A 10‐year‐old female with a several‐year history of pityriasis lichenoides (PL) presented with a new, asymptomatic, large, and necrotic ulcer of her right upper arm. Skin biopsy was consistent with lymphomatoid papulosis (LyP) Type D, a recently recognized subtype of LyP that is distinguished histologically by marked epidermotropism and a perivascular infiltrate of medium‐sized pleomorphic lymphocytes with a cytotoxic phenotype (CD3+, CD8+). This is only the sixth reported case of LyP Type D in a child, and while the prognosis in children appears favorable, with no reports of progression to lymphoma to date, more experience in children with longer‐term follow‐up is needed. Our case highlights both the challenging clinical diagnosis, since in our patient the longstanding clinical presentation was indistinguishable from PL, as well as histopathologic diagnosis, which required expert opinion and consensus. A 2‐week‐old infant with a large vascular birthmark involving her right face presented with right‐sided facial paralysis. MRI of the brain revealed multiple intracranial hemangiomas, and the hemangioma within the right temporal bone impinged on the facial nerve, which resulted in paralysis. Cranial nerve palsies are a rare neurological manifestation of PHACE syndrome. We report successful treatment of the facial nerve palsy with oral propranolol. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Heart rate variability (HRV) has been shown to be influenced by several factors such as noise, sleep status, light, and emotional arousal; however, little evidence is available concerning autonomic responses to a venipuncture. The purpose of this study was to investigate changes of HRV indexes and heart rate (HR) during and following a venipuncture procedure among healthy individuals. Methods: 33 healthy individuals (22.8 ± 0.56 years, 167 ± 1.56 cm, 69.5 ± 2.61 kg) participated. Testing included 10-minuteHRV analysis prior to the venipuncture, a 1-minute venipuncture procedure followed by a 10-minute analysis of HRV, and a total recording of 21 minutes. The first 5 minutes of the 21-minute recordings were discarded, and the remaining 5 minutes of the resting segment was analyzed (PRE), and the last 5 minutes of the 21-minute recording (POST). The log transformation of the time domain root mean squared of successive differences (lnRMSSD) and the frequency domains of high frequency (lnHF) and low frequency (lnLF) and LF/HF ratio (lnLF/HF) were used to quantify autonomic activity. HR was measured in 1-minute segments at 2minutes prior (PRE), venipuncture (STICK), and post (P1-5). Results: HR significantly increased at STICK (P = 0.002), and fell below resting at P-5 (P < 0.001). lnRMSSD and lnHF increased significantly by POST (P < 0.001, P = 0.005). lnLF/HF ratio significantly decreased at POST (P = 0.047), while no significant changes occurred for lnLF (P = 0.590). Conclusions: HRV and HR are influenced for 10 minutes following the venipuncture procedure. Practitioners and researchers who are interested in collecting blood and measuring HRV need to account for the influence of the venipuncture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Odor Span Task is an incrementing non-matching-to-sample procedure that permits the study of behavior under the control of multiple stimuli. Rats are exposed to a series of odor stimuli and selection of new stimuli is reinforced. Successful performance thus requires remembering which stimuli have previously been presented during a given session. This procedure has been frequently used in neurobiological studies as a rodent model of working memory; however, only a few studies have examined the effects of drugs on performance in this task. The present experiments explored the behavioral pharmacology of a modified version of the Odor Span Task by determining the effects of stimulant drugs methylphenidate and methamphetamine, NMDA antagonist ketamine, and positive GABAA modulator flunitrazepam. All four drugs produced dose-dependent impairment of performances on the Odor Span Task, but for methylphenidate and methamphetamine, these occurred only at doses that had similar effects on performance of a simple odor discrimination. Generally, these disruptions were based on omission of responding at the effective doses. The effects of ketamine and flunitrazepam were more selective in some rats. That is, some rats tested under flunitrazepam and ketamine showed decreases in accuracy on the Odor Span Task at doses that did not affect simple discrimination performance. These selective effects indicate disruption of within-session stimulus control. Overall, these findings support the potential of the Odor Span Task as a baseline for the behavioral pharmacological analysis of remembering. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The search for symmetry in nonhuman subjects has been successful in recent studies in pigeons (e.g., Urcuioli, 2008). The key to these successes has been the use of successive discrimination procedures and combined training on identity, as well as arbitrary, baseline relations. The present study was an effort to extend the findings and theoretical analysis developed by Urcuioli and his colleagues to rats using olfactory rather than visual stimuli. Experiment 1 was a systematic replication of Urcuioli's (2008) demonstration of symmetry in pigeons. Rats were exposed to unreinforced symmetry probes following training with two arbitrary and four identity conditional discriminations. Response rates on symmetry probe trials were low and provided little evidence for emergent symmetry in any of the seven rats tested. In Experiment 2, a separate group of six rats was trained on four identity relations and was then exposed to probe trials with four novel odor stimuli. Response rates were high on identity probe trials, and low on nonmatching probe trials. The similar patterns of responding on baseline and probe trials that were shown by most rats provided a demonstration of generalized identity matching. These findings suggest that the development of stimulus control topographies in rats with olfactory stimuli may differ from those that emerge in pigeons with visual stimuli. Urcuioli's (2008) theory has been highly successful in predicting conditions necessary for stimulus class formation in pigeons, but may not be sufficient to fully understand determinants of emergent behaviors in other nonhuman species. A pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE)–like phenotype develops in a subset of patients with inherited hemoglobinopathies. Although PXE tissue changes are thought to develop in the absence of ABCC6 mutations in patients with beta‐thalassemia, ABCC6 mutations have not been well evaluated among sickle cell disease patients with PXE‐like disease. To our knowledge, we describe the first patient with sickle cell disease, PXE skin findings, and two confirmed pathogenic ABCC6 mutations. This case suggests that ABCC6 testing is warranted for sickle cell disease patients with the PXE‐like phenotype and that the pathogenesis of PXE manifestations in beta‐thalassemia and sickle cell disease may differ.
