BACKGROUND: Pesticides are indispensable in agriculture and can effectively improve the yields and quality of crops. Due to their weak water solubility, most pesticides need to be dissolved by adding solubilizing adjuvants. In this work, based on molecular recognition of the macrocyclic host, we developed a novel supramolecular adjuvant, called sulfonated azocalix[4]arene (SAC4A), which significantly improves the water solubility of pesticides. RESULTS: SAC4A presents multiple advantages, including high water solubility, strong binding affinity, universality, and simple preparation. SAC4A showed an average binding constant value of 1.66 × 105 M−1 for 25 pesticides. Phase solubility results indicated that SAC4A increased the water solubility of pesticides by 80–1310 times. The herbicidal, fungicidal, and insecticidal activities of supramolecular formulations were found to be superior to those of technical pesticides, and the herbicidal effects were even better than those of commercial formulations. CONCLUSION: Overall results revealed the potential of SAC4A to improve the solubility and effectiveness of pesticides, providing a new development idea for the application of adjuvants in agriculture. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry. As the main component of syngas, reducing CO2 to CO with high selectivity through photocatalysis could provide a sustainable way to alleviate energy shortage issues. Developing a photocatalytic system with low cost and high performance that is environmentally friendly is the ultimate goal towards CO2 photoreduction. Herein, an efficient and economic three‐component heterojunction photocatalyst is designed and fabricated for converting CO2 to CO in the absence of organic sacrificial agents. The heterojunction is made of Cu2−xS nanotubes coated with a carbon layer (C‐Cu2−xS) and g‐C3N4. By using the classical MOF material HKUST‐1 as a precursor, hollow tubular‐like metal sulfides (C‐Cu2−xS) with carbon coating were synthesized and further loaded on g‐C3N4, forming a three‐component heterojunction C‐Cu2−xS@g‐C3N4. The carbon coat in C‐Cu2−xS@g‐C3N4 acts as an electron reservoir, which facilitates electron–hole pair separation. The optimized C‐Cu2−xS@g‐C3N4 acted as a photocatalyst in CO2 reduction with a high reactivity of 1062.6 μmol g−1 and selectivity of 97 %. Compared with bare g‐C3N4 (158.4 μmol g−1) and C‐Cu2−xS, the reactivity is nearly 7 and 23‐fold enhanced and this CO generation rate is higher than most of the reported Cu2S or g‐C3N4 composites under similar conditions. The prominent activity may result from enhanced light adsorption and effective charge separation. This work might open up an alternative method for the design and fabrication of high‐performance and low‐cost photocatalysts for efficiently and durably converting CO2 to CO with high selectivity. Dip coating is widely applied in industries for coating a solid substrate with a fluid because of its simplicity and applicability to substrates with different shapes. An experimental study was reported with dip coater on the film coating of solid plates by withdrawal from a tank filled with silicone oil fluids or polyacrylic acid (PAA) solutions with different rheological properties, the liquid film thickness deposited on the plate substrate was measured using capacitance method, and the evolution of free surface morphology was recorded with photographs. The purpose was to investigate the effects of plate substrate roughness, withdrawal speed, rest time, and fluid viscosity on the liquid film thickness and free surface morphology in detail. Results showed that the increases in coating fluid viscosity, withdrawal speed, and substrate roughness are beneficial to film thickening. The influence of rest time on liquid film thickness could be neglected when it was greater than 3 min. For silicone oil fluids, the free surface exhibited a depression, which gradually deepened, with the increasing in withdrawal speed and viscosities. By contrast, PAA solutions showed a bump on the free surface, exhibiting a curvature that increased with the increasing in withdrawal speed and concentrations. © 2016 Curtin University of Technology and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. The film-flow problem in dip coating is simulated numerically for non-Newtonian fluids based on Carreau-Yasuda (CY) and Herschel-Bulkley (HB) constitutive equations, with particular focus on coating-film-thickening phenomena and on the evolution of free surface and flow field under different sets of conditions. Finite element method (FEM) is combined with remeshing technique using a commercial code (Polyflow). Numerical predictions of the final film thickness and free surface for HB and CY fluids are successfully compared with experiments under the given conditions. Results show that the combination of FEM-remeshing technique could be useful for dip-coating design and optimization. Effects of coating fluid properties and withdrawal speed on film thickening and free surface shape and location are also discussed. Flow fields under different conditions are presented to analyze the evolution of the entire flow field and flow characteristics in detail. POLYM. ENG.
