Deep learning is increasingly being proposed for detecting neurological and psychiatric diseases from electroencephalogram (EEG) data but the method is prone to inadvertently incorporate biases from training data and exploit illegitimate patterns. The recent demonstration that deep learning can detect the sex from EEG implies potential sex‐related biases in deep learning‐based disease detectors for the many diseases with unequal prevalence between males and females. In this work, we present the male‐ and female‐typical patterns used by a convolutional neural network that detects the sex from clinical EEG (81% accuracy in a separate test set with 142 patients). We considered neural sources, anatomical differences, and non‐neural artifacts as sources of differences in the EEG curves. Using EEGs from 1140 patients, we found electrocardiac artifacts to be leaking into the supposedly brain activity‐based classifiers. Nevertheless, the sex remained detectable after rejecting heart‐related and other artifacts. In the cleaned data, EEG topographies were critical to detect the sex, but waveforms and frequencies were not. None of the traditional frequency bands was particularly important for sex detection. We were able to determine the sex even from EEGs with shuffled time points and therewith completely destroyed waveforms. Researchers should consider neural and non‐neural sources as potential origins of sex differences in their data, they should maintain best practices of artifact rejection, even when datasets are large, and they should test their classifiers for sex biases. High‐density electroencephalography (HD‐EEG) is currently limited to laboratory environments since state‐of‐the‐art electrode caps require skilled staff and extensive preparation. We propose and evaluate a 256‐channel cap with dry multipin electrodes for HD‐EEG. We describe the designs of the dry electrodes made from polyurethane and coated with Ag/AgCl. We compare in a study with 30 volunteers the novel dry HD‐EEG cap to a conventional gel‐based cap for electrode‐skin impedances, resting state EEG, and visual evoked potentials (VEP). We perform wearing tests with eight electrodes mimicking cap applications on real human and artificial skin. Average impedances below 900 kΩ for 252 out of 256 dry electrodes enables recording with state‐of‐the‐art EEG amplifiers. For the dry EEG cap, we obtained a channel reliability of 84% and a reduction of the preparation time of 69%. After exclusion of an average of 16% (dry) and 3% (gel‐based) bad channels, resting state EEG, alpha activity, and pattern reversal VEP can be recorded with less than 5% significant differences in all compared signal characteristics metrics. Volunteers reported wearing comfort of 3.6 ± 1.5 and 4.0 ± 1.8 for the dry and 2.5 ± 1.0 and 3.0 ± 1.1 for the gel‐based cap prior and after the EEG recordings, respectively (scale 1–10). Wearing tests indicated that up to 3,200 applications are possible for the dry electrodes. The 256‐channel HD‐EEG dry electrode cap overcomes the principal limitations of HD‐EEG regarding preparation complexity and allows rapid application by not medically trained persons, enabling new use cases for HD‐EEG. Optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) are quickly widening the scopes of noninvasive neurophysiological imaging. The possibility of placing these magnetic field sensors on the scalp allows not only to acquire signals from people in movement, but also to reduce the distance between the sensors and the brain, with a consequent gain in the signal‐to‐noise ratio. These advantages make the technique particularly attractive to characterise sources of brain activity in demanding populations, such as children and patients with epilepsy. However, the technology is currently in an early stage, presenting new design challenges around the optimal sensor arrangement and their complementarity with other techniques as electroencephalography (EEG). In this article, we present an optimal array design strategy focussed on minimising the brain source localisation error. The methodology is based on the Cramér‐Rao bound, which provides lower error bounds on the estimation of source parameters regardless of the algorithm used. We utilise this framework to compare whole head OPM arrays with commercially available electro/magnetoencephalography (E/MEG) systems for localising brain signal generators. In addition, we study the complementarity between EEG and OPM‐based MEG, and design optimal whole head systems based on OPMs only and a combination of OPMs and EEG electrodes for characterising deep and superficial sources alike. Finally, we show the usefulness of the approach to find the nearly optimal sensor positions minimising the estimation error bound in a given cortical region when a limited number of OPMs are available. Modeling and experimental parameters influence the Electro‐ (EEG) and Magnetoencephalography (MEG) source analysis of the somatosensory P20/N20 component. In a sensitivity group study, we compare P20/N20 source analysis due to different stimulation type (Electric‐Wrist [EW], Braille‐Tactile [BT], or Pneumato‐Tactile [PT]), measurement modality (combined EEG/MEG – EMEG, EEG, or MEG) and head model (standard or individually skull‐conductivity calibrated including brain anisotropic conductivity). Considerable differences between pairs of stimulation types occurred (EW‐BT: 8.7 ± 3.3 mm/27.1° ± 16.4°, BT‐PT: 9 ± 5 mm/29.9° ± 17.3°, and EW‐PT: 9.8 ± 7.4 mm/15.9° ± 16.5° and 75% strength reduction of BT or PT when compared to EW) regardless of the head model used. EMEG has nearly no localization differences to MEG, but large ones to EEG (16.1 ± 4.9 mm), while source orientation differences are non‐negligible to both EEG (14° ± 3.7°) and MEG (12.5° ± 10.9°). Our calibration results show a considerable inter‐subject variability (3.1–14 mS/m) for skull conductivity. The comparison due to different head model show localization differences smaller for EMEG (EW: 3.4 ± 2.4 mm, BT: 3.7 ± 3.4 mm, and PT: 5.9 ± 6.8 mm) than for EEG (EW: 8.6 ± 8.3 mm, BT: 11.8 ± 6.2 mm, and PT: 10.5 ± 5.3 mm), while source orientation differences for EMEG (EW: 15.4° ± 6.3°, BT: 25.7° ± 15.2° and PT: 14° ± 11.5°) and EEG (EW: 14.6° ± 9.5°, BT: 16.3° ± 11.1° and PT: 12.9° ± 8.9°) are in the same range. Our results show that stimulation type, modality and head modeling all have a non‐negligible influence on the source reconstruction of the P20/N20 component. This work challenges the widely accepted model of sensory gating as a preattention inhibitory process by investigating whether attention directed at the second tone (S2) within a paired‐click paradigm could affect gating at the cortical level. We utilized magnetoencephalography, magnetic resonance imaging and spatio‐temporal source localization to compare the cortical dynamics underlying gating responses across two conditions (passive and attention) in 19 healthy subjects. Source localization results reaffirmed the existence of a fast processing pathway between the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and bilateral superior temporal gyri (STG) that underlies the auditory gating process. STG source dynamics comprised two gating sub‐components, Mb1 and Mb2, both of which showed significant gating suppression (>51%). The attention directed to the S2 tone changed the gating network topology by switching the prefrontal generator from a dorsolateral location, which was active in the passive condition (18/19), to a medial location, active in the attention condition (19/19). Enhanced responses to the attended stimulus caused a significant reduction in gating suppression in both STG gating components (>50%). Our results demonstrate that attention not only modulates sensory gating dynamics, but also exerts topological rerouting of information processing within the PFC. The present data, suggesting that the cortical levels of early sensory processing are subject to top‐down influences, change the current view of gating as a purely automatic bottom‐up process. Aims/Purpose: Fluorescence lifetime imaging ophthalmoscopy (FLIO) allows in vivo measurement of autofluorescence intensity decays of endogenous fluorophores in the ocular fundus. So far, only devices from Heidelberg Engineering based on the Spectralis system have been used in FLIO research. Here, we present and characterize a new FLIO device based on the RETImap system from Roland Consult. Methods: The device is based on a confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscope (35° field, 512 × 512 px). A ps diode laser (BDL‐SMN 473 nm, Becker & Hickl GmbH, Berlin, Germany) excites autofluorescence. The fluorescence photons are split into a short (498–560 nm, SSC) and a long (560–720 nm, LSC) spectral channel (one HPM‐100‐40 detector [Becker & Hickl GmbH] each) and are detected by time‐correlated single photon counting (SPC‐160, Becker & Hickl GmbH). We determined the maximum laser power (ILT2400, International Light Technologies, Inc. Peabody, MA, USA) and analysed the instrument's behaviour at three different laser power levels (150 μW, 200 μW and max.) in terms of laser spectrum (CAS140CT, Instrument Systems GmbH, Munich, Germany) and instrument response function (IRF). The IRF was determined using a 25 μM Eosin Y solution, mixed with a 5 M solution of potassium iodide, placed in a flat cuvette (110‐OS, Hellma GmbH & Co. KG, Müllheim, Germany) in front of the objective lens of the FLIO device. Fluorescence measurements of approximately 1‐min duration were performed three times for all three laser powers. The IRF and the full width at half maximum (FWHM) were calculated using FLIMX software (www.flimx.de). Results: The max. laser power was 280 μW. The peak wavelengths of the laser spectra were 467.6 (150 μW), 467.9 (200 μW) and 468.0 nm (280 μW). IRF FWHM in SSC were 298.6 ± 1.1 ps (150 μW), 341.0 ± 2.5 ps (200 μW) and 347.5 ± 6.0 ps (280 μW). In LSC, the IRF FWHM were 290.4 ± 3.8 ps (150 μW), 344.0 ± 3.4 ps (200 μW) and 358.8 ± 1.3 ps (280 μW). Results are mean ± standard deviation. Conclusions: A new fluorescence lifetime imaging ophthalmoscope has been characterized. The device offers a high laser power for fluorescence excitation, a large field of view, a high spatial resolution, and a sufficiently high time resolution. In this study the influence of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) on the redox state, NADH protein binding, and mitochondrial membrane potential in Müller cells is investigated. Cultures of permanent human Müller cells MIO-M1 were exposed to H2O2 in 75 µM and 150 µM concentration for two hours. Fluorescence emission spectra and lifetimes were measured by two-photon microscopy (excitation wavelength: 740 nm) at the mitochondria which were identified in the microscopic images by their fluorescence properties (spectra and intensity). Two hours of H2O2 exposure did not impair viability of MIO-M1 cells in culture. Whereas the ratio of flavine- to NADH fluorescence intensity did not change under either H2O2 concentration, the mean lifetime was significantly different between controls, not exposed to H2O2, and the 150 µM H2O2 exposure (972 ± 63 ps vs. 1152 ± 64 ps, p = 0.014). One hour after cessation of the H2O2 exposure, the value retuned to that of the control (983 ± 36 ps). A hyperpolarization of the mitochondrial membrane under 150 µM H2O2 was found. These findings suggest a shift form free to protein-bound NADH in mitochondria as well as a hyperpolarization of their inner membrane which could be related to an impairment of Müller cell function despite their preserved viability. Several plasma treatments using argon, oxygen, and nitrogen are studied in order to increase the interfacial adhesion of the polyurethane/Ag:TiN system to be used as biopotential electrodes. The optimized plasma treatments conditions (100 W, 15 min, regardless of the gas) promote a steep decrease of the water contact angle values. The observed chemical and topographic alterations translate into excellent polyurethane/Ag:TiN interfacial adhesion of the plasma treated samples. The in-service validation of the proposed Ag:TiN-coated PU multipin electrodes is performed by acquiring EEG signals in parallel with the standard wet Ag/AgCl electrodes. No considerable differences are found in terms of shape, amplitude, and spectral characteristics of the signals when comparing reference wet and dry electrodes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Extensive evidence supports the notion that physical activity (PA) promotes healthy aging and contributes to the prevention of brain damage and dementia. However, there are relevant differences in individual response to exercise that could mediate the extent of the PA‐induced benefits. Here, we propose the application of the novel technology that is currently being developed by the EMBRACE project researchers to the characterization of the individual physiological response to exercise in older adults. Method: EMBRACE is an intersectoral and international consortium that brings together experts in biomedical engineering, material science, signal processing, neuroscience and social psychology from 3 academic and 3 industrial partners across 3 EU countries to develop: 1) a new mobile and wireless dry electrode EEG system suitable for monitoring brain activity during full body movements; 2) novel body network sensors and a multimodal alignment system for simultaneously recording of neural, physiological and kinematic signals from two interacting subjects; 3) novel analytical solutions for motion artefact removal and multi‐level analysis of multimodal data; and 4) a new research dyadic paradigm to exploit the technological advances. Result: The novel technological solutions that are being currently developed by the EMBRACE consortium will enable the study of joint action at the neural, cognitive, behavioral and social levels while the participant engages in PA (individually or in social interaction), wearing a comfortable and long‐lasting acquisition system. Conclusion: A detailed characterization of the individual response to exercise will help in the optimization of exercise routines with the aim to elicit the desired physiological response to enhance brain health and prevent dementia. Purpose Through-plane susceptibility-induced signal loss in gradient recalled echo (GRE)-based sequences can considerably impair both the clinical diagnosis and functional analysis of certain brain areas. In this work, a fully automated simultaneous z-shim approach is proposed on the basis of parallel transmit (pTX) to reduce those signal dropouts at 3T. Theory and Methods The approach uses coil-specific time-delayed excitations to impose a z-shim phase. It was extended toward B1 inhomogeneity mitigation and adequate slice-specific signal-dephasing cancellation on the basis of the prevailing B0 and B1 spatial information. Local signal recovery level and image quality preservation were analyzed using multi-slice FLASH experiments in humans and compared to the standard excitation. Spatial blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) activation coverage was further compared in breath-hold functional MRI. Results The pTX z-shim approach recovered approximately 47% of brain areas affected by signal loss in standard excitation images across all subjects. At the same time, B1 shading effects could be substantially reduced. In these areas, BOLD activation coverage could be also increased by approximately 57%. Conclusion The proposed fully automated pTX z-shim method enables time-efficient and robust signal recovery in GRE-based sequences on a clinical scanner using two standard whole-body transmit coils. Purpose A target-pattern-driven (TD) trajectory design is introduced in combination with parallel transmit (pTX) radiofrequency (RF) pulses to provide localized suppression of unwanted signals. The design incorporates target-pattern and B1+ information to adjust denser sampling and coverage in k-space regions where the main pattern information lies. Based on this approach, two-dimensional RF spiral saturation pulses sensitive to RF power limits were applied in vivo for the first time. Theory and Methods The TD method was compared with two state-of-the-art spiral design methods. Simulations at different spatial fidelities, acceleration factors and anatomical regions were carried out for an eight-channel pTX 3 Tesla (T) coil. Human in vivo experiments were performed on a two-channel pTX 3T scanner saturating shaped patterns in the brain, heart, and thoracic spine. Results Using the TD trajectory, RF pulse power can be substantially reduced by up to 34% compared with other trajectory designs with the same spatial accuracy. Local and global specific absorption rates are decreased in most cases. Conclusion The TD trajectory design uses available a priori information to enhance RF power efficiency and spatial response of the RF pulses. Shaped saturation pulses show improved spatial accuracy and saturation performance. Thus, RF pulses can be designed more efficiently and can be further accelerated. Purpose To improve B1 and B0 inhomogeneity mitigation performance of spatially selective radio-frequency (RF) pulses in parallel transmission while decreasing RF pulse power. Further enhancement of off-resonance correction for rectilinear spoke-trajectory-based RF pulses with known residual geometric distortions after optimization. Methods The appropriate definition of the target magnetization pattern is discussed regarding the maximum physical excitation resolution. Furthermore, a novel variable-density trajectory design is introduced, which subsamples accrued B0 phase error elevations in k-space. A simulation study (echo-planar and spiral 2DRF) at different off-resonance levels and pulse acceleration factors was pursued using data from a whole-body 2-channel parallel transmit 3T MRI system. The new trajectory design for echo-planar 2DRF was validated in human in-vivo experiments. Results Proper target pattern definition can require spatial filtering, such that RF pulse optimization is prevented from lower excitation performance with significant higher RF power level. The new trajectory design proposed can considerably improve off-resonance compensation, while further reducing the RF power, e.g., 43% less RMSE with 79% less RF power for spoke based pulses. Conclusion The proposed methods offer significant improvements of the excitation performance (homogeneity and acceleration), while significantly decreasing the RF power. Objective The potentially life threatening long QT syndrome should be diagnosed during pregnancy to improve perinatal care. Methods A patient with a family history for a hereditary long QT syndrome presented at 30 weeks of her first pregnancy with fetal bradycardia and a narrow oscillation bandwidth on cardiotocography without structural abnormalities of the fetal heart. Fetal magnetocardiography was performed with a prototype biomagnetometer/gradiometer device in a magnetically unshielded environment. The cardiac time intervals were determined in the averaged PQRST complex. Results The QT time and the frequency-corrected QTc showed a marked prolongation to 380 ms and 0.52 s, respectively. The findings were confirmed in the postnatal electrocardiogram after spontaneous term delivery in a perinatal center. The causative mutation on chromosome 11 had been passed on to the newborn from his mother. Conclusion Bedside fetal magnetocardiography revealed the exact diagnosis of the long QT syndrome in a period of the gestation when the fetus was electrically isolated by the vernix caseosa that hinders electrocardiography. To patients at risk of fetal cardiac abnormalities, magnetocardiography can be offered as a non-invasive diagnostic bedside procedure. Neither music nor spoken language form uniform auditory streams, rather, they are structured into phrases. For the perception of such structures, the detection of phrase boundaries is crucial. We discovered electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) correlates for the perception of phrase boundaries in music. In EEG, this process was marked by a positive wave approximately between 500 and 600 ms after the offset of a phrase boundary with a centroparietal maximum. In MEG, we found major activity in an even broader time window (400-700 ms). Source localization revealed that likely candidates for the generation of the observed effects are structures in the limbic system, including anterior and posterior cingulate as well as posterior mediotemporal cortex. The timing and topography of the EEG effect bear some resemblance to a positive shift (closure positive shift, CPS) found for prosodic phrase boundaries during speech perception in an earlier study, suggesting that the underlying processes might be related. Because the brain structures, which possibly underlie the observed effects, are known to be involved in memory and attention processes, we suggest that the CPS may not reflect the detection of the phrase boundary as such, but those memory and attention related processes that are necessary to guide the attention focus from one phrase to the next, thereby closing the former and opening up the next phrase. Currently, FMCG is the only noninvasive procedure available, comparable to postnatal ECG, which can be used to assess cardiac electrophysiology during the second and third trimester of pregnancy. For a reliable evaluation and full clinical acceptance of this new technique, large numbers of patient investigations are required which can only be obtained in multicenter studies. An international standard protocol is needed to allow pooling of sufficient data and to permit the comparison of studies performed in different centers. Impaired myocardial performance is known to be associated with electrical and mechanical beat-to-beat alternans phenomena. The alternans in blood pressure and heart rate and their interdependency in idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (IDC) were studied. The arterial blood pressure and the electrocardiograph (ECG) were continuously recorded in 22 patients suffering from IDC (age 49 ± 13 years, ejection fraction 0.33 ± 0.13. left ventricular diameter of 67 ± B mm) and in 21 healthy controls (age 52 ± 15 years). The beat-to-beat variations of the interbeat intervals (IBI) and of the blood pressure amplitudes (AMP) were measured. An alternans beat was defined as a beat preceded and followed by beats that bad higher or lower values in the respective modality. The percentages of singular and repetitive alternans patterns, and the interdependency of the alternans patterns in AMP and IBI were assessed. The study found significantly more singular and repetitive alternans patterns in the IDC group compared to the control group both in the analysis of AMP and IBI (singular alternans in IRI: 55 ± 11 vs 47 ± 7%, P < 0.01: singular alternans in AMP: 61 ± 15 vs 45 ± 6%. P < 0.01: triple alternans in IBI: 29 ± 18 vs 16 ± 9%. P < 0.01: triple alternans in AMP: 34 ± 24vs 12 ± 7%, P < 0,01), The amplitudes of the AMP alternans patterns were higher in IDC compared to controls (9 ± 7 vs 4 ± 2% of AMP, P = 0.01) whereas they did not differ in IBI. The correlation analysis revealed a significant interdependency of the alternans pattern in IBI and AMP in 18 of 22 IDC patients and in 12 of 21 controls (r = 0.50 ± 0.21 (IDC): r = 0.26 ± 0.05 [controls]). The slope of the linear regression (ΔAMP vs ΔIBI) was steeper in the IDC group compared to the control group (62 ± 50 vs 20 ± 22 mmHg/s. P < 0.01). The percentages of alternans patterns appearing in IBI and AMP were positively correlated to the left ventricular diameter (r = 0.70 in the IBI, and r = 0.30 in the AMP). The blood pressure amplitude and the heat rate did not differ between the two groups. Patients suffering from IDC have a higher prevalence, stability, amplitude, and interdependency of alternans patterns in IBI and AMP compared to the control group. In magnetocardiography, averaging of QRS complexes is often used to improve the signal-to-noise ratio. However, averaging of QRS complexes ignores the variation in amplitude and shape of the signals caused, for example, by respiration. This may lead to suppression of signal portions within the QRS complexes. Furthermore, for inverse source, reconstructions of dipoles and of current density distributions errors in the special arrangement may occur. To overcome these problems we developed a method for separating and selective averaging QRS complexes with different shapes and amplitudes. The method is based on a spline interpolation of the QHS complex averaged by a standard procedure. This spline function then is fitted to each QRS complex in the raw data by means of nonlinear regression (Levenberg-Marquardt method). Five regression parameters are applied: a linear amplitude scaling, two parameters describing the baseline drift, a time scaling parameter, and a time shift parameter. We found that both amplitude and shape of the QRS complex are influenced by respiration. The baseline shows a weaker influence of the respiration. The regression parameters of two neighboring measurement channels correlate linearly. Thus, selective averaging of a larger number of sensors can be performed simultaneously. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
