint could limit the sustainability of elephant conservation from a global carbon perspective. To test these hypotheses, we selected plots of low, medium, and high elephant densities in two national parks and adjacent conservancies in the Namibian component of the Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Area (KAZA), and quantified carbon storage in both woody vegetation and soils (1 m). Analyses were supplemented by the assessment of soil carbon isotopic composition. We found that increasing elephant densities resulted in a loss of tree carbon storage by 6.4 t ha−1. However, and in contrast to our second hypothesis, SOC stocks increased by 4.7 t ha−1 with increasing elephant densities. These higher SOC stocks were mainly found in the topsoil (0–30 cm) and were largely due to the formation of SOC from woody biomass. A second carbon input source into the soils was megaherbivore dung, which contributed with 0.02–0.323 t C ha−1 year−1 to ecosystem carbon storage in the low and high elephant density plots, respectively. Consequently, increasing elephant density does not necessarily lead to a negative C footprint, as soil carbon sequestration and transient C storage in dung almost compensate for losses in tree biomass. Summary: Understanding P uptake in soil–plant systems requires suitable P tracers. The stable oxygen isotope ratio in phosphate (expressed as δ18OP) is an alternative to radioactive labelling, but the degree to which plants preserve the δ18OP value of the P source is unclear. We hypothesised that the source signal will be preserved in roots rather than shoots.In soil and hydroponic experiments with spring wheat (Triticum aestivum), we replaced irrigation water by 18O‐labelled water for up to 10 d. We extracted plant inorganic phosphates with trichloroacetic acid (TCA), assessed temporal dynamics of δ18OTCA‐P values after changing to 18O‐labelled water and combined the results with a mathematical model.Within 1 wk, full equilibration of δ18OTCA‐P values with the isotope value of the water in the growth medium occurred in shoots but not in roots. Model results further indicated that root δ18OTCA‐P values were affected by back transport of phosphate from shoots to roots, with a greater contribution of source P at higher temperatures when back transport was reduced.Root δ18OTCA‐P partially preserved the source signal, providing an indicator of P uptake sources. Background and aims: Phosphorus (P) is an essential element for crop growth. However, while links of P turnover in soils to carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) availability have been described, it remains to be clarified how combinations of fertilizer C and N additions affect stocks and cycling of distinct P fractions at different soil depths. The objectives of our study were (1) to assess how soil total P stocks are affected by organic amendments and N fertilization, (2) to evaluate how different soil P fractions respond to N fertilization, and (3) to verify whether N fertilization increases soil biological P cycling. Methods: We collected soil samples from a long‐term field experiment established in 1984 in Rauischholzhausen, Germany. The soil is a Haplic Luvisol and received either no organic fertilizer (NOF), farmyard manure (FYM) or a combination of organic and mineral N fertilizer (OMF). Each treatment additionally received three levels of mineral N: 0 kg ha−1 y−1 (N0), 100 kg ha−1 y−1 (N100), and 200 kg ha−1 y−1 (N200). The organic fertilizers were applied by a manure spreader and the N fertilizer (calcium ammonium nitrate) was applied in spring as top dressing by a plot fertilizer machine. We estimated stocks of P in fractions isolated by sequential P fractionation, and assessed the oxygen isotopic composition of 1 M HCl‐extractable phosphate (δ18OP). Results: We found that increased organic matter (OM) addition and mineral N inputs caused significant decreases in the stocks of resin‐ and NaHCO3‐extractable P in the topsoil (0–30 cm). Mineral N fertilization alone resulted in significant increases in stocks of resin‐, NaHCO3‐, and NaOH‐extractable P in the upper subsoil (30–50 cm). These changes occurred for both inorganic and organic P. The subsoil δ18OP values were closer to expected equilibrium values in soil fertilized with mineral N, indicative of more intensive biological P cycling than in the treatments without mineral N inputs. Conclusions: These findings suggest that long‐term OM and mineral N fertilization promotes topsoil P losses from labile fractions by crop uptake with an enrichment of these P forms in the subsoil, and an overall increase in biological P cycling in both top‐ and subsoil horizons upon N fertilization. Background: In search for more sustainable crop production, the subsoil has recently come into focus as considerable reservoir of nutrients and water. Aims: Dimensions of subsoil phosphorus (P) reserves are yet largely unknown but crucial for identifying regions suitable to include subsoil into sustainable management strategies. Methods: We analyzed stocks of total and plant‐available (calcium acetate lactate‐extractable) P in 96 representative soil profiles of German arable land down to 1 m depth. Results: We found that the German arable soils stored, on average, 8 t ha−1 of total P, of which nearly 500 kg ha−1 were readily plant‐available. Notably, one third of plant‐available P was located below the plow layer and one fifth even at depths below 0.5 m. The depth gradients of plant‐available P stocks were affected more by major reference soil group than by texture. Generally, Chernozem but also Anthrosol, Gleysol and Fluvisol exhibited the largest P stocks in German cropland. The contribution of plant‐available P to total P stocks was larger in sandy and extremely acidic (pH < 4.5) soils compared with more fine‐grained and slightly acidic to alkaline soils, possibly because fertilization compensated for overall lower total P stocks at these sites. Generally, the more P was stored in topsoils, the more P was stored also in subsoils. Conclusions: A hypothetical crop utilization of 10% from plant‐available P stocks and 0.1% from total P stocks from shallow subsoil could compensate for P fertilization by ca. 8 kg ha−1, but the rate of plant‐available P replenishment in subsoil likely remains the crucial factor for the role of subsoil P stocks in crop nutrition. Liming is widely used to alleviate soil acidity in western and central Europe, but its role in the cycling of magnesium (Mg) in arable soil–plant systems is still ambiguous. Here, we systematically analysed Mg concentrations and the natural Mg stable isotope compositions (δ26Mg) of two Mg pools in soil profiles and a major crop (winter rye) in a long‐term German agricultural experimental field that has been managed with and without liming since 1923. The results showed that the δ26Mg signatures of the bulk soil Mg pool in the studied Albic Luvisol displayed limited variation with depth and between the liming treatments. In contrast, the exchangeable soil Mg pool exhibited an increase in δ26Mg values with depth down to 50 cm, which was more pronounced in the limed plots. We attributed this enrichment of light Mg isotopes in upper layers to the Mg addition from "Dolokorn 90" lime, as well as to the removal of heavy Mg isotopes by plant uptake. The subsequent use of a simple isotope‐mixing model suggested that only 25% of the remaining Mg in the soil exchangeable pool stemmed from the last liming practice. The other parts of the exchangeable soil Mg pool had either interacted with the bulk soil matrix or had been utilized by the plants. Almost 100 years of liming enhanced Mg uptake by the vegetation, probably via elevated Mg contents in the grain, and reflected by the stronger depletion of heavy Mg isotopes in the soil exchangeable Mg pool relative to non‐limed plots. Whole winter rye plants were enriched in heavy Mg isotopes but they displayed similar Mg isotope compositions among plant organs in all plots, indicating identical Mg uptake and translocation strategies in the different trials. Tracing the stable isotope compositions of soil and plant Mg thus opens novel opportunities to evaluate soil management impacts on the cycling and fate of this essential nutrient in agricultural systems. Sustainable arable cropping relies on repeated liming. Yet, the associated increase in soil pH can reduce the availability of iron (Fe) to plants. We hypothesized that repeated liming, but not pedogenic processes such as lessivage (i.e., translocation of clay particles), alters the Fe cycle in Luvisol soil, thereby affecting Fe isotope composition in soils and crops. Hence, we analysed Fe concentrations and isotope compositions in soil profiles and winter rye from the long‐term agricultural experimental site in Berlin‐Dahlem, Germany, where a controlled liming trial with three field replicates per treatment has been conducted on Albic Luvisols since 1923. Heterogeneity in subsoil was observed at this site for Fe concentration but not for Fe isotope composition. Lessivage had not affected Fe isotope composition in the soil profiles. The results also showed that almost 100 years of liming lowered the concentration of the HCl‐extractable Fe that was potentially available for plant uptake in the surface soil (0–15 cm) from 1.03 (standard error (SE) 0.03) to 0.94 (SE 0.01) g kg−1. This HCl‐extractable Fe pool contained isotopically lighter Fe (δ56Fe = −0.05 to −0.29‰) than the bulk soil (δ56Fe = −0.08 to 0.08‰). However, its Fe isotope composition was not altered by the long‐term lime application. Liming resulted in relatively lower Fe concentrations in the roots of winter rye. In addition, liming led to a heavier Fe isotope composition of the whole plants compared with those grown in the non‐limed plots (δ56FeWholePlant_ + Lime = −0.12‰, SE 0.03 vs. δ56FeWholePlant_‐Lime = −0.21‰, SE 0.01). This suggests that the elevated soil pH (increased by one unit due to liming) promoted the Fe uptake strategy through complexation of Fe(III) from the rhizosphere, which favoured heavier Fe isotopes. Overall, the present study showed that liming and a related increase in pH did not affect the Fe isotope compositions of the soil, but may influence the Fe isotope composition of plants grown in the soil if they alter their Fe uptake strategy upon the change of Fe availability. Electromagnetic induction (EMI) data are often used to investigate spatial and temporal patterns of soil texture, soil water content and soil salinity. We hypothesized that the EMI methodology might thus also offer potential to detect agricultural legacy effects originating from fertilizer application and irrigation of different fields. Therefore, we performed EMI measurements on two long‐term field experiments (LTFE) at Thyrow near Berlin (Germany) that differed in agricultural management with regard to long‐term irrigation in combination with mineral (NPK and lime) and organic amendments (straw and farmyard manure). Two different rigid‐boom multi‐coil EMI instruments were used to measure simultaneously the apparent electrical conductivity (ECa) over nine different depth ranges to study the entire soil profile from topsoil to deep subsoil. Additionally, soil samples were taken from the different treatments to ground‐truth the measurements and disentangle the nutrient application or irrigation effects from natural soil heterogeneity. The soil samples indicated a rather homogenous soil and the correlation between soil parameters or states were not significant. However, the treatments showed significant differences in measured ECa values. In general, ECa values were largest on regularly irrigated as well as on mineral and organic fertilized plots, with regular irrigation exhibiting the largest impact on EMI records even though the last application was months before the EMI measurement. Overall, this study reveals that EMI data can support the classical in situ assessment of agricultural management effects within LTFE, while offering new potentials in detecting and understanding legacy effects of agricultural management on spatial soil properties at farm level. Soil carbon transformation and sequestration have received significant interest in recent years due to a growing need for quantitating its role in mitigating climate change. Even though our understanding of the nature of soil organic matter has recently been substantially revised, fundamental uncertainty remains about the quantitative importance of microbial necromass as part of persistent organic matter. Addressing this uncertainty has been hampered by the absence of quantitative assessments whether microbial matter makes up the majority of the persistent carbon in soil. Direct quantitation of microbial necromass in soil is very challenging because of an overlapping molecular signature with nonmicrobial organic carbon. Here, we use a comprehensive analysis of existing biomarker amino sugar data published between 1996 and 2018, combined with novel appropriation using an ecological systems approach, elemental carbon–nitrogen stoichiometry, and biomarker scaling, to demonstrate a suit of strategies for quantitating the contribution of microbe‐derived carbon to the topsoil organic carbon reservoir in global temperate agricultural, grassland, and forest ecosystems. We show that microbial necromass can make up more than half of soil organic carbon. Hence, we suggest that next‐generation field management requires promoting microbial biomass formation and necromass preservation to maintain healthy soils, ecosystems, and climate. Abstract: All soils harbor microaggregates, i.e., compound soil structures smaller than 250 µm. These microaggregates are composed of diverse mineral, organic and biotic materials that are bound together during pedogenesis by various physical, chemical and biological processes. Consequently, microaggregates can withstand strong mechanical and physicochemical stresses and survive slaking in water, allowing them to persist in soils for several decades. Together with the physiochemical heterogeneity of their surfaces, the three‐dimensional structure of microaggregates provides a large variety of ecological niches that contribute to the vast biological diversity found in soils. As reported for larger aggregate units, microaggregates are composed of smaller building units that become more complex with increasing size. In this context, organo‐mineral associations can be considered structural units of soil aggregates and as nanoparticulate fractions of the microaggregates themselves. The mineral phases considered to be the most important as microaggregate forming materials are the clay minerals and Fe‐ and Al‐(hydr)oxides. Within microaggregates, minerals are bound together primarily by physicochemical and chemical interactions involving cementing and gluing agents. The former comprise, among others, carbonates and the short‐range ordered phases of Fe, Mn, and Al. The latter comprise organic materials of diverse origin and probably involve macromolecules and macromolecular mixtures. Work on microaggregate structure and development has largely focused on organic matter stability and turnover. However, little is known concerning the role microaggregates play in the fate of elements like Si, Fe, Al, P, and S. More recently, the role of microaggregates in the formation of microhabitats and the biogeography and diversity of microbial communities has been investigated. Little is known regarding how microaggregates and their properties change in time, which strongly limits our understanding of micro‐scale soil structure dynamics. Similarly, only limited information is available on the mechanical stability of microaggregates, while essentially nothing is known about the flow and transport of fluids and solutes within the micro‐ and nanoporous microaggregate systems. Any quantitative approaches being developed for the modeling of formation, structure and properties of microaggregates are, therefore, in their infancy. We respond to the growing awareness of the importance of microaggregates for the structure, properties and functions of soils by reviewing what is currently known about the formation, composition and turnover of microaggregates. We aim to provide a better understanding of their role in soil function, and to present the major unknowns in current microaggregate research. We propose a harmonized concept for aggregates in soils that explicitly considers the structure and build‐up of microaggregates and the role of organo‐mineral associations. We call for experiments, studies and modeling endeavors that will link information on aggregate forming materials with their functional properties across a range of scales in order to better understand microaggregate formation and turnover. Finally, we hope to inspire a novel cohort of soil scientists that they might focus their research on improving our understanding of the role of microaggregates within the system of aggregates and so help to develop a unified and quantitative concept of aggregation processes in soils. Historically, large areas of forest in Europe were managed as coppice woodland to produce wood-based fuel for the smelting industry. We hypothesized that this practice produced a legacy effect on current forest ecosystem properties. Specifically, we hypothesized that the historical form of coppicing may have produced a legacy of elevated stocks of soil organic carbon ( SOC), nutrients and black carbon ( BC) in soil as fire was routinely used in coppiced woodland to clear land. We further hypothesized that these changes in soil properties would result in increased biodiversity. To test these hypotheses, we sampled the surface soil (0-5, 5-10 and 10-20 cm) from a chronosequence of forest sites found in the Siegerland (Germany) that had been coppiced and burned 1, 2, 3.5, 6, 8, 11 and 17 years before present. Mature beech and spruce forests (i.e., >60 years) were also sampled as reference sites: to provide a hint of what might occur in the absence of human intervention. We measured stocks of SOC, BC, NO3-N, P, K, Mg, as well as cation exchange and water-holding capacity, and we mapped plant composition to calculate species richness and evenness. The results showed that coppicing in combination with burning soil and litter improved soil nutrient availability, enhanced biodiversity and increased SOC stocks. The SOC stocks and biodiversity were increased by a factor of three relative to those in the mature beech and spruce forests. This study shows that traditional coppicing practice may facilitate net C accrual rates of 20 t ha−1 yr−1 and maintain high biodiversity, indicating that aspects of traditional practice could be applied in current forest management to foster biodiversity and to mitigate climate change. The climatic regime influences the turnover of P in soils, resulting in shifts in P fractions of different bonding forms. Here, we aimed at (i) identifying possible changes in P fractions as related to mean annual temperature (MAT) and mean annual precipitation (MAP), as well as (ii) elucidating how these patterns change under long-term agriculture. We analyzed different P fractions after sequential extraction according to the Hedley procedure from the top 10 cm of 18 native grassland sites and adjacent long-term agricultural fields along a temperature and precipitation transect from central Saskatoon to south Texas. The analyses were performed on bulk soils and clay fractions. The results showed that total P (Ptot) concentrations decreased with increasing MAT but were not clearly related to MAP. The contributions of total inorganic P (Pitot) and total organic P (Potot) to Ptot did neither change with MAT nor with MAP. The proportions of individual soil fractions were shifted from the labile and easily extractable P bonding forms to the more stable, residual P fractions with increasing annual temperature. Arable cropping induced loss of organic P (Po). The relationships to the climatic factors were sustained for the arable soil, but better reflected in the clay fractions than in the bulk soil. We conclude that there is a gross pattern of soil P distribution related to the climate, likely reflecting the increased biological processing as well as and progressing weathering and neoformation of secondary mineral phases as annual temperatures rise. Pyrophosphatases (EC 3.6.1.1) are ubiquitous enzymes that catalyse the hydrolysis of pyrophosphate, a byproduct of many biochemical reactions. The hydrolysis leads to an oxygen isotope exchange between the newly formed phosphate molecules and water. Here, we applied Raman spectroscopy to monitor the oxygen isotope exchange reaction in presence of pyrophosphatase from baker's yeast. For this purpose, enzymatic assays consisting of 0.8M 18O-enriched phosphate were prepared under pH-buffered conditions. Upon addition of pyrophosphatase, the Raman spectrum of the solution immediately started to shift to higher wavenumbers, indicating the progressive substitution of 18O in phosphate by 16O from water. The analytical resultswere quantified by fitting a Voigt function to themeasured Raman spectra that allowed to determine the relative contribution of each phosphate isotopologue in solution over time. Based on the relative contribution of the different phosphate species, the apparent overall oxygen exchange rate could be calculated assuming a first-order kinetic. The progressive formation and disappearance of the different phosphate isotopologues were thenmodelled by applying a consecutive reaction schemewith first-order steps. The results of our experiments show that Raman spectroscopy can be used to study the kinetics of enzymecatalysed oxygen isotope exchange in the phosphate-water system. Elemental contents in catchment headwaters are indicative of the load of nutrients and minerals cycled or released from ecosystems, yet little is known about natural colloids (1-1000 nm) and especially natural nanoparticles (NNP, 1-100 nm) as nutrient carriers in forested headwater streams. We hypothesize that the majority of P is bound to NNP in forest streams but that their size and composition varies for different forested headwater systems. Four forested sites in Germany and one in Norway, which differ in total P content, were sampled for stream water and analyzed for colloids. The samples were fractionated using field flow fractionation coupled to inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry and an organic C detector. The results showed that NNP and colloids from all sites could be separated into three distinct fractions (approximately 1-20 nm, >20-60 nm, and >60 nm). The elemental concentrations of P, organic C, Al, Si, Fe, and Mn in the fractions differed among the five sites. However, cluster analysis showed that each fraction had unique elemental signatures with different preferential P binding partners. Phosphorus was preferentially associated with Fe in the smallest size fraction, with an increasing contribution of organic-C-associated P as the fraction size increased. The largest fraction was dominated by clay minerals. Also, the data indicated that the relative contribution of the NNP and colloidal fractions for ecosystem nutrient supply rises as total P concentrations decline. Understanding natural controls on N and C biogeochemical cycles is important to estimate human impacts on these cycles. This study examined the spatiotemporal relationships between time series of weekly monitored stream and groundwater N and C (assessed by NO3- and dissolved organic C [DOC]) in the forested Wüstebach catchment (Germany). In addition to traditional correlation analysis, we applied wavelet transform coherence (WTC) analysis to study variations in the correlation and lag time between the N and C time series for different time scales. Median transit times were used to connect hydrologic and water chemistry data. We defined three stream-water groups: (i) subsurface runoff dominated locations with strong seasonal fluctuations in concentrations, short transit times, and strong negative C/N correlations with short time lags, (ii) groundwater dominated locations, with weaker seasonal fluctuations, longer transit times, and weaker C/N correlations with lags of several months, and (iii) intermediate locations, with moderate seasonal fluctuations, moderate transit times, and strong C/N correlations with short time lags. Water transit times could be identified as key drivers for the C/N relationship and we conclude that C and N transport in stream water can be explained by mixing of groundwater and subsurface runoff. Complemented by transit times and the hydrochemical time series, WTC analysis allowed us to discriminate between different water sources (groundwater vs. subsurface runoff). In conclusion, we found that in time series studies of hydrochemical data, e.g., DOC and NO3-, WTC analysis can be a viable tool to identify spatiotemporally dependent relationships in catchments. Understanding and quantification of phosphorus (P) fluxes are key requirements for predictions of future forest ecosystems changes as well as for transferring lessons learned from natural ecosystems to croplands and plantations. This review summarizes and evaluates the recent knowledge on mechanisms, magnitude, and relevance by which dissolved and colloidal inorganic and organic P forms can be translocated within or exported from forest ecosystems. Attention is paid to hydrological pathways of P losses at the soil profile and landscape scales, and the subsequent influence of P on aquatic ecosystems. New (unpublished) data from the German Priority Program 1685 ' Ecosystem Nutrition: Forest Strategies for limited Phosphorus Resources' were added to provide up-to-date flux-based information. Nitrogen (N) additions increase the release of water-transportable P forms. Most P found in percolates and pore waters belongs to the so-called dissolved organic P (DOP) fractions, rich in orthophosphate-monoesters and also containing some orthophosphate-diesters. Total solution P concentrations range from ca. 1 to 400 µg P L−1, with large variations among forest stands. Recent sophisticated analyses revealed that large portions of the DOP in forest stream water can comprise natural nanoparticles and fine colloids which under extreme conditions may account for 40-100% of the P losses. Their translocation within preferential flow passes may be rapid, mediated by storm events. The potential total P loss through leaching into subsoils and with streams was found to be less than 50 mg P m−2 a−1, suggesting effects on ecosystems at centennial to millennium scale. All current data are based on selected snapshots only. Quantitative measurements of P fluxes in temperate forest systems are nearly absent in the literature, probably due to main research focus on the C and N cycles. Both biochar and compost may improve carbon sequestration and soil fertility; hence, it has been recommended to use a mixture of both for sustainable land management. Here, we evaluated the effects of biochar-compost substrates on soil properties and plant growth in short rotation coppice plantations (SRC). For this purpose, we planted the tree species poplar, willow, and alder in a no-till field experiment, each of them amended in triplicate with 0 (= control) or 30 Mg ha−1 compost or biochar-compost substrates containing 15% vol. (TPS15) and 30% vol. biochar (TPS30). For three years running, we analyzed plant growth as well as soil pH, potential cation exchange capacity (CEC), stocks of soil organic carbon (SOC), total N, and plant-available phosphate and potassium oxide.Biochar-compost substrates affected most soil properties only in the topsoil and for a limited period of time. The CEC and total stocks of SOC were consistently elevated relative to the control. After three years the C gain of up to 6.4 Mg SOC ha−1 in the TPS30 plots was lower than the added C amount. Especially in the case of TPS30 treatment, C input was characterized by the greatest losses after application, although the black carbon of the biochar was not degraded in soil. Additionally, tree growth and woody biomass yield did not respond at all to the treatments. Overall, there were few if any indications that biochar-compost substrates improve the performance of SRC under temperate soil and climate conditions. Past land-use changes, intensive cropping with large proportions of root crops, and preferred use of mineral fertilizer have been made responsible for proceeding losses of soil organic C (SOC) in the plough layer. We hypothesized that in intensive agriculturally managed regions changes in SOC stocks would be detectable within a decade. To test this hypothesis, we tracked the temporal development of the concentrations and stocks of SOC in 268 arable sites, sampled by horizon down to 60 cm in the Cologne-Bonn region, W Germany, in 2005 and in 2013. We then related these changes to soil management data and humus balances obtained from farmers' surveys. As we expected that changes in SOC concentrations might at least in part be minor, we fractionated soils from 38 representative sites according to particle size in order to obtain C pools of different stability. We found that SOC concentrations had increased significantly in the topsoil (from 9.4 g kg−1 in 2005 to 9.8 g kg−1 in 2013), but had decreased significantly in the subsoil (from 4.1 g kg−1 in 2005 to 3.5 g kg−­1 in 2013). Intriguingly, these changes were due to changes in mineral-bound SOC rather than to changes in sand-sized organic matter pools. As bulk density decreased, the overall SOC stocks in the upper 60 cm exhibited a SOC loss of nearly 0.6 t C (ha · y)−1 after correction by the equivalent soil mass method. This loss was most pronounced for sandy soils [−0.73 t SOC (ha · y)−1], and less pronounced for loamy soils [−0.64 t SOC (ha · y)−1]; silty soils revealed the smallest reduction in SOC [−0.3 t SOC (ha · y)−1]. Losses of SOC occurred even with the overall humus balances having increased positively from about 20 kg C (ha · y)−1 (2003-2005) to about 133 kg C (ha · y)−1 (2005-2013) due to an improved organic fertilization and intercropping. We conclude that current management may fail to raise overall SOC stocks. In our study area SOC stocks even continued to decline, despite humus conservation practice, likely because past land use conversions (before 2005) still affect SOC dynamics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Due to the limited solubility of phosphorus (P) in soil, understanding its binding in fine colloids is vital to better forecast P dynamics and losses in agricultural systems. We hypothesized that water-dispersible P is present as nanoparticles and that iron (Fe) plays a crucial role for P binding to these nanoparticles. To test this, we isolated water-dispersible fine colloids (WDFC) from an arable topsoil (Haplic Luvisol, Germany) and assessed colloidal P forms after asymmetric flow field-flow fractionation coupled with ultraviolet and an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer, with and without removal of amorphous and crystalline Fe oxides using oxalate and dithionite, respectively. We found that fine colloidal P was present in two dominant sizes: (i) in associations of organic matter and amorphous Fe (Al) oxides in nanoparticles <20 nm, and (ii) in aggregates of fine clay, organic matter and Fe oxides (more crystalline Fe oxides) with a mean diameter of 170 to 225 nm. Solution 31P-nuclear magnetic resonance spectra indicated that the organically bound P predominantly comprised orthophosphate-monoesters. Approximately 65% of P in the WDFC was liberated after the removal of Fe oxides (especially amorphous Fe oxides). The remaining P was bound to larger-sized WDFC particles and Fe bearing phyllosilicate minerals. Intriguingly, the removal of Fe by dithionite resulted in a disaggregation of the nanoparticles, evident in higher portions of organically bound P in the <20 nm nanoparticle fraction, and a widening of size distribution pattern in larger-sized WDFC fraction. We conclude that the crystalline Fe oxides contributed to soil P sequestration by (i) acting as cementing agents contributing to soil fine colloid aggregation, and (ii) binding not only inorganic but also organic P in larger soil WDFC particles. Phosphorus (P) is an indispensable element for all life on Earth and, during the past decade, concerns about the future of its global supply have stimulated much research on soil P and method development. This review provides an overview of advanced state-of-the-art methods currently used in soil P research. These involve bulk and spatially resolved spectroscopic and spectrometric P speciation methods (1 and 2D NMR, IR, Raman, Q-TOF MS/MS, high resolution-MS, NanoSIMS, XRF, XPS, (µ)XAS) as well as methods for assessing soil P reactions (sorption isotherms, quantum-chemical modeling, microbial biomass P, enzymes activity, DGT, 33P isotopic exchange, 18O isotope ratios). Wastewater irrigation is often performed by flood irrigation, leading to changes in redox potential (Eh) of irrigated soils. In addition to soil organic matter, Fe-(hydr)oxides are important sorbents for pollutants, and biotransformation of pollutants can be accelerated under reducing conditions. Here, the influence of reducing conditions on the release of sorbed pharmaceuticals from soil and their potential accelerated dissipation was investigated in a microcosm study. Samples of a soil from the Mezquital Valley (Mexico) irrigated for 85 yr with untreated wastewater were incubated under oxidizing (Eh of 500 ± 20 mV), weakly reducing (Eh of 100 ± 20 mV), and moderately reducing (Eh of -100 ± 20 mV) soil conditions for 30 to 31 d. The concentrations of nine pharmaceuticals (bezafibrate, carbamazepine, ciprofloxacin, sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim, enrofloxacin, clarithromycin, diclofenac, and naproxen) were extracted via solid-phase extraction from soil slurries and analyzed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Low Eh did not lead to a release of formerly sorbed pharmaceuticals from the wastewater irrigated soil. High pH values (>8) of the examined soil resulting from denitrification under reducing conditions prevented the dissolution of Fe-(hydr) oxides and, hence, the potential release of pharmaceuticals. A trend of decreasing concentrations of sulfamethoxazole and bezafibrate with time under moderately reducing conditions supports previous findings of a transformation of these compounds under anaerobic conditions. Leaf area index ( LAI), a measure of canopy density, is a key variable for modelling and understanding primary productivity, and also water use and energy exchange in forest ecosystems. However, LAI varies considerably with phenology and disturbance patterns, so alternative approaches to quantifying stand-level processes should be considered. The carbon isotope composition of soil organic matter (δ13 CSOM) provides a time-integrated, productivity-weighted measure of physiological and stand-level processes, reflecting biomass deposition from seasonal to decadal time scales., Our primary aim was to explore how well LAI correlates with δ13 CSOM across biomes., Using a global data set spanning large environmental gradients in tropical, temperate and boreal forest and woodland, we assess the strength of the correlation between LAI and δ13 CSOM; we also assess climatic variables derived from the World Clim database., We found that LAI was strongly correlated with δ13 CSOM, but was also correlated with Mean Temperature of the Wettest Quarter, Mean Precipitation of Warmest Quarter and Annual Solar Radiation across and within biomes., Synthesis. Our results demonstrate that δ13 CSOM values can provide spatially explicit estimates of leaf area index ( LAI) and could therefore serve as a surrogate for productivity and water use. While δ13 CSOM has traditionally been used to reconstruct the relative abundance of C3 versus C4 species, the results of this study demonstrate that within stable C3- or C4-dominated biomes, δ13 CSOM can provide additional insights. Variations in soil moisture and surface roughness are major obstacles for the proximal sensing of soil organic C (SOC) using visible and near-infrared spectroscopy (VIS-NIRS). We gained a significant improvement of SOC prediction under field conditions with a stepwise approach. This comprised of (i) the estimation of these disturbing factors and (ii) the subsequent use of this information in multivariate SOC prediction. We took 120 surface soil samples (SOC contents 6.55-13.40 g kg-1) from a long-term trial near Bonn, Germany. To assess soil moisture, we recorded VIS-NIR spectra on <2-mm sieved disturbed samples at seven different moisture levels (air-dried to 30% w/w). The impact of roughness on VIS-NIRS performance was studied with undisturbed samples (air-dried and at different moisture levels), which were scanned with a laser profiler after fractionation into six aggregate size classes. The results confirmed that it was possible to include VIS-NIRS based assessments of soil moisture [R²adj = 0.96; root mean square error of cross validation (RMSEcv) = 1.99% w/w] into the prediction of SOC contents for sieved samples <2 mm (R²adj = 0.81-0.94; RMSEp = 0.41-0.72 g SOC kg-1). However, for rough soil surfaces, SOC contents were overestimated, and the prediction of roughness indices using VIS-NIRS failed. Fortunately, surface roughness did not impair the VIS-NIRS assessment of soil moisture. Hence, we could directly estimate moisture via VIS-NIRS in undisturbed field samples and then incorporate this information into a moisture-dependent prediction of SOC contents. More than 50% of the world's population feeds on rice. Soils used for rice production are mostly managed under submerged conditions (paddy soils). This management, which favors carbon sequestration, potentially decouples surface from subsurface carbon cycling. The objective of this study was to elucidate the long-term rates of carbon accrual in surface and subsurface soil horizons relative to those of soils under nonpaddy management. We assessed changes in total soil organic as well as of inorganic carbon stocks along a 2000-year chronosequence of soils under paddy and adjacent nonpaddy management in the Yangtze delta, China. The initial organic carbon accumulation phase lasts much longer and is more intensive than previously assumed, e.g., by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change ( IPCC). Paddy topsoils accumulated 170-178 kg organic carbon ha−1 a−1 in the first 300 years; subsoils lost 29-84 kg organic carbon ha−1 a−1 during this period of time. Subsoil carbon losses were largest during the first 50 years after land embankment and again large beyond 700 years of cultivation, due to inorganic carbonate weathering and the lack of organic carbon replenishment. Carbon losses in subsoils may therefore offset soil carbon gains or losses in the surface soils. Aim Concern about climate change, with the subsequent emergence of carbon markets and policy initiatives such as REDD (reducing carbon emissions by decreasing deforestation and forest degradation), have focused attention on assessing and monitoring terrestrial carbon reserves. Most effort has focused on above-ground forest biomass. Soil has received less attention despite containing more carbon than above-ground terrestrial biomass and the atmosphere combined. Our aim was to explore how well soil carbon concentration could be estimated on three continents from existing climate, topography and vegetation-cover data. Location Peru, Brazil, Argentina, Australia, China. Methods Soil carbon concentration and leaf area index ( LAI) as well as GIS-derived climate and topography variables for 65 temperate and 43 tropical, forest and woodland ecosystems, were either directly measured or estimated from freely available global datasets. We then used multiple regressions to determine how well soil carbon concentration could be predicted from LAI, climate and topography at a given site. We compared our measurements with top soil carbon estimates from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations ( FAO) harmonized world soil map. Results Our empirical model based on estimates of temperature, water availability and plant productivity provided a good estimate of soil carbon concentrations ( R2 = 0.79). In contrast, the values of topsoil carbon concentrations from the FAO harmonized world soil map correlated poorly with the measured values of soil carbon concentration ( R2 = 0.0011). Main conclusions The lack of correlation between the measured values of soil carbon and the values from the FAO harmonized world soil map indicate that substantial improvements in the production of soil carbon maps are needed and possible. Our results demonstrate that the inclusion of freely available GIS data offers improved estimates of soil carbon and will allow the creation of more accurate soil carbon maps. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Precipitation and topsoil samples from a climate transect over the Scandinavian Mountains, Norway, were analyzed for bulk and compound-specific δ18O values. The natural abundance of 18O in the plant-derived hemicellulose biomarkers arabinose and xylose correlates positively with δ18O of bulk soil, but not with δ18O of precipitation. Biochar applications to soils can improve soil fertility by increasing the soil's cation exchange capacity (CEC) and nutrient retention. Because biochar amendment may occur with the applications of organic fertilizers, we tested to which extent composting with farmyard manure increases CEC and nutrient content of charcoal and gasification coke. Both types of biochar absorbed leachate generated during the composting process. As a result, the moisture content of gasification coke increased from 0.02 to 0.94 g g−1, and that of charcoal increased from 0.03 to 0.52 g g−1. With the leachate, the chars absorbed organic matter and nutrients, increasing contents of water‐extractable organic carbon (gasification coke: from 0.09 to 7.00 g kg−1; charcoal: from 0.03 to 3.52 g kg−1), total soluble nitrogen (gasification coke: from not detected to 705.5 mg kg−1; charcoal: from 3.2 to 377.2 mg kg−1), plant‐available phosphorus (gasification coke: from 351 to 635 mg kg−1; charcoal: from 44 to 190 mg kg−1), and plant‐available potassium (gasification coke: from 6.0 to 15.3 g kg−1; charcoal: from 0.6 to 8.5 g kg−1). The potential CEC increased from 22.4 to 88.6 mmolc kg−1 for the gasification coke and from 20.8 to 39.0 mmolc kg−1 for the charcoal. There were little if any changes in the contents and patterns of benzene polycarboxylic acids of the biochars, suggesting that degradation of black carbon during the composting process was negligible. The surface area of the biochars declined during the composting process due to the clogging of micropores by sorbed compost‐derived materials. The article presents a study which examines the association on environmental risks because of using fluoroquinolone antibiotics in animal husbandry and human therapeutics. Difloxacin was administered to pigs and used the contaminated manure to soil, and examined the sequestration and dissipation of difloxacin in soil in the presence and absence of plants. The effect of antibiotic on nitrogen turnover in soil (potential denitrification and nitrification) is also examined. The study shows that difloxacin was very persistent and hardly (bio) accessible under all conditions studied.

Stable isotope natural abundance measurements integrate across several biogeochemical processes in ecosystem N and C dynamics. Here, we report trends in natural isotope abundance (δ13 C and δ15 N in plant and soil) along a climosequence of 33 N othofagus forest stands located within Patagonia, Southern Argentina. We measured 28 different abiotic variables (both climatic variables and soil properties) to characterize environmental conditions at each of the 33 sites. Foliar δ13 C values ranged from −35.4‰ to −27.7‰, and correlated positively with foliar δ15 N values, ranging from −3.7‰ to 5.2‰. Soil δ13 C and δ15 N values reflected the isotopic trends of the foliar tissues and ranged from −29.8‰ to −25.3‰, and −4.8‰ to 6.4‰, respectively, with no significant differences between N othofagus species ( N othofagus pumilio, N othofagus antarctica, N othofagus betuloides). Principal component analysis and multiple regressions suggested that mainly water availability variables (mean annual precipitation), but not soil properties, explained between 42% and 79% of the variations in foliar and soil δ13 C and δ15 N natural abundance, which declined with increased moisture supply. We conclude that a decline in water use efficiency at wetter sites promotes both the depletion of heavy C and N isotopes in soil and plant biomass. Soil δ13 C values were higher than those of the plant tissues and this difference increased as annual precipitation increased. No such differences were apparent when δ15 N values in soil and plant were compared, which indicates that climatic differences contributed more to the overall C balance than to the overall N balance in these forest ecosystems. Lowland rice paddy soils may accumulate significant amounts of organic matter. Our aim was to investigate the role of prolonged paddy management on the nitrogen ( N) status of the soils, and to elucidate the contribution of bacteria and fungi to long-term N accumulation processes. For this purpose, we sampled a chronosequence of 0-2000 years of rice cropping with adjacent non-paddy systems in the Bay of Hangzhou, China. The samples were analyzed for bulk density, total, mineral and microbial N ( Nmic), and amino sugars as markers for microbial residues. The results showed that during the first 100 years of land embankment, both paddy and non-paddy soils accumulated N at a rate of up to 61 and 77 kg ha−1 per annum, reaching steady-state conditions after 110-172 years, respectively. Final N stocks in paddy fields exceeded those of the non-paddies by a factor of 1.3. The contribution of amino sugars to total N increased to a maximum of 34 g N kg−1 N in both land-use systems, highlighting a significant accumulation of N in microbial residues of the surface soils. Correspondingly, the ratio of Nmic to microbial residue- N decreased to a constant value. In the paddy subsoils, we found that bacterial residues particularly contributed to the pool of microbial residue- N. Nevertheless, the absolute contents of amino sugars in paddy subsoils decreased during the last 1700 years of the chronosequence. We conclude that under paddy cultivation, soil microorganisms may accumulate parts of this N in their residues despite low overall N availability. However, this N accumulation is limited to initial stages of paddy soil development and restricted to the surface horizons, thus challenging its sustainability with future land-use changes. Black carbon (BC) is the product of incomplete burning processes and a significant component of the passive soil organic carbon (SOC) pool. The role of BC in the global carbon cycle is still unclear. This study aimed to quantify and characterize BC in major grassland ecosystems of the world. Twenty-eight representative soil profiles (mainly Mollisols) were sampled in the Russian Steppe, the U.S. Great Plains, the Argentinian Pampa, the Manchurian Plains in China, and the Chemozem region in central Germany. Black carbon contents were estimated using benzene polycarboxylic acids (BPCA) as a molecular marker, and indications about the origin of the BC were derived from bulk and compound-specific δ13C analyses and radiocarbon dating of bulk soil organic matter (SOM). Our findings suggest that between 5% and 30% of SOC stocks consist of BC. Maximum BC contributions to SOC frequently were found at deeper parts of the A horizon with 14C ages younger than 7000 years BP; that is, incorporation of C as charred particles accompanied ecosystem development since the mid-Holocene. Most of this BC formed from local vegetation, as indicated by a 13C isotope signature similar to that of bulk SOM. At some sites, also nonlocal sources contributed to soil BC, e.g., fossil fuel BC inputs at the German sites. Black carbon stocks were highest in Chernozems and lowest in Kastanozems. The Russian Steppe and Chinese Manchurian sites stored about 3-4 times more BC (around 3 kg m-2) than did the other sites because of thicker A horizons that were rich in BC. The study uses elemental analysis and X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) to investigate the long-term influences anthropogenically mediated transitions coming from natural to managed ecosystems.

Crucial steps in geochemical cycles are in many cases performed by more than one group of microorganisms, but the significance of this functional redundancy with respect to ecosystem functioning is poorly understood. Ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and their bacterial counterparts (AOB) are a perfect system to address this question: although performing the same transformation step, they belong to well-separated phylogenetic groups. Using pig manure amended with different concentrations of sulfadiazine (SDZ), an antibiotic that is frequently used in veterinary medicine, it was possible to affect AOB and AOA to different degrees. Addition of manure stimulated growth of AOB in both soils and, interestingly, also growth of AOA was considerably stimulated in one of the soils. The antibiotic treatments decreased the manure effect notably on AOB, whereas AOA were affected to a lower extent. Model calculations concerning the respective proportions of AOA and AOB in ammonia oxidation indicate a substantial contribution of AOA in one of the soils that further increased under the influence of SDZ, hence indicating functional redundancy between AOA and AOB. Anthropogenic perturbations have profoundly modified the Earth's biogeochemical cycles, the most prominent of these changes being manifested by global carbon (C) cycling. We investigated long-term effects of human-induced land-use and land-cover changes from native tropical forest (Kenya) and subtropical grassland (South Africa) ecosystems to agriculture on the dynamics and structural composition of soil organic C (SOC) using elemental analysis and integrated 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) and synchrotron-based Fourier transform infrared-attenuated total reflectance (Sr-FTIR-ATR) spectroscopy. Anthropogenic interventions led to the depletion of 76%, 86% and 67% of the total SOC; and 77%, 85% and 66% of the N concentrations from the surface soils of Nandi, Kakamega and the South African sites, respectively, over a period of up to 100 years. Significant proportions of the total SOC (46–73%) and N (37–73%) losses occurred during the first 4 years of conversion indicating that these forest-and grassland-derived soils contain large amounts of labile soil organic matter (SOM), potentially vulnerable to degradation upon human-induced land-use and land-cover changes. Anthropogenic perturbations altered not only the C sink capacity of these soils, but also the functional group composition and dynamics of SOC with time, rendering structural composition of the resultant organic matter in the agricultural soils to be considerably different from the SOM under natural forest and grassland ecosystems. These molecular level compositional changes were manifested: (i) by the continued degradation of O-alkyl and acetal-C structures found in carbohydrate and holocellulose biomolecules, some labile aliphatic-C functionalities, (ii) by side-chain oxidation of phenylpropane units of lignin and (iii) by the continued aromatization and aliphatization of the humic fractions possibly through selective accumulation of recalcitrant H and C substituted aryl-C and aliphatic-C components such as (poly)-methylene units, respectively. These changes appeared as early as the fourth year after transition, and their intensity increased with duration of cultivation until a new quasi-equilibrium of SOC was approached at about 20 years after conversion. However, subtle but persistent changes in molecular structures of the resultant SOM continued long after (up to 100 years) a steady state for SOC was approached. These molecular level changes in the inherent structural composition of SOC may exert considerable influence on biogeochemical cycling of C and bioavailability of essential nutrients present in association with SOM, and may significantly affect the sustainability of agriculture as well as potentials of the soils to sequester C in these tropical and subtropical highland agroecosystems.
