Objectives Methods Results Conclusion It is not known whether cancer‐specific mortality (CSM) differences distinguish radical cystectomy (RC) from trimodal therapy (TMT) in octogenarians harbouring organ‐confined (T2N0M0) urothelial cancer of the urinary bladder (UCUB).Within the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database (2004–2021), CSM and other‐cause mortality (OCM) rates were computed in octogenarian patients with organ‐confined UCUB undergoing either TMT or RC. Smoothed cumulative incidence plots depicted 5‐year CSM and OCM rates according to RC vs TMT. Competing risks regression (CRR) models were fitted, adjusting for age, gender, and race/ethnicity. Nearest‐neighbour 1:1 propensity‐score matching (PSM) for age and gender was also applied. Sensitivity analyses were additionally performed, focusing on White patients.Of 2335 octogenarian patients with T2N0M0 UCUB, 1562 (66.3%) received TMT and 793 (33.7%) received RC. Of those, 2082 (88.4%) were White. TMT rates increased from 53.5% in 2004 to 82.2% in 2021 (P < 0.001). The 5‐year CSM rate was 50.1% for TMT vs 31.1% for RC. After multivariable CRR, TMT independently predicted 1.7‐fold higher CSM (P < 0.001). After additional PSM, TMT also independently predicted 1.7‐fold higher CSM (P < 0.001). In sensitivity analyses exclusively focusing on White patients, almost identical results were recorded.Rates of TMT have nearly doubled in octogenarian patients with organ‐confined UCUB in recent years; however, CSM rates after TMT are also nearly twice as high as those observed after RC. The overall survival (OS) improvement after the advent of several novel systemic therapies, designed for treatment of metastatic urothelial carcinoma of the urinary bladder (mUCUB), is not conclusively studied in either contemporary UCUB patients and/or non‐UCUB patients. Within the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database, contemporary (2017–2020) and historical (2000–2016) systemic therapy‐exposed metastatic UCUB and, subsequently, non‐UCUB patients were identified. Separate Kaplan–Meier and multivariable Cox regression (CRM) analyses first addressed OS in mUCUB and, subsequently, in metastatic non‐UCUB (mn‐UCUB). Of 3443 systemic therapy‐exposed patients, 2725 (79%) harbored mUCUB versus 709 (21%) harbored mn‐UCUB. Of 2725 mUCUB patients, 582 (21%) were contemporary (2017–2020) versus 2143 (79%) were historical (2000–2016). In mUCUB, median OS was 11 months in contemporary versus 8 months in historical patients (Δ = 3 months; p <.0001). After multivariable CRM, contemporary membership status (2017–2020) independently predicted lower overall mortality (OM; hazard ratio [HR] = 0.68, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.60–0.76; p <.001). Of 709 mn‐UCUB patients, 167 (24%) were contemporary (2017–2020) and 542 (76%) were historical (2000–2016). In mn‐UCUB, median OS was 8 months in contemporary versus 7 months in historical patients (Δ = 1 month; p =.034). After multivariable CRM, contemporary membership status (2017–2020) was associated with HR of 0.81 (95% CI = 0.66–1.01; p =.06). In conclusion, contemporary systemic therapy‐exposed metastatic patients exhibited better OS in UCUB. However, the magnitude of survival benefit was threefold higher in mUCUB and approximated the survival benefits recorded in prospective randomized trials of novel systemic therapies. Objective: New indices of dyslipidemia, such as the Atherogenic Index of Plasma (AIP) or Castelli Risk Index I and II (CR‐I/II), have been tested to predict erectile dysfunction (ED). The aim of this study was to assess the role of these lipidic scores in predicting severe ED and erectile function (EF) worsening in patients who underwent robot‐assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP). Methods: Data from 1249 prostate cancer patients who underwent RARP at our single tertiary academic referral center from September 2021 to April 2023 were reviewed. RARP patients with a complete lipid panel were included in the final analysis. Two independent multivariable logistic regression models (LRMs) were fitted to identify predictors of ED severity and worsening in RARP patients. Results: Among the 357 RARP patients, the median age was 70 (interquartile range [IQR]: 65–74), and the median BMI was 28.4 (IQR: 26–30.4). According to the preoperative IIEF5, 115 (32.2%), 86 (24.5%), 26 (7.3%), and 40 (11.2%) were mild, mild‐moderate, moderate, and severe ED patients, respectively. After multivariable LRMs predicting severe ED, only the nerve‐sparing (NS) approach (odds ratio [OR]: 0.09) as well as the preoperative IIEF5 score (OR: 0.32) were independent predictors (p < 0.001). After LRMs predicting EF worsening, only preoperative IIEF5 was an independent predictor (OR: 1.42, p < 0.001). Conclusion: The power of novel lipidic scores in predicting severe ED and EF worsening in RARP patients was low, and they should not be routinely applied as a screening method in this patient subgroup. Objective: To address cancer‐specific mortality free‐survival (CSM‐FS) differences in patients with urothelial carcinoma of the urinary bladder (UCUB) vs non‐UCUB who underwent trimodal therapy (TMT), according to organ confined (OC: T2N0M0) vs non‐organ confined (NOC: T3–4NanyM0 or TanyN1–3M0) clinical stages. Patients and Methods: Within the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database (2004–2020), we identified patients with cT2–T4N0–N3M0 bladder cancer treated with TMT, defined as the combination of transurethral resection of bladder tumour, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. Temporal trends described TMT use over time. Kaplan–Meier plots and multivariable Cox regression (MCR) models addressed CSM in UCUB vs non‐UCUB according to OC vs NOC stages. Results: Of 5130 assessable TMT‐treated patients, 425 (8%) harboured non‐UCUB vs 4705 (92%) who had UCUB. The TMT rates increased for patients with OC UCUB from 92.4% to 96.8% (estimated annual percentage change of 0.4%, P < 0.001), but not in the NOC stages (P = 0.3). In the OC stage, the median CSM‐FS was 36 months in patients with non‐UCUB vs 60 months in those with UCUB, respectively (P = 0.01). Conversely, in the NOC stage, the median CSM‐FS was 23 months both in UCUB and non‐UCUB (P = 0.9). In the MCR models addressing OC stage, non‐UCUB histology independently predicted higher CSM (hazard ratio 1.45, P = 0.004), but not in the NOC stage (P = 0.9). Conclusion: In OC UCUB, TMT rates have increased over time in a guideline‐consistent fashion. Patients with OC non‐UCUB treated with TMT showed a CSM disadvantage relative to OC UCUB. Questions: To comprehensively understand ecological dynamics within a forest ecosystem, it is vital to explore how surrounding trees influence the growth of individual trees in a community. This study investigates the importance of biotic interactions on tree growth by examining several metrics of competitive interactions and community structure and considering three classes of intrinsic growth rates among the focal individuals: slower, intermediate, and faster‐growing trees. We also separated the focal trees based on their canopy position. Location: Brazilian subtropical forests. Methods: We assessed various factors related to the focal trees and their neighbors, including differences in traits, neighborhood crowding, phylogenetic distance, and overall trait composition within the community. We then ran linear mixed‐effects models to test how these different metrics influenced the growth rates of the focal trees. Results: Our results indicate that phylogenetic distance is linked to higher growth. Specific leaf area (SLA), leaf area (LA), and wood density (WD) are significantly related to tree growth. Trees surrounded by neighbors with higher SLA than themselves grow better, particularly smaller trees. Similarly, taller trees with smaller LA than their neighbors grow better. Trees in the intermediary growth class grow better when they have higher WD than their neighbors. Conversely, smaller trees benefit from greater WD difference between the focal trees and their neighbors, while height difference negatively impacts faster‐growing trees. Moreover, communities with higher SLA and WD positively impact the growth of faster‐growing trees. Conclusions: We conclude that the interactions between trees are mediated by their ecological differences, but the performance and responses to surrounding competitors vary along with their grow class and position within a community. How biodiversity underpins ecosystem resistance (i.e. ability to withstand environmental perturbations) and recovery (i.e. ability to return to a pre‐perturbation state), and thus, stability under extreme climatic events is a timely question in ecology. To date, most studies have focussed on the role of taxonomic diversity, neglecting how community functional composition and diversity beget stability under exceptional climatic conditions. In addition, land use potentially modulates how biodiversity and ecosystem functions respond to extreme climatic conditions.Using an 11‐year time‐series of plant biomass from 150 permanent grassland plots spanning a gradient of land‐use intensity, we examined how taxonomic and functional components of biodiversity affected resistance and recovery of biomass under extreme drought.The association between biodiversity, land use and biomass varied across years, especially in the driest years. Species‐rich or functionally diverse communities (associated with low land‐use intensity) buffered extreme droughts better, while species‐poor communities or those dominated by fast‐growing species (associated with high land‐use intensity) had higher recovery capabilities after a moderate‐to‐extreme drought.Synthesis. Our results show that plant community functional and taxonomic components determine grasslands resistance and recovery under moderate‐to‐extreme drought. In turn, this points to the importance of designing landscapes with both extensively and intensively managed grasslands. Functionally or taxonomically rich communities (favoured under low land‐use intensity) would preserve biomass under extreme droughts, whereas species‐poor or fast‐growing communities (favoured by high land‐use intensity) would restore biomass after extreme droughts. Aim: Identifying the drivers of ecological stability is critical for ensuring the maintenance of ecosystem functioning and services, particularly in a changing world. Different ecological mechanisms by which biological communities stabilize ecosystem functions (i.e. "stabilizing effects") have been proposed, yet with various theoretical expectations and debated conclusions. Here we propose a unified framework that aims at reconciling, and combining, different approaches to reliably test the strength of three stabilizing effects on the temporal constancy of ecosystem functions: the effects of (a) dominant species, (b) species asynchrony, and (c) diversity. Innovation: Compared to existing developments the approach allows, for the first time, disentangling these three stabilizing effects at the level of individual communities. So far this was not possible, and conclusions depended on indirect tests and comparative analyses across communities. We also propose a graphical representation of the relative contributions of the three stabilizing effects on a ternary plot, allowing us to easily compare communities sampled in various ecological contexts in a standardized space. Main conclusions: Our study answers the current need for a unified framework to link theoretical concepts on the temporal stability of ecological communities to data analysis. Tropical rainforest trees host a diverse arthropod fauna that can be characterised by their functional diversity (FD) and phylogenetic diversity (PD). Human disturbance degrades tropical forests, often coinciding with species invasion and altered assembly that leads to a decrease in FD and PD. Tree canopies are thought to be particularly vulnerable, but rarely investigated.Here, we studied the effects of forest disturbance on an ecologically important invertebrate group, the ants, in a lowland rainforest in New Guinea. We compared an early successional disturbed plot (secondary forest) to an old‐growth plot (primary forest) by exhaustively sampling their ant communities in a total of 852 trees.We expected that for each tree community (1) disturbance would decrease FD and PD in tree‐dwelling ants, mediated through species invasion. (2) Disturbance would decrease ant trait variation due to a more homogeneous environment. (3) The main drivers behind these changes would be different contributions of true tree‐nesting species and visiting species. We calculated FD and PD based on a species‐level phylogeny and 10 ecomorphological traits. Furthermore, we assessed by data exclusion the influence of species, which were not nesting in individual trees (visitors) or only nesting species (nesters), and of non‐native species on FD and PD.Primary forests had higher ant species richness and PD than secondary forest. However, we consistently found increased FD in secondary forest. This pattern was robust even if we decoupled functional and phylogenetic signals, or if non‐native ant species were excluded from the data. Visitors did not contribute strongly to FD, but they increased PD and their community weighted trait means often varied from nesters. Moreover, all community‐weighted trait means changed after forest disturbance.Our finding of contradictory FD and PD patterns highlights the importance of integrative measures of diversity. Our results indicate that the tree community trait diversity is not negatively affected, but possibly even enhanced by disturbance. Therefore, the functional diversity of arboreal ants is relatively robust when compared between old‐growth and young trees. Aims: We introduce ReSurveyEurope — a new data source of resurveyed vegetation plots in Europe, compiled by a collaborative network of vegetation scientists. We describe the scope of this initiative, provide an overview of currently available data, governance, data contribution rules, and accessibility. In addition, we outline further steps, including potential research questions. Results: ReSurveyEurope includes resurveyed vegetation plots from all habitats. Version 1.0 of ReSurveyEurope contains 283,135 observations (i.e., individual surveys of each plot) from 79,190 plots sampled in 449 independent resurvey projects. Of these, 62,139 (78%) are permanent plots, that is, marked in situ, or located with GPS, which allow for high spatial accuracy in resurvey. The remaining 17,051 (22%) plots are from studies in which plots from the initial survey could not be exactly relocated. Four data sets, which together account for 28,470 (36%) plots, provide only presence/absence information on plant species, while the remaining 50,720 (64%) plots contain abundance information (e.g., percentage cover or cover–abundance classes such as variants of the Braun‐Blanquet scale). The oldest plots were sampled in 1911 in the Swiss Alps, while most plots were sampled between 1950 and 2020. Conclusions: ReSurveyEurope is a new resource to address a wide range of research questions on fine‐scale changes in European vegetation. The initiative is devoted to an inclusive and transparent governance and data usage approach, based on slightly adapted rules of the well‐established European Vegetation Archive (EVA). ReSurveyEurope data are ready for use, and proposals for analyses of the data set can be submitted at any time to the coordinators. Still, further data contributions are highly welcome. Background: The aim of the current study is to measure the prevalence and the potential role of International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) score as a predictor of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) in male experienced lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). Methods: A cross‐sectional web‐based Italian survey was administered via Google Forms between July 17 and October 31, 2022. The urinary functioning was measured through the IPSS questionnaire. Specifically, we considered symptoms occurring more than "about half the time" (score ≥ 3) as bothering symptoms. Multivariable logistic regression models (LRMs) adjusting for age, body mass index (BMI), International Index of Erectile Function‐5, IPSS, and hypertension were fitted to predict OSAS in the cohort of men responding to the survey and experiencing LUTS. Results: Overall, 58 (24.4%) patients had a confirmed diagnosis of OSAS. The overall median IPSS was 5 (inter quartile range [IQR]: 3–8), respectively. According to IPSS items, 24 (10%), 44 (18.4%), 12 (5%), 12 (5%), 12 (5%), 11 (4.6%), 63 (26.4%) patients exhibit incomplete bladder emptying, urinary frequency, intermittency, urgency, weak stream, straining, nocturia with a score ≥ 3, respectively. After multivariable LRMs predicting the developing OSAS, age (odds ratio [OR]: 1.09, p < 0.001), BMI (OR:1.12, p < 0.001) and IPSS total score (OR:1.08, p = 0.02) were independent predicting factors. Conclusion: This analysis revealed that the IPSS total score, age, and BMI are independent predictors of OSAS in males. In this context, the use of IPSS in daily practice could be helpful in assessing the LUTS presence and in supporting physicians to identify a hidden sleep apnea condition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

One of J.P. Grime's greatest achievements was demonstrating the importance of the relationship between the environment and plant functional traits for understanding community assembly processes and the effects of biodiversity on ecosystem functioning. A popular approach assessing trait–environment relationships is the community weighted means (CWMs) method, which evaluates changes in communities' average trait values along gradients, with Grime being among its first practitioners.Today the CWM method is well‐established but some scholars have criticized it for inflated Type I errors. That is, in some scenarios of compositional turnover along a gradient, CWM tests can provide significant results even for randomly generated traits. Null models have been proposed to correct for such effects by randomizing trait values across species (CWM‐sp). We review different approaches relating traits to the environment within the framework of the accepted dichotomy between species‐level (observations are species) versus community‐level (observations are community parameters) analyses. Between these families of analyses and their combinations, a great variety of methods exist that test different trait–environment relationships, each with different null hypotheses and ecological questions.In classic CWM tests, the null hypothesis focuses on characteristics of trait distributions at the community level along gradients. The Type I error rate should not be a priori considered inflated when this test is used to identify changes in community trait structure affecting the functioning of communities. Trait changes observed with CWM tests may be accurate, but the interpretation that a specific trait drives turnover may be fallacious. Approaches like CWM‐sp may be more appropriate for testing other ecological hypotheses, such as whether trait–environment relationships are widespread across species. In effect, this moves the ecological focus towards species‐level analyses, that is on the adaptive value of traits and their relation to species niches.Synthesis. There is no single trait–environment relationship. Species‐level and community‐level analyses, including variants within them, test different relationships with different null hypotheses, such that the potential for inflated error rates can be misleading. An accumulating body of evidence indicates that natural plant populations harbour a large diversity of transposable elements (TEs). TEs, which are especially mobilized under genomic and/or environmental stress, provide genetic and epigenetic variation that can substantially translate into a diversity of plant phenotypes within populations. However, it remains unclear what the potential ecological effects of diversity in TEs within an otherwise genetically uniform population are in terms of phenotypic diversity's effects on coexistence and ecosystem functioning.Using Arabidopsis thaliana as a proof‐of‐concept model, we assembled populations from individuals differing in the number and positions of ONSEN retrotransposon and tested whether the increasing diversity created by the ONSEN retrotransposon increased the phenotypic diversity of populations and enhanced their functioning under different environmental conditions.We demonstrate that TE‐generated variation creates differentiation in ecologically important traits connected to different axes of the plant 'economics' spectrum. In particular, we show that Arabidopsis populations with increasing diversity of individuals differing in the ONSEN retrotransposon had higher phenotypic and functional diversity in resource use‐related traits. Such increased diversity enhanced population productivity and reduced the performance of interspecific competitors.Synthesis. We conclude that TE‐generated phenotypic and functional diversity can have similar effects on ecosystems as are usually documented for other biological diversity effects. The results of our experiment open up new fields of investigation, highlighting the ecological relevance of unexplored sources of phenotypic variability and hopefully inspiring functional trait ecologists and evolutionary biologists to begin exploring new questions at the intersection of their fields. Ecological differences between coexisting species within plant communities can be assessed by considering functional and phylogenetic dissimilarities either separately or in a complementary way. Here, we studied (a) the potential overlap between functional (FD) and phylogenetic diversities (PD) and (b) their combined and unique roles in explaining community assembly patterns across different temperate vegetation types and across functional traits representing multiple dimensions of plant strategy (plant size, leaf, floral and reproductive, clonal and bud bank traits).We tested the strength of the PD–FD relationship within and across vegetation types and functional traits (Pearson correlations) and tested whether it depended on the strength of the phylogenetic signal (Pagel's lambda and Blomberg's K). We tested deviations from random expectations in FD and 'decoupled FD' (i.e. functional dissimilarity after accounting for the effect of phylogenetic distances between species) to reveal the importance of ecological differences for community assembly.PD–FD correlations were predominantly significant but rarely strong, and largely depended on the studied functional trait and vegetation type. Phylogenetic signals were partially but inconsistently related to the overlap between FD and PD.Community assembly patterns tended to shift from under‐dispersion (FD lower than random expectations) towards over‐dispersion (FD higher than random expectations) when functional distances were decoupled from phylogenetic distances indicating that species within the same clade were dissimilar to each other regarding their traits. However, we found the opposite pattern as well, mainly for floral and below‐ground traits, which indicated functional differentiation across clades.Synthesis. Decoupling functional and phylogenetic differences between species might provide further information on plant community assembly: showing cases where the strongest ecological differentiation between coexisting species occurs between phylogenetically related species rather than between phylogenetically unrelated ones. Global change pressures are highlighting the need to better understand the mechanisms driving the temporal stability of natural communities under different environmental conditions. There is ample evidence that species richness helps communities to withstand environmental fluctuations and stabilise over time. However, it is still debated whether richness promotes stability through the diversity of species functional traits, phylogenetic lineages and ecological strategies in the community or because of the likelihood of including stable species. Furthermore, it is unclear whether the positive effect of diversity on stability is maintained in conditions of strong environmental fluctuations (e.g. frequent disturbances and stress).To address these questions, we analysed long‐term monitoring data of 84 permanent plots in coastal dune plant communities distributed along a gradient of natural stress and disturbance, with communities closer to the sea subject to greater stress and more frequent disturbances. Specifically, we used structural equation models to disentangle the relative influence of the environmental gradient and the different diversity components (species richness, functional and phylogenetic diversity; SR, FD and PD), as well as of the dominant ecological strategy (captured by species lifespan) on community stability, through their effect on two key stability mechanisms (population stability and species asynchrony).We found that the sea–inland environmental gradient was the main driver of stability mechanisms. Stress and disturbance decreased both population stability and species asynchrony, but also reduced species richness, which thus exerted a stabilising effect only on the communities in more favourable environmental conditions.Surprisingly, we did not find an effect of FD and PD on community stability, neither directly nor via asynchrony. However, the dominance of perennial species mitigated the instability generated by stress and disturbance. Perennial species were on average more stable than annuals and displayed a wider range of species fluctuations, including compensatory dynamics among species (i.e. asynchrony).Synthesis: Overall, our results highlight the importance of accounting for the environmental context when examining mechanisms of community stability. Species richness remains a useful direct predictor of community stability. Species ecological strategies, like the acquisitive–conservative trade‐off connected to lifespan, however, should also be routinely considered as drivers of both population stability and compensatory dynamics. Research over the past decade has shown that quantifying spatial variation in ecosystem properties is an effective approach to investigating the effects of environmental change on ecosystems. Yet, current consensus among scientists is that we need a better understanding of short‐ and long‐term (temporal) variation in ecosystem properties to plan effective ecosystem management and predict future ecologies.Trait‐based approaches can be used to reconstruct ecosystem properties from long‐term ecological records and contribute significantly to developing understandings of ecosystem change over decadal to millennial time‐scales.Here, we synthesise current trait‐based approaches and explore how organisms' functional traits (FTs) can be scaled across time and space. We propose a framework for reconstructing long‐term variation in ecosystems by means of analysing FTs derived from palaeoecological datasets. We then summarise challenges that must be overcome to reconcile trait‐based approaches with palaeo‐datasets. Finally, we discuss the benefits and limitations of trait‐based reconstructions of ecosystem temporal dynamics and suggest future directions for research.Reconstructing environmental properties through time vis‐à‐vis FTs can be separated into two parts. The first is to record trait data for organisms present in modern ecosystems, and the second is to reconstruct temporal variability in FTs from palaeoecological datasets, capturing changes in trait composition over time. Translating palaeoecological datasets into FTs is challenging due to taphonomic, taxonomic and chronological uncertainties, as well as uniformitarian assumptions. Explicitly identifying and addressing these challenges is important to effectively calculate changes in FT through time.Palaeo‐trait research offers insights into questions related to short‐ and long‐term ecosystem functioning, environmental change and extinction and community assembly rules across time. As work in this area matures, we expect that trait‐based approaches integrating palaeoecology and neo‐ecology will improve understanding of past ecologies and provide a deeper insight of their implications for present‐day and future ecosystem management and conservation. While biodiversity is expected to enhance multiple ecosystem functions (EFs), the different roles of multiple biodiversity dimensions remain difficult to disentangle without carefully designed experiments. We sowed plant communities with independent levels of functional (FD) and phylogenetic diversities (PD), combined with different levels of fertilization, to investigate their direct and indirect roles on multiple EFs, including plant‐related EFs (plant biomass productivity, litter decomposability), soil fertility (organic carbon and nutrient pool variables), soil microbial activity (respiration and nutrient cycling), and an overall multifunctionality. We expected an increase in most EFs in communities with higher values of FD and/or PD via complementarity effects, but also the dominant plant types (using community weighted mean, CWM, independent of FD and PD) via selection effects on several EFs. The results showed strong direct effects of different dimensions of plant functional structure parameters on plant‐related EFs, through either CWM or FD, with weak effects of PD. Fertilization had significant effects on one soil microbial activity and indirect effects on the other variables via changes in soil abiotic properties. Dominant plant types and FD showed only indirect effects on soil microbial activity, through litter decomposition and soil abiotic properties, highlighting the importance of cascading effects. Summary: Major dimensions of plant ecological strategies have been widely studied bringing forward the concept of 'economic spectra' of plants. Sexual reproductive traits, 'floral traits', have been largely neglected in this context, despite their strong link to fitness. Here, we aimed at integrating floral traits into the dimensionality of plant form and function so far dominated by vegetative traits.We used principal component analyses and constructed trait networks to assess the correlation structure of leaf, belowground, plant size‐related, and floral traits. We studied forbs within two independent datasets; one compiled from central European trait databases and one sampled in the Austrian Alps.Floral traits defined the second dimension of trait variability within both datasets, while plant size determined the first dimension. Floral traits were largely independent from the leaf economic spectrum. Flower size, however, positively scaled with plant size and leaf size. Mating system was the most well‐connected trait across modules of plant tissue/organ types. The independence of floral traits was consistent also after accounting for phylogenetic relationships between species.Floral traits explained a unique part of the variation in plant form and function and thus, likely play a distinctive ecological role within the whole plant economic spectrum. With the potential extinction of threatened species, communities and species pools could become functionally and phylogenetically impoverished, especially if threatened species had distinct traits and evolutionary histories compared to least concern species. Alternatively, threatened species would have similar traits and evolutionary histories, and their extinction could imply the loss of functionally and phylogenetically 'redundant' species.We tested whether threatened plant species are functionally and phylogenetically rarer than least concern species. We considered two scales of plant assemblage (plots and species pools) from an intensively sampled temperate region (Czech Republic), using a sample of 23,072 vegetation plots classified into eight habitat groups. We analysed the traits and phylogeny of 1,730 species of angiosperms recorded in these plots.We found that the potential loss of threatened species could have minor functional and phylogenetic consequences for the communities in any habitat and at each assemblage scale. However, detailed analysis of individual traits revealed that some threatened species tend to have some unique trait value, such as being small and having lighter seeds.Phylogenetically unique species tended to be the most functionally rare, although this pattern was only weakly significant. This generally suggests similar conservation strategies for functionally rare and evolutionarily unique species.Policy implications. We show how novel tools related to functional rarity and phylogenetic uniqueness could be used to understand the role of threatened species in communities and different habitat types. This allows to understand which species and habitats could provide great functional and phylogenetic contributions to biodiversity to better guide management and conservation programmes. To fully achieve this potential, greater efforts in collecting functional trait information for threatened species remain urgent as well as considering both individual and combined trait information when estimating the functional originality of species. Objective: To evaluate the quality information on testicular cancer uploaded on YouTube™ videos. Methods: YouTube™ videos were searched using "Testicular cancer" as a keyword. The Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool, the Misinformation scale, and the DISCERN tool were used to assess the quality information of YouTube™ videos on testicular cancer. Results: According to the selection criteria, 121 YouTube™ videos were collected for the analysis and stratified according to uploading year (2009–2014 vs 2015–2020). According to the Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool for audio‐visual content, the overall Understandability score was 60% (interquartile range 45.5–75) and the overall Actionability score was 100% (interquartile range 66.7–100). According to the Misinformation scale, the lowest median was recorded for item 6 ("Effects on fertility") and the overall median Misinformation score was 2 (interquartile range 1.3–2.8). No statistically significant differences were observed according to uploading year (all P > 0.05). Of all, only 54 (44.6%) videos mentioning treatment were subsequently analyzed. Of these videos, the overall Understandability was 71.4% (interquartile range 56.3–84.6) and the overall Actionability was 100% (interquartile range 66.7–100). The overall Misinformation score was 2.8 (interquartile range 2.2–3.5). The median DISCERN score recorded for question 16 was 5 (interquartile range 3–5). Conclusions: YouTube™ is a fast and open‐access source for mass information. The overall quality of the testicular cancer contents provided is sadly unsatisfactory, in the present likewise in the past. However, YouTube™ videos mentioning treatment options showed higher quality content, than the remaining one. Nevertheless, all the videos analyzed underestimated the testicular cancer effects on fertility. Nowadays, YouTube™ cannot be recommended as a reliable source of information on testicular cancer. Analysing temporal patterns in plant communities is extremely important to quantify the extent and the consequences of ecological changes, especially considering the current biodiversity crisis. Long‐term data collected through the regular sampling of permanent plots represent the most accurate resource to study ecological succession, analyse the stability of a community over time and understand the mechanisms driving vegetation change. We hereby present the LOng‐Term Vegetation Sampling (LOTVS) initiative, a global collection of vegetation time‐series derived from the regular monitoring of plant species in permanent plots. With 79 data sets from five continents and 7,789 vegetation time‐series monitored for at least 6 years and mostly on an annual basis, LOTVS possibly represents the largest collection of temporally fine‐grained vegetation time‐series derived from permanent plots and made accessible to the research community. Phenotypic plasticity is essential for organisms to adapt to local ecological conditions. It is expected that mutualistic interactions, such as arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis, mediate plant phenotypic plasticity, although it is not clear to what extent this plasticity may be heritable (i.e. transgenerational plasticity).We tested for plant plasticity within‐ and across‐generations in response to AM symbiosis and varying water availability in a full factorial experiment over two generations, using a genetically uniform line of a perennial apomictic herb, Taraxacum brevicorniculatum. We examined changes in phenotype, performance and AM fungal colonization of the offspring throughout plant development.AM symbiosis and water availability triggered phenotypic changes during the life cycle of plants. Additionally, both factors triggered adaptive transgenerational effects especially detectable during the juvenile stage of the offspring. Water deficit and absence of AM fungi caused concordant plant phenotypic modifications towards a 'stress‐coping phenotype', both within and across generations. Parental environment also affected AM fungal colonization of the offspring. Juvenile offspring of amply watered parents and adut offspring of mycorrhizal parents had increasing length of root colonized by AM fungi when they were under water stress.Synthesis. We show that, in addition to providing beneficial transgenerational effects in offspring traits proxies of fitness (such as increased biomass, survival or nutritional status), AM symbiosis can trigger transgenerational plasticity in anatomical and physiological traits related to resource‐use acquisition, and further influence offspring AM fungal colonization. Aims: The fairy circles along the Namib Desert in southern Africa are round grassland gaps that have puzzled scientists for about 50 years. With the discovery of fairy circles in Australia in 2016, the debate on the origin of the circles has been extended to a new continent. Research interest on the topic has since then risen strongly but so has the use of the term "fairy circle". This term has become more imprecise and, by analogy, has been applied to circular vegetation gaps or plant rings that are largely unrelated to fairy circles. For this reason, we define the concept of fairy circles by identifying their three main characteristics based on in situ field observations and soil excavations to larger‐scale spatial patterns, and regional‐scale distribution. Results: Following this approach, fairy circles are defined by: (a) being "empty gaps" in grassland without a central insect‐nest structure; (b) their ability to form spatially periodic patterns, which are regular hexagonal patterns with an extraordinary degree of spatial ordering; and (c) their strongly regional distribution confined within a narrow arid climatic envelope. In these combined traits, fairy circles differ from other common vegetation gaps which, for example, always have a central insect‐nest structure and may occur across broad climatic gradients on continents. Also plant rings have their own specific characteristics that largely differ from the combined attributes of genuine fairy circles. Conclusions: There are many other vegetation‐gap patterns in arid lands but if such gaps cannot jointly show the three characteristics defining the fairy circles, they should be carefully discussed on their own, rather than mixing them up with fairy circles. Trait based ecology has developed fast in the last decades, aiming to both explain mechanisms of community assembly, and predict patterns in nature, such as the effects of biodiversity shifts on key ecosystem processes. This body of work has stimulated the development of several conceptual frameworks and analytical methods, as well as the production of trait databases covering a growing number of taxa and organizational levels (from individuals to guilds). However, this breeding ground of novel concepts and tools currently lacks a general and coherent framework, under which functional traits can help ecologists organize their research aims, and serve as the common currency to unify several scientific disciplines. Specifically, we see a need to bridge the gaps between community ecology, ecosystem ecology, and evolutionary biology, in order to address the most pressing environmental issues of our time. To achieve this integration goal, we define a trait‐integration continuum, which reconciles alternative trait definitions and approaches in ecology. This continuum outlines a coherent progression of biological scales, along which traits interact and hierarchically integrate from genetic information, to whole organism fitness‐related traits, to trait syndromes and functional groups. Our conceptual scheme proposes that lower‐level trait integration is closer to the inference of ecoevolutionary mechanisms determining population and community properties, whereas higher‐level trait integration is most suited to the prediction of ecosystem processes. Within these two extremes, trait integration varies on a continuous scale, which relates directly to the inductive‐deductive loop that should characterize the scientific method. With our proposed framework, we aim to facilitate scientists in contextualising their research based on the trait‐integration levels that matter most to their specific goals. Explicitly acknowledging the existence of a trait‐integration continuum is a promising way for framing the appropriate questions, thus obtaining reliable answers and results that are comparable across studies and disciplines. Objective Methods Results Conclusion To conduct a population‐based study examining cancer‐specific mortality (CSM) and other‐cause mortality (OCM) differences in patients with radiation‐induced secondary bladder cancer (RT‐BCa) vs those with primary bladder cancer (pBCa) undergoing radical cystectomy (RC).Within the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database (2004–2020), we identified patients with T2–4N0–3M0 bladder cancer treated with RC, who had previously been treated with external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) or brachytherapy for prostate cancer, as well as patients with T2–4N0–3M0 pBCa treated with RC. Cumulative incidence plots and multivariable competing risks regression (CRR) models were used to assess CSM after additional adjustment for OCM. The same methodology was then repeated based on organ‐confined (OC: T2N0M0) and non‐organ‐confined (NOC: T3–4 and/or N1–3) disease.Of 9957 RC patients, RT‐BCa was identified in 347 (3%) compared with 9610 (97%) who had pBCa. In multivariable CRR models, no CSM differences were recorded in the overall comparison (P = 0.8), nor in sub‐groups based on OC and NOC disease (P = 0.8 and 0.7, respectively). Conversely, multivariable CRR models identified RT‐BCa as an independent predictor of 1.3‐fold higher OCM in the overall cohort and of 1.5‐fold higher OCM in those with NOC disease. In a sensitivity analysis of patients with NOC disease, EBRT was associated with higher OCM rates (hazard ratio 1.5). By contrast, OCM rates were not different in those with OC disease (P = 0.8).Our study showed that RC for RT‐BCa was associated with similar CSM rates as RC for pBCa, regardless of disease stage. Plant trait‐based ecology is a powerful extension of the attempt of community ecologists to unveil assembly mechanisms. However, the two main expected determinants of community assembly, niche and neutral processes, can be confused under this framework. Here, we propose to move from trait‐based to phenotype‐based community ecology, accounting for the variation between individuals (phenotypes affected by the abiotic and biotic environment, and vice versa), and explicitly considering their ability to compete with or facilitate its neighbours. This would shift our focus from species' niche responses to niche specialization of phenotypes, reducing the space for neutrality at the finest scales. The current assembly framework, based mainly on niche complementarity and using species‐average functional traits, has been developed exploring mega‐diverse communities, but it fails at describing poor plant communities. Under this framework, monospecificity would be interpreted as an arena where functionally similar individuals compete, consequently leading to regular patterns, which are rarely found in nature. Our niche specialization framework could help explaining coexistence in rich plant communities, where the higher fraction of functional variation is found between species, whereas the intraspecific trait variation dominates in poor species and monospecific communities. We propose a guide to conduct massive phenotyping at the community scale based on the use of visible and near‐infrared spectroscopy. Aims: The link between spectral diversity and in‐situ plant biodiversity is one promising approach to using remote sensing for biodiversity assessment. Nevertheless, there is little evidence as to whether this link is maintained at fine scales, as well as to how it is influenced by vegetation's vertical complexity. Here we test, at the community level in grasslands, the link between diversity of the spectral signal (SDiv) and taxonomic diversity (TDiv), and the influence of vertical complexity. Methods: We used 196 1.5 m × 1.5 m experimental communities with different biodiversity levels. To measure vertical complexity, we quantified height diversity (HDiv) of the most abundant species in the community. TDiv was calculated using the Shannon index based on species cover. Canopy spectral information was gathered using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) mounted with a multi‐spectral sensor providing spectral information via six 10‐nm bands covering the visible and near‐infrared region at a spatial resolution of 3 cm. We measured SDiv in a core area of 1 m ×1 m within the communities as mean Euclidean distance of all pixels in a feature space spanned between the two first components of a PCA calculated for the complete raster stack. We modelled SDiv through mixed‐effect linear models, using TDiv, HDiv, and their interaction as fixed‐effect predictors. Results: Contrary to our expectations, TDiv was negatively linked to SDiv. The diversity in plant height was positively related to SDiv. More importantly, diversity in plant height and TDiv had a significant negative interaction, meaning the more complex the vegetation was in terms of height, the more the SDiv–TDiv relationship became negative. Conclusions: Our results suggest that in order to exploit the SDiv–TDiv link for monitoring purposes, it needs to be contextualized. Moreover, the results highlight that communities' functional characteristics (i.e. plant height) mediate such a link, calling for new insights into the relation between SDiv and functional diversity. Increased drought is predicted to have a major impact on plant performance under environmental change. Yet leaf hydraulic traits directly related to drought tolerance, such as leaf turgor loss point (πtlp), are under‐represented in trait‐based studies and have been largely overlooked within the main frameworks evaluating trait–trait coordination and trade‐offs—the leaf economics spectrum (LES) and the global spectrum of plant form and function.Using 122 herbaceous species from the Central European temperate grasslands, we investigated (a) the coordination between πtlp and traits often used as proxies for drought tolerance, namely SLA, leaf area (LA), leaf dry matter content (LDMC), leaf thickness (LT), plant height and intrinsic water use efficiency (iWUE); (b) whether the strength of the trait–trait relationships differed across plant functional types (PFTs: graminoids and forbs) and depended on species phylogeny; and (c) whether single or multiple traits, combined with either PFTs or phylogenetic relatedness, provide a good prediction of πtlp.A more negative πtlp (higher leaf drought tolerance) was coordinated with higher LDMC and higher iWUE. This pattern was consistent among PFTs and also after accounting for phylogenetic relatedness. However, the coordination of πtlp with other traits was weak. For LT and height, it was driven by the differences between PFTs. For SLA and LA, it was only observed after accounting for phylogenetic relatedness.The most parsimonious model predicting πtlp as a function of other traits retained LDMC and LA (adj. R2 = 0.37). Since πtlp showed a strong phylogenetic signal, accounting for the influence of phylogenetic relatedness further improved πtlp prediction by 17%.In herbaceous temperate plants, there is relatively weak coordination between leaf drought tolerance (πtlp) and traits representing key dimensions of the LES and the global spectrum of plant form and function. None of the proxy traits considered here, alone or in combination, provided a strong prediction of πtlp across a large number of grassland plant species. Therefore, our work emphasizes the need for direct measurements of leaf hydraulics when estimating plant drought responses to better understand and predict species responses to environmental change. Summary: Phenotypic plasticity, within and across generations (transgenerational plasticity), allows organisms and their progeny to adapt to the environment without modification of the underlying DNA. Recent findings suggest that epigenetic modifications are important mediators of such plasticity. However, empirical studies have, so far, mainly focused on plasticity in response to abiotic factors, overlooking the response to competition.We tested for within‐generation and transgenerational phenotypic plasticity triggered by plant–plant competition intensity, and we tested whether it was mediated via DNA methylation, using the perennial, apomictic herb Taraxacum brevicorniculatum in four coordinated experiments. We then tested the consequences of transgenerational plasticity affecting competitive interactions of the offspring and ecosystem processes, such as decomposition.We found that, by promoting differences in DNA methylation, offspring of plants under stronger competition developed faster and presented more resource‐conservative phenotypes. Further, these adjustments associated with less degradable leaves, which have the potential to reduce nutrient turnover and might, in turn, favour plants with more conservative traits.Greater parental competition enhanced competitive abilities of the offspring, by triggering adaptive phenotypic plasticity, and decreased offspring leaf decomposability. Aims: Ecological theories predict that assembly processes shape communities so that co-existing species may either be functionally more dissimilar ("divergence") or more similar ("convergence") than expected by chance. Two important factors that are rarely considered in combination are spatial scale and successional stage. Our aim is to identify different functional patterns during succession across spatial scales and to discuss the likely underlying assembly processes. We expect to find convergence due to environmental filtering at early succession, especially at the largest scales, and a tendency towards divergence driven by competitive interactions as succession unfolds and at smaller spatial scales. Location: Protected Landscape Area “Bohemian Karst”, Czech Republic. Methods: We studied three succession stages (two, eight and 55 years after abandonment). Each field was sampled using 40 1-m² quadrats containing 100 pins in a regular grid. We analysed trait dispersion at several combinations of grain and extent and characterised trait similarity using phylogeny and four traits: specific leaf area, leaf dry matter content, height, and seed mass analysed individually and combined using Gower distance (multi-trait dissimilarity). Results: In the youngest field, three of the traits individually and the multi-trait dissimilarity showed convergence regardless of scale. Phylogeny showed convergence at most spatial scales of the youngest stage. The other two fields showed greater divergence predominantly in the oldest field at the smallest spatial scale. Conclusions: The results are mainly congruent with theoretical expectations and provide a valuable example of directional changes from trait convergence to divergence along succession. The scale-invariant convergence in the early stages of succession seems to be the result of environmental filtering and weaker competitive exclusion. At later stages and particularly at smaller scales, divergence becomes more common, likely because competition limits the trait similarity of species. Functional trait differences between species are key drivers of community assembly and ecosystem functioning. Quantifying these differences routinely requires using approaches like the Gower distance to combine various types of traits into a multi‐trait dissimilarity.Without special care, the Gower distance can however produce a multi‐trait dissimilarity with a disproportional contribution of certain traits, particularly categorical traits and bundle of correlated traits reflecting similar ecological functions. These effects persist even after applying multivariate analyses traditionally used to reduce trait dimensionality.We propose the 'gawdis' R function, and corresponding package, to produce multi‐trait dissimilarity with more uniform contributions of different traits, including fuzzy coded ones. The approach is based on minimizing the differences in the correlation between the dissimilarity of each trait, or groups of traits, and the multi‐trait dissimilarity. This is done using either an analytical or a numerical solution, both available in the function.Properly taking into account the contribution of multiple traits into multi‐trait dissimilarity is key for interpreting the ecological effects of complex species differences. Summary: Dispersal limitation is cited as the driver of biogeography in archipelagic southeast Asia. Could environmental filtering play an equally important role? From west to east across the archipelago there are three bioregions: Sunda, Wallacea and Sahul. Historic spatial separation of Sunda and Sahul is thought to limit species exchange. Here, I hypothesise that the Wallacean environment may be too stressful for many lineages originating from Sunda and Sahul — limiting dispersal between these two regions. I highlight that Wallacea has: (a) proportionally less lowland habitat; (b) more phytotoxic, heavy metal‐rich ultramafic soils; (c) sea currents flowing toward drought‐prone seasonal areas; and (d) forests that may be shorter with a different biotic environment. Preliminary results show that genera previously identified as originating from Sunda (using fossil and phylogenetic data) are shorter in stature (an indicator of stress tolerance), are more likely to be found in the smaller lowland areas and seasonal habitat of Wallacea and occupy islands further east. Shorter genera originating from Sahul are more likely to occupy ultramafic‐rich areas of Wallacea and to be found further west. Questions: Theory suggests that while plant diversity of grasslands decreases in response to increased competition for light, many plant species persist below‐ground even in the temporary absence of shoots. Thus, we hypothesized that below‐ground, diversity is less affected by increased competition during land‐use change compared to above‐ground. Location: Species‐rich, oligotrophic grasslands in the Železné hory Mts, eastern Bohemia, Czech Republic. Methods: We quantified above‐ and below‐ground plant richness (roots and rhizomes, seed and bud bank) in grasslands subjected to seven years of experimental abandonment and fertilization. We used conventional species identification to measure richness above‐ground and 454 sequencing of the chloroplast trnL (UAA) gene to measure richness of roots and rhizomes; additionally, we used the shoot emergence method to measure soil seed and bud bank richness. Results: While above‐ground richness decreased with abandonment and fertilization, below‐ground richness remained less affected or even increased compared to the control (traditional mowing). Overall, compared to above‐ground the proportion of plant species found only below‐ground as roots and rhizomes increased, particularly in the abandonment with fertilization treatment. Conclusions: Below‐ground plant diversity could potentially buffer against biodiversity losses during short‐term land‐use change. Our findings highlight that measuring the complete plant species diversity improves our understanding of processes that underlie plant diversity and coexistence and refine predictions of vegetation responses to biodiversity threats. Forest ecosystems provide countless ecosystem services potentially mitigating the ongoing climate change; those services, however, suffer not only from the change of climate but also from a rising human pressure. Understanding of forest ecosystem complexity and consistent monitoring of ongoing changes can be a key to climate change mitigation. Remote sensing can capture data at various scales and times and can complement and enhance traditional forest field surveys. Low‐altitude aerial surveys conducted with unmanned aerial systems (UAS) may bridge the gap between remote imaging and field surveys, especially at local scales. The current professional UAS sensors offer astounding detail and accuracy but are associated with high costs. For everyday forest practice, information on forest structure and health status is needed. Such information can, however, also be captured by consumer‐grade UAS and casual cameras at reasonable costs with sufficient accuracy, which makes the high costs associated with better detail unjustifiable for the common forest practice. Deviations from perfect synchrony between species (asynchrony) have therefore been advocated as an important mechanism underlying biodiversity effects on stability. However, it is unclear to what extent existing measures of synchrony actually capture the signal of year‐to‐year species fluctuations in the presence of long‐term directional trends in both species abundance and composition (species directional trends hereafter). Such directional trends may lead to a misinterpretation of indices commonly used to reflect year‐to‐year synchrony. Methods: An approach based on three‐term local quadrat variance (T3) which assesses population variability in a three‐year moving window, was used to overcome species directional trend effects. This "detrending" approach was applied to common indices of synchrony across a worldwide collection of 77 temporal plant community datasets comprising almost 7,800 individual plots sampled for at least six years. Plots included were either maintained under constant "control" conditions over time or were subjected to different management or disturbance treatments. Results: Accounting for directional trends increased the detection of year‐to‐year synchronous patterns in all synchrony indices considered. Specifically, synchrony values increased significantly in ~40% of the datasets with the T3 detrending approach while in ~10% synchrony decreased. For the 38 studies with both control and manipulated conditions, the increase in synchrony values was stronger for longer time series, particularly following experimental manipulation. Conclusions: Species' long‐term directional trends can affect synchrony and stability measures potentially masking the ecological mechanism causing year‐to‐year fluctuations. As such, previous studies on community stability might have overemphasised the role of compensatory dynamics in real‐world ecosystems, and particularly in manipulative conditions, when not considering the possible overriding effects of long‐term directional trends. Questions: How consistent are assembly rules for grassland communities from different regions in response to management? We compared vegetation response using long‐term experiments in subtropical South Africa with published temperate Park Grass (UK) and Konza Prairie (USA) results. Location: Ukulinga, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. Methods: Long‐term experiments in the South African site included a fertilizer experiment (VFE) that was compared with Park Grass and a burning and mowing experiment (BME) that was compared with Konza Prairie. Results: We found consistent vegetation patterns of this subtropical grassland and the temperate grasslands at Park Grass and Konza Prairie. In the comparison of the burning and mowing experiments, species richness in the BME at Ukulinga declined across mowing treatments but did not change between control and intermediate burns as found at Konza Prairie. There was dominance by a few species in the subtropical grassland and the two temperate grasslands under high productivity and frequent burns. Annual burns resulted in lower species richness at both subtropical Ukulinga and temperate Konza Prairie. At both temperate Park Grass and Ukulinga, few species dominated in highly fertilized plots, both sites showed a negative effect of nitrogen amount, and there was a positive effect of lime on species richness. Conclusions: Consistent results from long‐term series of subtropical and temperate grasslands suggest that there are similar community assembly rules regardless of different climatic conditions and different species pools. A possible underlying mechanism for community assembly at Ukulinga and Konza Prairie for both fertilization, burning and mowing may be shade tolerance. At Ukulinga and Park Grass, changes in species richness (negative effects of increasing nitrogen amount and positive effects of lime) were remarkably similar. Aims: The dynamics of plant communities varies across temporal scales. A correct understanding of temporal patterns is crucial for the interpretation of monitoring outputs. Focusing on the understorey community of an ancient coppice at three temporal scales, our aims were to: (a) assess the link between year‐to‐year variations and a decadal successional change; (b) estimate how seasonal cyclical dynamics could interfere with the changes at interannual and decadal scales; and (c) account for the effects of coppicing restoration. Location: Mt Děvín, S Moravia, Czech Republic. Methods: Composition of a temperate forest understorey was monitored in 26 permanent plots on a year‐to‐year basis for a decade (2008–2018) and monthly (2015–2016). Adjacent semi‐permanent plots (23 in total) were resurveyed in 1953–2003. The three scales of temporal variation were statistically analyzed and compared looking at the vascular plant diversity (species richness) and compositional turnover (dissimilarity measures and patterns in multivariate space). Results: Each of the three temporal scales captures specific patterns in herbaceous understorey species richness and turnover. The interannual variation shows fluctuations rather than trends and is lower than the magnitude of changes on a decadal scale. However, canopy thinning was responsible for rapid changes compatible with the long‐term trend of biodiversity decline following the abandonment of coppicing decades ago. The seasonal dynamics showed a distinct cyclical development typical of temperate forests. It exceeded the magnitude of interannual changes, pointing at the potentially significant source of error from the timing of data collection. Conclusions: Comparison of the monitoring and legacy data revealed complex patterns in the forest understorey dynamics. Contrary to general assumptions, the short‐term dynamics of forest understorey can be significant. It is recommended that monitoring designs consider not only permanent plots but also resurveys of semi‐permanent plots. Aim: The outcome of interaction between plant individuals is often expected to be determined by differences in their sizes with other traits playing minor roles. However, such findings typically come from manipulative experiments in experimental gardens. Consequently, little is known about the relative roles of size vs other traits in the field, particularly in communities other than forests. Here we aimed; (a) to determine the relative role of size‐related traits in pairwise interactions between common species in a species‐rich grassland community; and (b) to determine which other traits predict outcomes of such interactions in the field, and which traits predict mean competitive effects and responses of individual species. Location: The Krkonoše Mts., Czech Republic. Methods: We fitted dynamic models with explicit terms for pairwise interactions on a 31‐year long data series of spatially explicit ramet counts of 19 coexisting species in a mountain meadow. We compared these fits with those having total neighbour biomass as the only competition term to determine whether accounting for pairwise interactions increases model fit. Further we linked estimates of the parameters of pairwise interactions with species traits, including size‐related traits. Results: Comparison of models with and without pairwise predictors showed that pairwise interactions provided better fits only in less than half of the cases. The main determinant of competitive interactions was leaf area and, to a lesser extent, mean ramet biomass; there was an additional signal of difference in rooting depth. Conclusion: Plant size and overall biomass have overwhelming effects on species‐to‐species interactions even in unproductive grassland communities, despite low differentiation of plant species along the size axis there. However, the weak albeit detectable signal of predictors not related to size of pairwise interactions points to possible mechanisms of within‐community niche differentiation, which can be captured by inter‐specific difference in functional traits and tested experimentally. Aims: Floral traits are frequently studied in population biology and evolutionary ecology but are rarely considered in functional trait‐based studies focusing on the assembly of communities. We address this gap in trait‐based community assembly by synthesizing the existing literature on processes driving floral and pollination‐related trait patterns at community scales. We highlight limitations of the field due to lack of data and suggest potential directions of future research. Methods: We conducted a systematic literature search collating studies that investigated floral traits in the context of plant community assembly, which allowed us to synthesize the current state of the art and point out important gaps in our knowledge. Conclusions: The literature review shows that including pollination‐related traits in community assembly studies can shed new light on species coexistence patterns not accounted for by other types of traits. The synthesis presented here shows the diversity of approaches and existing techniques which can generate a step forward in this open field of research. What currently seems to hinder comprehensive analyses of floral traits at community levels is the lack of data, particularly in existing large repositories for traits worldwide, as well as a gap in linking modern coexistence theory with floral traits. Plant invasions cause biodiversity loss and degradation in ecosystems worldwide. The invasive species involved may be introduced, or native invaders, and controlling them is a major global challenge. Here, we highlight an emerging role for native parasitic plants in suppressing invasive species, thus aiding in restoration of affected habitats. Compelling empirical evidence is provided by three study systems located in Central Europe, southern Australia and eastern China. Further cases of parasitism of invasive plants have been recorded across five continents. We propose including the interactions between parasitic and invasive plants into the theoretical framework of the biotic resistance hypothesis concerning generalist interactions between invaders and native biota. Among parasitic plants, numerous root hemiparasites, mistletoes and parasitic vines show low host specificity and exert substantial negative effects on their hosts. These parasitic plants may interfere with key traits of invaders such as symbiotic nitrogen fixation or clonal propagation which provide them with competitive advantage over native species. We contend that some parasitic plants may present a cost‐effective environmentally sustainable component of invasion management schemes. Therefore, we encourage exploration of this potential and the development of methods for practical applications in ecological restoration and nature conservation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Traditional approaches in trait‐based community ecology typically expect that trait filtering across broad environmental gradients is largely due to replacement of species, rather than intraspecific trait adjustments. Recently, the role of intraspecific trait variability has been largely highlighted as an important contributor mediating the ability of communities to persist under changing conditions and determining the community‐level trait variation, particularly across limited environmental gradients. Unfortunately, few studies quantify the relative importance of species turnover versus intraspecific variability mediating the response of communities different from vascular plants. Here, we studied the functional changes in epiphytic lichen communities within 23 beech forests across large latitudinal (ca. 3,000 km) and environmental gradients in Europe to quantify the relative contribution of species turnover and intraspecific variability and the role of climate controlling community‐level trait changes. For 58 lichen species, we focused on a set of 10 quantitative functional traits potentially affected by climatic conditions and related to photosynthetic performance (n = 1,184 thalli), water use strategy (n = 1,018 thalli), and nutrient uptake (n = 1,179 thalli). Our results showed that intraspecific trait variability explained most of the functional changes in lichen communities in response to the latitudinal gradient. Further, such functional changes were determined by the covariation between intraspecific trait variability and species turnover, which varied in sign depending on the trait considered. Finally, different climatic predictors explained functional variation due to both intraspecific trait variability and species turnover. We propose that lichen communities cope with contrasting climatic conditions by adjusting the functional trait values of the most abundant species within the communities rather than by the replacement of the species. Consequently, intraspecific variability should be explicitly incorporated to understand the effect of environmental changes on lichen communities, even over large environmental variations, better. Our results challenge the universality of the hypothesis that species turnover chiefly drives functional trait changes across large environmental gradients and call for a wider test of such important assumptions in trait ecology in different organism types and ecosystems. Ecologists are increasingly asking large‐scale and/or broad‐scope questions that require vast datasets. In response, various top‐down efforts and incentives have been implemented to encourage data sharing and integration. However, despite general consensus on the critical need for more open ecological data, several roadblocks still discourage compliance and participation in these projects; as a result, ecological data remain largely unavailable. Grassroots initiatives (i.e. efforts initiated and led by cohesive groups of scientists focused on specific goals) have thus far been overlooked as a powerful means to meet these challenges. These bottom‐up collaborative data integration projects can play a crucial role in making high quality datasets available because they tackle the heterogeneity of ecological data at a scale where it is still manageable, all the while offering the support and structure to do so. These initiatives foster best practices in data management and provide tangible rewards to researchers who choose to invest time in sound data stewardship. By maintaining proximity between data generators and data users, grassroots initiatives improve data interpretation and ensure high‐quality data integration while providing fair acknowledgement to data generators. We encourage researchers to formalize existing collaborations and to engage in local activities that improve the availability and distribution of ecological data. By fostering communication and interaction among scientists, we are convinced that grassroots initiatives can significantly support the development of global‐scale data repositories. Ecological network studies are providing important advances about the organization, stability and dynamics of ecological systems. However, the ecological networks approach is being integrated very slowly in plant community ecology, even though the first studies on plant facilitation networks (FNs) were published more than a decade ago. The study of interaction networks between established plants and plants recruiting beneath them, which we call Recruitment Networks (RNs), can provide new insights on mechanisms driving plant community structure and dynamics. RNs basically describe which plants recruit under which others, so they can be seen as a generalisation of the classic FNs since they do not imply any particular effect (positive, negative or neutral) of the established plants on recruiting ones. RNs summarise information on the structure of sapling banks. More importantly, the information included in RNs can be incorporated into models of replacement dynamics to evaluate how different aspects of network structure, or different mechanisms of network assembly, may affect plant community stability and species coexistence. To allow an efficient development of the study of FNs and RNs, here we unify concepts, synthesise current knowledge, clarify some conceptual issues, and propose basic methodological guidelines to standardise sampling methods that could make future studies of these networks directly comparable. What determines the stability of communities under environmental fluctuations remains one of the most debated questions in ecology. Scholars generally agree that the similarity in year‐to‐year fluctuations between species is an important determinant of this stability. Concordant fluctuations in species abundances through time (synchrony) decrease stability while discordance in fluctuations (anti‐synchrony) should stabilize communities. Researchers have interpreted the community‐wide degree of synchrony in temporal fluctuations as the outcome of different processes. However, existing synchrony measures depend not only on year‐to‐year species fluctuations, but also on long‐term directional trends in species composition, for example due to land‐use or climate change. The neglected effect of directional trends in species composition could cause an apparent increase in synchrony that is not due to year‐to‐year fluctuations, as species that simultaneously increase (or decrease) in abundance over time will appear correlated, even if they fluctuate discordantly from year to year. The opposite pattern is also conceivable, where different species show contrasting trends in their abundances, thus overestimating year‐to‐year anti‐synchrony. Therefore, trends in species composition may limit our understanding of potential ecological mechanisms behind synchrony between species. We propose two easily implementable solutions, with corresponding R functions, for testing and accounting for the effect of trends in species composition on overall synchrony. The first approach is based on computing synchrony over the residuals of fitted species trends over time. The second approach, applicable to already existing indices, is based on three‐terms local variance, i.e. computing variance over three‐years‐long, movable windows. We demonstrate these methods using simulations and data from real plant communities under long‐term directional changes, discussing when one approach can be preferred. We show that accounting for long‐term temporal trends is necessary and that separation of effect of trends and year‐to‐year fluctuation provides a better understanding of ecological mechanisms and their connections with ecological theory. Darwin's naturalization conundrum states that successful invaders must be closely related to native species to possess the traits to tolerate that environment, but distantly related enough to possess traits allowing exploitation of underutilized niches, thereby minimizing competition. Although influential, this hypothesis is based on several simplistic assumptions. In particular, the relationship among phylogenetic relatedness, similarity, and competition is more complex than assumed and changes with spatial and phylogenetic scale. Competitive interactions are determined by limiting similarity and trait hierarchies associated with separate traits. Successful invaders thus need to be similar to native species in some respects, but different in others. This combination of similarities and differences is unlikely to be conserved. Further, many invasive species are represented in their novel range by genotypes with extreme trait values or plasticity relative to the species mean. Selection for these genotypes may alter the similarity between invasive and native species, thus obscuring the relationship between competition and phylogenetic relatedness. As environmental filtering and competition often act on different spatial scales, approaches assessing how individual traits relate to invasion at these scales (species pools vs local community) may improve our understanding of the relationship between similarity and invasion. Both intra‐ and interspecific differences in traits may modulate interactions between plants. Two mechanisms are hypothesized to regulate these effects: competitive hierarchies and trait dissimilarities, but it is unclear how the prevalence of each might depend on environmental conditions and on intra and interspecific differences.We sowed six replicates of all possible pairwise combinations across eight annual species (including conspecific competition and individuals without competitors), in pots under two levels of fertilization. We measured above‐ and below‐ground traits and total biomass of the focal individuals. We expressed competition as the decrease in biomass of focal individuals relative to biomass without competition, and modelled competition using directional (hierarchy) or non‐directional (dissimilarity) trait differences, with or without intraspecific variability (ITV).We found evidence of different trait hierarchies operating under different fertilization conditions but little support for trait dissimilarities. The negative effect of competition on focal plants increased with the height of the competitors in both of fertilization levels. Further, in unfertilized conditions, plants with lower specific leaf area (SLA) and larger root systems experienced less competition. Including ITV in trait hierarchies substantially improved our ability to predict the intensity of competition. This was partly due to ITV reducing competitive hierarchies.Synthesis. Our results underscore the importance of traits in driving interactions among plants. Competitive relationships between species depend on complex interactions between trait intra and interspecific differences and resource availability. Traditionally, trait‐based studies have explored single‐trait‐fitness relationships. However, this approximation in the study of fitness components is often too simplistic, given that fitness is determined by the interplay of multiple traits, which could even lead to multiple functional strategies with comparable fitness (i.e. alternative designs).Here we suggest that an analytical framework using boosted regression trees (BRT) can prove more informative to test hypotheses on trait combinations compared to standard linear models. We use two published datasets for comparisons: a botanical garden dataset with 557 plant species (Herben, 2012, Journal of Ecology, 100, 1522) and an observational dataset with 83 plant species (Adler, 2014, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 111, 740).Using the observational dataset, we found that BRTs predict the role of traits on the relative importance of survival, growth and reproduction for population growth rate better than linear models do. Moreover, we split species cultivated in different habitats within the botanical garden and observed that seed and vegetative reproduction depended on trait combinations in most habitats. Our analyses suggest that, while not all traits impact fitness components to the same degree, it is crucial to consider traits that represent different ecological dimensions.Synthesis. The analysis of trait combinations, and corresponding alternative designs via BRTs, represent a promising approach for understanding and managing functional changes in vegetation composition through measurement of suites of relatively easily measurable traits.
