Traditional synthesis made outstanding achievements but still suffers various drawbacks, such as manual operation, poor efficiency, and lack of reproducibility. Thanks to the development of laboratory automation, synthetic chemistry is now chasing a pavement from a labor‐intensive process to intelligent automation. Herein, we highlight some of the most recent representative breakthroughs in automated synthesis and present an outlook for this field. Abstract: [3+1+1] annulation of isocyanoacetates with nitrosoarenes for the preparation of 1,4,5‐trisubstituted imidazoles or 4,5‐dihydro‐1H‐imidazoles has been disclosed. Isocyanoacetates serve as both a three‐atom component and a one‐carbon unit in the reaction. Specially, with catalytic amounts of Ag2CO3 and a reduced temperature this [3+1+1] annulation of isocyanoacetates enables the formation of trans‐imidazolines in good yield and with high diastereoselectivity. Silver plays a critical dual role: i) as the catalyst for the efficiency to activate the isocyanides and ii) the oxidant in aromatization process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Silver-mediated reactions have recently emerged as a frontier area in organic chemistry. Indeed, the remarkable property of silver as a single-electron oxidant has led to its exploitment into the field of radical chemistry. The excellent reactivity and high selectivity exhibited by silver salts in the activation of different organic substrates place them among the most prominent reagents in free radical reactions. The present review aims to provide the readers with a critical overview of silver-based radical reactions, especially emphasizing the reactivity, selectivity and a detailed description of the reaction mechanism with particular attention to the role of Ag(I)-based catalysts/reactants. The selected examples have been classified according to the type of radicals generated, namely carbon-centered radicals and heteroatom (such as nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, sulfur)-centered radicals. The generation of such radicals as well as their application in synthetic processes including oxidation, addition, coupling, and radical cascades have been described in detail. An efficient Ag2CO3-promoted sulfonylation of allyl/propargyl alcohols with sodium sulfinates has been developed. The reaction tolerates a wide range of functional groups to deliver γ-keto sulfones in high yields (up to 93 %). Propargyl alcohols furnished trimerization product 1,3,5-triaroylbenzenes in the presence of sodium methanesulfinate under the standard conditions. The material is organized according to the type of radicals generated in situ, including carbon ‐ centered radicals and heteroatom ‐ centered radicals, such as nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, and sulfur radicals. In each section the authors present the radical generation and their use in organic synthesis through oxidation, addition, coupling, radical cascades, etc. The detailed comparison and analysis allow an understanding of the role and catalytic cycle of silver salts in triggering and promoting the radical reactions, which should stimulate further research interest in the field.
