Classical humanistic philosophy and psychology both infer the persistence of a stable, authentic, and volitional self, which neither fully coheres with the values implicit to professional counseling nor offers sufficient relevance to culturally diverse client groups. As an alternative, the authors suggest that humanistic counseling can emerge as a distinct discipline of practice independent of its early influences. Further, the authors offer a dialogical alternative for humanistic counseling practice that might better support contemporary clients and their various social determinants of experience. This article examines the introduction of "sensitivity training" to 1970s Swedish work life. Drawing upon a range of empirical materials, I explore the politics that were involved in the process of translating and adapting this group dynamic method to the Swedish context and consider how its proponents argued for its value. By approaching sensitivity training as an attempt to govern, shape, and regulate both human beings and the work organizations of which they were a part, I argue that sensitivity training presents an unexpectedly early example of a governing rationality that has elsewhere been described and theorized as "neoliberal." The fact that sensitivity training was established in Swedish work life already in the early 1970s thus challenges the historiography of neoliberal modes of government, which have elsewhere been associated with a neoliberal shift in state policies occurring in the 1980s and 1990s. The article demonstrates how emotionally liberating practices in the late 1960s and early 1970s were embraced by some of the most politically influential actors in contemporary Swedish society, such as the corporate sector and the trade unions. As blue‐collar trade unions and social democrats voiced increasingly far‐reaching demands concerning workplace democracy and improved workplace conditions, advocates of sensitivity training presented their method as crucial to the process of "democratizing" and "humanizing" Swedish work life. Intimately associated with the new therapies of humanistic psychology, sensitivity training was used within the corporate sector to foster a more emotional and authentic leadership style that would embrace the values of emotional awareness, self‐expression, and self‐actualization. The crying boss emerged in this context as a key figure in the project of creating a "democratic" and psychologically satisfying organization. Yet, sensitivity training was also described as a means for companies to make better use of what was now asserted as their most important economic asset: the human being. From the outset, the idealistic vision of an emotionally liberated, democratic workplace was thus entangled with a specific kind of economic rationality, in which the emotionally liberated, self‐actualizing individual emerged as a capital or asset that would be better utilized if the organization allowed—even encouraged—employees to engage in their own well‐being and self‐optimization. This essay considers how the JRE has engaged Catholic ethics in the last 50 years and how the concerns of Catholic ethics during this period of exceptional change are reflected and developed in the JRE. It discusses the transformation of Catholic ethics by focusing on the transitions: (i) from classical to historical consciousness; (ii) from an essentialist concept of human nature to a dynamic concept of the moral subject; (iii) from abstract to contextual moral reason; and (iv) from a discourse that ignored the politics of power to one that reckons with it, analyzing the distinct ways in which the JRE engaged with these transformations. It concludes by looking to the future and suggests that a deeper engagement with the breadth of Catholic ethics internationally may help advance the Journal's mission and that a fuller interaction with the comparative and humanistic dimensions of the JRE's mission will enhance Catholic ethics. In this article, three scholars comment on Fischer and Guzel's (2023) method dialog. The process included initial open discussions between the authors and a number of reviewers. Then commentators provide interpretation and guidance on the published version. All three comments applaud the clear justification for qualitative research and guidance on how it should be enacted, but differ on how JCP readers should prioritize and evaluate quantitative research. Craig Thompson takes a broad philosophy of science perspective building on the inseparability from the topics that are qualitatively studied. That ontology focuses on a context-based deep understanding of the individual's history, society, and environment. In his role as Associate Editor for JCP, he is uniquely qualified to expand the focus at JCP to be more in line with fields like cognitive anthropology or cultural psychology that accept qualitative and quantitative research. David Mick for his part examines the dialogue from a perspective of psychology broadly defined, generating examples from leaders in analytical and humanistic psychology such as Freud, Maslow, and Rogers. Citing his own qualitative work, he acknowledges difficulties with replication, but recommends case-based replication within the norms of qualitative research. Finally, Stijn van Osselaer applauds the way qualitative research provides insights that are difficult or impossible to gather using quantitative methods. He encourages (1) quantitative researchers to adopt qualitative researchers' focus on induction and abduction, (2) quantitative researchers to incorporate qualitative studies in their quantitative articles, and (3) both qualitative and quantitative researchers to speak to each other's literatures. This article discusses the book "Christopher Dawson: A Cultural Mind in the Age of the Great War" by Tracey Rowland. Objective: To identify discrete clusters of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients based on symptoms and investigate differences across clusters. Methods: Data were collected in the US and 5 European countries via the Adelphi Real World Lupus Disease Specific Programme, a cross‐sectional survey. Rheumatologists provided data for 5 consecutively consulting adult patients with SLE, who were invited to participate. Identified SLE symptoms were reduced to factors based on commonly concurrent symptoms, using principal‐component factor analysis. Factors were used as covariates in a latent‐class cluster analysis to identify discrete patient clusters. Patient‐reported outcomes and physician‐reported data were compared across clusters. Results: Among 1,376 patients, 87% were female and 74% were White. We identified 4 patient clusters (very mild, mild, moderate, and severe) based on 39 signs/symptoms. Physician‐reported symptom burden, organ involvement, disease activity, and the number of flares increased with increasing cluster severity (P < 0.0001). Patient‐reported impact (health status, fatigue, work productivity impairment, anxiety/depression, and emotional impact) increased with increasing cluster severity (P < 0.0001). Glucocorticoid and immunosuppressant use increased, and antimalarial use decreased, with increasing cluster severity. In all clusters, <20% of patients received biologics; >15% of patients not receiving biologics were considered eligible for treatment by their physician. The proportion of physicians and patients satisfied with treatment decreased with increasing cluster severity (P < 0.0001). Conclusion: Our large, international, real‐world survey of SLE patients and physicians demonstrated strong associations between increased impairment, organ involvement, and humanistic burden in SLE, highlighting an unmet need for effective treatment options in patients with high disease activity. This article outlines the origin and evolution of one of the most influential design thinking perspectives in the Innovation Management discourse. This study addresses two significant criticisms of design thinking, namely, theoretical grounding and construct clarity. It also illustrates how this humanistic and creative design practice transcended into a comprehensive Innovation Management approach, facilitating entrepreneurship and innovation. Our research analyzes the evolution of the design philosophy and practices developed at Stanford University from 1957 to 2005 through document analysis. We identified design qualities that have been consistent over the decades, providing further construct clarity and insights on managing Design‐driven Innovation. These design qualities elucidate design thinking as a cognitive process, creative practice, organizational routine, and design culture. They emphasize finding profound needs and problems and translate them into tangible designs, creating value for people. This design philosophy is deeply rooted in humanistic psychology theories, particularly on creativity and human values. Collaborations between psychologists, industrial researchers, and designers created this creative and human‐centered design approach, known today as design thinking. This value‐driven innovation offers a humanistic perspective on innovation theory and practice. It also offers an Innovation Management schema of design qualities essential for developing Design‐driven Innovation capabilities in organizations and educational institutions. We emphasize that developing a creative design culture in which people have the human values, abilities, and confidence to collaboratively identify continuous emerging problems and needs and contribute through tangible designs generates an era of innovation and is essentially innovation management. In this paper, I aim to convey the history of ecopsychology's changing conceptualizations of science and technology and their role in facilitating engagement with the ecology movement. To do so, I compare ecopsychology's treatment of science and technology in two important publications: Gatherings, a non‐peer‐reviewed digital journal of the early 2000s that portrayed ecopsychology in humanistic, socially critical, and artistic terms; and Ecopsychology, a scholarly journal founded in 2009 that regarded ecopsychological questions as testable hypotheses, and distinguished itself from prior ("first generation") ecopsychology on the basis of its embrace of technological progress and the scientific method. As a part of this shift, ecopsychologists of the "second generation" championed the notion that humans are a "Technological Species," an ontological statement that naturalized the increasing sophistication of high technology as the result of inherent human drives, and established conceptual groundwork for studies that used consumer technology such as computers to mediate experiences of nature. In the final part of the paper, I critique the "Technological Species" proposition for obscuring the historical and material conditions that make the existence of consumer technology possible, such as the ecologically devastating mining of rare‐earth metals on colonized land in Central and South America. I argue that, to be socially and ecologically accountable, ecopsychology should turn toward practices that help us make sense of consumer technology's place in systems of colonialist and ecological violence, process our place within these systems as users of consumer technology, and build community less dependent on technology. Objective: Self‐transcendence is the experience of feeling connected to something greater than oneself. Previous studies have shown high scores on self‐transcendence are associated with well‐being and other psychological benefits, but have rarely examined the lived experiences of highly self‐transcendent people. Method: Black and White men and women in late‐midlife completed Life Story Interviews and self‐report measures of self‐transcendence. In Study 1 (N = 144, Mage = 56.4), we used grounded theory methodology to differentiate the stories told by participants scoring either extremely high or extremely low on self‐transcendence. In Study 2 (N = 125; Mage = 60.4), we created a quantitative coding scheme and scored 1,375 new life story scenes. Results: In Study 1, six narrative themes were identified (closure, interconnectedness, lifelong learning, secure attachment, self‐actualization, and spiritual pluralism) as part of a "humanistic growth story." In Study 2, four of the narrative themes were found to predict self‐transcendence scores with significant effect sizes of β =.26 to.47. Conclusions: In our sample, highly self‐transcendent individuals tended to narrate their lived experiences as spiritual journeys of humanistic growth. This article reveals and elucidates the multilayered significance of Heidegger's notion of going‐under (Untergang) that remain concealed in his three‐volume Ponderings written from 1931 to 1941 as well as in his other nonpublic manuscripts concerning the history of Beyng written around the same period of time. For Heidegger, our era is one of gigantic going‐under, and Europe is the actualization of the decline (Untergang) of the West. However, the going‐under is constitutive of the transition (Übergang) into the other inception. By labeling the going‐under as the necessary courage of the human being, Heidegger accentuates the primordial role which going‐under could play in the grounding of the truth of Beyng. In On the Inception of 1941, Heidegger considers that such notions as event, inception, abyss, going‐under, and tragedy all share meaningful resonances in the free‐playing space of the clearing as the abyss, and need be all pondered upon from out of the inceptual essence of the abyss. Echoing his reversal of the relation between the Nothing and Beyng, which is derived from his self‐criticisms of the Contributions to Philosophy of 1936–1938, Heidegger even speaks of the overcoming of Beyng while stressing the primordiality of the going‐under. In this essay, I argue that sociology programs should offer curricular opportunities for undergraduate students to study the actual mechanics of social change in the form of explicit training in the philosophies and practices of community organizing and direct action. That training, I assert, is separate from a content‐driven approach to the study of social movements, or the inclusion of community‐based research courses. Grounded in an analysis of the roots of the discipline of U.S. sociology as situated in the practice of empirically informed democratic engagement, I shift the focus away from a debate over whether or not critical pedagogy is, or should include, activism. Instead, I focus on the extent to which our students are, in practice, learning concrete organizing skills to change power relations, regardless of the content area or pedagogical style. In doing so, I bring back into the conversation a tradition that the profession seems to have forgotten, and think of ways in which contemporary sociology programs in the United States can better contribute to the advancement of a grassroots, or a humanistic public sociology. Background: Depression and anxiety are well‐recognized comorbid health conditions among adults with migraine due to their humanistic and economic burden. This review was conducted to systematically assess the humanistic and economic burden of comorbid depression and/or anxiety disorder among adults with migraine. Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted using MEDLINE and CINAHL via EBSCO, EMBASE, and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews via OVID. Studies evaluating the humanistic burden and the economic burden of comorbid depression and anxiety among adults with migraine that were published in peer‐reviewed English language journals from inception until January 2020 were included. Results: Out of the 640 identified articles, 23 studies were found eligible and included in this review. Regarding the humanistic burden, health‐related quality of life (HRQoL) was examined by 11 studies, 7 studies examined disability, while 2 studies evaluated both HRQoL and disability measures. These studies reported an association between depression and/or anxiety and lower HRQoL and higher disability among adults with migraine. Regarding the economic burden, only three studies were identified and all concluded that depression and/or anxiety are significantly associated with higher healthcare expenditures and utilization among adults with migraine. Conclusions: Results of this review highlight the substantial burden of depression and/or anxiety for adults with migraine. Objective: This case study describes one client's progression through goal‐focused positive psychotherapy (GFPP), a positive psychology inspired treatment. The study aims to contribute a more nuanced understanding of GFPP by illustrating the clinical use of approach goals, hope, positive emotion, and client strengths—interventions that constitute the heart of GFPP. Method: The case study methodology illuminates the 33‐session treatment of a self‐identified European‐American heterosexual female in her mid‐twenties, presenting with several interpersonal concerns, and symptoms of depression and anxiety. The client met the DSM 5 criteria for generalized anxiety disorder and borderline personality disorder. Results: Processes and outcomes are documented through clinician and client perceptions, and weekly assessments of symptomatology and subjective well‐being. Conclusions: The case study demonstrates a successful application of positive psychology consistent with GFPP's existential and humanistic psychology roots. The study should provide clinicians and theorists a greater understanding of GFPP processes and perspectives in an applied context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The absence of violence against children is a fundamental children's right and a major milestone of civilized society. Similarly, reports on incidences of violence by children and youth, including severe cases with devastating consequences, speak to the need that the trauma of exposure to violence in childhood needs to be addressed. While violence and its risk factors are generally understood, what is less clear are the essential protective factors, how we can identify those as early as possible, and how we can use them to prevent and address the trauma of violence exposure in children and youth. In this report, I review pathways of child and youth violence through the lens of social‐emotional development as a central protective factor. Negative emotions of frustration and anger can underlie violence and aggression. Kind emotions, such as caring and our ability to connect with others emotionally, can serve as social‐emotional protective factors. A brief review of the central social‐emotional processes and their development is provided, including the human capacity to feel with others and express empathy, be emotionally aware and care about the effects of one's own actions on others, and be able to regulate the self and their emotions. Given the negative widespread and long‐term impact of exposure to violence, I describe research‐informed attempts to prevent violence exposure across development. Taking a humanistic, strength‐based perspective, the focus is on social‐emotional protective factors to address violence and nurture mental health in every child. China's recent hukou reform provides opportunities for rural–urban migrants to acquire formal citizenship and for the country's urbanisation to step into a fair and humanistic stage. However, the between‐city variation in migrants' intention of hukou transfer and the heterogeneity of its influencing factors have rarely been examined. These research gaps make it impossible to the rationality and effectiveness of the localised hukou entry criteria formulated by city governments. In this paper, we addressed the gaps by using nationwide large‐sample survey data and a multilevel modelling approach with particular focus on the effects of city size. Results confirmed the higher willingness of migrants in larger cities for hukou transfer, which is in sharp contradiction with the small‐city orientation of the current hukou reform. Our findings further verified the greater preference of well‐educated migrants for large cities than less educated groups, implying an accelerated concentration of talents in leading cities. This research demonstrates the importance of the between‐city variation perspective in understanding the variegated thoughts of rural–urban migrants, the effectiveness of localised public policies, and the future of China's migrant‐dominated model of urbanisation. Through an exegesis of the dramatic elements of Plato's Laches, Brandon Buck and Rachel Longa argue that it is an especially valuable text to read with practicing and preservice teachers. Buck and Longa show how the dialogue illustrates three essential aspects of what education means and involves. First, they show how the dialogue foregrounds the often‐obscured role of philosophical inquiry in addressing educational questions. Second, they show how the depiction of aporia in the Laches underscores the importance of uncertainty for the persistence of humanistic conversation, and thus for substantial engagement with core educational questions. Finally, they interpret Socrates to suggest that participation in humanistic conversation is not merely an incidental aspect of education as a profession, but rather precisely what it means to be an educator. In sum, Buck and Longa argue that the Laches illustrates the core idea that in order to educate at all, we must be deeply involved in the very questions that characterize humanistic conversation. Background: Schools are commonly asked to take on roles that support the emotional well‐being of students. These practices are in line with humanistic education theory and can be difficult to fulfil by schools. Broader ecological pressures, such as periods of austerity, are likely to add to the difficulty in meeting students' needs. Aims: To explore whether professionals in schools believe that their work supporting pupils' emotional well‐being has changed as a consequence of the current period of austerity. Sample: This project reports the views of staff from three secondary schools in the North West of England. A purposive sample of 29 individuals, including members of the senior leadership team and newly qualified teachers, were involved. Methods: All participants were interviewed about their perceptions of the impact of a sustained period of austerity upon their work. The transcripts of these interviews were analysed using thematic analysis. Findings: Educational professionals associated wider socio‐political factors with a perceived increase in the need for emotional support of pupils. They reported taking on new roles and responsibilities to accommodate this and noted they are doing so with fewer resources and limited governmental support. Conclusions: This paper concludes that considering humanistic education theory alongside ecological theory helps to conceptualize how socio‐political factors can impact upon the emotional well‐being in schools. An ecologically informed humanistic framework is depicted based upon the findings of this project as a means of understanding how these two theories complement one another and interact. This paper argues against dismissing as 'populist nationalism' every positive view of one's nation and ignoring patriotism as its antithesis. The European nation exists in two senses: as a large 'social group', a community of real people, and as an abstract community of cultural values promoted by intellectual elites grounded in a humanities‐based education. The widespread prejudice that condemns every positive expression of one's relationship to the nation has proved counterproductive because it has prompted ever stronger spontaneous reactions in the form of primitive nationalistic egoism. This has weakened the commitment people feel towards their nation and the humanistic potential that the nation possesses as a cultural community of values. Consequently, anti‐national European intellectual elites bear some responsibility – along with those preaching neoliberal individualism – for the success of populist demagogues and the decline in patriotic values. Both of the participants in this dialogue are professors of German, and both were involved in recent efforts to develop Global Studies programs at their institutions. While one teaches at a small, private, liberal arts college and the other at a large, urban, public research university, both participated in these projects with the pragmatic desire to help boost enrollments in German classes and with the humanistic goal of situating deep cultural knowledge of German‐speaking countries and the German language within a broader global context. The topic of subjectivity has been treated peripherally by philosophy. It has appeared in philosophy not as a specific human phenomenon, but attached to other concepts without specifying its ontological definition, such as intersubjectivity, the place of the Other in the emergence of the self, consciousness and so forth. This paper reconstructs some of the overlooked moments and ideas of several classical philosophers, such as Marx, Dewey, Merleau Ponty, Cassirer and Foucault, in order to identify in their works important antecedents to advance a different concept of subjectivity. The concepts and questions which are raised by those philosophers and which are revived in this paper have remained overlooked both by philosophy and psychology because of the lack of any representation of subjectivity capable of making them more visible. The ontological monopoly of language and discourse in explaining all human phenomena, taken together with the critique of theoretical systems and of epistemology, has found in social constructionism its strongest expression in psychology. The value of theoretical systems in generating intelligibility about complex and configurational phenomena is recovered, along with the need to develop new epistemologies capable of generating intelligibility on such systems. This work introduces a novel damped fifth-order generalized integrator (DFOGI) based control algorithm for grid-integrated solar photovoltaic (PV) system. Moreover, for GMPPT (Global Maximum Power Point Tracking), HPO (Human Psychology Optimisation) algorithm is used. Here, a three-phase three wire, single-stage topology of grid-integrated partially shaded PV array is implemented. Global maximum power peak searching behavior of HPO algorithm is very rapid and accurate, which gives a satisfactory steady-state and dynamic performances, even in rapid solar irradiance change condition. The prime objective of proposed DFOGI control is to accurately transfer the solar power to the grid at unity power factor, even when grid suffers from abnormal and adverse conditions. During these conditions, on the grid side, the power quality is maintained, where the proposed control technique provides power factor correction, and harmonics mitigation. The proposed techniques are modeled, and their performances are verified experimentally on a developed prototype, in solar insolation variation conditions, as well as in different grid disturbances such as over and under-voltage, phase imbalance, harmonics distortion in the grid voltage etc. Test results have met the objectives of the proposed work and parameters are under the permissible limit, according to the IEEE-519 standard. One of the enduring missions of personality science is to unravel what it takes to become a fully functioning person. In the present article, the authors address this matter from the perspectives of self-determination theory (SDT) and personality systems interactions (PSI) theory. SDT (a) is rooted in humanistic psychology; (b) has emphasized a first-person perspective on motivation and personality; (c) posits that the person, supported by the social environment, naturally moves toward growth through the satisfaction of basic psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness. The authors report on the nature of assessing functional caregiving (FC) via three studies, conducted by a university-public preschool collaboration that was designed to measure mothers' confidence to care for children with intellectual disabilities in their homes. Caregiving of children with intellectual disabilities was conceptualized in terms of a task hierarchy that occurs in a complex, multi-level sociocultural ecology. Rating scale items were developed to survey mothers' caregiving confidence in this ecology, which were analyzed with a Rasch model. Raw ratings were transformed to an axiomatically strong, objective, unidimensional scale, and the obtained task difficulties conformed to a three-tier caregiving hierarchy of advocacy, personal caregiving, and community relations domains. Hierarchical regression of task difficulties on item components defined by FC domains was consistent with an ecological model (R2 > 0.60). The task hierarchy was also found to be consistent with humanistic psychology principles. When FC measurement properties were compared between suburban and urban mothers, as well as mothers of educationally at risk and special needs children, psychometric reliability was high (>0.90). Validity studies confirmed FC functional relations with mothers' health, age, and economic status. In general, these studies found that mothers' self-confidence measures were valid and reliable, but noted future studies are needed to link FC measures directly to competency and home caregiving quality. Future research should also explore replication of core items across other disabilities and chronic diseases, as well as applicability to objective caregiving standard setting. Defenders of the subset view of realization have claimed that we can resolve well-known worries about mental-physical causal overdetermination by holding that mental properties are subset realized by physical properties, that instances of subset realized properties are parts of physical realizers, and that part-whole overdetermination is unproblematic. I challenge the claim that the overdetermination generated by the subset view can be legitimated by appealing to more mundane part-whole overdetermination. Aims: The purpose of this commentary is to argue that the value of counselling and psychotherapy research lies, not only in what it teaches us as therapists, but also in its ability to challenge us and our assumptions. Method: The paper identifies eight beliefs that may be prevalent in sections of the counselling and psychotherapy community, and presents evidence that challenges them. Findings: While many of our beliefs may hold true for some clients some of the time, the research evidence suggests that they are unlikely to be true for all clients all of the time. Discussion: By questioning and challenging therapists' a priori assumptions, research findings can help counsellors and psychotherapists to be less set in their beliefs; and more open to the unique experiences, characteristics and wants of each individual client. Bibliometric results on the emergence and recent developmental trends of publications on positive psychology are presented within an outline of its precursors (i.e. humanistic psychology) and its special features in reference to humanistic psychology, health psychology, and developmental psychology. Terminological confusions (e.g. positivism indifferential psychology vs. in epistemology; positive psychology) in psychological databases are described and resolved in bibliometric analyses for the time period between 2000and 2008. The present results include findings reporting the incidence of multiple authorships, authors’ national institutional affiliations, the semantic network of publications on positive psychology, selected citation rates, and methodological classifications of the literature on positive psychology. With reference to PsycINFO, analyses show that publications on positive psychology increased markedly. Yet in comparison to other psychological subdisciplines and areas, literature output remains rather low. However,results on publication types and media point at a broad-range impact of positive psychology on various applied and basic psychological subdisciplines. The construct of self-awareness is highly valued by the counseling profession. However, the foundational assumptions that support this construct have not been systemically examined and critiqued. The author provides an overview of self-awareness in light of humanistic, psychoanalytic, and postmodernist ideologies. Can group counselling help patients who present with symptoms that cannot be explained medically? Preliminary results of working with one such group are reported. Six patients in a primary care practice were offered weekly sessions for half a year. The findings suggest that the patients attended all group sessions. The patients reported experiences known to be related to group counselling, and when the group ended, patient reports show that the severity of their problems was reduced significantly (p<.001). Furthermore, during the six months after the group ended patients significantly (p<.025) reduced their visits to their general practitioners.
