"Forgotten Australians" are the estimated half a million children who were placed in institutional care in Australia from the 1920s to the 1980s. Increasing numbers are entering older age but many are poorly positioned to age well and with the supports they need. This is often because the lasting effects of childhood institutional care have contributed to poor housing outcomes, including housing insecurity, reliance on social housing, prevalence of rental stress and experiences of homelessness. This paper presents a review of the evidence on the housing experiences and outcomes of people who spent time in childhood institutional care. The evidence review was complemented by qualitative interviews with community service practitioners and representatives of advocacy groups. Based on the prior evidence and fieldwork, we identify data and service gaps that are likely to undermine the capacity of the housing and aged care sectors to improve the care and supports available for Forgotten Australians. We suggest potential improvements to service delivery for people who experienced institutional care as children and directions for further research. Objective: To explore the policy and program implications of the Australian aged care reforms for low‐income older renters. Methods: Interviews and focus groups with low‐income older renters and service providers of both housing and in‐home aged care were undertaken. Result: Analysis of the findings emphasised the complex world of aged care service provision, particularly for low‐income renters and their service providers. Conclusions: Societal, systemic and systematic change is required to ensure easier access to services. Policy and programming must be driven from both the bottom up and the top down, and not take a "market‐making by government" approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An introduction is presented in which the author discusses the topics include research priority areas, aimed at optimizing the availability of a range of age-friendly accommodation; changing needs of older Australians; and reflections and draws attention to key research.

Initiatives to promote consumer choice are increasingly a feature of Australian welfare policies and programs. Consumer Directed Care (CDC) for older people and the National Disability Insurance Scheme for people younger than 65 years with a disability are two examples of this move towards consumer choice in policy and program development. The ability for service users to benefit from these programs is premised on the fact that their housing is stable and suitable. Yet, there is evidence that this is not the case, and many older people and people with disabilities experience significant housing challenges and stress. This article focuses on CDC and its implications for one particular group under housing stress -- low-income older renters. To date, Australia has not had to respond to a nationwide catastrophic event. However, over the past decade, heat waves, bushfires, cyclones, and floods have significantly challenged Australia's disaster preparedness and the surge capacity of local and regional health systems. Given that disaster events are predicted to increase in impact and frequency, the health workforce needs to be prepared for and able to respond effectively to a disaster. To be effective, nurses must be clear regarding their role in a disaster and be able to articulate the value and relevance of this role to communities and the professionals they work with. Since almost all disasters will exert some impact on public health, it is expedient to prepare the public health nursing workforce within Australia. This paper highlights issues currently facing disaster nursing and focuses on the challenges for Australian public health nurses responding to and preparing for disasters within Australia. The paper specifically addresses public health nurses' awareness regarding their roles in disaster preparation and response, given their unique skills and central position in public health.
