The structural complexity of oyster reef canopy plays a major role in promoting biodiversity, balancing the sediment budget, and modulating hydrodynamics in estuarine systems. Although oyster canopy structure is both spatially and temporally heterogeneous, oyster canopies are generally characterized using simple first‐order quantities, like oyster density, which may lack the ability to sufficiently parameterize reef roughness. In this study, a novel laser‐scan approach was used to map the surface of intact reference and restored reefs (restoration age: 1–4 years) during low tide, when the oyster canopy was fully exposed. Measurements were used to estimate hydrodynamically relevant roughness characteristics over the entire reef surface (>140 m2; 0.50 m resolution), providing estimates of the canopy height (hc), standard deviation (σc), rugosity index (R), and fractal dimension (D). Average canopy heights ranged from 3.6 to 4.9 cm, with canopy height standard deviations between 1.4 and 2.0 cm. Mean rugosity indices and fractal dimensions were relatively low on the youngest (1 year) restored reef (R = 1.28; D = 2.67), with substantial increases observed for more mature reef canopies (4 years: R = 1.56; D = 2.71). Structural complexity was consistently greater on reef margins than in reef interiors. Increases in complexity were linked to restoration age, with older reefs exhibiting more complex oyster canopies. The highest fractal dimension was observed on the intact reference reef, highlighting the importance of sustained reef growth for maintaining higher‐order structural complexity. Results provide spatially explicit surface roughness characterizations for healthy, intertidal oyster reefs, with applications in both restoration science and natural and nature‐based feature design. One of the paramount goals of oyster reef living shorelines is to achieve sustained and adaptive coastal protection, which requires meeting ecological (i.e., develop a self‐sustaining oyster population) and engineering (i.e., provide coastal defense) targets. In a large‐scale comparison along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the United States, the efficacy of various designs of oyster reef living shorelines at providing wave attenuation was evaluated accounting for the ecological limitations of oysters with regard to inundation duration. A critical threshold for intertidal oyster reef establishment is 50% inundation duration. Living shorelines that spent less than one‐half of the time (<50%) inundated were not considered suitable habitat for oysters, however, were effective at wave attenuation (68% reduction in wave height). Reefs that experienced >50% inundation were considered suitable habitat for oysters, but wave attenuation was similar to controls (no reef; ~5% reduction in wave height). Many of the oyster reef living shoreline approaches therefore failed to optimize the ecological and engineering goals. In both inundation regimes, wave transmission decreased with an increasing freeboard (difference between reef crest elevation and water level), supporting its importance in the wave attenuation capacity of oyster reef living shorelines. However, given that the reef crest elevation (and thus freeboard) should be determined by the inundation duration requirements of oysters, research needs to be refocused on understanding the implications of other reef parameters (e.g., width) for optimizing wave attenuation. A broader understanding of the reef characteristics and seascape contexts that result in effective coastal defense by oyster reefs is needed to inform appropriate design and implementation of oyster‐based living shorelines globally. Oyster reef living shorelines have been proposed as an effective alternative to traditional coastal defence structures (e.g. bulkheads, breakwaters), with the benefit that they may keep pace with sea‐level rise and provide co‐benefits, such as habitat provision. However, there remains uncertainty about the effectiveness of shoreline protection provided by oyster reefs, which limits their broader application.We draw evidence from studies along the east and gulf coasts of the United States, where much research and implementation of oyster reef restoration has occurred, to better define the existing gaps in our understanding of the use of restored oyster reefs for shoreline protection.We find potential disconnects between ecological and engineering functions of reefs. In response, we outline how engineering and ecological principles are used in the design of oyster reef living shorelines and highlight knowledge gaps where an integration of these disciplines will lead to their more effective application.Synthesis and applications. Hydrologic changes caused by diversion hydropower are poorly described. Herein, we evaluate hydrologic alteration in 32 ungauged rivers developed for diversion hydropower. We simulated long-term unregulated discharge records before perturbing flows with the hydropower diversion and comparing periods with and without diversion. We detected statistically significant changes to flow regime metrics across all rivers. Magnitudes across a range of flows consistently decreased following diversion, flow variability decreased substantially, and transitions between flows of different magnitudes became more abrupt. Magnitudes of 7-day minimum flows were lower by a mean of 41 ± 23% ( p < .05 for 19 rivers), annual maximum flows decreased significantly ( p < .05) in 22 rivers, and 7-day maximum flows decreased by a mean of 52 ± 18% ( p < .05 for 26 rivers). Temporally dynamic low to moderate flows were replaced by static minimal flows, leading to a mean 184 ± 49% increase in flow constancy. Mean duration of events sustained below the prediversion Q75 increased ( p < .05 for 32 rivers) from a mean of 3 days to a mean of 27 days after diversion. Mean hydrograph rise and fall rates doubled and tripled, respectively ( p < .05 for 28 rivers). We detected few changes to peak flow timing. Although direction of observed change was consistent among the rivers, magnitudes and significance of response often varied between rivers. A proposed diversion index largely explained response variability among the 32 rivers. [1] Support for low-carbon energy and opposition to new large dams encourages global development of small hydropower facilities. This support is manifested in national and international energy and development policies designed to incentivize growth in the small hydropower sector while curtailing large dam construction. However, the preference of small to large dams assumes, without justification, that small hydropower dams entail fewer and less severe environmental and social externalities than large hydropower dams. With the objective to evaluate the validity of this assumption, we investigate cumulative biophysical effects of small (<50 MW) and large hydropower dams in China's Nu River basin, and compare effects normalized per megawatt of power produced. Results reveal that biophysical impacts of small hydropower may exceed those of large hydropower, particularly with regard to habitat and hydrologic change. These results indicate that more comprehensive standards for impact assessment and governance of small hydropower projects may be necessary to encourage low-impact energy development. Flood risk assessments often overlook benefits of floodplain use and the influence of coping capacity. Herein we present a classic flood risk analysis, but simultaneously evaluate benefits of flood‐prone land use in Candaba, Philippines. By combining simulated flood probabilities with both damage and benefit functions, we estimate agricultural damages and livelihood benefits over flood hazards of varying frequency. We find that concurrent evaluation of both damages and benefits provides more complete information on which flood risk reduction decisions may be based. In Candaba, although "risky" uses of flood‐prone land are associated with rice‐crop damages, livelihood benefits exceed risks by a large margin (US $58 million) across the range of investigated flood hazards. Even considering risk, net benefits of direct human floodplain use far exceed benefits provided when direct "risky" human uses are excluded (difference of $85–87 million). We also find that individual coping strategies (adapting crop cycles to the flood pulse or shifting from farming to seasonal fishing) may minimise flood losses while supporting livelihood benefits (net benefit of $125 million). Risk‐benefit analysis can support floodplain management by elucidating practices that yield maximum socio‐ecological benefits for the minimum flood risk. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
