The climate fluctuations during the Late Pleistocene significantly influenced the phylogeographic structure and historical dynamics of marine fishes in the marginal seas of the western Pacific Ocean. The puffer fish, Lagocephalus spadiceus, holds substantial nutritional and economic value in the South China Sea. To investigate the demographic history and population structure of the L. spadiceus, the mitochondrial DNA COI and Cyt b gene datasets from 300 individuals across eight populations in the South China Sea were sequenced. Our findings revealed high haplotype diversity (0.874 ± 0.013) and low nucleotide diversity (0.00075 ± 0.00058). The phylogenetic tree and haplotype networks revealed no significant genetic differentiation along the northern coast of South China Sea. Neutrality tests, mismatch distribution analyses, and Bayesian skyline plots suggested that L. spadiceus underwent population expansion during the Late Pleistocene. Aim: Rare species make substantial contributions to coastal ecosystem functions. Functional rarity (FR) and phylogenetic rarity (PR) are important features for biodiversity conservation. This work aimed to discuss the necessity and reasonableness of conserving fish FR and PR in coastal seas. Location: China. Methods: By compiling historical fish investigation data, joint species distribution modelling (JSDM) was applied to model fish communities in coastal China Seas. Biogeographic patterns of FR and PR were explored, and the effectiveness of current MPA networks in terms of match/mismatch with the hotspots of rarity was assessed. Results: A total of 44 functionally rare species and 22 phylogenetically rare species were identified. Six of these species were both functionally and phylogenetically rare, and only one was listed as endangered on the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Functional rarity hotspots covered 10.27% of the coastal areas, which geographically converged in the southern and eastern coast of Taiwan, the Yangtze River Estuary and the Yellow River Estuary. Phylogenetic rarity hotspots only covered 3.06% of the coastal areas, which were sporadically distributed in the coastal East China Sea, the Bohai Sea and the northern Yellow Sea. Current marine‐protected areas (MPAs) only represented 16.16% of the FR hotspots and 20.48% of the PR hotspots, indicating substantial mismatched areas between the MPAs and the hotspots of FR and PR. Main Conclusions: Only considering threatened species in conservation practices will omit functionally and phylogenetically rare species because FR and PR are not necessarily correlated with species threat status on the IUCN Red List. Functional rarity hotspots do not necessarily overlap with PR hotspots, and current MPAs mismatch the majority of these areas. The transport behavior of ions in the nanopores has an important impact on the performance of the electrochemical devices. Although the classical Transmission‐Line (TL) model has long been used to describe ion transport in pores, the boundary conditions for the applicability of the TL model remain controversial. Here, we investigated the transport kinetics of different ions, within nanochannels of different lengths, by using transient single‐particle imaging with temporal resolution up to microseconds. We found that the ion transport kinetics within short nanochannels may deviate significantly from the TL model. The reason is that the ion transport under nanoconfinement is composed of multi basic stages, and the kinetics differ much under different stage domination. With the shortening of nanochannels, the electrical double layer (EDL) formation would become the "rate‐determining step" and dominate the apparent ion kinetics. Our results imply that using the TL model directly and treating the in‐pore mobility as an unchanged parameter to estimate the ion transport kinetics in short nanopores/nanochannels may lead to orders of magnitude bias. Construction of white‐light emitters is of great importance in practical applications but is challenging for metal nanoclusters. Herein, arginine (Arg)‐mediated copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) assemblies with white‐light emission (WLE) are reported for the first time. The multidentate ligand, Arg, not only effectively tailors the high stability and locally‐excited emission (LES) of aqueous phase Cu NCs, but also bridges 1‐naphthalenol methylcarbamate (NMC) to generate a blue emitter via through‐space interactions (TSIs), resulting in a stable mixed light. Density functional theory calculation and mass spectrum further confirm that Arg can allow for the formation of strong hydrogen‐bonds with the ligand 2,4‐diaminotoluene of Cu NCs, and formation of TSIs‐based complexes with NMC. More importantly, pure white‐light emission (WLE) with Commission Internationale de L'Eclairagecoordination (0.30, 0.31) is observed by regulating the ratio between Arg and the interfacial ligand of NMC. The findings not only provide a new perspective for the construction of WLE emitters via interface modification chemistry but also open a window to gain insight into the mechanism of interface engineering. In a large river with significant environmental variations in space (i.e., microhabitat) or over time (i.e., seasonality and/or long‐term trend), discovering the spatial changes in fish diversity, distributions, and functional traits would provide an important foundation for the understanding of ecosystem structure and function. In the Pearl River in China, three datasets as fish distribution, species functional traits, and environmental variables were constructed and sorted to (1) test the relationships between and congruence of taxonomic diversity, functional diversity, and phylogenetic diversity by a randomisation procedure, (2) map the spatial pattern of diversity and the correlation to environmental variables by maximal information coefficient, and (3) determine the fish traits tendency under environmental changes by the fourth‐corner method. The Pearl River possesses the highest fish richness among all the rivers in China, with 438 freshwater fish species including 119 cave species. At basin scale, phylogenetic diversity showed faster change than functional diversity, suggesting a little divergence of functional traits despite high phenotypic or genetic diversity across species, as parallel evolution. However, at a small scale, when only considering cave fishes, the variation rate of species traits was faster than that of species increase, as evolutionary radiation in a variety of microhabitats. For all three aspects of diversity, random permutation tests confirmed that congruence values in each grid cell were significantly different from the random expectations. Besides widely accepted variables such as altitude, precipitation, and slope concerned with fish biogeography, hydrochemical variables showed influential impacts on the morphological and growth traits of fishes in the Pearl River characterised by the dominance of the karst habitat. Cuproptosis is a new form of programmed cell death and exhibits enormous potential in cancer treatment. However, reducing the undesirable Cu ion release in normal tissue and maximizing the copper‐induced therapeutic effect in cancer sites are two main challenges. In this study, we constructed a photothermally triggered nanoplatform (Au@MSN‐Cu/PEG/DSF) to realize on‐demand delivery for synergistic therapy. The released disulfiram (DSF) chelated with Cu2+ in situ to generate highly cytotoxic bis(diethyldithiocarbamate)copper (CuET), causing cell apoptosis, and the formed Cu+ species promoted toxic mitochondrial protein aggregation, leading to cell cuproptosis. Synergistic with photothermal therapy, Au@MSN‐Cu/PEG/DSF could effectively kill tumor cells and inhibit tumor growth (inhibition rate up to 80.1 %). Aquaculture, especially of non‐native species and translocated domestic species, is a greatly encouraged way of relieving the conflicts between food and economic demand and resource depletion. We herein summarized the introduction history of non‐native fish for aquacultural use in China, including 105 species introduced from abroad and 61 species translocated domestically across river basins, which has brought great economic benefits but high ecological risks. Of these, one‐fourth have successfully established wild populations in natural waters and 15% have successfully invaded. We presented specific examples of seven aquaculture species/taxa and three aquarium species/taxa to explain their outcomes. The notable economic benefits, complex species composition and strain selection of tilapias, carps and sturgeons may together facilitate their invasion, and result in fish diversity decline, genetic pollution, and loss of ecosystem service. We specifically reviewed invasion cases in lakes and reservoirs and found that lakes in western China and reservoirs made by major hydroprojects are hotspots for non‐native species, and this has led to the disappearance of endemic species and changes to the original faunal composition. The escaped non‐native fish introduced via aquaculture has changed the original fish biogeography, resulting in the loss of assemblage uniqueness and causing faunal homogeneity. China has achieved significant progress in completing the Aichi Targets by improving the legal system and strengthening conservational actions on controlling non‐native species. Further actions, especially on risk assessment and management of non‐native species are expected for a healthy outlook for the aquaculture industry of China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rhinogobius candidianus is a freshwater goby distributed in north, northwest, west, and south Taiwan, but this species has been introduced to east Taiwan and became dominant. To investigate its native population genetic diversity and structure and evaluate the sources and diversity of translocated populations, the mitochondrial DNA control region and cytochrome b gene (1981 bp) from 220 specimens were analyzed. These results indicated that (1) the east populations originated from two sources in west Taiwan; (2) translocated populations exist in east Taiwan and south Taiwan; (3) many populations have likely been moved secondarily by human intervention; (4) the effective size of the populations had declined greatly; (5) within the native populations, the ancestral populations colonized Taiwan during the land bridge phase in the Pleistocene through north Taiwan; (6) the landform changes in Taiwan shaped the population structure; and (7) the landforms of the coastline during glaciation also shaped the native range. The low‐level genetic diversity, high population differentiation, and population decline greatly suggest the need for resource management and conservation interventions. Four clades (α–δ) should be managed as four distinct evolutionarily significant units, while the translocated populations should be managed as separate management units. Since the concept of surface plasmon amplification by stimulated emission of radiation (SPASER) was proposed in 2003, great progresses have been made on two kinds of plasmonic nanolasers, namely SPASER device and SPASER nanoparticle. In comparison, SPASER nanoparticle, with ultra‐narrow emission line, small size, and good biocompatibility, is a kind of promising luminescent nanoprobe and has a bright application prospect in biomedical imaging and sensing. Hence, it is gradually becoming an attractive research hotspot in the world. However, as the research on SPASER nanoparticle is still in its infancy, there are still lots of problems to be solved before it is widely applied. In this paper, the latest research advances of SPASER nanoparticles and their biological applications are reviewed. Single‐nanoparticle electrochemistry offers electrochemical behaviors of individual entities beyond the ensemble system. An electric double layer (EDL) exists on any charged particle–liquid interface because of counter‐ion accumulation, while direct measuring of the interfacial ion migration remains a challenge. Herein, a plasmonic‐based transient microscopic method, with a temporal resolution of 1–2 μs, was demonstrated to directly track the ion migration dynamics on single charged nanoparticles. We found that the dynamics of EDL formation might deviate significantly from the prediction made by using the classical resistance–capacitance (RC) model under nanoscale and transient conditions. Under ultrafast charging, due to the limit migration rate of ions in the solution, the actual time scale of the EDL formation could be up to 5 times slower than the predicted value from the RC model. We then proposed a new theoretical model to describe the transient dynamics of EDL formation. Comprehensive Summary: SPASER nanoparticle (NP), with small size, ultranarrow spectral‐line and good biocompatibility, is a potential biomedical nanoprobe. However, owning to the striking light absorption capacity of Au‐resonator, huge energy could accumulate under strong pumping‐laser, which would lead to poor photo‐stability and unexpected photo‐damage to SPASER NP, and is harmful to its future practical application but hasn't been systematically studied in experiment. In this paper, our experimental and theoretical researches revealed that the photo‐stability of SPASER NP is largely determined by its structure parameters: smaller Au‐core diameter, thicker silica‐shell will contribute to better photo‐stability. And the possibility and extent of photo‐damage of SPASER NP depend on not only its intrinsic stability but also the external pumping‐laser. Notably, the strong pumping condition for two‐level SPASER system could lead to heating‐melting‐evaporation or even phase‐explosion of SPASER NP, resulting in obvious photo‐damage, while, the weak pumping condition for three‐level SPASER system is quite friendly. This study provides reliable bases for the structural‐properties optimization of SPASER NPs, which is of great significance for its future application as a novel luminescence probe. Noble metal‐based surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has enabled the simple and efficient detection of trace‐amount molecules via significant electromagnetic enhancements at hot spots. However, the small Raman cross‐section of various analytes forces the use of a Raman reporter for specific surface functionalization, which is time‐consuming and limited to low‐molecular‐weight analytes. To tackle these issues, a hybrid SERS substrate utilizing Ag as plasmonic structures and GaN as charge transfer enhancement centers is presented. By the conformal printing of Ag nanowires onto GaN nanopillars, a highly sensitive SERS substrate with excellent uniformity can be fabricated. As a result, remarkable SERS performance with a substrate enhancement factor of 1.4 × 1011 at 10 fM for rhodamine 6G molecules with minimal spot variations can be realized. Furthermore, quantification and multiplexing capabilities without surface treatments are demonstrated by detecting harmful antibiotics in aqueous solutions. Mutated KRAS promotes the activation of the MAPK pathway and the progression of colorectal cancer (CRC) cells. Aberrant activation of the PI3K pathway strongly attenuates the efficacy of MAPK suppression in KRAS‐mutated CRC. The development of a novel strategy targeting a dual pathway is therefore highly essential for the therapy of KRAS‐mutated CRC. In this study, a quadruple‐depleting system for the KRAS, MEK1, PIK3CA, and MTOR genes based on CRISPR/SaCas9 was developed. Adenovirus serotype 5 (ADV5) was integrated with two engineered proteins, an adaptor and a protector, to form ADV‐protein complex (APC) for systemic delivery of the CRISPR system. Quadruple‐editing could significantly inhibit the MAPK and PI3K pathways in CRC cells with oncogenic mutations of KRAS and PIK3CA or with KRAS mutation and compensated PI3K activation. Compared with MEK and PI3K/MTOR inhibitors, quadruple‐editing induced more significant survival inhibition on primary CRC cells with oncogenic mutations of KRAS and PIK3CA. The adaptor specifically targeting EpCAM and the hexon‐shielding protector could dramatically enhance ADV5 infection efficiency to CRC cells and significantly reduce off‐targeting tropisms to many organs except the colon. Moreover, quadruple‐editing intravenously delivered by APC significantly blocked the dual pathway and tumor growth of KRAS‐mutated CRC cells, without influencing normal tissues in cell‐ and patient‐derived xenograft models. Therefore, APC‐delivered quadruple‐editing of the MAPK and PI3K pathways shows a promising therapeutic potential for KRAS‐mutated CRC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Freshwater biodiversity is currently under multiple threats. Conservation of freshwater fish biodiversity needs to be prioritized because natural conservation resources are always limited.Samples were collected at 24 sites in the Min River, the largest basin in southeastern China. Taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic diversity were analyzed. Biodiversity vulnerability was measured by removing one species each time out of the community with replacement.Results suggested that hotspots for taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity were located at two impounded sites, while for functional diversity were those sites with no upstream dams. Little congruence was observed between taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic diversity. Fragmentation of river network connectivity caused by dams was a significant factor affecting the biodiversity patterns. Beta turnover was the driving component for beta diversity, indicating that biodiversity dissimilarity along the river was mostly explained by environmental sorting. Fifteen out of 16 species that contributed the most to different facets of biodiversity were mostly endemic, either they had distinctive functional traits or they were the most prevalent species. Sites with the highest diversity vulnerability were characterized by these distinctive species. Functional diversity was more vulnerable to species loss comparing with the other two biodiversity facets.Prioritizing those biodiversity hotspots, sites with extreme functional vulnerability, and those distinctive endemic species which contributed the most to biodiversity vulnerability is suggested in the Min River. The study found evidence that congruence among different facets of biodiversity is hard to achieve, and functional diversity is the most vulnerable in a freshwater system fragmented by intensive dam constructions. A series of nonlinear optical (NLO) chalcohalides AXHg3P2S8 (A = Rb, Cs; X = Cl, Br), which contain various Hg‐based building units including mixed‐anion trigonal planar [HgS2X]3− and tetrahedral [HgS3X]5−, are successfully synthesized. These compounds display good water resistance, wide infrared transparent region (0.42–17 µm), high laser‐induced damage thresholds (4.5–6 × AgGaS2), and strong phase‐matchable second harmonic generation (SHG) response close to AgGaS2. The mixed‐anion chalcohalide groups serving as functional building units in NLO materials are studied for the first time and proven to be very effective. Objectives: Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are used to deliver drugs and therapeutic small molecule inhibitors to cancer cells. Evidence shows that AuNPs coated with nuclear localization sequence can cross the nuclear membrane and induce cellular apoptosis. To determine the therapeutic role of AuNPs, we compared two nanoconstructs conjugated to doxorubicin (DOX) through pH‐sensitive and pH‐resistant linkers. Materials and Methods: We tested DOX nanoconjugates' cytotoxicity, cellular and nuclear uptake in oral squamous cell carcinoma cell line. Furthermore, we evaluated the therapeutic effect of pH‐sensitive and pH‐resistant DOX bioconjugates in hamster buccal pouch carcinoma model. Results: Our data indicate that pH‐resistant and pH‐sensitive DOX‐nanoconjugates were equally localized in cancer cells, but the pH‐resistant DOX nanoparticles were more localized in the nuclei inducing a 2‐fold increase in the apoptotic effect compared with the pH‐sensitive DOX nanoparticles. Our in vivo results show significantly higher tumor shrinkage and survival rates in animals treated with DOX pH‐resistant AuNPs compared with pH‐sensitive ones. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that AuNPs enhance the cytotoxic effect against cancer cells in addition to acting as drug carriers. DOX pH‐resistant AuNPs enhanced accumulation of AuNPs in cancer cells' nuclei inducing a significant cellular apoptosis which was confirmed using in vitro and in vivo experiments without deleterious effects on blood cell count. The human brain magnetic resonance image (MRI) is always contaminated by noise and has uncertainty on the boundary between different tissues. These characteristics bring challenges to the human brain image segmentation. To handle these limitations, many variants of standard fuzzy c‐means (FCM) algorithm have been proposed. Some methods attempt to incorporate the local spatial information in the standard FCM algorithm. However, they can't solve the problem of data uncertainty very well. And some other methods can handle the problem of data uncertainty, but they are sensitive to noise since it doesn't incorporate any local spatial information. In this paper, we propose a noise robust intuitionistic fuzzy c‐means (NR‐IFCM) algorithm, which can handle noise and uncertainty problems simultaneously. In order to process the human brain MRI with noise better, we introduce a noise robust intuitionistic fuzzy set (NR‐IFS) which is noise robust in this NR‐IFCM algorithm. Meanwhile, in order to handle the data uncertainty, we also introduce a new intuitionistic fuzzy factor to this NR‐IFCM algorithm which combine the local gray‐level and the spatial information together. Circulating extracellular vesicles (EVs) were recognized as a promising source of diagnostic biomarker. However, there are limited studies published in this area, partly due to the limited number of detection platforms capable of detecting extracellular vesicles. In this study, extracellular vesicle immunoassays were developed using the Single Molecule array technology (SiMoa) and their clinical applications to cancer diagnosis were evaluated. Two extracellular vesicle detection assays, CD9-CD63 and Epcam-CD63, were designed to detect universal extracellular vesicles and tumour-derived extracellular vesicles, respectively. Our results show that CD9-CD63 and Epcam-CD63 SiMoa assays specifically detect extracellular vesicles but not free proteins with high sensitivities. The Epcam-CD63 levels detected in cancer cell culture media were consistent with levels of Epcam-expressing EVs isolated from the same cancer cell lines and detected by Western blot. Furthermore, the assays distinguish cancerous from non-cancerous plasma samples. The highest CD9-CD63 and Epcam-CD63 signals were observed in colorectal cancer patients comparing to healthy and benign controls. Both assays showed superior diagnostic performance for colorectal cancer. In addition, our results show that CD9-CD63 detection is an independent prognosis factor for both progression free survival and overall survival, while Epcam-CD63 detectionis an independent prognosis factor for OS. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) accounts for 90% of cases of liver cancer and is one of the most common and lethal malignancies among all cancers. Current screening practices in high‐risk populations using ultrasound and serological α‐fetoprotein (AFP) have significantly reduced HCC mortality. However, considering the highly operative‐dependent nature of ultrasound and dissatisfactory diagnostic performance of AFP, there is an unfulfilled need for a biomarker that can be used in HCC‐related at‐risk population screening. Here, sera from 322 patients, including 105 cases of chronic hepatitis (CH), 116 of liver cirrhosis (LC), and 101 of HCC, were collected. Two biomarkers, osteopontin (OPN) and dickkopf WNT signaling pathway inhibitor 1 (DKK1), were evaluated and compared with AFP alone and in combination. In our data, the serum OPN level increased significantly in HCC even in tumors of less than 2 cm. The area under the curve (AUC) reached 0.851, much higher than AFP and DKK1, with 79.21% sensitivity and 79.64% specificity at optimal cutoff in all of the samples. In AFP‐negative samples, serum OPN also performed well with an AUC of 0.838. The combination of AFP and OPN improved diagnosis performance significantly when compared with AFP alone. However, the DKK1 level showed an increase in HCC only compared with the LC group. The AUC does not improve significantly when added into the binary logistic model. We conclude that OPN, but not DKK1, is a promising biomarker for HCC diagnosis. Research Highlights: Serological OPN shows higher value in diagnosing hepatocellular carcinoma comparing with AFP and DKK1, with AUC at 0.851 in all of the 322 patients.In AFP negative samples, serum OPN also performs well with an AUC of 0.838.In tumor smaller than 2cm, OPN shows a significant increase, suggests its high clinical value in HCC screening and diagnosis. Identifying the spatial patterns of fish diversity in streams is basic for the conservation and management of stream fishes. The "upstream–downstream" patterns in the taxonomic α‐diversity of stream fishes have been widely surveyed. However, the longitudinal patterns in the functional diversity and β‐diversity of stream fishes have been given less attention. In this study, we surveyed fishes along an upstream–downstream gradient in a headwater stream of the Qiantang River, China, and examined the longitudinal variations in fish diversity. Our aims were to assess whether the longitudinal patterns in fish diversity were consistent between the taxonomic and functional metrics and between the α‐ and β‐aspects of diversity. We found that both species richness and functional richness of fishes showed a hump‐shaped relationship with the distance from headwaters, while both taxonomic and functional β‐diversities presented the U‐shaped distributions along the river continuum. Functional diversity related more to the distance from headwaters than taxonomic diversity. Despite their similar relationship with the distance from headwaters, taxonomic and functional β‐diversities were dominated by species turnover and function nestedness components, respectively. Our results suggest that, along the river continuum in a subtropical stream, the α‐ and β‐aspects of fish diversity present different longitudinal variations. Although the taxonomic and functional diversity shows similar relationships with distance from headwaters, their spatial variations are driven by different ecological processes. Anthropogenic disturbances may cause cosmopolitan species to replace endemic species, which will alter both the within‐community diversities and between‐community similarities of stream fish assemblages. In this study, we used data collected from headwater streams within the Xin'an basin, China, to evaluate the effects of low‐head dams on the alpha diversity and community similarity of fish assemblages. Our aims were to determine whether the changes in fish diversities and similarities related to dam‐associated disturbance are dependent on the species category (i.e., indigenous vs. native‐invasive species) or data type (i.e., occurrence‐based vs. abundance‐based indices). We found that low‐head dams significantly decreased the alpha diversity of the indigenous species in the impoundments but increased that of the native‐invasive species. However, the magnitude of this change was weakened if the two categories of fishes were not distinguished. Additionally, low‐head dams significantly decreased the occurrence‐based similarities of the indigenous fishes but increased those of the native‐invasive fishes. Despite the positive correlation between the occurrence‐based and abundance‐based indices, the former significantly overestimated the community similarities. Although most pairs of communities showed the same direction of changes for the two indices, some cases presented contrasting outcomes, including "perceived homogenization" (i.e., occurrence‐based differentiation but abundance‐based homogenization) and "perceived differentiation." Our results suggest the importance of distinguishing indigenous and native‐invasive species and considering both occurrence‐based and abundance‐based indices in future research on how anthropogenic activities affect fish diversities and similarities in streams. A large‐area (30 × 30 cm2) polymer film, embedded with green‐ and red‐emitting colloidal semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) to generate white light excited by blue light emitting diodes (LEDs), is fabricated. To prevent reabsorption and nonradiative energy transfer between QDs causing a significant redshift of the desired final color, the polymer film structure comprised of separated green and red emitting composite layers is explored. Feature selection and fusion is of crucial importance in multi‐feature visual tracking. This study proposes a multi‐task kernel‐based sparse learning method for multi‐feature visual tracking. The proposed sparse learning method can discriminate the reliable and unreliable features for optimal multi‐feature fusion through using a Fisher discrimination criterion‐based multi‐objective model to adaptively train the kernel weights of different features such as pixel intensity, edge and texture. To guarantee a robustness of the sparse representation method, a mixed norm is employed in the sparse leaning method to adaptively select correlated particle observations for multi‐task sparse reconstruction. Moving object detection plays a key role in video surveillance. A number of object detection methods have been proposed in the spatial domain. In this study, the authors propose a compressed sensing‐based algorithm for the detection of moving object. They first use a practical three‐dimensional circulant sampling method to yield sampled measurements. Then, they propose an object detection model to simultaneously reconstruct the foreground support, background and video sequence using the sampled measurements directly. Experimental results show that the proposed moving object detection algorithm outperforms the state‐of‐the‐art approaches and it is robust to the movement turbulence, camera motion and video noise. A 10-wk feeding trial was conducted to estimate the dietary protein requirements of juvenile Dianchi golden-line barbell, Sinocyclocheilus grahami (initial average weight 7.55 g). Five isocaloric diets were formulated to contain graded levels of protein (29, 34, 39, 44, and 49%). Each diet was fed to triplicate groups of fish in a recirculating rearing system maintained at 18-22 C. Feed intake of fish fed the diet with 39% protein was significantly higher than those fed the diet with 29, 34, and 49% protein ( P < 0.05). Weight gain, specific growth rate (SGR), and protein gain significantly increased with increasing dietary protein levels up to 39% ( P < 0.05), whereas no significant differences were observed among fish fed the diet with 39, 44, and 49% protein ( P > 0.05). In contrast, feed conversion ratio was significantly decreased with increasing dietary protein levels up to 39%. Maximum protein retention and protein efficiency ratio were observed in fish fed the diet with 39% protein. The regression analysis based on SGR and protein gain showed that the dietary protein requirements of juvenile S. grahami were 38.57% or 41.09% (equivalent to ca. 32.94% or 35.42% estimated digestible protein) of diet with a calculated digestible energy of 3.6 kcal/g. Freshwater fishes worldwide face an array of threats from dam construction, river fragmentation, pollution, over-exploitation and interactions with introduced species. Such impacts are especially prevalent in densely populated countries undergoing rapid development, and their effects are felt most strongly where regional fish diversity is high. We reviewed studies of the distribution of freshwater fish species throughout China to map a biogeographical pattern and ascertain the environmental factors contributing to this distribution. We then linked this information to identify geographic areas to be recommended as the focus of conservation efforts. A total of 920 species in 302 genera, 54 families and 21 orders were recorded. Among the recorded species, 73% were Cypriniformes and 12% were Siluriformes. Cyprinidae was the most dominant family with 473 species, followed by Balitoridae with 157 species. The administrative division of the biogeography of China's freshwater fishes consisted of nine regions, including the Qinghai- Tibetan Plateau Region, Oriental Region, Northwest Region, South Region, Loess Plateau Region, Heilongjiang Region, Upper Yangtze Region, 3 H Plain Region and Middle- Lower Yangtze Plain Region. The river system was the primary factor in determining China's freshwater fish biogeography. Under stepwise regression analysis, river discharge was found to be the most influential factor in determining richness, followed by population size and net primary productivity. The higher level of fish endemicity and sensitivity to environmental change led to the identification of Southwest China and the higher areas of Qinghai- Tibetan Plateau as the primary areas to be considered for fish conservation and potential natural reserves. To quantify more precisely and more reliably diffusion and reaction properties of biomolecules in living cells, a novel closed description in 3D of both the bleach and the post-bleach segment of fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) data acquired at a point, i.e., a diffraction-limited observation area, termed point FRAP, is presented. It covers a complete coupled reaction-diffusion scheme for mobile molecules undergoing transient or long-term immobilization because of binding. We assess and confirm the feasibility with numerical solutions of the differential equations. By applying this model to free EYFP expressed in HeLa cells using a customized confocal laser scanning microscope that integrates point FRAP and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS), the applicability is validated by comparison with results from FCS. We show that by taking diffusion during bleaching into consideration and/or by employing a global analysis of series of bleach times, the results can be improved significantly. As the point FRAP approach allows to obtain data with diffraction-limited positioning accuracy, diffusion and binding properties of the exon-exon junction complex (EJC) components REF2-II and Magoh are obtained at different localizations in the nucleus of MCF7 cells and refine our view on the position-dependent association of the EJC factors with a maturating mRNP complex. In this study, an efficient image fusion framework for multi‐focus images is proposed based on compressed sensing. The new fusion framework consists of three parts: image sampling, measurement fusion and image reconstruction. First, the dual‐channel pulse coupled neural network model is used in the image sampling part as an important weighting factor in the fusion scheme. Second, the result from the measurement fusion part is reconstructed through a new reconstruction algorithm called self‐adaptively modified Landwebber filter. Finally, computer simulation‐based experiment is conducted, showing that the novel fusion framework is capable of saving computational resource and enhancing the fusion result and is easy to implement. Five isocaloric diets were formulated to contain graded levels of protein (29, 34, 39, 44, and 49%). Each diet was fed to triplicate groups of fish in a recirculating rearing system maintained at 17-21 C. Feed intake of fish fed the 39 and 44% protein diets was significantly higher than that of fish fed the 29, 34, and 49% protein diets ( P < 0.05). Weight gain and protein gain significantly increased with increasing dietary protein level up to 39% ( P < 0.05), but no significant differences were observed among fish fed the 39, 44, and 49% protein diets ( P > 0.05). In contrast, feed conversion ratio decreased with increasing dietary protein level up to 39%. Protein retention efficiency or protein efficiency ratio generally increased with increasing dietary protein level up to 39%, and then the value gradually decreased thereafter. Broken-line regression analysis showed that the optimum dietary protein requirement for maximum weight gain of juvenile A. grahami under the experimental conditions was 38.6% (equivalent to ca. 33.0% estimated digestible protein). Fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between fluorescent proteins (FPs) is a powerful method to visualize and quantify protein-protein interaction in living cells. Unfortunately, the emission bleed-through of FPs limits the usage of this complex technique. To circumvent undesirable excitation of the acceptor fluorophore, using two-photon excitation, we searched for FRET pairs that show selective excitation of the donor but not of the acceptor fluorescent molecule. We found this property in the fluorescent cyan fluorescent protein (CFP)/yellow fluorescent protein (YFP) and YFP/mCherry FRET pairs and performed two-photon excited FRET spectral imaging to quantify protein interactions on the later pair that shows better spectral discrimination. Applying non-negative matrix factorization to unmix two-photon excited spectral imaging data, we were able to eliminate the donor bleed-through as well as the autofluorescence. As a result, we achieved FRET quantification by means of a single spectral acquisition, making the FRET approach not only easy and straightforward but also less prone to calculation artifacts. As an application of our approach, the intermolecular interaction of amyloid precursor protein and the adaptor protein Fe65 associated with Alzheimer's disease was quantified. The article describes the successful synthesis of antimicrobial silver nanoparticles (NPs) on the surface of silk fibers via y-ray irradiation. It says that silver particles with a diameter of less than 20 nanometers were produced and were well-dispersed on the surface of the silk fibers. It found the fibers to have excellent antimicrobial capabilities against the Staphylococcus aureaus bacterium even after several washing cycles, making them functional in fabrics for a range of applications.

Human gankyrin gene product (p28GANK) is a novel oncogenic protein ubiquitously overexpressed in hepatocellular carcinoma and also plays a role in cell cycle progression in normal hepatocytes and liver regeneration. However, little is known about the physiological role of p28GANK in the liver oval cell activation and proliferation. We investigated the possible involvement of p28GANK in oval cell-mediated liver regeneration and cell cycle progression. Methods: We examined the different p28GANK expression in 2-acetylaminofuorene/partial heptectomy (2-AAF/PH) rats, as a model of oval cell activation, and PH rats by Western blot and immunohistochemistry. Oval cells isolated from 2-AAF/PH rat model were cultured in our study. p28GANK expression was examined in the oval cells after mitogenic stimulation. Results: In 2-AAF/PH rats, p28GANK was expressed in the activated oval cells and located in the nucleus. p28GANK protein expression was increased in 2-AFF/PH rats after hepatectomy lasting for 96 h when retinoblastoma maintained hyperphosphorylation status at Ser-795. The isolated oval cells express AFP, OV6, CK19, CD34, CD45, c-kit and albumin. After epidermal growth factor stimulation, p28GANK protein was up-regulated in oval cells from 24 to 72 h, which coincided with increased expression of CyclinD1, CDK4 and decreased of Rb protein. Conclusions: p28GANK expression was increased in oval cell-mediated liver regeneration and oval cells after mitogenic stimulation. Commercial infrared (IR) nonlinear optical (NLO) materials are mainly from chalcopyrite‐type AMQ2 (A = Ag, Zn, M = Ga, Ge, Q = S, Se, P) crystals such as AgGaS2 (AGS), AgGaSe2 (AGSe), and ZnGeP2 (ZGP), in which the basic NLO‐active groups are MQ4 tetrahedral units. However, the small anisotropic character of them critical for small birefringence hinders the practical applications in the available IR wavelength range. In this study, a novel strategy for modulating birefringence is proposed using a cation regulation‐driven compressed hypertetrahedral layer approach and a family of AAg2MS4 (A = Na, K, Rb; M = P, As) IR NLO crystals are successfully obtained. Remarkably, the title compounds increase the birefringence to 0.12–0.15, about three times larger than that of AGS (0.04), while they can maintain large bandgaps and strong NLO effects. In addition, they exhibit congruent‐melting properties, beneficial for bulk single crystal growth. The work offers a firsthand access for designing and fabricating high‐performance IR NLO materials.
