Availability of long-term and high-quality instrumental climate records is still insufficient and the rich heritage of meteorological surface observations is largely underexploited in many parts of the world. This is particularly striking over the Greater Mediterranean region ( GMR), where meteorological observations have been taken since the 18th century at some locations. The lack of high quality and long series here is despite this region being regarded as a climate change hot spot. This article mainly assesses relevant sources containing Mediterranean historical climate data and metadata either from online repositories worldwide or physical archives, with the emphasis here on the rich holdings kept at French archives. A particular case study is the data rescue ( DARE) program undertaken by the Algerian National Meteorological Service, as well as some of the past and ongoing projects and initiatives aimed at enhancing climate data availability and accessibility over the GMR. Our findings point to the high potential for undertaking DARE activities over the GMR and the need for bringing longer and higher quality climate time series to support a diverse number of scientific and technical assessments and policies. An abundance of methods have been developed over the years to perform the frequency analysis (FA) of extreme environmental variables. Although numerous comparisons between these methods have been implemented, no general comparison framework has been agreed upon so far. The objective of this paper is to build the foundation of a data-based comparison framework, which aims at complementing more standard comparison schemes based on Monte Carlo simulations or statistical testing. This framework is based on the following general principles: (i) emphasis is put on the predictive ability of competing FA implementations, rather than their sole descriptive ability measured by some goodness-of-fit criterion; (ii) predictive ability is quantified by means of reliability indices, describing the consistency between validation data (not used for calibration) and FA predictions; (iii) stability is also quantified, i.e., the ability of a FA implementation to yield similar estimates when calibration data change; and (iv) the necessity to subject uncertainty estimates to the same scrutiny as point estimates is recognized, and a practical approach based on the use of the predictive distribution is proposed for this purpose. This framework is then applied to a case study involving 364 gauging stations in France, where 10 FA implementations are compared. These implementations correspond to the local, regional, and local-regional estimation of Gumbel and generalized extreme value distributions. Results show that reliability and stability indices are able to reveal marked differences between FA implementations. Moreover, the case study also confirms that using the predictive distribution to indirectly scrutinize uncertainty estimates is a viable approach, with distinct FA implementations showing marked differences in the reliability of their uncertainty estimates. The proposed comparison framework therefore constitutes a valuable tool to compare the predictive reliability of competing FA implementations, along with the reliability of their uncertainty estimates. Previous results from our laboratory have shown that 17β-oestradiol prevents 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) striatal dopamine depletion. 17β-oestradiol, oestriol and oestrone are the naturally occurring oestogens in humans. Using various dopamine markers, the present study investigated whether oestrone and oestriol such as 17β-oestradiol have neuroprotective activity in MPTP-treated mice. Male mice were treated with 17β-oestradiol, oestriol or oestrone for 5 days before and after MPTP administration, and were compared with nonlesioned mice receiving the same treatment. Striatal concentrations of dopamine and its metabolites, 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) and homovanillic acid (HVA), were assayed by high-performance liquid chromatography. Dopamine transporter (DAT) and vesicular monoamine transporter (VMAT2) specific binding were measured by autoradiography. DAT, VMAT2 and tyrosine hydroxylase mRNA levels were measured by in situ hybridisation. MPTP induced a loss of DAT and VMAT2 specific binding in the striatum and substantia nigra, as well as a decrease of VMAT2 mRNA in the substantia nigra. 17β-oestradiol treatment prevented the loss of these dopaminergic markers, as well as striatal concentrations of dopamine, DOPAC and HVA. Mice receiving oestriol and oestrone showed catecholamine concentrations comparable to MPTP mice. Oestriol treatment had no effect on dopaminergic markers in MPTP mice whereas oestrone prevented striatal DAT loss and the decrease of VMAT2 mRNA in the substantia nigra. In nonlesioned mice, 17β-oestradiol, oestriol or oestrone had no effect on all the dopaminergic markers investigated. In conclusion, a weak or a lack of effect of oestriol and oestrone was observed compared to 17β-oestradiol in MPTP mice and none of these steroids had an effect in nonlesioned mice. A DAT and VMAT2 specific binding decrease after MPTP in the striatum and substantia nigra, as well as a decrease of substantia nigra VMAT2 mRNA, was observed and could be prevented by oestradiol. Environmental influences on carbon isotope fractionation in tree rings require further elucidation in order to use this parameter as a biological marker of climatic variations. δ13C values in tree-ring cellulose of beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) were analysed for the period from 1950 to 1990. A bioclimatic model of water balance was used to give the actual evapotranspiration as well as the soil water content on a daily basis. δ13C shows a significant decrease from -24.5‰ to -25‰ over this period. Internal CO2 concentration changes from 200 to 220 ppm in relation with the rise of atmospheric CO2. Beside a slight, non-significant inter-individual variation, a large year-to-year variation exists. The relative extractable soil water of July, combined with the value of δ13C for the previous year, predicts as much as 70% of this variance. Air temperature or precipitation accounted for less variation. δ13C is strongly correlated with basal area increment, but appeared a more reliable indicator of water status at the stand level.
