This paper focuses on the problem of adaptive integral sliding mode control (ISMC) with dissipativity for a type of complex non‐linear system represented by Takagi‐Sugeno (T‐S) fuzzy descriptor models. First, T‐S fuzzy descriptor systems with different derivative matrices are transformed into augmented systems that have the same properties as the original systems, and an integral sliding mode surface function is designed considering the descriptor matrices. Then, based on the dissipativity theory and the non‐parallel distributed compensation (non‐PDC) method, ISMC strategies and dissipativity‐based ISMC strategies are proposed, and the system uncertainties and external disturbances with unknown upper bounds are addressed with an adaptive controller. According to the Lyapunov theory and the dissipativity theory, a fuzzy Lyapunov function is designed, and the obtained criteria are presented in the form of strict linear matrix inequalities (LMIs); this approach guarantees that the closed‐loop system is asymptotically stable and strictly (Q,R,S)−α$(\mathcal{Q},\mathcal{R},\mathcal{S}) - {{\alpha}}$ dissipative. Moreover, the controller gain matrices and Lyapunov matrices are decoupled by introducing the corresponding auxiliary variables and employing Finsler's lemma. Li‐ion batteries (LIBs) can reduce carbon emissions by powering electric vehicles (EVs) and promoting renewable energy development with grid‐scale energy storage. However, LIB production and electricity generation still heavily rely on fossil fuels at present, resulting in major environmental concerns. Are LIBs as environmentally friendly and sustainable as expected at the current stage? In the past 5 years, a skyrocketing growth of the EV market has been witnessed. LIBs have garnered huge attention from academia, industry, government, non‐governmental organizations, investors, and the general public. Tremendous volumes of LIBs are already implemented in EVs today, with a continuing, exponential growth expected for the years to come. When LIBs reach their end‐of‐life in the next decades, what technologies can be in place to enable second‐life or recycling of batteries? Herein, life cycle assessment studies are examined to evaluate the environmental impact of LIBs, and EVs are compared with internal combustion engine vehicles regarding environmental sustainability. To provide a holistic view of the LIB development, this Perspective provides insights into materials development, manufacturing, recycling, legislation and policy, and beyond. Graphene and graphene oxide (GO), as wonder materials, have penetrated nearly every field of research. One of their most attractive features is the functionality and assembly of graphene or GO, in which they can be considered to be chemically functionalized building blocks for creating unconventional porous graphene materials (PGMs) that not only combine the merits of both porous materials and graphene, but also have major advantages over other porous carbons for specific applications. The chemistry and approaches for functionalizing graphene and GO are first introduced, and typical procedures for pore creation (e.g., in‐plane pores, 2D laminar pores, and 3D interconnected pore assemblies), self‐assembly, and tailoring mechanisms for PGMs to highlight the significance of precise control over the pore morphology and pore size are summarized. Because of their unique pore structures, with different morphologies and intriguing properties, PGMs serve as key components in a variety of applications such as energy storage, electrocatalysis, and molecular separation. Finally, the challenges relating to PGMs from the understanding of chemical self‐assembly to specific applications are discussed, and promising solutions on how to tackle them are presented. This provides an insightful outlook for the future development of the chemistry and applications of PGMs.Recent advances in the chemistry of graphene and porous graphene materials, including surface chemistry, interface chemistry, assembly chemistry, and functionalization chemistry, and their potential applications are reviewed. Sugar production is essential for the production of foods, biochemicals, and biofuels via biochemical or catalytic routes. Sugar‐containing crops, and starch‐based and cellulosic feedstocks are resources for sugar production via juice extraction, starch saccharification, and pretreatment and hydrolysis, respectively. Technologies have been developed to attain a high sugar yield; however, production costs are a major consideration in commercializing newly developed approaches to the production of sugars. In this review, the fixed capital and production costs of sugar produced from first‐ and second‐generation crops are summarized. As expected, first‐generation crops provide the lowest fixed capital costs, ranging from 0.01 to 0.13 $ kg−1 feedstock, and have production costs ranging from 0.22 to 0.55 $ kg−1 sugar. For cellulosic crops, because of their recalcitrant structure and complex processing, the fixed capital and production costs are higher, ranging from 0.02 to 1.10 $ kg−1 feedstock and 0.10 to 3.37 $ kg−1 sugar, respectively. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Biodiesel production from vegetable oils has progressively increased over the past two decades. However, due to the low amounts of oil produced per hectare from temperate oilseed crops (e.g. soybean), the opportunities for further increasing biodiesel production are limited. Genetically modified lipid-producing sugarcane (lipid-cane) possesses great potential for producing biodiesel as an alternative feedstock because of sugarcane's much higher productivity compared with soybean. In this study, techno-economic models were developed for biodiesel and ethanol coproduction from lipid-cane, assuming 2, 5, 10, or 20% lipid concentration in the harvested stem (dry mass basis). The models were compared with a conventional soybean biodiesel process model to assess lipid-cane's competiveness. In the lipid-cane process model, the extracted lipids were used to produce biodiesel by transesterification, and the remaining sugar was used to produce ethanol by fermentation. The results showed that the biodiesel production cost from lipid-cane decreased from $0.89/L to $0.59 /L as the lipid content increased from 2 to 20%; this cost was lower than that obtained for soybeans ($1.08/L). The ethanol production costs from lipid-cane were between $0.40/L and $0.46/L. The internal rate of return ( IRR) for the soybean biodiesel process was 15.0%, and the IRR for the lipid-cane process went from 13.7 to 24.0% as the lipid content increased from 2 to 20%. Because of its high productivity, lipid-cane with 20% lipid content can produce 6700 L of biodiesel from each hectare of land, whereas soybean can only produce approximately 500 L of biodiesel from each hectare of land. This would indicate that continued efforts to achieve lipid-producing sugarcane could make large-scale replacement of fossil-fuel-derived diesel without unrealistic demands on land area. © 2016 The Authors. Lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) are increasingly encouraged to enhance their environmental friendliness and safety while maintaining optimal energy density and cost‐effectiveness. Although various electrolytes using greener and safer glyme solvents have been reported, the low charge voltage (usually lower than 4.0 V vs Li/Li+) restricts the energy density of LIBs. Herein, tetraglyme, a less‐toxic, non‐volatile, and non‐flammable ether solvent, is exploited to build safer and greener LIBs. It is demonstrated that ether electrolytes, at a standard salt concentration (1 m), can be reversibly cycled to 4.5 V vs Li/Li+. Anchored with Boron‐rich cathode‐electrolyte interphase (CEI) and mitigated current collector corrosion, the LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 (NMC811) cathode delivers competitive cyclability versus commercial carbonate electrolytes when charged to 4.5 V. Synchrotron spectroscopic and imaging analyses show that the tetraglyme electrolyte can sufficiently suppress the overcharge behavior associated with the high‐voltage electrolyte decomposition, which is advantageous over previously reported glyme electrolytes. The new electrolyte also enables minimal transition metal dissolution and deposition. NMC811||hard carbon full cell delivers excellent cycling stability at C/3 with a high average Coulombic efficiency of 99.77%. This work reports an oxidation‐resilient tetraglyme electrolyte with record‐high 4.5 V stability and enlightens further applications of glyme solvents for sustainable LIBs by designing Boron‐rich interphases. Herein, we demonstrate that these features can be emulated in a prototype hydrogen‐bonded organic framework (HOF) through simply varying the proportion of metalated porphyrin in the structure. Further studies demonstrate that changing the metalloporphyrin content not only realizes a fine tuning of the photosensitizer/catalyst ratio, but also alters the microenvironment surrounding the active site and the charge separation efficiency. As a result, the obtained material achieves the challenging overall CO2 reduction with a high HCOOH production rate (29.8 μmol g−1 h−1, scavenger free), standing out from existing competitors. The VP/VS ratio is an important property for understanding magmatic and tectonic processes at passive continental margins as it is an indicator of the crustal composition. To classify the dominant lithologies in the Zhongsha Block, South China Sea (SCS), we present a detailed VP/VS crustal model based on the independent tomographic inversion of P wave and S wave data. The average VP/VS in the crust of the Zhongsha Block is ∼1.77, indicating an overall felsic to intermediate composition lacking remnant magmatic intrusive rocks. The VP‐density relationship from gravity modeling suggests that the lower crust of the extended continental domain contains more greenschist and hence may have experienced metamorphism resulting from an elevated geotherm in the Northwest Sub‐basin either during the syn‐spreading or postspreading stage. The variability of the VP/VS ratio in the continental block is larger than that in the oceanic basin, showing distinct crustal properties. Several low VP/VS ratio anomalies (VP/VS < 1.7) were found near tectonic boundaries and are interpreted to either result from felsic metamorphism during an interval of rifting, or during the migration of magma along faults and cracks in the postrift period. VP/VS ratios occurring in concert with high VP anomalies in the continent‐ocean transition zone support a mafic composition of metapelitic granulite, which was either formed by magmatic intrusions or contact with mantle melting that stem from the upwelling of the asthenospheric mantle during the initial break‐up and onset of the seafloor spreading stage in the SCS. Plain Language Summary: The composition of offshore continental crust is a mystery due to the difficulty of sampling rocks from depths of several kilometers below the seafloor. However, this information is crucial to understanding the geological processes that shaped our planet. In this study, we use refraction and wide‐angle seismic data to obtain P wave, and S wave velocity structures, and calculate ratios between the VP and VS across the Zhongsha Block in the South China Sea. Density values derived from gravity modeling are used as an additional constraint. The VP/VS ratio in the continental Zhongsha Block ranges from <1.7 to 1.88, while the oceanic Northwest Sub‐basin yields a more compact ratio of ∼1.81, revealing distinct differences between continental and oceanic crust. Furthermore, our results reveal that the rock type of the continental crust was affected by the magmatism related to the adjacent seafloor spreading activities, leading to a larger degree of alteration of the lower crust from the continental to oceanic domain. Low VP/VS anomalies along the tectonic boundaries of the Zhongsha Block trace historical magma upwelling channels. Detailed analysis of the rock type in passive continental margin provides a comprehensive interpretation of the evolution process from rifting to post‐spreading stage. Background: Unintended postoperative hypothermia in infants is associated with increased mortality and morbidity. We noted consistent hypothermia postoperatively in more than 60% of our neonatal intensive care (NICU) babies. Therefore, we set out to determine whether a targeted quality improvement (QI) project could decrease postoperative hypothermia rates in infants. Objectives: Our SMART aim was to reduce postoperative hypothermia (<36.5°C) in infants from 60% to 40% within 6 months. Methods: This project was approved by IRB at Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Center, China. The QI team included multidisciplinary healthcare providers in China and QI experts from Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, USA. The plan‐do‐study‐act (PDSA) cycles included establishing a perioperative‐thermoregulation protocol, optimizing the transfer process, and staff education. The primary outcome and balancing measures were, respectively, postoperative hypothermia and hyperthermia (axillary temperature < 36.5°C, >37.5°C). Data collected was analyzed using control charts. The factors associated with a reduction in hypothermia were explored using regression analysis. Results: There were 295 infants in the project. The percentage of postoperative hypothermia decreased from 60% to 37% over 26 weeks, a special cause variation below the mean on the statistical process control chart. Reduction in hypothermia was associated with an odds of 0.17 (95% CI: 0.06–0.46; p <.001) for compliance with the transport incubator and 0.24 (95% CI: 0.1–0.58; p =.002) for prewarming the OR ambient temperature to 26°C. Two infants had hyperthermia. Conclusions: Our QI project reduced postoperative hypothermia without incurring hyperthermia through multidisciplinary team collaboration with the guidance of QI experts from the USA. Wearable sweat sensors exhibit significant promise in the realm of smart healthcare. Efficient and non‐contaminating continuous sweat collection, transport, and disposal are crucial for enhancing detection accuracy. In this study, a novel wearable sweat sensor is presented that integrates various biomimetic structures, including cactus‐inspired spine, shorebird‐inspired conical through‐holes, and frog‐foot‐inspired micro‐grooves. These structures facilitate sweat droplets to be automatically transported from the skin to the sensing chamber and discharged without external power. First, theoretical analysis, simulation, and experiments based on self‐driven droplet mechanisms to determine the optimal transport efficiency parameters for biomimetic structures are conducted. Next, a novel sweat transport module is fabricated through ultra‐precision 3D printing according to these optimal parameters. And this module has excellent sweat collection performance contrastively. Finally, the novel biomimetic sweat transport module is integrated with a high‐sensitivity glucose detection electrode, resulting in a wearable sweat glucose detection system. Human experiments monitoring glucose metabolism in sweat verify the correlation between glucose concentrations in blood and sweat, which proves the feasibility of reflecting changes in the body's circulatory system by monitoring changes in sweat composition. At non‐volcanic passive continental margins, seismic techniques often failed to uniquely define the nature of crustal domains. Here, we overcome this problem by studying the structure and composition of the continent‐ocean transition (COT) in the Southwest Sub‐basin of the South China Sea, using P and S wave seismic tomography and Vp/Vs ratios, providing unique constraints on lithology. Throughout the image domain, we can rule out large areas of exhumed mantle as Vp/Vs ratios are always <1.9 in the shallow basement layer. Instead, the COT is characterized by extended and fragmented continental crust, and possibly mafic aggregation at the bottom of the crust. In concert with observations from multichannel seismic reflection data, seismic velocities and Vp/Vs ratios suggest that the oldest oceanic crust was formed by starved magmatism, causing rugged basement, thin crust, nearly absent lower crust, and moderately serpentinized mantle below. Our results reveal that rifting occurred without un‐roofing continental mantle. Plain Language Summary: Traditional P wave velocity is not able to reveal the detailed rock types in the crust or lithosphere, which are crucial for analyzing the structures and geodynamics in non‐volcanic continental margins. In this study, we choose the South China Sea as a case study area, using an effective method to image the Vp/Vs ratio, unraveling the rock type distribution of basalt, gabbro/diabase, serpentinized peridotite in our model from top to bottom. We analyzed the variation of the crustal nature and composition from the continent‐ocean transition zone (COT) to the oceanic basin, revealing that the COT is characterized by magmatic intruded continental crust, while the oldest oceanic domain shows a thin oceanic crust overlying mantle that experienced hydration. Our study provides an integrated seismic study which may become a paradigmatic case study to investigate the blurred area of the COT. Bladder cancer (BC), as one of the most common malignant cancers of the urinary system, has a high incidence and mortality rates. Recently, increasing studies have indicated that exosomes can mediate cellular communication in assorted cancers, including BC. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have also been confirmed to take part in the regulation of many cancers. Long intergenic non‐protein coding RNA 1133 (LINC01133) is an lncRNA and its roles in several cancers have been revealed. However, the functions of exosomes and LINC01133 in BC are still not elucidated. In our research, functional assays were conducted to evaluate the function of LINC01133, as well as the influence of exosomes and LINC01133 on BC cells. Western blot assay, immunofluorescence assay, electron microscope, and nanoparticle tracking analysis were applied for detecting the characteristics of exosomes. Bioinformatics tools and quantitative reverse‐transcription polymerase chain reaction were performed to test the expression of LINC01133 in BC cells and exosomes of the immortalized human uroepithelial cell line (SV‐HUC‐1). Luciferase reporter assay was performed to measure the activity of the Wnt pathway. We discovered that LINC01133 expression was high in exosomes of SV‐HUC‐1 and low in that of BC cells. Additionally, exosomes restrained cell viability, proliferation, migration, and invasion. Similarly, LINC01133 exerted the same function on BC cells. In addition, the Wnt signaling pathway could be inactivated by LINC01133. Finally, in vivo experiments demonstrated that cell growth could be suppressed by overexpressed LINC01133. Wearable biosensors are playing an increasingly important role in society. Compared with traditional wearable biosensors for detecting blood pressure, blood oxygen, or pulse conditions, which can only access information from the physical level, biosensors for testing body fluids can provide more details on health conditions through the analysis of biochemical criteria. Sweat secreted from glands distributed throughout the body contains abundant biochemical information and is an indicator of the physical conditions. Because of the noninvasive and safe sampling method, wearable sweat monitoring systems have the potential to realize long‐term and wearable detection. In this review, the current situation of wearable sweat monitoring systems is summarized from three critical parts: the sweat collection method, the sweat analysis method, and the energy supply. Finally, based on the existing drawbacks of wearable sweat monitoring systems in previous studies, the authors creatively propose droplet‐based detection, triboelectric nanogenerator‐based detection, and self‐powered systems as new directions for future research. Ultrathin semiconducting van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures based on transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) play a critical role in developing next‐generation electronic and optoelectronic devices. The replacement of one component of the heterostructure by transition metal oxides (TMOs) certainly brings in numerous benefits including long‐term stability and novel functionalities. However, the single‐step chemical‐vapor deposition growth of TMOs/TMDs vdW heterostructures, as a highly desired approach for large‐scale fabrication and practical implementation, is challenging due to contradictory growth atmospheres of TMOs and TMDs. Here, the single‐step growth of an ultrathin WO3–x/WS2 vdW heterostructure based on the quantity‐driven discrepant interaction between S and the precursor, in which S induces sulfidation to produce WS2 in the S‐rich phase and is changed to the reduction role to obtain sub‐stoichiometric WO3–x in the S‐deficient phase is realized. Both WO3–x and WS2 exhibit semiconducting properties with a favorable type‐II band alignment. A wide response across the entire visible spectrum with a large photo‐responsivity of 4375 A W−1, a detectivity of 5.47 × 1011 Jones, and sub‐ms switching kinetics at 405 nm is achieved without gating bias, which is significantly improved over other reported ultrathin vdW heterostructures. Wearable sweat sensors can analyze the abundant composition of solutes and metabolites in sweat to reflect the health state of the wearers in real time. The realization of active motion control for sweat droplets is significant for a multifunctional sweat monitoring device with several analysis chambers. Here, a wearable droplet‐based human sweat monitoring platform (WSMP), by combining an electrowetting on dielectrics (EWOD) device and a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), is demonstrated. It allows to collect and transport sweat droplets in different chambers by dielectric wetting effect and eventually merge and react with a pH indicator. The mechanical and electrical model of WSMP is introduced to describe the relationship between the open‐circuit voltage of the TENG and the voltage applied on the EWOD device. The high‐voltage electrical field generated by the TENG can change the wettability of solid–liquid interfaces and realize the controlling of droplet motion. The contact angle of electrolyte droplets changes over 30% with the triboelectric voltage of 5 kV. The driving, merging, and color reaction can be realized by actively controlling the motion of droplets. Finally, a wearable WSMP worn on the shank successfully demonstrates the preliminary detection of the pH level of human sweat. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Further studies demonstrate that changing the metalloporphyrin content not only realizes a fine tuning of the photosensitizer/catalyst ratio, but also alters the microenvironment surrounding the active site and the charge separation efficiency. As a result, the obtained material achieves the challenging overall CO2 reduction with a high HCOOH production rate (29.8 μmol g−1 h−1, scavenger free), standing out from existing competitors. This work unveils that the degree of metalation is vital to the catalytic activity of the porphryinic framework, presenting as a new strategy to optimize the performance of heterogeneous catalysts. Benefiting from abundant resource reserves and considerable theoretical capacity, sodium (Na) metal is a strong anode candidate for low‐cost, large‐scale energy storage applications. However, extensive volume change and mossy/dendritic growth during Na electrodeposition have impeded the practical application of Na metal batteries. Herein, a self‐sodiophilic carbon host, lignin‐derived carbon nanofiber (LCNF), is reported to accommodate Na metal through an infiltration method. Na metal is completely encapsulated in the 3D space of the LCNF host, where the strong interaction between LCNF and Na metal is mediated by the self‐sodiophilic sites. The resulting LCNF@Na electrode delivers good cycling stability with a low voltage hysteresis and a dendrite‐free morphology in commercial carbonate‐based electrolytes. When interfaced with O3‐NaNi0.33Mn0.33Fe0.33O2 and P2‐Na0.7Ni0.33Mn0.55Fe0.1Ti0.02O2 cathodes in full cell Na metal batteries, the LCNF@Na electrode enables high capacity retentions, long cycle life, and good rate capability. Even in a "lean" Na anode environment, the full cells can still deliver good electrochemical performance. Summary: The aim of this study was to develop a green ultrasound‐assisted enzymatic process to separate protein from brewer's spent grain (BSG) to produce protein hydrolysates and determine the physicochemical properties of produced protein hydrolysates. When the enzyme (Alcalase) loading increased from 1 to 20 μL g−1 BSG, the protein separation efficiency increased from 34.0% to 61.6%. The application of ultrasound pretreatment further increased protein separation efficiency to 69.8%. More promisingly, the ultrasound pretreatment was able to reduce enzyme loading by 73% and decrease enzyme incubation time by 56%. The produced protein hydrolysates had molecular weights lower than 15 kDa and high protein solubilities at the pH of 1.0–11.0. The ultrasound pretreatment improved the protein solubility to above 90%. Glutamic acid and proline were the most abundant amino acids in produced protein hydrolysates. This study demonstrated that enzymatic hydrolysis along with ultrasound pretreatment is an effective way to separate protein from BSG. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Our study aimed to explore the function of cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) in esophageal cancer. Twenty patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and 20 patients with esophageal adenocarcinoma (EA) were enrolled in this study. The levels of CFTR and NF‐κB in tumor tissues and adjacent normal tissues were detected, respectively. The expression of CFTR were detected by qRT‐PCR and Western blot in normal esophageal cell line, esophagus squamous cell, carcinoma cell lines, and EA cell lines, respectively. Effects of CFTR silencing and overexpression on NF‐κB protein expression were detected by Western blot. Transwell assay was performed to detect cell invasion. Mouse tumor model was established and the effect of CFTR inhibitor on tumor growth was examined. The expression of CFTR was downregulated in tumor tissues and cancer cell lines. CFTR silencing promoted the expression of NF‐κB‐p65 and NF‐κB‐p50, and the results of CFTR overexpression were reversed. In addition, CFTR silencing promoted the invasion of cancer cells and tumor growth in mice. Besides that, NF‐κB inhibitor reduced the enhancing effects of CFTR silencing on esophageal cell invasion. We conclude that CFTR inhibits the growth and migration of esophageal cancer cells by downregulating of the NF‐κB protein expression. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: It has long been recognized that ocean gravity waves can generate microseisms through their interactions and coupling with the solid earth. Their generation mechanisms, wave types, and propagation have been studied and debated intensively. In this study, we focus on the characteristics of microseisms in South China Sea (SCS) and compare them with globally observed microseisms. We use data from six ocean bottom seismometers, 10 publicly available broadband land seismometers near SCS, and a reanalyzed global wave height model from 1 May 2012 to 20 August 2012 (UTC), the time span of ocean bottom seismometers' data. We apply three techniques including power spectral density, correlation, and frequency dependent polarization analysis. Our results show that (1) microseisms observed in SCS are dominated by sources from adjacent oceans, instead of the common global sources from the Pacific, Atlantic, or Indian Ocean; (2) the split of double‐frequency microseisms (DFMs) is observed in SCS, especially on land stations: the sources are located near the central sea basin for long‐period DFMs (0.1–0.25 Hz) and are local near stations for short‐period DFMs (0.25–0.5 Hz); (3) typhoons both strengthen microseisms and affect the source locations of microseisms with the biggest influence on the short‐period DFMs; and (4) microseisms in or near SCS are a mixture of Love and Rayleigh waves and the relative dominance of Love and Rayleigh waves changes with locations.
