Objectives: To analyse the occurrence of calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumours (CEOT) based on biopsy records from different Brazilian geographic regions and to contrast the data with a review of the literature. Materials and methods: A 2‐step study was conducted. Step 1 consisted of a collaborative study of biopsies obtained from 1953 to 2017 at six Brazilian oral and maxillofacial pathology centres. Evaluation of 86,268 biopsy records was performed. Demographic and histopathological diagnosis data were assessed. In Step 2, a review of the literature of case reports and cases series of CEOT identified across five electronic databases was conducted. Results: In the collaborative study, 32 cases of CEOT were evaluated. This figure represented 0.03% of the oral and maxillofacial lesions and 1.7% of all odontogenic tumours across the centres. Women in the fourth decade of life were more affected. CEOT occurred more in the mandible than in the maxilla (ratio 1.9:1). The review of the literature showed that Asian individuals were more affected by this neoplasm. Conclusions: Useful knowledge on the epidemiology, treatment and follow‐up of CEOT has been provided. Background: Peripheral (extraosseous) odontogenic tumors are rare, and reports in the literature have mainly been single case reports or a small series of cases. The aim of this study was to determine the relative frequency of peripheral (extraosseous) odontogenic tumors relative to one another and relative to their central (intraosseous) counterparts in an oral pathology biopsy service and to compare these data with information available in the literature. Methods: The files of the Pacific Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Laboratory of the University of the Pacific, San Francisco, CA, USA, served as the source of material for this study. Files were systematically searched for all cases of peripheral odontogenic tumors (POTs) during a 20-year-period. Results: There were 91 178 cases accessed in which central and POTs were identified in 1133 (1.24%), central tumors in 1088 (1.2%), and peripheral tumors in 45 (0.05%). Peripheral tumors accounted for 4% of all 1133 central and POTs. Peripheral odontogenic fibroma (PODF) was the most common of the 45 POTs accounting for 51.1% (23 cases) followed by peripheral ameloblastoma (PA) 28.9% (13 cases) and peripheral calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor (PCCOT) 13.3% (six cases). Peripheral calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor, peripheral ameloblastic fibroma, and peripheral ameloblastic carcinoma were also identified – each comprised 2.2% (one case each). PODF was more common than its central counterpart by a 1.4:1 ratio. This was the only peripheral tumor that was more common than its central counterpart. PA accounted for 9.3% of all ameloblastomas and PCCOT for 26% of all calcifying cystic odontogenic tumors. Conclusion: There is only scarce information in the literature on the relative frequency of POTs. Additional studies should be conducted to determine the true relative frequency. To ensure accuracy, pathologists with experience in the field of odontogenic tumors should conduct these studies. Background: Metastatic tumors to the oral cavity are rare, representing about 1% of oral tumors, and they affect jaws more often than the oral soft tissues. Methods: Fifteen cases of metastases to the jaw bones from thyroid carcinoma were found in a recent review, with no cases located in the oral mucosa. Results: The authors describe the first cases of gingival metastasis from a thyroid medullary carcinoma. Conclusions: Periodontists must recognize oral soft tissue metastases because they can be the first sign of an undiscovered malignancy, and they can be easily mistaken with several different benign lesions. Prostate cancer is the cause of 10% of cancer-related deaths in males in the United States. Metastases are found late in the course of the disease. Metastatic tumors of the oral cavity are rare, representing about 1% of oral tumors and affect jaws much more frequently than soft tissues. Metastatic prostate cancer tends to involve the bones of the axial skeleton. In a recent review, 22 cases of metastases to the 390 cases. On the other hand, only 1 case of a metastasis to the oral soft tissues was reported. The authors describe the second case of oral soft tissue metastasis from a prostate cancer. The metastatic lesion was located in the gingiva. Clinicians should be aware of oral soft tissue metastases since they can be the first sign of a not yet diagnosed malignant tumor and they can be very easily confused with several different benign lesions. Oral cavity metastases mostly originals from the breasts, lungs, or kidneys. Transitional cell carcinoma (TCC), the most frequent malignant tumor of the urinary bladder, rarely metastasizes to the jaws. To the best of our knowledge, only 8 cases of bladder carcinoma have been reported in the English literature to metastasize to the jawbones. A new case of mandibular metastasis of urinary bladder TCC with extension to the gingiva is presented In a 64-year-old white man. The patient was referred for a periodontal infection of the upper right first molar. The clinical examination also showed a gingival swelling located in the lower left premolar region with a hypoasthesia of the left side of the lower lip. The gingival mass was biopsied, and the microscopy showed a mandibular metastatic TCC of the urinary bladder extending to the gingiva. Periodontists should be aware that, although gingival metastases are rare, when they occur they may mimic other local benign pathological conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ameloblastomas do not generally show evidence of induction, however rare cases associated with an odontome have been reported, and are referred to as odontoameloblastoma. In this paper the first known case of an ameloblastoma showing evidence of induction of dentinoid by tumor cells but without concomitant formation of enamel is recorded. The lesion occurred in the angle and ramus of the mandible of a 24-yr-old Asian man and was largely unicystic. In one area however, solid tumor was present which consisted both of infiltrating follicles of typical ameloblastoma tissue and solid sheets of ovoid to spindle cells containing abundant amounts of a homogenous eosinophilic extracellular material, interpreted as dentinoid, and psammamomatous type dystrophic calcifications. Electron microscopic examination of formalin-fixed tissue showed this dentinoid material to consist of interlacing collagen fibrils embedded in a structureless ground substance. At the periphery of the dentinoid globules the collagen fibres were arranged in parallel layers. A final diagnosis of dentinoameloblastoma was made. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The first international colloquium on basal cell nevus syndrome (BCNS) was held at Saint Louis University School of Medicine and supported by the Basal Cell Carcinoma Nevus Syndrome (BCCNS) Life Support Network (www.gorlinsyndrome.org). The foremost goal of the conference was to review and revise the prior diagnostic criteria and define the surveillance recommendations for affected pediatric and adult patients to allow for early intervention. The invited consensus group participants included geneticists, dermatologists, orthopedists, neurologists, and dental/oral medicine specialists, who treat patients with BCNS or related disorders. This group also included individuals who have a research interest in BCNS and who additionally serve on the medical advisory board of the BCCNS Life Support Network. Expert opinion was based on the collective clinical and research experience of the consensus group participants after presentation and review of the previously published literature regarding diagnosis and treatment of BCNS. A consensus was achieved and agreed upon by open roundtable discussion of the group participants. The consensus statement outlines the proposed diagnostic and management protocols that will hopefully limit morbidity and mortality for affected individuals until more specific and targeted therapies are widely available., (Copyright © 2011 Wiley-Liss, Inc.)

This review paper reports recent advances in the subject of developmental odontogenic cysts, essentially those of the past decade, starting with reference to the new WHO classification (1). On keratocysts, the latest reported recurrence rates are assessed as are their mode of growth, immunocytochemistry, immunology, genetic studies, and work on specific keratocyst antigens. There is a critical account of the group of lesions which includes the gingival cyst of adults, lateral periodontal cyst, botryoid odontogenic cyst and glandular odontogenic cyst, and their possible relationship to one another. On dentigerous cysts, reference is made to the relationship between them and deciduous teeth, as well as to their immunocytochemistry and immunology. Recent work on the unicystic ameloblastomas, their classification and prognosis, is assessed, as is the calcifying odontogenic cyst and its relationship with solid odontogenic tumours.
