Previous interpretation of the nature and distribution of subaerial glacial landforms established that Frobisher Bay in southeastern Baffin Island was glaciated in the Late Wisconsinan by ice flowing southeast from the Foxe–Baffin Ice Dome. New seafloor mapping within the bay has revealed submarine glacial landforms that are described and interpreted in the context of their subglacial, ice‐marginal, glaciomarine and marine process environments. Interpretation of the evidence confirms that ice occupied Frobisher Bay, flowing from the northwest to southeast, parallel to the orientation of the bay. Relatively rapid ice velocities are indicated by the presence of ice‐moulded bedrock and megaridges flanking a deep trough (>700 m) along the faulted southern flank of Frobisher Bay. In shallower regions, areal scouring and channelisation indicate the widespread presence of glacial ice. As ice retreated to the northwest towards the Foxe Ice Dome, De Geer and recessional moraines were deposited at the ice front. The latter correlate spatially with the extensive Frobisher Bay Moraine System on land. Two iceberg ploughmark populations are evident, with smaller relict features in shallow water in rare locations in the northwest of the bay, and larger relict and modern ploughmarks in deeper water in outer Frobisher Bay. The physical oceanographic environment, water mass characteristics, and distribution in the area adjacent to Larsen C Ice Shelf (LCIS) are investigated using hydrographic data collected during the 2019 Weddell Sea Expedition. The results shed light on the ocean conditions adjacent to a thinning LCIS, on a continental shelf that is a source region for Weddell Sea Deep Water (WSDW), a precursor of the globally important Antarctic Bottom Water. Modified Warm Deep Water (MWDW), a water mass of circumpolar origin, is identified on the continental shelf and is observed to mix with Ice Shelf Water (ISW) and High Salinity Shelf Water (HSSW), both source waters of WSDW. A source water type decomposition analysis reveals high levels of mixing in the area, with much spatial variability. Heat content anomalies indicate an introduction of heat, presumed to be associated with MWDW, into the area via Jason Trough. Furthermore, candidate parent sources for ISW are identified in the region, indicating the potential for a flow of continental shelf waters into the ice shelf cavity; however, the impact on LCIS cannot be surmised from the available observations. ISW and HSSW are observed to make dominant contributions to the densest layers within Jason Trough, where waters are likely en route to feed the deep layers of the Antarctic Slope Current. This cross‐shelf flux of water masses links the region of the Weddell Sea adjacent to northern LCIS to global ocean circulation and Bottom Water characteristics via its contribution to ISW and HSSW, and hence WSDW properties. Plain Language Summary: A voyage to the Antarctic Weddell Sea in 2019 has enabled a diagnosis of the water mass characteristics adjacent to the northern sector of Larsen C Ice Shelf (LCIS). This region is of interest due to its contribution to the properties of the principal source waters of Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW), a water mass that constitutes the deep limb of the global ocean circulation system. LCIS has experienced considerable variability in thickness and extent during the satelite observational period, yet the role of the ocean in these changes remains unclear. It is, therefore, necessary that we improve our understanding of the ocean region adjacent to LCIS. Hydrographic results presented here reveal the presence of a warm water mass in the area, termed Modified Warm Deep Water (MWDW), which has its origins in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. MWDW appears to thoroughly mix with the local shelf waters such as Ice Shelf Water (ISW) and High Salinity Shelf Water (HSSW), both precursors of AABW. An alteration of water properties on the continental shelf could have important implications for future regional and global ocean circulation, meaning that knowledge regarding the water masses in this area is highly relevant. Historical ship logbooks provide vital historic meteorological observations in the Southern Ocean, one of the largest climate‐data deficient regions on the Earth. Christian Salvesen Whaling Company logbooks from whaling ships operating in the Southern Ocean, starting from the 1930s through the 1950s, are examined. Meteorological information contained in these logbooks has been extracted to produce a historical climate dataset. We discuss various instructions recommended by the British Admiralty to observe and record weather conditions on‐board whaling ships. Statistical tests were used to flag erroneous values and corrections were made using neighbouring values. Meteorological parameters such as air pressure, air and sea temperature and wind force on the Beaufort scale were standardized, converting imperial to metric units. The data were structured according to the internationally accepted International Maritime Meteorological Archive format, which includes the most commonly reported meteorological variables, including the time, location and ship‐related meta‐data. Hence, a readily accessible, error‐corrected and standardized historical climate dataset of the Weddell Sea sector of the Southern Ocean is presented. New information is presented on the configuration of the northern Barents Sea Ice Sheet ( BSIS) during the last glacial and deglaciation (21-11.5 ka). The glacial dynamics of the BSIS that we discuss are based on clay-mineral compositions of subglacial tills and a distinct kaolinite source in the central Barents Sea where previous workers have placed a large, single ice dome for the last glacial BSIS. Our results, which appear to show that subglacial sediments were sourced locally, suggest that the BSIS consisted at least temporarily of multiple domes and may have been more dynamic than previously thought. New radiocarbon dates are presented along with new ice-extent reconstructions for 16.5-15, 14, 13.5 and 11.5 ka. Our reconstructions add information to previous regional and continental-scale efforts in areas east of Svalbard. Ice retreat in the northern Barents Sea progressed as follows. (i) 19-16.5 ka. Major calving led to dynamic thinning in shelf troughs and was accompanied by significant ice-sheet thinning inland as a result of ice drawdown. (ii) 16.5-15 ka. Rapid ice-margin retreat of between 75-100 km occurred, via lift-off and iceberg calving, in Hinlopen and Kvitøya troughs, as well as major retreat (>300 km) in Franz Victoria Trough ( FVT) further east. (iii) 15-13.5 ka. Retreat progressed westwards from the FVT towards Svalbard with troughs east of Svalbard (Kvitøya, Olga, and Erik Eriksen) mostly ice-free by 13.5 ka. (iv) 13.5-11.5 ka. Ice retreated gradually towards residual ice masses on Svalbard, Kong Karls Land and possibly Storbanken. Our data require a modification of earlier views of the BSIS because they point toward a more dynamic ice sheet and decay that, once initiated at the shelf break, was dominated by the withdrawal of ice from the FVT that progressed westwards towards the Svalbard archipelago. Ice stream bed topography contains key evidence for the ways ice streams interact with, and are potentially controlled by, their beds. Here we present the first application of two-dimensional Fourier analysis to 22 marine and terrestrial topographies from 5 regions in Antarctica and Canada, with and without mega-scale glacial lineations (MSGLs). We find that the topography of MSGL-rich ice stream sedimentary beds is characterized by multiple, periodic wavelengths between 300 and 1200 m and amplitudes from decimeters to a few meters. This periodic topography is consistent with the idea that instability is a key element to the formation of MSGL bedforms. Dominant wavelengths vary among locations and, on one paleo ice stream bed, increase along the direction of ice flow by 1.7 ± 0.52% km−1. We suggest that these changes are likely to reflect pattern evolution via downstream wavelength coarsening, even under potentially steady ice stream geometry and flow conditions. The amplitude of MSGLs is smaller than that of other fluvial and glacial topographies but within the same order of magnitude. However, MSGLs are a striking component of ice stream beds because the topographic amplitude of features not aligned with ice flow is reduced by an order of magnitude relative to those oriented with the flow direction. This study represents the first attempt to automatically derive the spectral signatures of MSGLs. It highlights the plausibility of identifying these landform assemblages using automated techniques and provides a benchmark for numerical models of ice stream flow and subglacial landscape evolution. ABSTRACT The Norwegian Channel Ice Stream of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet extended across the northern North Sea margin during the mid- to late Quaternary, eroding older sediment from the continental shelf. Consequently, little is known about early Quaternary sedimentation on this margin. We use two- and three-dimensional seismic-reflection data to investigate changing sediment volumes and sources in the northern North Sea through the Quaternary. The northern North Sea Basin was infilled during the early Quaternary by intercalated glacigenic debris-flows and contourites, which provide a record of the delivery of glacigenic sediment to the slope and the intensity of North Atlantic thermohaline circulation during early Quaternary glacial-interglacial cycles. The infilling of the basin reduced accommodation and led to the deflection of mid- to late Quaternary sediments into the Norwegian Sea, forming the North Sea Fan. Close to the onset of the mid-Quaternary, the south-western Scandinavian Ice Sheet margin was drained by an ice stream located beneath Måløy Plateau, 60 km east of the Last Glacial Maximum Norwegian Channel Ice Stream. The southward-flowing Norwegian Sea Bottom Water current was directed into the partially filled northern North Sea Basin during the early Quaternary, and deflected progressively northwards as the basin became infilled. Turbid meltwater plumes and ice-proximal fans occur where subglacial streams reach the grounded marine margins of modern and ancient tidewater glaciers. However, the spacing and temporal stability of these subglacial channels is poorly understood. This has significant implications for understanding the geometry and distribution of Quaternary and ancient ice-proximal fans that can form important aquifers and hydrocarbon reservoirs. Remote-sensing and numerical-modelling techniques are applied to the 200 km long marine margin of a Svalbard ice cap, Austfonna, to quantify turbid meltwater-plume distribution and predict its temporal stability. Results are combined with observations from geophysical data close to the modern ice front to refine existing depositional models for ice-proximal fans. Plumes are spaced ca 3 km apart and their distribution along the ice front is stable over decades. Numerical modelling also predicts the drainage pattern and meltwater discharge beneath the ice cap; modelled water-routing patterns are in reasonable agreement with satellite-mapped plume locations. However, glacial retreat of several kilometres over the past 40 years has limited build-up of significant ice-proximal fans. A single fan and moraine ridge is noted from marine-geophysical surveys. Closer to the ice front there are smaller recessional moraines and polygonal sediment lobes but no identifiable fans. Schematic models of ice-proximal deposits represent varying glacier-terminus stability: (i) stable terminus where meltwater sedimentation produces an ice-proximal fan; (ii) quasi-stable terminus, where glacier readvance pushes or thrusts up ice-proximal deposits into a morainal bank; and (iii) retreating terminus, with short still-stands, allowing only small sediment lobes to build up at melt-stream portals. These modern investigations are complemented with outcrop and subsurface observations and numerical modelling of an ancient, Ordovician glacial system. Thick turbidite successions and large fans in the Late Ordovician suggest either high-magnitude events or sustained high discharge, consistent with a relatively mild palaeo-glacial setting for the former North African ice sheet. ABSTRACT Paleoenvironments during the late Younger Dryas through early Holocene retreat of the Greenland Ice Sheet from the outer shelf in the Disko Trough system of central West Greenland were investigated via lithofacies, foraminifera, dinocysts and sediment provenance analyses in radiocarbon-dated sediment cores from the upper slope (JR175-VC35) and outer shelf (JR175-VC20 and HU2008029-070CC). Core data show that the ice margin retreated rapidly from the outer shelf by calving, beginning by 12.2k cal a BP under cold paleoceanographic conditions with up to 11 months of sea-ice. Ice retreat into Disko Bugt was well underway by 10.9k cal a BP. Enhanced ice-sheet ablation in Disko Bugt and elsewhere along the West Greenland coast is inferred from cold glacial marine conditions associated with high sedimentation rates between 10.9 and 9.5k cal a BP on the outer shelf. Glacial marine conditions are recorded on the outer shelf until 7.8k cal a BP. Detrital carbonate-bearing sediments rich in >2-mm clasts deposited between 11.6 and 10.6 k cal a BP indicate that icebergs calved from northern Baffin Bay ice margins were melting and releasing sediments along West Greenland while the Greenland Ice Sheet margin was retreating into Disko Bugt. High-resolution bathymetric mapping of the fjords and continental shelf around the Svalbard archipelago shows an extensive pattern of large- and medium-scale submarine landforms formed by differences in ice-flow regimes. Mega-scale glacial lineations, lateral moraines, transverse ridges and glaciotectonic features are superimposed on the large-scale fjord, shelf and cross-shelf trough morphology of the margin. From these landforms we have inferred the flow and dynamics of the last ice sheet on Svalbard. Major fjords and their adjacent cross-shelf troughs have been identified as the main routes for ice streams draining the ice sheet. On the west coast of Svalbard major pathways existed along Bellsund, Isfjorden and Kongsfjorden. Along the northern Svalbard margin most of the ice drained through the Woodfjorden cross-shelf trough and Wijdefjorden-Hinlopen strait. Extensive areas with trough-parallel glacial lineations in the cross-shelf troughs suggest fast ice flow by palaeo-ice streams. Lateral ice-stream moraines, several tens of kilometres in length, have been mapped along the margins of some of the cross-shelf troughs, identifying the border zone between fast ice flow and stagnant or slow-flowing ice on intervening banks. Several general implications can be drawn from the interpretation of the glacier-derived submarine landforms around Svalbard. Firstly, the Late Weichselian ice sheet was partitioned into fast-flowing ice streams separated by slower moving ice. Secondly, our submarine morphological evidence supports earlier sedimentological, stratigraphical and chronological studies in implying that a large ice sheet reached the shelf edge around almost all of western and northern Svalbard in the Late Weichselian. The idea of a relatively restricted ice sheet over Svalbard, with ice-free conditions in some areas of the west coast at the Last Glacial Maximum, is therefore unlikely to be correct. Thirdly, the ice sheet appears to have retreated more rapidly from the cross-shelf troughs and outer fjords, although sometimes this occurred in a punctuated pattern indicated by grounding-zone wedges, and more slowly from the intervening shallower banks. In addition, a grounding zone for the ice sheet has been mapped at the shelf edge 10-20 km off the northwest coast of Svalbard, suggesting that ice did not reach the adjacent Yermak Plateau during the Late Weichselian. Based on field investigations in northern Russia and interpretation of offshore seismic data, we have made a preliminary reconstruction of the maximum ice-sheet extent in the Barents and Kara Sea region during the Early/Middle Weichselian and the Late Weichselian. Our investigations indicate that the Barents and Kara ice sheets attained their maximum Weichselian positions in northern Russia prior to 50 000 yr BP, whereas the northeastern flank of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet advanced to a maximum position shortly after 17 000 calendar years ago. During the Late Weichselian (25 000-10 000 yr BP), much of the Russian Arctic remained ice-free. According to our reconstruction, the extent of the ice sheets in the Barents and Kara Sea region during the Late Weichselian glacial maximum was less than half that of the maximum model which, up to now, has been widely used as a boundary condition for testing and refining General Circulation Models (GCMs). Preliminary numerical-modelling experiments predict Late Weichselian ice sheets which are larger than the ice extent implied for the Kara Sea region from dated geological evidence, suggesting very low precipitation. Almost 90% of 39 m of core material recovered from Scoresby Sund and the adjacent East Greenland shelf is massive diamicton, interpreted to be formed predominantly by the release of iceberg rafted debris and reworking by iceberg scouring. There is also likely to be a contribution from suspension settling of fines derived from glaciofluvial sources. Model calculations suggest that the [SUP14]C derived Holocene sedimentation rate of 0.1-0.3 m 1000 yr[SUP-1] in Scoresby Sund can be accounted for mainly by iceberg rafting of debris. A further 4% of core mateial is of gravel or coarse sand lenses, interpreted to reflect iceberg dumping of debris. Intensive iceberg scouring, which reworks sea floor sediments, is observed on acoustic records from over 30000 km[SUP2] of the Scoresby Sund fiord system and the adjacent East Greenland shelf (69-72°N and 75°N). The rate lf iceberg production from Greenland Ice Sheet outlet glaciers, and iceberg drift tracks on the shelf, suggests that iceberg rafting and scouring may be important over a significant proportion of the 500 000 km[SUP2] area above the shelf break. The relatively extensive modern occurrence of massive diamicton, formed by iceberg rafting and scouring, together with suspension settling of fines, suggests that it may also be a significant facies in the glacier-influenced geological record. The recognition in the geological record of the massive diamicton facies described above may also indicate the former presence of fast flowing ice sheet outlet glaciers.

Pebble fabric data are available from several facies of glacigenic sediments deposited by modern glaciers, where sedimentary processes can be observed or inferred with relatively little ambiguity. Over 100 samples from contemporary environments illustrate fabrics characterizing melt-out till, deformed and undeformed lodgement till, sediment flow deposits and ice slope colluvium. Lodgement till fabric variability is related to the two-layer structure of these sediments: a structureless, friable upper layer with low shear strength and high consolidation coefficient, overlying a very compact material of horizontal platy structure. Fabric strength (assessed by eigenvalue analysis) is weaker and pebble dip is more dispersed in the upper structureless horizon. Stronger fabrics in the lower platy horizon may be primary depositional fabrics which are destroyed by subglacial shearing to give weaker fabrics in the upper horizon. Alternatively, upper horizon fabrics may be characteristic of all recently-deposited lodgement tills, with stronger fabrics developing at depth by dewatering and consolidation. There is a general reduction in fabric strength and increase in particle dip associated with the transition from melt-out tills, through undeformed and deformed lodgement tills, to sediment flow deposits and ice slope colluvium. There is, however, considerable overlap in the fabric strengths characteristic of sediment flow deposits and deformed lodgement tills. Fabric data from modern glacial sedimentary facies are used to assist in interpreting the mode of deposition of some Quaternary glacial sediments. Relatively strong fabrics characteristic of melt-out tills and undeformed lodgement tills are more likely to be diagnostic of genesis than weaker fabrics associated with deformed sediments. Analyses of quartz sand grain shape, sedimen rates and foraminifera define glacial and non-glacial episodes in a 9·69 m core from Frobisher Bay, Arctic Canada. Five radiocarbon dates on organic matter provide a preliminary core chromology, with a basal date of 11,910 yr BP. Quartz sand grain morphology is measured for samples at seven core levels using: (1) Fourier shape analysis; (2) percentage of grain surface conchoidally fractured. Samples at 2·0 and 7·5 m are most fractured an have Fourier roughness coefficients similar to the particles sampled directly from glacier ice. These two samples probably represent glacial events in the core. Major intervals of non-carbonate and influx occur at 9·0-4·5 m and 3·5-1·5 m, separated by several thousand years of slower sedimentation. Detritial carbonate influx rates are relatively high prior to 4·3 m, then decline rapidly indicating a shift in sediment provenance from limestones flooring Frobisher Bay to rafting from far-travelled icebergs. Bio- and lithostratigraphic analysis allows definition of five core units: (1) an environment similar to today below 8·5 m; (2) glacial conditions from 8·5-6·8 m, associated with ice proximal to the core site; (3) ameliorating conditions from 6·8 and 3·2m; (4) cooler conditions from 3·2 to 0&miidot;5 m, probably related to increased iceberg flux rather than neological advances of nearby ice caps; (5) an environment similar to today from 0· [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a first version of the Svalbard ice‐free topography (SVIFT1.0) using a mass conserving approach for mapping glacier ice thickness. SVIFT1.0 is informed by more than 1 million point measurements, totalling more than 8,700 km of thickness profiles. SVIFT1.0 is publicly available and represents the geometric state around the year 2010. Our estimate for the total ice volume is 6,199 km3, equivalent to 1.5‐cm sea level rise. The thickness map suggests that 13% of the glacierized area is grounded below sea level. A complementary map of error estimates comprises uncertainties in the thickness surveys as well as in other input variables. Aggregated error estimates are used to define a likely ice‐volume range of 5,200–7,300 km3. The ice front thickness of marine‐terminating glaciers is a key quantity for ice loss attribution because it controls the potential ice discharge by iceberg calving into the ocean. We find a mean ice front thickness of 135 m for the archipelago (likely range 123–158 m). Yet to this day, the ice volume stored in the many glaciers on Svalbard is not well known. Many attempts have been made to infer a total volume estimate, but results differ substantially. This surprises because of the long research activity in this area. A large record of more than 1 million thickness measurements exists, making Svalbard an ideal study area for the application of a state‐of‐the‐art mapping approach for glacier ice thickness. The mapping approach computes an ice volume that will raise global sea level by more than half an inch if instantaneously melted. If spread over the metropolitan area, New York would be buried beneath a 100‐m ice cover. The asset of this approach is that it provides not only a thickness map for each glacier on the archipelago but also an error map that defines the likely local thickness range. Finally, we provide the first well‐informed estimate of the ice front thickness of all marine‐terminating glaciers that loose icebergs to the ocean. The archipelago‐wide mean ice front cliff is 135 m.
