The reaction steps involved in the 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5‐furandicarboxylic acid conversion by means of H2O2 were investigated employing a dedicated computational protocol based on density functional theory. The catalytic environment of choice was a molecular model representing a portion of the halloysite nanotube outer surface, functionalized by an organosilane, the 3‐aminopropyltriethoxysilane, whose amino group bonds one gold atom. At this stage of the investigation, the process was fully detailed in terms of the interactions between the reaction intermediates and the catalyst, and the reaction standard free energies. In addition, the energy barriers of the elementary steps involving the hydrogen migration from the adsorbed organic species to the gold atom were analyzed. On the basis of the interaction geometries, a certain distinction among the preferred reaction path can be inferred as a function of the net negative charge characterizing the catalyst outer surface. Since the inner surface of halloysite can represent the acid environment needed to obtain 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural through dehydration of fructose, the present study is framed in a wider research field where the possibility to consider functionalized halloysite as one‐pot reactor for the valorization of biomass is explored. A periodic, self-consistent planewave DFT study was carried out to explore the potential use of Pd6 clusters supported on a boron nitride sheet as a catalyst for the selective decomposition of formic acid (HCOOH) to CO2 and H2. The competition between formate (HCOO) and carboxyl (COOH) paths on catalytic sites, with different proximities to the support, was studied. Based on energetics alone, the reaction may mainly follow the HCOO route. Slightly lower activation energies were found at the lateral sites of the cluster as compared to top face sites. This is particularly true for the bidentate to monodentate HCOO conversion. Through comparison of results with similar studies on HCOOH decomposition on extended Pd surfaces, it was demonstrated that the existence of undercoordinated sites in the sub-nanometer cluster could play a key role in preferentially stabilizing HCOO over COOH, which is a common CO precursor in this reaction. A hydrogen spillover mechanism was also investigated; migration toward the boron nitride support is not favorable, at least in the early stages of the reaction. The fragmentation of molecular hydrogen on N-doped carbon networks was investigated by using molecular (polyaromatic macrocycles) as well as truncated and periodic (carbon nanotubes) models. The computational study was focused on the ergonicity analysis of the reaction and on the properties of the transition states involved when constellations of three or four pyridinic nitrogen atom defects are present in the carbon network. Calculations show that whenever N-defects are embedded in species characterized by large conjugated π-systems, either in polyaromatic macrocycles or carbon nanotubes, the corresponding H2 bond cleavage is largely exergonic. The fragmentation Gibbs free energy is affected by the final arrangement of the hydrogen atoms on the defect and by the extension of the π-electron cloud, but it is not influenced by the curvature of the system. Selective dehydrogenation of the biomass-derived lignan hydroxymatairesinol (HMR) to oxomatairesinol (oxoMAT) was studied over an Au/Al2O3 catalyst. The reaction was carried out in a semi-batch glass reactor at 343 K under two different gas atmospheres, namely produced through synthetic air or nitrogen. The studied reaction is, in fact, an example of secondary-alcohol oxidation over an Au catalyst. Thus, the investigated reaction mechanism of HMR oxidative dehydrogenation is useful for the fundamental understanding of other secondary-alcohol dehydrogenation over Au surfaces. To investigate the elementary catalytic steps ruling both oxygen-free- and oxygen-assisted dehydrogenation of HMR to oxoMAT, the reactions were mimicked in a vacuum over an Au28 cluster. Adsorption of the involved molecular species-O2, three different HMR diastereomers (namely, one SRR and two RRR forms), and the oxoMAT derivative-were also studied at the DFT level. In particular, the energetic and structural differences between SRR-HMR and RRR-HMR diastereomers on the Au28 cluster were analyzed, following different reaction pathways for the HMR dehydrogenation that occur in presence or absence of oxygen. The corresponding mechanisms explain the higher rates of the experimentally observed oxygen-assisted reaction, mostly depending on the involved HMR diastereomer surface conformations. The role of the support was also elucidated, considering a very simple Au28 charged model that explains the experimentally observed high reactivity of the Au/Al2O3 catalyst. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The proton dynamics in Y-doped BaZrO3 derivatives, in particular the different dopant environments within a Pm ${\bar 3}$ m cubic framework, were studied by using classical molecular dynamics (MD) calculations. Single- and double substitution of zirconium by yttrium atoms was considered. The presence of yttrium induced variations in the surrounding oxygen sites, according to their local geometrical arrangements. The differences among such distinct oxygen sites became evident when protons interacted with them and upon changes in the temperature. So, different proton transfer pathways, which had different energy barriers, characterized the topologically different oxygen sites. The experimental proton-hopping activation energy was only reproduced in those structures in which two yttrium atoms formed a Y-O-Y arrangement, which also acted as multilevel protonic traps. Protonic conduction in these materials could be improved by avoiding such yttrium clustering, hence preventing the formation of the protonic traps. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Y-doped BaZrO3 derivatives were studied by density functional theory (DFT) to investigate the local arrangements of the octahedral sites in Pm ${\bar 3}$ m cubic frameworks. Single- and double substitution of zirconium by yttrium were considered, including in the presence of a nearby oxygen vacancy. Although the structural symmetry of undoped barium zirconate was not modified after yttrium doping, the presence of yttrium induced several differences in the oxygen sites around it, according to the local geometrical arrangement of yttrium in the host matrix. As an example, the differences between such oxygen sites were shown in the presence of a proton. In this case, different stabilization energies characterized the protonated fragments. Only in those structures, in which two yttrium atoms were neighbors (i.e., formed Y-O-Y moieties), were the relative energy differences between the corresponding proton stable sites in agreement with the order of magnitude of the experimental proton-hopping activation energies. The distribution of such energy differences suggested a grouping of the oxygen atoms into three sets, which had peculiar structural features that weren′t easily deducible from their topologies. Two reactive pathways are described for the dissociative adsorption of a hydrogen molecule on a Pd4 pyramidal cluster, by using DFT/B3LYP and CASSCF/CASPT2 computational methods. Because of the different spin multiplicities of the cluster in the initial and final states, the reaction proceeds through a spin multiplicity change, which occurs close to the transition states. The activation energy values are very similar when the DFT method is used, whereas the CASPT2 calculations predict that the concerted mechanism is disfavored. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An extensive and systematic conformational search was performed on the two epimers of the natural lignan 7-hydroxymatairesinol (HMR), by means of a home-made Systematic Conformational Search Analysis (SCSA) code, designed to select more and more stable conformers through sequential geometry optimization of trial structures at increasing levels of calculation theory. In the present case, the starting molecular structures were selected by the semi-empirical AM1 method and filtered – i.e. decreased in number by choosing the more stable species – on the basis of their energy calculated by the HF method and the 6-31G(d) basis set. The geometries obtained were further refined by performing density functional theory (DFT) optimizations, using the B3LYP functional and the 6-31G(d,p) basis set, both in vacuo and in ethanol solution. This procedure allowed us to isolate, at a high level of theory, three groups of epimer conformers characterized by open, semi-folded, and folded conformations. Moreover, the SCSA allowed us to describe a conformational space made-up by about 20 species for each of the two epimers. The corresponding energy content of these species was within 27 kJ mol-1 from the absolute minimum found, both in vacuo and in ethanol solution. The conformational analysis, followed by the inspection of the stereochemistry of the two most stable conformers of both epimers, provides support in rationalizing the proposed reaction mechanism of the catalytic hydrogenolysis of the HMR to matairesinol (MAT). The Systematic Conformational Search Analysis (SCSA) code was employed to study the conformational properties of the 8α-hydroxy-germacradiene-6,12-olide isomers. This procedure was extended to the trans,cis- and trans,trans-1(10),4-isomers of 8α,15-dihydroxy-germacradiene-6,12-olides and 8α-hydroxy-15-oxo-germacradiene-6,12-olides, to investigate structural and energetic analogies between these and the 8α-hydroxy-germacradiene-6,12-olide species. The calculated 13C NMR spectra, at the hybrid DFT mPW1PW91 level, showed a sound correlation with the corresponding experimental spectra, providing a valid support to the reliability of the calculated structures and to the consistence of our conformational analysis. The results presented here allowed us to support our previous mechanistic interpretation on the oxidation of 8α,15-dihydroxy-trans,trans-1(10),4-germacradiene-6,12-olides to 8α-hydroxy-15-oxo-trans,cis-1(10),4-germacradiene-6,12-olides.
