Shrub willow (Salix spp.) is capable of producing commercially attractive amounts of biomass in short rotations, but harvesting costs and logistics remain a concern. There is a particular need for information about harvesting operations on larger, commercial short‐rotation woody crop systems. Another recent issue on commercial fields in northern New York is commercial growers conducting harvests during the growing season rather than the recommended dormant season when fields may be too wet to harvest. This study evaluated and modeled the in‐field performance of a cut‐and‐chip harvester for almost 700 wagonloads of chips operating in commercial willow fields in a wider array of crop and field conditions than have been previously reported. Analysis indicated that the time of harvest (leaf‐on or leaf‐off) and whether site conditions were wet or dry affected the harvester's material capacity. Mean material capacity was greatest for leaf‐off, dry conditions (71.8 Mg/hr) and lowest for leaf‐on harvests, which were similar for wet (30.4 Mg/hr) and dry conditions (29.7 Mg/hr). Mean crop specific fuel consumption ranged between 1.3 and 3.3 L/Mg, but can get considerably higher for standing biomasses below 40 Mg/ha. Wet ground conditions and leaf‐on harvests tend to decrease material capacity and increase fuel consumption as the harvester has to divert power to forward movement and material processing. Relationships for material capacity and fuel consumption based on standing biomass, time of harvest and ground conditions will be essential for evaluating and modeling the economic and environmental impacts of commercial‐scale willow operations. Abstract: To increase the understanding of poplar and willow perennial woody crops and facilitate their deployment for the production of biofuels, bioproducts, and bioenergy, there is a need for broadscale yield maps. For national analysis of woody and herbaceous crops production potential, biomass feedstock yield maps should be developed using a common framework. This study developed willow and poplar potential yield maps by combining data from a network of willow and poplar field trials and the modeling power of PRISM‐ELM. Yields of the top three willow cultivars across 17 sites ranged from 3.60 to 14.6 Mg ha−1 yr−1 dry weight, while the yields from 17 poplar trials ranged from 7.5 to 15.2 Mg ha−1 yr−1. Relationships between the environmental suitability estimates from the PRISM‐ELM model and results from field trials had an R2 of 0.60 for poplar and 0.81 for willow. The resulting potential yield maps reflected the range of poplar and willow yields that have been reported in the literature. Poplar covered a larger geographic range than willow, which likely reflects the poplar breeding efforts that have occurred for many more decades using genotypes from a broader range of environments than willow. While the field trial data sets used to develop these models represent the most complete information at the time, there is a need to expand and improve the model by monitoring trials over multiple cutting cycles and across a broader range of environmental gradients. Short-rotation coppice systems like shrub willow are projected to be an important source of biomass in the United States for the production of bioenergy, biofuels, and renewable bio-based products, with the potential for auxiliary environmental benefits and multifunctional systems. Almost three decades of research has focused on the development of shrub willow crops for biomass and ecosystem services. The current expansion of willow in New York State (about 500 ha) for the production of renewable power and heat has been possible because of incentive programs offered by the federal government, commitments by end users, the development of reliable harvesting systems, and extension services offered to growers. Improvements in the economics of the system are expected as willow production expands further, which should help lower establishment costs, enhance crop management options and increase efficiencies in harvesting and logistics. Deploying willow in multifunctional value-added systems provides opportunities for both potential producers and end users to learn about the system and the quality of the biomass feedstock, which in turn will help overcome barriers to expansion. There has been much concern that traffic associated with the harvesting of intensively managed pine plantations reduces long-term soil-site productivity. Trafficking, especially during wet periods, can cause severe soil physical disturbance and redistribution of woody residues. Although the negative effects of soil compaction and rutting on root growth and the importance of organic matter for maintaining site productivity are well known, the connection between these factors and actual changes in soil and site productivity has been difficult to evaluate. Three productive, 20-ha loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) plantations located on fertile "wet pine flats" on the coastal plain of South Carolina were subjected to wet- and dry-weather harvesting and mechanical site preparation. A factorial design was used to evaluate changes in soil-site quality after 5 yr based on postharvest classifications of soil physical disturbance, harvest residue removal, and the type of site preparation using a recently developed rank diagnostic approach. Trees on disturbed sites performed as well or better than trees on minimally disturbed sites with average levels of harvest residues. Bedding restored relative soil-site productivity (based on the rank diagnostic) on all but heavily disturbed sites with >25% bare soil; however, these heavily disturbed sites comprised about 5% of the total area harvested. Moderate levels of disturbance may increase relative soil-site productivity, perhaps by controlling competition or increasing nitrogen mineralization rates. The production of short rotation woody crops (SRWCs) such as poplars and willows is a promising component of global bioenergy and phytotechnology portfolios. In addition to the provision of biomass feedstocks and pollution remediation, these trees and shrubs have been sustainably grown to conserve or utilize water in a variety of applications. Growing these woody plants for multiple uses supports many of the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially Clean Water and Sanitation (SDG6) and Affordable and Clean Energy (SDG7). As a result, focusing on ecosystem services such as freshwater and biomass has become an important aspect of deploying these production systems across variable landscapes. The current review consists of an introduction of ecosystem services and the SDGs, as well as SRWCs and their applications. The middle section of the review contains case studies highlighting the positive water linkages of producing short rotation poplars and willows for bioenergy and phytotechnologies. The review concludes with a section that combines the common themes that are consistent among the case studies to address options for integrating new bioenergy feedstock production systems into rural and urban landscapes to promote environmental, social and economic sustainability.
