Aronia, a healthy fruit well known as black chokeberry, has health-promoting effects on hypertension, oxidative stress, and diabetes. Despite many reports of bioactivities of aronia, there is little scientific research on the potential for immune-enhancement. So, anthocyanin-fucoidan nanocomplex (AFNC, a nanocomplex of aronia extract and fucoidan) has been developed to improve immune-enhancement. This study aimed to identify immunomodulatory effects and underlying mechanisms of AFNC using RAW264.7 macrophages and cyclophosphamide-induced immunosuppressed mice. As a result, AFNC-treated RAW264.7 macrophages elevated the production of IL-2, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and nitric oxide (NO). AFNC-enhanced inducible NO synthase expression via nuclear factor-κB signaling pathways. AFNC dosedependently increased levels of IL-2, IL-6, TNF-α, IL-10, IL-12, interferon-γ, or IL-4 in the serum and spleen of immunosuppressed mice. Taken together, AFNC encourages the immune-enhancing activity through immunostimulatory cytokine production by activation of macrophage. Therefore, these results suggest that AFNC is useful for immunodeficiency-related disorders. Practical applications: In these days of prevalence of infectious diseases, individual immunity is very important. AFNC has the immune-enhancing effects through immunostimulatory cytokine production by activation of macrophage. Lotus-type porous copper with long cylindrical pores aligned parallel to the solidification direction was studied for use as an antibacterial material. The antibacterial performance of lotus-type porous copper samples with different specific surface areas against Escherichia coli was investigated. The results confirmed that the antibacterial effect gradually increased with specific surface area. The correlation between the pore structure of lotus-type porous metals and their antibacterial effect was also analyzed in detail. The article investigates the efficacy of simvastatin in combination with irinotecan and cisplatin in chemotherapy-naive patients with extensive-disease small-cell lung cancer (ED-SCLC). The results indicate that efficacy of the treatment is affected by smoking status. The study also showed that ever-smokers had a better response rate (RR), a longer progression-free survival (PFS), and had a trend toward an improved overall survival (OS) than those who never smoked.

The article investigates the role of amifostine and epoetin-α in the reduction of toxicities in chemo-hyperfractionated radiotherapy (CCRT) for limited disease small cell lung cancer (LD-SCLC). Results revealed that while amifostine treatment during CCRT was not effective in reducing severe toxicities such as higher febrile neutropenia and nausea, epoetin-α was able to prevent severe anemia during CCRT in LD-SCLC patients.

The article reports on a study to examine the growth kinetics of metastatic tumors in the brain during chemotherapy and the volumetric doubling time and growth rates of such tumors in patients suffering from non-small cell lung cancer with regrowth of the tumors. Results suggest that brain MRI should be performed at least every two months to screen to metastatic tumors in the brain.

Background: The purpose of the study was to investigate whether polymorphisms of p53 codon 72 (Arg72Pro) and MDM2 SNP309 (309T>G) affect p53 expression and the clinical outcome of patients with advanced nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC).Methods: A total of 148 NSCLC patients, previously enrolled in 2 different prospective clinical trials, were genotyped for the p53 Arg72Pro and MDM2 309T>G polymorphisms. Immunohistochemical staining of p53 protein was performed on 61 tumor samples. Genotypes were correlated with p53 expression, clinicopathologic factors, tumor response, and survival. Multivariate logistic or Cox regression analyses were used to adjust for possible confounding variables.Results: The distribution of sex, age, performance status, stage, tumor histology, and smoking habit was not significantly different among polymorphism variants. However, a significant association was observed between p53 Arg72Pro polymorphism and primary resistance to chemotherapy. Patients with the Pro/Pro variant were more likely to be resistant to first-line chemotherapy, especially the irinotecan plus cisplatin regimen, than those with Arg/Arg or Arg/Pro variants (60% vs 27%, P = .014). In multivariate analysis, the Pro/Pro genotype was strongly predictive for shorter progression-free survival (PFS) (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.952, P = .01). The p53 overexpression was associated with MDM2 SNP309. The TT genotype showed more p53 overexpression than TG or GG genotypes (P = .036). In multivariate analysis, the MDM2 TT genotype was independently predictive for longer survival (HR = 1.742, P = .032).Conclusions: The p53 72Pro/Pro variant was predictive for primary resistance to chemotherapy and shorter progression-free survival. The MDM2 SNP309 was associated with less p53 overexpression and prognostic for worse survival. Genotyping these polymorphisms may be useful for predicting the clinical outcome of advanced NSCLC. Background: The current study was performed to compare the nonplatinum-based combination of gemcitabine and vinorelbine (GV) with the combination of irinotecan and cisplatin (IP) as first-line chemotherapy with second-line crossover in patients with advanced nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC).Methods: Patients were randomly assigned to received either irinotecan at a dose of 65 mg/m(2) plus cisplatin at a dose of 30 mg/m(2) (Arm A) or gemcitabine at a dose of 900 mg/m(2) plus vinorelbine at a dose of 25 mg/m(2) (Arm B), each of which was administered on Days 1 and 8 every 3 weeks as the first-line therapy followed by crossover at the time of disease progression.Results: A total of 146 patients were enrolled (75 patients in Arm A and 71 patients in Arm B); 138 patients were evaluable for tumor response and toxicity. During first-line therapy, IP was found to result in more grade 2+ nausea and vomiting (toxicity was graded according to the National Cancer Institute Common Toxicity Criteria [version 2.0]) (41% vs 12%; P = .0001) and alopecia (36% vs 10%; P = .0003). Pneumonitis was noted only with GV therapy (7% vs 0%; P = .058). During second-line therapy, IP was found to result in more grade 3 diarrhea (17% vs 2%; P = .039) and GV featured more cases of grade 3+ neutropenia (78% vs 40%; P = .0003). IP tended to generate more tumor responses (38% vs 26% as first-line therapy, and 30% vs 13% as second-line therapy) compared with GV. IP also demonstrated a favorable trend in median progression-free survival (4.6 months vs 3.8 months as first-line therapy and 4.5 months vs 2.6 months as second-line therapy) and overall survival (15.9 months vs 13.1 months; P = .3), but this difference was not statistically significant. The majority of patients who were refractory to IP also failed to respond to GV in the second-line setting.Conclusions: The platinum-based IP regimen appeared to be superior to the GV combination in terms of response rate. However, given the similar survival and better tolerability of the nonplatinum GV regimen, either treatment sequence would appear to be acceptable for the treatment of patients with advanced NSCLC. The article presents a randomized trial which assesses the feasibility of primary chemotherapy in terms of efficacy, survival, toxicity profile and quality of life of nonsmall cell lung cancer patients. It reveals close correlation between intracranial and extracranial tumor responses, however, cognitive function appears to deteriorate. It concludes that primary chemotherapy is feasible and appropriate for patients with synchronous brain metastasis without neurologic symptoms.

The article discusses a study on the effects of ABCB1, ABCC2 and ABCG2 genetic polymorphisms on the pharmacokinetics of irinotecan and clinical outcome of patients with advanced nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The study involved the blood samples of 107 NSCLC patients to be able to determine the genotype of the polymorphisms. Results show specific polymorphisms of ABCB1 and ABCC2 can affect disposition and tumor response to irinotecan through transporter activity regulation.

We examined the infiltration pattern of water in a regolith–bedrock profile consisting of two overburdens (OB1 and OB2), a buried rice paddy soil (PS), two texturally distinctive weathered materials (WM1 and WM2) and a fractured sedimentary rock (BR), using a Brilliant Blue FCF dye tracer. A black‐coloured coating in conducting fractures in WM1, WM2 and BR was analysed by X‐ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The dye tracer penetrated to greater than 2 m depth in the profile. The macropore flow and saturated interflow were the major infiltration patterns in the profile. Macropore flow and saturated interflow were observed along fractures in WM1, WM2 and BR and at the dipping interfaces of PS–WM1, PS–WM2 and PS–BR respectively. Heterogeneous matrix flow occurred in upper overburden (OB1) and PS. Compared with OB1, the coarser textured OB2 acted as a physical barrier for vertical flow of water. The PS with low bulk density and many fine roots was another major conducting route of water in the profile. Manganese oxide and iron oxide were positively identified in the black coating material and had low crystallinity and high surface area, indicating their high reactivity with conducting contaminants. The precise anatomical location and pathophysiology of gait ignition failure (GIF) is poorly understood. We investigated the cerebral perfusion patterns using subtraction brain single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) in a patient with GIF.
