Youth empowerment has become a growing concern for achieving sustainable development worldwide. Yet, there is limited evidence on which domains of empowerment are important for youth and how they can be operationalized with indicators for measurement. We propose four domains of youth empowerment with corresponding indicators and use a well‐established methodology for constructing a composite index. Using data from a household survey in Tunisia, we assess youth empowerment in the proposed domains and explore their relation to youth well‐being. As in many high‐income countries, there is increasing awareness towards organic farming in many low‐ and middle‐income countries. Sustained local demand is an essential requirement for further adoption of organic farming by smallholders, who typically have only limited access to export markets. Until now, only few studies have explored the local willingness to pay (WTP) for organic products in low‐ and middle‐income countries in real purchase situations. This paper analyses the consumers' WTP for organic rice in urban and suburban Indonesia using an incentive‐compatible auction based on the Becker–DeGroot–Marschak (BDM) approach. We further study the effect of income and a randomised information treatment about the benefits of organic food on respondents' WTP. Estimates suggest that respondents are willing to pay an average price premium of 20% compared with what they paid for conventional rice outside our experiment. However, our results also indicate that raising consumers' WTP further is complex. Showing participants a video about health or, alternatively, environmental benefits of organic food was not effective in further raising WTP. The results can be used as a basis for the design of alternative awareness measures to increase knowledge, interest and demand for organic food. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The high cost of building integrated photovoltaics is one of the main reasons preventing a more widespread application. We propose a panel‐on‐demand concept for flexible design of building integrated thin‐film photovoltaics to address this issue. The concept is based on the use of semi‐finished PV modules (standard mass products) with subsequent refinement into BIPV PV modules. In this study, we demonstrate the three processes necessary to realize this concept. First, a prototype tool to cut thin film photovoltaic elements on glass substrates based on laser perforation was developed. Damage to the processed samples did not exceed a distance of 50 μm from laser cuts. Second, oxide/metal/oxide‐electrodes with integrated colour were applied on Cu (In, Ga)Se2 cells and standard monolithic interconnection structuring was used to produce modules sized 30 × 30 cm2 in red, green and blue with strong colours. Third, A back‐end interconnection process was developed for amorphous silicon thin film cells, which allows for the structuring of modules from elements of custom shape. The panel‐on‐demand strategy may allow for a streamlined production of customized modules and a lower cost for aesthetically pleasing, fully building integrated solar modules. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vision impairment is the most common disability worldwide and it is untreated in large parts of the developing world. We assess the willingness‐to‐pay (WTP) for eyeglasses among adults in a resource‐poor rural setting. We elicit the WTP using the Becker‐DeGroot‐Marschak (BDM) method. We combine this approach with a layaway scheme and a video intervention to probe to what extent liquidity constraints and information influence the WTP. Our results show that the average WTP is close to the cost of production for corrective glasses. Nevertheless, we find evidence for information constraints. Our video intervention raises the WTP for corrective glasses by 16 percent. We do not find evidence of screening effects, that is after 6 months, use is unrelated to the initial WTP. Increasing weather volatility manifesting itself through extreme rainfall and drought poses a significant threat to the livelihood of rural households in poor countries. Although it is documented how rainfall shocks affect agricultural activities, there is not much evidence on the indirect effects on the rest of the rural economy. Merging household panel data with grid‐level precipitation data, we study the indirect effects of rainfall shocks on non‐farm enterprises in rural Thailand. We not only consider the effects on labor supply to non‐farm enterprises but also focus on the performance of non‐farm enterprises. We find that households increase their labor participation in non‐farm self‐employment in response to excessive rainfall shocks. We do not find such a response for deficit rainfall shocks, which we explain by the increased demand for agricultural labor needed to cope with rainfall shortages. We also find suggestive evidence that rainfall shocks lead to increased input costs for non‐farm enterprises in the food processing industry, to higher input costs for farms, to higher sales revenues for agriculture‐related non‐farm enterprises and to lower expenditures for farm households on food and other consumption items. Overall, our analysis suggests that the costs of agricultural shocks are higher than what much of the literature has suggested so far. Despite limited market integration in poor rural economies, the spillovers are sizable and are transmitted through various channels. Summary: Background: Poor dietary intake is associated with the development of malnutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, anaemia and osteoporosis in individuals with inflammatory bowel disease. While trials are underway to manipulate the diet of people with IBD, there has been no comprehensive systematic review of the dietary intake of adults with IBD. Aims: To conduct a systematic evaluation and meta‐analysis of the dietary intake of adults with IBD, including macronutrients, micronutrients and food group data. Methods: CINAHL, Embase, Medline and Scopus were searched from 1 January 2000 to 25 September 2020 for cohort, case–control or cross‐sectional studies that reported usual dietary intake in adults. Data were pooled and reported as weighted mean intake for: all adults with IBD; Crohn's disease; ulcerative colitis; active disease; remission; males; females. A random‐effects meta‐analysis model compared intake with healthy individuals. Results: Forty studies were identified and 19 were included in the meta‐analysis. All subgroups of adults with IBD consumed inadequate energy (mean intake in adults with IBD 1980 ± 130 kcal), fibre (14 ± 4 g), folate (246 ± 33 mg) and calcium (529 ± 114 mg) per day. Intake of breads and cereals, legumes, fruit, vegetables and dairy were inadequate. Compared to healthy individuals, adults with IBD consume significantly less dietary fibre (SMD −0.59; 95% CI: −0.73, −0.46). Conclusions: This review provides improved clarity about the dietary intake of adults with IBD. The aim of the study was to determine the abomasal emptying rate (AER) of calves suffering from naturally occurring diarrhoea compared with that of healthy calves. Furthermore, the effects of an oral rehydration solution (ORS) mixed into milk replacer on the AER were determined. Acetaminophen absorption test (APAT) was performed to estimate the AER. Sixty Holstein–Frisian calves (age < 14 days) were included in the study and divided into groups as follows: healthy calves (H; n = 16), healthy calves fed with ORS (HORS; n = 14), diarrhoeic calves (D; n = 15) and diarrhoeic calves fed with ORS (DORS; n = 15). For the APAT, the calves were fed 2 L of milk replacer containing 50 mg acetaminophen (AP)/kg body weight. Venous blood samples were collected before and after milk replacer and AP intake in 30–60 min intervals for 12 hr. During the APAT, no significant differences in median maximum acetaminophen concentration (Cmax) were observed among all groups. Time to reach maximum acetaminophen concentration (Tmax) in DORS (median 390 min, 25/75 quartiles: 300/480 min) was significantly higher compared with that in H (median: 270 min 25/75 quartiles: 210/315 min) and HORS (median: 300 min (25/75 quartiles: 240/360 min). Non‐linear regression revealed that the calculated abomasal half‐life (AP t1/2) tended to be delayed in DORS (median: 652 min, 25/75 quartiles: 445/795 min, p =.10). The area under the AP curve values (AUC) from 0 to 120 min and 0 to 240 min of the observation period were significantly higher in H than D and DORS. In conclusion, significant differences in the AER indices reflected delayed abomasal emptying in diarrhoeic calves. Furthermore, the hypertonic ORS tended to have an additive delaying impact on the AER, which needs attention for the feeding management of diarrhoeic calves. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Shock wave treatment ( SWT) was shown to induce regeneration of ischaemic myocardium via Toll-like receptor 3 ( TLR3). The antimicrobial peptide LL37 gets released by mechanical stress and is known to form complexes with nucleic acids thus activating Toll-like receptors. We suggested that SWT in the acute setting prevents from the development of heart failure via RNA/protein release. Myocardial infarction in mice was induced followed by subsequent SWT. Heart function was assessed 4 weeks later via transthoracic echocardiography and pressure-volume measurements. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells ( HUVECs) were treated with SWT in the presence of RNase and proteinase and analysed for proliferation, tube formation and LL37 expression. RNA release and uptake after SWT was evaluated. We found significantly improved cardiac function after SWT. SWT resulted in significantly higher numbers of capillaries and arterioles and less left ventricular fibrosis. Supernatants of treated cells activated TLR3 reporter cells. Analysis of the supernatant revealed increased RNA levels. The effect could not be abolished by pre-treatment of the supernatant with RNase, but only by a sequential digestion with proteinase and RNase hinting strongly towards the involvement of RNA/protein complexes. Indeed, LL37 expression as well as cellular RNA uptake were significantly increased after SWT. We show for the first time that SWT prevents from left ventricular remodelling and cardiac dysfunction via RNA/protein complex release and subsequent induction of angiogenesis. This report describes the identification of a merchant mariner who perished in 1948 when Northwest Airlines Flight 4422, a DC-4 carrying 24 seamen and six crew members crashed into Mount Sanford, Alaska. Fifty-one years later, a human forearm and hand were found close by the wreckage of the plane, prompting identification efforts using DNA and fingerprints. There were significant challenges to both the fingerprint and DNA analyses. The hand was badly desiccated, making fingerprint friction-ridge detail almost invisible and the remains had been embalmed upon discovery, making DNA amplification difficult. We present the results of an interdisciplinary approach that successfully addressed these challenges and ultimately led to the identification of the remains. These efforts relied on efficient fingerprint rejuvenation and imaging techniques that improved print resolution, as well as new DNA extraction techniques optimized for aggressively embalmed remains. SUMMARY This article explores the determinants of road traffic crash fatalities in India. In addition to income, the analysis considers the sociodemographic population structure, motorization levels, road and health infrastructure and road rule enforcement as potential factors. An original panel data set covering 25 Indian states is analyzed using multivariate regression analysis. Time and state fixed-effects account for unobserved heterogeneity across states and time. The rising motorization, urbanization and accompanying increase in the share of vulnerable road users, that is, pedestrians and two-wheelers, are the major drivers of road traffic crash fatalities in India. Among vulnerable road users, women form a particularly high-risk group. Higher expenditure per police officer is associated with a lower fatality rate. The results suggest that India should focus, in particular, on road infrastructure investments that allow the separation of vulnerable from other road users on improved road rule enforcement and should pay special attention to vulnerable female road users. This paper investigates the patterns of capital entry barriers and capital returns in informal micro and small enterprises (MSEs) using a unique micro dataset for seven West African countries. Our findings support the view of a heterogeneous informal sector that is not primarily host to subsistence activities. While an assessment of initial investment identifies some informal activities with negligible entry barriers, a notable cost of entry is associated with most activities. We find very heterogeneous patterns of capital returns in informal MSEs. At very low levels of capital, marginal returns are extremely high-often exceeding 70 percent per month. Above a capital stock of 150 International Dollars, marginal returns are found to be relatively low at around 4-7 percent monthly. We provide some evidence that the high returns at low capital stocks reflect high risks. At the same time, most MSEs appear to be severely capital constrained. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In contrast to health shocks, mortality shocks do not only induce direct costs such as medical and funeral expenses and possibly income loss, but also reduce the number of consumption units in the household. Using data from Indonesia, it is shown that the economic costs related to the death of children and older persons seem to be fully compensated for by the decrease in consumption units. In contrast, when prime-age adults die, survivors face additional costs and, in consequence, use coping strategies. The inflammatory bowel diseases have undergone an explosion of discovery in the last 10 years. The overwhelming focus of this has been in genetics and immune mechanisms of disease. While the former has provided critical information on predisposing factors, the latter has resulted in a panoply of novel immune-based therapies and technologies. These range from an improved approach to the use of conventional immunomodulators, such as azathioprine and 6-mercaptopurine, to commonplace availability of anti-tumor necrosis factor agents such as infliximab and adalimumab, through to small molecule inhibition of immune mediators. Unusual treatments, such as helminth infestation, stem cell transplantation, and leucocytapheresis, all derive from the burgeoning understanding of pathogenesis. Most important to our successful use of these therapies will be a fundamental understanding of the patient phenotypes and genotypes that will dictate particular treatment approaches in the future. The positive transcription elongation factor b (P-TEFb) is a heterodimeric complex composed of cyclin-dependent kinase 9 and its regulator cyclin T1/2. It stimulates transcription elongation by phosphorylation of serine 2 residues in the carboxy-terminal domain of polymerase II. 7SK RNA and HEXIM proteins can antagonize transcriptional stimulation by sequestering P-TEFb in a catalytically inactive ribonucleoprotein (RNP). Here, we show that the previously uncharacterized La-related protein 7 (LARP7) has a role in 7SK-mediated regulation of transcription. LARP7 binds to the highly conserved 3′-terminal U-rich stretch of 7SK RNA and is an integral part of the 7SK RNP. On stimulation, LARP7 remains associated with 7SK RNA, whereas P-TEFb is released. Interestingly, reduction of LARP7 by RNA interference enhances transcription from cellular polymerase II promoters, as well as a TAT-dependent HIV-1 promoter. We show how to account for differentials in demographic variables, in particular mortality, when performing welfare comparisons over time. The idea is to apply various ways of “correcting” estimated income distribution measures for “sample selection” due to differential mortality. We distinguish the direct effect of mortality, i.e. individuals who die leave the population and no longer contribute to monetary welfare, from the indirect effect, i.e. the impact on survivors in the deceased's household who may experience a decrease or increase in monetary welfare. In the case of Indonesia, we show that the direct and indirect effects of mortality on income distribution have opposite signs, but are roughly the same in magnitude. Moreover, the effects of other demographic changes dominate the effects of mortality, whether direct or indirect. However, in the post-crisis period these demographic changes also explain a substantial part of the overall change in the distribution of income. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study examined the role of myosin light chain kinase (MLCK), PKC isozymes, and inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP3) receptor in the positive inotropic effect of α1-adrenergic stimulation in atrial myocardium.We measured inotropic effects of phenylephrine (0.3–300 μM) in isolated left atrial preparations (1 Hz, 37°C, 1.8 mM Ca2+, 0.3 μM nadolol) from male 8-week FVB mice (n=200). Phenylephrine concentration-dependently increased force of contraction from 1.5±0.1 to 2.8±0.1 mN (mean±s.e.m., n=42), which was associated with increased MLC-2a phosphorylation at serine 21 and 22 by 67% and translocation of PKCɛ but not PKCα to membrane (+30%) and myofilament (+50%) fractions.MLCK inhibition using ML-7 or wortmannin right-shifted the concentration–response curve of phenylephrine, reducing its inotropic effect at 10 μM by 73% and 81%, respectively.The compound KIE1-1 (500 nM), an intracellularly acting PKCɛ translocation inhibitor peptide, prevented PKCɛ translocation and augmented the maximal inotropic effect of phenylephrine by 40%. In contrast, inhibition of Ca2+-dependent PKC translocation (KIC1-1, 500 nM) had no effect. Abstract: As known from patients with pulsatile ventricular assist devices (VADs), early mobilization, physical exercise, and return to normal life are essential for optimal recovery. Recently, implantable rotary pumps became available for extended left ventricular support as bridges to transplantation. Modified procedures are essential for patient training and hospital discharge. The MicroMed-DeBakey VAD was implanted in 10 patients with end-stage heart disease. After recovery, regular ergometer training was performed with loads adapted to the patient's condition. Procedures for patient observation under outdoor conditions and a blood pressure measuring device for low pulse pressure conditions were developed. Improvement of physical condition was achieved in 8 patients. In the first 2 patients, exercise capacity was limited due to flow obstruction. In the following patients, an increase of workload on the ergometer up to 120 W was observed. Correlated with training, lactate/load relationship and heart rate decreased. Three patients were discharged from the hospital during support. The DeBakey-VAD system can support patients for extended time periods and is suitable for recovery and exercise. Previous reports raised concern about the prognosis of patients with sinus node (SN) dysfunction after cardiac transplantation and led to a low threshold for permanent pacemaker (PM) placement at most institutions. The present study addresses the survival in patients with normal and impaired post operative SN function and the effect of permanent pacing with respect to overall and cardiac mortality. There were 120 patients with normal (corrected SN recovery time < 520 ms, group I) and 47 patients with impaired SN function (corrected SN recovery time > 520 ms and/or sinus arrest ± escape rhythms). Pacing support was deemed unnecessary in 23 of 47 patients with SN dysfunction (group II; asymptomatic SN bradycardia and corrected SN recovery time 3,812 ± 5,800 ms) while a total of 24 patients had PM placement a mean of 29 ± 44 days after transplantation (symptomatic bradycardia or absence of sinus rhythm at discharge, group III). Patients were followed for a mean of 46.7 months. Thirty-five deaths occurred during the study period. Sixteen deaths were cardiac but none were causally related to the SN dysfunction (graft failure due to rejection or atheropathy n =14; myocardial infarction n = 2). Four of these cardiac deaths were sudden and all occurred in the presence of widespread structural abnormalities (rejection/vasculopathy/myocardial infarction). SN dysfunction was not related to overall (P = 0.25) or cardiac mortality (P = 0.33). Regarding either endpoint, patients who had permanent PM placement did no better than their unpaced counterparts in group II (P = 0.53 and P = 0.33. overall and cardiac mortality, respectively). Likewise, survival did not differ between groups I and III for either endpoint (P = 0.77, P = 0.65, respectively). These data suggest that patients with mild SN abnormality, who are in sinus rhythm at the time of discharge, can be followed by observation without specific therapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The chronotropic response during graded, symptom limited exercise was investigated in 32 cardiac transplant recipients a mean of 49 ± 18 days after transplantation. Ail patients had systematic evaluation of postoperative donor sinus node (SN) function and the cardioacceleratory response was compared according to the SN /unction. Twenty-one patients had normal postoperative SN studies (corrected SN recovery time < 520 msec, group I) while the SN function was impaired postoperatively in the remainder (n = 11, group H, corrected SN recovery time 4,149 ± 6,283 msec in 5 patients, junctionai escape rhythm in 6 patients). All patients had regained sinus rhythm at time of the exercise test. Patients in group II had lower basal sinus rates at the beginning of exercise (91.5 ± 11 vs 101.4 ± 7 beats/min, P < 0.02). This lower chronotropy was maintained over every incremental step [Frate between groups = 30, P = 0.0001, Frate vs workload = 15,P = 0.0001 by two-way ANOVA] and resulted in a significantly lower heart rate at individual peak exercise (108.3 ± 20 vs 124.2 ± 13 beats/min, P < 0.02). A total of 14/16 patients in group I but only 2/16 patients in group 11 accomplished a peak heart rate > 120 beats/min (P = 0.009). The workload achieved did not differ between the groups {107 ± 29 vs 102 ± 32 watts, P > 0.5). These data show a lower SN chronotropy during rest and at peak exercise in cardiac transplant recipients with postoperative SN deficiency and apparent normalization of SN function. Saliva is an attractive sampling matrix for measuring various endogenous and exogeneous substances but requires sample treatment prior to chromatographic analysis. Exploiting supercritical CO2 for both extraction and chromatography simplifies sample preparation, reduces organic solvent consumption, and minimizes exposure to potentially infectious samples, but has not yet been applied to oral fluid. Here, we demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of online supercritical fluid extraction coupled to supercritical fluid chromatography and single‐quadrupole mass spectrometry for monitoring the model salivary tracer caffeine. A comparison of 13C‐ and 32S‐labeled internal standards with external standard calibration confirmed the superiority of stable isotope‐labeled caffeine over nonanalogous internal standards. As proof of concept, the validated method was applied to saliva from a magnetic resonance imaging study of gastric emptying. After administration of 35 mg caffeine via ice capsule, salivary levels correlated with magnetic resonance imaging data, corroborating caffeine's usefulness as tracer of gastric emptying (R2 = 0.945). In contrast to off‐line methods, online quantification required only minute amounts of organic solvents and a single manual operation prior to online bioanalysis of saliva, thus demonstrating the usefulness of CO2‐based extraction and separation techniques for potentially infective biomatrices.
