Global mapping of forest height is an extremely important task for estimating habitat quality and modeling biodiversity. Recently, three global canopy height maps have been released, the global forest canopy height map (GFCH), the high‐resolution canopy height model of the Earth (HRCH), and the global map of tree canopy height (GMTCH). Here, we assessed their accuracy and usability for biodiversity modeling. We examined their accuracy by comparing them with the reference canopy height models derived from airborne laser scanning (ALS). Our results show considerable differences between the evaluated maps. The root mean square error ranged between 10 and 18 m for GFCH, 9–11 m for HRCH, and 10–17 m for GMTCH, respectively. GFCH and GMTCH consistently underestimated the height of all canopies regardless of their height, while HRCH tended to overestimate the height of low canopies and underestimate tall canopies. Biodiversity models using predicted global canopy height maps as input data are sufficient for estimating simple relationships between species occurrence and canopy height, but their use leads to a considerable decrease in the discrimination ability of the models and to mischaracterization of species niches where derived indices (e.g., canopy height heterogeneity) are concerned. We showed that canopy height heterogeneity is considerably underestimated in the evaluated global canopy height maps. We urge that for temperate areas rich in ALS data, activities should concentrate on harmonizing ALS canopy height maps rather than relying on modeled global products. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: To determine the relationships between the functional trait composition of forest communities and environmental gradients across scales and biomes and the role of species relative abundances in these relationships. Location: Global. Time period: Recent. Major taxa studied: Trees. Methods: We integrated species abundance records from worldwide forest inventories and associated functional traits (wood density, specific leaf area and seed mass) to obtain a data set of 99,953 to 149,285 plots (depending on the trait) spanning all forested continents. We computed community‐weighted and unweighted means of trait values for each plot and related them to three broad environmental gradients and their interactions (energy availability, precipitation and soil properties) at two scales (global and biomes). Results: Our models explained up to 60% of the variance in trait distribution. At global scale, the energy gradient had the strongest influence on traits. However, within‐biome models revealed different relationships among biomes. Notably, the functional composition of tropical forests was more influenced by precipitation and soil properties than energy availability, whereas temperate forests showed the opposite pattern. Depending on the trait studied, response to gradients was more variable and proportionally weaker in boreal forests. Community unweighted means were better predicted than weighted means for almost all models. Main conclusions: Worldwide, trees require a large amount of energy (following latitude) to produce dense wood and seeds, while leaves with large surface to weight ratios are concentrated in temperate forests. However, patterns of functional composition within‐biome differ from global patterns due to biome specificities such as the presence of conifers or unique combinations of climatic and soil properties. We recommend assessing the sensitivity of tree functional traits to environmental changes in their geographic context. Aim: The aim of this study is to report the case of the orthopedic and orthodontic treatment in a young patient affected by DiGeorge Syndrome and Familial Mediterranean Fever.Case Report: An 8-year-old boy with dysmorphic facial features was brought to our observation. Anamnesis revealed signs of fetal respiratory distress, previous surgically removed subdural hematoma, recurrent episodes of fever, arthralgia, polyserositis, hepatosplenomegaly, chronic interstitial nephritis with hypertension, microprotenuria, normocytic anemia, hyperparathyroidism and secondary amyloidosis. DNA sequencing identified microdeletions on 22q11.2 and MEFV mutation. The patient was in treatment with immunosuppressive agents, colchicine, antihypertensive therapy, calcitriol, erythropoietin, and low-protein diet. An intraoral and extraoral examination, as well as radiographic and model analysis, were performed in order to define an accurate diagnosis and a proper rehabilitation planning. An orthopedic-orthodontic treatment was performed and satisfactory final results obtained.Conclusions: Literature does not describe cases of patients having DiGeorge syndrome associated to Familial Mediterranean Fever undergoing orthodontic and orthopedic treatment. In this patient an early started treatment with a timely management of orthopedic and orthodontic forces allowed to reach positive and stable results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: In this article, we report and discuss the results obtained from a survey of plants, microorganisms (bacteria and fungi), and soil elements along a chronosequence in the first 600 m of the Maliy Aktru glacier's forefront (Altai Mountains, Russia). Many glaciers of the world show effects of climate change. Nonetheless, except for some local reports, the ecological effects of deglaciation have been poorly studied and have not been quantitatively assessed in the Altai Mountains. Here, we studied the ecological changes of plants, fungi, bacteria, and soil elements that take the form of a primary ecological succession and that took place over the deglaciated soil of the Maliy Aktru glacier during the last 50 year. According to our measurements, the glacier lost about 12 m per year during the last 50 years. Plant succession shows clear signs of changes along the incremental distance from the glacier forefront. The analysis of the plant α‐ and β‐diversity confirmed an expected increase of them with increasing distance from the glacier forefront. Moreover, the analysis of β‐diversity confirmed the hypothesis of the presence of three main stages of the plant succession: (a) initial (pioneer species) from 30 to 100 m; (b) intermediate (r‐selected species) from 110 to 120–150 m; and (c) final (K‐selected species) from 150 to 550. Our study also shows that saprotrophic communities of fungi are widely distributed in the glacier retreating area with higher relative abundances of saprotroph ascomycetes at early successional stages. The evolution of a primary succession is also evident for bacteria, soil elements, and CO2 emission and respiration. The development of biological communities and the variation in geochemical parameters represent an irrefutable proof that climate change is altering soils that have been long covered by ice. Aims: The aim of this study is to report the case of the orthodontic treatment in a patient affected by primary hyperoxaluria type 1 and subjected to a combinate liver-kidney transplant.Methods and Results: The 9-year patient was admitted to our department for the presence of facial dysmorphism. The patient was affected by primary hyperoxaluria type 1 and has undergone a combined liver-kidney transplantation. At the time of the visit, he was in treatment with immunosuppressive drugs and received a corticosteroid and an antibiotic therapy monthly. An intraoral and extraoral examination, as well as radiographic and model analysis, was performed in order to define an accurate diagnosis and a proper rehabilitation planning. An orthopedic-orthodontic treatment was performed and satisfactory final results obtained. A laser gingivectomy was also realized for eliminate the gengival hyperplasia probably induced by cyclosporine assumption. Both skeletal and dental relationships were improved by the treatment, reaching a good dental arches alignment.Conclusion: An early diagnosis, as well as a multidisciplinary approach, is very important in patients with rare diseases. Aims: Turner syndrome (TS) patients have phenotypical variable presentations and they are more susceptible to endocrine, auto-immune, and structural anomalies. Typical clinical characteristics are short stature and premature ovarian insufficiency. Patients with TS show a typical cranial-facial morphology with bi-maxillary bi-retrusion, high-arched palate, micrognathia, and class II malocclusion. Aim of our study is to present the orthopedic-orthodontic treatment approach of a young TS patient and data of stability after 7 years.Methods and Results: A careful analysis of anamnestic data was performed. After extraoral and intraoral examination, cephalometric measurements and examination of models, appropriate orthopedic-orthodontic appliances were positioned in order to correct skeletal alterations due to primary pathology as much as possible. Consistent improvements were observed after the treatment. Clinical and radiographic follow-up at 7 years showed a net improvement of head posture and stability of the occlusal results.Conclusions: An early diagnosis and appropriate orthopedic-orthodontic intervention allow to simplify the management of TS patients and provide satisfactory and stable results. Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a childhood pathology with a peak of incidence ranging from 1 to 4 years of age, though diagnosis is often made in adult age. LCH is clinically classified into three types: eosinophilic granuloma, Hand-Schuller-Christian disease and Abt-Letterer-Siwe disease. We report a case of Hand-Schüller-Christian disease with diabetes insipidus, skull and maxillary involvement in a 16-year-old boy referred to our observation for gradual increase in mobility of the teeth and subsequent gradual loss of the second premolars and the first molars of the upper jaw. Due to the extension of the lesion and the age of the patient, surgery, and chemotherapy was chosen as the more fit treatment according to the current protocol. The clinical and radiological evaluation at the end of the therapy and after 5 years showed complete remission. The absence of relapse has allowed to initiate a fixed orthodontic dental alignment treatment with a good response to orthodontic treatment despite the underlying disease. The present case exemplifies the importance of close multidisciplinary dental and medical collaboration including general dentistry, periodontology, oral medicine, oral and maxillofacial pathology, oral radiology, orthodontics and hematology-oncology for diagnosis, management, treatment monitoring, and decision-making. We present here the development of a novel virtual screening protocol combining Structure-based and Ligand-based drug design approaches for the identification of mouse mPGES-1 inhibitors. We used the existing 3D structural data of the murine enzyme to hypothesize the inhibitors binding mode, which was the starting point for docking simulations, shape screening, and pharmacophore hypothesis screening. The protocol allowed the identification of 16 mouse mPGES-1 inhibitors with low micromolar activity, which, notably, also inhibit the human enzyme in the same concentration range. The inhibitors predicted binding mode is expected to be the base for the rational drug design of new potent dual species inhibitors of human and murine mPGES-1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Biological diversity analysis is among the most informative approaches to describe communities and regional species compositions. Soil ecosystems include large numbers of invertebrates, among which soil bugs (Crustacea, Isopoda, Oniscidea) play significant ecological roles. The aim of this study was to provide advices to optimize the sampling effort, to efficiently monitor the diversity of this taxon, to analyze its seasonal patterns of species composition, and ultimately to understand better the coexistence of so many species over a relatively small area. Terrestrial isopods were collected at the Natural Reserve 'Saline di Trapani e Paceco' (Italy), using pitfall traps monthly monitored over 2 years. We analyzed parameters of α- and β-diversity and calculated a number of indexes and measures to disentangle diversity patterns. We also used various approaches to analyze changes in biodiversity over time, such as distributions of species abundances and accumulation and rarefaction curves. As concerns species richness and total abundance of individuals, spring resulted the best season to monitor Isopoda, to reduce sampling efforts, and to save resources without losing information, while in both years abundances were maximum between summer and autumn. This suggests that evaluations of β-diversity are maximized if samples are first collected during the spring and then between summer and autumn. Sampling during these coupled seasons allows to collect a number of species close to the γ-diversity (24 species) of the area. Finally, our results show that seasonal shifts in community composition (i.e., dynamic fluctuations in species abundances during the four seasons) may minimize competitive interactions, contribute to stabilize total abundances, and allow the coexistence of phylogenetically close species within the ecosystem. Tropical deforestation is well known to have serious negative consequences for biodiversity, terrestrial carbon sinks and the balance of atmospheric greenhouse gases. By contrast, selective logging of tropical forests is often regarded as having a lesser impact on the ecosystem particularly in long terms, even though there have been few critical evaluations of the practice, particularly in Africa. We compared field data from 511 plots in the tropical forest of Sierra Leone, Ghana, Cameroon and Gabon. These plots were subject to different forest management practices: no recent logging (primary forests), selective logging (up to 30 years old) and re-grown secondary forests post clear-cutting (at least 20 years ago). Our findings suggest that the vertical structure and plant richness of the selectively logged and secondary forests change in different amplitude from those of primary forests, but stem density and the prevalence of vine and weed species differ greatly. We show that the effects of selective logging are greater than those expected simply from the removal of commercial species, and can persist for decades. Selective logging, unless it is practiced at very low harvest intensities, can significantly reduce the biomass of a tropical forest for many decades, seriously diminishing aboveground carbon storage capacity, and create opportunities for weeds and vines to spread and slow down the ecological succession. The aim of this study was to assess the correlation between osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) and dentinogenesis imperfecta (DI) from both a clinical and histological point of view, particularly clarifying the structural and ultrastructural dentine changes. Design. Sixteen children (6–12 years aged) with diagnosis of OI were examined for dental alterations referable to DI. For each patient, the OI type (I, III, or IV) was recorded. Extracted or normally exfoliated primary teeth were subjected to a histological examination (to both optical microscopy and confocal laser-scanning microscopy). Results. A total of ten patients had abnormal discolourations referable to DI: four patients were affected by OI type I, three patients by OI type III, and three patients by OI type IV. The discolourations, yellow/brown or opalescent grey, could not be related to the different types of OI. Histological exam of primary teeth showed severe pathological change in the dentin, structured into four different layers. A collagen defect due to odontoblast dysfunction was theorized to be on the base of the histological changes. Conclusions. There is no correlation between the type of OI and the type of discolouration. The underlying dentinal defect seems to be related to an odontoblast dysfunction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
