Chronic immune stimulation such as Helicobacter pylori (hp) infection, Sjögren’s syndrome or coeliac disease may initiate non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). The opposite (appearance of autoimmunity) has also been reported. The aim of this study was to describe the pattern of these immune markers in patients with lymphoid malignancies. Sera from 96 patients with NHL (median age 72, range 38–88, F/M 41/55) were analysed with ELISA to determine the frequency of antibodies against guinea pig (gp) and human recombinant (hr) transglutaminase type 2 (Tg2), and hr factor XIII subunit a* (part of the Tg-family), extractable nuclear antigen (ENA), and hp. As hp antibodies decrease in younger age cohorts a sex- and age-matched control group of 768 persons was used. The control population for transglutaminase antibodies consisted of 59 blood donors, (median 42 years, range 19–65) was analysed with a commercial kit. Gp-Tg2-IgG positivity was documented in 72% and hr-Tg2-IgG positivity in 15% (5% positive controls for both; P < 0.001 and ns, respectively). For IgA 3% had gp-Tg2 and 4% hr-Tg2 (5% in controls: ns for both). Anti-FXIII-IgA positivity was found in 22% (5% in controls; P = 0.03). Unspecific anti-ENA-IgG positivity was found in 24% ( P < 0.001), while only 2% had specific ENA autoantibodies. Moreover, 36% were positive for anti-hp-IgG, while controls were positive in 54% ( P < 0.001). The frequency of unspecific autoantibodies was increased. No differences could be noted in specific autoantibodies (hr-Tg2-IgA). In contrast, fewer than expected were anti-hp-positive. A defective immune response, similar to that in autoimmune diseases, could contribute to the pathogenesis of lymphoid malignancies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article aims to clarify the mechanisms for wetting in general and the influence from the detailed geometry in particular. A porous pore-doublet model is studied in order to determine if an overflow of liquid can explain a leading flow in the smaller capillaries, and at which conditions it takes place. The article presents the outcome of the three experiments conducted as well as theoretical calculations on this generic geometry which show that the leading front can be in the smaller capillary, as well as in the larger one.

Analyses of changes in vegetation were carried out after three, seven and ten years of fertilizer addition, warming and light attenuation in two subarctic, alpine dwarf shrub heaths. One site was just above the tree line, at ca 450 m a.s.l., and the other at a much colder fell-field at ca 1150 m altitude. The aim was to investigate how the treatments affected the abundance of different species and growth forms over time, including examinations of transient changes. Grasses, which increased in abundance by fertilizer addition, and cryptogams, which, by contrast, decreased by fertilizer addition and warming, were the most sensitive functional groups to the treatments at both sites. Nutrient addition exerted a stronger and more consistent effect than both shading and warming. Warming at the fell-field had slightly greater effect than at the warmer tree line with an increase in deciduous shrubs. The decreased abundance of mosses and lichens to fertilizer addition and/or warming was most likely an indirect treatment effect, caused by competition through increased abundance and overgrowth of grasses. Such changes in species composition are likely to alter decomposition rates and the water and energy exchange at the soil surface. We observed few, if any, transient effects of declining responses during the 10 yr of treatments. Instead, there were many cumulative effects of the treatments for all functional groups and many interactions between time and treatment, suggesting that once a change in community composition is triggered, it will continue with unchanged or accelerated rate for a long period of time. The article presents an abstract of the study "Involvement of Tyrosine Kinase in Calmidazolium-Induced Phospholipase Dactivation in SH-SY5Y Cells." The study will be presented at a joint meeting of the International Society for Neurochemistry and the European Society for Neurochemistry which will be organized in Berlin, Germany between August 8 to 14, 1999. The study found that phospholipase D activation by calmodulin antagonists may be regulated tyrosine kinases.

We report the findings of a multi-language and multi-lab investigation of young infants' ability to discriminate lexical tones as a function of their native language, age and language experience, as well as of tone properties. Given the high prevalence of lexical tones across human languages, understanding lexical tone acquisition is fundamental for comprehensive theories of language learning. While there are some similarities between the developmental course of lexical tone perception and that of vowels and consonants, findings for lexical tones tend to vary greatly across different laboratories. To reconcile these differences and to assess the developmental trajectory of native and non-native perception of tone contrasts, this study employed a single experimental paradigm with the same two pairs of Cantonese tone contrasts (perceptually similar vs. distinct) across 13 laboratories in Asia-Pacific, Europe and North-America testing 5-, 10- and 17-month-old monolingual (tone, pitch-accent, non-tone) and bilingual (tone/non-tone, non-tone/non-tone) infants. Across the age range and language backgrounds, infants who were not exposed to Cantonese showed robust discrimination of the two non-native lexical tone contrasts. Contrary to this overall finding, the statistical model assessing native discrimination by Cantonese-learning infants failed to yield significant effects. These findings indicate that lexical tone sensitivity is maintained from 5 to 17 months in infants acquiring tone and non-tone languages, challenging the generalisability of the existing theoretical accounts of perceptual narrowing in the first months of life. Phosphatidylethanol (PEth) is formed only in the presence of ethanol, via the action of phospholipase D. We studied PEth in blood as a possible marker of alcohol abuse in 15 male alcoholics admitted for detoxification. Blood was drawn on the first day after admission and up to 28 days thereafter. PEth in whole blood was 13.2 +/- 2.2 mumol liter-1 (mean +/- SE) at first sampling and remained detectable up to 14 days after admission. Blood ethanol was 0 on the morning after admission. The time courses of PEth disappearance varied among individuals. No PEth could be found in blood of control persons who had abstained from ethanol for 4 days. Levels of PEth and carbohydrate-deficient transferrin or gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase did not correlate. Its high specificity and prolonged detectability suggest PEth in blood as a marker of recent alcohol abuse.

Phospholipase D has been shown to be a key enzyme in the signal transduction systems involved in neutrophil activation. In the presence of ethanol, the enzyme catalyzes a transphosphatidylation reaction through which phosphatidylethanol is formed instead of the normal product phosphatidic acid. The effects of ethanol on the formation of phosphatidylethanol and phosphatidic acid was studied in neutrophils from human alcoholics in vitro. Neutrophils were isolated and cellular lipids were labeled with [3H]oleate, whereafter the cells were preincubated with cytochalasin B. Subsequently, cells were stimulated with the chemotactic peptide formyl-Met-Leu-Phe in the presence of ethanol concentration ranging from 0 to 200 mM. In the presence of ethanol, both neutrophils from alcoholics and controls produced phosphatidylethanol, with a concomitant reduction of the production of phosphatidic acid. The amounts of phosphatidyl-ethanol and phosphatidic acid formed were dependent on the concentration of ethanol. In neutrophils from alcoholics, a higher apparent Km for the phospholipase D-mediated transphosphatidylation reaction was noted (58 mM ethanol compared with 28 mM in controls). The in vivo mass of phosphatidylethanol in recently drinking alcoholics was also analyzed in neutrophils. Measurable phosphatidyl-ethanol levels (average 5.6 pmol/10(8) neutrophils) were found in alcoholics up to 23 hr after the last intake of ethanol. Thus, in addition to the ethanol-induced changes in the normal production of phosphatidic acid, phosphatidylethanol accumulated in vivo in alcoholics may be expected to influence neutrophil function.
