Herein, a low RESET current 1T1R mushroom‐cell phase‐change memory (PCM) device that uses fiber‐textured homostructure GeSbTe (GST) grown on highly oriented TiTe2 seed layer is reported. The homostructure device outperformed the industry standard device, that uses doped polycrystalline GST, on most figures of merit. The homostructure devices are also benchmarked against superlattice (SL) PCM devices with 10 periods of 5/5 nm GST/Sb2Te3 grown on the TiTe2 seed layer, and are found to have same low RESET current. It is also observed by transmission electron microscopy that the alternating layers of GST/Sb2Te3 and TiTe2/Sb2Te3 in SL devices are intermixed in the switched region after the devices are cycled with RESET/SET pulses. Additionally, when the SL device is left in the SET state, the intermixed switched region crystallinity is textured and exhibits van der Waals gaps. The SL PCM devices require a precise layered structure that is hard to yield on a full wafer scale. In contrast, fiber‐textured homostructure PCM cells reported here are easily manufacturable, while providing similarly low RESET current and low‐resistance drift, which makes this device suitable for analog artificial intelligence computation. The analog AI core concept is appealing for deep‐learning (DL) because it combines computation and memory functions into a single device. Yet, significant challenges such as noise and weight drift will impact large‐scale analog in‐memory computing. Here, effects of flicker noise and drift on large DL systems are explored using a new flicker‐noise model with memory, which preserves temporal correlations, including a flicker noise figure of merit (FOM) Ar to quantify impacts on system performance. Flicker noise is characterized for Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) based phase‐change memory (PCM) cells with a discovery of read‐noise asymmetry tied to shape asymmetry of mushroom cells. This experimental read polarity dependence is consistent with Pirovano's trap activation and defect annihilation model in an asymmetric GST cell. The impact of flicker noise and resistance drift of analog PCM synaptic devices on deep‐learning hardware is assessed for six large‐scale deep neural networks (DNNs) used for image classification, finding that the inference top‐1 accuracy degraded with the accumulated device flicker noise and drift as ∝Ar×twait, and ∝twait−ν, respectively, where ν is the drift coefficient. Phase‐change memory devices have found applications in in‐memory computing where the physical attributes of these devices are exploited to compute in places without the need to shuttle data between memory and processing units. However, nonidealities such as temporal variations in the electrical resistance have a detrimental impact on the achievable computational precision. To address this, a promising approach is projecting the phase configuration of phase change material onto some stable element within the device. Here, the projection mechanism in a prominent phase‐change memory device architecture, namely mushroom‐type phase‐change memory, is investigated. Using nanoscale projected Ge2Sb2Te5 devices, the key attributes of state‐dependent resistance, drift coefficients, and phase configurations are studied, and using them how these devices fundamentally work is understood. Temporal control of action is key for a broad range of behaviors and is disrupted in human diseases such as Parkinson's disease and schizophrenia. A brain structure that is critical for temporal control is the dorsal striatum. Experience and learning can influence dorsal striatal neuronal activity, but it is unknown how these neurons change with experience in contexts which require precise temporal control of movement. We investigated this question by recording from medium spiny neurons (MSNs) via dorsal striatal microelectrode arrays in mice as they gained experience controlling their actions in time. We leveraged an interval timing task optimized for mice which required them to "switch" response ports after enough time had passed without receiving a reward. We report three main results. First, we found that time‐related ramping activity and response‐related activity increased with task experience. Second, temporal decoding by MSN ensembles improved with experience and was predominantly driven by time‐related ramping activity. Finally, we found that a subset of MSNs had differential modulation on error trials. These findings enhance our understanding of dorsal striatal temporal processing by demonstrating how MSN ensembles can evolve with experience. Our results can be linked to temporal habituation and illuminate striatal flexibility during interval timing, which may be relevant for human disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND: The process of harvesting honey is time consuming and labor intensive. A new system, the Flow Frame, has drastically simplified the harvesting process, enabling honey to be extracted directly from the hive with minimal processing. The sensory profile of honey is influenced, first, by botanical origin and subsequently by processing and storage parameters. A reduction in harvest processing may thus influence the sensory profile of honey harvested from FFs compared to that of honey produced from conventional processing. To test this hypothesis, two monofloral honeys (macadamia and yellow pea) were harvested from FFs, or by conventional honey extraction. Sensory profiling using conventional descriptive analysis was carried out for each floral source with an experienced trained panel. RESULTS: The two monofloral honeys harvested using the FF system had significantly (p < 0.05) higher floral and cleaner aftertaste sensory scores than the honey extracted using commercial (C) methods that involve the use of heat and centrifugation. Improvement of agronomic and seed quality traits in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] occurs in breeding programs as a result of crossing elite soybean genotypes and selection of superior offspring in each cycle. The objective of this study was to evaluate changes in traits over 100 yr of selection in Ontario, Canada, in two soybean breeding programs at the University of Guelph: Guelph Campus (Maturity Group [MG] 0 and I) and Ridgetown Campus (MG II) programs. Fifty‐six Guelph cultivars (released between 1983 and 2016), 46 Ridgetown cultivars (released between 1987 and 2015), and 37 Guelph‐pedigree related historical cultivars (from 1913 to 1985) were grown in field trials over 3 yr (Guelph Campus) and 2 yr (Ridgetown Campus) at two locations per breeding program to measure 13 traits. Yield increased in the Guelph Campus cultivars by 17.1 kg ha−1 yr−1 and by 15.7 kg ha−1 yr−1 in the Ridgetown Campus cultivars, while yield per day of maturity per year of release significantly increased in elite cultivars. Protein in the Ridgetown Campus cultivars increased at 0.76 g kg−1 yr−1, whereas the Guelph Campus cultivars showed no trend. In Ridgetown Campus cultivars 100‐seed weight significantly increased at 0.1 g yr−1. Within the historical cultivars, 100‐seed weight was significantly correlated with both protein (r = 0.50) and oil (r = −0.42). Genotype × trait biplot analyses revealed differential patterns of trait relationships between the elite and historical cultivars. Oil and yield were associated within the Guelph Campus cultivars. The association of 100‐seed weight and protein was only found in the historical cultivars. Yield has increased in both breeding programs while seed traits have been altered over time. Anterior elbow dislocations in the pediatric population represent rare and sometimes difficult injuries to manage. Associated olecranon fractures are even more uncommon with limited literature existing on the topic. We present the case of a six-year-old male with a traumatic transolecranon anterior elbow fracture dislocation in whom closed reduction was prevented by buttonholing of the proximal ulna through the anterior joint capsule. This case of pediatric anterior elbow fracture dislocation provides insight into an uncommon and challenging injury complex. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Treatments of polymer films using either a MHz atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ) or an atmospheric pressure surface micro-discharge (SMD) plasma are investigated. While the typical approach to determine relevant reactive species is to correlate surface effects with gas phase species measurement, this does not capture potential synergistic or other complex effects that may be occurring. Activation energy and directionality of the etching process can characterize what is occurring at the surface for these processes in more detail. The APPJ source shows an apparent activation energy of ~0.18 eV at 8 mm distance and up to ~0.34 eV at 16 mm distance for a temperature range of 20-80 °C tested with thin polymer films. The APPJ source shows directional etching at 8 mm distance with less anisotropy the more distance is increased. The SMD source has an apparent activation energy of ~0.8-0.9 eV at a distance of 3 mm. The SMD also only shows isotropic etching behavior. However the SMD surface chemistry changes significantly to less oxidation with increased temperature while the APPJ source induced modifications remain very similar with temperature change. The lower apparent activation energy of the APPJ-induced etching reactions as compared with low pressure work (0.5 eV) and observation of line-of-sight contribution to etching suggests the involvement of a directional species at closer distances facilitating the etching which falls off with increasing distance. The high activation energy of the SMD suggests that species with less capability for etching is responsible compared to the APPJ and low pressure plasma. The high surface oxidation from low temperature SMD treatments shows that the surface is being oxidized but not sufficiently to reach the desorption step of the etching process. The number of lung transplants performed globally continues to increase year after year. Despite this growing experience, long-term outcomes following lung transplantation continue to fall far short of that described in other solid-organ transplant settings. Chronic lung allograft dysfunction ( CLAD) remains common and is the end result of exposure to a multitude of potentially injurious insults that include alloreactivity and infection among others. Central to any description of the clinical performance of the transplanted lung is an assessment of its physiology by pulmonary function testing. Spirometry and the evaluation of forced expiratory volume in 1 s and forced vital capacity, remain core indices that are measured as part of routine clinical follow-up. Spirometry, while reproducible in detecting lung allograft dysfunction, lacks specificity in differentiating the different complications of lung transplantation such as rejection, infection and bronchiolitis obliterans. However, interpretation of spirometry is central to defining the different 'chronic rejection' phenotypes. It is becoming apparent that the maximal lung function achieved following transplantation, as measured by spirometry, is influenced by a number of donor and recipient factors as well as the type of surgery performed (single vs double vs lobar lung transplant). In this review, we discuss the wide range of variables that need to be considered when interpreting lung function testing in lung transplant recipients. Finally, we review a number of novel measurements of pulmonary function that may in the future serve as better biomarkers to detect and diagnose the cause of the failing lung allograft. The rheology of 10 Australian honeys was investigated at temperatures −15C to 0C by a strain-controlled rheometer. The honeys exhibited Newtonian behavior irrespective of the temperature, and follow the Cox–Merz rule. G″/G′ and ω are quadratically related, and the crossover frequencies for liquid to solid transformation and relaxation times were obtained. The composition of the honeys correlates well (r2 > 0.83) with the viscosity, and with 247 data sets (Australian and Greek honeys), the following equation was obtained: The viscosity of the honeys showed a strong dependence on temperature, and four models were examined to describe this. The models gave good fits (r 2 > 0.95), but better fits were obtained for the WLF model using Tg of the honeys and µg= 1011 Pa.s. The WLF model with its “universal values” poorly predicted the viscosity, and the implications of the measured rheological behaviors of the honeys in their processing and handling are discussed. BSTRACT: The East Lansing-Meridian Water and Sewer Authority studied a sand-gravel esker near the existing water treatment plant to determine its potential as an independent surface water supply. The nearby Red Cedar River was also investigated as a possible source of water for immediate treatment or for recharge of the esker. Although the bedrock aquifer (Grand River and Saginaw Formations) yields water adequate for the next 20 years, potential savings in treatment (hardness, iron) and pumping costs, estimated at $30,000 per year for present demand of 5 MGD, are attractive incentives for a surface water-esker recharge program. Operation savings would also be realized by constructing additional bedrock wells in new areas. The river-esker-recharge and new wellfield alternatives are compared for cost-effectiveness. Land costs make the recharge alternative more expensive. The land is undeveloped suburban property with potential for recreational use in conjunction with water supply. More places of outdoor retreat and aesthetics are needed in the Lansig Metropolitan area. A portion of the land costs would have to be borne by these or other interests for the river recharge scheme to be economically feasible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
