The lithospheric architecture of passive margins is crucial for understanding the tectonic processes that caused the breakup of Gondwana. We highlight the evolution of the South Atlantic passive margins by a simple thermal lithosphere‐asthenosphere boundary (LAB) model based on onset and cessation of rifting, crustal thickness, and stretching factors. We simulate lithospheric thinning and select the LAB as the T = 1,330°C isotherm, which is calculated by 1D advection and diffusion. Stretching factors and margin geometry are adjusted to state‐of‐the‐art data sets, giving a thermal LAB model that is especially designed for the continental margins of the South Atlantic. Our LAB model shows distinct variations along the passive margins that are not imaged by global LAB models, indicating different rifting mechanisms. For example, we model up to 200 km deep lithosphere in the South American Santos Basin and shallow lithosphere less than 60 km in the Namibe Basin offshore Africa. These two conjugate basins reflect a strong asymmetry in LAB depth that resembles variations in margin width. In a Gondwana reconstruction, we discuss these patterns together with seismic velocity perturbations for the Central and Austral Segments of the margins. The shallow lithosphere in the Namibe Basin correlates with signatures of the Angola Dome, attributed to epeirogenic uplift in the Neogene, suggesting an additional component of post‐breakup lithospheric thinning. Plain Language Summary: Passive margins mark the transition zone from a continent to the ocean without being an active boundary of tectonic plates. They are typical for all continents on the globe. In the South Atlantic, the passive margins are located adjacent to the eastern coastline of South America and the western coastline of Africa. Studying the architecture of passive margins is essential for understanding plate tectonic history of the earth because they define how the continents once fitted together and how they broke apart. Passive margin segments on opposite sides of an ocean form so called conjugate margin pairs. Most geophysical studies of passive margins focus on the first few kilometers under the surface. However, their deeper extension to the base of the rigid shell of the earth, known as lithospheric thickness, is to a large extent unknown. Based on a simple temperature model, we find that the lithospheric thickness is highly variable and shows large variations along the South Atlantic passive margins. These differences are associated with the extension of conjugate margin pairs: where one margin is narrower than the conjugate, its lithospheric thickness is greater. This asymmetry indicates that the geodynamic processes, causing the breakup of the two continents, must have been asymmetric as well. Offshore Angola, the lithosphere is modeled shallow and matches with relatively young rock signatures. This suggests additional tectonic activity on the African side after the breakup between the two continents occurred. The Caribbean plate is an enclosed oceanic basin whose formation and evolution are controversial. In the most commonly accepted model, the Caribbean plate is mainly composed of the Caribbean Large Igneous Province (CLIP) and the buoyant characteristic of this oceanic plateau resisted subduction and allowed an eastward migration to its present position north of South America. In this study, we integrate a broad range of geophysical and geomorphological data to define structural elements and present‐day tectonics of the Caribbean plate and the surrounding region. We present a Bouguer gravity anomaly map and a new crustal thickness map that documents large areas of normal‐thickness oceanic crust within the Venezuela and Colombia basins of the Caribbean plate. Selected cross sections of seismicity and P‐wave anomalies from a seismic tomographic model depict the present‐day geometry of subducting oceanic plates within the Caribbean region. We observe that rather than resisting subduction, as expected for the thick crust of a buoyant large igneous province, the subduction of the Caribbean plate can be traced to a depth of 600 km beneath NW South America. This, together with the crustal thickness map, implies that a significant area of the Caribbean plate, including the subducted portion, is composed of normal‐thickness oceanic crust. As proposed by the Pacific origin model, the Caribbean plate likely migrated eastward from the Pacific Ocean as an oceanic plate mostly with normal‐thickness crust and limited portions of the crust thickened by hot spot volcanism (CLIP). Plain Language Summary: The Caribbean plate and northern South America are studied using topography and multiple geophysical data sets, including gravity, magnetics, crustal thickness, seismicity, and seismic images of the upper mantle. These data sets were used to analyze crustal properties as well as the past and present interaction of tectonic plates in this region. Our results show large areas of ocean crust with normal thickness within the Caribbean plate. Seismicity in the circum‐Caribbean subduction zones rarely exceeds 200 km in depth, whereas seismic imaging shows subducting slabs reach a depth of 600 km or more. This implies that subduction has been long‐lived at these active margins. These results also show that the Caribbean plate is subducting beneath NW South America, something that would not be expected for the thick crust of a buoyant large igneous province. The lunar mascon basins are characterized by high gravity anomalies and thin crust. Study of the density structure beneath the mascon basins can help to understand the origin of these gravity anomalies and infer their formation and evolution. We propose an efficient forward gravity method based on the 3‐D Gauss‐Legendre quadrature (GLQ) and Fast Fourier Transforms combined with the adaptive discretization strategy to ensure high accuracy. The numerical example demonstrates that computational efficiency is increased by about three orders of magnitude compared to the traditional 3D GLQ method. We employ this forward method in a 3‐D inversion of the gravity data derived from the lunar gravity model GL1500E. The inverted results show prominent high‐density structures (namely, mascons) representing significant mantle uplift and thinned crust beneath most impact basins. Marked low‐density rings surround the mascons. Most of the corresponding low‐density anomalies extend from the near‐surface to the Moho, indicating a thick, low‐density crust. Our density model is consistent with the formation processes of mascons that an impact causes collapse of the transient crater and then the shocked mantle drives mantle flow. The low‐density rings surrounding the mascons may stem from the crust thickening following an impact and extensive fracturing of the crustal column. Plain Language Summary: Mascons (i.e., mass concentration) have been found beneath most of the lunar impact basins. Knowledge of their density distribution is vital for understanding of their structure and evolution. The mass excesses in some impact basins extend from the base of the lunar crust to about 60 km depth and correspond to a density anomaly of up to 400 kg/m3. These mass concentrations are usually surrounded by a ring of low‐density crust. These features are consistent with the hypothesis that the mascons were formed after an asteroid impact and the upwelling mantle material filling the impact crater. This high‐density material produces the mass excess under the impact basins, while the broken crustal material forms the thick low‐density crust around the mascons. The GRACE mission has had a revolutionary impact on the study of Earth system processes, but it provides a band‐limited representation of mass changes. This is particularly problematic when studying mass changes that tend to be concentrated in fairly narrow zones near the edges of the Greenland Ice Sheet. In this study, coarse‐resolution estimates of the mass change derived from GRACE have been enhanced by the introduction of heuristic scaling factors applied to model surface mass balance and observed surface elevation change. Corresponding results indicate large spatial heterogeneity in the gridded scaling factors at the 0.5° × 0.5° scale, reflecting significant mass losses concentrated along the ice sheet margin and relatively small internal ice sheet changes at higher elevations. The scaled GRACE‐derived vertical displacements are in the range from −2 to 14 mm/year from 2003 to 2015. The Greenland GPS network was used to examine the downscaling GRACE predictions of the crustal displacements. The results show consistency of scaled GRACE‐predicted and GPS‐observed seasonal and long‐term uplift in major drainage basins of Greenland. Our results indicate that GRACE predictions underestimate vertical displacements at sites located in regions characterized by concentrated loads, but perform well in other regions. Differences between predicted and observed uplift rates are mainly caused by the sensitivity kernels, because GPS and GRACE estimates are based on weighted averages of mass loss in different sensitivity ranges. Moreover, a large uncertainty in the glacial isostatic adjustment correction may also cause errors in the GPS‐to‐GRACE ratio. An efficient forward modeling algorithm for calculation of gravitational fields in spherical coordinates is developed for 3‐D large‐scale gravity inversion problems. The 3‐D Gauss‐Legendre quadrature (GLQ) is used to calculate the gravitational fields of mass distributions discretized into tesseroids. Equivalence relations in the kernel matrix of the forward modeling are exploited to decrease storage and computation time. The numerical tests demonstrate that the computation time of the proposed algorithm is reduced by approximately 2 orders of magnitude, and the memory requirement is reduced by N′λ times compared with the traditional GLQ method, where N′λ is the number of the model elements in the longitudinal direction. These significant improvements in computational efficiency and storage make it possible to calculate and store the dense Jacobian matrix in 3‐D large‐scale gravity inversions. The equivalence relations can be applied to the Taylor series method or combined with the adaptive discretization to ensure high accuracy. To further illustrate the capability of the algorithm, we present a regional synthetic example. The inverted results show density distributions consistent with the actual model. The computation took about 6.3 hr and 0.88 GB of memory compared with about a dozen days and 245.86 GB for the traditional 3‐D GLQ method. Finally, the proposed algorithm is applied to the gravity field derived from the latest lunar gravity model GL1500E. Three‐dimensional density distributions of the Imbrium and Serenitatis basins are obtained, and high‐density bodies are found at the depths 10–60 km, likely indicating a significant uplift of the high‐density mantle beneath the two mascon basins. Abstract: It is generally accepted that convergence of the Arabian and African plates is a subduction‐dominated process. However, the subduction scenarios are still debatable. Here we present a 3‐D model of the mantle to a depth of 700 km, based on a joint interpretation of the seismic tomography, residual topography, residual mantle gravity field, and seismicity. At the northwestern edge of the collision zone, we only observe partial underthrust of the Eurasian plate under the West Greater Caucasus. We suggest that this is the initial stage of subduction polarity reversal after the break off of the plate formerly subducted northward. To the southeast, counteracting subduction zones are found beneath northwest Zagros in the south and beneath the East Greater Caucasus and Alborz in the north. This scenario is likely the result of highly buoyant and weak blocks of the Lesser Caucasus, Alborz, and northwest Zagros, which are underlain in the south by the Arabian plate and the Scythian plate and South Caspian from the opposite side. Further to the southeast, a delaminated lithospheric slab is observed under southeast Zagros, while the Arabian and Eurasian plates only partially underthrust East Zagros and Kopet Dagh, respectively.
