Cell culture system is used for a wide range of research and biotechnology production. Majority of in vitro cell studies are conducted as static, two dimensional (2D) dish culture system where cells grow in a monolayer. However, to better reflect the in vivo condition, three dimensional (3D) culture systems were introduced that allow investigating the cell–cell and cell–microenvironment interactions. In this work, the 3D breast cancer model was investigated. Previously, we developed a 3D breast cancer model that constituted of fibroblasts and breast cancer cells seeded on the silkworm silk scaffold. The dynamic culture condition that provides the medium flow and shear forces was implemented to the model. The dynamic conditions were compared to the static cultivation regarding its influence on the number of cells, their viability, scaffold penetration, and cells co‐localization. The implication of the dynamic condition to the 3D cultures resulted in a higher number and viability of the cells compared with the static 3D cultures. In contrast to the static culture condition, during the dynamic cultivation cells penetrated entirely and evenly the inner parts of the scaffold. Moreover, in coculture, the transitions like a ratio of fibroblast to the cancer cells, fibroblast morphology, and their localization were similar in both types of culture conditions, but they proceeded much faster during the dynamic cultivation. The implementation of dynamic culture condition shortened the time needed to establish the settle 3D breast cancer model. Around 15% of the global population has a moderate or severe disability. For this reason, a design where the needs of elderly and disabled population are included, should become more common practise and should not be limited only to medical and rehabilitation products. In this study, the inclusive design practices related to the kitchens were applied. All the important stages in a design process, such as market research, planning, concept designing, detailed designing, research (ergonomic assessment), and production preparation were completed. In market research we market research examined the preferences of 216 respondents. Sixty percent of them were either elderly and/or disabled persons (direct users), 40% were caretakers, physiotherapists, and managers of care centres (indirect users). Implementation of obtained results is three kitchen lines with assistive technology solutions, which are the response to the requirements identified as appropriate in meeting the needs of the elderly and disabled kitchen users. The main conclusion of the article is the statement that the needs of seniors can and should be efficiently included in a design process of home interiors. It can be recognised as an important "social" designing criterion which can constitute a good basis for going beyond the traditional design and going toward the sustainable design. BACKGROUND The phytochemicals of two apple cultivars (Yellow Transparent and Early Geneva) protected in two ways, conventionally with chemical pesticides or by effective microorganisms ( EM), were compared. Two types of components were determined: lipids synthesised constitutively and generated via inducible pathways polyphenols along with antioxidant activity and profiles. RESULTS The antioxidant activities assessed with ABTS, DPPH and Folin-Ciocalteu reagents were about two-fold higher in the case of microbiologically protected apples. The qualitative composition of phenolics determined by LC-DAD-MS varied between cultivars and the part of apples studied, while the method of protection caused mainly differences in concentration of some groups of polyphenols (hydroxycinnamates, flavanols, dihydrochalcones, flavonols, anthocyanins). The apples from biological cultivation contained about 34-54% more phenolics than these from a conventional orchard. In contrast, lipid composition did not differ significantly between apples originating from conventional and bio-crops. CONCLUSION The results indicate that the advantage of using the EM technology in agriculture may not only be the reduction of consumption of chemical fertilisers and synthetic pesticides, but also, at least in the case of apples, may lead to the production of crops with improved health quality due to the higher content of bioactive phytochemicals. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article analyzes and discusses the environmental and natural resource impacts, benefits, and greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation potential associated with a long-term transition to more energy-efficient pyrometallurgical smelting technologies for the production of refined copper. Using generic data from the KGHM Polska Miedź S.A, Glogow I and II smelting facilities in Poland, this study employs life cycle assessment (LCA) to compare the environmental impacts of shaft and flash furnace-based smelting technologies. Additionally, this analysis accounts for likely technological changes in the more energy-efficient flash furnace smelting technologies and electricity generation from 2030 to 2050 to forecast the long-term impacts of copper production. Life cycle impact assessment results for copper production are characterized using the ReCiPe 2008 midpoint method. LCA results show that, for most impact categories, the flash-based technology can achieve significantly lower environmental impacts than a shaft furnace (i.e., to produce 1 ton of copper in 2010 generates, on average, a 24% lower overall impact). For climate change, transitioning from shaft furnace-based copper production to more efficient flash furnace technology leads to decreasing GHG emissions of 29% in 2010, 50% in 2030, and 56% in 2050.
