Aim: To investigate whether the timing of root canal treatment (primary aim) or other endodontic parameters (secondary aim) is associated with the survival probability of autotransplanted third molars, using a nationwide population‐based database. Methodology: A total of 1811 third molars autotransplanted between 2000 and 2013 met the inclusion criteria and were followed until the end of 2016. The teeth were classified into three groups on the basis of timing between root canal treatment and the autotransplantation: preoperative, extraoral and postoperative treatment groups. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate the association between the timing of root canal treatment and the risk of tooth extraction after autotransplantation. Results: Of the 1811 autotransplanted third molars, 462 were extracted, yielding a 17‐year survival probability of 0.578. The survival probability of autotransplanted teeth that received postoperative root fillings after 17 years was 0.583, which was significantly higher than the 0.434 and 0.566 for teeth that received preoperative and extraoral root fillings, respectively (P = 0.0013). After adjustment for potential confounding factors, teeth that received postoperative root fillings were associated with a significantly lower tooth extraction hazard ratio (HR) compared with those that received extraoral root fillings (adjusted HR, 1.43; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.14–1.78) and those that received preoperative root fillings (adjusted HR, 2.13; 95% CI, 1.19–3.82). Furthermore, the use of a rubber dam during postoperative root filling was associated with a significantly lower extraction rate after autotransplantation (adjusted HR, 0.54; 95% CI, 0.43–0.69). Conclusions: Postoperative root canal treatment resulted in a significantly lower extraction rate than did preoperative or extraoral root canal treatment amongst autotransplanted third molars during a mean follow‐up period of 8.33 years. Expression of Lck, a T-cell lineage-specific tyrosine kinase critical for T-cell development and activation, can be mediated by either proximal or distal lck promoter. We generated BAC transgenic mice in which BAC lck promoter was deleted and bred these transgenes to an Lck knockout background. Lck-PROX mice, in which only the proximal promoter is functional, have maximal Lck protein and normal thymic development through CD4−CD8− double negative (DN) and CD4+CD8+ double positive (DP) stages, but undetectable Lck later in development and reduced mature single positive thymocytes. In contrast, Lck-DIST mice, in which only distal promoter was functional, are deficient in Lck protein in DN and DP thymocytes and severely defective in early T-cell development, with a block at the DN3-DN4 beta checkpoint equivalent to complete Lck knockouts. The ability of the proximal lck promoter to support thymic development is independent of Fyn; while, in contrast, the distal lck promoter alone is completely unable to support development in the absence of Fyn. Notably, normal thymocyte development is restored by presence of both proximal and distal promoters, even when independently expressed on different lck genes. Background and purpose Painful sensations are recently reported to be a non-motor feature of Parkinson's disease ( PD). The non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug ibuprofen is a common painkiller and was reported to be associated with a decreased risk of PD. The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship amongst preceding pain symptoms, use of ibuprofen and risk of PD in a nationwide population-based cohort. Methods The data of participants who were free of PD at baseline were obtained from two large National Health Interview Surveys ( NHIS) in Taiwan, conducted in 2001 and 2005. The information regarding pain status included severity and location of pain. Information regarding pain status, use of ibuprofen, comorbidity of depression and PD-associated risk/protective behaviors was adjusted using proportional hazards models. Results Amongst 33 388 participants, 32 cases of incident PD were identified after a mean follow-up of 3 years. After adjusting for the use of ibuprofen and other PD risk factors, subjects with preceding pain symptoms had a higher incidence of PD than those without pain at baseline, and the hazard ratio was 1.79 (95% CI: 0.71-4.51, P = 0.21) for mild pain and 2.88 (95% CI: 1.05-7.86, P = 0.04) for moderate or severe pain. The PD risk increased by 34% with each additional increment in pain score [hazard ratio = 1.34 (1.03-1.75), P = 0.03], showing a dose-response relationship. Conclusions These findings support the hypothesis that pain is associated with PD in the pre-motor stage of the disease. Pregnancy and lactation produce a plethora of hormonal changes in females that promote maternal care of offspring. Males in the biparental marmoset species ( Callithrix jacchus) demonstrate high levels of parenting behaviour and express enhanced circulating reproductive hormones. Furthermore, these hormonal changes are influenced by paternal experience. To determine whether the paternally experienced male marmoset has altered neurocrine hypothalamic release, as the maternal females does, we examined the release of several reproductive neurocrines, dopamine (DA), oxytocin (OT), vasopressin (AVP) and prolactin (PRL), in cultured explants of the hypothalamus of paternally experienced male marmosets compared to naïve, paternally inexperienced males. DA levels secreted from the isolated hypothalamus were significantly lower in the experienced males, whereas OT and PRL levels were significantly higher than levels found in inexperienced males. PRL levels decreased rapidly in the hypothalamic media, suggesting that PRL production occurs elsewhere. AVP levels did not change. Stimulation of the cultured explants with oestradiol significantly decreased DA levels in the inexperienced males but did not alter the other neurocrines, suggesting a direct effect of oestradiol on DA suppression in the hypothalamus. Although other factors such as age and rearing experience with siblings may play a role in hypothalamic neurocrine levels, these results demonstrate that paternal experience may impact upon the secretion of neurocrines in a male biparental primate. Background Psoriasis is regarded as a systemic inflammatory disease, having been linked in recent studies, to a wide range of systemic disorders. Previous studies have reported a positive correlation between psoriasis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD); however, no studies have been conducted on an ethnic Chinese population. Methods We conducted a population-based study, using a representative cohort from the National Health Insurance database in Taiwan, between 2004 and 2006. The risk of COPD was compared between patients with psoriasis and a matched reference cohort. This study included 2096 psoriasis patients and 8384 randomly selected controls. Results After adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics and selected chronic diseases, the hazard ratio (HR) for COPD in psoriasis patients was 2.35 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.42-3.89) compared with the control group in 18 months of follow-4 up. Men (HR = 2.38, 95% CI: 1.36-4.18) and patients with psoriasis over 50 years of age (HR = 2.19, 95% CI: 1.27-3.77) were more likely to contract COPD. Conclusions We concluded that psoriasis patients were at a greater risk of developing COPD with significantly lower COPD-free survival rates than the comparison cohort ( P < 0.001). Extracorporeal shock-wave therapy (ESWT) has a significant positive effect in accelerating chronic wound healing. However, the bio-mechanisms operating during ESWT of wounds remain unclear. This study investigated the effectiveness of ESWT in the enhancement of diabetic wound healing. A dorsal skin defect (area, 6 x 5 cm) in a streptozotocin-induced diabetes rodent model was used. Fifty male Wistar rats were divided into five groups. Group I consisted of nondiabetic control; group II included diabetic control receiving no ESWT; group III included rats that underwent one session of ESWT (ESW-1) on day 3 (800 impulses at 0.09 mJ/mm2) postwounding; group IV included rats that underwent two sessions of ESWT (ESW-2) on days 3 and 7; and group V included rats that underwent three sessions of ESWT (ESW-3) on days 3, 7, and 10. The wound healing was assessed clinically. Blood perfusion scan was performed with laser Doppler. The VEGF, eNOS, and PCNA were analyzed with immunohistochemical stain. The results revealed that the wound size was significantly reduced in the ESWT-treated rats, especially in the ESW-2 and ESW-3 groups, as compared with the control ( p<0.01). Blood perfusion was significantly increased after ESWT compared with the controls. Histological findings revealed a significant reduction in the topical pro-inflammatory reaction in the ESWT group as compared with the control. In immunohistochemical stain, significant increases in VEGF, eNOS, and PCNA expressions were observed in the ESWT group, especially in the ESW-2 and ESW-3 groups, as compared with the control. In conclusion, treatment with an optimal session of ESWT significantly enhanced diabetic wound healing associated with increased neo-angiogenesis and tissue regeneration, and topical anti-inflammatory response. Objective: To determine the value of simultaneous visualization of the cross-sectional view of both atrioventricular (AV) valves, the pulmonary artery and the aorta (en-face view of the AV valves and great vessels) in the identification of fetuses with transposition of the great arteries (TGA). Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of volume datasets obtained with the spatiotemporal image correlation (STIC) technique from 56 fetuses with and 30 fetuses without congenital heart defects. Volume datasets were reviewed offline to compare the en-face view of the AV valves and great vessels between fetuses with normal echocardiography and those with TGA. Results: The en-face view of both AV valves and great vessels in fetuses with TGA displayed the main pulmonary artery situated side-by-side with the aorta ('big-eyed frog' sign). In contrast, fetuses with normal hearts did not have this characteristic sonographic sign. This novel sonographic sign also helped to identify additional cases of TGA in 17 fetuses with complex heart defects. Aims. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of self-efficacy on depression and to consider the mediating effect of self-care behaviour. Background. Depression is a problem for kidney transplant recipients and can compromise their quality of life. From other studies on chronic illnesses, self-efficacy and self-care behaviour have been considered to be potential determinants for depressive symptoms. However, none of these previous studies have investigated the relationships among these variables in kidney transplantation recipients. Design. A cross-sectional survey employing correlation design and purposive sampling was used. Methods. One hundred and seventy-seven persons who had received a kidney transplant participated. A self-administrated questionnaire and a medical record audit were used to collect data. The data were analysed using correlation and hierarchical linear regression methods. Results. The average score of depressive symptoms was 8·61 SD 7·64. Among the participants in the study, 32·8% had scores of depressive symptoms higher than 11 (indicating mild to severe symptoms of depression). Self-efficacy and self-care behaviour had direct negative effects on depressive symptoms. Self-care behaviour had partial mediating effect on the relationship between self-efficacy and depression. Total variance explained was 23%. Conclusion. Depressive symptoms are still a problem that need to be addressed among kidney transplantation patients. Patients who have higher self-efficacy and higher self-care behaviour will have lower depressive symptoms. Our results support that self-efficacy is the significant predictor of depressive symptoms. Relevance to clinical practice. Self-efficacy is a powerful and modifiable determinant of depressive symptoms. We should design interventions that focus not only on the skill aspects of self-care behaviour but also on those that have a strong connection with self-efficacy. Oncostatin M (OSM) is a member of the interleukin-6 (IL-6) family of cytokines, and binds to the OSM receptor (OSMR) to inhibit cancer growth. Four forms of OSMR have been identified: leukemia inhibitory factor receptor (LIFR), OSMRβ, short-form OSMR (OSMRs) and soluble OSMR (sOSMR). In this study, we examined the type and expression of OSMR in lung adenocarcinomas (LADCs). Expression of OSMR was determined by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), immunoblotting, immunohistochemistry and confocal immunofluorescent microscopy (CIM). Our results showed that, among the four forms of OSMR, OSMRs was mainly expressed in LADC, and expression level of OSMRs correlated with patient survival. CIM revealed that OSMRs was localized on the cell membrane of LADC cell lines in vitro. OSMRs acts as a decoy receptor by reducing the inhibitory effect of OSM on cell growth. Decrease in OSMRs expression by siRNA increased cell sensitivity to OSM, and ectopic expression of OSMRs reduced cell sensitivity to OSM. These results suggest that expression of OSMRs, which operates as a decoy receptor for OSM, is correlated with disease progression and adverse prognosis in patients with LADC. AIMS: The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate the psychometric properties of a Chinese version of the Fatigue Scale-Children (FS-C-C). BACKGROUND: Cancer-related fatigue is one of the most distressing and prevalent symptoms reported by paediatric oncology patients during and after their cancer treatment. A reliable and valid instrument to measure fatigue is essential to the successful clinical care of paediatric oncology patients in Taiwan who experience this troubling symptom. DESIGN AND METHODS: A total of 108 paediatric oncology Taiwanese patients who were aged 7-12 years participated in this cross-sectional, instrumentation study. The FS-C was translated into Chinese by using an established translation/back-translation method. The psychometric testing of the FS-C-C included internal consistency, content validity, construct validity, convergent validity, criterion-related validity and known-group validity. RESULTS: The FS-C-C achieved an acceptable internal consistency coefficient. Content validity was moderately high (content validity indices ranged from 83-100%). Confirmatory factor analysis supported the three-factor model as an acceptable model fit (the goodness-of-fit index and adjusted goodness-of-fit index both were greater than 0.9; normed fit index, 0.89; root-mean-square residual, 0.15). Although the results did not support the known-group hypothesis, the convergent validity, concurrent validity and predictive validity of the FS-C-C were supported by significant associations with the PedsQL Multidimensional Fatigue Scale, the Anxious/Depressed subscale of the Child Behaviour Checklist and the generic and disease-specific scores on the Quality of Life for Children with Cancer instrument, respectively. CONCLUSION: Our newly developed FS-C-C is a reliable and valid instrument for the measurement of cancer-related fatigue intensity in Taiwanese children. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: The FS-C-C could provide useful information to guide clinical practice in assessing and managing cancer-related fatigue in childhood cancer patients in Taiwan. Aims. The purpose of this study was to compare children, diagnosed with cancer, who were attending school, with their healthy peers on emotional and behavioural problems. Background. Children who suffer from cancer experience severe side effects from their treatment protocols and from the uncertainty associated with their disease. We were seeking to find out if these children subsequently experienced more emotional and behavioural problems than their healthy peers. Methods. Parents and teachers of paediatric oncology patients and their healthy schoolmates were recruited. The ratio was one patient to two schoolmates. The Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL) was used to collect data from the parents and teachers of 23 paediatric cancer patients and 46 healthy controls. Children were matched on enrollment in the same grade and socioeconomic status of their families. Paired-t tests were used to compare the differences between the emotional/behavioural scores of both groups of children. Results. The findings of the study indicated that children with cancer had statistically higher scores on the following items of the CBCL: withdrawn/depressed, somatic complaints, social problems, thought problems, hyperactivity/impulsivity, rule-breaking behaviours and aggressive behaviours. Conclusions. School children with cancer in Taiwan did have more emotional/behavioural problems than their peers. Findings from this study suggest that Taiwanese paediatric oncology patients who are able to return to school and their families may need more psychosocial care. Relevance to clinical practice. Species whose geographical distribution encompasses both mainland and island populations provide an ideal system for examining isolation and genetic divergence. In this study, paternally transmitted chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) and maternally transmitted mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) were used to estimate population structure and phylogeography of Pinus luchuensis, a species found in eastern China (ssp. hwangshanensis), Taiwan (ssp. taiwanensis), and the Ryukyu Archipelago (ssp. luchuensis). Gene genealogies of both mtDNA and cpDNA reveal two major lineages. Molecular dating indicates that these lineages diverged before the colonization of P. luchuensis subspecies in Taiwan and the Ryukyu Archipelago. Both mtDNA and cpDNA show a lack of correspondence between molecular phylogeny and subspecies designation. Phylogeographical analysis suggests that paraphyly of the subspecies is the result of recent divergence rather than secondary contacts. In spite of the short divergence history of P. luchuensis on islands, the island populations show the same degree of genetic divergence as mainland populations. Low levels of genetic diversity in the mainland ssp. hwangshanensis suggest demographic bottlenecks. In contrast, the high heterogeneity of genetic composition for island populations is likely to be associated with a history of multiple colonization from the mainland. The spatial apportionment of organelle DNA polymorphisms is consistent with a pattern of stepwise colonization on island populations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Telomeres are specialized DNA-protein structures found at the ends of all linear chromosomes. In mammalian cells, they consist of hexanucleotide (TTAGGG) repeats and multiple associated proteins. Telomeres protect the ends of chromosomes and prevent their recognition as DNA breaks. Loss of functional telomere length below a critical threshold can activate programs leading to cell senescence or death. Telomere length represents a balance between the loss of terminal telomeric repeats, which occurs during cell division with incomplete DNA replication, and the addition of telomeric repeats by the unique RNA-dependent DNA polymerase telomerase. Although most somatic cells do not express telomerase, telomerase is induced in lymphocytes at critical stages of development and activation. Telomerase expression thus may prolong the replicative capacity of lymphocytes and thereby enhance their function in immune responses. We have used murine model systems to address two broadly defined questions about lymphocyte telomere biology: how is telomerase physiologically regulated in T cells responding to antigen challenge, and what is the effect of transcriptionally altered telomerase expression on telomere length and, consequently, on immune function? House dust mites are regarded as important indoor allergens. While the most studies mite allergens are low molecular weight (mw), a high mw Dermatophagoides farinae mite paramyosin (Der f 11) has recently been cloned. We have also cloned a novel high mw Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Dp) mite allergen, Der p 11. The aim of this study was to isolate and express a cDNA gene coding for a Der p 11 allergen, to compare the sequence of Der p 11 with other antigens and to evaluate the presence of IgE reactivity to the recombinant protein (rDer p 11) in the sera of allergic adult patients. The full-length Der p 11 gene was isolated by cDNA library screening, 5′-3′ rapid amplification of cDNA ends and PCR. The cDNA gene was expressed as a glutathione-S-transferase fusion protein in Escherichia coli. The allergenicity of rDer p 11 was tested by human IgE immunodot or immunoblot assay in a large panel of 100 allergic patients with bronchial asthma, allergic rhinitis or eczema. Der p 11 is a 2965 bp cDNA gene with a 2625 bp open reading frame coding for a 875 amino acid protein. The deduced amino acid sequence of the Der p 11 showed significant homology with various invertebrate paramyosins. The prevalence of serum IgE reactivity to rDer p 11 on immunodot assay ranged from 41.7% to 66.7% in different allergic patient groups, whereas it was rare in non-atopic patients with urticaria (18.8%) and in normal individuals (8%). A high frequency (five out of eight) of MAST(Dp)− allergic serum samples had specific IgE-binding activity to rDer p 11 or its fragments on immunoblot assay, even though their IgE-binding activity to Dp extract was either weak or negative. Abstract Vivipary with precocious seedlings in mangrove plants was thought to be a hindrance to long-range dispersal. To examine the extent of seedling dispersal across oceans, we investigated the phylogeny and genetic structure among East Asiatic populations of Kandelia candel based on organelle DNAs. In total, three, 28 and seven haplotypes of the chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) atp B-rbc L spacer, cpDNA trn L-trn F spacer, and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) internal transcribed spacer (ITS) were identified, respectively, from 202 individuals. Three data sets suggested consistent phylogenies recovering two differentiated lineages corresponding to geographical regions, i.e. northern South-China-Sea + East-China-Sea region and southern South-China-Sea region (Sarawak). Phylogenetically, the Sarawak population was closely related to the Ranong population of western Peninsula Malaysia instead of other South-China-Sea populations, indicating its possible origin from the Indian Ocean Rim. No geographical subdivision was detected within the northern geographical region. An analysis of molecular variance (amova) revealed low levels of genetic differentiation between and within mainland and island populations (ΦCT = 0.015, ΦSC = 0.037), indicating conspicuous long-distance seedling dispersal across oceans. Significant linkage disequilibrium excluded the possibility of recurrent homoplasious mutations as the major force causing phylogenetic discrepancy between mtDNA and the trn L-trn F spacer within the northern region. Instead, relative ages of alleles contributed to nonrandom chlorotype–mitotype associations and tree inconsistency. Widespread distribution and random associations (χ2 = 0.822, P = 0.189) of eight hypothetical ancestral cytotypes indicated the panmixis of populations of the northern geographical region as a whole. The design of a narrowband MIC filter using the high-Q lumped resonators is presented. The unloaded Q-factor of the lumped resonator estimated by theory and experiment is about 150 at 2.44 GHz. A two-section bandpass filter prototype is designed and tested. The article focuses on report of stem canker of dragon fruit caused by Alternaria spp. in Taiwan. It mentions symptoms on stems inoculated with the greyish and brownish isolates could not be differentiated and pathogenicity tests were done by wounding the stem using a sterilised needle on ten healthy detached stems of dragon fruit. It also mentions significant differences in phylogenetic lineages for red spots appeared on the inoculated stems.

A letter to the editor is presented in response to the article concerning prenatal diagnosis of congenital left ventricular aneurysm by four-dimensional ultrasonography with spatio-temporal image correlation (STIC).

This work presents the design of a CMOS quadrature voltage-controlled oscillator (QVCO) constructed in a totem-pole configuration in order to reuse the bias current and lower the power consumption. A new feature of using four RC delay lines connected at the output ports of an oscillator is adopted in order to obtain the desired quadrature phase shift of the oscillation signals. An experimental chip is designed and fabricated using 0.18-μm CMOS technology to verify the effectiveness of the design concept. The measurement result shows that the center oscillation frequency of the prototype is 6.3 GHz, associated with a 100-MHz tuning range and -108.7-dBc/Hz phase noise at 1-MHz offset. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Monolithic microwave mixers, operating at 2–3 GHz, have been developed, based on the lumped balanced circuit approach. By using two passive lumped balun circuits on the RF and LO ports, respectively, a wideband balanced mixer with good isolation can be realized. The conversion loss, under the IF at 200 MHz condition, was 12–14 dB at a LO power of 11 dBm. In addition, this mixer demonstrated an input IP3 of 18.9 dBm at 2.4 GHz. AlGaAs/InGaAs heterostructure doped-channel FETs were used to fabricate a monolithic microwave front-end switch. The gate width of FETs were characterized to obtain an optimum condition to achieve better microwave performance. A high-selectivity wideband bandpass filter consisting of a ring resonator and stepped impedance resonators is proposed. A wideband bandpass filter with multiple transmission poles and transmission zeros is obtained. For demonstration, a prototype operating at the frequency band of 4.14-9.56 GHz (with a fractional bandwidth of 79.1%) is designed and fabricated. Good agreements between the simulated and the measured results have been observed, indicating a very sharp out-of-band rejection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
