Bed bugs, Cimex lectularius L. and C. hemipterus (F.) (Hemiptera: Cimicidae) are hematophagous ectoparasites of humans. Since the resurgence of bed bugs in the late 1990s there has been a corresponding emphasis on development and implementation of integrated pest management (IPM) programs to manage infestations. One critical requirement of IPM is the ability to detect and monitor the target pest. We outline and describe the majority of all known existing devices and technologies developed for bed bug detection and monitoring as well as much of the underlying science. Almost 40 detection and monitoring products have flooded the marketplace, but for various reasons, including price, size, complexity and lack of independent scientific evaluation, they have not been widely adopted for IPM in structures. One product, the ClimbUp® Insect Interceptor, has nine competitors that utilize a similar design. This review also discloses many other technologies and products that are either too expensive or too impractical for use as either consumer or industrial products. We conclude that there is a critical need for inexpensive and effective detection and monitoring traps and lures suitable for widespread adoption by the urban pest control industry. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry. In recent studies, the yeast species Hanseniaspora uvarum and Lachancea thermotolerans were isolated from the digestive tract of four North American yellowjacket species (Hymenoptera: Vespidae), and attraction of yellowjackets to brewer's yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae (all Saccharomycetaceae), growing on fruit powder was demonstrated. We tested the hypothesis that Vespula spp. are attracted to cultures of H. uvarum and L. thermotolerans and their respective volatiles. In field experiments, we found that H. uvarum and L. thermotolerans are attractive to three species of yellowjacket, but only when grown on grape juice‐infused yeast peptone dextrose (YPD) agar. Using gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry, we analyzed the headspace volatiles produced by these yeasts, and field tested an 18‐component yeast synthetic semiochemical blend. This synthetic blend attracted western yellowjackets, Vespula pensylvanica (Saussure), but no other yellowjacket species. Acetic acid or ethanol added to the synthetic blend at biologically relevant doses either had no effect or significantly lowered trap captures. Our results demonstrate that yeast symbionts isolated from the digestive tract of yellowjackets are attractive to their hosts. Further research is needed to identify the volatiles mediating attraction of species other than V. pensylvanica to the yeast cultures. Host selection by herbivorous insects is primarily thought to depend on attraction to olfactory cues emitted from the host species. However, the discrimination of these hosts from non-host species may also arise from the adaptive detection and avoidance of non-host cues, including visual characteristics. Many generalist, conifer-colonising beetles, for example, use characteristic volatiles to identify and discriminate against non-host angiosperm trees such as aspens and birches while flying. These trees also differ in bark reflectance characteristics, which could also mediate host/non-host discrimination by interacting with semiochemicals. We tested this hypothesis by evaluating the responses of eight species of polyphagous woodboring beetles to traps which simulated the visual appearance of coniferous hosts (black) and angiosperm non-hosts (white), and which were baited with host or non-host volatiles. As predicted, three species of large woodboring beetle and a woodboring wasp all avoided white, non-host-simulating traps that were baited with attractive kairomones, and preferred black, host-simulating traps. Conversely, three ambrosia beetle species demonstrated weaker visual preferences, possibly because they preferentially colonise fallen hosts that would transmit less accurate visual information. However, the ambrosia beetle Trypodendron lineatum did show a greater preference for host-coloured traps when these released host-associated kairomones in addition to their pheromone, and also avoided white non-host traps, but only when these released non-host volatiles. To our knowledge, this is the first evidence that multiple non-host cues could synergistically mediate the adaptive discrimination of hosts and non-hosts. Our results suggest that successful host location by generalists arises from the complex integration of cues in multiple sensory modes, and that foraging herbivores evaluate both hosts and non-hosts during their search. 1. There has been a long-standing pre-occupation with how phytophagous insects use olfactory cues to discriminate hosts from non-hosts. Foragers, however, should use whatever cues are accurate and easily assessed, including visual cues. 2. It was hypothesised that three bark beetles, the mountain pine beetle (MPB), Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins, the Douglas-fir beetle (DFB), D. pseudotsugae Hopkins, and the western balsam bark beetle (WBBB), Dryocoetes confusus Swaine, integrate visual and olfactory information to avoid non-host angiosperms (e.g. paper birch, trembling aspen), that differ in visual and semiochemical profile from their respective host conifers (lodgepole pine, Douglas-fir, interior fir), and tested this hypothesis in a series of field trapping experiments. 3. All three species avoided attractant-baited, white (non-host simulating) multiple-funnel traps, and preferred attractant-baited black (host-simulating) traps. In experiments combining white, non-host traps with non-host angiosperm volatiles, bark beetles were repelled by these stimuli in an additive or redundant manner, confirming that these species could integrate visual and olfactory information to avoid non-host angiosperms while flying. 4. When antiaggregation pheromones were released from white traps, the DFB and MPB were repelled in an additive-redundant manner, suggesting that beetles can integrate diverse and potentially anomalous stimuli. 5. The MPB demonstrated the most consistent visual preferences, suggesting that it may be more of a ‘visual specialist’ than the DFB or WBBB, for which visual responses may be more contingent on olfactory inputs. A long-standing controversy questions whether foraging bark beetles assess the suitability of individual host trees using cues at close range while flying or engage in random landing followed by contact assessment. In most cases, visual discrimination mechanisms are ignored. We show that pheromone-responding mountain pine beetles (MPB), Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins (Coleoptera: Scolytidae), can visually discriminate between ‘host’ (black) and ‘non-host’ (white) traps arranged in small clusters, in the absence of additional host olfactory information, and that males (but not females) demonstrate a greater preference for combined host visual and olfactory cues. However, white, non-host traps baited with a host volatile were as attractive as unbaited, black host traps. Our results support the hypotheses that when deciding to land, the MPBs integrate visual and olfactory information and can process cues in both sensory modes at relatively close range (≤2 m). 1 Synthetic blends of bole and foliage volatiles of four sympatric species of conifers were released from pheromone-baited multiple-funnel traps to determine if three species of tree-killing bark beetles (Coleoptera: Scolytidae): (i) exhibited primary attraction to volatiles of their hosts and (ii) discriminated among volatiles of four sympatric species of host and nonhost conifers. 2 Bole and foliage volatiles from Douglas-fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco, increased the attraction of coastal and interior Douglas-fir beetles, Dendroctonus pseudotsugae Hopkins, to pheromone-baited traps. Primary attraction to bole volatiles was observed in interior D. pseudotsugae. Beetles were significantly less attracted to the pheromone bait when it was combined with volatiles of lodgepole pine, Pinus contorta var. latifolia Engelm. or interior fir, Abies lasiocarpa × bifolia. 3 The monoterpene myrcene synergized attraction of mountain pine beetles, Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins, to their aggregation pheromones, but there was no evidence of primary attraction to host volatiles or discrimination among volatiles from the four conifers. 4 There was significant primary attraction of the spruce beetle, Dendroctonus rufipennis Kirby, to bole and foliage volatiles of interior spruce, Picea engelmannii × glauca, but beetles did not discriminate among volatiles of four sympatric conifers when they were combined with pheromone baits. 5 Our results indicate that host volatiles act as kairomones to aid pioneer Douglas-fir beetles and spruce beetles in host location by primary attraction, and that their role as synergists to aggregation pheromones is significant. For the mountain pine beetle, we conclude that random landing and close range acceptance or rejection of potential hosts would occur in the absence of aggregation pheromones emanating from a tree under attack. 1 Fecundity, egg hatch and nymphal survivorship ofLeptoglossus occidentalisHeidemann were determined and used to develop a damage prediction formula for seed bugs in lodgepole pine seed orchards.2 A single overwinteredL. occidentalisfemale may lay up to 80 eggs during early and mid-season cone development.3 Up to 83.4% of eggs that were attached to branches with tape hatched successfully, compared with 53.5% of eggs attached to needles with wire. Egg parasitism was only observed in egg masses attached with wire.4 Egg masses attached with wire suffered approximately 30% mortality from parasitism, primarily byGryon pennsylvanicum(Ashmead).5 Approximately 15.1 and 2.5% of first instars survived to adulthood in 2000 and 2001, respectively. Survival of caged nymphs that were protected from predators was 14.5 and 17.8%, respectively.6 A composite survival table indicated that 9.3% of eggs laid byL. occidentalisare expected to survive to adulthood.7 Based on previously determined damage estimates for each life stage of feeding during three periods of cone development, a hypothetical density of one seed bug per tree early in the season will result in an expected seed loss of approximately 310 seeds. Abstract 1 Seventeen non-host angiosperm bark volatiles, seven of which are antennally active to Ips pini (Say), the pine engraver (PE), were tested for their ability to disrupt the response of the PE to pheromone-baited traps. 2 Four green leaf volatiles (GLVs) were tested [1-hexanol (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, hexanal, and (E)-2-hexenal]. None had any disruptive effect singly, as a group or in all possible blends based on functional groups, despite the fact that the two aldehydes were antennally active. These compounds may have, in some instances, actually masked the disruptive effect of other compounds. The PE thus differs in its response from other Scolytidae, including other Ips spp. 3 Eight non-host volatiles that were antennally active to other bark beetles, but not to PEs, had no disruptive effect, validating the use of coupled gas chromatographic-electroantennographic detection analyses to detect compounds with potential behavioural activity. 4 The bicyclic spiroacetal conophthorin, (E)-7-methyl-1,6-dioxaspiro[4.5]decane, was disruptive when tested alone. When blends of two aldehydes [salicylaldehyde and nonanal] plus an alcohol and a phenol [benzyl alcohol and guaiacol] were combined with conophthorin, an enhanced disruptive effect was revealed. No single compound, other than conophthorin, disrupted the pheromone-positive response and no blend that did not contain conophthorin was consistently disruptive to both sexes. Conophthorin seems to be a critical component in the non-host angiosperm message for I. pini during its host selection phase. 5 Combination of the repellent synomones, verbenone and ipsenol, with the five disruptive non-host volatiles may provide a potent treatment to protect trees, logs or stands from attack by the PE. An analysis of semiochemical communication between host trees, bark beetles and commensal or entomophagous insects discloses five principal means by which semiochemicals can influence the population dynamics of bark beetles. These are: mediation of aggregation and mass attack on new hosts, cessation of aggregation and shifting of attack to uninhabited hosts, induction of aggregation by competing species, inhibition of aggregation by competing species, and mediation of host finding by commensal and entomophagous insects. Further analysis suggests major points of natural vulnerability which lead to six fundamental strategies for potential pest management: prevention of production of aggregation pheromones, sabotage of olfactory perception, exploitation of semiochemical-based secondary attraction, exploitation of antiaggregation pheromones, exploitation of repellent allomones, and exploitation of the kairomonal response by entomophagous insects. Investigations of the many possible tactics arising from these strategies have led to three types of operational pest management programs: prevention of pheromone production by excluding bark beetles from their hosts; suppression of bark beetle populations through the utilization of semiochemical-baited traps, trees or logs; and the use of antiaggregation pheromones to protect vulnerable hosts from attack.
