Background: Previous studies involving risk–benefit analysis of trastuzumab deruxtecan (DS‐8201) have indicated the benefit of this treatment, although it may increase the risk of interstitial lung disease (ILD) and/or pneumonitis in certain patients. This study aimed to assess the safety of DS‐8201. Methods: A search was done for relevant articles in four electronic databases: PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and ClinicalTrials.gov. All reports published up until November 2, 2022, were included, and study types were restricted to clinical trials; the last search was then updated to January 10, 2023. We also assessed the quality of the literature with the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions and the Methodological Index for Non‐Randomized Studies tool, and then performed a meta‐analysis with R version 4.2.1. Results: A total of 1428 patients reported in 13 articles were included in this study. The analysis revealed that the most common all‐grade treatment‐emergent adverse events (TEAEs) were nausea and fatigue. The most common TEAE of grade 3 or above (grade ≥3) was neutropenia. The incidences of ILD and/or pneumonitis for all‐grade and grade ≥3 TEAEs were 12.5% and 2.2%, respectively. Conclusions: This comprehensive summary of the incidence of TEAEs associated with DS‐8201 in clinical trials provides an important guide for clinicians. The most common TEAEs were gastrointestinal reactions and fatigue; meanwhile, the most common grade ≥3 TEAE was hematological toxicity. ILD and/or pneumonitis were specific adverse drug reactions associated with DS‐8201, of which physicians should be particularly aware for their higher morbidity and rates of grade ≥3 TEAEs. Aims: To explore the association of dietary vitamin intake from food and/or supplement with mortality in US adults with diabetes. Materials and Methods: This prospective cohort study was conducted on 5418 US adults with diabetes from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999–2018. Vitamin intake from food and supplements was estimated via dietary recall. Sufficient intake from food or food + supplement was defined as ≥ estimated average requirement (EAR) and ≤ tolerable upper intake level (UL), insufficient intake, < EAR; and excess intake, > UL. Medium supplementary intake was classified as > median level and ≤75th percentile; low intake, ≤ median level; and high intake, >75th percentile, as reported by supplement users. Results: A total of 1601 deaths occurred among the participants over a median follow‐up of 11.0 years. Cox regression analysis of the single‐vitamin model demonstrated that sufficient vitamin A and folate intake from food and food + supplement and medium vitamin A and folate intake from supplement; sufficient riboflavin, niacin, and vitamin B6 intake from food and food + supplement; and sufficient thiamin and vitamin E intake from food + supplement were significantly associated with reduced all‐cause mortality (all p < 0.05). In the multivitamin model, sufficient vitamin A and folate intake from food and food + supplement, medium vitamin A and folate intake from the supplement, and sufficient niacin intake from food and food + supplement were inversely associated with mortality (all p < 0.05). Background: Gallbladder cancer (GBC), a highly malignant gastrointestinal tumor, lacks effective therapies. Foxhead box A2 (FOXA2) is a tumor suppressor that is poorly expressed in various human malignancies. This study aimed to ascertain FOXA2 expression in GBC and its relevance to tumor metastasis, and to elucidate its regulatory mechanism with epithelial‐mesenchymal transition (EMT) as an entry point, in the hope of providing a potential therapeutic target for GBC. Methods: FOXA2 expression in GBC tissues was first detected using immunohistochemistry (IHC), followed by correlation analysis with clinicopathological characteristics and survival prognosis. Subsequently, the effects of FOXA2 on GBC cell migration and invasion, as well as EMT induction, were evaluated by scratch, Transwell, RT‐PCR, and Western blot assays, together with animal experimentation. Ultimately, mRNA sequencing was carried out to identify the key downstream target genes of FOXA2 in controlling the EMT process in GBC cells, and dual‐luciferase reporter and chromatin immunoprecipitation assays were used to determine its regulatory mechanism. Results: FOXA2 was underexpressed in GBC tissues and inversely correlated with tumor node metastasis stage, lymph node metastasis, and poor patient prognosis. FOXA2 exerts suppressive effects on EMT and metastasis of GBC in vivo and in vitro. FOXA2 can impede GBC cell migratory and invasive functions and EMT by positively mediating serine protein kinase inhibitor B5 (SERPINB5) expression. Conclusion: FOXA2 directly binds to the SERPINB5 promoter region to stimulate its transcription, thereby modulating the migration and invasion behaviors of GBC cells as well as the EMT process, which might be an effective therapeutic target against GBC. Objective: To estimate the pooled prevalence, as well as the spatial and temporal distribution, of urolithiasis among subjects in China. Materials and Methods: We conducted a comprehensive search of both Chinese and English databases to retrieve literature pertaining to the prevalence of urolithiasis in the indigenous Chinese population. A random‐effects meta‐analysis model was employed to calculate the pooled prevalence of urolithiasis. Subgroup analyses were conducted based on factors such as time, region, gender, and sample size. Prevalence and spatial distribution maps were created based on provinces and latitude/longitude coordinates. Results: A total of 46 studies conducted in 22 provinces across China were included in this meta‐analysis and the pooled prevalence of urolithiasis, kidney stones, ureteric calculi, urethral and bladder stones were 8.1% (95% confidence interval [CI] 5.6–11.1%), 7.8% (95% CI 5.8–10.0%), 3.2% (95% CI 0.6–5.7%), 0.5% (95% CI 0.1–0.9%). Most of the urolithiasis prevalence screening in China was concentrated between 100° E and 120° E, with higher rates observed in low latitude areas. Subgroup analysis of kidney stones revealed that Guangdong (12.7%) and Guangxi (10.3%) had the highest prevalence, with the eastern developed area exhibiting higher rates compared to the west. The prevalence in males was higher than in females (odds ratio 1.67, 95% CI 1.46–1.92), although the gender gap has significantly reduced since 2006. Moreover, a greater sample size is associated with a decreased prevalence of urolithiasis. Conclusions: The prevalence of urolithiasis is increasing in China, and there are noteworthy regional or provincial disparities in occurrence. It is worth noting that the current number of screening studies in some areas is insufficient. Additional investigations with appropriate sample sizes should be supplemented in time. This paper aims to disclose the evolutionary mechanism of banks' green credit and construction and demolition waste (CDW) recycling enterprises' green technology innovation behavior during the operation period of CDW recycling public–private partnership projects with absorptive capacity theory. The conclusions are as follows. First, the government subsidy coefficient has a positive effect on the evolution of banks to participate in green credit. Second, absorptive capacity and the level of collaboration have a positive effect on the evolution of CDW recycling enterprises to collaborative innovation. Drawing on the behavioral theory, this study examines how the misalignment between a firm's environmental effort and the level of subsidies received from the government in affecting the firm's investment in non‐environmental R&D. Based on a sample of Chinese A‐share listed firms from 2008 to 2019 and using polynomial regression techniques, our findings reveal that firms in the "low effort‐high subsidies" group exhibit lower non‐environmental R&D intensity compared to firms in the "high effort‐low subsidies" group. This study contributes to the literature by shedding light on the interplay between corporate environmental efforts, government subsidies, and non‐environmental R&D investment. The findings suggest the importance of aligning the environmental efforts of firms with subsidy levels from the government to effectively allocate resources for different types of R&D. The implications of this research suggest that firms should carefully consider aligning their environmental efforts with government subsidies to optimize their investment in non‐environmental R&D and overall innovation strategy. Furthermore, the study indicates that firms and governments should prudently balance the relationship between environmental R&D and non‐environmental R&D to avoid any negative impact on the latter. Aims: High fasting plasma glucose (HFPG) is an independent risk factor for several adverse health outcomes and has become a serious public health problem. We aimed to evaluate the spatial pattern and temporal trend of disease burden attributed to HFPG from 1990 to 2019 using data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019. Materials and Methods: Using data from GBD 2019, we estimated the numbers and age‐standardized rates of deaths and disability‐adjusted life years (DALYs) attributed to HFPG by calendar year, age, gender, country, region, Socio‐demographic Index (SDI), and specific causes. The joinpoint regression analysis was used to assess the temporal trends of deaths and DALYs from 1990 to 2019. Results: In 2019, globally, the numbers of deaths and DALYs attributable to HFPG were approximately 6.50 million and 172.07 million, respectively, with age‐standardized rates of 83.00 per 100,000 people and 2104.26 per 100,000 people, respectively. From 1990 to 2019, the global numbers of deaths and DALYs attributed to HFPG have over doubled. The age‐standardized rate of DALYs showed an increasing trend, particularly in males and in regions with middle SDI or below. The leading causes of the global disease burden attributable to HFPG in 2019 were diabetes mellitus, ischaemic heart disease, stroke, and chronic kidney disease. Conclusions: HFPG is an important contributor to increasing the global and regional disease burden. Inhalation of crystalline silica (CS) can cause silicosis, which is one of the most serious interstitial lung diseases worldwide. Autophagy dysfunction is an essential step in silicosis progression. In this study, we aim to identify the effect of growth arrest‐specific protein 6 (Gas6) during autophagy induction and macrophage inflammatory response caused by CS. After RAW 264.7 macrophages exposed to CS, the levels of Gas6 and autophagy markers (p62, Beclin1, and LC3‐II/LC3‐I) were increased, accompanied with enhanced inflammatory cytokines secretion. Using autophagy activator (rapamycin) repressed, whereas autophagy inhibitor (3‐methyladenine) promoted inflammatory cytokines release. Besides, inhibition of Gas6 aggravated CS‐induced inflammatory response, and autophagy inhibition facilitated the promoted effect of Gas6 silencing, resulting in elevated expression of inflammatory cytokines. These findings reveal the protective effects of Gas6 and autophagy in macrophages in response to CS exposure, and highlight the autophagy regulated by Gas6 may be a potential prevention target for CS‐induced lung inflammatory response. Based on the insights of the behavioral theory of the firm and the agency theory, we explore the impact of negative performance feedback (NPF) on the dynamic equilibrium between exploitative and exploratory innovation. Using the 2007–2020 listed Chinese A‐share high‐tech manufacturing companies as a research sample, our study finds that NPF has a significant positive impact on the punctuated equilibrium innovation of firms. Silicosis not a disease of the past. It is an irreversible, fibrotic lung disease specifically caused by exposure to respirable crystalline silica (RCS) dust. Over 20,000 incident cases of silicosis were identified in 2017 and millions of workers continue to be exposed to RCS. Identified case numbers are however a substantial underestimation due to deficiencies in reporting systems and occupational respiratory health surveillance programmes in many countries. Insecure workers, immigrants and workers in small businesses are at particular risk of more intense RCS exposure. Much of the focus of research and prevention activities has been on the mining sector. Hazardous RCS exposure however occurs in a wide range of occupational setting which receive less attention, in particular the construction industry. Recent outbreaks of silicosis associated with the fabrication of domestic kitchen benchtops from high‐silica content artificial stone have been particularly notable because of the young age of affected workers, short duration of RCS exposure and often rapid disease progression. Developments in nanotechnology and hydraulic fracking provide further examples of how rapid changes in technology and industrial processes require governments to maintain constant vigilance to identify and control potential sources of RCS exposure. Despite countries around the world dealing with similar issues related to RCS exposure, there is an absence of sustained global public health response including lack of consensus of an occupational exposure limit that would provide protection to workers. We aimed to investigate whether alcohol intake contributes to lung function levels and which beverage type may have an effect. We investigated 3742 participants from the Wuhai‐Zhuhai Cohort and 12,526 participants from the Dongfeng‐Tongji Cohort, and they were followed up for 3 and 5 years, respectively. Information on the type and daily amount of alcohol intake was collected through face‐to‐face interviews. Lung function was measured by trained physicians using electronic spirometers. Compared with nondrinkers, moderate alcohol intake was significantly associated with a 70.03 and 74.92 mL increase in FEV1 and FVC, respectively (P < 0.05), after adjusting for covariates. With regard to beverage type, red wine was associated with a 105.31 and 98.91 mL increase in FEV1 and FVC, respectively (P < 0.05). Moderate alcohol intake was also associated with a 53.37 and 66.17 mL increase in FEV1 and FVC for liquor, respectively, and a 106.90 and 103.62 mL increase for red wine (all Ps < 0.05). In the longitudinal analyses, moderate alcohol intake and red wine were associated with a 67.77 and 103.77 mL increase in FVC, respectively (P < 0.05). GO membranes crosslinked by planar cation (e. g. TMPyP, a cationic porphyrin) meet the requirements of green fabrication, because TMPyP can pre‐assemble on GO sheets. However, their ion sieving performance are unsatisfactory. With shortened water channels, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) membranes owe high water flux, yet the retention of multivalent anions may goes down distinctly on account of Donnan effect decreasing obviously. Herein, we focus on the assembly between partially reduced graphene oxide (p‐rGO) and Anionic planar molecule (tetrasulfonic tetraphenyl porphyrin, TPPS), and then fabricate p‐rGO/TPPS composite membranes via assembling p‐rGO/TPPS sheets on base membrane. Anionic planar molecule is firstly used as crosslinking agent for graphene‐based membranes, which has the advantage of 100% atomic efficiency. The fabricated p‐rGO/TPPS membranes show better sieving performance than GO/TMPyP membranes on both side of rejection of Na2SO4 and water flux. Moreover, water flux go up to around another double though rejection decline slightly as the polyther sulfone (PES) base membrane with large surface pores is used. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND: The potential role of occupational exposures in the development of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) remains unclear, particularly in high‐incidence areas. METHODS: The authors conducted a population‐based case‐control study, consisting of 2514 incident NPC cases and 2586 randomly selected population controls, in southern China from 2010 to 2014. Occupational history and other covariates were self‐reported using a questionnaire. Multivariate logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the risk of NPC associated with occupational exposures. Restricted cubic splines were used to evaluate potentially nonlinear duration‐response relations. RESULTS: Individuals who had exposure to occupational dusts (OR, 1.45; 95% CI, 1.26‐1.68), chemical vapors (OR, 1.37; 95% CI, 1.17‐1.61), exhausts/smokes (OR, 1.42; 95% CI, 1.25‐1.60), or acids/alkalis (OR, 1.56; 95% CI, 1.30‐1.89) in the workplace had an increased NPC risk compared with those who were unexposed. Risk estimates for all 4 categories of occupational exposures appeared to linearly increase with increasing duration. Within these categories, occupational exposure to 14 subtypes of agents conferred significantly higher risks of NPC, with ORs ranging from 1.30 to 2.29, including dust from metals, textiles, cement, or coal; vapor from formaldehyde, organic solvents, or dyes; exhaust or smoke from diesel, firewood, asphalt/tar, vehicles, or welding; and sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, and concentrated alkali/ammonia. CONCLUSIONS: Occupational exposures to dusts, chemical vapors, exhausts/smokes, or acids/alkalis are associated with an excess risk of NPC. If the current results are causal, then the amelioration of workplace conditions might alleviate the burden of NPC in endemic areas. Aim: This study aimed to identify the epidemiological characteristics and transmission dynamics of paediatric cases.Methods: Information on 1369 paediatric cases with COVID-19 from 8 December 2019 to 7 March 2020 in Hubei province was extracted from the National Infectious Disease Surveillance System. The analysis included epidemic curves, temporal-spatial distribution, clinical classification and interval times between onset and diagnosis.Results: Among 1369 paediatric cases, the median age was 9 years and 58.2% of them were males. The proportion of severe and critical cases in children was lower than that in adults and the proportion of asymptomatic cases in children was five times greater than for adult cases. The first paediatric case was reported on 2 January 2020, and the daily number of new paediatric cases remained high from 1 February through to 22 February. The epidemiological curve of paediatric cases lagged behind that of adults by 19 days, and the first spike of the epidemic curve in senior high school students occurred 1 week earlier than in other paediatric groups. The proportion of clustered cases among children was about twice that for adults. The median of the interval in paediatric cases between onset and diagnosis, isolation and notification were 3, 0 and 3 days, respectively, and all of those were significantly shorter than in adults.Conclusions: The epidemic curve of child cases lagged behind that of adult cases by 19 days, and the major form of transmission observed was in clusters. Background: With the rapid development of the socioeconomic status, the mortality of several cancers has been changed in China during the past 30 years. We aimed to estimate the trends of mortality and years of life lost (YLLs) of various cancers in urban and rural areas of China from 1990 to 2017. Methods: The mortality data were collected from Chinese yearbooks and the age structure of population from the Chinese sixth population census were used as reference to calculate age‐standardized mortality rates (ASMRs) and YLLs rates. Joinpoint regression analysis was implemented to calculate the annual percent change (APC) of mortality rates and YLL rates for cancers. YLLs owing to premature death were calculated as age‐specific cancer deaths multiplied by the reference life expectancy at birth of 80 years for male and 82.5 years for female. Results: The ASMRs of all cancers showed significant decreasing trends for urban residents from 1990 to 2017, such downward trend without significance was also observed among rural residents. Interestingly, ASMRs of lung cancer and breast cancer have raised continuously in rural areas since 1990. The age‐standardized YYL rates for urban and rural residents decreased with 1.02% and 0.85% per year, respectively. YLLs in rural areas were higher than those in urban areas, whereas YLLs of urban outstripped those of rural finally with the increasing in YLLs of urban areas (216.71% for men and 207.87% for women). Conclusion: The ASMRs and YLL rates of all cancers have declined in urban and rural areas from 1990 to 2017. YLLs increased in urban areas and remained higher level in rural areas after 2014 year. Abstract: Serum alpha‐fetoprotein (AFP) is the most commonly used tumor biomarker for screening and diagnosis of primary hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the predictive effect for HCC risk is still unsatisfactory. The aim of this prospective study was to estimate whether the individual genetic correction could improve the prediction efficiency of AFP for HCC risk. A prospective analysis with 9819 baseline HCC‐free individuals based on a large population‐based Chinese cohort study was performed. Two single‐nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with serum AFP level were used to calculate the genetic corrected AFP level (rs12506899 and rs2251844). Statistical analysis including logistic regression analysis and the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve were used to assess the discriminative ability of the original and genetic corrected AFP level for HCC risk. The odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were presented. Fifty‐seven participants were diagnosed with HCC for the first time. After adjusting AFP level with genetic effects, the participants for HCC risk increased compared to those with AFP level alone (OR = 5.34, 95% CI = 2.57–11.13; P < 0.001 vs. OR = 5.04, 95% CI = 2.46–10.30; P < 0.001). In addition, the area under the curve (AUC) for the discrimination of HCC elevated from 0.611 to 0.726. The efficiency in HCC prediction using serum AFP level can be improved by adjusting AFP level based on genetic effects. Purpose: Peripheral blood stem cell mobilization using growth factors is a common method of stem cell collection for transplantation, however, little is reported concerning safety of continued growth factor delivery in exceptional responders with very high white blood cell (WBC) counts in preparation for pheresis. We performed a retrospective study of the safety of growth factor delivery for leukapheresis in those with WBC counts greater than 60,000/µl. Methods: Allogeneic donors received 5 days of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) at a daily dose of 10 or 16 µg/kg. Autologous donors received G-CSF 10 µg/kg/day +/− chemotherapy until peripheral blood CD34+count reached 10/µl. Granulocyte donors received 300 µg dose of G-CSF the day prior to donation. Results: Out of 3,037 leukapheresis collections from 1998 to 2005, we identified 303 collections from 204 donors or patients who had a WBC > 60,000/µl. WBC counts were ≥100,000/µl in seven of these subjects. If inadequate stem cell dose was obtained with pheresis with WBC counts this high, patients had growth factor dosing decreased 50% but still received a dose till stem cell collection was completed. Of the 204 subjects, 122 were patients and 82 were donors. These 204 donors/patients had no serious adverse events reported other than the common reports of myalgia, bone pain, and headache associated with administration of growth factors. Pain levels ranged from mild to severe and usually were managed by over the counter analgesics. Background. The detailed lung radiographic response to silica exposure has not been described. In estimating the exposure-response relationship in silicosis with statistical models, the absence of baseline (unattributable) risk can disable relative-rate estimation or produce widely varying estimates. This obstructs identification of optimum exposure metrics and invalidates comparisons and meta-analyses, which assume a common background rate. Methods. A cohort of 3,000 Chinese tin miners with more than 1,000 cases of silicosis was analyzed for the period 1961-1994. Regular surveillance documented three stages of silicosis. To examine the exposure-response relationship, the intercept in relative-rate models was fixed to correspond to 1% of the observed silicosis rate. Exposure metrics for contributions in different time-windows were simultaneously evaluated, as were burden and cumulative burden metrics. Results. Silica exposures that most contributed to silicosis onset occurred in the period 5-10 years prior (excess annual rate per 10 mg-year/m3, ER = 0.158, 95% CI = 0.125-0.192, or 16% per year). During 10-20 year prior, the excess rate contribution was much smaller (ER = 0.048, 95% CI = 0.037-0.060) but larger again during 20-30 year prior to onset (ER = 0.112, 95% CI = 0.098-0.126). For advanced silicosis, all time periods contributed about equally to the rate of onset. Conclusions. Reliable estimates of parameters were observed, demonstrating exposure contributions over time. Burden metrics with different half-lives suggested some reversibility for silicosis onset with a half-life of 20 years. Advanced silicosis was best predicted with a cumulative burden metric which was consistent with prior observations that previously deposited silica continues to cause pulmonary damage. Am. J. Ind. To document the prevalence of susceptibility to smoking among a sample of White/Caucasian and Chinese Canadian adolescent nonsmokers, and to explore the factors that might explain who is susceptible to smoking. Design: This study used a secondary analysis of data from students participating in the British Columbia Youth Survey on Smoking and Health in 2001/2002. Sample: The sample included 1,870 10th and 11th graders who were nonsmokers with either a White or a Chinese ethnic background. Measurements: Questionnaire data consisted of demographic and social factors, previous smoking experience, and susceptibility to smoking. Results: Among the total sample, 27.7% were susceptible to smoking. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that 11th graders were less susceptible than 10th graders (odds ratio [OR]=0.80, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.64–0.99), and girls were more susceptible than boys (OR=1.32, 95% CI 1.05–1.65). Ethnicity did not help to explain susceptibility to smoking in this study. Conclusions: The findings indicated the effects of gender and grade on predicting susceptibility to smoking. Even though the Chinese Canadian adolescents had the same risk of susceptibility to smoking as White/Caucasians, the factors that put them at risk may be different, which suggests the need to further examine the ethnic-specific predictors of susceptibility to smoking. In order to understand the biological properties of the immune systems of waterfowl and to establish a system for structural studies of duck class I major histocompatibility complex (DuMHC I), a complex of DuMHC I with duck β2-microglobulin (Duβ2m) and the peptide AEIEDLIF (AF8) derived from H5N1 NP residues 251-258 was assembled. The complex was crystallized; the crystals belonged to space group C2221, with unit-cell parameters a = 54.7, b = 72.4, c = 102.2 Å, and diffracted to 2.3 Å resolution. Matthews coefficient calculation and initial structure determination by molecular replacement showed that the crystals did not contain the whole DuMHC I complex, but instead contained the DuMHC I α3 domain and a Duβ2m molecule (DuMHC I α3+β2m). Another complex of DuMHC I with the peptide IDWFDGKE derived from a chicken fusion protein also generated the same results. The stable structure of DuMHC I α3+β2m may reflect some unique characteristics of DuMHC I and pave the way for novel MHC structure-related studies in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

β2-Microglobulin (β2m) is an essential subunit of MHC I molecules; it stabilizes the structure of MHC I and plays a pivotal role in coreceptor recognition. To date, structures of β2m have been solved for three different mammals: human, mouse and cattle. In order to illuminate the molecular evolutionary origin of β2m, an understanding of its structure in lower vertebrates becomes important. Here, grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus) β2m (Ctid-β2m) was expressed, purified and crystallized. Diffraction data were collected to a resolution of 2.5 Å. The crystal belongs to space group P212121, with unit-cell parameters a = 38.72, b = 40.65, c = 71.12 Å. The Matthews coefficient and the solvent content were calculated to be 2.56 Å Da-1 and 52.07%, respectively, for one molecule per asymmetric unit. Background: Mineral dusts that contain crystalline silica have been associated directly or indirectly with the development of pneumoconiosis or silicosis, non-malignant respiratory diseases, lung cancer, and other diseases. The health impacts on workers with silica mixed dust exposure in tin mines and dose-response relationships between cumulative dust exposure and the mortality from lung cancer are investigated., Methods: A cohort of 7,837 workers registered in the employment records in 4 Chinese tin mines between 1972 and 1974 was identified for this study and the mortality follow-up was traced through 1994. Of the cohort, the cause of death was ascertained for 1,061 (97%) of the 1,094 deceased workers. Standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) were calculated for all workers, non-exposed workers, and dust-exposed workers with different exposure levels, silicotics, and non-silicotics based on Chinese national rates., Results: The mortality from all causes in four tin mines was nearly the same as the national mortality. Malignant neoplasm, cerebrovascular disease, and cardiovascular disease accounted for 68.6% of all deaths. Mortality excess from lung cancer, liver cancer, all malignant diseases, and non-malignant respiratory diseases was observed among dust-exposed workers; a 50-fold excess of pneumoconiosis was observed. There was an upward trend for SMRs of lung cancer was noted from no exposure to low, medium, and high exposure levels (SMRs=1.29, 2.65, 2.66, 3.33). The shape of the exposure-response curve for risk of lung cancer at high exposure levels was inconsistent in these four mines., Conclusions: The findings indicated a positive dose-response relation between exposure to cumulative dust and the mortality of lung cancer.
