Despite their prevalence, workplace diversity and inclusion (D&I) practices continue to produce inconsistent effects on employee attitudes and behaviors. This shines a light on the need for evidence‐based approaches in understanding how employees enact D&I goals. Drawing on self‐determination theory, we argue that employee D&I motivation is an untapped pathway for understanding how inclusion‐supportive employee outcomes (i.e., more inclusion and less exclusion) emerge. In addition, we leverage attribution theory to inform when employee motivation can be shaped, demonstrating that employee attributions of the intentions behind their organization's D&I practices play an important role in shaping their subsequent D&I motivation. Across two studies, latent profile analysis identified five distinct profiles of D&I motivation, which were differentially related to inclusion and exclusion (Study 1) and predicted by D&I attributions (Studies 1 and 2). Combined, these findings highlight the importance of understanding employee motivations and attributions within the context of D&I. Bidentate N‐ligands are paramount to recent advances in nickel‐catalyzed cross‐coupling reactions. Through comprehensive organometallic, spectroscopic, and computational studies on bi‐oxazoline and imidazoline ligands, we reveal that a square planar geometry enables redox activity of these ligands in stabilizing nickel radical species. This finding contrasts with the prior assumption that bi‐oxazoline lacks redox activity due to strong mesomeric donation. Moreover, we conducted systematic cyclic voltammetry (CV) analyses of bidentate pyridyl, oxazoline, and imidazoline nitrogen ligands, along with their corresponding nickel complexes. Complexation with nickel shifts the reduction potentials to a more positive region and narrows the differences in redox potentials among the ligands. Additionally, various ligands led to different degrees of bromide dissociation from singly reduced (L)Ni(Ar)(Br) complexes, reflecting varying reactivity in the subsequent activation of alkyl halides, a crucial step in cross‐electrophile coupling. These insights highlight the significant electronic effects of ligands on the stability of metalloradical species and their redox potentials, which interplay with coordination geometry. Quantifying the electron‐donating, π‐accepting properties of these ligands, as well as their effect on catalyst speciation, provides crucial benchmarks for controlling catalytic activity and enhancing catalyst stability. Stand‐up comedy is a rich arena of sociological inquiry that enables social actors to utter bold truths in a way that educates rather than offends. As such, stand‐up comedy can inform conversations around potentially "thorny" issues like racial inequality. This article draws on primary qualitative content analysis of the work of Kura Forrester, a female, Indigenous comedian in Aotearoa New Zealand, to illustrate the potential of comedians and the medium of stand‐up comedy as agents of change. We employ the concepts "parrhesia," "critical public pedagogy," and "prefiguration" to argue that stand‐up comedy provides a valuable opportunity to challenge racist stereotypes, encourage critical reflection on "race‐thinking," and imagine out loud what an alternative, decolonial future in Aotearoa New Zealand might entail. Small grains provide agronomic benefits that are critical to the success of organic production, and opportunities within local food movements create expanded markets for small grains. However, diversifying rotations with small grains can present challenges related to production, infrastructure, and markets. Here, we draw upon over two decades of integrated research and Extension efforts to support organic small grain production in the Upper Midwest, Northeast, and other regions of the United States where these crops are underutilized. Lessons learned have led to the development of guiding principles for a systems‐level approach to support regional organic small grain production. Forming innovative partnerships between farmers, researchers, and end users is critical. This enables research, production, and markets to adjust to local needs, adapt to available infrastructure, and foster local grain economies. The key research challenges that lie ahead are also discussed, especially adapting organic grain production practices to regional conditions and changing climates. The systems‐level approach to organic small grain research highlighted here will increase the success and resilience of organic farms across the United States and expand the adoption of organic small grain production. In a time of ever‐increasing pressure on the coastal ocean and rising costs, the development of effective and efficient methods for assessing the health of marine ecosystems is becoming essential for continued conservation efforts. Taking advantage of technologies such as remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) may be a way of achieving this, but a quantitative check on the quality of ROV‐derived data is necessary. Here, using coralline algae reefs (maerl beds) as a model habitat, we compared 3D seabed reconstructions obtained from structure‐from‐motion photogrammetry surveys from diver‐held and ROV‐mounted camera systems. We found that both approaches achieved satisfactory alignment and mm‐scale resolution, allowing small‐scale features and individual organisms in the maerl bed to be resolved. The higher quality camera system available to divers resulted in generally lower modelling errors, but the spatial extent of surveys was highly restricted. In contrast, although associated with a slightly higher error, we show that much larger areas can be surveys by ROVs—we reconstructed 11,285 m2 of seabed in just 400 min of ROV deployment time. Moving forward, we recommend that a hybrid survey approach is adopted: utilising ROV surveys for large‐scale monitoring and diver surveys for higher detail insights that are informative for areas with highly complex and fine‐scale morphologies (like coralline algae reefs). Ammonia, which is toxic to the brain, is converted into non‐toxic urea, through a pathway of six enzymatically catalyzed steps known as the urea cycle. In this pathway, N‐acetylglutamate synthase (NAGS, EC 2.3.1.1) catalyzes the formation of N‐acetylglutamate (NAG) from glutamate and acetyl coenzyme A. NAGS deficiency (NAGSD) is the rarest of the urea cycle disorders, yet is unique in that ureagenesis can be restored with the drug N‐carbamylglutamate (NCG). We investigated whether the rarity of NAGSD could be due to low sequence variation in the NAGS genomic region, high NAGS tolerance for amino acid replacements, and alternative sources of NAG and NCG in the body. We also evaluated whether the small genomic footprint of the NAGS catalytic domain might play a role. The small number of patients diagnosed with NAGSD could result from the absence of specific disease biomarkers and/or short NAGS catalytic domain. We screened for sequence variants in NAGS regulatory regions in patients suspected of having NAGSD and found a novel NAGS regulatory element in the first intron of the NAGS gene. We applied the same datamining approach to identify regulatory elements in the remaining urea cycle genes. In addition to the known promoters and enhancers of each gene, we identified several novel regulatory elements in their upstream regions and first introns. The identification of cis‐regulatory elements of urea cycle genes and their associated transcription factors holds promise for uncovering shared mechanisms governing urea cycle gene expression and potentially leading to new treatments for urea cycle disorders. Background: The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) recently instituted cultural safety and cultural competency as its 10th competency with formalized cultural safety training yet to be instituted. Wānanga are Indigenous Māori teaching institutions that can be used contemporarily for cultural safety training. Methods: In 2022, surgical registrars based at Taranaki Base Hospital (TBH) held in‐hospital wānanga ranging from 1 to 3 h focussed on cultural safety, professionalism and wellbeing. This study explores the perspectives of these registrars who attended wānanga using a Kaupapa Māori aligned methodological stance and interpretive phenomenological analysis. Results: Twenty‐six wānanga were held from March 22nd 2022 to January 30th 2023. Six registrars provided their perspectives with four major themes emerging from their stories including: cultural safety; unity; time, place and person; and a new era. Registrars valued the wānanga which was scheduled for Friday afternoons after daily clinical duties. Wānanga facilitated unity and understanding with registrars being able to reflect on the context within which they are practicing – describing it as a new era of surgical training. 'Time' was the biggest barrier to attend wānanga however, the number of wānanga held was testament to the commitment of the registrars. Conclusions: Regular wānanga set up by, and for, surgical registrars cultural safety development is feasible and well subscribed in a rural or provincial NZ setting. A growing and increasingly globalised human population, requiring the movement of goods and commodities, is placing increasing demands on the maritime industry, resulting in a concurrent increase in global shipping activities. This has consequences for the marine environment, particularly for species vulnerable to the impacts of vessel traffic. For example, vessel collisions can result in sub‐lethal or fatal injuries for marine mammals, whilst vessel noise can cause acoustic masking that effectively reduces an animal's listening space, potentially impacting their communication, navigation and foraging capacity.While a number of parallel approaches to mapping collision risk to large whales have arisen, these methods vary in their focus, usually on either co‐occurrence, collision probability, or probability of mortality. However, little attention has been given to the implications of methodological choice and data selection on subsequent risk predictions.To assess differences between these approaches, we used a standardised input dataset comprised of telemetry‐point data from tagged bowhead whales, and satellite‐based Automated Identification System (AIS) data of spatial vessel movements covering the Davis‐Baffin Arctic Marine Area. We applied this data to eight different, previously published analyses for deriving areas of vessel risk.We found that the choice of risk mapping approach affected the location, and total area, identified as 'high risk', and that more computationally complex approaches did not necessarily equate to different predictions. There was considerable variation in the total area of 'high risk' predicted within each map (range = 20–42,246 km2).Synthesis and Applications. The results underscore the importance of methodological transparency, informed data selection and careful interpretation when predicting collision risk. We provide practical recommendations for enhancing transparency when predicting risk, and discuss choice of approach suitable for different situations or management applications. The physical demands of elite soccer match play have traditionally been measured using aggregated whole‐match metrics. However, match play is increasingly considered as distinct phases of play, although the influence of phase of play on match physical demands remains largely unknown. This study compared physical intensity, acceleration and deceleration demands, between phases of play and according to playing position. The duration of each match from a major European league (n = 1083) was divided into one of five reciprocal phases (for the in‐/out‐of‐possession team) using event and tracking data: build‐up/high‐block, progression/mid‐block, chance creation/low‐block, fast attack/fast defence, or attacking transition/defensive transition. Player tracking data were used to calculate physical intensity as the rate of distance covered (m⋅min−1) in total and within five speed categories, and the proportion of time spent accelerating and decelerating (>2 m s−2) during each phase of play. Rate of distance covered in total differed markedly with phase of play; fast attack 35%–53% greater, and fast defence 33%–50% greater, than other in‐/out‐of‐possession phases respectively, and these effects were amplified for the rate of distance covered at higher speeds (e.g., sprinting ≥4‐fold differences between phases). Match phase also affected the proportion of time spent accelerating and decelerating (highest for fast attack and chance creation, respectively), especially when in‐possession for forwards and when out‐of‐possession for defenders (p < 0.001). Phase of play had a large effect on the physical intensity of match play, particularly rates of distance covered at higher speeds, as well as the acceleration and deceleration demands, and in a position specific manner. Highlights: Despite elite soccer match play being increasingly considered as distinct phases of play, the effect of phase on physical metrics is largely unknown. This analysis of 1083 matches of a major European league found rates of distance covered in total, as an index of physical intensity, differed markedly (by >50%) according to phase, with even more pronounced effects on the rates of distance covered at higher speeds (e.g., sprinting >4‐fold greater for fast attack and fast defence than some phases).Playing position also had a pronounced interaction with phase of play; fast attack (forwards) and fast defence (midfielders and defenders) phases involving considerably greater physical intensities. Moreover, phase of play also had a large effect on the proportion of time spent accelerating and decelerating, most notably when in‐possession for forwards and when out‐of‐possession for defenders.Thus, the present study is the first to comprehensively divide the entire duration of match play into distinct phases using event and tracking data, demonstrating that match physical demands during elite soccer match play are extensively effected by match phase, and in a position specific manner. Unaccustomed eccentric exercise (EE) is protective against muscle damage following a subsequent bout of similar exercise. One hypothesis suggests the existence of an alteration in motor unit (MU) behaviour during the second bout, which might contribute to the adaptive response. Accordingly, the present study investigated MU changes during repeated bouts of EE. During two bouts of exercise where maximal lengthening dorsiflexion (10 repetitions × 10 sets) was performed 3 weeks apart, maximal voluntary isometric torque (MVIC) and MU behaviour (quantified using high‐density electromyography; HDsEMG) were measured at baseline, during (after set 5), and post‐EE. The HDsEMG signals were decomposed into individual MU discharge timings, and a subset were tracked across each time point. MVIC was reduced similarly in both bouts post‐EE (Δ27 vs. 23%, P = 0.144), with a comparable amount of total work performed (∼1,300 J; P = 0.905). In total, 1,754 MUs were identified and the decline in MVIC was accompanied by a stepwise increase in discharge rate (∼13%; P < 0.001). A decrease in relative recruitment was found immediately after EE in Bout 1 versus baseline (∼16%; P < 0.01), along with reductions in derecruitment thresholds immediately after EE in Bout 2. The coefficient of variation of inter‐spike intervals was lower in Bout 2 (∼15%; P < 0.001). Our data provide new information regarding a change in MU behaviour during the performance of a repeated bout of EE. Importantly, such changes in MU behaviour might contribute, at least in part, to the repeated bout phenomenon. To assess reticulospinal tract excitability, high‐intensity transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has been used to elicit ipsilateral motor‐evoked potentials (iMEPs). However, there is no consensus on robust and valid methods for use in human studies. The present study proposes a standardized method for eliciting and analysing iMEPs in the biceps brachii. Twenty‐four healthy young adults participated in this study. Electromyography (EMG) electrodes recorded contralateral MEPs (cMEPs) from the right and iMEPs from the left biceps brachii. A dynamic preacher curl task was used with ~15% of the subject's one‐repetition maximum load. The protocol included maximal compound action potential (M‐max) determination of the right biceps brachii muscle, TMS hotspot determination, and four sets of five repetitions where 100% stimulator output was delivered at an elbow angle of 110° of flexion. We normalized cMEP amplitude by M‐max (% M‐max) and iMEP by cMEP amplitude ratio (ICAR). Clear iMEPs above background EMG were observed in 21 subjects (88%, ICAR =.31 ±.19). Good‐to‐excellent agreement (intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC] =.795–1.000) and low bias (.01–.08 mV and.60–1.11 ms) were demonstrated when comparing two different analysis methods (i.e. fixed time‐window vs. manual onset detection) to determine the cMEP and iMEP amplitude and latency, respectively. Most subjects demonstrated clear iMEPs above background EMG triggered at a pre‐determined joint angle during a light‐load dynamic preacher curl exercise. Similar results were obtained when comparing a single‐trial manual identification of iMEP and a semi‐automated time‐window data analysis approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Disaster victim identification (DVI) refers to the forensic identification of unknown individuals following a mass disaster event. Human dental structures can contain viable DNA sources when other soft tissues are compromised. However, labor‐intensive sample preparation performed by extensively trained personnel is needed to expose the nuclear material for traditional forensic DNA workflows. With this in mind, we evaluated two simplified sample preparation protocols for processing tooth samples using either a conventional forensic DNA workflow or the Applied Biosystems® RapidHIT™ ID instrument. Briefly, sample sets for both protocols included 10 deciduous teeth that were cleaned prior to either fragmentation with a claw hammer (for RapidHIT™ ID processing) or fine‐powder pulverization with a consumer‐grade coffee grinder (for traditional workflows). The average percentage of expected STR alleles that were detected above analytical threshold for these tooth samples were comparable between methods: RapidHIT™ ID = 99.0% and GlobalFiler™ = 99.8%. Average intralocus heterozygote peak height ratios (PHRs) were comparable: RapidHIT™ ID = 0.80 and GlobalFiler™ = 0.86. Importantly, 9 of 10 samples analyzed via the RapidHIT™ ID required analyst review for flagged artifact peaks and quality issues. Across all profiles, 91% of alleles passed quality metrics for the RapidHIT™ workflow versus 100% for conventional GlobalFiler™ analysis. Collectively, these results suggest that quick, low‐tech tooth sample fragmentation followed by analysis with the RapidHIT™ ID instrument can produce complete STR profiles from aged tooth samples. Future studies should include larger samples sets, more challenging tooth samples, and further simplification of sample preparation to enable field‐forward, on‐scene DVI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and aims: Chronic non‐cancer pain (CNCP) is one of the most common causes of disability globally. Opioid prescribing to treat CNCP remains widespread, despite limited evidence of long‐term clinical benefit and evidence of harm such as problematic pharmaceutical opioid use (POU) and overdose. The study aimed to measure the prevalence of POU in CNCP patients treated with opioid analgesics. Method: A comprehensive systematic literature review and meta‐analysis was undertaken using MEDLINE, Embase and PsycINFO databases from inception to 27 January 2021. We included studies from all settings with participants aged ≥ 12 with non‐cancer pain of ≥ 3 months duration, treated with opioid analgesics. We excluded case–control studies, as they cannot be used to generate prevalence estimates. POU was defined using four categories: dependence and opioid use disorder (D&OUD), signs and symptoms of D&OUD (S&S), aberrant behaviour (AB) and at risk of D&OUD. We used a random‐effects multi‐level meta‐analytical model. We evaluated inconsistency using the I2 statistic and explored heterogeneity using subgroup analyses and meta‐regressions. Results: A total of 148 studies were included with > 4.3 million participants; 1% of studies were classified as high risk of bias. The pooled prevalence was 9.3% [95% confidence interval (CI) = 5.7–14.8%; I2 = 99.9%] for D&OUD, 29.6% (95% CI = 22.1–38.3%, I2 = 99.3%) for S&S and 22% (95% CI = 17.4–27.3%, I2 = 99.8%) for AB. The prevalence of those at risk of D&OUD was 12.4% (95% CI = 4.3–30.7%, I2 = 99.6%). Prevalence was affected by study setting, study design and diagnostic tool. Due to the high heterogeneity, the findings should be interpreted with caution. Conclusions: Problematic pharmaceutical opioid use appears to be common in chronic pain patients treated with opioid analgesics, with nearly one in 10 experiencing dependence and opioid use disorder, one in three showing signs and symptoms of dependence and opioid use disorder and one in five showing aberrant behaviour. Introduction Methods Results Conclusions Understanding the impact of environmental exposures on disease incidence is important for environmental guidelines, health services management, and advising patients. We aimed to assess the relationship between daily mean temperature and common pollutants with atrial fibrillation (AF) presentations to emergency departments (EDs).The study included consecutive adult patients presenting with AF to EDs from 1/1/2014 to 31/12/2020 with linkage to hospital and emergency discharge diagnosis data. A time series quasi‐Poisson regression with a distributed lag nonlinear model was fitted to assess the association between AF with mean air temperature and five common pollutants, overall and according to sex and region, with adjustment for season, day of the week, long‐term trend, and co‐pollutants.In 82 575 AF presentations to EDs during the study period, mean (standard deviations [SD]) (SD) age was 69.6 (SD 14.7) years and 50.7% were female. AF presentations were associated with elevated levels of Particulate Matter (PM) 2.5 (≥57.7 µg/m3) and nitrous dioxide (NO2) (≥16.5 parts per billion), but not mean air temperature or other pollutants (carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, or ozone). The attributable fraction of AF presentations relating to above optimal NO2 and PM 2.5 levels was 7.24% and 3.81% resulting in 854 and 450 annual excess AF presentations, respectively.High levels of NO2 and PM 2.5 are associated with increased risk of AF presentations to EDs. These findings have important implications for environmental policies and advice to patients susceptible to AF presentations to EDs, especially in regions with higher baseline levels of PM 2.5 or NO2. A significantly associated single‐nucleotide polymorphism was genotyped in a larger group of OM‐affected and control Cairn Terriers. The coding and splice‐site regions of genes mapping within the confidence interval were sequenced.A ~9.2 Mb region of chromosome 11 was significantly associated with OM. Haplotype analysis narrowed the region to 1.49 Mb. Genotyping of a SNP within the region showed 86% of OM‐affected dogs were homozygous or heterozygous for the risk allele, whereas 78% of unaffected dogs were homozygous for the nonrisk allele. Sequencing of the coding regions and splice sites of four genes (c9orf72, IFNK, the 5′ end of MOB3B, and the 3′ end of LINGO2) and of a microRNA (MIR876) did not detect any genetic variants unique to OM‐affected dogs.OM in Cairn Terriers maps to a 1.49 Mb region of chromosome 11. This accounts for 86% of OM cases in our DNA bank. A second locus may account for the OM phenotype in the remaining 14% of cases. Sequencing of coding regions and splice sites of positional candidate genes and a microRNA did not reveal any genetic variants unique to affected dogs. Fracture non‐union occurs due to various factors, leading to the development of potentially substantial bone defects. While autograft and allograft are the current gold standards for non‐union fractures, challenges related to availability and immune rejection highlight the need for improved treatments. A strategy in bone tissue engineering is to harness growth factors to induce an effect on cells to change their phenotype, behavior and initiate signaling pathways which lead to increased matrix deposition and tissue formation. Bone morphogenetic protein‐2 (BMP‐2) is a potent osteogenic growth factor however, given its rapid clearance time in vivo, there is a specific therapeutic window for efficacy while avoiding potential deleterious side‐effects. It is demonstrated that a Laponite nanoclay coating on a 3D printable and bioresorbable poly(caprolactone) trimethacrylate‐based resin enables binding of BMP‐2, decreases the rate of release, enabling reduced concentrations to be used while enhancing osteoinduction in both in vitro and in vivo models. Introduction: Restrictive practice use in residential aged care homes internationally is unacceptably high. Although policies and legislation mandate the reduction or elimination of restrictive practices, there remains a gap in knowledge regarding strategies that have been effective in achieving a sustained reduction in restraint use. There is an urgent need to identify effective and feasible interventions that aged care staff can implement in everyday practice to reduce restraint use. Safewards is an evidence‐based programme that has demonstrated effectiveness in reducing conflict and restrictive practice use in inpatient psychiatric settings and has the potential to address the issue of restraint use in aged care homes. This study aims to evaluate the feasibility of Safewards in reducing restrictive practices in residential aged care homes. Methods: This pilot and feasibility study will adopt a mixed methods process and outcomes evaluation. Safewards will be implemented in two Australian residential aged care homes. The Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation and Maintenance framework will be used to evaluate implementation outcomes. Additionally, the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research will be used to guide qualitative data collection (including semi‐structured interviews with residents/family members, aged care leaders and staff) and explain the facilitators and barriers to effective implementation. Conclusion: This study will provide pilot evidence on the feasibility of the Safewards programme in residential aged care homes. Understanding the processes and adaptations for implementing and evaluating Safewards in residential aged care will inform a future trial in aged care to assess its effectiveness. More broadly, the findings will support the implementation of an international aged care policy of reducing restrictive practices in residential aged care. Premise: The wheat tribe, Triticeae, has been the subject of molecular phylogenetic analyses for nearly three decades, and extensive phylogenetic conflict has been apparent from the earliest comparisons among DNA‐based data sets. While most previous analyses focused primarily on nuclear vs. chloroplast DNA conflict, the present analysis provides a broader picture of conflict among nuclear loci throughout the tribe. Methods: Exon data were generated from over 1000 nuclear loci using targeted sequence capture with custom baits, and nearly complete chloroplast genome sequences were recovered. Phylogenetic conflict was assessed among the trees from the chloroplast genomes, the concatenated nuclear loci, and a series of nuclear‐locus subsets guided by Hordeum chromosome gene maps. Results: At the intergeneric level, the analyses collectively revealed a few broadly consistent relationships. However, the prevailing pattern was one of extensive phylogenetic conflict throughout the tribe, among both deep and shallow branches, and with the extent of the conflict varying among data subsets. Conclusions: The results suggest continual introgression or lineage sorting within and among the named lineages of the Triticeae, shaping both deep and shallow relationships in the tribe. The development of light‐responsive molecular tools enables spatiotemporal control of biochemical processes with superior precision. Amongst these molecular tools, photolabile caging groups are employed to prevent critical binding interactions between a bioactive molecule and its corresponding target. Only upon irradiation with light, the bioactive is released in its 'active' form and is now readily available to bind to its target. Coumarin‐derived caging groups constitute one of the most popular classes of photolabile protecting groups, due to their facile synthetic accessibility, ease of tuning photophysical properties via structural modification and rapid photolysis reactions. Herein, we highlight the recent progress made on the development of coumarin‐derived caging groups, in which the red‐shifting of absorption spectra, improving aqueous solubility and tailoring sub‐cellular localisation has been of particular interest. Plants and mycorrhizal fungi form mutualistic relationships that affect how resources flow between organisms and within ecosystems. Common mycorrhizal networks (CMNs) could facilitate preferential transfer of carbon and limiting nutrients, but this remains difficult to predict. Do CMNs favour fungal resource acquisition at the expense of plant resource demands (a fungi‐centric view), or are they passive channels through which plants regulate resource fluxes (a plant‐centric view)?We used stable isotope tracers (13CO2 and 15NH3), plant traits, and mycorrhizal DNA to quantify above‐ and below‐ground carbon and nitrogen transfer between 18 plant species along a 520‐km latitudinal gradient in the Pacific Northwest, USA.Plant functional type and tissue stoichiometry were the most important predictors of interspecific resource transfer. Of 'donor' plants, 98% were 13C‐enriched, but we detected transfer in only 2% of 'receiver' plants. However, all donors were 15N‐enriched and we detected transfer in 81% of receivers. Nitrogen was preferentially transferred to annuals (0.26 ± 0.50 mg N per g leaf mass) compared with perennials (0.13 ± 0.30 mg N per g leaf mass). This corresponded with tissue stoichiometry differences.Synthesis Our findings suggest that plants and fungi that are located closer together in space and with stronger demand for resources over time are more likely to receive larger amounts of those limiting resources. Climate change poses new challenges to Arctic marine mammals, with increasing vessel traffic and associated underwater noise pollution emerging as significant threats. The bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus), an endemic Arctic cetacean, faces these new threats. The Eastern Canada‐West Greenland (ECWG) bowhead whale population migrates through areas with the highest levels of vessel traffic in the Canadian Arctic. Here, we document the spatial and temporal overlap between 36 satellite‐tagged ECWG bowhead whales and vessels equipped with Automatic Identification System (AIS) transponders during 2012–2017. We report 1,145 instances where vessels were within 125 km of a tagged whale, with 306 occurrences within distances ≤50 km. Overlap between vessels and tagged bowhead whales was quantified monthly within years to investigate individual whale encounter rates. Results indicate that ECWG bowhead whales encounter the majority (79%) of vessels annually during August–October, with the highest number of encounters (42%) observed in September. Encounter rates ranged from 0.25 to 0.51 vessels encountered per day per whale during August–October compared to <0.07 vessels per day in all other months in this study. Premise: Vascular epiphytes of tropical montane cloud forests are vulnerable to climate change, particularly as cloud bases elevate and reduce atmospheric inputs to the system. However, studies have generally focused on epiphytes in contiguous forests, with little research being done on epiphytes on isolated pasture trees. We investigated water relations of pasture‐tree epiphytes at three sites located below and above the elevation of the average cloud base in Monteverde, Costa Rica. Methods: We measured sap velocity and four microclimate variables in both the dry and wet season of 2018. We also measured functional traits, including pressure volume (PV) curves, predawn/midday water potential, and various lab‐based water relations traits. We used linear mixed models to assess the correlation between microclimate and sap velocity in both seasons and ANOVA to assess the variation in PV curve and water potential variables. Results: The turgor loss point generally increased from the wettest to driest site. However, this trend was driven primarily by the increasing prevalence of leaf succulence at drier sites. Microclimatic variables correlated strongly with sap velocity in the wet season, but low soil moisture availability caused this correlation to break down during the dry season. Conclusions: Our results emphasize the vulnerability of cloud forest epiphytes to rising cloud bases. This vulnerability may be more severe in pasture trees that lack the potential buffer of surrounding forest, but additional research that directly compares the canopy microclimate conditions between forest and pasture trees is needed to confirm this possibility. Tau is a microtubule‐associated protein implicated in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other neurodegenerative disorders termed tauopathies. Pathological, aggregated forms of tau form neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs), impairing its ability to stabilize microtubules and promoting neurotoxicity. Indeed, NFTs correlate with neuronal loss and cognitive impairment. Hyperphosphorylation of tau is seen in all tauopathies and mirrors disease progression, suggesting an essential role in pathogenesis. However, hyperphosphorylation remains a generic and ill‐defined term, obscuring the functional importance of specific sites in different physiological or pathological settings. Here, we focused on global mapping of tau phosphorylation specifically during conditions of neuronal hyperexcitation. Hyperexcitation is a property of AD and other tauopathies linked to human cognitive deficits and increased risk of developing seizures and epilepsy. Moreover, hyperexcitation promotes extracellular secretion and trans‐synaptic propagation of tau. Using unbiased mass spectrometry, we identified a novel phosphorylation signature in the C‐terminal domain of tau detectable only during neuronal hyperactivity in primary cultured rat hippocampal neurons. These sites influenced tau localization to dendrites as well as the size of excitatory postsynaptic sites. These results demonstrate novel physiological tau functions at synapses and the utility of comprehensive analysis of tau phosphorylation during specific signaling contexts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Amorphous solid‐state electrolytes (SSEs) play a pivotal role as fundamental components within all‐solid‐state lithium batteries, yet their understanding lags behind that of crystalline materials. In this work, a novel amorphous SSE 5Li2S‐3SiS2 (mol %) with a high ionic conductivity of 1.2 mS cm−1 is first reported. The silicon and sulfur atoms in the edge‐sharing Si2S64− are less attracted to lithium compared to the SiS44− anion, which is expected to facilitate the lithium ions conduction in SSEs. More importantly, the relationship between the material properties and local structure in the amorphous thiosilicate SSEs is revealed, particularly highlighting the desirable edge‐sharing local structure. The Si2S64− presents better stability with Li metal. Frontal polymerization is a process in which a localized reaction zone propagates through the coupling of thermal transport and the Arrhenius kinetics of exothermic polymerization. Most initiators that have been used produce volatile by‐products, which create bubbles and voids. Tetraalkyl ammonium persulfates have been used but these require synthesis and do not have long shelf lives. A charge transfer complex (CTC) composed of an iodonium salt, and a phosphine compound has been identified as a gas‐free initiator for free‐radical thermal frontal polymerization. This CTC has 4‐(dimethylamino)phenyldiphenly phophine (DMAPDP) as the donor and p‐(octyloxyphenyl)phenyliodonium hexafluoroantimonate as the acceptor (IOC‐8). The CTC was tested with several acrylates, and all were found to support bubble‐free fronts. We determined the CTC mole ratio for some monomers at which the front velocity reaches a plateau. The Hippo tumor suppressor pathway controls transcription by regulating nuclear abundance of YAP and TAZ, which activate transcription with the TEAD1-TEAD4 DNA-binding proteins. Recently, several small-molecule inhibitors of YAP and TEADs have been reported, with some entering clinical trials for different cancers with Hippo pathway deregulation, most notably, mesothelioma. Using genome-wide CRISPR/Cas9 screens we reveal that mutations in genes from the Hippo, MAPK, and JAK-STAT signaling pathways all modulate the response of mesothelioma cell lines to TEAD palmitoylation inhibitors. By exploring gene expression programs of mutant cells, we find that MAPK pathway hyperactivation confers resistance to TEAD inhibition by reinstating expression of a subset of YAP/TAZ target genes. Consistent with this, combined inhibition of TEAD and the MAPK kinase MEK, synergistically blocks proliferation of multiple mesothelioma and lung cancer cell lines and more potently reduces the growth of patient-derived lung cancer xenografts in vivo. Collectively, we reveal mechanisms by which cells can overcome small-molecule inhibition of TEAD palmitoylation and potential strategies to enhance the anti-tumor activity of emerging Hippo pathway targeted therapies. Fungal traits can provide a mechanistic understanding of how wood‐inhabiting fungi interact with their environment and how that influences community assembly in deadwood. However, fungal trait exploration is relatively new and almost no studies measure fungal traits in their environment.In this study we tested species‐ and trait‐environment relationships in reproducing fungal communities inhabiting 571 Norway spruce (Picea abies) logs in 55 isolated forest patches (0.1–9.9 ha) of different naturalness types, located in Northern boreal Sweden. The studied patches were (1) semi‐natural set‐aside patches within highly managed landscapes, or (2) old‐growth natural patches located in an unmanaged landscape. We tested species and trait relationships to deadwood substrate and forest patch variables. We measured mean fruit body size and density for each of the 19 species within communities.Traits assembled in relation to log decay stage and forest patch naturalness, illustrating the important role of deterministic environmental filtering in shaping reproducing wood‐inhabiting fungal communities. Early decay stage communities had larger, less dense, annual fruiting bodies of half‐resupinate type and were more often white‐rot fungi. Species rich mid‐decay stage communities had mixed trait assemblages with more long lived perennial fruit bodies of intermediate size, and both brown‐ and white‐rot fungi equally represented. Finally, late decay stage communities had smaller, denser and perennial fruit bodies, more often of the brown‐rot type.The relationships between the studied traits and decay stages were similar in both set‐aside and natural patches. However, set‐aside semi‐natural patches in highly managed landscapes more frequently supported species with smaller, perennial and resupinate fruit bodies compared to natural patches in an unmanaged landscape.Synthesis. We found that log decay stage was the primary driver of fungal community assembly of species and traits in isolated forest patches. Our results suggest that decay stage filters four reproduction traits (fruit body density, size, lifespan and type) and one resource‐use trait (white or brown rot). Our results highlights, for the first time, that communities with diverse fungal reproductive traits are maintained foremost across all deadwood decay stages under different forest naturalness conditions. Patellar tendinopathy (PT) typically affects jumping‐sport athletes with functional impairments frequently observed. Alterations to the functional organization of corticomotor neurons within the motor cortex that project to working muscles are evident in some musculoskeletal conditions and linked to functional impairments. We aimed to determine if functional organization of corticomotor neuron projections differs between athletes with PT and asymptomatic controls, and if organization is associated with neuromuscular control. We used a cross‐sectional design, and the setting was Monash Biomedical Imaging. Basketball and volleyball athletes with (n = 8) and without PT (n = 8) completed knee extension and ankle dorsiflexion force matching tasks while undergoing fMRI. We determined functional organization via identification of the location of peak corticomotor neuron activation during respective tasks (expressed in X, Y, and Z coordinates) and calculated force matching accuracy for both tasks to quantify neuromuscular control. We observed significant interactions between group and coordinate plane for functional organization of corticomotor projections to knee extensors (p < 0.001) and ankle dorsiflexors (p = 0.016). Compared to controls, PT group peak corticomotor activation during the knee extension task was 9.6 mm medial (p < 0.001) and 5.2 mm posterior (p = 0.036), and during the ankle dorsiflexion task 8.2 mm inferior (p = 0.024). In the PT group, more posterior Y coordinate peak activation location during the knee extension task was associated with greater task accuracy (r = 0.749, p = 0.034). Functional organization of corticomotor neurons differed in jumping athletes with PT compared to controls. Links between functional organization and neuromuscular control in the PT group suggest organizational differences may be relevant to knee extension neuromuscular control preservation. The StartReact test, increasingly popular for assessing cortico‐reticular functioning, is a valid method to influence the firing of reticulospinal tract neurons noninvasively. However, there remains limited evidence on how different stimuli employed in the StartReact test impact motor output in humans. The present study tested elbow flexor responses of 33 adults (aged 26–48 years) to visual stimuli only (LED light), audio‐visual (80 dB) stimuli, and startle‐inducing audio‐visual (120 dB) stimuli sitting with the arm supinated in an electromechanical dynamometer. Surface electromyogram (EMG) recorded muscle activity from the right biceps brachii muscle. Participants were presented with 20 stimuli for each of the three conditions in pseudorandom order with interstimulus intervals of ~8 s. Reaction times were calculated from the stimulus trigger to the initial rise in the EMG signal above 7 × SD from baseline. Rate of torque development (RTD) and EMG signals were recorded throughout and analyzed over their initial 50 ms and 100 ms time‐windows. Reaction times were reduced from visual (169 ± 23) to audio‐visual (140 ± 23) and further reduced to startle‐inducing audio‐visual stimuli (108 ± 19, p < 0.001). While RTD and EMG were consistently greatest following startle‐inducing stimuli (p < 0.001), they were also enhanced following all audio‐visual stimuli over 100 ms (p < 0.05). It appears that startle‐inducing audio‐visual stimuli result in shorter reaction times, increased RTD, and enhanced muscle activity within the initial 50 ms, likely from subcortical upregulation. However, the 100 ms time‐window suggests cortical upregulation following all audio‐visual stimuli considering the longer transmission times. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Insular evolution on archipelagos generates a significant proportion of global biodiversity, yet islands are among the ecosystems most sensitive to accelerating anthropogenic disturbance, introductions of non‐native species, and emerging pathogens, among other conservation challenges. The Alexander and Haida Gwaii archipelagos along North America's North Pacific Coast support a disproportionate number of endemic taxa compared to other high‐latitude terrestrial ecosystems. In this region, endemics in Canada are explicitly protected, but in the United States, endemics have been operationally ignored. We reviewed regional research on terrestrial mammals and endemics from 2000–2022 to guide wildlife management. Elevated regional endemism is due to a combination of deep and shallow temporal processes (i.e., long‐term refugial isolation vs. recent colonization). With adequate sampling, genomic analyses are well‐suited to identifying nuanced patterns of divergence and endemism, thereby facilitating a deeper understanding of regional diversity. We identified 18 mammalian endemics in Southeast Alaska, USA, at varying taxonomic scales, but research effort has significant taxonomic biases and sampling infrastructure remains inadequate. Of the 66 terrestrial and aquatic mammal species in Southeast Alaska, only 55% are represented by ≥10 archived samples over the last 2 decades. Across taxa, major spatial and temporal sampling gaps limit interpretations of wildlife responses to changing environmental conditions. The Tongass National Forest is spread across an island archipelago, and climate change is projected to have disproportionate impacts on island endemics worldwide. In this case, the United States Forest Service is not closely monitoring endemic taxa, as was required by the Tongass Land Management Plan in 1997. Our review underscores a need for increased consideration of how endemism can be incorporated into land and wildlife management across the Alexander Archipelago. Moving forward, we encourage state and federal agencies, Indigenous communities, and international collaborators to continue to partner with natural history biorepositories to ensure strategic wildlife sampling infrastructure is built and made accessible to the broader scientific community as part of the land management process. Aim: To investigate what happens to cross‐sectionally identified root‐filled teeth over a 6‐year period, regardless of the time that elapsed since primary root canal treatment, in a cohort of adult patients regularly attending a Public Dental Service. A secondary aim was to investigate how the cumulative events affecting root‐filled teeth over the same time were associated with variables obtained from a baseline examination. Methodology: Adult patients with ≥1 previously root‐filled tooth and regularly attending the Public Dental Service in Örebro County were enrolled for study participation in 2015. General dental practitioners examined all identified root‐filled teeth in this cohort at baseline using a standardized protocol and were also responsible for further decision‐making and treatments. After six years, information on events of the root‐filled teeth was collected from dental records. The highest rating (most invasive treatment) on a 5‐point ordinal scale was used in the analyses. Regression analyses with stepwise selection were performed for associations between patient‐ and tooth‐related factors and events. Results: A total of 445 patients with 1007 root‐filled teeth were followed the entire observation time. Twenty (2.0%) of the root‐filled teeth had endodontic retreatment and 150 (14.9%) were extracted over six years. Among teeth with periapical radiolucency or pain, the majority did not undergo retreatment or extraction; however, the multivariate analysis demonstrated that retreatment or extraction was associated with baseline recordings of teeth with periapical radiolucency (p <.0001), tenderness to percussion (p <.0001), and poor coronal restoration (p <.0001). Conclusions: This study corroborates the notion that in general dentistry, root‐filled teeth with radiological signs of apical disease often remain untreated over time. Furthermore, it also reveals that root‐filled teeth presenting with mild pain do not necessarily receive any intervention. However, teeth with baseline signs of apical periodontitis, pain, or inadequate coronal restoration were more likely to have received intervention during the six‐year period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Whole microorganisms are rarely preserved in the fossil record but actively silicifying environments like hot springs provide an opportunity for microbial preservation, making silicifying environments critical for the study of microbial life through time on Earth and possibly other planetary bodies. Yet, the changes that biosignatures may undergo through lithification and burial remain unconstrained. At Steep Cone Geyser in Yellowstone National Park, we collected microbial material from (1) the living system across the active outflows, (2) the silicified areas adjacent to flows, and (3) lithified and buried material to assess the preservation of biosignatures and their changes across the lithification transect. Five biofabrics, built predominantly by CyanobacteriaGeitlerinema, Pseudanabaenaceae, and Leptolyngbya with some filamentous anoxygenic phototrophs contributions, were identified and tracked from the living system through the process of silicification/lithification. In the living systems, δ30Si values decrease from +0.13‰ in surficial waters to −2‰ in biomat samples, indicating a kinetic isotope effect potentially induced by increased association with actively growing biofabrics. The fatty acids C16:1 and iso‐C14:0 and the hydrocarbon C17:0 were disentangled from confounding signals and determined to be reliable lipid biosignatures for living biofabric builders and tenant microorganisms. Builder and tenant microbial biosignatures were linked to specific Cyanobacteria, anoxygenic phototrophs, and heterotrophs, which are prominent members of the living communities. Upon lithification and burial, silicon isotopes of silicified biomass began to re‐equilibrate, increasing from δ30Si −2‰ in living biomats to −0.55‰ in lithified samples. Active endolithic microbial communities were identified in lithified samples and were dominated by Cyanobacteria, heterotrophic bacteria, and fungi. Results indicate that distinct microbial communities build and inhabit silicified biofabrics through time and that microbial biosignatures shift over the course of lithification. These findings improve our understanding of how microbial communities silicify, the biomarkers they retain, and transitionary impacts that may occur through lithification and burial. Terrestrial water fluxes are substantially mediated by vegetation, while the distribution, growth, health, and mortality of plants are strongly influenced by the availability of water. These interactions, playing out across multiple spatial and temporal scales, link the disciplines of plant ecophysiology and ecohydrology. Despite this connection, the disciplines have provided complementary, but largely independent, perspectives on the soil‐plant‐atmosphere continuum since their crystallization as modern scientific disciplines in the late 20th century. This review traces the development of the two disciplines, from their respective origins in engineering and ecology, their largely independent growth and maturation, and the eventual development of common conceptual and quantitative frameworks. This common ground has allowed explicit coupling of the disciplines to better understand plant function. Case studies both illuminate the limitations of the disciplines working in isolation, and reveal the exciting possibilities created by consilience between the disciplines. The histories of the two disciplines suggest opportunities for new advances will arise from sharing methodologies, working across multiple levels of complexity, and leveraging new observational technologies. Practically, these exchanges can be supported by creating shared scientific spaces. This review argues that consilience and collaboration are essential for robust and evidence‐based predictions and policy responses under global change. Summary statement: Ecophysiology and ecohydrology share an interest in plant–water interactions but have largely developed and operated along distinct paths. Introduction: Physical activity (PA) during pregnancy has numerous benefits, which may be mediated via effects on the immune system. However, supportive evidence is inconsistent and is mainly from studies in high‐risk groups. We estimated the effect of PA during pregnancy on systemic inflammatory markers and cytokines in mothers recruited in the Barwon infant study. Material and Methods: The Barwon infant study is a prebirth cohort of 1064 mothers recruited in the Barwon Region of Victoria, Australia. Participants reported their previous week's PA at their 28‐week antenatal appointment using the International PA Questionnaire. Women were grouped into low, moderate, and high PA categories based on daily duration and weekly frequency of walking, moderate‐ or vigorous‐intensity PA. Women reporting moderate levels of PA, consistent with current recommendations, served as the comparison group. Markers of systemic inflammation, high‐sensitivity C‐reactive protein (hsCRP), glycoprotein acetyls (GlycA), and 17 cytokines were measured at 28 weeks gestation and log transformed as appropriate. Regression analyses adjusted for maternal smoking, gestational diabetes mellitus, prepregnancy BMI, and household size were performed. Results: Compared to women in the moderate group (n = 371, 42%), women reporting low PA (n = 436, 50%) had 10.1% higher hsCRP (95% CI (3.7% to 16.6%), p < 0.01) while women in high PA (n = 76, 9%) had a 14% higher hsCRP (95% CI (3.1% to 24.8%), p = 0.01). Women in the high PA category had higher interleukin (IL)‐4 (q = 0.03) and IL‐9 (q = 0.03) levels compared to those in moderate category. Each vigorous MET minute/week was associated with lower GlycA (β = −0.004, 95% CI (−0.044 to 0.035); p = 0.03). Conclusions: Low and high PA are each associated with higher hsCRP than moderate PA, suggesting that undertaking the recommended moderate PA during pregnancy decreases systemic inflammation. High PA affects T cell‐associated cytokines during pregnancy. Evidence from our study suggests that PA can modulate the immune responses during pregnancy. Melanosomal pH is important for the synthesis of melanin as the rate‐limiting enzyme, tyrosinase, is very pH‐sensitive. The soluble adenylyl cyclase (sAC) signaling pathway was recently identified as a regulator of melanosomal pH in melanocytes; however, the melanosomal proteins critical for sAC‐dependent regulation of melanosomal pH were undefined. We now systematically examine four well‐characterized melanosomal membrane proteins to determine whether any of them are required for sAC‐dependent regulation of melanosomal pH. We find that OA1, OCA2, and SLC45A2 are dispensable for sAC‐dependent regulation of melanosomal pH. In contrast, TPC2 activity is required for sAC‐dependent regulation of melanosomal pH and melanin synthesis. In addition, activation of TPC2 by NAADP‐AM rescues melanosomal pH alkalinization and reduces melanin synthesis following pharmacologic or genetic inhibition of sAC signaling. We developed a robust InSAR processing strategy that can effectively mitigate severe decorrelation noise in a large volume of InSAR data. We mapped the average land subsidence rate (2017–2020) over the 131,572 km2 Upper Texas and Louisiana coasts from Sentinel‐1 data, with ∼2 mm/yr accuracy based on independent GPS and tide gauge validation at 189 locations. The improved InSAR observations reveal widespread subsidence that was previously undetected in coastal wetlands and rural areas with small communities. Our InSAR surface deformation map is at the spatial scale that overlaps with the scale of hydrodynamic model grids. This allows us to integrate InSAR observations into operational storm surge models to analyze future flooding risks due to relative sea level change. We found that these subtle millimeter‐to‐centimeter subsidence features can substantially increase hurricane‐induced inundation, and passive flood mapping (known as the "bathtub" approach) can lead to inaccurate flood risk predictions. Plain Language Summary: The analysis of future storm surge risks along the Gulf Coast often focuses only on projected sea level rise estimates due to the lack of spatially dense land subsidence data. Here we show advances in spaceborne Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) techniques can enable the retrieval of coastal subsidence patterns over a 131,572 km2 region along the Gulf Coast of the United States, a challenging terrain for InSAR analysis due to the presence of dense vegetation coverage. Our results reveal widespread subsidence features due to oil and gas production, groundwater pumping, and wetland degradation that were previously undetected. Physics‐based storm surge modeling shows that the detected subtle millimeter‐to‐centimeter land subsidence can substantially elevate flood water depth and flood extent. We demonstrate that the relationship between coastal subsidence and flood depth increase is complex, and communities vulnerable to future flood risk are highly variable along the Gulf Coast of the United States. Aim: Flower traits are critical to the mutualistic networks that underpin ecosystem function. However, the broad‐scale drivers of flower traits are unclear. Using the megadiverse islands of Malesia, we test three hypotheses: (1) Flower size, openness and colourfulness (i.e. the trend from white to colourful flowers) will decrease with increasing temperature, but not with increasing precipitation seasonality. (2) Flower size, openness and colourfulness will increase with island area, and decrease with isolation. (3) Models parameterised by climate, rather than non‐climatic island characteristics will have the greatest predictive capacity as climate affects both pollinator communities and energetic/physiological constraints upon flower traits. Location: Fourteen Malesian islands. Taxon: Angiosperms. Methods: We applied Bayesian phylogenetic models of occurrence for >2500 species in 400 m elevation bands, across islands, as a function of flower trait interactions with either climatic variables or islands characteristics. We compare predictive capacity of models based on climate versus island characteristics using Leave One Out‐Cross Validation. Results: All six flower traits examined varied with at least temperature, precipitation seasonality, island area and isolation. Flowers are larger in cold environments. The lowland tropics are mostly inhabited by white flowered species. At cold high elevations, red and pink flowered species are more frequent whereas green and purple flowered species increase in the drought‐prone seasonally dry tropics. Flower openness declined with precipitation seasonality and increased with isolation. Models parameterised by climate performed best for perianth length, red and white flowers, whereas pink flowers and flower openness were better predicted using island characteristics. Main Conclusions: There are relationships between flower traits and climatic gradients within Malesia. However, island characteristics have also left a legacy upon current flower trait distributions. Background and aims: Population‐level alcohol use data are available from high‐income countries, but limited research has been conducted in sub‐Saharan Africa. This systematic review and meta‐analysis aimed to summarize population‐level alcohol use in sub‐Saharan Africa. Method: Databases searched included PubMed, EMBASE, PsycINFO and AJOL, without language restrictions. Searches were also conducted in the Global Health Data Exchange (GHDx) and Google Scholar. Search terms encompassed 'substance' or 'substance‐related disorders' and 'prevalence' and 'sub‐Saharan Africa'. We included general population studies on alcohol use (including any use, high‐risk alcohol use and alcohol use disorders) from 2018 onwards. Prevalence data for alcohol use among sub‐Saharan African adolescents (10–17) and adults (18+) were extracted. Analyses included life‐time and past 12‐ and 6‐month alcohol use. Results: We included 141 papers. Among adolescents, the life‐time prevalence of alcohol use was 23.3% [95% confidence interval (CI) = 11.3–37.1%], 36.2% (CI = 18.4–56.1%) in the past year and 11.3% (CI = 4.5–20.4%) in the past 6 months. Among adolescents, 12‐month prevalence of alcohol use disorder and alcohol dependence were 7.7% (CI = 0.0–27.8%) and 4.1% (CI = 1.4–7.9%), respectively. Among adults, the life‐time prevalence of alcohol use was 34.9% (CI = 17.7–54.1%), 27.1% (CI = 5.0–56.4%) in the past year and 32.2% (CI = 19.8–46.0%) in the past 6 months. Among adults, the 12‐month prevalence of alcohol use disorder and alcohol dependence were 9.5% (CI = 0.0–30.4%) and 4.3% (CI = 0.8–9.8%), respectively. The highest weighted life‐time prevalence of alcohol use, 86.4%, was reported in Tanzania among adults. The highest weighted past 6‐month prevalence of alcohol use, 80.6%, was found in Zambia among adolescents. Conclusion: Alcohol use patterns vary across countries and subregions within sub‐Saharan Africa, and comprehensive population‐level data on alcohol use remain scarce in numerous sub‐Saharan African countries. Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative condition that pathognomonically involves the death of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta, resulting in a myriad of motor and nonmotor symptoms. Given the insurmountable burden of this disease on the population and healthcare system, significant efforts have been put forth toward generating disease modifying therapies. This class of treatments characteristically alters disease course, as opposed to current strategies that focus on managing symptoms. Previous literature has implicated the cell death pathway known as parthanatos in PD progression. Inhibition of this pathway by targeting poly (ADP)-ribose polymerase 1 (PARP1) prevents neurodegeneration in a model of idiopathic PD. However, PARP1 has a vast repertoire of functions within the body, increasing the probability of side effects with the long-term treatment likely necessary for clinically significant neuroprotection. Recent work culminated in the development of a novel agent targeting the macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) nuclease domain, also named parthanatos-associated apoptosis-inducing factor nuclease (PAAN). This nuclease activity specifically executes the terminal step in parthanatos. Parthanatos-associated apoptosis-inducing factor nuclease inhibitor-1 was neuroprotective in multiple preclinical mouse models of PD. European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) is a species of high commercial and recreational value, but it exhibits highly variable recruitment rates and has been subject to recent declines. Emergency management measures put in place to protect spawning stocks include the annual closure of commercial and recreational fisheries over a 2‐month, February–March, window. Whether this protection measure is having the desired outcome for this data‐poor species remains unclear. Otolith microstructural analyses (counts and widths of daily growth rings and check marks indicative of settlement) were used to estimate (1) spawn timing, (2) pelagic larval duration and settlement timing, (3) growth rate and condition, and (4) the otolith‐fish size relationship for juvenile European sea bass caught from two estuaries in Wales (Dwyryd, Y Foryd), located at the northern edge of the species range. We observed a significant mismatch between the timing of fisheries closures and the spawning, with 99.2% of recruits having been spawned after the fishery had reopened (back‐calculated median spawn date = May 5 ± 17 days SD), suggesting that the closure may be too early to adequately protect this population. Further, we present the first empirically derived estimates of pelagic larval duration for sea bass recruits settling in UK habitats, which showed a strong negative relationship with spawn date. Finally, we found significant differences in fish condition between the two estuaries, suggesting local variation in habitat quality. The results suggest that the timing of current fisheries closures may not be adequately protecting the spawners supplying these northernmost estuaries, which are likely to become increasingly important as sea bass distributions shift northward in our climate future. Climate refugia, areas where climate is expected to remain relatively stable, can offer a near‐term safe haven for species sensitive to warming temperatures and drought. Understanding the influence of temperature, moisture, and disturbance on sensitive species is critical during this time of rapid climate change. Coastal habitats can serve as important refugia. Many of these areas consist of working forestlands, and there is a growing recognition that conservation efforts worldwide must consider the habitat value of working lands, in addition to protected areas, to effectively manage large landscapes that support biodiversity. The sensitivity of forest bats to climate and habitat disturbance makes them a useful indicator taxon. We tested how microclimate and forest management influence habitat use for 13 species of insectivorous bats in a large climate refugium in a global biodiversity hotspot. We examined whether bat activity during the summer dry season is greater in forests where coastal fog provides moisture and more stable temperatures across both protected mature stands and those regularly logged. Acoustic monitoring was conducted at a landscape scale with 20 study sites, and generalized linear mixed models were used to examine the influence of habitat variables. Six species were positively associated with warmer nighttime temperature, and 5 species had a negative relationship with humidity or a positive relationship with climatic moisture deficit. Our results suggest that these mammals may have greater climate adaptive capacity than expected, and, for now, that habitat use may be more related to optimal foraging conditions than to avoidance of warming temperatures and drought. We also determined that 12 of the 13 regionally present bat species were regularly detected in commercial timberland stands. Because forest bats are highly mobile, forage over long distances, and frequently change roosts, the stewardship of working forests must be addressed to protect these species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Antarctica's unique marine ecosystems are threatened by the arrival of non‐native marine species on rafting ocean objects. The harsh environmental conditions in Antarctica prevent the establishment of many such species, but warming around the continent and the opening up of ice‐free regions may already be reducing these barriers. Although recent genomic work has revealed that rafts—potentially carrying diverse coastal passengers—reach Antarctica from sub‐Antarctic islands, Antarctica's vulnerability to incursions from Southern Hemisphere continents remains unknown. Here we use 0.1° global ocean model simulations to explore whether drift connections exist between more northern, temperate landmasses and the Antarctic coastline. We show that passively floating objects can drift to Antarctica not only from sub‐Antarctic islands, but also from continental locations north of the Subtropical Front including Australia, South Africa, South America and Zealandia. We find that the Antarctic Peninsula is the region at highest risk for non‐native species introductions arriving by natural oceanic dispersal, highlighting the vulnerability of this region, which is also at risk from introductions via ship traffic and rapid warming. The widespread connections with sub‐Antarctic and temperate landmasses, combined with an increasing abundance of marine anthropogenic rafting vectors, poses a growing risk to Antarctic marine ecosystems, especially as environmental conditions around Antarctica are projected to become more suitable for non‐native species in the future. Based on U‐Pb dating of zircon crystals and petrographic analysis, this study provides new insights into the paleogeographic and accretion evolution along SW Japan. Our data are consistent with an older submarine fan identified from drilling in the Shikoku Basin (Kyushu Fan ∼14.7–12.2 Ma), having a mixed sand provenance from the paleo‐Yangtze/Yellow rivers and the Shimanto Belt, and the younger Zenisu Fan (∼9.2–7.6 Ma), which is mainly sourced from the Shimanto Belt and the Izu‐Bonin/Honshu arc collision. Our results are in agreement with the hypothesis of very oblique subduction or strike‐slip motion between the northern Shikoku Basin and mainland Honshu from ∼12.2 to 9.2 Ma, after which essentially orthogonal subduction occurred after ∼8 Ma. The two main sandbodies drilled at IODP Site C0002 within the inner Nankai Accretionary Prism have similar petrographic signatures to those of the Zenisu and Kyushu submarine fans in the Shikoku Basin. The incorporation of the Shikoku Basin deposits most likely resulted from the seaward propagation of in‐sequence thrusts forming an outer accretionary wedge. The incorporation of the Kyushu Fan into the inner accretionary prism implies that the décollement was located in the hemipelagic interval beneath the Kyushu Fan at least until ∼2 Ma, whereas it is now located in the hemipelagic intervals below the Zenisu Fan. Such shifts in décollement location are most likely related to changes in physical properties of the hemipelagic interval due to significant compaction and diagenesis during subduction. Based on U/Pb dating of zircon and petrographic analyses, this study focuses on the provenance, transport and accretion of sediments along SW Japan where a large‐magnitude earthquake occurred. U/Pb dating of zircon from sand sampled in the Shikoku Basin and in the frontal Nankai accretionary prism indicates a significant sediment input from SE China and from the Shimanto Belt from ∼14.7 to ∼8 Ma. The youngest submarine fan of the Shikoku Basin was mainly sourced from the Shimanto Belt and the Izu‐Bonin/Honshu arc collision. This agrees with the hypothesis of a very oblique subduction or strike‐slip motion of the Philippines Sea Plate between ∼12.2 and 9.2 Ma, after which orthogonal subduction occurred after ∼8 Ma. The deformed submarine fans observed in the accretionary prism show similar petrographic signatures to sandbodies of the Shikoku Basin located on the incoming plate. This indicates that the Shikoku Basin deposits were incorporated by seaward propagation of thrusts, likely after resurgence of orthogonal subduction ∼8 Ma. To our knowledge, this is the first time that any study has correlated stratigraphy on a subducting oceanic plate to the internal stratigraphy of a linked accretionary prism.
