Photodynamic therapy shows promise for glioma treatment with powerful efficacy and low resistance, however, its effectiveness is significantly lowered by inadequate light delivery through the skull. Herein, a needle‐type implantable microLED device and cathepsin B‐responsive prodrug nanoparticles (PNPs) are newly exploited for glioma's chemo‐photodynamic combination therapy. The microLED containing four small LEDs on the tip of its guide needle can be implanted into the center of glioma tissues without large area opening of skull, uniformly irradiating light to deep glioma tissues. PNPs are formulated via self‐assembly of heterobifunctional prodrug composed of doxorubicin, verteporfin, and cathepsin B‐cleavable peptide linker, wherein they stably maintain inactive nanoparticle structures in normal physiological conditions and specifically deliver therapeutic age to cathepsin B‐overexpressed glioma tissues. In vitro cellular assays, PNPs irradiated with showed the synergistic cytotoxicity of DOX and VFP only in cathepsin B‐overexpressed cancer cells rather than normal cells. In tumor‐bearing mice, PNPs showed high tumor accumulation via the nanoparticle‐driven enhanced permeation and retention (EPR) effect and they also exhibited remarkable therapeutic efficacy against glioma under microLED‐mediated light irradiation via chemo‐photodynamic combination therapy. Accordingly, applying microLED with PNPs is an outstanding strategy to defeat glioma with cooperative chemo‐photodynamic effects, minimal invasiveness, and desirable systemic/local safety. Background and Aim: Although age at disease onset is considered to be a significant factor in the prognosis of Crohn's disease, little is known about its influence on the long‐term prognosis of those with intestinal Behçet's disease (BD). This study aimed to evaluate the long‐term clinical outcomes of patients with intestinal BD according to age of disease onset. Methods: Patients diagnosed with intestinal BD at < 18, 18–60, and > 60 years of age were classified into early‐onset, adult‐onset, and late‐onset groups, respectively. The influence of disease onset time on clinical prognosis, including specific medical requirements, BD‐related intestinal surgery, hospitalization, and emergency room visits, was compared using the log–rank test in a large cohort of patients with intestinal BD. Results: Among 780 patients, 21 (2.7%), 672 (86.2%), and 87 (11.1%) comprised the early‐onset, adult‐onset, and late‐onset groups, respectively. Patients in the early‐onset group were more likely to require immunosuppressants than those in the adult‐onset group (P = 0.048). Nine (42.9%), 158 (23.5%), and 18 (20.7%) patients in the early‐onset, adult‐onset, and late‐onset groups, respectively, underwent intestinal resection. The early‐onset group exhibited a higher risk for intestinal resection than the late‐onset (P = 0.043) and adult‐onset (P = 0.030) groups. The late‐onset group exhibited a higher risk for BD‐related hospitalization than the adult‐onset group (P = 0.023). Conclusions: Age at diagnosis affected the clinical course of intestinal BD, including intestinal surgery, hospitalization, and specific medical requirements. Background and Aim: Bifidobacterium breve was the first bacteria isolated in the feces of healthy infants and is a dominant species in the guts of breast‐fed infants. Some strains of B. breve have been shown to be effective at relieving intestinal inflammation, but the modes of action have yet to be elucidated. In this study, we investigated the mechanisms of action of B. breve CBT BR3 isolated from South Korean infant feces in relieving colitis in vitro and in vivo. Methods: Colitis was induced in mice with dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) and dinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (DNBS). Quantitative reverse‐transcription polymerase chain reaction, in vitro FITC‐dextran flux permeability assay, and aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) luciferase assay are performed using Caco‐2 cells and HT29‐Lucia™ AhR cells. Results: B. breve CBT BR3 was orally administered. B. breve CBT BR3 improved colitis symptoms in both DSS‐ and DNBS‐induced colitis models. B. breve CBT BR3 increased the number of goblet cells per crypt. B. breve increased the mRNA expressions of Notch, Spdef, Muc5, and Il22. The mRNA expressions of Occludin, which encodes a membrane tight‐junction protein, and Foxo3, which encodes a protein related to butyrate metabolism, were also increased in the DSS‐ and DNBS‐induced colitis models. B. breve CBT BR3 protected inflammation‐induced epithelial cell permeability and improved goblet cell function by inducing aryl hydrocarbon receptor in vitro. Conductive textiles are promising for human–machine interfaces and wearable electronics. A simple way to create conductive textiles by coating fabric with liquid metal (LM) particles is reported. The coating process involves dip‐coating the fabric into a suspension of LM particles at room temperature. Despite being coated uniformly after drying, the textiles remain electrically insulating due to the native oxide that forms on the LM particles. Yet, they can be rendered conductive by compressing the textile to rupture the oxide and thereby percolate the particles. Thus, compressing the textile with a patterned mold can pattern conductive circuits on the textile. The electrical conductivity of these circuits increases by coating more particles on the textile. Notably, the conductive patterns autonomously heal when cut by forming new conductive paths along the edge of the cut. The textiles prove to be useful as circuit interconnects, Joule heaters, and flexible electrodes to measure ECG signals. Further, the LM‐coated textiles provide antimicrobial protection against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. Such simple coatings provide a route to convert otherwise insulating textiles into electrical circuits with the ability to autonomously heal and provide antimicrobial properties. Kirigami, a traditional paper‐cutting art, is a promising method for creating mechanically robust circuitry for unconventional devices capable of extreme stretchability through structural deformation. In this study, this design approach is expanded upon by introducing Liquid Metal based Elastic Kirigami Electrodes (LM‐eKE) in which kirigami‐patterned soft elastomers are coated with eutectic gallium‐indium (EGaIn) alloy. Overcoming the mechanical and electrical limitations of previous efforts with paper‐like kirigami, the all soft LM‐eKE can be stretched to 820% strain while the electrical resistance only increases by 33%. This is enabled by the fluidic properties of the EGaIn coating, which maintains high electrical conductivity even as the elastic substrate undergoes extreme deformation. Applying the LM‐eKE to human knee joints and fingers, the resistance change during physical activities is under 1.7%, thereby allowing for stable electrical operation of wearable health monitoring devices for tracking electroencephalogram (EEG) signals and other physiological activity. Urokinase‐type plasminogen activator receptor (uPAR) is a glycolipid‐anchored protein located on the cell surface that is implicated in the promotion of metastasis. New fluorescent probes for the detection of uPAR expression that feature a rapid "turn‐on" response are reported here. They consist of a donor‐π‐acceptor‐based fluorophore conjugated with a uPAR‐binding AE105 peptide. The resulting AE105‐coupled uPAR‐targeting probes are weakly emissive in aqueous buffer solutions; however, a fluorescence "turn‐on" signal is instantly triggered upon specific binding to uPAR (KD=63.2 nM for P1 and 49.5 nM for P2), which restricts the rotational deactivation of the fluorophore. Background and Aim: We aimed to identify the long‐term clinical outcomes of and prognostic factors for intestinal Behçet's disease (BD). Methods: A cohort of 780 patients with intestinal BD between 1997 and 2021 was investigated to determine long‐term clinical outcomes and prognostic factors at an inflammatory bowel disease clinic at Severance Hospital, Seoul, Korea. Results: During the median follow‐up period of 12.7 ± 7.2 years, 5‐aminosalicylic acids, corticosteroids, immunomodulators, and anti‐tumor necrosis factor‐alpha (TNF‐α) agents were required in 94.9%, 67.2%, 43.8%, and 14.6% of the patients, respectively. The cumulative rates of anti‐TNF‐α use were 3.7%, 7.5%, 8.5%, 12.1%, 17.6%, and 24.0%, and those for abdominal surgery were 5.7%, 10.9%, 12.6%, 16.5%, 21.6%, and 28.3%, at 1, 3, 5, 10, 20, and 30 years, respectively, after initial diagnosis of intestinal BD. The cumulative rates of hospitalization were 11.8%, 21.9%, 27.9%, 38.8%, 54.4%, and 74.8%, and those of emergency room visits were 10.0%, 19.8%, 22.7%, 31.6%, 50.0%, and 65.0% at 1, 3, 5, 10, 20, and 30 years. Older age at primary diagnosis, previous appendectomy history, higher disease activity index for intestinal Behçet's disease score, systemic BD, multiple intestinal ulcers, deep intestinal ulcers, higher C‐reactive protein, lower hemoglobin, and lower albumin levels were associated with poor prognosis. Married status, higher body mass index, oral ulceration, and arthritis were negatively associated with poor prognosis. Conclusions: Data on the long‐term clinical outcomes of intestinal BD and their prognostic factors could guide physicians in patient monitoring and in optimizing individualized treatment. The miniaturization and flexibility of wearable and implantable devices allow humans to carry them directly on or in their bodies, thus enabling these devices to measure biometric signals in real‐time anywhere. However, as they are embedded or implanted into an actively moving human interface, motion artifact noise inevitably occurs. Typically, devices are laminated or implanted on body surfaces, but the positions of such devices cannot be designed without any discussion of the noise. Thus, this paper investigates an approach that minimizes the noise to achieve negligible motion artifacts in implantable micro‐devices that have a specific angle on the surface of the body, while maintaining the function of sensor. The device with a specific angle successfully detects the target signal, while motion artifacts—such as tension, compression, and bending—disturb the measurement. The pulse signal on a wrist is well measured while the hand is rotating, and artificial skin implanted on a rat can distinguish external pressure from the movement noise. A thermometer sensor that follows the same rule is further examined. Therefore, this approach is expected to be useful in numerous areas including human interface‐based medical devices, virtual reality, and health aids to improve quality of life. Soft devices that sense touch are important for prosthetics, soft robotics, and electronic skins. One way to sense touch is to use a capacitor consisting of a soft dielectric layer sandwiched between two electrodes. Compressing the capacitor brings the electrodes closer together and thereby increases capacitance. Ideally, sensors of touch should have both large sensitivity and the ability to measure a wide range of stress (dynamic range). Although skin has such capabilities, it remains difficult to achieve both sensitivity and dynamic range in a single manmade sensor. Inspired by skin, this work reports a soft capacitive pressure sensor based on a bilayer of liquid metal elastomer foam (B‐LMEF). The B‐LMEF consists of an elastomer slab (elastic modulus: ≈655 kPa) laminated with a soft liquid metal elastomer foam (LMEF, elastic modulus: ≈7 kPa). The LMEF deforms at small stresses (<10 kPa), and both layers deform at large stresses (>10 kPa). The B‐LMEF has high sensitivity (0.073 kPa–1) at small stress and can operate over a large range of stress (200 kPa), which leads to a large dynamic range (≈4.1 × 105). Ion‐conducting polymers such as hydrogels have soft, flexible, and stretchable properties that enable humans to intimately interact with other living things. They are important components of cells, tissue, and organs of the human being. Interestingly, these polymers possess sufficient mobile ions that are more sensitive to external stimuli of tactility, temperature, biological molecules, and electrical polarization than conventional solid‐state materials such as metals and oxides. The objective of this review is to summarize recent advances in such unconventional electronics using soft ion‐conducting polymers in various types of sensors and electronic components for signal processing, stimulation, and display devices for integrated systems. Differences in properties (such as soft and elastic properties, formation of electrical double layer, and direct doping/dedoping of active layer) between ion‐conducting polymer‐based electronic devices and conventional electronics are discussed, considering essential conditions for their biomedical applications, including decreased driving voltage due to mobility of ions, high stability and sensitivity in a biological environment, and biocompatible and biodegradable characteristics. Each part of an integrated system is successfully demonstrated using novel materials and geometries with advanced fabrications and low‐voltage operation for diverse bio‐interfaces. The ancient art of Origami started to evolve as a contemporary technological method for the realization of morphologically induced and unconventional advanced functional structures. Here, directional random lasers (RLs) that are formed by folding (i.e., ori) dye‐doped natural protein silk fibroin (SF) film as paper (i.e., kami) are demonstrated. The folding stress induces parallel nanocracks that simultaneously function as diffuse reflectors and laser light outcouplers at the boundaries of the optical gain medium. Random lasing is observed after a threshold energy level of 0.8 nJ µm−2 with an in‐plane divergence‐angle of 13°. Moreover, the central laser emission wavelength is tuned from 588.7 to 602.1 nm by controlling the adjacent nanocracks distance and additional laser emission directions are introduced by further folding SF at different in‐plane angles that induce rectangular and triangular geometries. More significantly, RL is fabricated via a quick, scalable, and environmentally friendly stress‐induced nanocracking process maintaining its mechanical and optical properties even after 10,000 times of bending test. meso‐Carboxyl‐BODIPY responds to small electronic changes resulting from acyl substitution reactions with a marked change in fluorescence. Herein, the minute changes that accompany the thioester to amide conversion encountered in native chemical ligation (NCL) are exploited in the construction of fluorescent "turn‐on" probes. Two fluorogenic probes, 1 a and 4, derived from a meso‐thioester‐BODIPY scaffold, were designed for the selective detection of cysteine (1 a) and aminopeptidase N (4), respectively. The aromatic (1 a) and aliphatic (4) thioesters of meso‐carboxyl‐BODIPY are nonfluorescent. However, specific analyte‐induced conversion to the meso‐amide derivative caused significant spectral changes and a dramatic fluorescence enhancement. Probe 1 a exhibited a large fluorescence "turn‐on" response with high selectivity toward cysteine via a tandem NCL reaction. Background: This experimental study aims to evaluate the effect of hyaluronic acid on healing of infected extraction sockets compared with recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2).Methods: Both third and fourth mandibular premolars of six beagle dogs were hemisected, and the distal roots were extracted at baseline. Subsequently, combined endodontic-periodontic lesions were induced at the remaining mesial roots. After 4 months, the mesial roots on both sides of the mandible were removed. Four sockets per dog were randomly allocated to four groups: Group 1, Control; Group 2, only absorbable collagen sponge (ACS: carrier); Group 3, 1% hyaluronic acid (HA) gel + ACS; and Group 4, rhBMP-2 + ACS. After 3 months of healing, the dogs were euthanized for microcomputed tomography and histologic analysis.Results: After the lesion induction period (4 months), communication between the periodontal lesion and endodontic periapical lesion was observed at all remaining mesial roots. Alveolar bone overgrowth was observed in groups 3 and 4, but bone volume density was not significantly different among all groups. At the crestal portion, mineralization, and osteocalcin expression were higher in groups 3 and 4 than in groups 1 and 2.Conclusion: Treatment with HA can promote bone formation and improve the wound healing rate comparable to rhBMP-2 in infected extraction sockets. Squaraine dyes (SQs) are an important class of polymethine dyes with a unique reasonable‐stabilized zwitterionic structure, in which electrons are highly delocalized over the conjugated bridge. These dyes can not only be easily synthesized via a condensation, but also exhibit intense absorption and emission in the visible and near‐infrared region with excellent photochemical stability, making them attractive material candidates for many photoelectric and biomedical applications. Thus, in this review, after an introduction of SQs, the recent advances of SQs in the photovoltaic field are comprehensively summarized including dye‐sensitized solar cells, organic solar cells, and perovskite solar cells. Then, the important advances in the use of SQs as the biosensors, biological imaging, and photodynamic/photothermal therapy reagents in the biomedical field are also discussed. This review focuses on surface modifications to gallium‐based liquid metals (LMs), which are stretchable conductors with metallic conductivity and nearly unlimited extensibility due to their liquid nature. Despite the enormous surface tension of LM, it can be patterned into nonspherical shapes, such as wires, due to the presence of a native oxide shell. Incorporating inherently soft LM into elastomeric devices offers comfort, mechanical compliance, and stretchability. The thin oxide layer also enables the formation of stable liquid colloids and LM micro/nanosized droplets that do not coalesce easily. The oxide layer can also be exfoliated and chemically modified into semiconductor 2D materials to create and deposit atomically thin materials at room temperature. Thus, the interface and its manipulation are important. This review summarizes physical and chemical methods of modifying the surface of LM to tune its properties. Solar‐thermal materials have been intensively studied in the context of production and localization of thermal energy, targeting an industry level application. Although photonic and optical strategies for enhancing light absorption have increased the efficiency of photo excitation/conversion into thermal energy, most of them have several limitations such as large area fabrication, thermal stability and broadband/omnidirectional light absorption. In this study, a gold‐coated hierarchical nanoturf membrane (Au/h‐Nanoturf membrane) incorporated with randomly distributed high aspect ratio (AR) nanostructures and micro‐through holes is proposed. The Au/h‐Nanoturf has peculiar black structures that provide advantages in forming a membrane with a large area and in absorbing broadband solar light spectrum. Furthermore, the membrane is combined with micro‐cone array which makes it exhibit exceptionally omnidirectional light absorption properties. Using computational analysis, it is confirmed that the micro‐cone array substantially contributes to the omnidirectional solar absorption irrespective of the wavelength. The optimized structural parameters for the maximum efficiency of the solar‐thermal materials are also found. The prepared solar‐vapor generator with the optimized structural features exhibits 91% average conversion efficiency under one sun condition. The efficiency is sustainable for up to four weeks. Biocompatible, biodegradable, and solid‐state electrolyte‐based organic transistors are demonstrated. As the electrolyte is composed of all edible materials, which are levan polysaccharide and choline‐based ionic liquid, the organic transistor fabricated on the electrolyte can be biocompatible and biodegrable. Compared to the other ion gel based electrolytes, it has superior electrical and mechanical properties, large specific capacitance (≈40 µF cm−2), non‐volatility, flexibility, and high transparency. Thus, it shows mechanical reliability by maintaining electrical performances under up to 1.11% of effective bending strain, 5% of stretching, and have low operation voltage range when it is utilized in organic transistors. Moreover, the biodegradable electrolyte‐based organic transistors can be applied to bio‐integrated devices, such as electrocardiogram (ECG) recordings on human skin and the heart of a rat. The measured ECG signals from the transistors, compared to signals from electrode‐based sensors, has a superior signal‐to‐noise ratio. Optically tunable bifunctional structures are created by hybrid imprint‐photo lithography (HIPL), which is a combination of photolithography and soft lithography via a structured photomask. Prismatic patterns are formed on a flexible photomask, and the structured photomask is exploited as an imprint mold to create two‐layered microstructures that show a tunable refraction property. Fabricated microstructures, such as the perpendicularly aligned cross‐prismatic island (PAC‐PI), show optically dual functionality that originates from each optical property of the upper and lower layers in two‐layered structures with symmetric light collimation in the vertical and horizontal axes along both directions of the upper and lower prismatic layers, whereas a single conventional prismatic film shows only one‐axis collimation. Moreover, tunability of the light collimation, which can be modulated by varying the area ratio of the upper and lower layers from 80% to 20% using optical simulation, is demonstrated. Such optically tunable bifunction on a single sheet could potentially reduce the number of required optical sheets, such as the liquid crystal display backlight unit (LCD BLU). This new hybrid lithography process could provide a potential pathway to construct highly complex optical components, such as planar waveguide, microlight emitting diode, virtual reality/augmented reality, and holographic display devices. Fluorinated intermediate molecular weight polyethylenimine (FP2ks) with various fluorination degrees was synthesized by conjugation with heptafluorobutyric anhydride and the fluorination effect for gene delivery systems was examined. FP2ks could condense pDNA, forming compact, positively charged, and nano‐sized spherical particles. It was thought that their decreased electrostatic interaction with pDNA would be compensated by hydrophobic interaction. The cytotoxicity of FP2ks was increased with the increase of fluorination degree, probably due to the cellular membrane disruption via hydrophobic interaction with FP2ks. The transfection efficiency of highly fluorinated FP2ks was not severely affected in serum condition, assuming their good serum‐compatibility. Discrepancy between their higher cellular uptake efficiency and lower transfection efficiency than PEI25k was thought to arise from the formation of compact polyplexes followed by the decreased dissociation of pDNA. Background: There have been previous studies on the relationship between periodontitis and peri-implantitis, but limited information is available on how periodontitis affects osseointegration and wound healing of newly placed dental implants adjacent to natural teeth. The objective of the present experiment is to evaluate healing around dental implants adjacent to teeth with untreated experimental periodontitis.Methods: The study included six male beagle dogs. Scaling and plaque control procedures were performed on three dogs (control group). In the other three dogs (experimental group), retraction cords and ligature wires were placed subgingivally around all premolars and the first molars. Induced experimental periodontitis was confirmed after 3 months. Each control or experimental group was divided into two subgroups depending on the timing of implant placement (immediate/delayed). Twelve dental implants (two implants for each dog) were placed immediately, and the other 12 dental implants (two implants for each dog) were placed 2 months after extraction. The animals were sacrificed 2 months after implant placement. Histologic and histometric analyses were performed.Results: Four implants (three from the immediate placement group and one from the delayed placement group) failed in the experimental group. There were significant differences in the percentage of bone-to-implant contact and marginal bone volume density between the control and experimental groups. Both parameters were significantly lower in the experimental group than in the control group (P <0.05). There was a tendency toward more marginal bone loss in the experimental group than the control group.Conclusions: Immediate placement of implants is associated with a higher failure rate compared with delayed placement. Background: Pain from local anesthetic injection makes patients anxious when visiting a dental clinic. This study aims to determine differences in pain according to types of local anesthetizing methods and to identify the possible contributing factors (e.g., dental anxiety, stress, and sex).Methods: Thirty-one patients who underwent open-flap debridement in maxillary premolar and molar areas during treatment for chronic periodontitis were evaluated for this study. A randomized, split-mouth, single-masked clinical trial was implemented. The dental anxiety scale (DAS) and perceived stress scale (PSS) were administered before surgery. Two lidocaine ampules for each patient were used for local infiltration anesthesia (supraperiosteal injection). Injection pain was measured immediately after local infiltration anesthesia using the visual analog pain scale (VAS) questionnaire. Results from the questionnaire were used to assess degree of pain patients feel when a conventional local anesthetic technique (CNV) is used compared with a computer-controlled anesthetic delivery system (CNR).Results: DAS and PSS did not correlate to injection pain. VAS scores were lower for CNR than for CNV regardless of the order in which anesthetic procedures were applied. VAS score did not differ significantly with sex. Pearson coefficient for correlation between VAS scores for the two procedures was 0.80, also indicating a strong correlation.Conclusion: Within the limitations of the present study, relief from injection pain is observed using CNR. Abstract: This study presents a wet‐responsive and biocompatible smart hydrogel adhesive that exhibits switchable and controllable adhesions on demand for the simple and efficient transfer printing of nanomembranes. The prepared hydrogel adhesives show adhesion strength as high as ≈191 kPa with the aid of nano‐ or microstructure arrays on the surface in the dry state. When in contact with water, the nano/microscopic and macroscopic shape reconfigurations of the hydrogel adhesive occur, which turns off the adhesion (≈0.30 kPa) with an extremely high adhesion switching ratio (>640). The superior adhesion behaviors of the hydrogels are maintained over repeating cycles of hydration and dehydration, indicating their ability to be used repeatedly. The adhesives are made of a biocompatible hydrogel and their adhesion on/off can be controlled with water, making the adhesives compatible with various materials and surfaces, including biological substrates. Based on these smart adhesion capabilities, diverse metallic and semiconducting nanomembranes can be transferred from donor substrates to either rigid or flexible surfaces including biological tissues in a reproducible and robust fashion. Transfer printing of a nanoscale crack sensor onto a bovine eye further demonstrates the potential of the reconfigurable hydrogel adhesive for use as a stimuli‐responsive, smart, and versatile functional adhesive for nanotransfer printing. Abstract: This study was conducted to assess the effects of fermented total mixed ration (FTMR) on the growth performance, carcass and meat quality traits of Hanwoo steers. The present study evidenced that the FTMR had a strong effect on dry matter intake, body weight, daily gain, slaughter weight and carcass characteristics compared with control animals. The results showed that the dry matter intake (7.17 ± 0.13 kg), average body weight (615.20 ± 112.82 kg), and daily gain (0.56 ± 0.16 kg) were greater in animals receiving FTMR than in control animals (P < 0.05). The meat quality characteristics indicated that cooking loss and the pH values did not vary between control and FTMR treated animals; however, animals in the treated groups (FTMR) had higher meat quality grades, carcass weight (396.13 ± 18.35), fat thickness (13.25 ± 1.75), marbling score (5.63 ± 0.56), meat color (40.06 ± 1.23), crude fat (18.39 ± 1.32) and sensory characteristics (flavor 5.03 ± 0.17; tenderness 4.42 ± 0.33; juiciness 5.10 ± 0.16). Nevertheless, the shear force values decreased significantly in FTMR‐treated animals compared with control group steers. Overall, FTMR may not only improve the growth performance, biochemical metabolites, and fatty and acetic acid profiles of steers, but may also enhance the carcass and meat quality characteristics of Hanwoo steers. Abstract: Background and Aims: Many patients with intestinal Behçet's disease (BD) still suffer from gastrointestinal symptoms despite the disease being in endoscopic or radiological remission. Previous studies report that small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) can be associated with inflammatory bowel disease. However, there have been no reports about SIBO in patients with intestinal BD. We sought to identify the frequency of SIBO in patients with inactive intestinal BD by hydrogen breath test (HBT) and to investigate the efficacy of rifaximin as a treatment for SIBO. Methods: Twenty‐five patients with intestinal BD who had gastrointestinal symptoms even in endoscopic or radiological remission status were enrolled between January 2012 and January 2016. The patients filled out a questionnaire regarding their subjective gastrointestinal symptoms and took an HBT. Patients with positive HBT results were recommended to take 800‐mg rifaximin daily for 14 days. Results: Nine patients (9/25, 36%) had a positive HBT test. Eight (8/9, 88.9%) were women, and their mean age was 48.7 years. The most common symptom was abdominal distension (8/9, 88.9%), followed by abdominal discomfort (6/9, 66.7%). Rifaximin was prescribed to the nine patients with positive HBT, but two patients refused to take the medication. Four weeks later, six of the seven patients taking rifaximin (85.7%) reported symptom improvement, and none of them reported adverse events. Conclusions: More than one‐third of the patients with inactive intestinal BD who had gastrointestinal symptoms were accompanied by SIBO using HBT. Nanofabrication is an indispensable process in nanoscience and nanotechnology. Unconventional lithographic techniques are often used for fabrication as alternatives to photolithography because they are faster, more cost-effective, and simpler to use. However, these techniques are limited in scalability and utility because of the collapse of preprinted structures during step-and-repeat processes. This study proposes a new class of temperature-controllable polymeric molds that are coated with a metal such that any site-specific patterning can be accomplished in a programmable manner using selective contact-dewetting lithography. The lithography allows sub-100 nm patterning, step-and-repeat processing, and hierarchical structure fabrication. The programmable feature of the lithography can be utilized for the structural coloring and shaping of objects. Large-area programmable patterning, semiconductor device manufacturing, and the fabrication of iridescent security devices would benefit from the unique features of the proposed strategy. Background and Aim The diagnostic and prognostic values of fecal calprotectin (FC) levels in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases have been proven. However, little is known about the usefulness of FC measurement in predicting intestinal involvement of Behçet's disease (BD). Methods Forty-four consecutive patients with systemic BD who underwent colonoscopy for the evaluation of gastrointestinal symptoms were prospectively enrolled between November 2012 and March 2014 in a single tertiary medical center. Fecal specimens from the patients were obtained the day before bowel cleansing and 3 months after colonoscopy. Results Twenty-five patients showed intestinal ulcerations on colonoscopy (12 [48.0%] typical and 13 [52.0%] atypical ulcerations). The median FC level in the intestinal BD group was significantly higher than that in the non-diagnostic group (112.53 [6.86-1604.39] vs 31.64 [5.46-347.60] µg/g, respectively, P = 0.003). Moreover, the typical ulceration group showed a significantly higher median FC level than the atypical ulceration group in patients with intestinal BD (435.995 [75.65-1604.39] vs 71.42 [6.86-476.94] µg/g, respectively, P = 0.033). Multivariate analysis revealed higher FC as an independent predictor of intestinal BD (OR = 38.776; 95% CI = 2.306-652.021; P = 0.011). The cut-off level of FC for predicting intestinal BD was 68.89 µg/g (76% sensitivity and 79% specificity). The absolute changes between fecal calprotectin levels and the disease activity index of intestinal BD from initial diagnosis of intestinal BD to 3 months after diagnosis were significantly correlated (Pearson's correlation coefficient = 0.470, P = 0.027). The use of solution-processable electrically conducting films is imperative for realizing next-generation flexible and wearable devices in a large-scale and economically viable way. However, the conventional approach of simply complexing metallic nanoparticles with a polymeric medium leads to a tradeoff between electrical conductivity and material properties. To address this issue, in this study, a novel strategy is presented for fabricating all-solution-processable conducting films by means of metal/polyelectrolyte complexation to achieve controlled electrical percolation; this simultaneously imparts superior electrical conductivity and good mechanical properties. A polymeric matrix comprised of polyelectrolyte multilayers is first formed using layer-by-layer assembly, and then Ag nanoparticles are gradually synthesized and gradationally distributed inside the polymeric matrix by means of a subsequent procedure of repeated cationic exchange and reduction. During this process, electrical percolation between Ag nanoparticles and networking of electrical pathways is facilitated in the surface region of the complexed film, providing outstanding electrical conductivity only one order of magnitude less than that of metallic Ag. At the same time, the polymer-rich underlying region imparts strong, yet compliant, binding characteristics to the upper Ag-containing conducting region while allowing highly flexible mechanical deformations of bending and folding, which consequently makes the system outperform existing materials. Background and Aim Post-polypectomy bleeding ( PPB) is the most common adverse event of colonoscopic polypectomy, especially in cases with large pedunculated polyps. To minimize the risk of PPB, several endoscopic preventive methods have been performed. The aim of this prospective, randomized study was to compare the rates of PPB following single (clipping alone) and combined (clipping plus epinephrine-saline injection) methods in prevention of PPB in large pedunculated polyps. Methods Adult patients with pedunculated colorectal polyps with heads ≥ 10 mm were prospectively enrolled from March 2011 to January 2013. Patients were randomized to receive treatment of either clips alone (group A) or clips plus injection of epinephrine-saline (group B) prior to a conventional polypectomy. PPB rate in both groups were compared. Results A total of 148 patients with 173 pedunculated colorectal polyps were enrolled. Groups A and B each had 74 patients, with 83 and 90 polyps, respectively. The mean head diameters were 17.2 ± 6.6 and 17.5 ± 6.7 mm in groups A and B, respectively ( P = 0.748). Immediate PPB ( IPPB) occurred in 10 cases (12.0%) from group A and 13 cases (14.4%) from group B ( P = 0.64). There were no cases of delayed PPB or perforation. Multivariate analysis showed that inadequate bowel preparation and large head diameter of polyp were independent risk factors for IPPB. Conclusions The rate of IPPB is relatively high in cases with large pedunculated polyps, but these polyps can be successfully resected by snare polypectomy following use of the single prophylactic clipping method. Background: Low-level laser irradiation promotes cell viability and wound healing in periodontal tissue. However, its effect on periodontal pathogenic bacteria is unknown. The purpose of this study is to investigate the biologic effect of low-level laser irradiation on Porphyromonas gingivalis. Methods: A murine macrophage cell line (RAW 264.7) was cultured and treated with gallium-aluminum-arsenate (GaAlAs) laser-irradiated P. gingivalis with varying levels of energy fluency. Gene expression of monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1), interleukin-6 (IL-6), interferon-β (IFN-β), and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) was examined by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. Production of iNOS was determined by Western blot analysis, and nitric oxide (NO) release was assessed using Griess reagent. Flow cytometric analysis was performed to determine the activation of Toll-like receptors (TLRs) in response to P . gingivalis. Results: The laser-irradiated P. gingivalis significantly enhanced messenger RNA and protein levels of iNOS in RAW 264.7. Although the laser irradiation on P . gingivalis did not alter the expression level of MCP-1, IL-6, and IFN-β, it showed a noticeable effect on NO production in RAW 264.7. Furthermore, the laser-irradiated P. gingivalis accelerated TLR2 activation, but not TLR4 activation. Conclusions: This study reveals that GaAlAs laser irradiation on P. gingivalis induced iNOS expression at the transcriptional and translation levels and increased NO release in macrophages. Moreover, it is confirmed that this process was mediated specifically by TLR2 activation. Cancer stem cells (CSCs) play a pivotal role in cancer relapse or metastasis. We investigated the CSC-suppressing effect of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and the relevant mechanisms in colorectal cancer. We measured the effect of NSAIDs on CSC populations in Caco-2 or SW620 cells using colosphere formation and flow cytometric analysis of PROM1 (CD133)+CD44+ cells after indomethacin treatment with/without prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) or peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARG) antagonist, and examined the effect of indomethacin on transcriptional activity and protein expression of NOTCH/HES1 and PPARG. These effects of indomethacin were also evaluated in a xenograft mouse model. NSAIDs (indomethacin, sulindac and aspirin), celecoxib, γ-secretase inhibitor and PPARG agonist significantly decreased the number of colospheres formation compared to controls. In Caco-2 and SW620 cells, compared to controls, PROM1 (CD133)+CD44+ cells were significantly decreased by indomethacin treatment, and increased by 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) treatment. This 5-FU-induced increase of PROM1 (CD133)+CD44+ cells was significantly attenuated by combination with indomethacin. This CSC-inhibitory effect of indomethacin was reversed by addition of PGE2 and PPARG antagonist. Indomethacin significantly decreased CBFRE and increased PPRE transcriptional activity and their relative protein expressions. In xenograft mouse experiments using 5-FU-resistant SW620 cells, the 5-FU treatment combined with indomethacin significantly reduced tumor growth, compared to 5-FU alone. In addition, treatment of indomethacin alone or combination of 5-FU and indomethacin decreased the expressions of PROM1 (CD133), CD44, PTGS2 (cyclooxygenase 2) and HES1, and increased PPARG expression. Background and Aim Recent genomic studies have identified genetic variants in the I L12B gene, which encodes the p40 subunit shared by interleukin 12 and interleukin 23, as susceptibility loci for inflammatory bowel disease ( IBD). The study aimed to identify additional novel genetic variants in IL12B and investigated whether variants confer susceptibility to the development of Crohn's disease ( CD) or ulcerative colitis ( UC) in the Korean population. Methods To detect single nucleotide polymorphisms ( SNPs) in IL12B, direct sequencing of all coding exons, exon-intron boundaries, promoter region, and 5′ untranslated region was performed in 24 randomly selected samples. Selected haplotype-tagging SNPs were subsequently genotyped in 493 IBD patients (245 patients with CD and 248 with UC) and 504 healthy controls. Results Two haplotype-tagging SNPs (rs2288831 and rs919766) were selected through direct sequencing and were genotyped. Of them, SNP rs2288831 in the IL12B gene was significantly associated with CD susceptibility in allelic association analysis (odds ratio = 1.30; 95% confidence interval 1.04-1.62; P = 0.019). This significant association with CD was also observed for a haplotype consisting of SNP rs919766 and rs2288831 (odds ratio = 1.29; 95% confidence interval 1.03-1.60; P = 0.025). However, none of IL12B SNPs were associated with UC susceptibility. Finally, no specific associations between genetic variants and disease phenotype of CD were identified. Conclusions This study is first to identify SNP rs2288831 in the IL12B gene as a susceptible variation for CD. Materials and fabrication procedures are described for bioresorbable transistors and simple integrated circuits, in which the key processing steps occur on silicon wafer substrates, in schemes compatible with methods used in conventional microelectronics. The approach relies on an unusual type of silicon on insulator wafer to yield devices that exploit ultrathin sheets of monocrystalline silicon for the semiconductor, thin films of magnesium for the electrodes and interconnects, silicon dioxide and magnesium oxide for the dielectrics, and silk for the substrates. A range of component examples with detailed measurements of their electrical characteristics and dissolution properties illustrate the capabilities. In vivo toxicity tests demonstrate biocompatibility in sub-dermal implants. The results have significance for broad classes of water-soluble, 'transient' electronic devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: This study evaluates the potential of bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2) gene-transduced bone marrow stem cells (BMSCs) to facilitate osseous healing after rabbit maxillary sinus augmentation in conjunction with implant placement. Methods: Autologous BMSCs derived from New Zealand white rabbits were cultured and transduced with BMP-2 using an adenovirus vector. Transduced BMSCs (BMP-2/ BMSCs) were then combined with a deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) scaffold. Twenty-seven animals were randomly allocated into three groups: 1) control, sinus grafted with DBBM alone; 2) BMSC, sinus grafted with non- transduced BMSCs and DBBM; and 3) BMP-2/BMSC, sinus grafted with BMP-2/BMSCs and DBBM. During these procedures, a mini-implant was placed in the floor of the sinus. Animals were sacrificed at 2, 4, and 8 weeks after surgery. New bone area and bone-to-implant contact (BIC) were evaluated histomorphometrically. Results: At 2 and 4 weeks, the BMP-2/BMSC group showed more new bone area and higher BIC than the other two groups. BMP-2/BMSCs were detected with confocal microscopy for up to 4 weeks, which indicates that transduced cells contributed to new bone formation. However, at 8 weeks, there was no difference in new bone area or BIC among the three groups. Conclusions: These results suggest that BMP-2 delivery using BMSCs may result in earlier and increased bone formation in the maxillary sinus. This finding may offer more stable bone support to implants and reduce healing times. However, this study also revealed limitations in the stimulatory effect of BMP-2/BMSCs, such as diminished activity over time in later healing stages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
