Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) binds to angiotensin‐converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) on host cells, via its spike protein, and transmembrane protease, serine 2 (TMPRSS2) cleaves the spike‐ACE2 complex to facilitate virus entry. As rate‐limiting steps for virus entry, modulation of ACE2 and/or TMPRSS2 may decrease SARS‐CoV‐2 infectivity and COVID‐19 severity. In silico modeling suggested the natural bioactive flavonoid quercetin can bind to ACE2 and a recent randomized clinical trial demonstrated that oral supplementation with quercetin increased COVID‐19 recovery. A range of cultured human cells were assessed for co‐expression of ACE2 and TMPRSS2. Immortalized Calu‐3 lung cells, cultured and matured at an air–liquid interface (Calu‐3‐ALIs), were established as the most appropriate. Primary bronchial epithelial cells (PBECs) were obtained from healthy adult males (N = 6) and cultured under submerged conditions to corroborate the outcomes. Upon maturation or reaching 80% confluence, respectively, the Calu‐3‐ALIs and PBECs were treated with quercetin, and mRNA and protein expression were assessed by droplet digital PCR and ELISA, respectively. SARS‐CoV‐2 infectivity, and the effects of pre‐ and co‐treatment with quercetin, was assessed by median tissue culture infectious dose assay. Quercetin dose‐dependently decreased ACE2 and TMPRSS2 mRNA and protein in both Calu‐3‐ALIs and PBECs after 4 h, while TMPRSS2 remained suppressed in response to prolonged treatment with lower doses (twice daily for 3 days). Quercetin also acutely decreased ADAM17 mRNA, but not ACE, in Calu‐3‐ALIs, and this warrants further investigation. Calu‐3‐ALIs, but not PBECs, were successfully infected with SARS‐CoV‐2; however, quercetin had no antiviral effect, neither directly nor indirectly through downregulation of ACE2 and TMPRSS2. Calu‐3‐ALIs were reaffirmed to be an optimal cell model for research into the regulation of ACE2 and TMPRSS2, without the need for prior genetic modification, and will prove valuable in future coronavirus and respiratory infectious disease work. However, our data demonstrate that a significant decrease in the expression of ACE2 and TMPRSS2 by a promising prophylactic candidate may not translate to infection prevention. Amorphous solid‐state electrolytes (SSEs) play a pivotal role as fundamental components within all‐solid‐state lithium batteries, yet their understanding lags behind that of crystalline materials. In this work, a novel amorphous SSE 5Li2S‐3SiS2 (mol %) with a high ionic conductivity of 1.2 mS cm−1 is first reported. The silicon and sulfur atoms in the edge‐sharing Si2S64− are less attracted to lithium compared to the SiS44− anion, which is expected to facilitate the lithium ions conduction in SSEs. More importantly, the relationship between the material properties and local structure in the amorphous thiosilicate SSEs is revealed, particularly highlighting the desirable edge‐sharing local structure. The Si2S64− presents better stability with Li metal. This work offers an important guideline in the development of anion frameworks in amorphous sulfide SSEs for high‐performance all‐solid‐state lithium metal batteries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For cryo‐electron tomography (cryo‐ET) of beam‐sensitive biological specimens, a planar sample geometry is typically used. As the sample is tilted, the effective thickness of the sample along the direction of the electron beam increases and the signal‐to‐noise ratio concomitantly decreases, limiting the transfer of information at high tilt angles. In addition, the tilt range where data can be collected is limited by a combination of various sample‐environment constraints, including the limited space in the objective lens pole piece and the possible use of fixed conductive braids to cool the specimen. Consequently, most tilt series are limited to a maximum of ±70°, leading to the presence of a missing wedge in Fourier space. The acquisition of cryo‐ET data without a missing wedge, for example using a cylindrical sample geometry, is hence attractive for volumetric analysis of low‐symmetry structures such as organelles or vesicles, lysis events, pore formation or filaments for which the missing information cannot be compensated by averaging techniques. Irrespective of the geometry, electron‐beam damage to the specimen is an issue and the first images acquired will transfer more high‐resolution information than those acquired last. There is also an inherent trade‐off between higher sampling in Fourier space and avoiding beam damage to the sample. Finally, the necessity of using a sufficient electron fluence to align the tilt images means that this fluence needs to be fractionated across a small number of images; therefore, the order of data acquisition is also a factor to consider. Here, an n‐helix tilt scheme is described and simulated which uses overlapping and interleaved tilt series to maximize the use of a pillar geometry, allowing the entire pillar volume to be reconstructed as a single unit. Three related tilt schemes are also evaluated that extend the continuous and classic dose‐symmetric tilt schemes for cryo‐ET to pillar samples to enable the collection of isotropic information across all spatial frequencies. Objective: To describe the relationships between different methods of measuring functional fibrinogen levels in severely injured, bleeding trauma patients across multiple timepoints during hospitalisation. Methods: In 100 adult trauma patients enrolled in the FEISTY pilot randomised clinical trial at four tertiary trauma centres in Australia, blood samples were collected prospectively. Consistency of agreement was calculated, comparing functional fibrinogen levels measured by four methods – ROTEM® Delta and Sigma FIBTEM A5, TEG® 6s CFF MA, and gold‐standard Clauss Fibrinogen. Results: Comparing the ROTEM® Delta and new‐generation ROTEM® Sigma machine, consistency of agreement for FIBTEM A5, measured by calculating intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs), was ≥0.73 across all analysed timepoints, with mean differences (Sigma minus Delta) of 0.10–3.57 mm. Corresponding values comparing the ROTEM® Sigma FIBTEM A5 and TEG® 6s CFF MA were ICC = 0.55–0.82 and ICC = 4.69–7.97 (CFF MA minus A5). Comparing ROTEM® Sigma FIBTEM A5 and Clauss Fibrinogen Analysis (CFA), among statistically significant simple linear regression models, R2 was 0.25–0.67, and comparing TEG® 6s CFF MA and CFA (CFA) 0.65–0.82, although not all differences were significant with the latter comparison. Relationships across all timepoints combined were Clauss Fibrinogen (CF) (g/L) = 0.21푥 + 0.004 (where 푥 = ROTEM® Sigma FIBTEM A5 in mm) and (g/L) = 0.16푥 − 0.06 (where 푥 = TEG® 6s CFF MA in mm). Conclusions: The present study revealed acceptable agreement between four different assays measuring functional fibrinogen, with current‐ and previous‐generation ROTEM® machines (Sigma, Delta) performing similarly measuring functional fibrinogen via FIBTEM assay. This suggests that haemostatic resuscitation algorithms designed for the ROTEM® Delta can be applied to the ROTEM® Sigma to guide fibrinogen replacement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Warming temperatures are altering communities and trophic networks across Earth's ecosystems. While the overall influence of warming on food webs is often context‐dependent, increasing temperatures are predicted to change communities in two fundamental ways: (1) by reducing average body size and (2) by increasing individual metabolic rates. These warming‐induced changes have the potential to influence the distribution of food web fluxes, food web stability, and the relative importance of deterministic and stochastic ecological processes shaping community assembly. Here, we quantified patterns and the relative distribution of organic matter fluxes through stream food webs spanning a broad natural temperature gradient (5–27°C). We then related these patterns to species and community trait distributions of mean body size and population biomass turnover (P:B) within and across streams. We predicted that (1) communities in warmer streams would exhibit smaller body size and higher P:B and (2) organic matter fluxes within warmer communities would increasingly skew toward smaller, higher P:B populations. Across the temperature gradient, warmer communities were characterized by smaller body size (~9% per °C) and higher P:B (~7% faster turnover per °C) populations on average. Additionally, organic matter fluxes within warmer streams were increasingly skewed toward higher P:B populations, demonstrating that warming can restructure organic matter fluxes in both an absolute and relative sense. With warming, the relative distribution of organic matter fluxes was decreasingly likely to arise through the random sorting of species, suggesting stronger selection for traits driving high turnover with increasing temperature. Our study suggests that a warming world will favor energy fluxes through "smaller and faster" populations, and that these changes may be more predictable than previously thought. Azetidines are valuable nitrogenous heterocycles. Herein, we disclose a strategy for the modular assembly of 3‐azetidines and related spirocyclic congeners featuring all‐carbon quaternary centers. This approach leverages titanacyclobutanes generated from ketones or alkenes. Halogenation of these organotitanium species gives rise to functionalized alkyl dihalides that can be subsequently captured by amines to afford azetidine building blocks. This strategy facilitated the synthesis of a small molecule anti‐tuberculosis drug. It also enabled access to carbon‐13 isotopologs of diazaspiro[3.3]heptane fragments that are challenging to prepare by any other means. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: Attention is impaired in many neuropsychiatric disorders, as well as by sleep disruption, leading to decreased workplace productivity and increased risk of accidents. Thus, understanding the neural substrates is important. Here we test the hypothesis that basal forebrain neurons that contain the calcium‐binding protein parvalbumin modulate vigilant attention in mice. Furthermore, we test whether increasing the activity of basal forebrain parvalbumin neurons can rescue the deleterious effects of sleep deprivation on vigilance. A lever release version of the rodent psychomotor vigilance test was used to assess vigilant attention. Brief and continuous low‐power optogenetic excitation (1 s, 473 nm @ 5 mW) or inhibition (1 s, 530 nm @ 10 mW) of basal forebrain parvalbumin neurons was used to test the effect on attention, as measured by reaction time, under control conditions and following 8 hr of sleep deprivation by gentle handling. Optogenetic excitation of basal forebrain parvalbumin neurons that preceded the cue light signal by 0.5 s improved vigilant attention as indicated by quicker reaction times. By contrast, both sleep deprivation and optogenetic inhibition slowed reaction times. Importantly, basal forebrain parvalbumin excitation rescued the reaction time deficits in sleep‐deprived mice. Control experiments using a progressive ratio operant task confirmed that optogenetic manipulation of basal forebrain parvalbumin neurons did not alter motivation. These findings reveal for the first time a role for basal forebrain parvalbumin neurons in attention, and show that increasing their activity can compensate for disruptive effects of sleep deprivation. Problem: Preeclampsia (PE), new-onset hypertension during pregnancy accompanied by organ dysfunction, is associated with chronic inflammation including elevated IL- 17, CD4+ T cells, B cells and natural killer (NK) cells. IL-17 can serve as a signal for either the adaptive or innate immune activation.We have previously shown that IL-17 contributes to increased blood pressure in association with elevated TH17 cells, NK cells and B cells secreting angiotensin II type 1 receptor agonistic autoantibodies (AT1- AA) during pregnancy. Moreover, we have shown an important role for CD4+T cells and AT1-AA in multiorgan dysfunction as measured by mitochondrial oxidative stress (mt ROS).However, we do not know the role of adaptive immune cells such as T cells or B cells secreting AT1-AA in mediating the PE phenotype in response to elevated IL-17. Method of study: In order to answer this question, we infused IL-17 (150 pg/day i.p.) into either SpragueDawley (SD) or athymic nude rats via mini-osmotic pump from gestational day (GD) 14--19 of pregnancy. On GD 19, blood pressure was determined and NK cells,mtROS and respiration and AT1-AA production from B cells were measured. Results: Infusion of IL-17 increased blood pressure in the presence or absence of T cells. Mean arterial pressure (MAP) increased with IL-17 from 98 ±2mmHg (n = 12) to 114 ± 2 (n = 12) in SD rats and from 99 ± 4 mmHg (n = 7) versus 115 ± 2 mmHg (n = 7) in athymic nude rats. Similar trends were seen in NK cells and placental mt ROS. Knowing that IL-17 stimulates AT1-AA in SD pregnant rats, we included a group of SD and athymic nude pregnant rats infused with IL-17 and the AT1-AA inhibitor peptide ('n7AAc'). The inhibitor attenuated blood pressure (104.9 ± 3.2, p = .0001) and normalized NK cells andmt function in SD pregnant rats. Importantly, the AT1-AA was not produced in pregnant nude IL-17 treated rats, nor did 'n7AAc' effect MAP, in nude athymic rats. Conclusion: These findings suggest two conclusions; one is that IL-17 causes hypertension and multiorgan dysfunction in the absence of T cells and AT1-AA, possibly through its activation of innate cells and secondly, in the presence of T cells, blockade of the AT1-AA attenuates the effect of IL-17. Natural and anthropogenic disturbances have led to rapid declines in the amount and quality of available habitat in many ecosystems. Many studies have focused on how habitat loss has affected the composition and configuration of habitats, but there have been fewer studies that investigate how this loss affects ecosystem function. We investigated how a large‐scale seagrass die‐off altered the distribution of energetic resources of three seagrass‐associated consumers with varied resource use patterns. Using long‐term benthic habitat monitoring data and resource use data from Bayesian stable isotope mixing models, we generated energetic resource landscapes (E‐scapes) annually between 2007 and 2019. E‐scapes link the resources being used by a consumer to the habitats that produce those resources to calculate a habitat resource index as a measurement of energetic quality of the landscape. Overall, our results revealed that following the die‐off there was a reduction in trophic function across all species in areas affected by the die‐off event, but the response was species‐specific and dependent on resource use and recovery patterns. This study highlights how habitat loss can lead to changes in ecosystem function. Incorporating changes in ecosystem function into models of habitat loss could improve understanding of how species will respond to future change. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Benralizumab is an anti‐interleukin‐5 receptor α monoclonal antibody approved as an add‐on maintenance treatment for patients with uncontrolled severe asthma. Prior Phase 3 studies have evaluated benralizumab in patients aged ≥12 years with severe uncontrolled asthma. The TATE study evaluated the pharmacokinetics (PK), pharmacodynamics (PD), and safety of benralizumab treatment in children. Methods: TATE was an open‐label, Phase 3 study of benralizumab in children aged 6–11 years from the United States and Japan (plus participants aged 12–14 years from Japan) with severe eosinophilic asthma. Participants received benralizumab 10/30 mg according to weight (<35/≥35 kg). Primary endpoints included maximum serum concentration (Cmax), clearance, half‐life (t1/2), and blood eosinophil count. Clearance and t1/2 were derived from a population PK (popPK) analysis. Safety and tolerability were also assessed. Results: Twenty‐eight children aged 6–11 years were included, with an additional two participants from Japan aged 12–14 years also included in the popPK analysis. Mean Cmax was 1901.2 and 3118.7 ng/mL in the 10 mg/<35 kg and 30 mg/≥35 kg groups, respectively. Clearance was 0.257, and mean t1/2 was 14.5 days. Near‐complete depletion of blood eosinophils was shown across dose/weight groups. Exploratory efficacy analyses found numerical improvements in mean FEV1, mean ACQ‐IA, patient/clinician global impression of change, and exacerbation rates. Adverse events occurred in 22/28 (78.6%) of participants; none led to discontinuation/death. Conclusion: PK, PD, and safety data support long‐term benralizumab in children with severe eosinophilic asthma, and were similar to findings in adolescents and adults. Chaperone‐mediated autophagy (CMA) is a lysosome‐dependent degradation pathway that eliminates proteins that are damaged, partially unfolded, or targeted for selective proteome remodeling. CMA contributes to several cellular processes, including stress response and proteostasis. Age‐associated increase in cellular stressors and decrease in CMA contribute to pathologies associated with aging in various tissues. CMA contributes to bone homeostasis in young mice. An age‐associated reduction in CMA was reported in osteoblast lineage cells; however, whether declining CMA contributes to skeletal aging is unknown. Herein we show that cellular stressors stimulate CMA in UAMS‐32 osteoblastic cells. Moreover, the knockdown of an essential component of the CMA pathway, LAMP2A, sensitizes osteoblasts to cell death caused by DNA damage, ER stress, and oxidative stress. As elevations in these stressors are thought to contribute to age‐related bone loss, we hypothesized that declining CMA contributes to the age‐associated decline in bone formation by sensitizing osteoblast lineage cells to elevated stressors. To test this, we aged male CMA‐deficient mice and controls up to 24 months of age and examined age‐associated changes in bone mass and architecture. We showed that lack of CMA did not alter age‐associated decline in bone mineral density as measured by dual x‐ray absorptiometry (DXA). Moreover, microCT analysis performed at 24 months of age showed that vertebral cancellous bone volume, cortical thickness, and porosity of CMA‐deficient and control mice were similar. Porous carbon materials have increasingly drawn interest for applications ranging from supercapacitive energy storage to bioengineering. However, a simple and scalable fabrication process of such materials, employing low‐cost chemical compounds without sacrificing morphological and chemical control, remains lacking. Here, a novel, rapid, continuous bottom‐up strategy for synthesizing structurally tunable porous carbon network films on insulating and conductive substrates is reported. By employing rapid thermal annealing (RTA) of a commercial polyacrylonitrile‐based blend, simultaneous phase separation and thermal crosslinking are induced, effectively freezing the structure. Subsequent burning of degradable components generates a porous carbon framework (d¯pore${\bar{d}}_{{\mathrm{pore}}}$ ≈ 360 to 700 nm) doped with nitrogen and oxygen atoms. Introducing a boron‐containing reagent in the precursor solution enables boron doping and pore size reduction as small as 20 nm, enhancing materials' performance. The direct fabrication of micro‐supercapacitors on stainless steel substrates is demonstrated, achieving an areal capacitance of 12.7 mF cm−2 at 50 mV s−1, with ≈98% retention after 10 000 charge/discharge cycles. The benefit of boron doping is further highlighted for wound healing applications. Because RTA is already an established industrial method, this platform directly facilitates the synthesis of functional porous heteroatom‐doped carbon structures using commercial polymers and dopants for various applications. Rationale: Advances in sulfur isotope measurement techniques have led to increased analytical precision. However, accurate measurement of 36S remains a challenge. This difficulty arises primarily from unresolved isobaric interferences of 36SF5+ at m/z = 131 u, 186WF42+ and 12C3F5+, which lead to scale compression. Theoretically, unresolved interference with 2% relative intensity could cause 1‰ underestimation in a sample with real δ36S = +60‰. Methods: Our study develops an interference‐free four‐sulfur isotope measurement method by using the high‐resolution mass spectrometer Panorama. The mass resolving power of Panorama allows the distinction of 186WF42+ and 12C3F5+ from 36SF5+. Results: The 186WF42+ relative intensity was initially 9.4% that of 36SF5+ but reduced to 1.5% through tuning, while 12C3F5+ relative intensity dropped from 74% to 40% after flushing with air. Three IAEA standards were analyzed with both Panorama and MAT 253. We obtained Δ36SIAEA‐S‐2 = 1.238 ± 0.040‰ and Δ36SIAEA‐S‐3 = −0.882 ± 0.030‰, relative to IAEA‐S‐1, from Panorama, and Δ36SIAEA‐S‐2 = 0.18 ± 0.02‰ and Δ36SIAEA‐S‐3 = 0.11 ± 0.14‰ from MAT 253, while δ34S values from the two instruments are consistent. Conclusion: The measurement discrepancies on 36S between Panorama and MAT 253 highlight the impact of scale compression due to unresolved isobaric interferences. Resolving this problem is crucial for accurate 36S analysis. We recommend replacing the filament material with rhenium, tuning the filament voltage, and avoiding carbon in instruments to eliminate or mitigate interferences. We propose future systematic efforts to calibrate the δ33S, δ34S, and δ36S of IAEA‐S‐1, IAEA‐S‐2, and IAEA‐S‐3 and advise bracketing all three reference materials in the measurement sequences, to enable calibration. The matrix profile serves as a fundamental tool to provide insights into similar patterns within time series. Existing matrix profile algorithms have been primarily developed for the normalized Euclidean distance, which may not be a proper distance measure in many settings. The methodology work of this paper was motivated by statistical analysis of beat‐to‐beat interval (BBI) data collected from smartwatches to monitor e‐cigarette users' heart rate change patterns for which the original Euclidean distance (L2$$ {L}_2 $$‐norm) would be a more suitable choice. Yet, incorporating the Euclidean distance into existing matrix profile algorithms turned out to be computationally challenging, especially when the time series is long with extended query sequences. We propose a novel methodology to efficiently compute matrix profile for long time series data based on the Euclidean distance. This methodology involves four key steps including (1) projection of the time series onto eigenspace; (2) enhancing singular value decomposition (SVD) computation; (3) early abandon strategy; and (4) determining lower bounds based on the first left singular vector. Simulation studies based on BBI data from the motivating example have demonstrated remarkable reductions in computational time, ranging from one‐fourth to one‐twentieth of the time required by the conventional method. Unlike the conventional method of which the performance deteriorates sharply as the time series length or the query sequence length increases, the proposed method consistently performs well across a wide range of the time series length or the query sequence length. Our objective in this paper is to examine the growth of the price of farm milk quotas in Canada, to shed light on their patterns of growth within the last 15 years. Our quota price model is based on the Gordon growth model, supplemented by some important characteristics of the milk quota market. Our explanatory variables include the quota rental price, interest rate, and expectations of both price and quantity growth, all for the province of Alberta over the 2009–2023 time period. Our economic model of quota prices performs well by giving results with the predicted signs for all variables in our model and high levels of statistical significance except for expectations of quantity allocations when entered separately. The model has two variants, one with the expectation of growth in quota rents and the other with the expectation of growth in the quota asset price. Econometric issues related to time series problems are dealt with. The model allows calculation of policy risk, which shows an interesting pattern over this time period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives Patients and Methods Results Conclusions To provide up‐to‐date complication rates for vasectomy in the UK using 15 years of data collected by the Association of Surgeons in Primary Care (ASPC).Data were collected between 2007 and March 2022. A patient questionnaire was completed on the day of surgery and at 4 months postoperatively. Rates of early and late failure, infection, hospital admission or re‐admission, haematoma and post‐vasectomy pain syndrome (PVPS) were recorded. There were no specific exclusion criteria. Complication rates were compared to those published by major urological organisations. Descriptive statistics were utilised, without formal statistical analysis.Over the 15‐year study period, data from 105 393 vasectomies were collected, performed by >150 surgeons. In 2022, 94.4% of surgeons used one test to prove sterility. In all, 65% of patients used a postal sperm test after vasectomy to confirm sterility. Early failure rates were available for 69 500 patients. Early failure occurred in 648 patients (0.93%). Of 99 124 patients, late failure occurred in 41 (0.04%). Of 102 549 vasectomies, postoperative infection was reported in 1250 patients (1.22%), haematoma in 1599 patients (1.56%), and PVPS was reported in 139 patients (0.14%).Vasectomy remains a safe and reliable contraceptive method. The rates of complication were generally lower than those published by major urological organisations. Background Purpose Methods Results Conclusions Linear attenuation coefficients (LACs) in positron emission tomography combined with computed tomography (PET/CT) are derived from CT scans that utilize energy‐integrating detectors (EID‐CT). These LACs are inaccurate when iodine contrast has been injected. Photon counting detector CT (PCD‐CT) may be able to improve the accuracy.To investigate whether PCD‐CT can improve PET/CT quantitative accuracy.Two experiments were performed: one with CT only and one that combined PET and CT. The first experiment used an electron density phantom whose inserts were imaged with EID‐CT and PCD‐CT. The inserts simulated normal human tissues, including bone and iodinated blood. In the case of PCD‐CT, virtual‐monoenergetic images at 190 keV were created. LACs were derived in each case and compared against known values. For inserts with iodine, more accurate LACs were expected with PCD‐CT. The second experiment involved a custom PET phantom with various materials simulating human tissues (blood, iodinated blood, and bone) and 18F radioactivity. Data were first acquired with an EID‐CT‐based PET/CT system and then separately in a PCD‐CT system without PET. PET images were reconstructed using LAC from EID‐CT and PCD‐CT. PET image values were compared against known activity values using recovery coefficients (RC).In the first experiment, LAC based on EID‐CT were in error by as much as 18%, whereas the corresponding PCD‐CT based measurements were within 3%. In the second experiment, minimum, maximum, and mean RC were (96.1%, 115.4%, and 103.8%) for the EID‐CT method, and (95.8%, 105.5%, and 101.0%) for the PCD‐CT method. Aim Method Conclusion The primary aim of the study is to define the post‐colonoscopy colorectal cancer (PCCRC) three‐year rate and the post‐endoscopy upper gastrointestinal cancer (PEUGIC) three‐year rate across public hospitals in Aotearoa New Zealand.This retrospective cohort study will be conducted via the trainee‐led STRATA Collaborative network. All public hospitals in Aotearoa New Zealand will be eligible to participate. Data will be collected on all adult patients who are diagnosed with colorectal adenocarcinoma within 6 to 48 months of a colonoscopy and all adult patients diagnosed with gastroesophageal cancer within 6 to 48 months of an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. The study period will be from 2010 to 2022. The primary outcome is the PCCRC 3‐year rate and the PEUGIC 3‐year rate. Secondary aims are to define and characterize survival after PCCRC or PEUGIC, the cause of PCCRC as based on the World Endoscopy Organization System of Analysis definitions, trends over time, and centre level variation.This protocol describes the methodology for a nationwide retrospective cohort study on PCCRC and PEUGIC in Aotearoa New Zealand. N‐heterocyclic imines such as pyridylidene amines impart high catalytic activity when coordinated to a transition metal, largely imposed by their electronic flexibility. Here, this donor flexibility has been applied for the first time to CAAC‐based systems through the synthesis of CAAC‐triazenes. These new ligands offer a larger π‐conjugation that extends from the N‐heterocyclic carbene through three nitrogens rather than just one, as observed in N‐heterocyclic imines. We demonstrate the straightforward synthesis of three new CAAC‐triazenes containing different substituents on the terminal triazene nitrogen. These compounds are remarkably stable up to 120 °C without loss of N2 as typically observed with similar triazenes. E‐to‐Z isomerization within the triazene is instigated by UV light and is partially reversible dependent on the triazene substituent. The quinoline‐substituted CAAC‐triazene 1‐Q has been applied as an L,L'‐type ligand in the synthesis of [PdCl2(1‐Q)], [PdCl(Me)(1‐Q)] and [Pd(Me)(H2O(1‐Q)]+. E‐to‐Z ligand isomerization also occurs when coordinated to PdCl2, providing access to on‐metal manipulation. The cationic complex [PdMe(H2O)(1‐Q)]+ is a precatalyst for oligomerization of ethylene to form initially 2‐butene and subsequently linear and branched C8−C12 products from butene activation. Background Methods Results Conclusion In December 2021, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration published a letter to clinical laboratory staff and healthcare providers detailing a risk of false Rapid Plasma Reagin (RPR) when using the Bio‐Rad Laboratories BioPlex 2200 Syphilis Total & RPR kit in people who had received COVID‐19 vaccination; Treponema pallidum particle agglutination assays did not appear to be impacted by this issue. We evaluated reactivity rates of syphilis screening with negative confirmatory testing at our institution by year and seasonality.We performed a retrospective study of routine syphilis testing of whole blood (WB) collections at an academic hospital‐based donor center in the eastern United States. All WB donations from 2011 to 2023 which demonstrated reactive syphilis screening (Beckman Coulter PK TP Microhemagglutination) with negative confirmatory testing (CAPTIA Syphilis (T. pallidum)‐G) were evaluated. Reactivity rates by year and season of donation were compared using unpaired t‐tests.A total of 109 WB donations from 86 unique donors who donated from 2011 to 2023 screened reactive for syphilis with negative confirmatory testing. The unconfirmed syphilis reactivity rate increased from 2018 to 2023 (mean: 0.360%) compared to 2011–2017 (mean: 0.071%, p < .05). An autumnal peak in unconfirmed reactives was observed.The unconfirmed syphilis reactivity rate among WB donors at our institution increased markedly since 2017 compared to the 7 years prior and doubled from 2020 to 2021. Purpose: To investigate bacterial contamination of indirect ophthalmoscopes and condensing lenses used in three UK veterinary referral centers, and the impact of an implemented cleaning protocol. Methods: Bacteriology samples from 10 indirect ophthalmoscopes and 10 condensing lenses were taken at each center (n = 30 T0), before initiating one of three cleaning frequencies (every 2 weeks/once weekly/daily) for 28 days. The most contaminated indirect ophthalmoscope and condensing lens from each center were re‐sampled 30 min prior to (T1; n = 9) and 30 min after (T2; n = 9) the final clean. Sensitivity testing was completed using MIC. Results: Seventy‐three isolates representing 15 different bacterial populations (genus/species) were cultured from 36 of 48 (75%) swabs tested. The most frequently cultured isolates were Staphylococcus spp. 30%, Micrococcus 22%, and Bacillus 14%. Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Pantoea, and Staphylococcus pseudintermedius demonstrated resistance to >50% of antibiotics against which they were tested. Eighty‐three percent of T0 samples (54 isolates across 11 species, median 2 isolates/swab), all T1 samples (15 isolates across 8 species, median 2 isolates/swab), and 22% of T2 samples (4 isolates across 4 species, median 0 isolates/swab) were contaminated. Head contact points were most contaminated irrespective of time point. A T1 sample was 57 times more likely (95% CI: 2.4–1376) to have a positive culture than a T2 sample (p =.01). Conclusions: Baseline contamination was high, representing a potential source of nosocomial infection in ophthalmic patients and handlers of diagnostic equipment. The neurodegenerative effects alcohol use disorder (AUD) have been well characterized and are likely due to the long‐term effects of alcohol on the brain. The molecular events that underlie regional neuronal loss are a focus of current research. Chronic inflammation in the central nervous system, termed neuroinflammation, contributes to the progressive loss of neurons in the brain. Using data from genome‐wide association studies and genetic and gene expression data, α‐synuclein was identified as a gene of interest for AUD almost 10 years ago. Despite this and the well‐recognized role of α‐synuclein in mediating neuroinflammation in other neurodegenerative diseases, its role in alcohol‐induced brain damage and AUD is yet to be elucidated. This systematic literature review quantifies and analyzes relationships between AUD, α‐synuclein, and neuroinflammation. The review identified fewer studies focused on the role in AUD of α‐synuclein (30) than on neuroinflammation (177), with published studies heavily centered on the myeloid differentiation primary response 88 (MyD88)‐dependent toll‐like receptor 4 (TLR4) pathway. The systematic review revealed that no original literature investigates the roles of α‐synuclein and neuroinflammation in AUD and that there are significantly fewer published articles on the role of α‐synuclein in AUD than in other neuroinflammatory conditions. Studies of the role of neuroinflammation in AUD are largely centered on the TLR4 signaling cascade, followed by TLR2 and TLR3, and soluble cytokines such as IL‐10, IL‐1β, and TNF‐α. Restoring the heterogeneity of farmland mosaics can help mitigate the ongoing global decline of biodiversity. It has been shown that semi‐natural habitats in viticultural landscapes influence biodiversity in vineyards. However, less attention has been paid to the influence of the extent of vineyard fields and their arrangement in the landscape.Using previously published data, we investigated the influence of both semi‐natural habitats and vineyard fields on arthropod diversity in vineyards in 35 viticultural landscapes located in South Africa and Austria. Effects on several arthropod groups were assessed using standardised landscape predictors that integrate compositional (total area) and configurational (shape and spatial arrangement) heterogeneity of semi‐natural habitats and vineyards. In addition, we assessed the influence of within‐vineyard vegetation cover and farming system (organic or non‐organic) to explore local‐scale effects.Within‐vineyard vegetation and flower cover had a consistent positive influence on most arthropod taxa, whereas farming system had little effect. In addition, configurational heterogeneity of semi‐natural vegetation and vineyards influenced several taxa. However, different taxa showed contrasting relationships with configurational heterogeneity, hindering general recommendations for optimal configuration of semi‐natural elements and vineyards in the landscape. The only significant response to compositional heterogeneity was bug abundance in South Africa, which increased with increasing proportion of semi‐natural elements.We found that increasing vegetation cover in vineyards is an effective and easily implementable measure to improve biodiversity in vineyards. In addition, the spatial arrangement of vineyards influences within‐vineyard arthropod diversity as much as the spatial arrangement of semi‐natural vegetation in the landscape, which expands the possibilities for planning viticultural landscapes with high overall biodiversity. Millimeter‐to‐nanometer‐sized iron‐ and nickel‐rich metals are ubiquitous on the lunar surface. The proposed origin of these metals falls into two broad classes which should have distinct geochemical signatures—(1) the reduction of iron‐bearing minerals or (2) the addition of metals from meteoritic sources. The metals measured here from the Apollo 16 regolith possess low Ni (2–6 wt%) and elevated Ge (80–350 ppm) suggesting a meteoritic origin. However, the measured Ni is lower, and the Ge higher than currently known iron meteorites. In comparison to the low Ni iron meteorites, the even lower Ni and higher Ge contents exhibited by these lunar metals are best explained by impact‐driven volatilization and condensation of Ni‐poor meteoritic metal during their impact and addition to the lunar surface. The presence of similar, low Ni‐bearing metals in Apollo return samples from geographically distant sites suggests that this geochemical signature might not be restricted to just the Apollo 16 locality and that volatility‐driven modification of meteoritic metals are a common feature of lunar regolith formation. The possibility of a significant low Ni/high Ge meteoritic component in the lunar regolith, and the observation of chemical fractionation during emplacement, has implications for the interpretation of both lunar remote‐sensing data and bulk geochemical data derived from sample return material. We develop a theoretical framework for establishing whether a semigroup of transformations or partitions on an arbitrary infinite set X$X$ has a finitely generated universal right/left congruence, and, if it does, determining its right/left diameter. We apply this to prove results such as the following. Each of the monoids of all binary relations on X$X$, of all partial transformations on X$X$, and of all full transformations on X$X$, as well as the partition and partial Brauer monoids on X$X$, have right diameter 1 and left diameter 1. The symmetric inverse monoid on X$X$ has right diameter 2 and left diameter 2. Introduction: Alcohol screening among Indigenous Australians is important to identify individuals needing support to reduce their drinking. Understanding clinical contexts in which clients are screened, and which clients are more or less likely to be screened, could help identify areas of services and communities that might benefit from increased screening. Methods: We analysed routinely collected data from 22 Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations Australia‐wide. Data collected between February 2016 and February 2021 were analysed using R, and aggregated to describe screening activity per client, within 2‐monthly extraction periods. Descriptive analyses were performed to identify contexts in which clients received an Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test consumption (AUDIT‐C) screen. Multi‐level logistic regression determined demographic factors associated with receiving an AUDIT‐C screen. Three models are presented to examine if screening was predicted by: (i) age; (ii) age and gender; (iii) age, gender and service remoteness. Results: We observed 83,931 occasions where AUDIT‐C was performed at least once during a 2‐monthly extraction period. Most common contexts were adult health check (55.0%), followed by pre‐consult examination (18.4%) and standalone item (9.9%). For every 10 years' increase in client age, odds of being screened with AUDIT‐C slightly decreased (odds ratio 0.98; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.98, 0.99). Women were less likely to be screened with AUDIT‐C (odds ratio 0.95; 95% CI 0.93, 0.96) than men. Discussion and Conclusions: This study identified areas where alcohol screening can be increased (e.g., among women). Increasing AUDIT‐C screening across entire communities could help reduce or prevent alcohol‐related harms. Future Indigenous‐led research could help identify strategies to increase screening rates. Restoration of root hemiparasite trees, such as Hawaiʻi's endemic Santalum species (ʻiliahi), may benefit from underplanting in stands of suitable hosts like the nitrogen‐fixing native tree, Acacia koa (koa). At a pasture site on Hawaiʻi Island previously reforested with koa, we underplanted seedlings of the island‐endemic sandalwood species, Santalum paniculatum, to examine the tradeoff between access to an established root network (distance to the nearest koa tree) under variable overstory shading (8.8–90.1% canopy openness range) during regeneration establishment. We hypothesized that there is an optimal parasite–host spacing and canopy openness that balance parasitic resource transfer with light availability. ʻIliahi seedling survival was 96% with no survival treatment differences. 'Iliahi seedling growth was positively related to canopy openness but negatively related to the distance to the nearest koa tree, and the slope of these relationships increased over time. Leaf photosynthetic light compensation points, light saturation points, and stomatal density mostly followed similar trends as growth. These results demonstrate that 'iliahi can be successfully underplanted in an established koa stand, which benefits 'iliahi plantings and contributes to diversifying initial restoration and reforestation plantings. There appears to be a significant tradeoff in planting distance between benefits from and competition with the host; however, the improvement in growth with increased canopy openness appeared to be much greater than the effect of planting distance. The decline of wild bee pollinators has prompted habitat reconstruction in many regions around the world in order to increase the floral resources available to pollinators. Relatively little research has monitored the genetic differentiation and the relatedness of founding bumblebee populations during the colony recruitment process after vegetation is planted in the landscape. We surveyed nine 3‐year post‐planting reconstructed prairie sites located in the corn belt of the U.S. Midwest, where the landscape is largely dominated by industrialized row crops. Using seven microsatellite loci from 103 Bombus griseocollis, we examined the population genetics of this generalist bee's colonies established on these newly constructed prairie sites. When analyzed, B. griseocollis populations from an older reconstructed site were more genetically distinct from newly established bumblebee populations on reconstructed sites, while the new reconstructed sites exhibited no genetic structure. The floral richness or abundance at the reconstructed sites did not contribute to the allelic richness of the recolonized bumblebee populations. We did, however, find significant negative correlations between the bumblebee populations' allelic richness and the percent coverage of row‐crop farmland in the surrounding landscape and positive correlations between the allelic richness and forest and woody wetland habitat covers. Plant–plant interactions, often studied in the context of plant traits, are considered crucial assembly mechanisms for plant communities and offer insights into how neighbours affect growth. Three key questions regarding these interactions have theoretical importance but limited empirical support: (1) does similarity in plant traits enhance competitive interactions among species, (2) is the "competitive environment" determined through plant traits of the resident species, and (3) do greater species diversity and niche use result in increased competition among co‐occurring species. Here we use a simple experimental design to directly test these foundational questions.In a mesocosm experiment using native grassland fragments, we investigated our questions simultaneously by manipulating trait relationships among resident and colonizing plants. To assess the net impact of neighbours on plant growth, we measured the degree of suppression experienced by focal plants compared to growth in the absence of neighbours. We further tested whether trait‐function relationships are context‐dependent by modifying available resources.Contrary to the limiting similarity hypothesis, we found that reduced overall dissimilarity mitigated neighbour‐induced growth suppression, with more negative effects occurring among dissimilar neighbours. The influence of trait dissimilarity depended on nutrient context and was stronger under increased resource availability. We found little support for the idea that specific plant traits are "functional" in creating competitive environments: no community traits (community weighted means) were associated with net neighbour effects. In contrast, resource supply significantly affected species interactions, with increased resources exacerbating negative neighbour effects on plant growth.We found that plant trait dissimilarity does function in competition but is contingent on resource context. However, trait values were not inherently competitive: traits may have physiological functions but did not function in focal plants' competitive response. We provide some of the limited data directly testing the core mechanisms of community assembly. Global forests are increasingly lost to climate change, disturbance, and human management. Evaluating forests' capacities to regenerate and colonize new habitats has to start with the seed production of individual trees and how it depends on nutrient access. Studies on the linkage between reproduction and foliar nutrients are limited to a few locations and few species, due to the large investment needed for field measurements on both variables. We synthesized tree fecundity estimates from the Masting Inference and Forecasting (MASTIF) network with foliar nutrient concentrations from hyperspectral remote sensing at the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) across the contiguous United States. We evaluated the relationships between seed production and foliar nutrients for 56,544 tree‐years from 26 species at individual and community scales. We found a prevalent association between high foliar phosphorous (P) concentration and low individual seed production (ISP) across the continent. Within‐species coefficients to nitrogen (N), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg) are related to species differences in nutrient demand, with distinct biogeographic patterns. Community seed production (CSP) decreased four orders of magnitude from the lowest to the highest foliar P. This first continental‐scale study sheds light on the relationship between seed production and foliar nutrients, highlighting the potential of using combined Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) and hyperspectral remote sensing to evaluate forest regeneration. The fact that both ISP and CSP decline in the presence of high foliar P levels has immediate application in improving forest demographic and regeneration models by providing more realistic nutrient effects at multiple scales. Background Aim Methods Results Conclusion Current guidelines highlight a paucity of evidence guiding optimal timing for non‐ST‐elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) in high‐risk and non‐high‐risk cases.We assessed long‐term major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) in NSTEMI patients undergoing early (<24 h) versus delayed (>24 h) coronary angiography at 6 years. Secondary end‐points included all‐cause mortality and cumulative MACE outcomes.Baseline characteristics and clinical outcomes were assessed among 355 patients presenting to a tertiary regional hospital between 2017 and 2018. Cox proportional hazard models were generated for MACE and all‐cause mortality outcomes, adjusting for the Global Registry of Acute Coronary Events (GRACE) score, patient demographics, biomarkers and comorbidities.Two hundred and seventy patients were included; 147 (54.4%) and 123 (45.6%) underwent early and delayed coronary angiography respectively. Median time to coronary angiography was 13.3 and 45.4 h respectively. At 6 years, 103 patients (38.1%) experienced MACE; 41 in the early group and 62 in the delayed group (hazard ratio (HR) = 2.23; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.50–3.31). After multivariable adjustment, the delayed group had higher rates of MACE (HR = 1.79; 95% CI = 1.19–2.70), all‐cause mortality (HR = 2.76; 95% CI = 1.36–5.63) and cumulative MACE (incidence rate ratio = 1.54; 95% CI = 1.12–2.11). Subgroup analysis of MACE outcomes in rural and weekend NSTEMI presentations was not significant between early and delayed coronary angiography (HR = 1.49; 95% CI = 0.83–2.62).Higher MACE rates in the delayed intervention group suggest further investigation is needed. Keloid disorder is a morbid and disfiguring benign fibroproliferative disease with a higher incidence in groups with darker skin pigmentation. Predicting keloidogenesis in patients is difficult with treatment primarily aimed at preventing further scar expansion and improving aesthetics without addressing their unknown underlying pathophysiology. We aimed to identify potential genetic predispositions to keloid scarring in the literature. A search was conducted on 21 August 2023, by the first and second authors independently from 1985 to August 2023 using PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus and CINAHL. The following MeSH terms were used: ‘Keloid’, ‘Risk’ and ‘Genetic’. Two researchers independently searched for studies based on titles and abstracts and screened filtered articles by reviewing full text. If no agreement could be reached, a third senior author designated whether the article should be included. We used the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses 2020 statement as the basis of our organisation. Human studies with genetic analysis to determine an association of a protein or gene to keloidogenesis were selected for inclusion. Studies in languages other than English, reviews, conference articles, and book chapters were excluded. Fifty studies met inclusion criteria. The human leukocyte antigen (HLA) system was broadly implicated, and the DRB1*15 allele was associated with an increased risk of keloid in three separate ethnic groups. Some HLA Class I alleles were associated with keloid in one population but not in others. Additionally, polymorphisms in the E3 ubiquitin‐protein ligase (NEDD4) signal cascade and vitamin D receptor (VDR) have been implicated in diverse groups. No current genetic test can predict keloid risk. Our review identified candidate predisposing genes, including NEDD4, VDR and components of the HLA system. Hierarchical models can express ecological dynamics using a combination of fixed and random effects, and measurement of their complexity (effective degrees of freedom, EDF) requires estimating how much random effects are shrunk toward a shared mean. Estimating EDF is helpful to (1) penalize complexity during model selection and (2) to improve understanding of model behavior. I applied the conditional Akaike Information Criterion (cAIC) to estimate EDF from the finite‐difference approximation to the gradient of model predictions with respect to each datum. I confirmed that this has similar behavior to widely used Bayesian criteria, and I illustrated ecological applications using three case studies. The first compared model parsimony with or without time‐varying parameters when predicting density‐dependent survival, where cAIC favors time‐varying demographic parameters more than conventional Akaike Information Criterion. The second estimates EDF in a phylogenetic structural equation model, and identifies a larger EDF when predicting longevity than mortality rates in fishes. The third compares EDF for a species distribution model fitted for 20 bird species and identifies those species requiring more model complexity. These highlight the ecological and statistical insight from comparing EDF among experimental units, models, and data partitions, using an approach that can be broadly adopted for nonlinear ecological models. Despite evidence inferring muscle and contractile mode‐specific effects of high‐fat diet (HFD), no study has yet considered the impact of HFD directly on eccentric muscle function. The present work uniquely examined the effect of 20‐week HFD on the isometric, concentric and eccentric muscle function of isolated mouse soleus (SOL) and extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscles. CD‐1 female mice were randomly split into a control (n = 16) or HFD (n = 17) group and for 20 weeks consumed standard lab chow or HFD. Following this period, SOL and EDL muscles were isolated and assessments of maximal isometric force and concentric work loop (WL) power were performed. Each muscle was then subjected to either multiple concentric or eccentric WL activations. Post‐fatigue recovery, as an indicator of incurred damage, was measured via assessment of concentric WL power. In the EDL, absolute concentric power and concentric power normalised to muscle mass were reduced in the HFD group (P < 0.038). HFD resulted in faster concentric fatigue and reduced eccentric activity‐induced muscle damage (P < 0.05). For the SOL, maximal isometric force was increased, and maximal eccentric power normalised to muscle mass and concentric fatigue were reduced in the HFD group (P < 0.05). HFD effects on eccentric muscle function are muscle‐specific and have little relationship with changes in isometric or concentric function. HFD has the potential to negatively affect the intrinsic concentric and eccentric power‐producing capacity of skeletal muscle, but a lack of a within‐muscle uniform response indicates disparate mechanisms of action which require further investigation. Psychological Critical Race Theory (PCRT) was introduced in 1998. PCRT illustrates the integral connection of psychological research and theory to the legal framework of Critical Race Theory (CRT). Five tenets of PCRT were described: (1) Spontaneous and persistent influence of race; (2) Fairness is derived from divergent racial experiences; (3) Asymmetrical consequences of racial policies; (4) Paradoxes of racial diversity; and (5) Racial identity requires a multidimensional approach. These tenets are reviewed and updated. A new set of seven PCRT principles are proposed that provide a broad framework within which to examine the PCRT concept and its role in reframing critical approaches to racial justice. Principle 1: Race and culture make each other up; Principle 2: Meaning Matters; Principle 3: Multilevel analysis is critical to unraveling Systemic Racism; Principle 4: Activism is a lever for social change; Principle 5: Power drives racial inequality; Principle 6: Storytelling disrupts status quo narratives; Principle 7: Diversity does not ameliorate systemic racism. PCRT is a 100‐year enterprise of psychological science, offering a complex and comprehensive framework for understanding and ameliorating persistent racial inequality. Introduction/Aims Methods Results Discussion Fatigue is a common and debilitating symptom encountered in the neuromuscular clinic. The 7‐item Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS‐7) is a Rasch‐modified assessment validated in inflammatory neuropathies but not across a typical neuromuscular patient population. The aim of this study was to validate this measure in neuromuscular disorders and to compare between patient sex, age and diagnoses.The modified FSS‐7 was mailed to patients recruited from a specialist neuromuscular clinic at the Walton Centre. Responses were subjected to Rasch analysis and descriptive statistics were performed on the Rasch converted data.The mFSS‐7 met the Rasch model expectations with an overall Chi‐square probability of 0.4918, a strict unidimensional scale free from differential item functioning (DIF) that satisfied the model with substantial test–retest reliability using Lin's concordance correlation coefficient 0.71 (95% CI 0.63–0.77). A 15.7% ceiling effect was observed in this patient cohort. Post hoc analysis did not show any significant difference in fatigue between sex, age or neuromuscular diagnoses.The self‐completed Rasch mFSS‐7 showed acceptable test–retest reliability across patients with varied disorders under follow‐up in a specialist neuromuscular clinic. The ceiling effect constrains its use for those with the most severe fatigue. Background Methods Results Conclusion Advanced skull base malignancies are a heterogenous subset of head and neck cancers, and management is often complex. In recent times, there has been a paradigm shift in surgical technique and the advent of novel systemic options. Our goal was to analyse the long‐term outcomes of a single quaternary head and neck and skull base service.A retrospective review of 127 patients with advanced anterior skull base malignancies that were treated at our institution between 1999 and 2015 was performed. Multiple variables were investigated to assess their significance on 5 and 10‐year outcomes.The mean age was 60.9 (± 12.6 SD). Sixty‐four percent were males and 36% were females. Ninety percent of patients had T4 disease. Median survival time was 133 months. The 5‐year overall survival (OS) was 66.2%, disease‐specific survival (DSS) was 74.7%, and recurrence‐free survival (RFS) was 65.0%. The 10‐year OS was 55.1%, DSS was 72.1%, and RFS was 53.4%. Histological type and margin status significantly affected OS & DSS.Surgical management of advanced skull base tumours has evolved over the last few decades at our institution with acceptable survival outcomes and complication rates. Histological diagnosis and margin status are the main predictors of survival. The addition of neoadjuvant systemic agents in current trials may improve outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A prominent scholarship contends that presidential norms are particularly vital to a well‐functioning democracy. However, scant empirical research exists on the topic. I investigate public attitudes toward a novel battery of what many scholars and journalists consider presidential norms and examine the extent to which partisan and policy concerns affect attitudes toward them. Original survey data show that Americans strongly support presidential norms. I argue that there are two salient dimensions of presidential norms—what I call structural norms and presentation norms. Structural norms promote and support constitutional government. Presentation norms concern expectations about when and how presidents should present themselves before the public. Partisans evaluate the two types of presidential norms differentially, with Republicans notably expressing lower support for structural norms. I then present experimental evidence that the public's support for presidential norms is malleable to partisan framing. These results suggest that the public supports presidential norms in the abstract, but compelling rhetoric can facilitate presidential norm violations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The first televised presidential campaign commercials ran in the 1952 electoral contest between Dwight Eisenhower and Adlai Stevenson, specifically as part of the effort to draft and then elect General Eisenhower. These first spot ads were developed not by political parties or the candidates but by an independent citizens group, Citizens for Eisenhower. The group developed two distinct styles of television advertising. The best known of these stemmed from the hard‐sell Madison Avenue tradition of public relations and its advertising innovator, Rosser Reeves, who produced the “Eisenhower Answers America” campaign. Less well known is an ad created by volunteer workers from the Disney Corporation, who produced an animated, musical rendition promising that “We'll Take Ike to Washington.” Unlike Reeves's more substantive ads that focused on issues, the Disney ads emphasized the image and character of the candidate. Using archival sources, this article shows that the televised marketing of the presidency stemmed not only from the public relations experts and Madison Avenue advertisers like Reeves but also from those connected to the entertainment industry who sought to manipulate the public through character appeals. The vertebral column, a defining trait of all vertebrates, is organized as a concatenated chain of vertebrae, and therefore its support to the body depends on individual vertebral morphology. Consequently, studying the morphology of the vertebral centrum is of anatomical and clinical importance. Grass carp (GC) is a member of the infraclass Teleostei (teleost fish), which accounts for the majority of all vertebrate species; thus, its vertebral anatomical structure can help us understand vertebrate development and vertebral morphology. In this study, we have investigated the morphology and symmetry of the grass carp vertebral centrum using high‐resolution micro‐CT scans. To this end, three abdominal vertebrae (V9, V10, & V11) from eight grass carp were micro‐CT scanned and then segmented using Dragonfly (ORS Inc.). Grass carp vertebral centrum conformed to the basic teleost pattern and demonstrated an amphicoelous shape (biconcave hourglass). The centrum's cranial endplate was smaller, less circular, and shallower compared to the caudal endplate. While the vertebral centrum demonstrated bilateral symmetry along the sagittal plane (left/right), the centrum focus was shifted dorsally and cranially, breaking dorsoventral and craniocaudal symmetry. The sum of these findings implies that the caudal aspect of grass carp vertebral centrum is bigger and more robust. Currently, we have no information whether this is due to nature, for example, differences in gene expression, or nurture, for example, environmental effect. As the vertebral parapophyses and spinous processes are slanted caudally, the direction of muscle action during swimming may create a gradient of stresses from cranial to caudal, resulting in a more robust caudal aspect of the vertebral centrum. Expanding our study to include additional quadrupedal and bipedal (i.e., human) vertebrae, as well as testing if these morphological aspects of the vertebrae are indeed plastic and can be affected by environmental factors (i.e., temperature or other stressors) may help answer this question. Enhancing carbohydrate export from source to sink tissues is considered to be a realistic approach for improving photosynthetic efficiency and crop yield. The rice sucrose transporters OsSUT1, OsSWEET11a and OsSWEET14 contribute to sucrose phloem loading and seed filling. Crucially, Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) infection in rice enhances the expression of OsSWEET11a and OsSWEET14 genes, and causes leaf blight. Here we show that co‐overexpression of OsSUT1, OsSWEET11a and OsSWEET14 in rice reduced sucrose synthesis and transport leading to lower growth and yield but reduced susceptibility to Xoo relative to controls. The immunity‐related hypersensitive response (HR) was enhanced in the transformed lines as indicated by the increased expression of defence genes, higher salicylic acid content and presence of HR lesions on the leaves. The results suggest that the increased expression of OsSWEET11a and OsSWEET14 in rice is perceived as a pathogen (Xoo) attack that triggers HR and results in constitutive activation of plant defences that are related to the signalling pathways of pathogen starvation. These findings provide a mechanistic basis for the trade‐off between plant growth and immunity because decreased susceptibility against Xoo compromised plant growth and yield. Summary statement: The study reported in this manuscript concerns the emerging topic of the roles played by SWEET sugar transporters in plant immunity. The data reported in this manuscript show that overexpression of Clade III SWEET sucrose transporters OsSWEET11a and OsSWEET14 that are exploited by bacterial blight pathogen Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae to acquire sugars for its propagation elicits immune responses and activates plant defence responses leading to enhanced resistance against bacterial as well as fungal pathogens. The findings obtained by the overexpression of OsSWEET11a and OsSWEET14 in rice show that sucrose transport occurs via an apoplastic route, and overexpression of these sugar transporters inhibits sucrose synthesis and transport, which explains the inverse relationships between plant growth and yield, and resistance to pathogens. Moreover, our results show that sucrose transport and pathogen responses are coupled processes, and provide evidence for the concept that pathogen‐induced starvation is linked to plant defence. Also, to the best of our knowledge this is the first study where we show that disease susceptibility genes OsSWEET11a and OsSWEET14 can lead to hypersensitive reaction leading to enhanced plant immunity. A digraph G $G$ is k $k$‐geodetic if for any (not necessarily distinct) vertices u,v $u,v$ there is at most one directed walk from u $u$ to v $v$ with length not exceeding k $k$. The order of a k $k$‐geodetic digraph with minimum out‐degree d $d$ is bounded below by the directed Moore bound M(d,k)=1+d+d2+⋯+dk $M(d,k)=1+d+{d}^{2}+\cdots +{d}^{k}$. The Moore bound can be met only in the trivial cases d=1 $d=1$ and k=1 $k=1$, so it is of interest to look for k $k$‐geodetic digraphs with out‐degree d $d$ and smallest possible order M(d,k)+ϵ $M(d,k)+{\epsilon }$, where ϵ ${\epsilon }$ is the excess of the digraph. Miller, Miret and Sillasen recently ruled out the existence of digraphs with excess one for k=3,4 $k=3,4$ and d≥2 $d\ge 2$ and for k=2 $k=2$ and d≥8 $d\ge 8$. We conjecture that there are no digraphs with excess one for d,k≥2 $d,k\ge 2$ and in this paper we investigate the structure of minimal counterexamples to this conjecture. We severely constrain the possible structures of the outlier function and prove the nonexistence of certain digraphs with degree three and excess one, as well closing the open cases k=2 $k=2$ and d=3,4,5,6,7 $d=3,4,5,6,7$ left by the analysis of Miller et al. Over the last fifty years, a number of higher energy X‐ray sources have been suggested as alternatives for the usual AlKα source found in the first commercial XPS systems and still the standard anode material for XPS today. This paper reviews the development of a number of such sources, predominantly in the authors' laboratory, and the rationale behind the desire to extend the binding energy range of the technique. The achromatic sources SiKα, ZrLα and TiKα are described along with monochromatic sources AgLα and CrKβ, both based on the standard quartz monochromator geometry but taking higher orders of diffraction. The driving force for much of this development was the desire to probe deeper core levels and CCC Auger transitions. These could be combined into initial or final state Auger parameters as described in much of the work cited in this review. The highest energy source considered is the CuKα source based around an external X‐ray tube, which provides much insight into the electronic structure of steels by measurement of the Fe1s and FeKLL peaks. The last decade or so has seen a significant increase of interest in HAXPES, and all manufacturers of turn‐key XPS instruments offer HAXPES options of one form or another, there are three dedicated HAXPES systems commercially available, which are very briefly described. Building a reliable S‐wave velocity model remains challenging from P‐wave land seismic data as multi‐parameter elastic full waveform inversion which updates P‐ and S‐wave velocities simultaneously is not yet widely adopted due to its computational cost, highly nonlinear nature and noise contamination from land seismic data. To overcome this challenge, we propose implementing the SH‐wave full waveform inversion to obtain the S‐wave velocity model. The value of this approach has been examined by applying two‐dimensional time‐domain SH‐ and P‐wave acoustic full waveform inversion to a nine‐component three‐dimensional seismic survey acquired in the Midland Basin. The nine‐component seismic survey was acquired by using both vertical and horizontal component vibrators and receivers, which enables us to apply both SH‐ and P‐wave full waveform inversion to the raw and preprocessed shot gathers along a two‐dimensional line. The SH‐ and P‐wave full waveform inversion applied to the raw shot gathers provide more detailed P‐ and S‐wave velocities compared to the velocities from the stacking velocity analysis. Additionally, there are no problematic artefacts in the inverted S‐wave velocity model, which shows the stability of the SH‐wave inversion. Through the SH‐wave full waveform inversion from the preprocessed shot gathers, we reveal the lateral velocity variations in the Grayburg–San Andres interval, which coincides with the depositional environment changes suggested by the previous regional study mainly based on well log and cores. These variations demonstrate that SH‐wave full waveform inversion can identify additional geological features that are not observed in the inverted P‐wave velocity model. The inverted P‐ and SH‐wave velocities are validated by the flattening of the events observed in the common image gathers after Kirchhoff depth migration. The SH‐wave migration image further reveals the irregular geometries of carbonates in the Spraberry formation. Vp/Vs ratios calculated from the independently inverted P‐ and S‐wave velocity models show strong lateral variations in the Wolfcamp interval (key‐producing interval), which could be caused by the organic content variations between the reservoir and non‐reservoir rocks. The inversion results demonstrate that the SH‐wave full waveform inversion can be used to provide an S‐wave velocity model that is comparable to the P‐wave velocity model derived from acoustic full waveform inversion, which is widely used for P‐wave velocity model building from P‐wave land seismic data. Aim: To better understand the potential impact of climate change on butterfly assemblages across a tropical island, we model the potential for taxonomic and functional homogenization and determine climate‐ and trait‐mediated shifts in projected species distributions. Location: Puerto Rico. Methods: We used thousands of museum records of diurnal Lepidoptera to model current (1970–2000) and forecast future (2061–2080) species distributions and combined these to test for taxonomic and functional homogenization. We then quantified climatic‐mediated effects on current and forecasted taxonomic and functional composition and, specifically, whether temperature was a primary driver, as predicted by the temperature–size rule and the thermal melanism hypotheses. Finally, we measured wing traits important in thermoregulation (size and colour) and determined trait‐mediated changes in forecasted species distributions over time. Results: Based on ensemble model outputs, taxonomic and functional richness and turnover were predicted to vary across the island's complex topography. Our models projected an increase in taxonomic and functional richness over time, and a decrease in taxonomic and functional turnover – a signature of biotic homogenization. Under future climate scenarios, models projected a decrease in wing length and an increase in wing brightness at higher elevations. One variable, temperature seasonality, was the strongest predicted driver of both the current spatial distribution and the projected per cent change over time for not only wing traits but also taxonomic and functional richness and turnover. Main conclusions: The species distribution models generated here identify several priority regions and species for future research and conservation efforts. Our work also highlights the role of seasonality and climatic variability on diverse tropical Lepidoptera assemblages, suggesting that climatic variability may be an important, albeit overlooked, driver of climate change responses.
