Human visual memory capacity has a rapid developmental progression. Here we examine whether image semantics modulate this progression. We assessed the performance of children (6–14 years) and young adults (19–36 years) on a visual memory task using real‐world (or meaningful) as well as abstract image sets, which were matched in low‐level image attributes. For real images, we find comparable performance across the two age groups, consistent with previously reported results. However, for abstract images, we find a clear age‐related difference indicating greater reliance of children's memory processes on semantics, suggesting that strategies for encoding abstract patterns keep improving even into late childhood. We complemented these studies with computational experiments designed to examine the role of increasing experience with real‐world images on real and abstract image encoding, to examine whether the observed age‐related differences, as well as the general privilege of real over abstract images, can emerge directly through experience with meaningful images. Our results provide support for this possibility and set the stage for a finer‐grained investigation of the timeline along which children's memory capacity for abstract images reaches adult levels. Judgments of facial attractiveness invariably accompany our perception of faces. Even neonates appear to be capable of making such judgments in a manner consistent with adults. This suggests that the processes supporting facial attractiveness require little, if any, visual experience to manifest. Here we investigate the resilience of these processes to several years of early‐onset visual deprivation. Specifically, we study whether congenitally blind children treated several years after birth possess the ability to rate facial attractiveness in a manner congruent to normally sighted individuals. The data reveal significant individual variability in the way each newly sighted child perceives attractiveness. This is in marked contrast to data from normally sighted controls who exhibit strong across‐subject agreement in facial attractiveness ratings. This variability may be attributable, in part, to atypical facial encoding strategies used by the newly sighted children. Overall, our results suggest that the development of facial attractiveness perception is likely to be vulnerable to early visual deprivation, pointing to the existence of a possible sensitive period early in the developmental trajectory. Inflammation has a significant effect on bone remodeling and can result in bone loss via increased stimulation of osteoclasts. Activated immunoglobulins, especially autoantibodies, can increase osteoclastogenesis and are associated with pathological bone loss. Whether immunoglobulins and mature B lymphocytes are important for general bone architecture has not been completely determined. Here we demonstrate, using a transgenic mouse model, that reduction of mature B cells and immunoglobulins leads to increased trabecular bone mass compared to wild‐type (WT) littermate controls. This bone effect is associated with a decrease in the number of osteoclasts and reduced bone resorption, despite decreased expression of osteoprotegerin. We also demonstrate that the reduction of mature B cells and immunoglobulins do not prevent bone loss caused by estrogen deficiency or arthritis compared to WT littermate controls. In conclusion, the reduction of mature B cells and immunoglobulins results in disturbed regulation of trabecular bone turnover in healthy conditions but is dispensable for pathological bone loss. © 2022 The Authors. Industrial effluents contaminated sites may serve as repositories of ecologically adapted efficient pyrene degrading bacteria. In the present study, six bacterial isolates from industrial effluents were purified using serial enrichment technique and their pyrene degrading potential on pyrene supplemented mineral salt medium was assessed. 16S rRNA sequence analysis showed that they belong to four bacterial genera, namely Acinetobacter, Bacillus, Microbacterium, and Ochrobactrum. Among these isolates, Bacillus megaterium YB3 showed considerably good growth and was further evaluated for its pyrene-degrading efficiency. B. megaterium YB3 could degrade 72.44% of 500 mg L−1 pyrene within 7 days. GC-MS analysis of ethyl acetate extracted fractions detected two relatively less toxic metabolic intermediates of the pyrene degradation pathway. B. megaterium YB3 also tested positive for catechol 1, 2-dioxygenase and aromatic-ring-hydroxylating dioxygenase indole-indigo conversion assays. Considering the ability and efficiency of B. megaterium YB3 to degrade high pyrene content, the strain can be used as a tool to develop bioremediation technologies for the effective biodegradation of pyrene and possibly other PAHs in the environment. Combining graphene with plasmonic nanostructures is currently being explored for high sensitivity biochemical detection based on the surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) effect. Here, a novel and tunable platform for understanding SERS based on graphene monolayers transferred on arrays of split ring resonators (SRRs) exhibiting resonances in the visible range is introduced. Raman enhancement factors per area of graphene of up to 75 are measured, demonstrating the strong plasmonic coupling between graphene and the metamaterial resonances. Apart from the incident laser light, both the photoluminescence signal emitted by the SRRs and the Raman scattered light from graphene contribute to the excitation of distinct resonances, resulting in different SERS. This new perspective allows control of SERS in the case of graphene on plasmonic metamaterials or nanostructures and potentially paves the way towards an advanced SERS substrate that could lead to the detection of single molecules attached to graphene in future biochemical sensing devices.
