SWEET genes encode sugar transporter proteins and often function as susceptibility (S) genes. Consequently, the recessive alleles of these SWEET genes provide resistance. This review summarizes the available literature on the molecular basis of the role of SWEET genes (as S genes) in the host and corresponding transcription activator‐like effectors (TALEs) secreted by the pathogen. The review has four major sections, which follow a brief introduction: The first part gives some details about the occurrence and evolution of SWEET genes in approximately 30 plant species; the second part gives some details about systems where (a) SWEET genes with and without TALEs and (b) TALEs without SWEET genes cause different diseases; the third part summarizes the available information about TALEs along with interfering/truncated TALEs secreted by the pathogens; this section also summarizes the available information on effector‐binding elements (EBEs) available in the promoters of either the SWEET genes or the Executor R genes; the code that is used for binding of TALEs to EBEs is also described in this section; the fourth part gives some details about the available approaches that are being used or can be used in the future for exploiting SWEET genes for developing disease‐resistant cultivars. The review concludes with a section giving conclusions and future possibilities of using SWEET genes for developing disease‐resistant cultivars using different approaches, including conventional breeding and genome editing. To assess the effect of alien cytoplasm and fertility restorer genes on agronomic and physiological traits in Brassica juncea, cytoplasmic male sterile ( CMS) and fertility restorer lines involving five alloplasms in three nuclear backgrounds were constituted through repeated backcrossing. These lines were evaluated along with euplasmic lines for agronomic traits in field experiments. Respiration efficiency of in vitro cultured hypocotyls, and chlorophyll content in leaves were also estimated. Significant adverse effects of trachystoma and catholica cytoplasms on yield-contributing traits and yield were noticed. The restorer gene corrected the floral defects in CMS trachystoma and restored yield to the level of euplasmic line, while it did so only partly in CMS catholica. Restorer genes had no adverse effect on traits in any of the systems. On the contrary, the Rf gene of moricandia CMS system exerted a positive effect on leaf chlorophyll content. Likewise, in vitro assay indicated the moricandia CMS system as vigorous. The moricandia CMS plants gave higher seed yield perhaps due to overall better vigour and higher leaf chlorophyll content. It is known that nearly one-third of the world population currently suffers from malnutrition due to lack of availability of adequate quantity of protein, vitamins and a number of micronutrients including Fe and Zn in their diet. A lack of other desirable bioactive compounds and dietary fibres ( DF) in the diet also causes a variety of diseases. In some regions of the world, occurrence of Cd and As in wheat grain in excess of tolerance limits also adversely affects human health. In this short review, we summarize the current status of knowledge about the genetic control of the accumulation of a variety of nutritional constituents in wheat grain and then describe examples where noticeable improvements have been made using breeding approaches. We also describe the gaps that need to be bridged for better understanding of the genetic architecture of these important traits. The development and use of molecular markers in marker-assisted selection ( MAS) for developing wheat varieties with improved grain quality has also been discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Jute is an important crop of the Indian subcontinent and comprises tossa jute (Corchorus olitorius) and white jute (C. capsularis). The yield and fiber quality of this crop remained stagnant for many years and could not be improved through conventional plant breeding. Also, no effort has been made to develop molecular markers on a scale required for marker-assisted selection (MAS) to supplement conventional plant breeding. As a first step toward deploying MAS for jute improvement, 2469 simple sequence repeats (SSRs) were developed in tossa jute (JRO 524) using four SSR-enriched genomic libraries. A random subset of 100 SSRs (25 SSRs from each library) was used to detect polymorphism between the parental genotypes of each of the two recombinant inbred line (RIL) mapping populations. The RILs are being developed from JRO 524 × PPO4 (for fiber fineness) and JRC 321 × CMU 010 (for lignin content) crosses to prepare molecular maps and conduct quantitative trait loci (QTL) analyses. Both SSR length polymorphism and ± polymorphism (null alleles, i.e., presence and absence of specific SSR) were detected; 50 SSRs detected polymorphism between the two genotypes of tossa jute, whereas 45 SSRs detected polymorphism between the two genotypes of white jute. This SSR allelic polymorphism in jute is higher than that reported in other crops and is adequate for construction of genetic maps for OIL analysis. In bread wheat, 21 anchored simple sequence repeat (SSR) primer pairs detecting SSR length polymorphism and 42 anchored SSR primers detecting microsatellite-anchored fragment length polymorphisms (MFLPs) are reported. Eight bread wheat genotypes were used for detecting polymorphism. The number of alleles in SSR analysis ranged from two to six, with a mean of 2.9 alleles per SSR. The number of polymorphic bands in MFLP ranged from two to 40, with a mean of 12.74 polymorphic bands/primer combination, the SSRs with CT/GA motifs giving the highest level of polymorphism (a mean of 18.37 bands). The average value of polymorphic information content (PIC) was 0.473 for SSRs and 0.061 for MFLP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
