Rear‐edge tree populations are experiencing a combination of higher temperatures and more intense droughts that might push individuals beyond their tolerance limits. This trend towards rising atmospheric [CO2] is concurrent with an increase in intrinsic water use efficiency (iWUE), which theoretically enhances photosynthesis and decrease evapotranspiration rates, consequently improving tree resistance to drought. However, it remains unclear whether iWUE is favouring tree growth under current climate conditions, particularly when climate and iWUE legacy effects are simultaneously considered.We evaluated this question with an extensive sampling along Iberian rear‐edge (dry) populations comprising four mountain ranges and two distinct altitudes. We simultaneously examined the effects of climate and iWUE on secondary growth using annually resolved basal area increments (BAIs) for the period 1901–2017. We used linear mixed models including second‐order autocorrelation and 1‐year legacy effects of iWUE and summer drought.BAI and iWUE increased across the studied period. iWUE increase was driven by changes in atmospheric CO2 concentration and water availability during the growing season. Climate and iWUE exerted direct and lagged effects on beech growth. Water availability during growing season was the main driver of tree growth, combining direct and indirect effects through its impact on iWUE. Legacy effects of water availability and iWUE were more important than growing season conditions. The net effect of iWUE shifted when lagged effects were considered, resulting in a net negative impact on tree growth.Synthesis: Our results reveal that climate and iWUE legacy effects must be considered to assess the net iWUE effect on secondary growth. Considering lagged effects, the current increase in iWUE is constraining tree growth. This article discusses the challenges in diagnosing posterior placenta accreta, a severe complication during pregnancy. While ultrasound is commonly used to detect placenta accreta, its accuracy is lower for posterior cases compared to anterior cases. This is because the risk factors associated with anterior placental invasion, such as previous Caesarean sections, may not be as relevant for posterior cases. Aim To determine the CO2 permeability ( PCO2) of plasma membranes of cardiomyocytes. These cells were chosen because heart possesses the highest rate of O2 consumption/ CO2 production in the body. Methods Cardiomyocytes were isolated from rat hearts using the Langendorff technique. Cardiomyocyte suspensions exhibited a vitality of 2-14% and were studied by the previously described mass spectrometric 18O-exchange technique deriving PCO2. We showed by mass spectrometry and by carbonic anhydrase ( CA) staining that non-vital cardiomyocytes are free of CA and thus do not contribute to the mass spectrometric signal, which is determined exclusively by the fully functional vital cardiomyocytes. Results Lysed cardiomyocytes yielded an intracellular CA activity for vital cells of 5070; that is, the rate of CO2 hydration inside the cell is accelerated 5071-fold. Using this number, analyses of the mass spectrometric recordings from cardiomyocyte suspensions yield a PCO2 of 0.10 cm s−1 ( SD ± 0.06, n = 15) at 37 °C. Conclusion In comparison with the PCO2 of other cells, this value is quite high and about identical to that of the human red cell membrane. As no major protein CO2 channels such as aquaporins 1 and 4 are present in rat cardiac sarcolemma, the high PCO2 of this membrane is likely due to its low cholesterol content of about 0.2 (mol cholesterol)·(mol total membrane lipids)−1. Previous work predicted a PCO2 of ≥0.1 cm s−1 from this level of cholesterol. We conclude that the low cholesterol establishes a PCO2 high enough to render the membrane resistance to CO2 diffusion almost negligible, even under conditions of maximal O2 consumption of the heart. With the aim of studying delta-like protein 1 (DLK1) with respect to the relationship between adipocyte leptin and adenohypophyseal hormones, we carried out an immunohistochemical study analysing the presence of receptors for these hormones in the pituitary and adipose cells of male wild-type (WT) mice (Dlk1+/+) compared to knockout (KO) mice (Dlk1−/−). The mRNA expression of these molecules was also determined using the reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. The results obtained showed that, in WT adipose cells, all of the adenohypophyseal hormone receptors were present, with a higher mRNA expression for growth hormone (GH) receptor and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) receptor. Of the total cells in the anterior pituitary lobe, 17.09±0.9% were leptin receptor (LEPR) immunoreactive (-IR), mainly in GH-IR and prolactin (PRL)-IR cells (41.5±3.8%; 13.5±1.7%, respectively). In Dlk1−/− mice, adipocyte cells showed a significant increase in the TSH receptor mRNA expression level. Moreover, the percentage of LEPR-IR GH cells showed a statistically significant increase compared to controls, from 41.5±3.8% to 53.1±4.0%. By contrast, only 3.0±0.6% of LEP-IR anterior pituitary cells were detected in Dlk1 KO mice, as opposed to 6.8±1.1% observed in WT mice. The results suggest that relationships exist between adipocytes and pituitary GH, PRL and TSH cells, in addition to an influence with respect to the synthesis and release of pituitary leptin, particularly in PRL cells. Contents The aims of this study were to (i) identify different morphometric subpopulations in cooled-stored canine sperm and their patterns of distribution during cool-storage for up to 240 hr and (ii) determine whether or not morphometric sperm subpopulations ( sP) are related to sperm DNA integrity. For that purpose, morphometric parameters were analysed by computer-assisted sperm analysis ( CASA) and sperm DNA fragmentation ( sDFi) using the sperm Halomax test. Four morphometric sperm heads subpopulations were identified: sP1 (large and rounded), sP2 (large and elongated), sP3 (small and rounded) and sP4 (small and elongated). sP1 was the most predominant subpopulation for up to 72 hr and thereafter sP3 increased progressively. sDFi increased after 48 hr of cool-storage. Although sP3 showed a positive correlation with sDFi, and both increased over time, it could not be ensured that only the sperm with fragmented DNA are accumulated in sP3. In conclusion, sP3 and DNA fragmentation increased progressively during cool-storage, becoming possible indicators of sperm damage. Contents Chromosomal abnormalities are one of the main causes of genetic infertility in horses. Currently, their detection rate is rising due to the use of new diagnostic tools employing molecular markers linked to the sex chromosome pair. Despite genetic similarities, there are no previous reports of sterility associated with chromosomal abnormalities in the domestic donkey ( Equus asinus). Hereby, we determined the presence of a chromosomal mosaicism in a female donkey with reproductive problems using molecular methodologies developed for horses. A two-and-a-half-year-old jenny characterized by morphological abnormalities of the reproductive tract was cytogenetically analysed using conventional and fluorescent techniques and a group of microsatellite markers (short tandem repeat, STR). At the same time, five ultrasound measures of the reproductive tract were taken and compared with eight contemporary jennies of the same breed. After slaughter, morphological examinations showed that the case study had a blind vaginal vestibule defining an empty pouch that covered the entrance of the cervical os. Histopathological studies demonstrated that this abnormal structure was compatible with a remnant hymen. Molecular markers, STR and fluorescent in situ hybridization determinations revealed that the animal was a 62, XX/61,X mosaic and, therefore, the first case of chromosomal abnormalities in the sex pair reported in donkeys. Hydroclimatic variability is one of the main factors that drives inter-annual changes in fish migration patterns. This study analyses the relationship between climate-oceanographic factors and migration of the Atlantic pomfret ( Brama brama) in NE Atlantic waters. Geo-referenced catch data from logbooks of longliners operating in European Atlantic waters from 2002 to 2013 were linked to environmental indices at different temporal and spatial scales. Our results point to a strong influence of temperature at 200 m depth as the key factor along with the upwelling in the Galician ( NW Iberian) waters. However, sea surface temperature ( SST) indirectly affects the geographical display of Atlantic pomfret migration, and large migrations are observed in scenarios of high SSTs in the migratory area ( c. above 14.7°C). Migrations are constrained during years when temperatures are below this threshold. A longer time-series of annual landings (1950-2013) supports this evidence and highlights the significant influence of temperature at 200-m depth along with the landings of the previous year. Length frequency distributions suggest an increase in size between consecutive seasons supporting the hypothesis that migration is a feeding strategy and a return to tropical waters of origin for spawning. Our study shows that the temperature of intermediate waters is a key variable in determining the northward migration of the Atlantic pomfret whereas density-dependence and surface climatic conditions trigger secondary effects on the migration pattern of this species. Abstract: Vitrification of sperm is based on high‐speed freezing by direct exposure to liquid nitrogen using non‐permeable cryoprotectants, mainly disaccharides; yet, the concentration of cryoprotectants has a species‐specific effect on the sperm cell. The aim of this study was to assess different sucrose concentrations for stallion sperm vitrification. Semen samples (n = 9) were collected from three stallions, centrifuged and resuspended to a concentration of 50 × 106 sperm/ml in a base extender (INRA96 + 1% of bovine serum albumin) with three different sucrose concentrations (Molar): 20 mM (S1), 100 mM (S2), or 200 mM (S3). Then, sperm were filled in covered 0.25 ml straws and directly plunged into liquid nitrogen. For warming, 0.25 ml straw was pulled out the covering straw and immersed in 3 ml of INRA96 at 43°C, with gentle pipetting to accelerate the melting. Total (TM, %) and progressive sperm motility (PM, %) were analysed using computer‐assisted sperm analysis. Plasma (PMI, %) and acrosome membrane integrity (AIS, %) were assessed under epifluorescence microscopy. Post‐warmed sperm parameters were compared between treatments by ANOVA. S2 showed significantly higher values in comparison with S1 and S3 for TM (S2 = 54.7 ± 5.5a; S1 = 29.1 ± 3.3b; S3 = 28.6 ± 3.0b; p < 0.001) and PM (S2 = 31.3 ± 3.8a; S1 = 18.5 ± 2.6b; S3 = 17.7 ± 2.9b; p < 0.01), respectively. No significant differences were found among treatments for PMI (S2 = 70.3 ± 5.2; S1 = 67.4 ± 4.3; S3 = 70.0 ± 3.7) neither for AIS (S2 = 57.1 ± 3.9; S1 = 53.9 ± 4.2; S3 = 57.0 ± 7.9). Contents: Sperm vitrification as alternative to conventional freezing is increasing in popularity in many species. It has been achieved by direct exposure of diluted semen to liquid nitrogen in spheres or straws. Both techniques have been successfully developed, but they had not been compared yet in donkeys. The aim of this study was to compare these two methods of vitrification for donkey semen. Ejaculates from six Andalusian donkeys were collected and extended in Gent without glycerol supplemented with sucrose 0.1 M (Molar). Samples were slowly cooled at 5°C. For vitrification, 30 μl suspensions (spheres) were dropped directly into liquid nitrogen (LN2) or filled in covered 0.25 ml straws and then plunged into the LN2 (straws). For warming, straws and spheres were directly immersed in 3 ml of INRA‐96 at 43°C. Total (TM, %) and progressive motility (PM, %) were objectively evaluated by computer‐assisted sperm analysis and plasma membrane integrity (PMI, %) by epifluorescence microscopy. Results showed the straw method resulted in significantly higher values than spheres for: TM (54.7% ± 10.1 vs. 28.6% ± 6.5) and PM (44.2% ± 9.4 vs. 17.7% ± 6.4), but no significant differences were found between straws or spheres for PMI (31.5 ± 10.7 vs. 41.6 ± 14.3) respectively. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of sperm selection by single layer centrifugation (SLC) on canine sperm quality when SLC was performed before or after the cooling process, or when double SLC (before and after cooling) was performed. Twenty ejaculates from four dogs were divided into four aliquots as follows: unselected: no SLC was performed; SLC prior to cooling (SLC-PC): sperm selection was carried out before cooling; SLC after cooling (SLC-AC): sperm selection was performed after cooling; and double SLC: sperm selection was carried out before and after cooling. Sperm motility (by computer-assisted semen analysis), morphology (Diff-Quick staining), sperm membrane integrity (Vital-Test kit) and acrosome integrity (double fluorescent stain) were assessed in re-warmed semen samples. Four sperm subpopulations (sP) were detected using a pattern analysis technique (sP1: highly active, non-progressive; sP2: low velocity, highly progressive; sP3: less vigorous, poorly progressive; sP4: highly progressive motility). A higher proportion of sperm were classified as sP4 in SLC-AC samples. Most of the sperm parameters assessed showed higher values in the SLC-AC group. This study investigated the somatic growth and energy allocation strategy of two sympatric hake species ( Merluccius polli and Merluccius senegalensis), coexisting under the strong influence of the Mauritanian upwelling. The results revealed that ontogeny, bathymetry, geography and reproduction shaped the differences found between the condition dynamics of the two species. Aside from species-specific differences, individuals were observed in better condition in the northernmost area (more influenced by the permanent upwelling) and in the deepest waters, probably the most favourable habitat for Merluccius spp. Both species also displayed contrasting trade-offs in energy allocation probably due to the dissimilarity of their habitats, which favours the existence of divergent adaptive strategies in response to different ontogenic requirements. It was hypothesized that M. polli invests in mass and energy reserves while sacrificing growth, as larger sizes may not provide an ecological advantage in a deeper and more stable environment. Moreover, M. senegalensis capitalizes on a steady growth without major disruptions, enabling earlier spawning at the expense of a lower somatic mass, which is fitting to a less stable shallower environment. This study sheds new light on differences in the biological traits and life strategies of Merluccius spp., which permit their overlap in a complex upwelling system and may contribute to the long-lasting scientific-based management of these species. Contents Aseptic vitrification of semen samples packed in straws has been successfully developed in human but not in donkeys. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of two extenders for donkey sperm vitrification using straws. Ejaculates from four Andalusian donkeys were collected, and samples were extended in INRA-96 (I) or Gent (G) supplemented with sucrose 0.25 M and 1% bovine serum albumin ( BSA). Extended samples were cooled for one hour at 5°C. For vitrification, samples were filled in covered 0.25 ml straws and then plunged directly into liquid nitrogen. For warming, straws were immersed in INRA-96 at 43°C. Results showed no significant differences between I and G treatments for TM (34.2% ± 8.7 vs. 30.7% ± 9.6) and PM (26.8% ± 7.3 vs. 24.6% ± 7.9), respectively. The aim of this work was to assess the combined effect of sperm centrifugation, semen extender and storage time before freezing on post-thaw sperm quality and freezability on chilled stored canine semen in a Neopor box. Sperm parameters evaluated were total and progressive sperm motility by Computer-Assisted Sperm Analysis (CASA) and sperm viability and acrosome integrity using a triple fluorescent stain. Sperm quality and freezability indexes were also studied. First, the effect of centrifugation and two commercial extenders from Minitübe (Biladyl A and CaniPRO Freeze A) was evaluated in chilled semen after 24 and 45 hours of cold storage. No significant differences were observed between treatments in almost all the sperm parameters assessed. Secondly, chilled semen was frozen after 24 and 45 hours of cold storage in a Neopor box. The best results were obtained when semen was centrifuged, chilled with CaniPRO Freeze A and then frozen after 24 hours of cold storage, showing no differences in both post-thaw sperm quality and freezability in comparison with semen immediately frozen after collection. In conclusion, dog semen centrifuged after collection and extended with CaniPRO Freeze can be frozen after 24 hours of cold storage in a Neopor box, obtaining similar results to semen immediately frozen after collection. The aim of this minireview was to identify and review the scientific evidence regarding regenerative endodontic protocols claiming to revascularize permanent immature teeth with apical periodontitis. The literature was identified using the PubMed/ MEDLINE, Scopus, Scirus, EMBASE and Cochrane databases up to February 2013. Studies were selected independently by two different researchers ( kappa index: 0.88), based on established inclusion/exclusion criteria. The methodological quality of the reviewed papers was classified as high, medium or low ( HQ, MQ, LQ). The search strategy identified 285 titles. Nine studies, both human and animal based, were selected after application of the criteria ( LQ:5; MQ:4). In most of these studies (seven of nine), the revascularization protocol included a triple antibiotic combination as canal disinfectant for a period of 1-4 weeks after blood clot formation ( LQ:5; MQ:4), although there is no clear consensus about the treatment protocol. Two studies reported tooth discoloration after the revascularization process ( LQ:2), and only three ( LQ:1; MQ:2) reported a success rate of 54.9% in dogs and 73.6% and 80% in humans, respectively. Revascularization of immature permanent teeth with apical periodontitis is possible and preferable to apexification. Nevertheless, there is a widespread lack of randomized clinical trials and blinded measures. In addition, the small sample sizes that are common in these studies as well as the generally low quality of the analysed publications require the results to be viewed with caution. There is a high risk of bias, with a low quality of available information, for developing clinical guidelines for regenerative endodontic protocols; rigorous randomized clinical trials are therefore needed. Background and Purpose: Increasing evidence demonstrates that melatonin regulates inflammatory and immune processes acting as both an activator and inhibitor of these responses. Nevertheless, the molecular mechanisms of its anti-inflammatory action remain unclear. Here we have characterized the cellular mechanisms underlying the redox modulation of LPS-stimulated inflammatory responses in murine peritoneal macrophages by melatonin to provide insight into its anti-inflammatory effects.Experimental Approach: Murine peritoneal macrophages were isolated and treated with melatonin in the presence or absence of LPS (5 μg·mL(-1) ) for 18 h. Cell viability was determined using sulforhodamine B assay and NO production was measured using the Griess reaction. Pro-inflammatory enzymes and transcription factors were detected by Western blotting.Key Results: Without affecting cell viability, melatonin (12.5, 25, 50 and 100 μM) reduced the level of nitrites, inducible NOS (iNOS), COX-2 and microsomal PGE synthase-1 (mPGES1) protein, and p38 MAPK phosphorylation, and prevented NF-κB translocation. Furthermore, melatonin treatment significantly increased NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and haem oxygenase 1 (HO1) protein levels in murine macrophages exposed to LPS.Conclusions and Implications: Melatonin reduced pro-inflammatory mediators and enhanced the expression of HO1 via NF-κB, p38 MAPK and Nrf2 cascade signalling pathways in murine macrophages. Volunteer work is beneficial for not only recipients and organizations but also volunteers. Several studies have shown the positive effects on health, psychological well-being, and even on the longevity of those who take part in some kind of voluntary work. These benefits are even greater in older adults. Our research seeks to further analyse these benefits. We have studied the differences between a group of mature volunteers and another equivalent group who do not carry out any voluntary work. A total of 176 people older than 50 years of age (88 volunteers and 88 nonvolunteers) were interviewed. The results show significant differences in all the variables analysed. Meanwhile, the regression analysis indicates that self-esteem, self-efficacy, and social support are the variables with greater predictive weight in the level of participation. Ethanol oxidative dehydrogenation over Pt/TiO2 photocatalyst, in the presence and absence of blue phosphors, was performed. The catalyst was prepared by photodeposition of Pt on sulphated TiO2. This material was tested in a gas-solid photocatalytic fluidized bed reactor at high illumination efficiency. The effect of the addition of blue phosphors into the fluidized bed has been evaluated. The synthesized catalysts were extensively characterized by different techniques. Pt/TiO2 with a loading of 0.5 wt% of Pt appeared to be an active photocatalyst in the selective partial oxidation of ethanol to acetaldehyde improving its activity and selectivity compared to pure TiO2. In the same way, a notable enhancement of ethanol conversion in the presence of the blue phosphors has been obtained. The blue phosphors produced an increase in the level of ethanol conversion over the Pt/TiO2 catalyst, keeping at the same time the high selectivity to acetaldehyde. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary The present work examines the temporal appearance and degree of activity of digestive enzymes of pancreatic and intestinal origin (amylase as well as neutral and alkaline proteases) together with the evolution of the ontogenic development of the intestine and pancreas during the first month of free-living (30 days post-hatch-[dph]) of the sturgeon Acipenser naccarii. In addition, the influence of exogenous live feeding with Artemia salina on the detection of digestive enzymes was studied. Shown are that in the first life stages of the A. naccarii, from the time of fertilisation to the juvenile stage, the following events related to its digestive physiology occurred: digestive enzymes were detected in the embryo stage within the egg, presumably related to the hatching gland; in the free-living embryo stage, opening of the mouth was at 10 dpf and protease and amylase digestive activities occurred due to an early differentiation of the pancreas and intestine (12-13 dpf). At this stage, digestive enzymatic activities are partly owing to the live feed offered before disappearance of the yolk reserves (14 dpf); the expulsion of the melanin plug and the appearance of a continuity of the digestion tract (16 dpf) together with the disappearance of the yolk reserves (17 dpf) mark the passage from the free-living embryo phase to the juvenile stage; finally, from the first month after hatching in this sturgeon species, there is a stabilisation in digestive amylase and protease activities together with a fully developed digestive structure. The contribution of enzymes from prey in the detection of enzymatic activities determined in the fish was beyond doubt; therefore these exogenous enzymes must also have a certain physiological importance. Subsequent work will be needed to clarify the importance of digestive processes of the exogenous enzyme pool from live feed as well as to assess the possibility of shortening the weaning period. To better understand the role of the non-canonical Notch ligand delta-like protein 1 (DLK1), in hormone-producing cells, we studied the cell distribution and subcellular localisation of DLK1 in the pituitary of male adult 129/SvJ mice, and analysed the variations in the hormone-producing cells associated with the lack of this gene in Dlk1 knockout mice. The results obtained showed the presence of DLK1-immunoreactive (ir) cells in all hormone-producing cells of the anterior pituitary. Immunoelectron microscopy showed DLK1-ir in the rough endoplasmic reticulum and inside secretory vesicles, suggesting that DLK1 is released together with pituitary hormones. Moreover, we found that prolactin (PRL)-DLK1-ir cells are in intimate contact with follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)-ir-DLK1-negative cells. In Dlk1 knockout mice, we detected a significantly lower number of gowth hormone (GH)-ir cells, a reduction in the FSH and PRL immunostaining intensity, and a significant decrease in FSH mRNA expression compared to wild-type mice. An increase in pituitary GH mRNA expression and serum leptin levels was also found. These findings provide evidence supporting several regulatory functions of DLK1 in the pituitary gland. This work analyses the changes in the redox balance in two fish species: Adriatic sturgeon ( Acipenser naccarii) and rainbow trout ( Oncorhynchus mykiss) during starvation and refeeding period. The starvation period raised the lipid peroxidation (thiobarbituric-acid-reacting substances) levels in liver and blood, while a decline occurred in the antioxidant enzymatic activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPX) and glutathione reductase (GR) in both fish species. In liver, after the refeeding period, SOD activity recovered in both species, whereas CAT activity recovered only in trout. Furthermore, in both tissues of the two species, the lipid peroxidation levels remained high after 2 months of refeeding. In white muscle and heart, the lipid peroxidation levels indicate that these tissues did not undergo oxidative stress during the 72-day period. During starvation, in the muscle of both fish the fall in the lipid peroxidation level coincided with a rise in CAT, GPX and GR. The refeeding period in this tissue raised the lipid peroxidation level, and the enzymatic activities reached the values of the first point of starvation. In heart, no oxidative damage was detected during starvation in either species. The CAT and SOD activities increased during the starvation period only in trout. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Identifying the factors affecting the retention of volunteers in their activities is one of the main objectives for researchers and volunteer managers. There have been many studies with this aim and many factors affecting sustained volunteerism have been identified. However, one of the limits of these models is the low percentage of explained variance, which indicates that there are other additional factors, yet unidentified, which may have an important influence in the prediction of durability as a volunteer. In our study, we intend to analyze the effect that some factors of organizational socialization of volunteers have on their intention to remain volunteers. In particular, we will focus on the level of integration in the organization, evaluated from five variables: social networks, training, understanding, social support inside the organization, and characteristics of the job they perform. The statistical analysis shows that social networks, organizational support, positive task, and formation are highly significant predictors of the intention to remain a volunteer. These four variables explain 29% of the variability of the dependent variable, while the variables understanding and social support of the volunteers were excluded from the regression equation. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. It is estimated that the development of a new anticancer agent costs US$800 million to 1 billion and takes more than a decade between conception and approval. However, 90% of novel antineoplastic drugs fail in the clinic despite evidence of antitumor efficacy in classical preclinical models. This raises serious concerns as to whether such models are predictive of drug efficacy in humans, particularly in the current era of new targeted therapies, and supports the development of alternative approaches. The purpose of this study was to evaluate associations between germline epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) variants involved in transcriptional regulation and overall survival in white patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treated with the EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor, gefitinib. Of 175 consecutive patients treated with oral gefitinib (250 mg/day), 170 (median age: 67 years; 72% men) were evaluable for genotyping and survival. Fifty-five patients (33%) had stable disease and 17 (10%) had an objective response. The most common of four haplotypes was G-C (EGFR*1) at the EGFR −216G>T and −191C>A loci (frequency, 0.45). After adjusting for performance status, previous platinum-containing chemotherapy and occurrence of skin rash or diarrhea during the first treatment cycle in patients with performance status 0 or 1 (N=139), the absence of EGFR*1 was associated with significantly better survival (hazard ratio: 0.54; 95% confidence interval: 0.32–0.91; P=0.015). Two feeding trials were carried out to evaluate the efficiency of probiotics and maslinic acid, on growth and survival of juvenile dentex; liver proteolytic activities were also investigated in the second trial. For experiment 1, triplicate groups were fed six diets with two probiotics ( Bacillus toyoi, T, and B. cereus, E) at increasing levels (0.5, 1 and 2 g kg−1 diet) and a control diet. Growth and feed conversion were not significantly influenced by the probiotics. The diet T1 produced the lower mortality, whereas diet E1 rendered the higher mortality. It was concluded that no significant effects on growth and survival were found following the addition of two kinds of probiotics to dentex diets. However, the diet E0.5 showed a tendency to ameliorate the growth and feed utilization of the diet. In a second trial, triplicate groups were fed four diets with increasing levels of maslinic acid (0, 20, 40 and 80 mg kg−1 diet). Growth of fish given diets with the highest level of maslinic acid (D80) was slightly but not significantly lower than those from the other groups. Furthemore, mortality of fish fed diet D40 was the lowest. Changes in liver proteasome and endoprotease activities measured on sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS)/gelatin gels were also detected in a dose-dependent manner. Summary In a double blind, placebo-controlled trial, we have assessed the effects of pre-operative anxiolysis on postoperative pain scores in 112 ASA I-II women, aged 18–65 years, scheduled to undergo total abdominal hysterectomy. Subjects were randomly allocated to receive either oral diazepam 10 mg (n =56) or placebo ( n =56) pre-operatively. Postoperative anxiety, pain scores, analgesic consumption, and sedation were evaluated at several time points during the first 24 h following surgery. Postoperative pain scores were found to be significantly higher in the diazepam group. Trait and state anxiety showed a significant effect on pain scores, independent of the treatment group. No difference was found between the groups in morphine consumption, but there was a significant reduction in morphine consumption with time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
